Dear Friends, 2020 has left an indelible mark on the history of this planet, this country, and this School. A global pandemic that has claimed the lives of millions. Multiple killings of Black Americans by police. Vitriolic political partisanship that threatened the very unity of these United States.

As an educational institution, we seek to learn from the challenges we face; to see problems as opportunities for growth and development. And while the struggles we faced in 2020 are far from academic and have profoundly affected the lives of nearly everyone on this planet, I am proud of the way that the Fountain Valley School community has come together, risen in the face of adversity, and ultimately emerged stronger. 2020 has been a crucible for character and our core values of Courage, Compassion, Curiosity, SelfReliance and Open-Mindedness have served us well and are more relevant than ever before.

It has been more than a year and a half since we last published the FVS Bulletin. This delay is yet another consequence of 2020 while we have focused all of our resources on supporting our students and our community.

In the following pages, we have endeavored to create a time capsule of sorts that documents the collective experience of Fountain Valley School during this unprecedented period of history and the lessons we’ve learned. And in so doing, it is our hope to preserve them as inspiration for those who will follow in our footsteps as students and stewards of this great and wonderful School.

Colgate Award

The Froelicher Award is Fountain Valley School’s highest honor. It’s presented each year to the senior who, in the opinion of the faculty, best models the core values of the School—remarkable talent, diligent work ethic and extraordinary character.

The 2020 recipient, Savian Johnson Asa Nightbear Czerny, has represented FVS from the peaks to the prairie, serving as president of our Community Council and as a member of the boys’ varsity climbing team that won backto-back state championships in 2018 and 2019. Johnson is also a deeply humanistic photographer and a talented artist who inspired students and faculty alike through his “all-in,” winning performance at Stupid Night Out. He’s even helped provide the soundtrack for the Class of 2020, playing oboe for the FVS concert band and the symphony orchestra.

Sarah Elizabeth García Chong exemplifies the qualities former faculty member Sidney S. Bunting most admired— scholarship, intellect and culture. Her incredible life’s journey has taken her from Los Angeles to the drug violence– plagued Ciudad Juarez and then to Fountain Valley School. Chong, who began at FVS as a day student, is one of only two members of the class of 2020 to receive one of our highest academic distinctions, a Global Scholars Diploma. She’s also served as Community Council secretary, shared her experiences and culture during multiple Unity Day presentations, and represented FVS at a national Student Diversity Leadership Conference. As the Gannett House RA, Chong has modeled grit, persistence and humility, along with a determination to make the FVS experience meaningful for every student.

The Eleanor W. Emery Award is awarded by the faculty to the student whose contributions to the Fountain Valley School community reflect the qualities Mrs. Emery admired most— educational commitment, integrity, warmth, good humor and enthusiasm. While this award primarily recognizes the recipient’s profound sensitivity for others, this year’s honoree, Qiyuan “Kitty” Zhang, is equally accomplished in the arts, athletics and academics.

She was a member of the track, cross country, basketball and tennis teams; danced on the FVS stage and played piano in the chamber orchestra; and served as an FVS admission ambassador and the RA in the South Perry dorm. Zhang is beloved among her fellow students for her strong maternal instinct, understanding, empathy, selfreliance, and compassion.

The Samuel Colgate Memorial Award honors “Excellence in Sportsmanship, Loyalty, and Character,” and was established in memory of Samuel Colgate, Class of 1931, who died shortly after graduating from Fountain Valley School. Preceded by three generations of family members who have attended FVS, Alexander Gabriel Ashby carries the torch proudly representing the fourth. He is one of only two members of the Class of 2020 to earn a varsity letter in all 12 seasons, and plays hockey and lacrosse with tremendous grit. His kind and compassionate manner belies this intensely competitive spirit, but also endears him to his teammates for whom he serves as a role model and mentor to younger players. In his time at FVS, this young man developed into a tremendous athlete and a reliable, resourceful and dependable member of our community who leads selflessly by example as both an athlete and scholar.

Department & Leadership Awards J. Philo Nelson Award This award honors former FVS Trustee Kit Bedford’s father, J. Philo Nelson, by recognizing the highest levels of teaching commitment among the FVS faculty. During a year when COVID-19 tested every member of the FVS community, 2020 award recipient Kat Baker leveraged her expertise as a scientific scholar, along with her high level of emotional intelligence, to play a critical role in the School’s ongoing riskassessment initiatives. Baker teaches robotics, physics and astronomy, and is known for her patience, kindness and clarity in presenting topics that can be difficult to grasp. Baker is also the technical director for the School’s theatre department, and is a strong advocate for FVS students’ diversity, equity and inclusion initiatives.

Alumni Awards Athletic Hall of Fame The Fountain Valley School Athletic Hall of Fame recognizes the contributions of studentathletes, coaches, parents and community supporters to the School’s rich tradition of athletic success. Two individuals and one team were inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame Class of 2020. The virtual ceremony was hosted by Emy Hanna Koontz ’09 who is a member of the Hall of Fame Class of 2014. She received the Varsity Club Award at Commencement, and went on to have a spectacular track career at Colorado College.

Brittney Moore Stroh ’06 was nominated to the Class of 2019 Athletic Hall of Fame, but was unable to be at that ceremony and thus was honored in 2020. A versatile athlete, Stroh ran varsity track and played field hockey all four years at Fountain Valley. In track, she qualified for state competitions every year in the 100-, 200- and 400-meter races, the long jump, and the 1,600-meter relays. “She was FVS track before FVS even had a track, B u l l e t i n

Norm Jones ’62 is a member of the only four-generation Fountain Valley School

family. His father, Francis Jones, was Class of 1936, and his daughter, Beth Ashby, is Class of 1989. His grandsons Nate Ashby ’18, and Gabe Ashby ’20, have carried on the tradition. Jones was an accomplished, all-around athlete at Fountain Valley, playing four years of varsity hockey, three years of varsity baseball, three years of varsity football and one year of varsity tennis. His senior year he won the Doc Romnes Hockey Award for “his outstanding sportsmanship, teamwork and personal improvement during the season.”

After graduation, Jones parlayed his love of sports into a 48-year broadcasting career, most notably as the voice of the Colorado Avalanche National Hockey League team from 1995 to 2009.

The top six players on this undefeated 1964 Boys Varsity Tennis Team include: Brent Abel ’67, Tim Carnegie ’65, John Meek ’65, Jon Brewer ’66, Keith Balinger ’65 and Jay Bird ’67. Their coach was David Banks. Because they were undefeated, members of the 1964 Boys Varsity Tennis Team were invited to play in a tournament against all of the top schools in the state, including the big public schools. The format was structured so that the top five players competed in their own tournament based on their position on the team. These mighty Danes won four of the five divisions to win the state title!

Arts Guild The Fountain Valley School Arts Guild was created in 2010 to recognize artistic endeavors by our alumni, former faculty and supporters. The 2020 inductees were honored in a virtual ceremony emceed by Mark Wong ’86. Wong, who is a professional ceramic artist, was inducted into the Arts Guild in 2016. Mark Seelye ’70 believes records are made to be broken. Take the 880-yard race, for example. He broke the FVS record in 1969 in 2:06.5. Then, he broke his own record in 1970 with a 2:04.8, and broke it again later that year with a 2:02.8.

And that record held for about 30 years.

In his senior year at FVS, Seelye was named captain of the track team and went undefeated in the 880 at all five meets. He also had a first-place finish in the 440-yard race, anchored the mile relay team and competed in the long jump. The tenacious Seelye has broken racing records outside of FVS as well—most notably, the grueling Pikes Peak Ascent. He’s completed the 13.2-mile trail run 36 consecutive times, a record that’s unlikely to be eclipsed.

into the Arts Guild as an actor, producer, director and writer, and Dominique as an actor. Both siblings performed in several Fountain Valley play productions under theater director Hunter Frost.

