For some of us, the changes are more drastic than others, depending on when you graduated. And it’s funny how life goes on without us. Even though we only graduated a couple of years ago, it’s hard to fathom that FVS has changed when the memories are still so vivid in our minds.

When tasked with editing a “young alumni takeover” of the Bulletin by Jeanne Olive, the Director and Marketing and Communications at FVS, we weren’t sure how to go about our job. What defines young alumni? Are they summable or definable? How are they different than any other graduates who walked the same stucco halls? Ultimately, we—and these other young writers—spoke for ourselves.

In curating these stories, we came up with some questions to base this exploration around: What would we like to read about? Who haven’t we heard from in a while? How has FVS changed in the near term—and long term?

With this in mind and the knowledge that, like all FVS graduates, young alumni run the gauntlet of diversity, we curated a wideranging selection of pieces that appeal to all of us—new and old alumni alike.

Within this issue, you’ll learn about how to best leverage your FVS community, immerse yourself in love stories that began on campus and extended far beyond it, get the latest advice from Dr. G, hear about the paths of up-and-coming artists—and much more. Join us in this look backward—and forward—at the FVS experience.

Sage Marshall ’14 is a freelance writer and editor who focuses on the outdoors and the arts. He was recently selected for the prestigious American Society of Magazine Editors Summer Internship, where he worked on a variety of editing and writing projects at Field & Stream Magazine. Dear Friends, This “Young Alumni Takeover” issue is particularly exciting as it showcases the talents and viewpoints of our recent graduates.

Just last night, we had the pleasure of supporting Ellen Kerchner ’11 as she received the Inspired Future Award from the Palmer Land Trust in operating New Roots Farm in Cañon City for “exhibiting gumption and grit in the face of challenges, and encouraging others with the resilience and optimism it will take to advance conservation.”

It’s gratifying to see how our alumni continue to grow as impressive young adults!

You’ll find an essay where the infamous miller moths play a key role, an advice column from Dr. Gilbert who answers pressing young-alumni questions, enduring FVS love stories, a poignant piece about the intersection of race and class at Fountain Valley, along with poems, art and more.

You’ll also find the 2017-18 Annual Report in this issue, a chronicle of the generous support of so many alumni, parents, grandparents, and friends of the School. Thank you again to all of you who gave, exceeding our $1.3 million Annual Fund goal!

The future is bright at Fountain Valley. We opened the school year with 240 students who, thanks to our generous donors, will very soon have the great pleasure of utilizing our fantastic new Athletic Center nearing completion. We are just shy of achieving our $25 million Capital Campaign goal and, as always, should you wish to join this historic initiative, please do be in touch with me!

Bailey Knecht ’13 and Doug Davlin ’58 discuss what’s changed—and what hasn’t—about the FVS experience.

Being a part of the Fountain Valley community tends to feel a bit like being a part of a secret club: we all have an eclectic collection of memories that mark our time at FVS. For me, it includes sneaking out the back gate to go to Sonic before volleyball practice, sea kayaking through the Sea of Cortez as Mr. Gustke pointed out the different animals we saw, and, most of all, meeting a group of day student girls at freshman orientation whom I remain close with to this day.

During the 2018 Alumni Weekend, I, just five years out, struck up a conversation with Doug Davlin ’58, 60 years since his graduation, about our individual experiences at Fountain Valley.

“It was my first time going away from home, and I loved it,” said Doug, who had previously been homeschooled. “I loved the responsibility and the freedom, but in the same token, I was here under a scholarship, and so I felt tremendous pressure not to screw up and get thrown out [laughs]. As a result, I spent more time studying than I ever had in my entire life.”

I had felt the same way. I believed I had to keep up with my classmates to prove I belonged there. Having spent my life in public school up to that point, FVS was a completely different ballgame. Proving myself also included throwing myself headlong into sports. I played volleyball, basketball and lacrosse, whereas Doug played tennis, squash and soccer. Both of us often faced off against more talented teams.

“In soccer, the only team I remember playing against was the Air Academy, and we got wiped out every time,” he said. “They were bigger and faster.”

My lacrosse experience with that school was similar: It was snowing, the field conditions were terrible, and we got absolutely demolished to the tune of 25-5. Even though I still shudder when I think about that game, Doug and I agreed that those types of games brought us even closer to our teammates.

the new chapel in lieu of playing a sport.

Imagine students being commissioned to perform manual labor for the new athletic facility! Maybe it’s better that some FVS activities were left in the past.

Speaking of extracurriculars, I brought up Interim, specifically my kayaking trip to Baja, Mexico. Although the School didn’t have Interim when Doug attended, he enjoyed a number of the uniquely-FVS experiential learning opportunities. He recalled taking a class called geomorphology, during which the students would pile into a van and head west, learning about the physical features of Colorado along the way.

More than anything, Fountain Valley showed us that there is no one route that is better than another. Beyond the test scores and college acceptances, FVS teaches us the importance of seeking out our own paths and pursuing our own passions.

Next, I wanted to know if Doug had a favorite spot on campus.

“I used to be the manager of the school store, and we had a basement for storing inventory, and you could go down there and smoke cigarettes,” he said with a laugh. “So that was the favorite place.”

“There also used to be a road from campus that went out the back way,” he added. “We would order pizza and get it delivered there.”

He was pleased to hear that the infamous back road was still used, decades later, for

In other ways, the campus had significantly changed since both of our times here.

“We only had four tennis courts, and they were terrible,” Doug said. “I remember wearing out a pair of tennis shoes from sliding on it. We also used to have an unheated swimming pool that freshmen would get thrown into.”

“I love the campus now,” he added in reference to all the new buildings, including the new dining room.

When I drove into Fountain Valley for Alumni Weekend, I was also struck by the changes to the campus. The roads were diverted to different areas, a brand-new athletic facility was well in the works, the steps leading up to the campus center were updated, and the dining room offered new drink choices.

Despite this, Doug and I agreed that the campus still feels like home, even after all these years.

After high school, Doug dropped out of the University of Colorado because he spent more time on the ski slopes than in the classroom. He got a job at Coors working on the filler line, then finished school at the University of Denver with a degree in child psychology. He went on to work at a bank, then became a teacher in Alaska, before eventually working as a field systems engineer for Apple.

—the class of 2013—is a prime example of this. I have a classmate who works in Denver to pass public health initiatives while preventing fatal overdoses and the spread of HIV among drug users, another who teaches English at an independent coeducational high school in Vermont, another leading groups of teenagers on outdoor trips in Minnesota, and yet another who is well on his way to being a pilot for a major airline.

These jobs may be a bit unexpected for the traditional prep school graduate—as was Doug’s post-grad life—but they demonstrate how varied the Fountain Valley experience is.

“The best education I ever got was right here,” Doug concluded.

Delia Rose Brekken ’14 writes about the intersection of race and class in relation to her time at FVS. At age 13, I had been not only admitted to but offered generous scholarships that allowed me to attend FVS, which maintained a tuition rate higher than most public universities and more than quintupled the entire disposable income of my household. Without my mother’s understanding of how to navigate the application process, my impeccable academic record, my representation of diversity, and my excellence in extracurricular activities, I simply never would have had access to the privilege and intellectual freedom I gained as an FVS student.

But this didn’t come without its struggles.

I was a three-sport varsity athlete, which was something I carried with me from my experience growing up in the surrounding multiethnic community where the six percent of us who lived below the poverty line found solace in releasing physical stress on the court and in the field. I was also three years into my study of violin and actively participated in the music programs offered at Fountain Valley. The physical expression of my body through sports and music played a major role in finding my place on campus, yet I always worried that my ability to perform was expected. When I became overwhelmed by the responsibility of participating in an extremely challenging academic and social environment, I would shoot free throws in the dusty old gym or pour out my soul on the piano in the barracks (a.k.a. the band room) below the dining room.

Moreover, I was constantly asked to speak from my experience of being a minority, of being Black, yet this was something altogether frightening and frustrating. I neither felt qualified nor connected to my Black and Native father who had been absent during my youth.

I stepped up to the task willingly, however, stubbornly refusing to give up the prodigious opportunity I had been given to be a part of the FVS community. I became president of the Student Diversity Club, a space that offered conversation and participation in culturally-focused dialogue and events, most of which occurred off campus.

However, what this club lacked most was its essential component—diversity. My leadership role within this organization was less about my enthusiasm for the community created from the club (or lack thereof) and more of a political platform I used to speak and express my identity as a minority on campus.

Similarly, I was asked to deliver the speeches on Martin Luther King Jr. Day, honoring his service to the progression of true freedom for Black Americans. I led the Kwanzaa presentation at Winter Celebration. And, I fervidly explained racism over and over and over again during class discussions. I was relentless in my representation of myself as a Black person within the FVS community, both because I thought it was what I owed, being the only student in my class accomplished enough and equally poor enough to receive full scholarship coverage of my tuition, and also because performing as a Black person within the FVS community gave me confidence in an identity which had only ever been attached to the knowledge that my father was a Black man.

I was stuck not knowing how I could attend senior year. I attempted to join the day-student bus system, but was denied because I didn’t live close enough to any of the pick-up points. Then, I was blessed when a peer, someone who I was merely acquainted with, stepped up and offered to drive me to school every day. This allowed me to participate in my final year at FVS, solidify my hard work, and push me into the next four years beyond high school to higher education at a top private Jesuit University. This kindness was one of the most important aspects of my experience at FVS, and I still treasure it.

Today, I chose to write this poem in the hopes of revealing some truth to my experience during my time as a Dane, but also as an acknowledgment of my faith in the potential for the pedagogy offered to every student who has the chance to challenge their conception of the world through the FVS curriculum.

Ultimately, I continue to serve my Fountain Valley community by interacting with my environment in a critical, meaningful and compassionate manner.

I chose to write this, fundamentally, as an act of gratitude.

This Q and A is a glimpse into the enduring romances of three couples who share how their love first bloomed, and then endured, at Fountain Valley.

WHEN AND WHERE DID YOU FIRST MEET? WHAT WERE YOUR FIRST IMPRESSIONS OF EACH OTHER?

I

Michaela: We first met freshman year, probably during freshman retreat. Our first memories of each other are from Mr. Payne’s global studies class, freshman year. We were partners for some assignments. In terms of first impressions, we both thought the other was cute, but that’s about it.

In our modern-day, Instagram-crazed society, the idea of love is often romanticized as an instant spark that ignites a lifelong relationship. I was once a subscriber to this fantasy, and though I would not realize it until college, FVS taught me that you can’t build an everlasting fireworks show from a single sparkler. Instead, I saw the lasting effort it takes to maintain a strong, healthy relationship from my dorm parents, who were quintessential role models, and the student couples who were just testing the waters of long-term relationships. Some of those couples are still together today, while others have parted ways. Now, years after graduation, the question remains: What does it take to get from starry-eyed high school sweethearts to a mature, dedicated couple?

