Welcome to The Society of the Four Arts Each year The Society of the Four Arts offers a dynamic lineup of cultural programming, including notable speakers, films, high-definition opera, ballet, musical and exhibit screenings, live performances, educational programs, and art exhibitions.

The campus is home to beautiful sculpture and botanical gardens and a state-of-the-art educational facility.

The Four Arts maintains two libraries: the Gioconda and Joseph King Library and the Children’s Library, featuring popular free story time programs.

Founded in 1936 on the eastern shore of the Intracoastal Waterway, The Four Arts is one of Palm Beach’s oldest and most respected cultural destinations.

The Fine Arts Department oversees the exhibition program and permanent art collection at The Society of the Four Arts. Each season from November through May, Fine Arts presents two to four traveling or curated exhibitions in the galleries of the Esther B. O’Keeffe Building. The exhibitions feature a dynamic range of art movements, styles, media, subjects, time periods, and cultures. Exhibitions are often accompanied by free gallery guides or catalogues available for purchase.

In addition, the Fine Arts Department maintains the exhibitions in the Mary Alice Fortin Children’s Art Gallery in the Children’s Library.

The Department also encourages an appreciation for the visual arts by decorating public spaces of The Four Arts’ historic landmark buildings with art from the permanent collection. The collection contains an array of fine and decorative arts and furniture, including the sculptures permanently displayed in the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden and Four Arts Botanical Gardens.

A Beautiful Mess: Weavers and Knotters of the Vanguard is a vibrant contemporary textile exhibition organized by the Bedford Gallery at the Lesher Center for the Arts in Walnut Creek, CA. It features a diverse selection of fiber arts including wall-hangings, installations, and monumental pieces.

Made by an all-female roster of conceptual artists, the exhibition showcases twisted, tied, and braided works made from tactile and utilitarian materials like rope, yarn, clay, and wire.

Collectively, they push the boundaries of fiber art and elevate the status of weaving and knotting from craft to fine art. The artists infuse their works with personal stories and socio-political concerns to further revolutionize the previously marginalized genre of fiber arts.

Join Emilee Enders, Curator of Exhibitions and Programs, Bedford Gallery, Lesher Center for the Arts, Walnut Creek, California, to learn about the development of A Beautiful Mess and the processes and materials the artists used to create their stunning works. Enders will also share histories about the artists and the societal norms and traditions of the fiber arts.

The Society for the Four Arts is the debut traveling venue for A Beautiful Mess, which will tour across the United States through mid-2024. The artists featured are Windy Chien, Kirsten Hassenfield, Dana Hemenway, Kira Dominguez Hultgren, dani lopez, Hannah Perrine Mode, Liz Robb, Meghan Shimek, Lisa Solomon, Katrina Sánchez Standfield, and Jacqueline Surdell.

members who employ the same textile processes as the artists in A Beautiful Mess. While some FAMA artists drew upon their traditional practices, others created new pieces in direct response to A Beautiful Mess. FAMA is also contributing educational displays with images, text, video, and hands-on textile creations that explain the weaving and knotting techniques in the exhibitions.

The Four Arts is collaborating with Fiber ArtistsMiami Association (FAMA) to highlight the talent of South Florida fiber artists in the companion exhibition Talking Threads: Dialogues with Weavers and Knotters of South Florida. It features works made by FAMA

AN EYE ON MICHELANGELO AND BERNINI FINE ARTS

PHOTOGRAPHS BY AURELIO AMENDOLA Saturday, November 13, 2021 through Sunday, January 30, 2022 East Gallery

This special exhibition developed by the Fine Arts Department features 30 stunning black and white photographs by Aurelio Amendola, a prolific contemporary photographer from Italy.

While Amendola has devoted his career to capturing the likeness of major protagonists in 20th-century art such as De Chirico, Lichtenstein, Pomodoro, and Warhol, he is also well known for his photographs documenting the works of great masters of the Italian Renaissance like Jacopo della Quercia, Donatello, and Michelangelo.

This exhibition features photographic details of some of Michelangelo’s most beloved pieces — David, Pietà, Moses, Victory, and figures from the Tombs of Giuliano di Lorenzo de’ Medici and Lorenzo di Piero de’ Medici — alongside details of Bernini’s Damned Soul, David, Apollo and Daphne, Rape of Persephone, and Aeneas, Anchises, and Ascanius.