Brother and sister Griffin Dunne ’74 and Dominique Dunne ’77 were to be inducted into the 2019 Arts Guild Class, but Griffin was unable to attend the ceremony, so they were honored in 2020. Dominique passed away in 1982, and Griffin accepted this honor on her behalf. Griffin is being inducted 10

Griffin’s prolific and acclaimed professional career began in 1975. He’s acted in many popular films, including “An American Werewolf in London,” “Who’s That Girl,” “After Hours” and “Dallas Buyers Club.” He currently appears in the hit TV show “This is Us.” Griffin made his directorial debut with a short film, “Duke of Groove,” which he also wrote, and subsequently directed the box-office successes “Practical Magic” and “Addicted to Love.” He’s been nominated for Oscar, Golden Globe, Cannes and Emmy Awards, and has won several film festival awards.

After graduating from FVS, Dominique studied acting at the University of Colorado, but left after one year.

Three weeks later, she landed her first professional acting job in the TV movie “Diary of a Teenage Hitchhiker.” Over the next three years, before her tragic death, she appeared in 15 TV series and movies, including “Lou Grant,” “Breaking Away,” “Fame,” “Hart to Hart,” “CHiPs” and “Hill Street Blues.” Her most notable role was as Dana Freeling in the famous horror film “Poltergeist.”

Oliver “Pete” LaFarge, Jr. ’49 is best known as a pioneering folk singer and songwriter, but was also a talented actor, painter, writer, boxer and rodeo competitor. As LaFarge’s sister, Povy Bigbee, told the Bulletin: “The breadth of his genius was such that one evening, he rode saddle broncs in Madison Square Garden and then left to go play the lead in King Lear off-Broadway.” LaFarge died at the age of 34, shortly after signing with Columbia Records, and is being recognized posthumously. His native American protest songs influenced a generation of folk artists whom he also counted as friends, including Woody Guthrie, Bob Dylan, Buffy SainteMarie, Pete Seeger and Johnny Cash— who recorded five of LaFarge’s songs.

Daniel Kaufman ’70 began his career as a painter inspired by Rothko, Pollock and Kandinsky. But he continued to be drawn to fine art photography—a love that dates back to his childhood, when he saved money from his paper route to buy his first camera. In the 1990s, Kaufman was known as a minimalist photographer of architecture and landscapes, but his later work has taken on a more painterly and sculptural quality. His Rothko Series captures colors on shipping containers, and his Mondrian Port series is based on the paintings of Piet Mondrian and the De Stijl movement. Kaufman’s fine art photos appear in the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Chinese-American Museum in Los Angeles, and in private and corporate collections around the world.

Modbo is known for encouraging and fostering artists, and has exhibited works by Fountain Valley students and faculty. Ciborowski also plays chamber music, is a member of a band, and is a highly trained ballet accompanist.

She teaches students of all ages and skill levels at her piano studio, and has sung at Reunion piano bars, accompanied by former faculty member Cecil Hogarth.

Lauren Ciborowski ’00 is a renaissance woman. A gallerist, concert pianist, vocalist and piano instructor, she practices, teaches and supports the arts.

development. Maiurro then joined Discover Goodwill of Colorado as director of development, and is currently serving as executive director of the Memorial Hospital Foundation. In her first 30 days there, she landed the foundation’s biggest gift in history, which was directed to the COVID relief fund.

The Young Alumni Award is given to outstanding alumni who have graduated within the last five to 20 years and are making a difference in their communities.

The 2020 honoree is Kate Faricy Maiurro ’00. Maiurro has dedicated her career to serving nonprofits. Shortly after graduating from college, she became a member of the Fountain Valley staff. Over the next 12 years, she worked in the School’s admissions and development offices, eventually becoming director of 12

The Elizabeth Froelicher Smith Distinguished Service Award is presented for exceptionally meritorious service to Fountain Valley School. In 2020, we were

fortunate to honor two of our community members with this award.

Trustee Parker Wang, parent of Simon ’20, is a major donor and fundraiser and served on the Board of Trustees’ Preservation, Maintenance and Construction Committee.

He is an enthusiastic ambassador for the School in China, reaching out to families to help them in their decision to choose Fountain Valley. Wang also serves as a trusted resource for current families, and formed the FVS Chinese Alumni Association to act as a bridge between cultures and help keep Danes in China connected to the School and each other.

Chris Sanchez ’90, is a trustee and parent of Mia ’22. As the principal hydrologist at Bishop-Brogden water consultants in Denver and a member of the Colorado Board of Examiners of Water Well Construction and Pump Installation, Sanchez’s expertise is invaluable in his role as chair of Fountain Valley’s Land Management Committee. He has helped with the campus’ complex aquifer system, the restoration of the pond and the installation of a communications tower. As a trustee, Sanchez champions diversity, equity and inclusion in all areas at Fountain Valley.

The Lewis Perry Jr. Alumni Award is presented to an alum who provided strong leadership and support to FVS during the preceding year. The 2020 honoree is Janet Dulin ’77. Dulin is her Class Agent and a member of the Board of Trustees, serving on the Committee on Trustees and the Preservation, Maintenance and Construction Committee. She also co-chaired the School’s Annual Fund committee, leveraging her energy and enthusiasm to help motivate donors to surpass our Annual Fund goal in 2019.

And if that weren’t enough, Dulin was a member of the Campaign Planning Committee that successfully completed Phase 1 of the campus master plan, which resulted in the Julie and Spencer Penrose Athletic Center, new maintenance facilities, and expanded faculty housing.

Dulin is a long-time member of the Casa Serena and Elizabeth Sage Hare Societies, and her family has deep Fountain Valley roots— including her husband, Former Trustee Jim Dulin ’76; her daughter, Emily Rey ’11, and her stepchildren, Hunter Dulin ’07; Tyler Dulin ’09; and Callie Dulin ’11.

The Distinguished Casa Serena Society Member Award recognizes dedicated and significant leadership giving to the School that exemplifies the principles and values of our founding benefactors. The 2020 honoree is Former Trustee Houston Harte ’70. Harte is a philanthropist who has donated to the School at the Casa Serena Society level for nearly five decades. He has also stepped up with significant gifts for special projects, and has given generously to the General Endowment, the Lewis Perry Endowment for the Humanities, and the Creeden Endowment for Experiential Learning. Harte proudly serves as his Class Agent, and helped organize their recent 50th reunion.

or international community. The 2020 honoree is Hal Tearse ’70, who has dedicated nearly 50 years to youth development in hockey. Tearse played varsity hockey at FVS for four years and won the “Dedication, Desire, & Discipline” award his junior year. He began coaching while he was still a student athlete at the University of Minnesota, and has coached at every amateur level since then. He’s also served in the USA Hockey Coach Education Program, producing dozens of hockey skills videos and hundreds of articles about coaching. Tearse is currently head boys hockey coach at Providence Academy in Plymouth, Minnesota, and is active in Spark-Y, a nonprofit that empowers youth with hands-on education rooted in sustainability and entrepreneurship.

While the pandemic has tested FVS in ways that were incomprehensible a short while ago, there have been some silver linings. Here’s how members of our community have been affected by COVID-19, and how they’ve found hope within struggle.

COVID COMES TO COLORADO Jan

The first noticeable impact COVID-19 had on FVS plans and programs was the Jan. 29, 2020 announcement that the Interim China trip was cancelled. By early March, all Interim excursions had been called off. Students were only able to leave campus via school transportation, and students were released early for spring break. Still, daily life was much the same on campus.

“The 1,100 acres of prairie that surround us provide both a comforting buffer and abundant opportunities for engaging activities. We are exploring global perspectives through cooking and baking, enjoying classic and contemporary films, and taking full advantage of our gym, pool, and other athletic facilities. Of course, we are also enjoying the spring weather which affords opportunities to unplug, connect with nature, and also with each other,” Webb wrote on March 19, 2020.