Sophie: Surprisingly, we met in fourth grade.

However, I do remember seeing Graham on campus as a freshman and immediately recognizing him. I never thought we would date, but we were instantly great friends!

Pranay: Stacia and I first met on the “Pueblo bus.” We had a decent daily commute, so we had a lot of time to get to know each other.

My first impression of Stacia was that she was a good four inches taller than me. Her first impression of me was that I took my love of heavy metal too seriously. Our chemistry was not immediate (though we did take a chemistry class together sophomore year). It would take years of commuting, struggling with APUSH homework, and tag-teaming our day-student leader duties before we saw the potential. But by senior year, we were inseparable.

As any alums of FVS will know, the faculty and staff are highly invested in our growth both academically and socially. Were there any teachers who encouraged you to get together?

Michaela and Owen: NO [Laughing]!

Graham and Sophie: Nope!

Stacia: Pranay and I shared several teachers, many of whom were happy to see us get together. Our friendship was strengthened considerably when we took AP Physics (Pranay had a natural aptitude for physics and spent a lot of his free time getting me up to scratch).

Our physics teacher, Mr. Nickerson, who was also Pranay’s adviser, was openly supportive of our relationship from the get-go. Our AP English teacher, Dr. Carrese, and our AP Bio teacher, Mr. Rubenstein, were also vocal about their support of our relationship and were happy to see that we were still together at our five-year reunion.

The friends we make at FVS are just as invested in us as the teachers in helping us to shape our futures. What role did your friends play in getting you two together, if any?

Who asked out who first?

To the person who was asked out, did you expect the question was coming?

Michaela: Owen asked me out during a free block senior year, and yes, I totally knew it was coming. A few friends made sure to ask me months in advance if I’d be interested in dating him.

Michaela: A few friends encouraged us to start dating senior year, more on Owen’s side than mine. People were pushing him to ask me out, which I’m glad he finally did.

Sophie: Emma Reynolds ’13 and Mara Whitehead ’13 encouraged Graham to ask me out when we were on WIP [Western Immersion Program].

Sophie: Graham asked me out after we beat CSS [Colorado Springs School] in volleyball in a very exciting match. We often went to Sonic together after school and did so that evening after the game. Graham said goodbye and left the car, ran around and opened the door and awkwardly asked me out. It was very cute.

Pranay: This is an area of internal debate because after Club Frautschi, we both knew that we liked each other. No matter what Stacia says, I maintain that I formally asked her out first.

Stacia: Though Pranay and I had different social circles during our first years of school, we developed common friendships as our time at FVS went on. We shared a friend group with our fellow “Pueblo bus” riders. We were close friends before we started dating, so when we finally got together during senior year, many mutual friends couldn’t resist the urge to tell us, “I told you so.”

The Fountain Valley population is tight knit and you get to know your fellow classmates and teachers very well within a short period of time. In your opinion, do you think there was something about the FVS community that brought you closer together than if you had been in college or a different school?

Michaela: Being at FVS allowed us to share a set of unique experiences. Ultimately though, we just clicked. We were able to grow and mature separately before dating at the end of senior year, which set us up for long-term success.

Sophie: I don’t think this had much of an effect. I have very fond memories of watching Graham at soccer games and on ski team.

We also participated in the winter musical together [West Side Story].

Stacia: The unique experience of commuting an hour and a half on the bus together each day, working late into the night on coursework, and carpooling to events like choir concerts and “Cupid Night Out” contributed to our friendship and eventual relationship. The Fountain Valley experience is so immersive that we developed a strong relationship very quickly, just by the nature of shared experience.

Since leaving FVS, what has helped to keep your relationship strong?

Michaela: We like each other. We have the world’s cutest dog. We bring out the best in one another. Together, we’re badass!

Sophie: We are always honest with each other. We made a point to attend different colleges and have become very good at helping each other grow and pursue opportunities that might have ended other couples’ relationships.

Pranay: A lot of what has helped us stay strong was sharing common values and communication styles, which FVS helped us cultivate. We were also fortunate enough to go to the same college and continue growing together after we graduated high school.

Final Thoughts While each of these relationships grew in unique ways, there was one common theme that remained strong: solid friendships. I spoke to someone whose romantic relationship did not last long after the couple departed Fountain Valley, and even he could attest to the distinct power of the School in fostering these kinds of friendships.

CLEARLY COMMUNICATE YOUR CONNECTION to Fountain Valley. One of the main reasons alumni are open to helping you is that you both went to FVS. Let them know you found them through your mutual connection to the school.

SEEK ADVICE. You will receive more from someone if you seek advice as opposed to immediately asking for a job.

Once you are finished talking, it is okay to mention you are seeking opportunities in the same field as them, but never lead with it. As Webb puts it, “Your end goal should not be to get something from somebody, but rather to connect and build a relationship.”

- Wanna Have It All ‘96

You’ve picked a hot-button issue!!! There’s no short answer to this question.

When I was your age and running Outdoor Ed, I did a poor job of balancing family life and outdoor adventure. My spouse and children will tell you that fall and spring I was always gone on some trip to the mountains. It was my job, I rationalized, to lead students into remote areas of Colorado and instill in them the fire to explore the wilderness. I can’t undo what has been done, but I can pass along what has happened since you graduated.

Twenty odd years later, I made a point to have plenty of outdoor adventures with my family, starting out with our two kids carrying nothing much more than a few stuffed animals in daypacks, while the adults shuttled loads in heavy backpacks into a basecamp in the backcountry.

After one memorable hike into a remote Utah canyon, our children announced that the best thing about the trip was the pool at the motel afterwards! As a parent, comments like that can be discouraging. But persevere; In the end, the kids will turn out just fine!

For example, our daughter recently returned with a couple of friends to the very canyon of motel-pool fame and sent us photos of the group sleeping out on a sandstone bench high above the canyon floor.

At some point, we must have gradually passed along enough outdoor knowledge and skills that our children are now very competent outdoorspeople. It all culminated when a group of three families, all friends from college, met in the Cirque of the Towers in the Wind Rivers of Wyoming for a two-week climbing camp. The adults pushed

themselves on some harder climbs (for people in their 50s), while taking time to teach our offspring the basics of climbing. By the end, the younger members had all gone out in teams of two or three on day-long climbs of the surrounding peaks that ended with long series of rappels from the summit! Everyone came back safely and elated. I returned to Colorado feeling as if we had passed the torch to the next generation!

In short, you may find you have to moderate your personal goals for the sake of your family, but the rewards are perhaps even greater than any personal accomplishment you might achieve at this point in your life. Don’t get me wrong, opportunities will pop up now and then for an outing that will push you to your limits, but your family deserves the most attention in the coming years.

- Ready to Leave Dumb College Boys Behind ‘14 What were you thinking? You can’t actually have expected a college boy to be mature enough for an emotional relationship! Don’t you know the prefrontal lobe of the male brain doesn’t develop until after age 25—or even later in some models?!

However, “dumb college boys” do mature... eventually.

And I am told by single friends, young and old, you will have to go the route of dating apps as they cast a wider net than you ever can socially. (I’m sorry if I appear to underestimate your ability to extend yourself socially. And you probably know much more than I about dating apps, but I just spent a week with a single male friend who spends too much time on his dating app, so I feel like I now have some first-

hand knowledge. Please humor me for a few more moments!) Yes, the parent in me says that they do give off the wrong impression when you use one. But I’ve seen adults closer to my age use them successfully, starting with an email, leading to phone conversations, and eventually to face-to-face meetings, and even, to a marriage that has lasted 15 years and produced two wonderful children!

But beware: like most social media, they bank on you churning through the dating options on a daily basis and frantically contacting tons of prospective people, all guided by the fear that if you don’t keep up with the choices, you will miss the perfect person who will magically arrive in your inbox tomorrow! That’s FOMO to the extreme!

“ What do you do to de-stress when your life gets hectic?”

- Too Tense ’05 My go-to is a long walk or run. It takes me about half an hour to let go of the day and find peace with my surroundings. Then, I can then mull over the stress from a distance, solve problems and make plans.

To achieve nirvana, I go climbing. There’s something about the focus needed to lead a pitch that drives away distraction and allows me to re-center. There’s the additional plus of having to trust the person belaying you, which makes it possible to connect with the other human who is tied into the other end of the rope.

“ I’m a recent college grad moving to a brand new city later this month. How do you recommend meeting new people, outside of just my office?”

- Frightful of Friendlessness ‘13 You are talking to the wrong person about this, as I am no spring chicken, much less a millennial!

Here in Colorado, however, plenty of young people join groups, probably through social media. I have met a number who go on outings with the Colorado Mountain Club, and others who meet up with a group to go running, hiking or biking. The point is to find others who share your interests. Take art classes. Do volunteer work. Find alumni groups from your college or university. My guess is that you will have to try a number of different activities before you find one where you meet like-minded adults. But be patient and get yourself out there! Personally, I’ve made plenty of acquaintances at the local climbing gyms over the years. There’s even a local Meetup app for this sort of thing. I’d say it’s far better than hanging out in a bar expecting to strike up a friendship with the tipsy people surrounding you.

“ What is one of your favorite historical moments or stories that you’d like all of your ex-students to know about?”

- Hoping for History ’09 I have a background in American history, but in the last decade I have been fortunate enough to have explored world history, which is a 21st-century phenomenon in the U.S. academic world, now that Eurocentric Western Civ is out of favor. I am totally excited about looking beyond the U.S. to try to understand what happened in the rest of the world while

we were building a nation. Even better, I like to look into the more distant past to study peoples who shaped other parts of the world.

I’d like to see former students branch out and read the narratives of non-American peoples, both in fiction and non-fiction, to become students without borders.

Friday: Saying Hello

In early June, our prairie yucca blossomed and hundreds of other alumni arrived to the familiar campus. The weekend’s registration took place in the same Campus Center where Luana Jarvis used to ask how our days were, where we basked in the simplicity of free periods spent playing Foosball or eating the RK’s cheesy bagels, and where we checked our mailboxes just because our friends were checking theirs. Now, for the weekend, it was ours again.

After inductions into the Athletic Hall of Fame and the Arts Guild, everyone gathered in the Art Barn, where alumni art hung on the walls and a simple white table held beer and wine. Many of us attempted grabbing a glass of wine, but didn’t end up procuring it until 20 minutes later, distracted by hellos and hugs from old best friends, lacrosse team captains, study buddies and teachers.