While some of Amendola’s compositions reveal Michelangelo’s and Bernini’s mastery of carving in marble, others are severely cropped into dramatic abstractions. These abstracted visions underscore his lifelong exploration with juxtapositions of light and shadow.

A consummate experimenter, Amendola’s photography practice blends tradition and modernity with great intensity, grace, and melody. Printed in large format on aluminum, the photographs in An Eye on Michelangelo and Bernini show the intimate dialogue Amendola shares with the artists and unveil the style and intensity of the Italian masters from the personal point of view of the photographer.

A titan of the Italian High Renaissance, the extreme virtuosity of Michelangelo’s technique in sculpture, his style in painting and architecture, his elegance and his expressive force, made him also a source for the Italian Mannerism that came after. Michelangelo (1475-1564) is arguably the greatest sculptor that has ever lived, and certainly the most famous.

The greatest of all the Italian Baroque sculptors, Gian Lorenzo Bernini (1598-1680) carved with astonishing skill and inventiveness and surpassed Michelangelo in his liberation of sculptural form from the restraints of the marble block, in his skill in portraiture, and in the invention of theatrical conceits that combine sculpture with real light, space, and architecture.

An Eye on Michelangelo and Bernini was organized by The Society of the Four Arts, thanks in part to an anonymous grant, and is generously supported by Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Gill.

Brown, Ph.D., discuss the dissemination of Impressionism from its French roots into the American idiom and how Impressionism led to a reinterpretation of American landscape painting. She will also explore regional art colonies that played a role in the development of American Impressionism.

Brown will conclude her talk by sharing insights about the Bank of America Art in our Communities Program, which was established in 2009 to share the company’s art collection.

This comprehensive exhibition traces the emergence and evolution of a truly American style in 130 works by more than 75 artists. It provides a thought-provoking historical context for American Impressionism by positioning it between the Hudson River School and the modernist trends evident in later pieces on view.

In a New Light reflects the changing mindset of America from the mid-19th to early 20th centuries. The exhibition concentrates on regional art colonies that were crucial to the American Impressionist movement, from the Northeast to the Midwest and the American West. A tranquil place for artists to share ideas and resources, these collaborative enclaves were often established in rural areas of great natural beauty, yet not far from growing urban centers. In a New Light explores the ways in which local artists interpreted America’s rural, maritime, and urban spaces and portray daily life using the Impressionistic devices of capturing moments with brisk brushstrokes, a vibrant palette, and atmospheric effects.

The Society of the Four Arts acquired this 2.2-acre expanse of land in the mid-1960s to prevent a Jacksonville firm from developing a Winn Dixie supermarket. The land remained unkempt and neglected until 1979 when Four Arts member Mrs. John Clifford Folger asked Philip Hulitar, a fashion designer, and former Four Arts’ Chairman of the Board, to transform the undeveloped space into a sculpture garden. Not only did he design the space, but he also helped acquire sculptures for it. The

garden opened in November 1980 and was officially named the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden in 1988 in honor of his continued support of the space and for his many years of service to The Four Arts.

In 1987, The Four Arts celebrated the installation of a new garden gate that linked the Sculpture Garden to the Botanical Gardens.

Two decades later, hurricanes Jeanne (2004), Frances (2004), and Wilma (2005) roared through and caused destruction to both

gardens. The Four Arts hired the landscape architecture firm Morgan Wheelock, Inc. to reimagine the Sculpture Garden and the Botanical Gardens, which reopened in March of 2007. The Sculpture Garden was enhanced with new seating, water fountains, additional sculptures, four pergolas, terraced planters, and a garden pavilion.

Despite its urban setting and its proximity to two busy streets, the Sculpture Garden has become a place of refuge and contemplation.

Open daily 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. ■ No charge ■ Closed during inclement weather Maintained by The Garden Club of Palm Beach Originally planted in 1938 by members of The Garden Club of Palm Beach, many of whom were members of The Four Arts, the Botanical Gardens were designed as demonstration gardens to educate residents about plants that thrive in the South Florida climate.

Garden Club members divided the space into thematic sections that favored architectural styles popular in the Town of Palm Beach and selected plants, sculptures, and architectural features for each unique setting.

CAPEHART

The Garden Club of Palm Beach hosted an “In Bloom” Flower Show in 2021.