But by April 2020, the upheaval began. Colorado coronavirus protocols resulted in the suspension of in-person classes statewide. FVS launched Fountain Valley School Virtual (FVSV), an online learning system that allowed students and teachers to digitally see and hear each other both synchronously and asynchronously. The goal was to virtually recreate the energy, enthusiasm and support that is the hallmark of the FVS community, while maintaining the rigorous academic standards FVS is known for.

ACADEMIC VIRTUAL REALITY The spring 2020 semester ended with all students learning online, but in-person instruction resumed in the fall. However, after a case of coronavirus was identified at the School in midOctober, the entire campus went into quarantine and back to virtual classes for a week. Students and teachers were better prepared this time, thanks to the work they had put in during the April 2020 launch of FVSV.

“I spent spring break 2020 assessing how to teach virtually. I decided to go back to the basics—slow and steady,” said history teacher Penny Steele. “I felt it was important to teach skills first before content—things like self-advocacy, how to ask for and receive help, how to approach learning even if you don’t have your teacher in front of you.”

Going back to the basics reminded Steele of why she became a teacher in the first place. “I teach because I genuinely like high schoolers. This whole experience has allowed me to say to my students that I care about them as people even more than as students,” she said. “I feel like my values around relationship-building have been what’s carried me through this. If students can come out of this realizing that teachers really do care, I think they will come back to the classroom excited and grateful to learn together.”

Suzanne Tibbits, who teaches chemistry and physics, believes some of the lessons she learned from online teaching remain relevant in the in-person environment.

“For most of my classes, there are a lot of good online simulations for the classic experiments we do. Kids still get to participate in the lab portion of class, so it’s kind of seamless,” she said. “I think hands-on labs are better, but it’s a very nice option to have simulations available.

They can save time but still get the concept across.”

Tibbits has learned to teach online using two computers simultaneously. One computer screen runs Google Meet, in which all of the students in a class can gather in small peer groups. “I can go from room to room, just like in the classroom,” she said.

The second computer screen, which is connected to a digital camera, is for Tibbits’ class presentations. “I can use a whiteboard and work out equations and diagrams.

It pretty much replicates everything I can do in the classroom,” she said.

NAVIGATING THE NEW NORMAL Webb said one of those lessons is that “quarantines work in stemming the spread of the virus, but that isolation and uncertainty can be detrimental to the mind, body and spirit if not managed properly.”

So students, faculty and staff turned to the campus prairie to improve their physical health. Along the way, they found it boosted their mental and emotional health as well.

“We use our prairie as a getaway,” said Steele, who is also one of the School’s Outdoor Education coaches.

“This is a year like none other, and we need to find a sense of space, a way to step away. We want our students to feel like the prairie is their safe haven.

Some students even said they started to wake up earlier in the mornings and go out on a run.”

As the world moves into the second year of the coronavirus pandemic, FVS has entered a new normal.

But that doesn’t mean the changes can’t embrace the norms that are at the heart of the FVS experience.

Luke Day '97

Emergency room doctor at UCHealth Poudre Valley Hospital in Fort Collins, Colorado, and UCHealth Medical Center of the Rockies in Loveland, Colorado As the mass casualty director for two northern Colorado medical facilities, Luke Day, MD, has seen plenty of health catastrophes. But nothing prepared him for the COVID-19 outbreak.

“We are all first-year medical students when it comes to this disease. We don’t understand it; It’s a humbling disease with a very complex physiology,” he said. “And there are extremely high caseloads—higher than really anyone should experience.”

Day has worked as the facilities’ COVID director since the initial outbreak, seeing firsthand how COVID caseloads have affected internal medicine, pulmonary and critical care doctors, surgeons, nurses, and other medical staff.

“There has been an incredible amount of burnout,” he said. “But we need to keep this medicine ship afloat, keep its bow to the wind, even when people feel tired, sad, betrayed and fearful of getting the virus.”

“This is the great challenge of my career at this point. Hopefully this is the great challenge of my career, total.

I’ve learned a lot about leadership and administration, and I’m still learning.”

Day doesn’t use the ship analogy lightly. He served 12 years in the Navy, ending his career as a lieutenant colonel. The Navy put him through medical school and taught him how to be a leader—skills he’s relied on during the coronavirus pandemic.

The COVID crisis has reinforced Day’s belief that leadership is the art of helping people make their way through difficult times. “There’s a science to it, but it really is an art. The art of helping people to work within a group, but also subsume their personal identity a little bit to the needs of the group,” he says. “It involves a lot of sacrifice. We had a saying in the Navy that leaders eat last.”

Lola Wright '96

Master coach, speaker and facilitator Lola Wright’s life has been all about personal transformation and collective awakening, which gives her a unique perspective on the COVID pandemic and its aftermath.

On the day of her graduation from FVS, Wright discovered she was pregnant. By age 22, she had two children, was attending night classes at Loyola University Chicago, and was working in financial services and real estate during the day.

But after two decades on this career path, Wright realized she needed an off-ramp. She wanted a way to combine her spiritual and material sides, her left and right brains. So she became an ordained minister and CEO of Chicago’s Bodhi Center, which she describes as “an organization committed to personal transformation, collective awakening, conscious activism and community-building.”

Wright’s work with the Bodhi Center involved training businesses, organizations and communities to “find their fierce and loving lives.” Using cognitive, emotional and body intelligence, she communicates her message through speeches, music and art.

On March 13, 2020, Wright resigned from the Bodhi Center. “I planned on taking a six-month sabbatical,” she said. But COVID changed that. “I ended up taking not much time off at all because the work I do is supporting people.” She wrote a book proposal; founded Fierce and Loving Enterprises, a professional training and coaching business; and launched the “Find Your Fierce and Loving” podcast at lolawright.com.

The goal behind Fierce and Loving is to “challenge our thoughts, beliefs and stories, to find the gift in our breakdowns, and to lovingly embrace our discomfort as a path to new opportunities,” Wright said. And there’s no better time to do that than during a global health crisis.

“We’re in a moment of transition. We have to learn to crawl again, to walk again. The more we can let go of the way things were and tap into curiosity and imagination about what can be, that to me is a map of opportunity,” she said. “If all we do during this time is triage and mitigate tragedy, we’ve learned very little.

Let this be an opportunity for re-creation. We’re in the midst of developing capacity for the unknown.”

Wright has no idea what the world will look like post-pandemic, but she’s encouraged because she believes innovation is always born out of crisis.

“Many people live a life of obligation. But obligation doesn’t create a life, doesn’t fuel inspiration,” she said. “Many people just got a lot of space to release obligation and become increasingly discerning about what really matters.”

Liz Tenney '11

Program coordinator for the Colorado State Board of Health and Water Quality Control Commission at the Colorado Department of Public Health and Environment Anger, frustration, gratitude, hope. Liz Tenney has seen it all during the public hearings she helps coordinate for the Colorado State Board of Health.

The Board meets once a month, and Tenney has noticed how the tenor of public communication has changed as the COVID pandemic has progressed.

“In the beginning, a lot of people were trying to help, send supplies, give ideas for alternative care sites.

It was a lot more collaborative,” she said. “Then, comments and dialogue shifted toward responding to major news declarations. Most people were pretty angry about things like school closures and mask mandates.”

But no matter what the subject, Tenney likes to see the public participation. What once were sparsely attended Board of Health meetings became major opportunities for citizen engagement and input.

“When meetings became virtual, they became more accessible to the public,” she said. “Where we would maybe have 20 people attending before COVID, some meetings have had hundreds of participants.”

As a tech-savvy millennial, Tenney embraces the new virtual work world she’s part of, and believes the remote-work trend will continue post-pandemic. The Department of Health has about 1,500 employees across the state, and most of them have been working remotely since March 2020.

