HARD BODIES

CONTEMPORARY JAPANESE LACQUER SCULPTURE

Hard Bodies: Contemporary Japanese Lacquer Sculpture is organized by the Minneapolis Institute of Art and toured by International Arts & Artists, Washington, DC.

Lacquer is a tradition nearly as old as civilization itself. Since Neolithic times, artisans in East Asia have used the toxic sap of the lacquer tree (toxicodendron vernicifluum) to coat and bond together wood, bamboo, textiles, and ceramics to make utilitarian and ritual items. The natural polymer refined from the sap forms a durable, waterproof surface that protects and beautifies. Lacquerware was — and still is — prized for its sheen, which artists have learned to accentuate over the centuries with inlaid gold, silver, mother-of-pearl, and other precious materials. Since the late 1980s, this tradition has been challenged. A small but enterprising circle of artists began pushing the medium in entirely new and dynamic directions by creating large-scale sculptures, works that are both conceptually innovative and superbly exploitative of lacquer’s natural qualities. These artists mastered lacquer’s demanding techniques while successfully altering its age-old perception by expanding boundaries and defying Organizedexpectations.by the Minneapolis Institute of Art, the 33 works by 16 artists in Hard Bodies constitute the first-ever comprehensive exhibition of contemporary Japanese lacquer sculpture. All the works are from MIA’s Clark Collection, which is named for longtime Japanophiles Willard and Elizabeth Clark, who donated over 1,700 artworks to MIA in 2013. The Clark Collection is the only collection in the world to feature this extraordinary new form.

Contemplating Character explores the evolution of portraiture in 81 works on paper by 68 artists. Executed by some of the most famous portraitists in Europe and America, the works range in date from the 18th century to present day and encompass the many art styles and movements during this expanse of time. Collectively, they reveal the challenge of artists engaged with portraiture: accurately to portray an individual’s physical appearance and capture the sitter’s personality and soul. Angeli is highly successful in his native capital of Vienna, where he has been given exhibitions in the Rupertinum, the Historisches Museum, the Belvedere and the Albertina (twice). He has also exhibited in the Museo Correr in Venice, and spent 10 years as a Board member of Vienna’s University of Applied Arts. This is Angeli’s first exhibition in the United States and The Four Arts is proud and grateful that the artist has conceded this honor to Palm Beach. This exhibition is curated by Philip Rylands, President and CEO of The Society of the Four Arts, and organized by The Four Arts.

Eduard Angeli (b. Austria, 1942) began spending summers in Venice, Italy in 2002 and 2003 and in 2004 he went there to live. Before this he had lived, and painted, in Istanbul and more recently sojourned for a long period in St. Petersburg. Hence the title of this exhibition, with eighteen large works depicting motifs from these three cities. He is a landscape painter in his favored medium of charcoal. His motifs derive from but do not copy nature. They instead convey ‘ideas’, or realities beyond appearances: ideas that Descartes would classify as ‘adventitious’ and which evoke hidden and mysterious sensations. This places him in a line of descent from 19th century Symbolism and the ‘metaphysical’ painting of Giorgio de Chirico. In particular his somber scenes, deprived of human beings, echoing what commentators of Edward Hopper’s art call “the loneliness thing”, express a delicious, sentimental melancholy, just as de Chirico’s paintings do. The fog and the dark palette in his image of Palladio’s Redentore convey the ‘idea’ that this is a votive church commemorating Venice’s survival of the plague in 1576: the Giudecca Canal doubles as the River Styx.

The Sculpture Garden first opened in November of 1980. The Four Arts has owned this 2.2-acre expanse of land since the mid 1960s, but it remained unused until 1979, when Four Arts’ member Mrs. John Clifford Folger asked Philip Hulitar, a fashion designer, and former Four Arts’ Chairman of the Board, to transform the undeveloped space into a sculpture garden. Mr. Hulitar also helped acquire the first sculptures that adorned its grounds. The garden was renamed the Philip Hulitar Sculpture Garden in 1988 in honor of his continued support and many years of service to The Four Arts. The Sculpture Garden has evolved over time, especially in the mid 2000s after a series of hurricanes. The landscape architecture firm Morgan Wheelock, Inc., was hired to redesign the gardens, which reopened in March of 2007. The firm transformed the Sculpture Garden into an outdoor fine arts gallery that included new sculptures, additional seating, water fountains, and a new garden pavilion donated by Mr. and Mrs. William G. Pannill. The most visited space at The Four Arts, the Sculpture Garden is a hidden gem in the Palm Beach community.

