This spring will be the last season which takes place in old venues to which we have all become accustomed: the Gubelmann Auditorium, dating back to the 1940s, the improvised exhibition galleries in the former dining areas of the Embassy Club, and the Children’s Library high behind the anonymous façade of the former Embassy apartments.

The Four Arts has been created in patchwork fashion over the past hundred years, with a lack of unity. A new Master Plan for the Campus, designed for us by the country’s foremost restoration architects, Beyer Blinder Belle, will unite the gardens, walkways, buildings, and grounds, to create a sense of place, purpose, and peacefulness. Final plans will be completed in the spring, and construction will begin.

The Rovensky and O’Keeffe buildings will be improved with many long-desired new features: • The auditorium will have up-to-date air conditioning, a steeper rake, a backstage, dressing rooms, and a box office/reception area.

• The exhibition galleries will have for the first time behind-the-scenes support areas, state-of-the-art technology, temperature and humidity control, a fire suppression system, and larger, better-sequenced galleries.

• The Children’s Library will move to the Rovensky ground floor. Thanks to a new building that extends to the north, it will be larger, with its own secure entrance as well as purpose-designed spaces for programs and activities. A highlight of the Reading Room will be Damien Hirst’s Five Disney Friends in Carrara marble, given by Andrea and Steven Wynn.

You will find here the grateful list, to date, of generous donors to the ‘Centennial Campaign’, led by Campaign Chair Bonnie McElveen-Hunter, which will make all these renovation projects possible. She has, almost single-handedly, brought out the best in us. There are a number of members from whom we have not yet heard. We look forward to hearing from them all.

In We Hold These Truths, Federal Judge Douglas Ginsburg explores the enduring influence of America’s Declaration of Independence. This promissory note for liberty inspired more than 100 nations seeking their independence. In the United States it influenced the abolitionist movement, the Women’s Suffrage movement, and iconic civil rights figures Frederick Douglass and Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. Judge Ginsburg talked with Lynn University American Studies professor Robert Watson about Supreme Court history and his career, including his time as a clerk for U.S. Supreme Court Justice Thurgood Marshall. Judge Ginsburg was appointed to the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit in 1986, where he served as Chief Judge from 2001 to 2008. In addition to serving on the D.C. Circuit, Judge Ginsburg is currently a Professor of Law at the Antonin Scalia Law School at George Mason University. His three-part documentary on the Constitution, “A More or Less Perfect Union,” debuted on public television stations in 2020.

An Extensive Look at Art Nouveau Chrysler Museum exhibition features furniture and decorative arts

By Erik H. Neil, Ph.D. Macon and Joan Brock Director Chrysler Museum of Art Among the many gifts that Walter P. Chrysler Jr. and Jean Outland Chrysler bestowed upon the Chrysler Museum of Art more than five decades ago, the Art Nouveau furniture, decorative arts, and graphic arts stand out as a remarkable collection within the collection. They reflect a particular passion of these avid collectors who lived with many of these objects in their homes before eventually gifting them to the Museum. As a group they are exceptional for their quality and breadth. Some major figures of this pivotal artistic movement that thrived from the 1880s through the First World War are well represented: Hector Guimard, Émile Gallé, Louis Majorelle, Alphonse Mucha, and others.

The Museum has long displayed elements of the Art Nouveau collection, but they have not, until now, been presented so extensively. Thus, it is especially satisfying to share over 120 beautiful and finely crafted works with museums across the United States. We are fulfilling one of the primary goals of our mission, to make great art accessible to the public. Through this exhibition and its accompanying publication, many more people will have the experience and, I hope, pleasure of learning more about the Art Nouveau movement and its achievements. A new generation of American museum goers will have the opportunity to enjoy the richness and complexity of Art Nouveau.

The central theme is the triumph of nature. As has long been recognized, the Art Nouveau movement thrived at just the moment when industrialization and urbanization were becoming dominant features of contemporary life across Europe and North America. Plants, flowers, and animals dominate the decor of the works in the exhibition. Paradoxically, the style existed in correspondence with new modes of living, sometimes in seeming reaction to increased mechanization but often linked to modern popular culture of music halls, subways, and mass-market advertising. This was a distinct break from the long traditions of classicism, a break that paved the way for even more radical movements to come.