During World War II, the Botanical Gardens fell into disrepair and their form and meaning drifted away. In 1953, The Four Arts turned care of the gardens over to the Garden Club, which still maintains the space. Profits from the Garden Club’s annual House & Garden Day and biennial Flower Show support the maintenance of the gardens. For more information, please visit gardenclubpalmbeach.com.

In 1956, the Garden Club hired the landscape architecture firm Innocenti & Webel to restore the gardens and Morgan Wheelock, Inc. redesigned them after the hurricanes of the mid2000s. The Four Arts Botanical Gardens continue to enchant and teach residents and visitors today.

45-minute docent-led tours of the exhibitions are offered during season. Tours are free with gallery admission and take place select Wednesdays at 10:30 a.m. and Saturdays at 11 a.m. (see The Four Arts’ website for more information).

Although tours are geared towards adults, children are welcome to participate. Please arrive 15 minutes early and meet the docent at the gallery entrance.

Walking Tour The new revised edition of the Walking Tour provides an opportunity to experience all of the grandeur of The Four Arts. This tour guides visitors around the beautiful 10-acre campus, including the gardens and historic landmark buildings, and provides information about the people and events that have shaped the organization’s history.

M U S I C The Music & Film department at The Society of the Four Arts enriches the Palm Beach community by serving as a cultural center and performance venue and by providing a space to curate, develop, and export cultural programs, including last season’s debut of the original live performance, “Americas with Bill Murray.”

Each season, the Music & Film department proudly presents the following: • Live performances: Acclaimed musicians from across the globe perform weekly, with programs ranging from classical, jazz, and bluegrass to ballroom dancing and special holiday concerts.

• High-definition screenings: Enjoy presentations from the Metropolitan Opera in New York, the Bolshoi Ballet in Moscow, and National Theatre Live in London, along with seasonal specials.

• Exhibition screenings: The critically-acclaimed Exhibition on Screen series delves into the lives of renowned artists and their work.

• Friday Film Series: This long-standing series presents entertaining selections, including second-run hidden gems, documentaries, and films which complement the season’s programming.

WU HAN INTRODUCES THE 2021-22 SEASON Dear friends, It is with great honor and excitement, in this my first year as artistic advisor to The Society for the Four Arts, to share an extraordinary season designed especially for you.

We open our season with collaborations with two major institutions: Jazz at Lincoln Center with Wynton Marsalis, and the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s signature performance of Bach’s six Brandenburg concertos, the very best of both worlds.

Sprinkled throughout the season are four string quartet programs performed by a diverse selection of today’s leading ensembles: the Escher, Pacifica, Danish and Brooklyn Rider Quartets, each group offering their own imaginative program, including not only master works from the quartet repertoire but also featuring significant guest artists, including clarinetist Anthony McGill, Met Opera star Susanna Phillips, and mandolinist Avi Avital. A rare performance of all of Paganini’s Caprices for solo violin, with the unusual piano accompaniments by Schumann, features violinist Sean Lee. And for piano lovers, we’ll have a complete Chopin recital by the young superstar Jan Lisiecki. Gabriela Montero and Joshua Rifkin will each bring you diverse programs featuring improvisations and lectures. Those who love baroque music can hear Les Violons Du Roy with guest pianist Jeremy Denk performing Bach’s keyboard concertos, and Copenhagen’s Trio con Brio joins this season’s visitors from Denmark.

During two special mini-festivals, I will be joined by musicians from the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center to explore and celebrate two extraordinary areas of the chamber music literature: the music of great Czech composer Antonin Dvořák, and the rich and diverse repertoires of Vienna, Paris, and America, concluding with Gershwin’s iconic American in Paris for piano, four hands. In addition, for Palm Beach’s younger community, we will bring one

Jan Lisiecki, piano

Enjoy a beautiful program featuring Chopin’s Etudes and Noctunes from “a musician of unusual refinement and imagination (Boston Globe).” Jan Lisiecki’s interpretations and technique speak to a maturity beyond his age. Now 26, the Canadian performs over a hundred yearly concerts worldwide. At 18, Lisiecki became both the youngest ever recipient of Gramophone’s Young Artist Award and received the Leonard Bernstein Award. In August 2021, Deutsche Grammophon released Frédéric Chopin’s complete Nocturnes, Lisiecki’s eighth album for the prestigious label.