Saturday: All School Redux

Saturday morning’s activities appealed to those who knew for certain they could— and would—arise before 8 a.m. The 10-years at least talked about meeting for the trail ride, but us five-years didn’t even make plans to see each other until lunch.

Most of us, however, made it for the AllSchool at noon, where Will Webb invited the class and school presidents from the Class of 2018 to help him run the show.

herself, read her Spring 2018 Athenaea dedication, and I proudly watched from a pew beside my mom and dad, both happy and scared to watch her grow up.

All-School ended and we were released to lunch—I couldn’t imagine it ending any other way. Lunch was a Hawaiian luau complete with a pig roast (head included and on display) and Hula dancers. Looking around, I was struck by the contrast of change and similarity. Things that have

changed: the dining room architecture, the fire throwers, the age and maturity of the faculty kids I used to babysit, and my classmates. Things that haven’t: the white tent many of us graduated beneath, the rough beauty of the prairie, Mr. Emery’s cowboy hat and also, my classmates.

Much of the early afternoon was spent with old friends. While some sat in the cowhide-patterned booths of the RK and snacked on gummy bears, others formed

Sunday: The Last Brunch

The weather cooled for Sunday, and we gathered for one last meal. No matter when you graduated, brunch has only become better, adding both chocolate donuts and roasted mushroom quinoa to its rotation.

The only thing that hasn’t changed (if you graduated in the last 20 years): Rostel making omelets. I told him I don’t even attempt omelets at home now because I grew up spoiled by his every Sunday.

teams for Mr. Reynolds’s Matchwits tournament. Around 2:30 p.m., the Penrose Placita started filling for a celebration of the late Andy Handford— the always-smiling math teacher, coach, dorm parent, and costume lover.* We gathered in the Penrose Placita in honor of Mr. Handford’s Reggae Fest, which for many of us was the hilarious, brightlycolored start of all of our school years.

The celebration defined what FVS was, is, and strives to be: a place where adults and students shed their titles and ages and suffuse their identities into a community that, above all else, is there for each other. There was no podium or order of speakers. When moved, people walked to the front and shared stories of how Andy Handford had changed their lives.

After the celebration concluded, we went back to their dorms and houses to change into our evening wear. Then, we

reconvened in the Hacienda courtyard for drinks and appetizers—noodle bowls served in what looked like Chinese takeout containers. I laughed at the irony of it all: the Reunion’s appetizers were about equivalent to what we would usually eat on Saturday nights at FVS when we decided to order in.

Chandeliers swayed slightly from the tent’s ceiling as we all straightened our dresses and ties on our way to our class tables. Taking up one and a half of our two designated tables, my class year pushed the two together (without spilling any liquid, I might add) so we could reacquaint ourselves with each other. The night progressed with announcements, thank yous and a tenderloin dinner.

The mood was both nostalgic and rowdy, and the live band’s first song was all we needed to leave our tables for the dance floor.

The sky was overcast and the air cool, yet we all sat outside in the campus that was no longer ours. We were all about to leave. I would walk home, my friend would put her dog in her car and drive back to Denver, and others would fly. We’d be back to our regular lives by Monday. So we sat outside, and we lingered long after we cleared our plates.

S

tudents walked around campus in t-shirts, sundresses and flip-flops (no confining dress code here, thank you very much). The front patio of the Campus Center was filled with lounging students like a beach.

Next to the Chapel, workmen hammered stakes into the ground as they erected the big white graduation tent. But it wasn’t all spring sunshine. With each step, miller moths sprung from the ground in fluttering, gray hordes.

Spring

I was in the midst of finishing up my sophomore year—my first year at FVS— and things hadn’t gone how I had wanted them to.

I wasn’t doing as well in my classes as I had expected. For instance, my English teacher didn’t think I was ready for AP English, even though it had always been my favorite and strongest subject. I had trouble adjusting to dorm life and was quite homesick. My burgeoning love life had been one rocky roller coaster ride. I loved my new friends, but two of them were returning to Germany, and I wouldn’t see them again for a long, long time. And, perhaps most importantly, my first season of varsity hockey, which was one of the biggest reasons I decided to go to FVS, hadn’t gone well.

When I left my small town in southwest Colorado for boarding school, I wanted to succeed and be recognized. That’s not what I found at first. Just ask my roommate Julio. He can attest to my drastically vacillating levels of moodiness. Or, just ask the teachers who suffered my interminable complaining during my one season of Outdoor Education.

When I left my small town in southwest Colorado for boarding school, I wanted to succeed and be recognized. That’s not what I found at first. of that year include shooting pucks by the tennis courts while blaring Linkin Park on my iPhone, slamming my fist into the pillow of my upper bunk bed, and aggressively shoving my mountain bike’s handlebars down the sandy trails on the outskirts of the prairie at intentionally reckless speeds.

I left campus for summer break in a daze.

The next year, I shut up and worked hard.

I didn’t really have a choice. That’s one of the things about FVS—you’re stuck there.

You live with people who were previously total strangers, and your new teachers also double as quasi-parents. If things aren’t going well, heck, you have to figure out a way to improve your situation. And I did.

Things improved, though slowly. I began pestering my teachers during study hours, especially Mr. Lilly who, with the help of my friend Owen, practically taught me AP Calculus twice—once during class and a second time at night. I committed even more to hockey and was made team captain. I stopped complaining as much, and I started finding my groove. After my junior year, my new English teacher strongly recommend that I switch to the AP track.

This story doesn’t have a happy ending, though. In the end, hockey didn’t work out like I hoped, and I wasn’t offered a spot on a college team. After that first year, I found some academic recognition but never as much as I sought. More than that, I still have regrets about the person I was because of the negative things I said and did to other people at FVS. I went there hoping for self-actualization but didn’t find it (and still haven’t, if you’re wondering).

Some of my struggles on that beautiful, green, prairie oasis still, to this day, make me clench my fists and slam them against my legs in frustration.

Of course, most of the pain of these struggles has faded into the periphery throughout my time away from campus.

Now, when I look back at my time at FVS, I, like many others, find myself putting a sepia tone on every Stupid Night Out,

Still, it’s important to remember these difficulties because, honestly, they have stuck with me. The few years of life I’ve experienced beyond FVS have been filled with similar impediments. From having three shoulder surgeries and quitting hockey to struggling with my new homesickness for Colorado as I left the mountains to study in the dark, grey winters of Connecticut, my struggles dogged me long after I graduated in that big white tent myself. Though FVS didn’t “prepare me” for these new, strange challenges—I don’t think anything really can—it did, at least, give me an inkling of what to do. I’d done it before.

When I got a subpar grade on my first essay in college, I immediately went to my professor’s office hours because,

well, that’s what I learned to do during study hours at FVS. When I quit hockey, I filled my time playing ultimate frisbee and club soccer because, well, I learned to

keep active after school during all three seasons. When I got in an argument with one of my roommates, I spent some time alone and then let it go because, well, I’d dealt with roommates for years—and it’s not easy.

These examples aren’t all foolproof solutions or strategies. They don’t solve all my problems or give me answers for every dilemma. But these are the kind of things that helped me immensely beyond Colorado Springs—and I’m thankful for this.

Today, I study English with a creative Writing Certificate at a top university—and I love it. I plan to make a career out of it… though I’m still figuring out how exactly to do so. And, I’m sure I’ll face more struggles and people who don’t believe in me along the way. While FVS didn’t perfectly coddle my passions or give me self-actualization, it did something far more significant: It made me grow up through the failures I encountered.

Sometime during that sophomore spring, I remember a brief experience that resonates far more than the negative moments. Now, the miller moths were really bad that year, I mean Book-of-

While FVS didn’t perfectly coddle my passions or give me self-actualization, it did something far more significant: It made me grow up through the failures I encountered.

Exodus bad. According to the rumors, it was a 10-year hatch. We tried to keep them out of Figge House, but those stupid, grey, harmless but annoying moths were insidious. Soon, they flooded the common areas. Then, they crept under the doorways and into our rooms.

That’s when, on an otherwise inconsequential day, I gathered in the lower hallway of the dorm with my roommates, our RA’s, our house parents, and our other housemates. We swatted every last moth in the bottom floor. These were moths that, mind you, would die in the next couple of weeks anyway, and it sounds cruel, I know, but these moths were everywhere—I mean everywhere.

Our collective nerves were worn thin already. And, it was all in vain, really, because more moths would seep in through the bottoms of the front door. But it didn’t matter. We cleared them out for the moment, however brief, laughing and talking loudly about nothing while we did

so. It didn’t seem harsh to end the already short, fleeting lives of these miller moths.

Instead, it felt, somehow, warm, like the Colorado sun that flowed in slanted rays through the windows of the emergency exit door and into the hallway. It was our last impromptu gathering in the home we’d shared for the past year. Like the rest of the hordes of invading moths, we would disperse in a matter of days. But, for the moment, we just basked in each other’s company.

“I feel like artists are a little bit in the dark. You don’t see them out in public like you do people who have other occupations. Unless you’re looking for them, you won’t really see them.”

Beyond the Steven Spielbergs and JK Rowlings of the world, it’s easy to forget about the artists hidden away in their studios. Talking with Evans, genre-bending Wyoming musician Ian Munsick ’11, and indie music-video director-filmmaker Mara Whitehead ’13 (and reaching out to the numerous others for the gallery on page 45), I pulled back the curtain and saw the artists behind it.

THE FVS INFLUENCE Coming into Fountain Valley, Evans, Munsick, and Whitehead all knew they were going to be artists. Munsick started playing country western music and bluegrass with his family band, the Munsick Boys, when he was just 10 years old. Evans struggled with academics because of her undiagnosed dyslexia and, “for better or for worse,” immediately took to art and ceramics. Whitehead found a sense of joy and purpose in filmmaking before even starting Fountain Valley. Still, FVS helped each, albeit in different ways.

For Munsick, choir and an independent study where he was able to create a band, practice and perform during the designated afternoon activity slot were key to learning how to blend his voice and really push him towards songwriting. Plus, his FVS friends like George Dillon ’10 led him to hip-hop, which he now fuses with country in his current style.

For Evans, former art department chair and ceramics master Mark Dillon and former art department chair and artist-in-residence Jeff Brown inspired her not only to be an artist, but also to be a teacher of art.

“Mr. Brown and Mr. Dillon are perfect examples of what you can do with an art degree,” Evans says. “You don’t have to be this freelance studio artist just trying to make it off your own work. You can have sort of the best of both worlds like health insurance and studio access.”

BEYOND THE PRAIRIE After graduating Fountain Valley, Whitehead worked on film sets throughout college. Munsick followed a year of community college with a move to Belmont University in Nashville to pursue a degree in songwriting and music business. Evans went to New York State College of Ceramics at Alfred University, an experience she found deeply valuable.