The aesthetic was also influenced by the arrival of art and design objects from Japan — especially, but not only, the flood of woodblock prints. The craze for Japanese art was one of the repercussions of the opening of Japan to foreign trade after centuries of isolation. The influence can be recognized in the choice of colors, compositions, and themes as well as the avoidance of one- and two-point perspective that had dominated European art since the Renaissance. The revival of finely formed furniture with elaborate inlay and marquetry can also be linked to the influx of Japanese design objects.

The realization of this project is due to the efforts of many members of the Chrysler team, beginning with Irene Leach Curator of European Art, Lloyd DeWitt, who made the key curatorial decisions. We have been most fortunate to work with David Furchgott and the remarkable team at International Arts & Artists, who embraced this project from the start. I would also like to thank Dollar Tree and Family Dollar for their consistent support of the Chrysler Museum and their recognition that art is a vital component of any thriving community. Their generosity helps us make great art accessible to everyone.

Hear inspiring insights into The Triumph of Nature from its organizing curator, Dr. Lloyd DeWitt, who also contributed to the exhibition’s catalogue. He will discuss the curves, natural motifs, and refined elegance of Art Nouveau art, furniture, decorative objects, and graphic works, and examine the influence of economy, trade, and culture in France that led to this brief, but intense, artistic movement. Dr. DeWitt is a graduate of the University of Guelph (Ontario, Canada) and the University of Massachusetts Amherst, and earned his doctorate at the University of Maryland, College Park. He is currently the Richard and Janet Geary Curator at the Portland Art Museum, where he oversees the Museum’s works of European and American art before 1930.

The John and Diane Sculley Lecture Barry Diller’s memoir, Who Knew?, was released in 2025 to wide acclaim and was a New York Times best-seller.

Diller is celebrated as a Hollywood innovator, a commerce trailblazer and an internet visionary. He is currently the Chairman and Senior Executive of InterActiveCorp (IAC) and of Expedia Group. From 1984 to 1992, he served as Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Fox and was responsible for the creation of Fox Broadcasting Company. Before joining Fox, Diller served for 10 years as Chairman of Paramount Pictures Corporation.

The Thomas A. Saunders Memorial Lecture Justice Anthony M. Kennedy is a distinguished American jurist and legal thinker who served as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court of the United States from 1988 to 2018. Nominated by President Ronald Reagan and confirmed unanimously by the Senate, Justice Kennedy became a pivotal voice on the Court, often casting the deciding vote in closely contested cases that shaped the nation’s legal and social landscape. Over his three decades on the Supreme Court, Justice Kennedy developed a reputation for his independent jurisprudence.

The Sharon and John Loeb Lecture Kevin Rudd is Australia’s Ambassador to the United States, taking up his post in Washington DC in March 2023.

Ambassador Rudd served as Australia’s 26th Prime Minister, from 2007 to 2010, then as Minister for Foreign Affairs before a second term as Prime Minister in 2013. He was Member for Griffith in the Australian Parliament from 1998 to 2013. Since leaving government, Ambassador Rudd has resided in the United States where he is recognized as a leading analyst of China. In 2015, he became inaugural President of the Asia Society Policy Institute in New York.

In 2017 he co-founded Blue Zones LLC, which partners with city governments, hospital systems, and insurance companies to apply lessons from blue zones to help communities. To date, more than 70 cities have adopted Blue Zones Projects, improving the health of over 10 million Americans. She is host of “The Amanpour Hour,” a Saturday show of forensic interviews with the newsmakers, gamechangers and cultural icons shaping our world. She is based in the network’s London bureau. In 1996, Newsweek stated that her reporting from the Gulf and the Balkans, had helped make CNN “must-see TV for world leaders.” During the height of the Arab Spring she conducted an Emmy-winning interview, the last, with Libya’s former leader Moammar Gadhafi.

The 2025-2026 Four Arts season is enriched with programming dedicated to America as we celebrate the 250th anniversary of its founding. A centerpiece of this is a festival of American Chamber Music performed by the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center and curated by Chief Operations Officer Sofia Vollmer Maduro and Artistic Advisor Wu Han, co-director of the CMSLC. Three concerts will offer you everything from folk songs first published in the 19th century to masterpieces by composers of the 20th century to the incomparable excitement of American movie music.