“It’s a pretty impressive feat, and I think an interesting boon of the whole COVID response,” she said. “I feel fortunate that I can do most of my job remotely, and I like that we’re not on the rigid 8-5 work day we were used to before. I can adjust my schedule and do things like taking exercise breaks during the day. It opens up a whole new world and gives me a lot more flexibility in my job.”

This virtual freedom is also important for Tenney’s mental health. With a master’s degree in public health from the University of Denver, she’s used to focusing on the key role of mental health in overall health. “But COVID has really driven that home,” she said. “It’s shown us how important it is for people to reach out and ask for help or advice, or just connect with others.

And it’s shown us that it’s sort of a grab bag of how seriously people take their mental health.”

In a time when many people can’t go to the movies, hang out in a bar with friends, or just meet up at a party, Tenney believes we all have to figure out what boosts our social and emotional health, and make that a priority. And she’s already seeing that happening.

“I think the pandemic has taught us that we can handle a whole life-altering change for an extended period of time. Behavior change is literally one of the hardest things to get people to do when you’re doing a public health intervention. Smoking tobacco is touted as one of the most successful, but it took a couple decades,” she said.

And yet in a single year, Tenney notes that people have made significant behavioral changes they may not even notice.

Some of LATHER’s biggest clients are boutiques in hotels, spas and resorts. Coronavirus shutdowns decimated that market, and Hoyt was forced to lay off much of her staff. “I feel it’s been the hardest year of my life. There were times when I thought the business wouldn’t survive, but now I think it will be OK,” she said.

One of her reasons for optimism is a product pivot early on in the pandemic. In response to customer requests, LATHER began manufacturing hand sanitizers and cleansing wipes.

Emilie Hoyt '93

CEO of LATHER, a natural personal care company based in Pasadena, California Along with history classes and time at the barn riding horses, Emilie Hoyt’s FVS experience included an unexpected element: debilitating migraines. Determined to find the cause, Hoyt began doing extensive research.

Study after study showed Hoyt that personal care products were likely the culprit behind her migraines.

The lotions, shampoos and other seemingly innocuous items she used every day were loaded with toxic chemicals. That gave Hoyt the idea of manufacturing her own line of natural and safe hair, face, body and wellness products.

In 1999, just two years after graduating from Pepperdine University, Hoyt debuted her first product— naturally fragranced olive oil soaps—at her first LATHER store in Pasadena.

“At that age, you’re fearless. You think you know everything,” she said with a laugh.

Of course, Hoyt soon realized she had a lot to learn.

But through the years, her company thrived. Until the coronavirus hit.

LATHER sanitizer is made from food-grade denatured ethanol alcohol, lemon and orange essential oils, and aloe vera. The food-grade alcohol is pure and mild, but also nearly quadruple the price of standard alcohol.

To make the price point work, Hoyt sold the hand sanitizer at cost or at a small loss. She viewed it as a goodwill gesture for her clients that were desperate to have high-quality, natural sanitizers available when they welcomed their guests back.

Hoyt, who is a member of the FVS Board of Trustees, also helped supply FVS with hand sanitizer, which, for a while, was quite hard to find in the quantities that the school required. “I know how challenging coronavirus has been for our company, and a boarding school is a whole other level of challenge,” she said. “There have been moments when I felt completely frozen, and I couldn’t make decisions. Watching how FVS worked through their issues was very helpful to me.”

Hoyt said the biggest business lesson the pandemic has taught her is to hone in on her company’s core values and focus on day-today operations.

“Because it’s almost impossible to really plan for the future, you need to know your team is aligned on the goals of that day or that week. So whatever comes up during the day, people are focused on running a really efficient and streamlined operation,” she said. “In a way, I feel like it’s more important to develop a team that’s really agile, can be flexible, can handle all the surprises that come along rather than a team that’s focused on an end goal, because you really don’t know what challenges will affect that goal.”

Kizzy BaileyMartin '97

Cultural and Change Communications Lead at WellStar Health System in Marietta, Georgia As part of the internal communications team for a nonprofit health system that spans 11 hospitals and five health parks in the Atlanta area, Kizzy Bailey has a daily, direct impact on thousands of frontline workers combatting COVID. “I have seen the true face of humanity and kindness,” she said. “Our nurses and doctors are doing everything they can to make sure we’re not only dedicated to providing world-class healthcare, but also providing hope and kindness to all of our patients and their families.”

Bailey and her team help support those efforts in a variety of ways. They attend virtual Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and World Health Organization briefings. They then have monthly status updates with as many as 2,000 doctors and nurses to share information from those briefings, along with hospital operations efforts like surge planning, personal protective equipment status, and medical staff retention and recruitment efforts.

Bailey and her team have also developed a weekly newsletter with COVID information that employees can access on their own time, rather than having to navigate numerous email updates. And they’ve partnered with WellStar’s information technology department to create an internal resource page on all things COVID. Staff members can find everything from travel policies to flu guidelines in one easy-to-navigate site.

Bailey is also a leader in helping to support the medical team’s emotional and mental health. Her communications team created a 24-hour workforce hotline in which employees can talk about anything from managing stress to what to do if they get COVID.

“We have prioritized being even more communicative and transparent,” Bailey said. “Keeping communications open helps prevent rumors from spreading, and shows that leadership is doing what they can. It also shows our team that we care about them as people as well.”

On a personal level, Bailey is learning how to work from home while also caring for her 7-year-old daughter and 2-year-old son. Home schooling was a whole other adventure. “I had to figure out how to juggle my Zoom calls and my daughter’s Zoom calls,” she said with a wry laugh. “But I do think one of the silver linings of the pandemic is that people are really understanding that teleworking can truly be done anywhere.

Delivering babies and caring for outpatients during a pandemic is taxing enough. Then imagine planning a wedding during the summer of COVID as well.

Folan, who is a graduate of Georgetown University’s School of Medicine, has found strength and support in her community of coworkers. “It’s a hard time to be learning medicine, but our residency has been very supportive,” she said.

Similarly, Folan relied on the FVS community when she married fellow FVS alum Andrew Finanger ’08 in August in a family-only ceremony on the School prairie, officiated by their science teacher Robert Gustke.

CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS: Walking the Talk of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion You hear another student in the campus center call somebody else the “n-word.” When you approach the student about this, they say it’s their freedom of speech to use the term if they want.

How do you continue the conversation?

It’s the day after the 2020 election. You hear a group of students in the campus center loudly celebrating and flaunting the fact that their candidate won. Other students are clearly upset by the results. What might be a good thing to do in this situation?

Scenarios like these can make us feel uncomfortable. But they can also spur the introspection and discussion that helps both people and institutions become more diverse, equitable and inclusive.

That’s why these hypothetical yet all-too-relevant topics were on the agenda for student advisory meetings last fall. The goal was to introduce the idea of crucial conversations and equip students and teachers with the tools and language they need to lean into their discomfort, be open to meaningful change, and ultimately create safe spaces for all members of the FVS community to be welcomed and appreciated for who they are. The intention was also to set the tone for the school year ahead.

These crucial conversations are part of FVS’s ongoing work to foster diversity, equity and inclusion (DEI). For the last seven years, Head of School Will Webb and Assistant Head of School Rafael Muciño have been working to integrate DEI work into the institutional fabric of FVS, with a mission of evolving the culture and mindset within the FVS community. “DEI must be in our very being, in everything we do, and it is critical that we work actively to it front and center in all that we do,” Webb says.

But during the summer of 2020, when deaths of Black people in police custody spawned nationwide unrest and a surge of activism focused on systemic racial injustices, some members of the FVS community made it clear they hadn’t experienced FVS in the way the School intended.

That June, FVS alumni, parents and students began circulating a form letter that began at Colorado College, calling for FVS to, among other things, stop tokenizing Black students, condemn the police departments involved in recent Black deaths, acknowledge that the FVS campus sits on unceded territory of native people and work to build relationships with local indigenous populations, introduce classes about race into the FVS curriculum, focus on diversity in hiring and enrollment, and invest in student anti-racism resources and efforts. This letter was followed by the launch of the BIPOC@FVS Instagram page and numerous emails that were sent to Webb, as well as other members of the administration and Board of Trustees.