“In art school, they give you a whole new way of looking at things,” Evans says. “The

way you take in the environment is completely changed, which I know sounds a little hokey, but it is true— just compositionally and learning all the different elements that make up artwork that maybe you weren’t seeing at first glance.”

After college, Whitehead moved to Los Angeles to work for Ramble West Productions, a music video and commercial production company, where she has worked on music videos for the Infamous Stringdusters, Kid Astronaut and Thunder & Rain, among others. Her videos are intimate, filled with light and nature, and let the folksy sounds of the artists she works with be the focus.

“I found an amazing team of people who mentored and trained me,” Whitehead explains. “When the executive producer saw some of my work, he supported me in

transitioning into a more creative role within the company.”

Munsick, after touring with various musical groups, decided to go solo. He released “The Ian Munsick EP” in the winter of 2017 with songs off the album like “Horses are Faster,” a bittersweet and nostalgic twang, garnering over a million plays on Spotify.

“The Ian Munsick EP was kind of a warmup for my fans and soon to be fans,” Munsick said. “It captures the rawness of my country upbringing as well as the organic nature in the production. It also gave Nashville and the industry a good insight of where I come from.”

He also created a popular video series on Facebook titled #OneMinuteMonday, where he covers a minute of a popular song (from all genres and eras) in visually creative ways each Monday. Plus, he’s feverishly recording new music.

Evans worked as an intern in John Michael Kohler Art Center’s Arts and Industry Program before moving to DBO Home in Connecticut, a small-batch ceramic and furniture company where she works as a ceramic technician. Off-duty, she uses the studio for her own work, which often mixes ceramics with sewing crafting materials, and explores ideas of crafting or the socalled “women’s work” that both of her grandmothers did throughout their lives.

“I’ve always been interested in what do we do with this heritage of women’s work,” Evans says. “Now that it’s sort of ending, where do you place that in popular culture? What sort of stamp does it leave in the conscious memory? I’m trying to strike a balance between honoring these women and their devotion to their families and their craft, but trying not to downplay the negative situation that a lot of them were in.”

But, that doesn’t mean she overthinks it.

“There are a lot of artists who draw out what they’re going to do, that sort of thing, and I’m more flying by the seat of my pants,” Evans says. “It’s like, let’s see what we can make, and then figure out if it can be re-created better.”

THE GRIND Making art isn’t easy and often requires connections. One of Whitehead’s first film jobs was with FVS alumni Alfie Alcántara ’06.

Evans found her job at DBO Home through a friend from her time at art school.

“If there is one thing I’ve learned in my time in Nashville, it’s that you have to know the right people,” Munsick adds. “You could have the best voice in the world, but if you don’t know anyone who can get you in front of people, what good is it? What change will it make in the world? Who will it inspire?”

“Art isn’t an easy pass; It’s just as hard as anything else,” says Evans.

Munsick emphasized a hard work ethic.

“Practice,” says Munsick. “And by practice, I mean putting time into your craft, whether that be songwriting, producing, guitar playing, painting, sculpting...practice.”

Most importantly, art takes passion.

“I encourage anyone that finds purpose in their art to continue creating,” Whitehead said. “A profession in the arts may not be the easiest path to follow, but it is one that can be deeply fulfilling. Continue seeking experiences that feed your soul and flex your creativity.”

Blazing ahead, Whitehead hopes to hone in on her skills as a creative director. Evans hopes to go to grad school and, like Mr. Dillon and Mr. Brown before her, teach younger artists. As for Munsick, it’s “taking over the Billboard charts and aiming for the stars.”

Fountain Valley students write vibrant, compelling essays, many of them inspired

Why and How Do We Learn?

by Ji In Ha ’18, UCLA I’m 17 years old. I just learned to tie my shoes.

“And you’re in Cum Laude?” my best friend, Ivy, said. But my opinion remained unchanged: tying shoelaces is much harder than integrating 2cos2x3sinx-4.

Dozens of people have attempted to teach me. “Rabbit ears, Ji In,” they say. I never understood that rabbit method. Every time I tried to make two winsome rabbit ears, I ended up with an ostrich-shaped knot with one big pile of tangled laces in the middle and two or three strings sticking out.

It was this fall when I finally learned. My cast fellow Casey was frantically changing costumes, completing her oversized Russian 19th century gown. All she needed was a large bow tied behind her back. I couldn’t give that to her. As a person who abhors holding lack of responsibility, that night, after the show, I had to learn it. I went to another theater friend.

“Hey, Sophie,” I said. “You should probably teach me to tie my shoes.” We sat down and got to business and figured it out. I am proud to announce that I am now— officially—a shoe tier.

A few key things have changed in my life since I learned to tie my shoes.

First, most basically, I feel smarter. I don’t uncomfortably flare my nostrils anymore when being called a math god. Clearly, I have now mastered the math of shoelaces.

Second, I fall down less. I no longer do a dynamic Jewish dance move on the set for Fiddler on the Roof with flying shoelaces. I don’t leap like a deranged grasshopper to avoid stepping on myself on the tennis court.

Third, I save time. I no longer make six prodigious knots for each shoe or vehemently brainstorm to come up with an idiosyncratic mechanism of keeping my shoes closed.

But this is really it: I have learned to turn my humility into wisdom. When I finally perfected that superlative image of two loops and two tails on my own instep, I realized that the only way to learn is to accept that you just don’t know how to do something. It could be as simple as tying your shoelaces or as complex as analyzing a poet’s juxtaposed imagery. This is how I gain confidence by laughing at myself on the stage as I make the audience laugh along with me. That humility. That

openness. That active engagement. That’s the first step of learning.

When I first came to America, I accepted that I wasn’t ready for mainstream literature classes and started with ESL English. I lucidly remember sitting in South Perry’s common room at 2 a.m. by myself as a freshman, reading the sentence from A Step from Heaven over and over until I understood the plot. Now I sit down in the same common room as an RA— still late at night because of five APs— but reading As I Lay Dying as I explore what it means to be dead along with the analysis of specific literary devices. I’m the sole former ESL student in my AP Literature class, perpetually pushing myself to contribute whatever I’ve got in my mind. I am in a classroom to learn, not to be correct, and I will always be a learner. So I embrace what I don’t know and dive in.

My humility depends on me. I know that I am the person who decides to embrace what I don’t know and convert it into the seed from which wisdom can grow.

Humility does not have to be the voice of “I can’t.” Humility can be an opportunity.

An opportunity leads to ability. I am what I learn. That’s why accepting my drawbacks is so important. It’s the first step to education, and education is what shapes my life. I am what I learn.

BOUND To Whom It May Concern:

by Clara Barnstone ’18, Barnard College Having suffered the misfortune of knowing Clara Barnstone as long as I have, it is with the utmost urgency that I must advise you: do not under any circumstances admit her to your school. My beloved institution made the same mistake four years ago and is just beginning to realize its catastrophic lapse of judgment.

Unrelatedly, I am required to disclose that I have been “relieved of my professional responsibilities” at Foothills Valley School.

The murky circumstances resulting in my recent termination will be cleared up soon; but unfortunately, Clara’s impact will linger for some time. Consider this: construction is imminent on a music production studio she and her feeble-minded classmate designed and acquired (or rather, swindled) the funding for. The studio will assuredly incite future generations of FVS students to offend the public with their distasteful recordings. And this is not isolated misbehavior! The duo has already soiled the campus with a “community garden;” and now our cafeteria serves squash and pumpkin soup of the most dubious origin.

Which brings to mind a particular “quality” Clara is guilty of: what my benighted colleagues call her “leadership skills,” but can more accurately be described as instigation. It is no small threat: hosting workshops on latkes and lox, pushing climate change petitions, and organizing talent shows in Spanish. Why the school would enable—even encourage—this level of subversion by awarding her not one, but two president positions, in the Student Cultural Organization and the Hispanic Honors Society, is beyond me. Why give her access to an even greater platform to corrupt minority youth? But what really made me question the values of FVS’s current administration was when they sent her—to Argentina—on exchange last summer, representing Foothills Valley.

Quite embarrassing, although had she remained, I for one would have danced the Macarena.

Life in the dorms has substantially worsened since Clara arrived. Rarely does one pass her room without being subjected to so-called “music” of Charlie Parker, or Eydie Gorme y Los Panchos, or the soundtrack from Emmet Otter’s Jugband Christmas. Her favorite Austin indie bands are now being played in the rooms of so many of her peers that it is difficult to know whether it is a product of Ms. Barnstone’s infectious influence or of sheer mockery.

Clara’s personal tastes are simply regrettable. What can one say about a girl who lines her walls with old Vogue

covers of Frida Kahlo, concert posters of Dylan, and inspirational quotes by Mookie Wilson? Or someone who sips juice boxes and draws in Andy Warhol coloring books? Or someone who has a troubled obsession with Wes Anderson and Rufino Tamayo and David Mamet? I can tell you this from years of experience: shameless individualism is a one-way ticket to sedition.

As an administrator, I took great pains to maintain the sanctity of the classroom.

But Clara excels at controversy. Case in point: sophomore year she had the chutzpah to challenge the title of “British and Global Literature” (now renamed, coincidentally) because the course— a survey of European novelists and English playwrights—omitted a large but insignificant part of the world. But do authors who couldn’t be troubled to use our own alphabet deserve to be studied?

Since when was Shakespeare’s theater not global? Why is it so hard to understand that school is no place for debate?

So don’t be fooled by the transcript; I have it on good authority she earned those A’s out of spite. That she gets placed on the Dean’s List, while my “services are no longer needed,” tells you everything you need to know about the dean.

In sum, be safe. Do not accept Clara Barnstone. If you do, I guarantee this: your campus will never be the same.

All-School Awards Life Trustee Jim Scott ’68, P ’95, ’99, ’05 was honored with the Distinguished Alumni Award presented “in recognition of extraordinary achievements exemplifying the principles and values of the School in a profession, career or vocation, and for direct service to the local, national or international community.” He has led a life of stewardship as a community banker, rancher and philanthropist. Scott’s passions for community building, land conservation and Native American education have intersected with his love of Fountain Valley. Among his many contributions to the School, he crystallized a compelling case for endowment growth as the key to the School’s financial sustainability; he funded an ecological field study of Fountain Valley’s 1,100 acres which has been used to develop a land-management plan; and the Scott family established a scholarship fund directed to Native American students in Montana and Wyoming. Scott has served on the board since 2003. He was president from 2006 to 2010 and was named a Life Trustee in 2013 in recognition of all that he has done for Fountain Valley. Scott currently chairs the finance committee.