Escher String Quartet with Susanna Phillips, soprano Sunday, January 16, 2022 at 3 p.m. $30 ■ No charge for Four Arts members The acclaimed Escher String Quartet, 2020-2021 Season Artists of The Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, team up for the first time with star soprano Susanna Phillips, who has sung at the Metropolitan Opera every season since her debut there in 2008. Together, they showcase a beautiful and eclectic program of chamber music: the Quartet performs works by Haydn and Dvořák while Ms. Phillips joins for vocal selections by Respighi, Dvořák, and Arthur Shepherd.

Sean Lee, violin and Peter Dugan, piano Wednesday, January 19, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. $40 ■ No charge for Four Arts members The 24 Caprices of Niccolò Paganini are thought of as the Mount Everest of the violin repertoire, rarely performed even by the most talented of violinists. But beyond the technical challenges, each Caprice is a compelling character piece — and even more colorful with the addition of Robert Schumann’s piano arrangements, which keep the original violin score unchanged. Sean Lee, who studied with violinist Ruggiero Ricci (who made the first solo violin recording in 1947), performs with longtime collaborator Peter Dugan in this special event.

Our Four Arts 2022 festival, “Around Dvořák”, centers on the music of one of history’s most beloved composers.

It’s exciting to discover that the famed creator of the New World Symphony was also the composer of a great number of definitive, masterful chamber works that constitute a significant portion of our standard repertoire today. In looking and listening “around” this impressive Czech composer, we’ll encounter those who influenced, inspired, and impacted Dvořák’s creativity, surrounded by an assemblage of his most heartfelt Romantic works, both classics and novelties. Around Dvořák I Sunday, February 6, 2022 at 3 p.m. $30 ■ No charge for Four Arts members The opening program of this year’s festival frames Dvořák with two composers who would prove to be significant inspirations in his life. The first is the father of Czech music, Bedřich Smetana, whose heartwrenching Trio served as an outlet for his grief. The second, Henry Burleigh, was a student at New York’s National Conservatory who taught Dvořák the African-American spirituals which informed some of his most famous works. Dvořák’s melodious String Quintet Op. 97, inspired by his time in Spillville, Iowa, rounds out an essential Bohemia-meets-the-New-World experience.

Around Dvořák II, with Jennifer Johnson Cano, mezzo-soprano Wednesday, February 9, 2022 at 7:30 p.m. $40 ■ No charge for Four Arts members This musical banquet pairs our featured composer, Antonín Dvořák, with his early and most important champion, Johannes Brahms. It was Brahms who introduced Dvořák to the publisher Simrock, who would become a key to his success. Beginning with Slavonic and Hungarian Dances of folklike vigor for four-hand piano, the program features sets of songs by both composers as well as two instrumental masterpieces by Dvořák: his unique and charming Terzetto for two violins and viola, composed for his friends, and his exuberant second Piano Quartet, written at the behest of Simrock, which features irresistible melodies for the cello.

Around Dvořák III Sunday, February 13, 2022 at 3 p.m. $30 ■ No charge for Four Arts members Even seasoned chamber music listeners often have never heard of Josef Suk, but the young Czech violinist who captured both Dvořák’s admiration and the hand of his daughter in marriage is worth meeting. His famed Op. 1 Piano Quartet, which so impressed Dvořák, opens this program of unbridled passion, followed by Brahms’s dark and foreboding work for the same ensemble, graced with one of history’s most beautiful cello solos.

Dvořák’s mighty Piano Quintet (considered one of the “big three” along with those by Schumann and Brahms) provides a powerful ending to an essential Dvořák experience.

The Trio con Brio Copenhagen was formed at the University of Music and Performing Arts in Vienna in 1999. The group features two musical pairings – the Korean-born sisters, Soo-Kyung Hong (cello) and Soo-Jin Hong (violin), and SooKyung and her husband, Danish pianist Jens Elvekjaer. The Trio con Brio Copenhagen has won over audiences worldwide with its fresh and contemporary approach.