Faculty and staff admit these criticisms were hard to hear. But they served as a call to better communicate the DEI efforts already underway at FVS, and also to reinforce the existing commitment to DEI.

I spent most of my Sophomore Year correcting people when they confused me for another Black Student. The thing was, we were of different heights, faces, voices, mannerisms, and grad classes. The only thing that we had in common was our light brown skin. And apparently, that was enough to confuse every white student, and some faculty, who would get us mixed up.

This is WIP. My sophomore year and we were playing catchphrase and the guy gets his word…looks at me, looks down, looks at me, smiles, looks up and says “this might be where (my name) is from” and the teacher takes the card and I peep it and the word was “the ghetto” – im black and from Chicago.

In 2007, the Dean of Students said there was nothing he could do about a student wearing a straight pride shirt and said it was no different than the LGBTQIA pride shirt I was wearing.

Some examples of positive representation can look like: more BIPOC teachers, history curriculum that isn’t white-washed, textbooks and novels written by Black, Indigenous and people of color, anti-racist education and more.

This will not only benefit your students of color but also advance the unlearning of racism within a lot of your white students, because when learning racist narratives or ideologies it will for sure create a racist person 100% of the time.

I had such a hard time in history classes because they were taught with the assumption that you understood the basics of christianity and western culture. I did not know much about either, so I struggled through any european history topics. When they taught about eastern religions and cultures, they broke everything down so simply and related everything back to western society.

DIVERSITY COMMITTEE SETS THE SCENE In June 2020, the school formed a Diversity Task Force made up of members representing all School departments. The task force met weekly to discuss how the FVS community can better implement and expand DEI initiatives. Also in June, FVS launched a self-survey in which students, parents, alumni and faculty were encouraged to share their experiences and observations about racism and discrimination that they may have experienced at FVS. Using results from the self-survey, comments from the FVS community, and input from the task force, in August 2020 the FVS faculty held in-service meetings (pictured to the left) and workshops specifically focused on DEI. Also in August, the task force transitioned into a permanent Diversity Committee that’s charged with overseeing dozens of DEI recommendations through 2022.

One of the Diversity Committee recommendations is to encourage teachings and training inspired by the best-selling book Crucial Conversations: Tools for Talking When Stakes are High. During the fall 2020 semester, students worked on developing skills for crucial conversations during a series of their advisory group meetings. Student leaders introduced a prompt, and faculty were on hand to help moderate the ensuing discussions.

Other key concepts include not accusing others, working on listening skills, being willing to engage in dialogue, inviting opposing views, and realizing that understanding a person’s views doesn’t necessarily mean that you must agree with those views.

One of the goals of the work was to discuss not only what someone would hypothetically do when confronted with an uncomfortable topic like racism or political differences, but also what they’ve actually done in a similar scenario.

“Others need to feel safe sharing their observations and stories, even if they differ.

Otherwise, they don’t speak up, and you can’t test the accuracy of and relevancy of your views,” the Crucial Conversations @ FVS guide states.

“Posing questions is more authentic than role playing,” Kuiper says. “For instance, when someone has heard the ‘n’ word or other racial slurs used, what have they done? What would they have done differently? How might they have been better allies? Would they feel comfortable telling their peers they’re doing something wrong? Would it make a difference if they tell someone they disapprove of what that person is doing or saying?”

After a crucial conversation occurs, the goal is to move to action, including determining who does what and when, and how follow-up occurs.

The crucial conversations model used at FVS begins with introspection—including concepts like “getting unstuck,” “starting with heart” and “mastering my stories”—before a conversation starts. Other key questions include: What are my goals for this meeting? What do I hope to gain by having this conversation? Will the person be better off when our interaction has ended?

How will I feel? Do I appreciate the value of this relationship? What are my understanding motives for this interaction?

During the conversation, the goal is to safely explore each other’s paths, creating a pool of shared meaning. There are five steps to help accomplish this:

During the spring 2021 semester, students and faculty put crucial conversation skills to work discussing the topics of toxic masculinity and hypermasculinity and concerns about these issues brought forth by members of the community. Organized by the Deans’ Office, groups met several times throughout the spring, with some of the meetings facilitated by student peer leaders. Kuiper says future plans include speakers and workshops to help broaden understanding.

“When we were looking at the different aspects of DEI, we saw that gender equity was a big piece,” she says. “So we decided to look at the traditional expectations of masculinity, and what parts of those expectations are reinterpreted to become toxic.”

During an all-school advisory, students watched “Breaking Out of the Man Box,” a video by Tony Porter that examines how social norms and traditional images of masculinity can create a toxic environment. The video provided a departure point for discussions facilitated by peer leaders that spanned several subsequent meetings and included both students and faculty.

“It wasn’t an us versus them type of thing, but rather a space to talk through definitions of masculinity, shared experiences and how people have been impacted by that,” Kuiper says, noting that in the weeks following the airing of the video, students began talking about their experiences with other students and faculty.

CRUCIAL CONVERSATIONS SUCCESSES AND CHALLENGES Kuiper says students have shown they want and need these crucial conversations. But there have been several issues that have pushed this initiative from the forefront of the school’s DEI activities.

First of all, COVID quarantines and early releases of students from School this year and last have made face-to-face, personalized conversations difficult. And Kuiper believes there’s a need for more faculty training in moderating or participating in difficult conversations. Training began in earnest during fall 2020 faculty inservice and has continued through DEI faculty cohorts that meet regularly to discuss ongoing work and initiatives, and provide peer support.

“It’s hard for leaders to be vulnerable and acknowledge that they have introspective work to do,” she says. “Faculty are really wanting to do this, but many times they just don’t have the tools. There’s a fear of saying the wrong thing or doing the wrong thing.”

As a result, FVS’s crucial conversation initiative will continue to grow. “Acknowledging where we are is really important. We’re not leaps and bounds ahead of our partner schools; we’re truly just starting and learning,” Kuiper says. “We’re committed and want to move this forward in really authentic and meaningful ways.”

AFFINITY GROUPS HELP BIPOC AND LGBTQ+ STUDENTS FEEL AT HOME Crucial conversations in advisories aren’t the only way FVS is advancing its DEI initiatives. The school also has two affinity groups for BIPOC and LGBTQ+ students in which crucial conversations have been a way of life for years.

The BIPOC group, which was founded five years ago, initially had six members, but has grown. During the 2020 school year, there were as many as 18 Black, Tibetan, Korean, Egyptian, Navajo, Crow, and Latinx students who regularly attended meetings.

The BIPOC group includes weekly themed meetings, like the topic of cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes, and opportunities for students to cook and share their native foods. But sometimes the students just hang out and play games, relishing the opportunity to share life experiences.

Math teacher Jenna Lin, who leads the BIPOC group, said despite being Black, she had never heard of affinity groups until a couple years ago. She went to a National Association of Independent Schools’ People of Color Conference, and there was a session in which different affinity groups could meet.

“It was great to see so many Black teachers and share familial and cultural nuances,” she said. “I am the only Black teacher at FVS, and It was helpful to be able to talk to other teachers of color and share experiences.”

Lin brings the same viewpoints to the FVS BIPOC group. “The meetings are a time to share questions they might have, like ‘Do you think this is happening because I look like this, or I am this?’” she says, noting that these types of questions help build a foundation for people to learn how to have relationships with others who don’t agree with them.

“You can’t accomplish much of anything if you don’t have constructive dialogue. You can only have strong relationships if you have strong communication, strong listening skills and a strong desire to hear others,” she says. “We all have our past experience to grow upon, and they formulate many ideas we have.

The way we view life is based on our preconceived ideas, which are based on our experiences. The only way to change those is to have different experiences, to learn different things.”