The 2018 Elizabeth Froelicher Smith Distinguished Service Award was presented to former trustee Katrina Presti P ’13, ’15, given for exceptionally meritorious service to the School. Presti served two terms as trustee and made her mark serving as vice president and chairing several committees. She had a gift for bringing trustees with differing viewpoints to common ground and for identifying new members to bring on the board.

Kerrigan Bennett ’83 was honored with the Distinguished Casa Serena Society Member Award recognizing dedicated and significant leadership giving to the School. Bennett gave his first gift to the Annual Fund in 1982, a year before he graduated. He has been a longtime supporter of the School and a member of the Casa Serena Society for 16 years.

Jeff Bain ’67 was honored with the 2018 Lewis Perry Jr. Alumni Award presented for conspicuous leadership in supporting the School in the preceding year. He had the idea to underwrite the costs of Alumni Weekend 2017 in order to spark greater attendance and philanthropic interest in Fountain Valley, and to nurture a pay-it-forward mindset amongst our alumni. And it worked! Alumni donated $40,000 under the tent at the dinner, and the Class of 1968 followed suit underwriting Alumni Weekend 2018.

AWARDS Highest Honors Froelicher Award

The School’s highest honor, the Froelicher Award, went to JT Winston, a boarding student from Montrose, Colo. He earned membership in the Froelicher Society his freshman year and was on the Dean’s List each semester, all four years. As a Global Scholar he completed two capstone projects. Winston is appreciated by the FVS community for his natural kindness, poise, graciousness and generosity.

The Eleanor W. Emery Award is given to the student whose contributions to the FVS community reflect the qualities Mrs. Emery admired most: educational commitment, integrity, sensitivity to the needs of others, warmth, good humor and enthusiasm.

This year’s recipient is boarding student Julia Strickler from Ridgway, Colo. Her infectious enthusiasm and cheer, coupled with her integrity and honor, had a major impact on her class and the School.

Sidney S. Bunting Award

Colgate Award

Dang Quang Nhat from Vietnam won the Sidney S. Bunting Award. This honor is given to a student in recognition of those qualities Mr. Bunting most admired: scholarship, intellect and culture. An accomplished student, Dang went above and beyond to make sure that those around him were given the opportunity to experience success, regularly helping fellow students outside the classroom.

The Colgate Award honors excellence in sportsmanship, loyalty and character. The rich tradition and history of the theater program live on with three vibrant productions a year. Energetic and engaging Theater Director Hollie Marine knows how to coax out the stage presence of student actors to deliver winning and memorable moments on stage. SPORTSWRAP WINTER Boys Basketball Boys basketball had a winter chock-full of highs and lows, ultimately ending their season with a 6-11 record. Though they suffered some hard losses, they achieved a number of glorious wins, as well, often doubling the score of their opponents. Jackson Blaylock ’20 led the pack with the most points scored for this season, with seniors Galen Kelly ’18 and Jack Knuettel ’18 right behind him providing points scored, assists and rebounds. This group played their hearts out in every game and displayed tremendous teamwork and passion, filling gyms with excitement through every tick of the clock.

Girls Basketball In their second varsity season since returning to the 2A level, the 2017-18 Danes finished their season with a 6-11 record.

Sophomore Tilly Rahm ’20 led all scorers, with 229 points on the year with 49 rebounds and 57 steals. Older sister, Ava Rahm ’18, had a breakout year leading the Black Forest League in blocks with 80, pulling down 133 rebounds and earning her way to BFL Honorable Mention. Senior CoCaptain, Kendall Weiskopf ’18 also earned BFL Honorable Mention honors by scoring 91 points and pulling down 129 rebounds for the Danes.

The FVS climbing program has proven year after year to be a dominant force within the league, and this year is no exception as Fountain Valley School is now the reigning Colorado High School Climbing League State champions for varsity boys and girls. JV boys also skyrocketed to the top spot at the state competition, with Girls JV placing an impressive second. Proving he can hang with the best in the state, sophomore Savian CzerneyJohnson ’20 was the top scorer at states for boys varsity, placing sixth overall with senior Ian Edison ’18 not far behind landing in 10th place. Fountain Valley was the only school to have more than one student in the boys varsity top ten. Junior Ingrid Ellis ’19 was the top varsity girl at the competition placing 16th, with four more climbers right on her heels. It’s important to note that this girls varsity team has etched their names into FVS history becoming the very first girls state championship in any sport since the School became co-ed in 1975.

This hockey year was successful by several measures. The team earned a final record for the year of 27 wins, 21 losses and two ties in the most competitive schedule the program has seen to date. The Danes had great success in a number of tournaments; as semifinalists in one, finalists in three, and champions in two.

This group demonstrated their talent and intensity time and again throughout the year, winning a number of games against 18 AAA teams. Although the program lost 11 seniors coming into the next year, the upcoming team is ripe with eager and talented young players that are ready to fill important roles and bring some FVS victories.

With the help of the FVS Wind Ensemble, the winter dance season culminated in a dazzling final concert, “A Night In Hollywood,” showcasing dances and musical arrangements from the stage and screen. Dancers provided audience members a taste of ballet, hip-hop, Hawaiian, traditional Chinese, and much more. Clad in themed costumes and bathed in dramatic lighting, these girls mesmerized their audience.

Girls Swimming and Diving The competition was fierce this season, with FVS proving once again that they are a powerhouse within the league. Coach Rob Gustke continues to inspire and drive these girls to improve upon themselves with every meet.

This year, 10 girls qualified to represent Fountain Valley in the 3A states competition against 26 other schools. Considering the high level of talent and competition this year, qualifying for this this event is an accomplishment in itself. The highest individual placing was from sophomore diver Harriet Townsend ’20 who showed poise and precision, and earned a fantastic sixth place finish. The 200m medley relay (Skye McCurdy ’18, Meghan Guy ’18, Eliza Rhee ’19 and Charlotte Kline ’20) advanced to the finals with a time of 2:02.46, breaking the current FVS record in this event and earning them 16th place in 3A States.

Crippled by player illness and never-ceasing gusty winds on our home courts, it was a tough season for the Danes. Though unable to pull out a dual meet win, FVS sent two qualifying players to the 3A Girls Varsity State Championship: No. 2 singles veteran Delaney Demott ’18 and No. 3 singles newcomer Isabella Fernandez ’21, with Ivy Zhang ’18 acting as alternate.

Both Demott and Fernandez crushed returns and played consistent tennis throughout their rounds. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough to subdue their opponents, resulting in a first-round loss for both players. Demott received the coaches award this year, with Zhang taking the MVP award.

The Danes volleyball team ended the season with 10 wins and 6 losses, finishing 3rd in the 3A South League. Led by seniors Galen Kelly ’18, Will Edelson ’18, Jose Nardiz ’18 and Vinay Merchant ’18, the Danes posted a strong front line with powerful hitters. Vinay led the Danes with 67 kills and a hitting percentage of .57 percent. Unfortunately, the Danes were eliminated from advancing to the postseason by a tie-breaker following the last game of the regular season.

With the guidance of first-year head coach Curtis Singmaster, the boys varsity lacrosse team landed their best season in over 15 years with a record of 7-3. FVS placed third in the league and finished the season on a five-game winning streak.

They boasted the strongest defense in the league and followed it up with a young group of exciting offensive players, four of whom were invited to the Mile-High Colorado Lacrosse Showcase this summer. The Danes owned one of the top face-off specialists in the league along with a young goalie claiming the second-best goals against average in the league. This was a condensed spring season which pressured the boys to gel quickly, learn new systems and prepare themselves mentally and physically within a short window of time. First Team All-Conference honors went to Will Haynes ’18, Zach Finke ’18 and Zane Reynolds ’18 with Jackson Blaylock ’20, Duncan McLellan ’20, Soren Bredeson ’18 and Austin Hamilton ’21 taking Second Team All-Conference.

After last year’s stellar season finish, the FVS girls soccer program, along with firstyear head coach Kevin Ray, opted for a repeat. In their best season to date, the Danes capped it off with a 13-4 record, experiencing the sweet taste of victory through the entire season. From the get-go, they started off with a bang, crushing both opponents 10-0 in the first two games of the season. Team captain and lead scorer Ani Love ’18 soared through the fields and guided her crew through regionals and into the 2A State Semifinals against Denver Christian. In the end, the Thunder managed to squeeze out one point more than the Danes, ending the game 3-2. Love was awarded First Team All-State, and Harriet Townsend ’20 and Tilly Rahm ’20 both received All-State honorable mention.

Fountain Valley’s IEA Team sent three riders to Zone 8 Finals to represent the the school: Konami Ogino ’20, Mia Parsons ’21 and Brooke Dashiell ’19. With the end of IEA season, riders looked forward to participating in the CHJA circuit and hosted a schooling show in preparation. FVS riders pushed themselves to higher heights and offered friendly competition among their teammates.

The whole team deserves props for ring-crewing and supporting each other throughout the entire day. Several riders attended a CHJA show in Elizabeth, Colo. Standouts include Lizzie Haghigi ’20 who won champion in the CHJA Equitation Division, Faith Young ’19 winning the CHJA Medal and Ellie Zadow ’18 who took Reserve Champion in the Columbine Medal. Throughout the winter and spring, FVS riders brought home a plethora of blue ribbons to adorn their dorm rooms.

Lew Watters ’57: “Bonnie and I celebrated our 50th wedding anniversary on June 22, 2018, in our historic Stone Village. My wife, Bonnie, is also celebrating 50 years of doll artistry this year. When I met her in NYC, she was making Raggedy Ann and Andy stuffed dolls along with a classic Teddy Bear. Now, over 14,000 creations later in hundreds of original designs, she is planning a museum venue. She and I have walked this joyful journey together in mail order, craft shows, open studio, licensing patterns, and connecting with thousands of life-long customers young and old. Her latest commission is a portrait/character doll of a Supreme Court justice!”

60s PHIL BURLING ’60 sent in an entry from the small-world department: “Hilary and I just returned from a trip to Greenland and Iceland. Among the other participants were PETE and LINDSEY LEAVELL P ’88, ’98 and Pete’s sister Mary Lee Pinkerton. It turned out that Pete joined the FVS board of trustees just after I left, so we had many friends in common.”

NICK BRADLEY ’61 authored the book “Rickie Trujillo,” the story of a MexicanAmerican teen boy in Los Angeles who is trying to grow up while navigating absentee parents, gang violence, racial discrimination and adolescent anger. The Amazon reviews are excellent. Bradley worked as an English and ESL teacher in junior high and high schools in Los Angeles throughout his 30-year career.

The schools where he taught were in the center of neighborhoods of poverty and crime, gangs, drugs and graffiti, which gave him material for the setting of this novel. Many of the students he taught and tutored during his career were, like Rickie, active gang members.