Planted in 1938 by members of the Garden Club of Palm Beach, many of whom were also members of The Four Arts, the Botanical Gardens were conceived as demonstration gardens to educate new residents about the types of plants that thrive in South Florida. It was designed in a series of small, thematic gardens inspired by architectural styles popular in the Town of Palm Beach: Chinese Garden (Mrs. Lorenzo Woodhouse), Italian Garden (Mrs. Joseph Cudahy), Moonlight Garden (Mrs. Joseph F. Gunster), Bermuda-style English Garden (Mrs. Clifford V. Brokaw), Rose Garden (Hugh Dillman), Jungle Garden (Dr. Leroy Dow), Madonna Tropical Fruit Garden (Mrs. Alfred G. Kay), and the Spanish Patio (Mrs. John S. Phipps). Today, the Botanical Gardens remain an important demonstration garden to the community, but they have changed over time. In 1956, the landscape architecture firm Innocenti & Webel restored the space after it fell into disrepair and Morgan Wheelock, Inc. redesigned it after the devastating hurricanes of the mid-2000s.

The Four Arts is grateful to The Garden Club of Palm Beach, which continues to maintain the beautiful garden on behalf of The Four Arts. To learn more, visit gardenclubpalmbeach.com.

Calidore String Quartet Sunday, January 15, 2023 at 3 p.m. Recipient of an Avery Fisher Career Grant and a Lincoln Center Emerging Artist Award, the Calidore String Quartet first made international headlines as winner of the Grand Prize of the 2016 M-Prize International Chamber Music Competition. Currently in residence with the Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center’s Bowers Program, the ensemble’s name is an amalgamation of “California” and “doré” (French for “golden”). Praise for the quartet includes its “deep reserves of virtuosity and irrepressible dramatic instinct” (New York Times) and “four more individual musicians are unimaginable, yet these speak, breathe, think and feel as one” (Washington Post).

Paul Huang, violin and Anne-Marie McDermott, piano Wednesday, January 18, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. The Gubelmann Auditorium plays center stage for a blockbuster violinpiano duo recital by Paul Huang and Anne-Marie McDermott, two superb masters of the genre. A colorful international tour begins in Estonia, with Arvo Pärt’s mystical, chant-influenced Mirror in the Mirror. Next, the duo moves to Russia for Prokofiev’s haunting and intense first violin sonata written during World War II. After intermission, the mood is lightened in Vienna by a vivacious and charming sonata from Mozart, and the program closes in New York with music of the acclaimed American composer John Corigliano, his early violin sonata, written for his father who was concertmaster of the New York Philharmonic.

The Emerson String Quartet has been one of the world’s premier chamber music ensembles for more than four decades, keeping the string quartet form alive and relevant. The quartet plans to disband in October 2023, so The Four Arts is honored to be a part of its final season, hosting an evening of Haydn, Mendelssohn, and Beethoven. “With musicians like this,” wrote a reviewer for The Times (London), “there must be some hope for humanity.” The Quartet has made more than 30 acclaimed recordings and has been honored with nine Grammys (including two for Best Classical Album), three Gramophone Awards, the Avery Fisher Prize, and Musical America’s “Ensemble of the Year” award.

The Romeros Guitar Quartet

Sunday, January 22, 2023 at 3 p.m. Known as “The Royal Family of the Guitar,” the Romeros were founded by Celedonio Romero and his sons in 1958. The Quartet today consists of the second (Celin & Pepe) and third generations (Lito & Celino). To have so many virtuosi of the same instrument in one family is unique. The New York Times has said: “Collectively, they are the only classical guitar quartet of real stature in the world today; in fact, they virtually invented the format.” The Romeros have helped create an entirely new repertoire for guitar quartet, both as a chamber ensemble and as a concerto soloist, and have inspired distinguished composers to either write new works or arrange existing ones.

CMSLCCourtesy and largely unnoticed except for his famous songs, he yearned for the kind of immortality virtually guaranteed to his idol Beethoven. Undeterred by lack of money, exposure, or wide accolades, he forged ahead in the face of an early death to create some of music’s most timeless and beloved works, most first heard only years after he was gone. This festival looks at Schubert from three perspectives: the relationship between his incomparable lieder and his instrumental music; his influences and their effect on his compositions; and the consequence of his last efforts, which afforded him, eventually, the immortality he hoped so dearly for, and a secure place in the Pantheon of musical gods.–

Schubert Revealed I

The concept of fantasy took the artistic world by storm during the 19th century, and no one expressed the idea better than Franz Schubert, whose music ushered in the age of Romanticism. In a program that closely links Schubert’s genius in the art song genre with his memorable chamber works, we will hear how intrinsic the vocal line was to Schubert’s thinking, as well as experience a poetic imagination second to none.