In anticipation of the “America at 250” festival, The Four Arts sat down for five questions with Wu Han: What was your approach to curating this festival of three “America at 250” chamber music concerts?

Curating the festival in celebration of this 250th anniversary year was an incredible journey. Along with Sofia Vollmer Maduro, I am thrilled to bring three fabulous concerts to our beloved Four Arts audience. In only 250 years, American composers have contributed a breathtaking body of work that reflects this country’s inventiveness born out of our rich heritage. You will hear influences that range from the movie industry, to the American landscape, societal change, and more. It was a true pleasure to choose from so much interesting music in order to create a cohesive festival that truly reflects the glorious kaleidoscope of American musical history and development.

Give us an overview of each of the concerts and their programs.

The first festival program presents several of our American genres: Gottschalk’s virtuosic The Union is a terrific, joyful opener followed

by Bostonian Arthur William Foote’s Nocturne and Scherzo, which demonstrates the influence of the great European composers. We celebrate American cinema with Bernard Herrmann’s rarely performed Psycho: A Narrative for String Ensemble composed for the classic Hitchcock film. Stephen Foster’s The Social Orchestra reflects folk elements and features flutist Tara Helen O’Connor, who arranged the selections on this program. Finally, we will perform Copland’s iconic Appalachian Spring Suite, a piece commissioned by American patron Elizabeth Sprague Coolidge for the Martha Graham ballet company.

The second program begins with Samuel Barber’s Souvenirs which reflects the hustle and bustle of New York’s 1950’s society scene. This year we will perform two works by Amy Beach who in 1896 became the first American woman to achieve an orchestra premiere. Her quintet paints a picture of the 19th century woman as struggling performing artist and is hauntingly beautiful. The concert will close with Antonin Dvořák’s American Quintet. Composed while living in America, this piece is filled with spirited and soulful music inspired by African and Native American folk music traditions.

Program three is one of the most virtuosic programs I have ever designed. Beginning with a wildly clever arrangement of Stars and Stripes for two violins, the program travels through several composers each with distinct styles: From George Antheil, the self-proclaimed “Bad Boy of Music,” to the legendary Leonard Bernstein, Paul Schoenfield, Amy Beach, and West Coast contemporary composer John Adams. This program features two compositions by the beloved George Gershwin including Rhapsody in Blue arranged for piano four hands, a wonderful ending to a celebratory festival.

You are a celebrated pianist and will be performing in all of the concerts. What is your favorite or most challenging piece to play in “America at 250.”

Quite honestly, it is impossible to choose between such extraordinary works. This is like asking a parent to choose their favorite child – they are all treasured.

It is my job as Artistic Advisor to encourage the Four Arts audience to learn and to continue to discover more within the incredible tradition of chamber music.

I will perform in each of the three concerts along with some of the finest chamber musicians in the world.

This festival is not to be missed.

What do you hope attendees most enjoy or take away from the festival experience?

I hope that after they attend all three concerts, they will gain greater appreciation for American music, and will recognize the spirit of optimism and beauty that the music represents. These works illustrate our humanity, our creativity, and our innovative spirit. I became a United States citizen in 1983. I love this country and believe that the enduring American spirit is worth celebration.

You and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center have been coming to The Four Arts for several years. What are some of your favorite parts of visiting Palm Beach and performing at the Gubelmann Auditorium?

My favorite part of coming to Palm Beach each year is the audience who remains attentive, curious, and appreciative. Over the years, CMS and all of the musicians who have played on the Gubelmann Auditorium stage, have created a very special relationship with Palm Beach. We feel the energy from the audience and have noticed increased attendance. The enthusiastic response makes our work that much more fulfilling. We are all grateful for the Four Arts community.

A musical ballade takes a listener on a journey through varied landscapes and introduces casts of sharply defined characters. Marsalis is the Managing and Artistic Director of Jazz at Lincoln Center. Lilly is an Inspirational Fight for Equality

By Rachel Feldman Director of Lilly When I first heard Lilly Ledbetter speak, I knew that I had to tell her story. As a woman director who came to Hollywood at a time when only one percent of film and television was being directed by women, I know gender discrimination first-hand.