CHUCK BULLOCK ’61 reports: “Cathy and I retired in 2000, sold our mountain ranch, built a home on the escarpment overlooking the Rio Grande, the city of Albuquerque and the Sandia Mountains.

We were recently in Costa Rica where our granddaughter studied Bradypus sloths.

In retirement, we have volunteered with Habitat for Humanity, literacy programs and our local food bank.

ED LORSON ’61 is currently in his condo in Durango, Colo., and has recently traveled to White Sands in New Mexico, Carlsbad Caverns, Antelope Canyon, Arches National Park and Canyonlands.

He and his wife, Ann, celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary.

Turney McKnight ’61 is still very much involved with horses. He has retired from law and enjoys his four beautiful granddaughters.

BILL NORMAN ’61’s news: “I am trying jury cases full time but during a break, my wife Katherine and I went to Hawaii for what we thought would be a respite.

But one morning we were awoken by a text saying that a ballistic missile attack was imminent, ‘no drill, find shelter immediately’ and for a while had the experience of thinking, ‘Well, this is how it all ends...’ All of you read about it later, of course, but to actually live that experience is quite something. Anyway, we like others, were texting to our (pretty well adjusted, it seems so far) kids in their 30s that we were so sorry for sending them to their rooms some 20 years ago, while others around us were frantically asking ‘What does shelter from a nuclear attack look like, exactly?’”

CORMAC O’MALLEY ’61: “I’ve been pumping out 11 books in the last 11 years on modern Irish history focused on my father’s role in Ireland’s 1916-1921 revolution and war against England, and his cultural role in later years in the arts.

My time has been devoted to sorting 150 years of family archives, lectures and keeping in touch with modern Ireland.”

TOM POOR ’61: “My name ‘Poor’ is an apt one these days as Jessie and I have both daughters in college. We are fortunate that each was a highly ranked squash player in the juniors, hence recruited by their current university.

Samantha’s a junior at Princeton majoring in the Woodrow Wilson School; Madeleine’s a freshman at Harvard and will declare a major next year. Jessie continues as a radiologist at the Brigham & Women’s Hospital while I serve on a few boards. Together, we play some squash and tennis, and enjoy vacations with our daughters in warm places during the New England winters.”

DAVID STREET ’61 moved to Tampa, Fla., in October 2017. He sold his house in Colorado Springs, but maintains a place in Keystone, Colo.

HAL TEARSE ’61 says he is living the good life, working, traveling around the world and coaching hockey.

RUDY DAVISON ’65 has had a busy year: “One main achievement was being executive producer of a Rocky Mountain PBS Colorado Experience series called ‘Uranium Mania,’ a story about how the radioactive minerals vanadium and uranium created the town of Uravan in western Montrose County and affected growth in Grand Junction. Interestingly, the ores mined in this area found their way to Madame Curie in the form of radium.”

Davison was also commentator for “Hydro Power” that aired in 2014-15, the story of the Ames Power Plant outside of Telluride being the first in the world to send AC electricity a long distance (three miles). He also submitted “Ladies of the Mines” that won the Viewers’ Choice Contest, which told the stories of three women who gave descriptions of what it was like to live in a typical Colorado mining camp during the late 1880s-early 1900s. “I must give some

of the credit that allowed me to participate in this history series to the excellent educational foundation I received when I attended Fountain Valley so many years ago. Keep up the good work.”

FVS Athletic Hall of Famer BRENT ABEL ’67 has been on a winning streak.

He won the National 70s Indoor Doubles in Houston in March and the National 70s Hardcourt Singles in Irvine in June. He’s been selected to represent the USA on the four-player Super Senior World Cup team that competes in September in Umag, Croatia.

WILLIAM KELLOUGH ’68 reports that he married his wife, Beverly, last year and no longer works as a district judge in Tulsa, but still practices at a private law firm.

70s From SAM BISSELL ’70: “In January, I met with a near-death situation when I spent two weeks in Lutheran Hospital in Wheat Ridge, Colo., due to severe respiratory failure with hypoxemia and complications due to pneumonia. I was in ICU for two full weeks connected to various tubes for nourishment, and had a constant vigil by my son who played music for me, and my ex-wife, who read to me nightly. When I woke up, my legs and arms had atrophied, so I embarked on three weeks in a rehab center plus another six weeks of in-home service to relearn how to walk, use a fork and knife, and raise my arms, again. Since “My Return,” my knees have failed and I am hoping cortisone will save the day. It has been one helluva way to start 2018 but I am hoping the road forward will be much less bumpy!!

I am certainly thankful that the love of all my family, friends, and my Higher Spirit brought me back to life. See you all at our 50th Reunion Class of ’70 in 2020.

It’s been a long time since I supplied an update... but I am certainly glad that I lived to make this one!”

Buck Walsky ’72 had an interactive art installation, “Beachfront,” at the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center at Colorado College.

Composed of bicycle wheels, steel and LED lights, this massive installation responds to air movement, giving the viewer the sensation of perhaps being underwater surrounded by electric blue jellyfish. It was originally created for the Burning Man Festival. Walsky lives in Anchorage, Alaska.

JOHN WARRINGTON ’75 shares this news: “I’ve been working and living in Nicaragua since 2005. Currently, I’m developing a cocoa farm in the Atlantic coast region, which has gone fairly well until April 19, when the revolution started.

There have been tremendous marches calling for the dictator Daniel Ortega and his wife, Rosario Murillo, to leave power.

They responded violently and have not stopped. Current death toll is over 300, mostly young kids and students, deliberately shot in the head and chest.

Today, the second-month anniversary, has been the most brutal by far with hundreds of anti-riot police laying siege to the town of Masaya to wrest back control from the people. The citizenry was optimistic a week ago, but with the renewed attacks over the last few days, it looks as if the government may prevail. Stay tuned.”

MARY CROUTER ’79 writes: “Our daughter Leah is headed to law school after four years teaching algebra at a charter school in the South Bronx. Our son Nathan graduates from Stanford in June and plans to work in Austin for a year or so before going to graduate school in American studies.”

David Gould ’83 is the new head of school at Bethany School in Cincinnati, Ohio, and says, “I would not be in the world of education were it not for my incredible three years at FVS. The influence of [former faculty] Peter Thorp, Eric Waples, Chris and Sue Lowell, Hunter Frost, Brad Boyden and many others had such a powerful and positive influence on me. Thank you for such great memories, FVS!” Gould and his wife, Beth, at Bethany School’s graduation last May.

DIONNE (KING) GREIF ’88 reports: “2018 has been be a big year for the Greif family. We broke ground on a new house on Tuttle Creek Lake here in Manhattan, Kansas, last September and moved in May 11. We took a quick break from moving in to attend reunion weekend and had a great time! We celebrated Wade’s 50th birthday along with a housewarming party in June. We’re expecting our second grandchild in July and our younger daughter is getting married in November. Wade and I will celebrate our 30-year wedding anniversary in October. New house, new grand baby and new son-in-law in one year—who could ask for more?”

Brooke Ambler ’90 sent in this small-world meetup: “The strangest thing happened today. I was interviewing potential student ambassadors at the University of Adelaide [Australia] where I work, and during the interview, I looked at Lily Harris ’15’s resume and saw Fountain Valley School listed. I have never met any FVS alumni outside of the US. Crazy! Of course we have been bonding over the similarities we shared as students, and of some of our teachers (Mr. Brown, Mr. Dillon). I have many, many fond memories of FVS.” Ambler works at the University of Adelaide recruiting domestic, regional and interstate students. Prior to that, she ran her own business sponsoring V8 supercar drivers and MMA fighters. Her children are now 20, 14 and 12.

In Fall 2017, JILLIAN PORTER ’98 joined the faculty at the University of Colorado Boulder, where she is assistant professor of Russian in the Department of Germanic and Slavic Languages and Literatures. She is currently living in Golden with her wife, Hannah, and their toddling son, Leo. She is thrilled to be back home in Colorado.

00s JES MEIRIS ’00 attended Alumni Weekend and sends news: “I enjoyed seeing graduates, students, faculty and friends at graduation and the Alumni Art Show where I submitted some stained glass pieces. The last couple years have been transitional for me as I start to move away from the outdoor industry, primarily rock climbing and mountain guiding, where I’ve worked for the last

14 years. About half of those years included the pleasure of being involved with the successful FVS climbing team along with Dr. ROB GILBERT and Mme. STEPHANIE KIMLICKO. I’m now working toward returning to school in late 2018 or 2019 to become a helicopter pilot, with the dream of flying for search and rescue while continuing to guide rock climbing part time.”

CHRISTINE GERMAN ’01 married Matthew Mattson in Richmond, Virg., where they call home. She is running her own international development consulting practice and will start her Ph.D. program in political science at George Mason University in the fall.

SEUNGHAN DEREK SONG ’03 sends news: “After graduating from both undergrad and grad school in Boston, I’ve fallen in love with this city and decided to stay. My fiancé and I got engaged last year, and we’re getting married this December in Key West. I’ve been working as an associate dentist in Boston for six years now and am planning on opening my own practice next month so I’m very excited, well both nervous and excited, I should say!”

J.P. Medved ’05 has had quite a year: “My 2017 has been very eventful: I got engaged in July to a wonderful girl whom I met when Charlie Strode ’05 and I needed a roommate in 2011 and put an ad on Craigslist. Then just this last November my first novel, “Justice, Inc.,” was published and has been getting some nice reviews (one of the beta readers for an early draft of the manuscript was Hans Schweitzer ’05). The novel is a techno-thriller about a private military corporation, and Mr. Reynolds and Mrs. Griffith will be pleased to hear my copy editor found only a couple grammatical mistakes. Though, Mr. Reynolds, I still maintain that grammar is really more just guidelines than actual rules.”

CAROL SIMONSON ’05 is coming up on her nine-year anniversary in El Salvador.

“I came down for Peace Corps right after graduating from Skidmore College in ’09.

After my two years in Peace Corps, I decided to stick around and try my luck in international development. I currently work as the environmental compliance specialist for a USAID-funded project called Bridges to Employment. My husband and I enjoy spending time with our two dogs, supporting the nascent craft beer scene here in Central America, and climbing volcanoes (we check to make sure they aren’t actively erupting, first!). If anyone is planning a trip down to El Salvador, we would be happy to point you in the direction of fun things to see and do.”

I then got a teaching job covering for a maternity leave at Burr and Burton Academy in Manchester, Vt. I am currently renting an apartment from [former advancement director] Judi McPhail! I will work for BBA full time next fall and begin a master’s program at the Middlebury Bread Loaf School of English.”