Kat Baker, a science and fine arts teacher who recently began leading the LGBTQIA+ affinity group, says students see the group as both a safe space to discuss the events in their lives and a chance to commune with each other. “Sometimes they need to vent, and sometimes they want to discuss opportunities to educate their peers,” she says.

The affinity group, which has five to 10 core student members, meets weekly. It plans activities designed to educate the FVS community about the LGBTQIA+ experience. Members have created events around National Coming Out Day and have spoken during All School presentations. In April, a transgender student spoke to the faculty about their experience, the role that pronouns play in identity and how to best support transgender students. Baker says there are plans for transgender members of the group to share the same message with students as well.

Other future plans include working with the dean’s office on LGBTQIA+ advisory activities, along with including films that are important to the group during movie nights. “The goal is to show LGBTQIA+ movies that are not stereotypical, or have a horrible, sad ending, which is how movies based on real life have been like in the past,” Baker says. “Movies can be a good opportunity to show the LGBTQIA+ experience in a positive light.”

THE RIPPLE EFFECT FVS’s DEI initiatives have not gone unnoticed by alumni. Houston Harte, a graduate of the Class of 1970 who received the School’s Distinguished Casa Serena Society Member Award in 2020, has become increasingly committed to helping younger generations make their world more diverse and less divided—and the work underway at FVS has been a catalyst.

“I’ve been reading about FVS’s work in Crucial Conversations, and the subject is both inspiring and at the same time terrifying,” he says. “I grew up as a rich kid in a small town in Texas, in an almost completely white environment. I always thought I wasn’t a racist.

But I am now faced with the realization that I haven’t lived the life of an anti-racist, but rather as a person of privilege who didn’t realize the continuous pressure people of color endure all day, every day.”

Harte’s DEI awakening has spurred him to dive into books like Just Mercy, a memoir by Bryan Stevenson documenting his work as an attorney for underprivileged clients, and Caste, Isabel Wilkerson’s exploration of unacknowledged racial hierarchy.

“The hardest thing I’ve ever done is come to grips with my privilege, and it’s daunting,” Harte says. “How can we create a more diverse, inclusive society—and make it ultimately comfortable for everybody?”

Harte believes that educating the younger generations is the key to achieving a truly diverse, equitable and inclusive world. And it’s a big reason why Harte and his siblings have focused their philanthropic efforts on DEI goals like education, women’s initiatives, food security and voters’ rights—all with a goal of empowering the next generation to do even more.

“Our family has had a tradition of trying to help in our communities by giving and volunteering. But it hasn’t been directed or designed to impact,” he says. “We are making an effort to bring the next generation along with a more focused approach.”

Despite the efforts he’s already made, when he thinks about the 400-plus years of literal and systemic enslavement of people of color, Harte admits he can feel defeated before he even starts.

“I’m 69 and I don’t think I’ll live long enough to push the rock to the top of the mountain,” he says.

“But I have tremendous faith in the younger generations to both act and educate their peers.

FVS’s efforts in this initiative give me hope, and I want to do what I can to empower others to make a difference as well.”

For the past decade, I’ve been traveling regularly from my home in Santa Fe to Ciudad Juárez, just across the Mexican border from El Paso, Texas. I document conditions on both sides of the border, and also assist humanitarian groups and migrant families seeking asylum in the United States.

I’ve always been an advocate of immigration. As the Colorado Commissioner of Agriculture from 1979 to 1981, I helped bring migrant workers to western Colorado to work in agriculture. Then, as a volunteer attorney in 2004 and 2005, I ran a legal clinic at El Centro Humanitario Para los Trabajadores in Denver and represented migrants with wage claims.

But when I first began traveling to Juárez, immigration wasn’t a major issue. The number of migrants crossing illegally had peaked back in 2000, and began to drop dramatically after 2006. The border wall was a political flashpoint, but few people viewed it as a major, practical problem. Consequently, I focused less on immigration and more on the plight of the Mexican people who lived along the border.

I wanted to document their humanity and heroism in the face of the violence and extreme poverty that had consumed cities like Juárez.

In 2018, however, a huge wave of migrants began surging northward, mostly trying to escape the extraordinary violence in Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador. Many of these immigrants were women with children who were turning themselves in at the border and exercising their legal right to petition for asylum. The fact that they undertook this dangerous, 2,000-mile trip with little money speaks to the horrific conditions they had endured in their home countries.

In response to this crisis, my wife, Sherry, and I began working with La Casa del Migrante in Juárez. This large facility, which provides safety, food, clothing, housing and medical care to hundreds of migrants awaiting asylum hearings with the U.S. government, is run by Javier Calvillo, a dynamic young Catholic priest. Sherry and I also started assisting migrant families who were camped out on Juárez streets, waiting for their hearings.

Previously, migrants who passed their initial asylum screening could enter the U.S. and stay with relatives or sponsors while awaiting their final judicial hearing, which could be months in the future. But under the Remain in Mexico edict, they had to wait in Mexico for that final hearing. Imagine staying in highly dangerous cities like Juárez for months and months with no money, no family and no assistance except for what could be provided by overloaded shelters like La Casa.

As a result, illegal border crossings began to rise again, and Sherry and I started to explore the border wall to see where these crossings took place. Over the years, I’ve learned how important it is to humanize the migrant process. But bringing sanity and reason to the complicated and highly charged issue of immigration will not be easy. Here’s a series of photos that may speak louder than words as to why I think this difficult but rewarding work is so crucial.

Jim began working with local educators and community leaders to help improve the lives of native people in Montana, and in 1997, the Scott family established the Foundation for Community Vitality (FCV), with a focus on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne reservations.

rowing up near Sheridan, Wyoming, Jim Scott ’68 had many Native American neighbors. His family ranch borders the Crow reservation, and to the north is the Northern Cheyenne reservation. Like all of the Scott family members, Jim has lived and worked with people from both reservations, developing close relationships with his native neighbors.

Life changed for Jim when he began attending Fountain Valley School in the mid-1960s. And while the campus prairie resembled his family ranch, the absence of Native Americans made a significant impression on him. After Jim graduated in 1968, he moved to Billings, Montana, on the northern side of the Crow reservation from his family’s ranch. And in the time since, he, and now his children, have worked to engage with tribal peoples in Montana and Wyoming and give back to these communities that have played an important role in his family’s life.

“He saw economic prosperity in the communities around the reservation, and was shocked about the inherent challenges of living on a reservation,” says Jim’s daughter, Courtney Scott ’99. “He realized he could have an impact there and set the intention to make a difference.”

“We are a place-based foundation, so we don’t have a programmatic focus. We’re really specific to the improvement and betterment of sovereignty of the native communities on the reservations,” says Courtney, who serves as FCV board chair and program director. “We’re very trust-based philanthropy and very partnershipdriven. We are a large family that works and governs together, and we see similar beliefs in native communities, where they utilize support and guidance of their relatives.”

Throughout the years, FCV has supported community-development organizations and community-based financial institutions on the reservations. It’s developed a business incubator to bring more jobs directly to the reservations. FCV also supports local food banks and a mobile telehealth unit, and is helping to improve potable water and sanitation initiatives on the reservations.

The foundation is also committed to learning opportunities, and sponsors scholarships for reservation students to attend Fountain Valley School.

“We believe strongly in higher education and promoting excellent educational resources,” Courtney says. “It’s always been our interest to not only help provide access to education for native people at large, but also expose the power and strength of native Montanans. We see it as kind of a mutualism.”

The importance of community FCV’s ties to Fountain Valley are deep. Courtney is a 1999 FVS graduate, and her two siblings, Dana and James, also attended the school. Two of the FCV board members are FVS alumni, and Jim served on the FVS Board of Trustees for many years, and is now one of three life trustees on the board.