As one of the only women who worked on the factory floor of the Goodyear tire factory from 1979 to 1998, Lilly Ledbetter put up with sexual harassment and myriad forms of gender discrimination in order to bring home a better paycheck. Her gritty work ethic kept her emotions in check as she endured this dreadful work environment - until the day that she learned that she was being cheated of a fair salary – just because she was a woman. Lilly fought back, over and over again, through corporations, courts, and congress, to the Supreme Court and finally the White House. She couldn’t stop - she wouldn’t stop - until she found justice. In the end, Lilly did not receive any personal compensation. Her reward was a life of purpose, as a citizen who single-handedly changed the law to protect other workers.

The film follows her battle against workplace discrimination and the legal fight leading to the Lilly Ledbetter Fair Pay Act.

When I tell folks about Lilly’s story they assume it took place in the 1950s, but Lilly worked at Goodyear until 1998, and women are still struggling with fair pay, discrimination and exclusion in every sector. Over the years, as my directing career flourished, I became an outspoken activist for women in Hollywood, speaking out about gender discrimination during a time when it was dangerous to speak truth to power. Sadly, for many, this remains a time when speaking out seems perilous. That is one of the many reasons why Lilly’s story is so important right now.

Her willingness to challenge the status quo despite the risks speaking out carried personally and professionally should be an inspiration for people from every walk of life.

People learn when they feel; compassion is a powerful carrier of information as ideas course through the blood, snap into our synapses. My hope is that Lilly will inspire people all over the world, no matter where they live, no matter the form of their oppressor, to be brave and to fight back against injustice. I can think of no better time than now for the world to see Lilly and learn the beautiful story of Lilly Ledbetter. I believe Lilly’s story of radical resilience can resonate around the world.

Special to The Four Arts David Snowdon lives in a cross-section of art and craft. As the Honorary Chairman for Christie’s in Europe, the Middle East and Africa, he has oversight over the dynamism of the art market, whilst his many years as Vice President of The King’s Foundation offers a unique firsthand view of the importance of craft and traditional arts and skills.

Snowdon’s illustrated lecture March 26 in the Walter S. Gubelmann Auditorium will offer insight into a life dedicated to the arts – from working with collectors on their multi-million dollar consignments, to nurturing the next generation of craftspeople, and preserving time-honoured skills that are becoming endangered in a technologically-driven world.

He has achieved international renown for his company, Linley, which he established in 1985 providing luxury interior design, furniture and accessories of the highest quality. Snowdon has written numerous books and lectured around the world at prestigious venues including the V&A Museum, the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, and the Smithsonian Institution in Washington.

Snowdon spoke to christies.com in 2022. Below are excerpts from that conversation: What sparked your early interest in making?

My father and mother (Antony Armstrong-Jones and Princess Margaret) were both creatives, and so I was brought up in a very great spirit of creativity. I learnt about music and ballet from my mother, and architecture, design and photography from my father. At home, making something was what you did to make yourself worthwhile. My father’s workshop, which was downstairs in the basement, was where all the creativity and fun happened!

Can you tell us about the early pieces that made you want to pursue a career in cabinetmaking and furniture design?

that they’ve made, knowing that it’s my great pleasure. I made my first piece of furniture — a desk — from a single piece of plywood when I was 13. It benefits from no working parts, so it hasn’t fallen apart yet. I made various pieces after that at school, including a cigar box and a dining table which I gave to a member of my family.

Do you have any advice on collecting furniture?

Whether you’re commissioning a piece or buying an antique, do your research and ask yourself questions. What are the materials that you like? Do you like cold polished steel, for instance, or warm materials like wool? And then turn to the architecture and surface decoration of the space.

What will complement the windows, doors, frames, walls and carpets? Take your time to sit in the space and see how you use it. And only buy something because you love it.

So how can we engage the next generation?

It’s trying to work out how you make learning to create and make things interesting for individuals who are used to having visual immediacy. It’s giving young children the space to touch, make and encounter art and craft in schools and museums, as well as the opportunity to study art history. That’s why open days, school trips, short courses and initiatives are so important to the future of craft.

Is that why you set up the Snowdon School of Furniture?