Schubert Revealed III Sunday, March 12, 2023 at 3 p.m. While much of the classical music canon is truly great, some works cross the artistic line into the realm of the transcendental.

No words can adequately describe what the music of Schubert has meant to me during my lifetime. Without understanding why, his works reduced me to tears as I played them in my youngest years at the piano, and through to this day they continue to reach the innermost part of my soul in ways both familiar and new. And I am far from alone when it comes to my feelings about Schubert. Schubert led an unconventional life, for he famously professed not to care about anything other than music and his friends. Poor, in ill health during his mature years,

Schubert Revealed II Wednesday, March 8, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Little Franz Schubert (he was barely five feet tall) observed the towering composers of his time and drew inspiration from their works. The ever-present giant in his life was Ludwig van Beethoven, his idol both artistically and as a composer of lasting consequence. Schubert was also duly entranced by the virtuosity and lyrical wizardry of Niccolò Paganini, who led Schubert to believe that nothing was impossible on the violin.

Schubert’s final piano trio (1827) which opens this program was the most massive and emotionally deep chamber work in the genre, comparable only to Beethoven’s final piano trio of 1811 (the “Archduke”). And to close this festival, we offer perhaps the most universally revered chamber music work ever composed, Schubert’s Cello Quintet, completed on his deathbed and filled with music so overwhelming that one can only wonder what the composer could have given us had he lived past the age of 31.

The program illustrates a variety of classical dance elements, acrobatics, stunts, and temperament of the male dancers, as well as the graceful, charming, and gorgeous steps of the female dancers. “This stunning and exhilarating dance show has some of the most exciting routines to ever appear on stage!” said The Guardian (U.K.).

Chamber Music Society of Lincoln Center, “Voices of the Americas” Wednesday, March 15, 2023 at 7:30 p.m. Experience the wide range of ideas, sounds, and cultures that have inspired composers from the Americas in the 20th century. The program opens and closes with vibrant, beloved classics by Copland and Gershwin brought about by their travels to Latin America. In between are personal statements inspired by things close to each composers’ heart — their relationship with religion, their interpretation of native fold music, and a deeply intimate reaction to the death of a friend. Take a trip in sound from the pulsating dance hall to the quietest prayer in this exploration of music from the Western Hemisphere.

Will China continue its long-held territorial ambitions in the South China Sea indeed, could China look to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine as a blueprint for its desired “reunification” with Taiwan? Reexamining Chamberlain’s Negotiations with Hitler:

Prime Minister Neville Chamberlain’s negotiation with Adolph Hitler at Munich in 1938 is often cited as one of the worst outcomes of diplomatic negotiation in modern history, a failed attempt at appeasement that led Hitler to believe that his European foes had no appetite for war and would do almost nothing to stand in his way. In this fascinating examination of the real negotiations at Munich, Harvard Business School’s Deepak Malhotra will draw lessons for strategy, leadership, and deal-making from this seminal moment of the 20th century.

In the 19th century, Americans traveled to bathe in the outdoors and soak up the warm climate of Florida. The world has ground to a halt in spring 2020. In the rarified hamlet of Palm Beach, its residents quarantine as an unseasonable heat wave – and a virus – descend upon them. A husband and children go missing while a wife delays reporting it, a writer works to solve a decades-old murder, and a human hand is found on the beach by a passing surfer – as all these paths steadily converge on Reef Road.

The Honorable Alice D. McKerrity has seen the most hardened killers pass through her courtroom. But this trial – a defendant charged with the murder of a pregnant woman – affects her as no other case has. Harboring a secret that if exposed could have large ramifications, her stressful home life only adds to mounting feelings of panic and fear in this spellbinding tale of guilt, justice, and long-awaited retribution. 61

Rita, a young artist, paints and dreams of one day living in the big city despite the lush tropical island she lives in. When a hurricane thrusts Rita and her mother into a new life in an urban metropolis, she struggles to adapt to her new environment. Feeling lost and like everything she knew, including her talents, were washed away by the storm, Rita embarks on a journey that helps her re-define what home means to her. With a little help from her new friends and her family, Rita’s spirits lift as she explores the beauty of her new city, igniting a new sense of home, and the realization that her talents never left her.