Whether in search of fame, inspiration, connections, or the simple intellectual camaraderie of its cafés, creative thinkers have been drawn to the Austrian capital of Vienna for centuries. No profession competes historically with the art of music when it comes to Vienna, an environment in which Mozart, Beethoven, and Brahms bloomed and produced arguably the greatest music ever composed. This program pairs two iconic works of the late 18th century, composed by Mozart at the height of his powers and by Beethoven setting out to take Vienna by storm. To conclude, Brahms’ mighty second piano quartet synthesizes the best of both the Classical and Romantic ages, connecting Mozart and Beethoven by design (and with Schumann in spirit).

American composers have a long history of studying in Paris. Aaron Copland and George Walker, the first African-American composer to earn a Pulitzer Prize for music, both visited the City of Lights to study with famed pedagogue Nadia Boulanger. Featured in this program is Nadia’s younger sister Lili, a supremely gifted composer who became the first female to win the Prix de Rome. Gershwin, who traveled to meet Nadia Boulanger, wrote his iconic An American in Paris there. The remaining works on the program by Ravel and Milhaud date from the heady 1920s, when jazz idioms made their way into the works of many of France’s most distinguished composers. Since its debut in 2002 at the Copenhagen Festival, the Danish String Quartet has become one of the most sought-after quartets in the world. The ensemble is celebrated for its musical spontaneity, giving audiences the sense of hearing even treasured canon repertoire as if for the first time, and exuding a palpable joy in music-making that makes them enormously in-demand on concert stages around the world. They will perform a program featuring Schubert’s String Quartet in D minor, D. 810 “Death and the Maiden” and their signature arrangements of folk music from their Scandinavian homelands.

For nearly three years, he photographed an eclectic band of “catadores” or self-designated pickers of recyclable materials. Muniz’s initial objective was to “paint” the catadores with garbage. However, his collaboration with these inspiring characters, as they recreate photographic images of themselves out of garbage, reveals both the dignity and despair of the catadores as they begin to re-imagine their lives.

C A M P U S O N The Campus on the Lake department at The Society of the Four Arts offers a variety of cultural education programs that explore art, drama, literature, music, and the art of living well. Program offerings include master classes, lectures, classes and workshops, field trips, the Beyer Artist-in-Residence series, and collaborations with The Garden Club of Palm Beach.

All programs are open to the public, and the majority take place in the Fitz Eugene Dixon Education Building. The landmarked building was originally built in the 1920s as Palm Beach’s public school building. The Four Arts acquired the property and renovated it, preserving the facility’s landmarked exterior while modernizing the interior for 21st-century learning. The pedestrian entrance to the Dixon Education Building is on the south side of the building facing Lauder Way.

Not one of the topics is what it was a decade ago and each one’s future evolution will have enormous strategic implications for the United States and the international system.

Jeffrey S. Morton is Professor of World Politics at Florida Atlantic University and a Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association. Dr. Morton received his Master’s degree from Rutgers University in 1991 and his Ph.D. at the University of South Carolina in 1995. The author of three books, numerous journal articles and book chapters, Professor Morton has published on issues ranging from the legality of interventions and weapons of war to the United Nations, Israeli security and U.S. foreign policy. Dr. Morton has lectured nationally on matters relating to U.S. foreign policy, is the recipient of the FAU Researcher of the Year Award, Talon Service Award, and was the 2019 FAU Distinguished Teacher of the Year.

This series offers an exploration of wondrous moments in American cultural and artistic history from the 1890s to the 1920s. The literary works of Henry James, Edith Wharton, and F. Scott and Zelda Fitzgerald, were set against a musical backdrop of John Philip Sousa, Scott Joplin, Bix Beiderbecke, Louis Armstrong, and Ma Rainey. The stage saw famous performances by Richard Golden, musical performances by Lillian Russell, the operettas of Gilbert and Sullivan, magic by Howard Thurston and Harry Houdini, and the multitalented acts of Vaudeville.

Providing visual color were the gritty interpretations of Robert Henri and George Bellows, the pastel loveliness of Mary Cassatt, the rainy splendor of Childe Hassam, and the decorative vision of Tiffany. Taylor Haywood is an award-winning writer, scholar, and professor at FAU. Presented in conjunction with the art exhibition In A New Light: American Impressionism 1870-1940, Works from the Bank of America Collection (see Page 12).