Former trustee Sara Howsam P ’06, ’09 and Tess Howsam ’06, pictured, organized and participated in an art show at the Center for the Arts in Queretaro, Mexico. The show was named “Puentes - No Muros” or “Bridges - Not Walls.” There were six women artists, three from the U.S. and three from Mexico, including Alejandra Alcantara P ’06, ’08. Each artist worked in a different medium but all addressed issues of connectivity. Tess did an installation piece called “Corseted Community” inspired by Frida Kahlo which addresses women issues of support vs. restriction. Women artists made plaster casts of their torsos which were collaged and painted as shown here.

HENRY MERRIAM ’10 is running the software architecture team at an emergency mass-communication company in Boston. “I’m also making alcohol infusions for my home bar and throwing cocktail and board game parties,” he says. “I traveled to Scotland, Korea and Singapore earlier this year, and I’m planning a trip to Iceland. I’m still running every now and then.”

Kiira Walsh ’14 writes: “This June, I graduated from the University of Denver alongside my brother, Bryce ’14, with a degree in journalism. I just completed an internship at Colorado Ski Country USA as a contributing writer, where I got to flex my knowledge on all things skiing. I have since moved to Aspen for the summer to intern with the PR and marketing department at The Little Nell. I’ve recently picked up the hobby of road biking. Raleigh Burrell ’14 and I are still best friends.”

Mike Maloof ’10 shares yet another FVS small-world encounter. “I am living in New York City working at a data analytics startup. I routinely meet FVS friends around town whether they live here or are just passing through. The other day, I was walking down the street with my laundry and heard a voice from behind me say, ‘Is that you, Michael?’ It was fellow FVS alum Kim Donaldson ’12 in town for work. So great running into an old friend!”

SAM BERMINGHAM ’16 is majoring in economics at Colorado College and is a starter for the men’s soccer team.

SIERRA CALDWELL ’16 is happy at Cornell College, and because of two summers of classes, she is already a junior.

She has declared chemistry as a major.

Tristan White ’14 sends news: “I’m writing from a little beach town called Montañita, Ecuador, where I’ve been relearning Spanish. My senior thesis on the Cambrian (~500 million-year-old) rocks of Thailand and Myanmar burned me out, so I’ve spent weeks this summer touring Bolivia, Peru and Ecuador post-grad from Colorado College. In the fall, I’ll be leaving the Springs (and Colorado for that matter) for a job as a geochemistry lab research associate in the Department of Geology and Geophysics at Yale University. I’d love to give a shoutout to Mr. Gustke for the head start he gave me on understanding the local Colorado Springs geology through his elective class. I can’t wait to return for my class’s five-year reunion next year!”

Benny Cole ’15 writes in: “I took half a gap year to teach at Colegio Anglo Colombiano through Round Square, fall of 2015, and started Western Washington University winter quarter of the 2015-2016 school year. I’m pursuing two degrees, one in Spanish and the other in political science. I have played on Western’s men’s club lacrosse team which competes in the MCLA DII in the PNCLL Conference. Since the beginning of my junior year, I have been the team president and captain. I broke the school’s single season goals and points records with 47 goals and 81 points. I was also selected to the First Team All Conference, was named Offensive Player of the Year by the coaches in the conference, and received Honorable Mention All-American recognition.

Stephanie Kimlicko met Olivia Rask ’16 for coffee and says: “Olivia was my student every year of her four years at FVS and my advisee for three of them, so it was wonderful to see her again and catch up. Olivia took a gap year after graduating from FVS to travel through Asia and do research in marine biology in the Dominican Republic. She is a sophomore at Colorado College.”

KEITA KADOKURA ’17’s mom sent news of him: “Keita is doing well at University of California San Diego. He had ACL surgery in July from his ski accident in winter but he recovered very well, and he is enjoying his college life.”

Former Faculty Former faculty JOHN ORA sends an update: “After a decade as head of Woodland School in California and then an attempt at early retirement in Portland, Ore., I am taking a two-year interim head position at The Long Ridge School in Connecticut. My plan is to enjoy getting to know the school and the area, then move on to a series of one-to-two year interim head positions in a variety of U.S. cities and international schools. With friends and family in the Pacific Northwest, Portland will be my home base.”

Former faculty/ former trustee John Raushenbush P ’80 has published his second children’s book which came out in August. It is the sequel to Mike Mulligan and the Secret of the Magic Berries, which was published in 2017.

There were a couple of other notable Fountain Valley hands in the book: Art Davidson ’62 wrote the preface to both books and former faculty/former trustee Rocky Kimball ’67 wrote the back cover paragraph.

“Barlow”

October 3, 1947 – February 7, 2018

A TRIBUTE FROM FOUNTAIN VALLEY SCHOOL CLASS OF 1965 Before Algae Systems, The Right to Know, the Electronic Freedom Foundation, The Declaration of Cyberspace, The Economy of Ideas, Needle Park, John Kennedy Jr., Timothy Leary, Wesleyan University, Mexicali Blues, LSD, crazy cross-country road trips, and “John Perry,” there was just Barlow.

That’s what we called him at Fountain Valley School when most of us arrived in the fall of 1961. He came from a ranch up in Wyoming and because of that, already knew more about life and death than those of us from the cities.

We all survived that first year in the third form and returned in the fall of 1962, another Yearbook photo chance to “build character.” That’s when Barlow and Weir met. After a brief initial session of roommate swaps, they had their own room in Sage Hall, the large, adobe-style dormitory, housing the third and fourth form.

Some so-called historians of the Grateful Dead, who were never there, have tried to write about this early stage of the partnership.

They really don’t know. What we know is that they were a natural fit. Each fed off the other. They became best friends from the very beginning. In that one short year, from September of 1962 to June 1963, they formed a bond that would grow and intensify and last for 56 years. Bobby would stay for one year and not return. And he was never “kicked out,” as has been written in some accounts.

We were all trying to find ourselves during this time. Between mild upper-class harassment, weekly classes and sports, this was our life.

John’s approach to it all was typically Barlow: sardonic and sarcastic.

He already knew the score. From that second year, he began to grow and develop. He really shined on stage with numerous performances in plays and productions. He was a member of the Glee Club, and especially appreciated Mr. Ernest Kitson, the Harvard-trained instructor who had been there since 1930, at the very beginning of the School.

In 1965, by the time he graduated, he was near the top of our class and headed east to Wesleyan. After college, he returned to his father’s ranch and the cow lands of Wyoming. In the early 70s, he reunited with his old roommate, Weir, to collaborate on a number of now classic Grateful Dead tunes.

At the end of the 1980s, when this new technology called the “world wide web” appeared, he joined literally, attaching a suction-cup on his telephone for his pickup. Before long though, he began to fully understand this new medium, this new “frontier”, as the ultimate way to connect everyone around the world. He understood its unfettered capabilities, as well as the threats, and grew to fearlessly and passionately defend the freedom of expression for all. In fact, decades before anyone, he wrote about expanding freedoms using this new technology. He also predicted the threats from the “jackboots.”

His lectures on YouTube, his essays, and his theories form the basis of collegiate courses and remain the template of understanding the essential, philosophical core at the beginning of the internet. It’s especially appropriate that he is this year’s recipient of an award from the Arts Guild, for John Barlow fearlessly supported that basic creative impulse in all artists, which is free expression without restraint. His medium just happened to be the internet.

Many of our classmates remember him from so long ago, when we were fresh-faced and filled with ambition and hope. That was Barlow.

And he still is. So from the Fountain Valley School Class of 1965, we offer our tribute to the real deal, a modern renaissance cowboy.

In Memoriam MACAULEY “MAC” WHITING ’42 died peacefully after a long illness on Sept. 4, 2017. After graduating from Cranbrook School in Birmingham, Michigan, he attended Fountain Valley School for a postgraduate year before attending Yale University, where he earned a bachelor’s of science in mechanical engineering and a master’s of science in mechanical engineering. He was an avid traveler, visiting 94 countries and all 50 states with his wife, Helen, whom he married in 1945. His life was filled with charity work and community involvement, donating his and Helen’s home and grounds in Midland to the local community, which is now part of the Dow Gardens and known as the Whiting Forest. He was also the co-founder of the Macauley and Helen Dow Whiting Foundation in 1957, as well as one of the founders of the Wood River Land Trust. He is survived by his six children, Susan Scholl, Martha Fiorito, Helen Collette, Mary Whiting, Henry Whiting and Macaulay Whiting, along with eight grandchildren, three greatgrandchildren and two brothers.

GERALD “JERRY” WEBB BENNETT ’45 passed away on Jan. 29, 2018, surrounded by his loved ones. After graduating Fountain Valley in 1945, he enlisted in the Navy for the remaining days of World War II, then attended Colorado College where he played hockey and tennis. He graduated from Yale University in 1949 with an international relations degree, then earned his law degree from the University of Colorado. Returning to

his hometown of Colorado Springs, he practiced in a firm until 1978 when he moved to a private practice until his retirement in 2009. In addition to law and politics, Bennett was also an avid sportsman enjoying tennis, golf, fly fishing and skiing, oftentimes with his children. He is survived by his wife, Edwina Fawsett Bennett; children Kate, Jeb, Molly Mohseni, Jodie and Gena; and several grandchildren and great-grandchildren. His son, Fred Bennett ’76, passed away in February 2018, one month after him.

BRUCE EATON DINES SR.’45, passed away earlier this year at 90 years old. An outdoor enthusiast, artist and collector, he remained connected to Fountain Valley School. After serving in the Air Force during World War II, he returned to Denver where he earned a bachelor’s of fine arts in commercial art and design from the University of Denver. His love of the outdoors defined his artwork, and he painted landscapes in watercolor after he retired from his career as a banking official in 1979. He is survived by his wife of 67 years, Dorothy, brother David Dines ’44, his son Bruce E. Dines Jr. and daughter, Katherine Dines.

GLENN GIBSON “GIB” GARDNER ’48 passed away on Oct. 2, 2017 at 87. Born in Bronxville, N.Y., he moved to Colorado and attended Fountain Valley School. He studied economics at Amherst College and went on to have a long and distinguished career in public relations.

Gardner also carried a love of music and art with him throughout his lifetime. He stayed close to Fountain Valley for all the years after he graduated, serving as a trustee for several years. He is survived by his wife, Mary; daughter, Elizabeth; and two sons, Peter and Robert.

ROBERT “BOB” A. JOHNSTON, JR. ’48 passed away at 87 on May 31, 2017. He came to Fountain Valley School from Houston, Texas. He excelled in both football and hiking the mountains, saying that his life would never have been so full and rewarding had he not had this opportunity.