There are very few places for young people to learn about the value of wood as a sustainable and beautiful material for buildings and furniture. It was about creating a space that furniture design graduates could go to for a short time to fine-tune their making skills and learn about woodland management and harvesting. They can explore what they want to do creatively in the future and feel confident that they’re not alone on their journey.

Which makers or designers have inspired you?

Philosophically, I’ve been inspired by Roman and Greek architecture, and by people ranging from William Kent and Thomas Chippendale to Charles Rennie Mackintosh and Charles & Ray Eames. Then there’s Frank Lloyd Wright.

There were just two or three years between him designing a building with a coach house and then with a garage. I love people whose thinking shifted with the times.

How important is craft in our increasingly digital world?

I see that as society gets more mechanised and more digital, there seems to be a greater and greater need for people to understand their history and express themselves with their hands. We saw it during lockdown. You may not get paid a huge amount being a craftsperson today, but you will have a sense of pride knowing that you have made beautiful things that will outlast you and your children.

What are your hopes for the future of the craft sector?

I hope that craft will sit in a prominent position in society, and that being a craftsperson will be upheld like being a doctor or a financier. Creativity in itself is something that not only gives pleasure for the maker and their families but also for society.

This lecture provides background on Eastman’s early years growing up in central and western New York and explains how he got started with photography as a hobby and how it eventually made him his fortune. Eastman was a self-made man and a titan of industry. Marketing to women, children and an emerging middle class, he established a set of values that still exists in today’s consumer culture. Connor is the Retired Curator of the George Eastman Legacy Collection in Rochester.

The world is facing a health crisis due to increasing rates of obesity and diabetes, and the consequences will accumulate over the coming decades. Simultaneously, climate change is accelerating and is already having devastating effects; these changes will undermine the ability to produce adequate healthy food for the world’s growing population. A rapid shift away from fossil fuels to green energy is essential, and adoption of diets that largely plant-based must play an important role; this will have major benefits for human and planetary health including a 25 to 30% decrease in premature death rate. In this lecture, Harvard physician and epidemiologist Dr. Walter Willett will showcase how the traditional diets of the Mediterranean region have been shown to promote excellent health and have been sustainable over thousands of years. The second half of the 18th century was characterized not only by drastic political at 250 changes in Western Europe and America but also in many artistic fields. The lack of symmetry and the ‘frivolous’ ornament of the past were to be replaced by a more severe outlook, columns and pediments galore and ornaments drawn from the classical antiquity. Dubbed as the “goût à la grecque” or “in the Greek taste”, this new “neoclassical” style would be heralded by iconic buildings such as the Petit Trianon at Versailles (built from 1762 to 1767) and become the norm by the 1770s. In this lecture, Dr. Emmanuel Ducamp, art historian and lawyer will show how the Enlightenment and its desire of political change which materialized in America in 1776 — a new era indeed for that part of the world — went hand in hand with changes in taste and the arts.

Clarissa Eden, Countess of Avon (1920-2021) was the niece of one Prime Minister — Sir Winston Churchill, and the wife of another — Anthony Eden. She famously said: ‘For the past few weeks I have really felt as if the Suez Canal was flowing through my drawing-room.’ At Oxford in the 1940s she fascinated dons and undergraduates alike. Distant and dismissive, she was beautiful and well-connected. With her impressive intellect and acerbic wit, she was an influential muse to many leading figures over several decades — Cecil Beaton, James Pope-Hennessy, Lucian Freud, Isaiah Berlin, and Lord Goodman. After an early Bohemian life, she became a politically active wife to Eden when he was Foreign Secretary and Prime Minister, particularly during the Suez Crisis in 1956. Biographer and broadcaster, Hugo Vickers will bring context to her life through his book, Clarissa Muse to Power and from personal stories of their 40-year friendship.

In doing so he will show how systems of power and control are present in his work and will be showcased in his new book Cosmopolemos.

At the heart of the most dramatic regime change in all of history, these three women overthrew five centuries of clothing rules. Much like how the American Revolution redefined political ideals across the Atlantic, the French Revolution sparked a radical transformation not only in governance but also in the very fabric of fashion and identity. Women strode the boulevards of Paris in mobile sheaths, borrowed style from around the world, cropped their hair short, and invented the handbag.