Reading the Divine Comedy: The Inferno with Joseph Luzzi, Ph.D. ** VIRTUAL PROGRAM ** 10 to 11:30 a.m., February 15, 17, and 22 $225 for series As we celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s death, what makes his Divine Comedy such essential reading today? This course will explore the fascinating Inferno of Dante in all its cultural and historical richness, as we consider Dante’s relation to his beloved hometown of Florence, his lacerating experience of exile, and his lifelong devotion to his muse Beatrice. We will pay special attention to the originality and brilliance of Dante’s poetic vision that transformed his great poem into one of the most influential works in literary history. Vorticism was London’s short-lived Modernist response to Parisian Cubism and Italian Futurism, from 1912-1915. Named by Ezra Pound, theorized by T.E. Hulme, and led by Percy Wyndham Lewis, Vorticism drew around it an avant-garde Bohemian circle in London in direct opposition to the Bloomsbury Group: In addition to Lewis its artists included the painters Edward Wadsworth, David Bomberg and William Roberts, and the sculptors Henri Gaudier-Brzeska and Jacob Epstein.

April 11: Surrealism Part I

Surrealism was the only major avant-garde to emerge in Paris between the two World Wars. It was founded in 1924 as a literary movement, but it quickly became, from 1925, primarily a movement in the visual arts, with Max Ernst, Joan Mirò, Jean Arp, André Masson, Man Ray, Yves Tanguy and Alberto Giacometti among its early protagonists. Building on abstraction and the Dada movement, Surrealism colonized a new territory for art – unconscious mental activity, charted for them

by Sigmund Freud.

April 25: Surrealism Part II

Around 1929, Surrealism became predominantly a figurative pictorial style in contrast to the contemporary abstraction of artists such as Kandinsky and Mondrian. The painters Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, Paul Delvaux and Max Ernst, as well as the film maker Luis Buñuel, illustrated dream imagery inspired by the psychoanalysis of Carl Gustav Jung. Their bizarre fantasies connect them in art history to the likes of Hieronymus Bosch, Richard Dadd, Max Klinger, Arnold Böcklin, and Giorgio de Chirico.

Catherine Grace Katz is a writer and historian from Chicago who holds degrees in history from Harvard and Cambridge.

Bruce Helander’s latest book presents an artist’s view on the amazing creative designs found in vintage handkerchiefs, examining the inherent attractiveness of functional repeat patterns. Having collected hundreds of distinctive pocket squares, Helander presents the essence of useful square patterns that become folded works of utilitarian sculptural art, including his wife’s wedding dress, hand-sewn out of antique white handkerchiefs.

Michel Witmer, Chairman of the Fine Art Committee at The Society of the Four Arts, discusses the paintings from 85 years of exhibitions, the state of the Society’s current art collection, and possible future directions.

Priscilla Rattazzi Hoodooland Thursday, January 27, 2022 at 11 a.m. $20 • No charge for Four Arts members Priscilla Rattazzi sealed her reputation as a fashion photographer in the 1980s. By the end of that decade, Ms. Rattazzi, an Italian Roman living in New York, had turned from fashion to portraiture, capturing the likenesses of Diana Vreeland, Loulou de la Falaise, and Gianni Agnelli (her uncle). In her latest series, “Hoodooland,” Rattazzi brings to life the amazing, endangered Hoodoo rock sculptures of southern Utah.

Her work is a simultaneous homage to a magical landscape and an impassioned retort to the 2017 Presidential order to reduce the area’s protected lands by nearly half. She will discuss her career in photography, and what moved her to fix her lens on the region around Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument, in Utah.

Desmond Shawe-Taylor, recently retired as Surveyor of The Queen’s Pictures, will correct this bias, tracing the history of the palace from its acquisition in 1762 through its subsequent transformations. Conn has a degree in art history from Wake Forest.

Upon his death in 1976, the curators of the newly founded Getty Trust went on a buying spree, often without paying due attention to the provenance of artworks. This resulted in the purchase of hundreds of looted antiquities, many of which had to be returned to their source countries.

Dr. Silvia Beltrametti is a Lecturer in the Department of Art History, Theory and Criticism at the School of the Art Institute of Chicago.

Hard power now includes nuclear and conventional weaponry, space and cyber forces. China, Russia, North Korea and Iran have been rapidly building hard power, while American hard power appears to be declining. Should America reduce its footprint in the world to avoid conflict, or should it strengthen its power dramatically to deter its rivals from using theirs? Which is the best path to peace? Palm Beach resident Daniel Quinn Mills has a Ph.D. in economics from Harvard and is the author of several books.