He attended Princeton University and Baylor Medical School before earning his M.D. from Johns Hopkins Medical School in 1956. After returning home to Houston in 1968, he, along with eight other physicians, founded the Medical Clinic of Houston where he remained until his retirement in 2000. He remained a supporter of Fountain Valley well after his graduation. He is survived by his wife of 38 years, Nancy Burford Johnston;

the mother of his children, Carol Smith Johnston; son Tomas Marion Johnston and daughter Sallie Johnston; step-children Samuel Timothy Needham, Jennifer Lynn Needham, Amy Lee Walker (Brooks) ’83, and many grandchildren and step-grandchildren.

TERENCE “TERRY” LILLY ’51 died on April 29, 2018, in Cincinnati, Ohio. He was 84. A native of Colorado Springs, he attended Harvard University and Harvard Law School, graduating with with an M.B.A. before moving to Cincinnati, Ohio. During his life, he was a friend of the arts, serving and supporting many organizations in both the Colorado Springs and the Cincinnati communities, as well as Fountain Valley School. He is survived by his wife, Elizabeth Lilly; his children, Anne Lilly Cone (Philip) and John Lilly (Vanessa); four grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

CLEVELAND “CLEVE” MCCARTY ’51, 85, passed away on July 3, 2018. He attended Fountain Valley before graduating from Choate School, after which he moved back to his native Colorado and graduated from the University of Colorado with a degree in marketing. In 1961, he received his doctor of medicine in dentistry degree from Washington University in St. Louis, where he met his wife, Jacquelyn Wedler, whom he wed in 1963. An avid climber and athlete, in 1959 he was one of the first to climb all 54 of Colorado’s 14ers in 54 days. He also co-authored the first Boulder-area climbing guidebook in 1967. McCarty was instrumental in establishing Boulder’s open-space program and was a founding

member of both The Meadows Swim and Tennis Club in Boulder and the Walden Hollow Fishing Club in Granby. He is survived by his five children Eric, Conrad, April, Chance and Somerset, and 11 grandchildren and two step-grandchildren.

JAMESON “JAMIE” MILLER MAPEL ’64 passed away on Feb. 5, 2008. After graduating from Fountain Valley, he continued to the University of Texas where he received both his undergraduate and law degree. He set up a distinguished career as a lawyer in Houston, Texas.

WILLIAM “BILL” H.C. FAILEY ’66 died at age 69 on March 29, 2017. After graduating from Fountain Valley in 1966, he continued his education at Indiana University, earning a bachelor of science degree in business in 1971. He is survived by his wife of 37 years, Patty Failey; children, Billy and Abigail, and three grandchildren.

Frederick “Fred”

CHARLES BENNETT ’76 died on Feb. 23, 2018, at age 59. While attending Fountain Valley School, he was the captain of the tennis team and was involved in music and theater. Bennett attended Western State University where he continued to play tennis and began working in the outdoor recreation and restaurant industries. His passions were skiing, tennis, backpacking, music and family.

He worked for the Aspen Ski Corporation, the Pikes Peak YMCA, and as a volunteer ski instructor with the Winter Park Program for the Disabled. He is survived by his mother, Mary; step-mothers Edwina Bennett and Olivia Bennett; siblings Kate, Jeb, Molly, Jodie and Gena; and three step-siblings. His father, Gerald Webb Bennett ’45, passed away January 2018, just one month prior.

The School recently learned of the passing of DEANE JOHNSTON ’72, who died Aug. 5, 2013, at age 60. During his life, he was an avid outdoorsman and skier. He is survived by many loving family members.

The Robert D. Cole Endowment for Faculty Development was established by the family of the late Robert D. Cole who was a trustee and parent of David Cole ’86. Through their funding of faculty travel, the Cole family seeks to enrich the experiences that faculty can bring to the classroom.

The Gates/FVS Teacher Education Fund created by the Gates Family Foundation of Denver, provides annual funding of faculty research and independent study.

OPERATIONS

The J. Philo Nelson Endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bedford, parents of Erik ’89 and grandparents of Owen ’16, in honor of Mrs. Bedford’s father. Annual income is used to provide an award for outstanding teaching to a member of the FVS faculty as selected by the Head of School.

The General Trust supports the School’s operations.

FACULTY SUPPORT The F. Martin Brown Fund for the Teaching of Science honors one of Fountain Valley School’s founding faculty members who served with distinction from 1930 through 1973.

Income from the fund provides annual support of teaching salaries in the sciences. The fund was established in 1992 by a gift from Morgan Sinclaire ’35 and his wife, Esther.

The Lane Faculty Family Endowment was established by Nelson and Neecee Lane, parents of Phelps ’98 and Tennessee ’00, and supports the educational fund for children of Fountain Valley School faculty.

The Lewis Perry Endowment was established by numerous friends of Fountain Valley’s third Headmaster.

Annual income is used to support the humanities, and endows a teaching chair for a member of the humanities faculty selected by the Headmaster.

The Faculty Fund supports the School’s operations.

PROGRAMS The Armour Family Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. A. Watson Armour, parents of Jean ’94 and Molly ’99.

Annual earnings support the School’s Arts program.

Mary and Dan Armour, P ’94, ’99 The Gardner Lynch Gordon Carney Restricted Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Carney II in memory of their son, Gardner ’92. The fund supports the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute at Fountain Valley School, which provides training, research and literature on the pedagogy of leadership. The Institute’s annual Leadership Lab takes place each summer at Fountain Valley School, and several FVS faculty have participated in this training.

Brian Scott Chandler ’95 Memorial Fund was established by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Chandler ’65, and his brother, Bob Chandler ’88, to support the performing arts and other programs.

ENDOWMENT GIVING CONTINUED The Creeden Endowment Fund for Experiential Learning honors Fountain Valley’s sixth headmaster Dr. Jack Creeden and his wife, Dr. Carole Martin. Income supports students who need assistance to take part in the Interim program.

Named in tribute to the legendary riding master who served from 1944 to 1975, the fund’s income supports the riding program, facilities and equipment.

The Dominique Dunne Memorial Fund supports Fountain Valley School’s annual film competition. It was established by family and friends of Dominique Dunne ’77.

The John W. Emery ’44 Memorial Endowment Fund was established by Jean Jackson Emery in honor of her late husband and father of John W. (Jake) Emery Jr. ’71, in recognition of his lifelong appreciation of music. Annual income supports the promotion of creativity in the School’s music department and benefits one or more students in music.

Henry Poor Endowment The Headmaster Henry B. Poor Endowment Fund was created to honor the commitment of Mr. Poor in supporting students of diversity, spirituality and character in order that they have the

opportunity to experience a unique, college preparatory education at Fountain Valley School. This endowment fund contributes to the financing of qualified students’ expenses incurred at FVS that are not covered by existing financial aid or the FVS Interim Scholarship Program.

The Frederick von Stade ’42 Music Endowment was created in 2007 by his four daughters in celebration of his 85th birthday. Income from the fund is used to provide support for the music program.

The Charles Kurchinski Annual Music Competition Endowment Fund was established by Michael Dively to sponsor a student music competition that awards cash prizes to the top three musicians in the vocal and instrumental categories.

Bancroft Scholarship Endowment was funded by Christopher Bancroft ’69 and provides annual scholarship awards for deserving students.

The Lane Horse Program Endowment established by Nelson and Neecee Lane, supports the School’s riding program.

The Nicholas McCumber ’71 Visiting Artist Program Endowment supports the Artist-In-Residence Program.

The Round Square Endowment was established in 2016 by Former Trustee Jim and Valerie Webster, parents of Danny ’14. The endowment supports the Round Square program at Fountain Valley School. Income from the fund underwrites the operating expenses of the program and supports the cost of educational exchanges at independent schools in many parts of the world.

Valerie and Jim Webster P ’14 The Rumbough Music Fund was given by Stanley M. Rumbough Jr. in memory of his son, David ’68. It supports the general activities of the Music Department.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID

Coach Kardok Scholarship Fund Donald “Coach” Kardok P ’73, ’75, ’77 arrived as a faculty member in the fall of 1969 and from then on he made Fountain Valley School his home. The Kardok Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 with an initial leadership gift from an alumnus/former trustee along with matched funds from the School’s endowment to ensure that FVS is within reach for bright and dedicated students who desire to expand their intellectual horizons.

Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship Endowment Established by current and former trustees, the Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship provides a Fountain Valley School education to a qualified and deserving student who demonstrates need. The intent is to transform the recipient’s life through the FVS experience.

Johnston Jr. ’48 Learning Center Scholarship Endowment The Learning Center Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by an FVS parent to support deserving students who benefit from the Learning Center at Fountain Valley School of Colorado.

This scholarship provides opportunities for qualified students to receive study assistance, learning and academic assessment, individualized academic support, tutoring, and educational skill development.

The Jane and Charles F. Emery ’38 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Jane and Chuck Emery. The purpose is to provide financial support to a student who could not otherwise attend Fountain Valley School.

Andrea Geyling-Moore and John Moore ’76 The Scott Family Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James R. Scott ’68, parents of James ’95, Courtney ’99 and Dana ’05, to provide scholarship opportunities for Native American

students on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Indian Reservations in Montana, and Native American students who are residents of Montana or the Sheridan, Wyo. area. The goal of the scholarship is to strengthen ties between Fountain Valley School and the Native American communities whose children would benefit from the transformative education that Fountain Valley can provide.

The Sinclaire Endowment was established by Reginald Sinclaire, father of Morgan ’35. The income from the fund is used to provide support for master teachers and for students of exceptional promise who require financial aid to attend FVS. The Henderson Scholarship Endowment established by Robert E. Henderson ’44, provides annual scholarship income.

The Joseph B. Holloway ’70 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by his friends from the proceeds of a 2000 benefit performance of George Gershwin’s “American Rhapsody” at the Triad Theatre in New York City.

The Theda Clark Smith Endowment was established in 1990 by Tamblin C. Smith ’45. Fund income provides scholarship assistance to students from Wisconsin’s Fox River Valley.

STUDENT RECOGNITION The Hunter Frost Theatre Award Fund was established in 1999 by former headmaster Lewis Perry Jr. and Hoyt Bacon ’69 in honor of Mr. Hunter Frost, Fountain Valley’s performing arts director from 1969-1982 (also faculty 1949-1952 and 1966-1982). The award is given each year to an outstanding senior actor.

The Barker Wardrop Memorial Fund was established through an anonymous gift in 1983 in memory of Barker ’72, to be awarded to an FVS tennis player who combines skill with good nature and persistence, qualities for which Barker’s classmates especially remember him.

The Pauline C. Li and Samuel C. Li ’84 Student Opportunity Fund was established by Samuel Li ’84 to provide financial aid students help with additional expenses.