“I have such good memories of Fountain Valley,” Courtney says. “I valued the academic rigor and the access to arts and sports. I liked the close-knit, community feel. I liked having more and more sisters and brothers, and a student body that was all family.”

Many Native American reservations have a similar community feel, Courtney says, which can make FVS a good fit for native students. But boarding schools also carry cultural connotations for people who live on reservations.

“It’s still something I struggle with—I think boarding schools have had lasting implications to the native population. It was our intention for the FVS scholarships to be a choice, unlike it was in the early 1900s, when a lot of natives were removed from their reservation and brought to schools around the country,” Courtney says.

Both of these factors influence how Native American students are chosen for the FCV scholarships.

“Native communities are so interconnected— your grandparents, aunts and uncles all live fairly close. So we wanted to make sure it was a decision not only made by the student, but that it was a decision for everyone. We wanted Fountain Valley to be a chosen decision, rather than a decision chosen for the student.”

Finding promising students The FCV board has traditionally taken a hands-off approach to recruiting students for the Fountain Valley scholarships. But in the tight-knit reservation communities, it can be difficult for outsiders to identify students who will thrive at FVS. So the Scotts began introducing members of the FVS community to educators they’ve built relationships with over the years.

“If you’re involved in anything in education, nonprofits, or just live in Montana, you probably know Jim Scott,” says Tyler Moore, FVS’s assistant director of admission.

Moore arrived at FVS in the summer of 2019 and began focusing on the FCV scholarships. He met with Courtney Scott’s mentor, Bonnie SachatelloSawyer, executive director of Hopa Mountain, a nonprofit foundation based in Bozeman, Montana that works to improve the lives of local Native Americans. He also connected with Jael Kampfe, a friend of Jim Scott and president of the nonprofit With Grace & Grit, which works closely with Hopa Mountain.

Moore visited the Wyola School on the Crow reservation, where he met with Bill Yellowtail, a former Montana state senator and longtime friend of FVS, and his wife, Maggie Carlson Yellowtail, an art teacher at the school.

“Maggie was instrumental in introducing me to the Wyola School community, where I met Ja’zell Pease, who had applied to FVS, and has just completed her freshman year,” Moore says. Terry Zee Lee, a Wyola School volunteer and founder of the Billings nonprofit SkyWindWorld, helped Pease take her SSATs and offered other support.

Pease, who is Navajo and Crow and speaks both languages, was a top student at Wyola. She has a strong interest in art and was the only female member of her school’s robotics team. A lifelong leader, she began managing her school’s cross country team in fourth grade, was president of her eighth-grade class, and coordinated after-school activities like bake sales, dances and concessions for sporting events.

Thriving at FVS—and beyond Pease was admitted to FVS for the 2020-21 school year, and received a Scott Family Scholarship.

During the admission process, Pease showed a strong desire to attend a school that’s more academically expansive than the high school on her reservation, as well as her goal of ultimately returning to and giving back to the community from which she came.

“I hope I can gain skills that I can put into helping my community. I can see that there are problems in my community on the reservation, and I’m working on my public speaking and debate skills with the hope I can start the people in the community on the path toward fixing those problems,” Pease says.

Sharing culture Pease is proud of her Crow heritage and throughout the year has taken advantage of opportunities to share her culture with the FVS community.

She and other Native American students shared the tradition of making fry bread through a cooking demonstration in the Campus Center and explained how the bread dates back to the Cherokee Trail of Tears forced relocations in the mid-1800s. Pease also played an important role in the School’s 2021 Unity Day, hosting workshops, and helping introduce the keynote speakers who discussed the Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women Crisis.

Along with discussing her own culture, Pease has also taken the opportunity to learn about the cultures of other students and how to be part of a bigger community.

“My Chapter One group did a project on identity and our character strengths. I saw different backgrounds, saw we all have struggles in life, but also saw how we all agree about working hard and striving to be the best we can be,” Pease says.

I hope I can share the many perspectives about native culture that most people aren’t able to see or hear.

Looking to the future FVS has traditionally had Native American students from the Rocky Mountain West, but the Scott Family Scholarships have helped open a door that allows the School to make the push to bring students in and increase applications from many Native American communities. Not only have the FCV scholarships jump-started applications to FVS from reservations in Montana, but FVS is also garnering interest from Native Americans in other states. “We’re starting to spread out and be known throughout Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas, and I’d like to help native communities understand Fountain Valley,” notes Tyler Moore in looking toward the future.

50s WHITNEY GALBRAITH ’55 “When in 1941, my family, including mother Leila and two siblings, were evacuated from Fort Stotsenberg in the Philippine Islands, we ended up in Colorado Springs at the behest of Boardman and Sally Robinson, the Whitney Galbraith ’55 at the two being my great 2018 book signing for his uncle and aunt autobiographical release of, through my mother “Valley of the Shadow: An Leila Whitney’s line.

Account of American POWs Boardman, known of the Japanese.” as Uncle Mike due to his presumed likeness to Michelangelo, was then the art director of the Colorado Springs Fine Arts Center and art teacher at Fountain Valley School, where his mural and Sermon on the Mount still adorn the walls of First House/ Sage Hall and the Hacienda. With his flaming red hair and association with journalist John Reed, our family would with tongue-in-cheek refer to him as a Bolshevik. He had, of course, accompanied Reed to Tsarist Russia in 1915 and illustrated Reed’s seminal volume, The War in the East. Reed, a profound supporter of the Bolshevik Revolution, was eventually interred at Moscow’s Kremlin.

When the four Galbraiths left the Philippines in 1941, our father, Colonel Nicoll F. Galbraith, U.S. Army, GSC, stayed behind as senior staff officer of General Jonathan M. Wainwright, playing a critical role in the surrender of Bataan and later the island of Corregidor. He was then to spend the remaining three and a half years as a “guest of the Emperor.” We got our father 48

back following Japan’s surrender in August, 1945, when he commenced writing his stunning memoir of his POW years and riveting account of his release and that of Wainwright and fellow POWs at the hands of a six-man OSS team and the Russian Red Army. I self-published that memoir in 2018 and it can be found at www.valleyoftheshadowpow.com. It was wellreceived during the FVS reunion that year when I held a book signing on campus. I remember well becoming a history buff during my three years on the FVS campus, an experience that has served me well over the decades.”

CLINTON CROSS ’57 “I recently joined the board of directors of the El Paso YMCA. I’m also in the process of writing the history of my life. I think it’s a good project even if no one else reads it. I haven’t gotten to the part about Fountain Valley School yet. For a small fee, I’ll say anything the headmaster wants me to say. Along with Colbert Nathaniel Coldwell, I co-wrote a monograph titled: The Saga of Judge Colbert Coldwell 1822-1892, Adventurer, Santa Fe Trader, Supreme Court Justice and Collector of Customs. It was published in August, 2020. At various times during my career, I was a legal aid lawyer, private practitioner, assistant Texas attorney general and assistant El Paso county attorney.”

BOB WOODWORD ’57 “Between home gym workouts (read living room), daily bike rides, and one trip to the grocery store a week, life couldn’t be more exciting. Projects I’m involved in include being a member of an advisory committee working with Oregon State University-Cascades on its outdoor studies programs. Another is documenting, via scrapbooks, my life and career. Highlights of the project so far are finding several old ‘Dear John’ letters. They make for an amusing read!”

ANDREW HERO ’58 “My family is in Houston, which has experienced recurring peaks in the spread and effects of the COVID-19 virus. Our lives are vastly different during the pandemic, as I imagine yours are, too. My primary comment is that we need to have our classmates post class notes, and work to stay in touch. We also should have a class agent so that we can communicate with each other, learn about developments at Fountain Valley School, and support the School through its annual giving program. When I served as class agent, I tried to visit the School annually, which from Texas was sometimes difficult, and to write letters to our classmates.”