He foresaw the role that parks can play for the enactment of democracy in a multi-ethnic, multiracial society. Laurence Cotton, originator and consulting producer of a PBS film about Olmsted (screening Wednesday, March 30), will examine these themes during a travelogue of Olmsteddesigned master landscapes across North America.

Trace the evolution of the French château from the earliest stone donjons and châteaux forts of the Middle Ages, through the magnificent Renaissance châteaux built by the Valois kings in the Loire Valley upon their return from the Italian Wars, and on to the châteaux de plaisance built by the Bourbon kings and queens and their court in and around Paris in the French Baroque/Classical style. Kelley will conclude with the Château du Louvre, whose history spans eight centuries. Kelley is the author of The Making of Paris: The Story of How Paris Evolved from a Fishing Village into the World’s Most Beautiful City (Lyons Press, 2021), and Vice President of the Alliance Française Miami Metro. He has lived in France for nearly 30 years and has visited every château featured in this series many times since his first visit to the Loire Valley 50 years ago.

The era from World War I through The Jazz Age and just beyond World War II in England and France was a time of explosive creativity in the arts, world political upheaval, and enormous technological advances that changed everyday life. Tania & Lazlo, Visual Art and Photography Tania Brassesco & Lazlo Passi Norberto are an Italian artist duo formed in 2009. They work in the field of visual art and contemporary photography, and are currently based between New York and Venice, Italy.

Their photographic artwork is a fusion of photography, cinema, performance and installation. They create fictional scenes using the photographic media’s “perception of reality” in an altered way. The photographs are originally made creating full-size scale installation from their sketches and ideas, rendered in detail like a movie set. Tania & Lazlo’s work has been internationally recognized with publications, awards and exhibitions. They exhibited in galleries, foundations and museums across Europe, the United States and Asia, and their artworks are part of prestigious public collections.

GARDEN CLUB

Peter Wirtz is an acclaimed Belgian landscape architect who joined the family firm of Wirtz International in 1988. Peter, along with his brother Martin Wirtz and late father Jacques Wirtz, built the firm whose designs have graced gardens of private residences, large estates, public parks, museums, college campuses and corporate headquarters worldwide.

While there is no typical Wirtz garden, the firm’s designs include bold geometry, tamed nature, and unapologetic structure. Wirtz International’s philosophy is based in the classical elements of formal garden design with an intersection of modern sculpture as in the treatment of hedges.

Wirtz International has currently developed and has started construction coordination of the Dior Flagship Store in Paris, a remarkable, technically challenging project. The classic building, under renovation by Peter Marino, has several garden areas on different levels that will showcase not only couture but the highest aesthetic in landscape design.

In addition to public spaces around the world, Wirtz has designed private gardens in Europe, California, New York, New Jersey, Connecticut, Massachusetts, Florida, Chicago, Seattle, and Kansas, and for notable names including Valentino, Catherine Deneuve, and the Belgian royal family. Make Your Own Leather Journal Saturday, February 26, 2022 Presenter: IS Projects

Learn the basic principles of book binding while making a customized and unique soft cover leather travel journal. During this workshop, participants will learn how to prepare the paper and sew it to the leather cover to make a long lasting, sturdy travel journal. Saturday, April 9, 2022 Presenters: Connie Geisler, Ellen Kaufmann, Pam Williams Class participants will receive their own plant, learn the common name, botanical name, and the plant’s unique characteristics, followed by lessons on basic sketching techniques and drawing the plant while in the setting of the beautiful gardens at The Society of the Four Arts. Connie Wheeler Geisler, Ellen Fuller Kaufmann, and Pamela Williams are local artists and members of the Garden Club of Palm Beach, where they participate in the preservation of the demonstration gardens at The Four Arts.

The Children’s Library is located on the second floor of the John E. Rovensky Building. Children are invited to borrow books and enjoy special event programs at no charge. Children of all ages, newborn through 17, must always be chaperoned by an adult while in the Children’s Library. Likewise, all adults must be accompanied by a child.

The Children’s Library is open Monday through Friday from 10 a.m. to 3:45 p.m., and Saturdays during season (November through April) from 10 a.m. to 12:45 p.m. Visit www.fourarts.org for complete details.