LARRY MATTHEWS ’59 “I retired 22 years ago and am currently living in Thailand. I did a tour in Vietnam with the U.S. Navy in 1968, then punched my MBA ticket and spent the next 30 years in the AsiaPacific region with Hallmark and R.J. Reynolds Intl. Never a dull moment, and the adventure continues. I’m rapidly approaching my eighth decade and I am still in reasonably good health.

I reflect often and fondly of my years at FVS. I still keep a house in Colorado and get back annually to visit with sons Nat ’92 and Rob ’96, both FVS grads. I also keep in touch with Dave Slemon ’59, Rich Cross ’59 and Laurie Lasater ’59.”

JAMES ORBAN ’59 “It’s interesting to be approaching 80 next year.

I’ve been fortunate to have been able to live in Colorado Springs since 1948, and still have family in the area. I am blessed by continual learning, and I continue to take care of my patients. I have reasonably good health, have traveled the world leading dental missions, climbed all the 14ers, hiked and camped in many beautiful places in the West, skied in Colorado and Canada, and I continue to travel.

Next year, I’ll give up some of these things and/ or maybe do them differently. Hopefully not masked! To my classmates still with us, I hope you are all well and healthy, and think about supporting FVS in some way. I believe it was the experience at FVS that laid the foundation for my life, though I never would have believed it then.”

60s WILLIAM “BILL” NORMAN ’61 “I am still practicing commercial litigation full time, but COVID has brought on big changes, many of which will likely last for a long time.

For one thing, the courts are overwhelmed and congested, so getting a hearing date to address misbehavior by a party or their lawyers, not to mention a jury trial date, is next to impossible. That makes law practice move even more slowly than ever and leads to a bit more chaos. Most of us, including judges, are working remotely and I even have an ex-partner who is now a judge holding Zoom court from home wearing a tie and pajama bottoms. I do appreciate the extra two hours of what used to be commute time. I can’t go to 24 Hour Fitness anymore, so I jog around the neighborhood, work on a book I am trying to write (21st Century Cosmology) and have fun laughing at jokes from Van Hackett ’61. There are probably more random acts of kindness around, but lessons in humility still abound: the other day I was bragging to my kids that in law school I roomed with one of the original Mouseketeers (who, BTW, had lots of stories about Annette Funicello) and they responded, ‘Awesome, dad, but what is a Mouseketeer?’ I was not sure how or even if to start explaining.”

DUNCAN ALEXANDER ’64 works with a few of the clients of his former horse insurance company, and is part of a group at Ohio State University working to adapt medications that might be helpful to those afflicted with COVID. He and his partner, Kit, have been together more than 30 years.

RICHARD BALLANTINE ’64 is involved in opinion pages’ decisions at the family’s newspaper, The Durango Herald. The newspaper has reduced its print frequency to three days a week, but now has more digital-only subscribers than print subscribers.

Richard still enjoys handling printed pages, and will forever.

WILLIAM “BILL” BISHOP ’64 has residential property management responsibilities in Vail and is looking forward to skiing this season.

He marvels at the soaring real estate prices in and around Vail, saying some home properties have been scraped off a couple of times as new owners want larger and finer homes.

TED MARSTON ’64 lives in Palo Alto and reports he taught a five-week class in electricity to continuing education students at Santa Clara University. Ted had a career as a consultant on nuclear energy, first with a major company, then with a firm of his own.

EDWARD NICHOLS ’64, who retired in 2016 as president and CEO of History Colorado and state preservation officer, is the head of school at the Joshua School, a three-campus institution which serves about 100 autistic students and others with developmental needs.

The school has a staff of 124 at campuses in Denver, Centennial and Boulder. He says that his relationship with the school began as a supporter, but that the work the school was doing had such appeal that he agreed to take a leadership position.

WILLIS WOOD ’64 spent the winter at a resort on Barrier Island along Florida’s Atlantic coast and enjoyed his five grandchildren. He continues to live in Denver.

FRANK “DUSTY” TEAL ’64 has put his name on an apple cider venture in Montezuma County in southwest Colorado, where he and his wife, Martha, nurture an old apple orchard. Through Teal Cider, they are helping resurrect the dozens of heritage apple varieties once grown in Montezuma County, which have almost been lost to narrow commercialization.

ROBERT MAURER ’67 “I recently retired and have been sorting through boxes of accumulated stuff. Among things, I found a box of 35mm slides I took at FVS during my 6th form year and scanned them. They are a pretty good visual record of what it was like to be at FVS that year. I attended my 50th FVS reunion a couple of years ago and in a lot of ways, when I look at these slides, the Fountain Valley experience today seems not that different than when I was there.”

DAN RIGGS ’68 “Despite the obvious trials of 2020, there have been some bright spots! I published my second Amazon eBook, Still Stoked: A Lifetime of

California Surfing and I’ve taken up my artwork again—drawing and painting—which gives me considerable joy. My son is engaged and the prospects of grandchildren are looking promising. On my way from Las Vegas to Raleigh, NC, in an RV, I visited my former FVS roommate, Scotty Rice ’68, and his wife in Albuquerque. I hadn’t seen him for 10 years!

The reunion was a highlight of the year. I renewed acquaintances online with Brent Abel ’67 and other FVS alumni, and that also has been very enjoyable.”

70s “Michael Jardine ’73, Jeb Bennet ’73 and I celebrated our 65th birthdays by meeting up to walk to the bottom of the Grand Canyon and back up. Jeb drove in from Boulder and I drove down from Seattle. Our reunion started off by meeting up in Moab to try to locate the mysterious obelisk, but we got to it about 12 hours too late and it was gone. At the Grand Canyon, Jeb did the standard round-trip of 17 miles and 5,000 vertical feet down and back up, all in one day. Actually he did it in about 8 hours. I did it in about 29 hours, but that included an overnight down at Phantom Ranch, where I enjoyed a small cabin, a full moon, and a steak dinner.”

DONNA (BUGS) SCHOU ’83 “This year, I was selected to participate with 59 other educators from 29 states in the first New York Times Teaching Project. We met for the first time this summer (unfortunately over Zoom and not at their headquarters in NYC as originally planned) to share our expertise and create curriculum projects that will have an impact on not only our students, but also on the communities in which we live. We met several NYT staff and reporters and heard their amazing stories. I’m really excited about my project, ‘My World, My Lens,’ which will help the diverse students in my photography classes explore their worlds and then share them with the school and local community. We are continuing to meet throughout the school year to develop our plans with the support of fellow participants and New York Times staff. BROOKS WOLFE ’87 “COVID-19 has affected me as it has so many others. I’ve been flying Boeing 737s for Alaska Airlines for the past 15 years, and things had been going really well. And then it all stopped.

We put up a good fight—I was flying mostly empty aircraft around the country just to keep our little corner of the economy moving. We transported mail, medical supplies, etc.. But when the market for a service evaporates over night, tough choices need to be made. My airline offered early retirement packages and voluntary leaves in lieu of layoffs. I’m not ready to retire, but I did decide to take a 12-month leave, rather than allow some junior pilot in tighter financial shape to be laid off. So far, it’s actually been a refreshing change. My wife goes off to work for days at a time (she’s a pilot as well), and I’m a stay-at-home dad! No more 3:00 a.m. wakeups on the East Coast or red eye flights for me (for at least the next 11 months).”

MARIANNA RITCHEY ’95 “I’m now a professor of music history at the University of Massachusetts, and my first book, which is a brutal critique of capitalist ideology as it manifests in American classical music, just came out this summer on University Chicago Press. Despite the horrifying nature of what I research and think about all day, I am very happy and truly living the dream in New England, doing all kinds of New England things, such as making my own vinegar, considering getting a goat, and wearing sensible clogs. I live with my husband, Andrew, and our hound dog in a little bungalow that until recently had an attic full of bats. Andrew works at a bookstore, goes birding, does sound design projects, and facilitates our growing interest in playing incredibly complicated board games. We have fun together and are happy. I truly can’t believe it’s been 24 years since high school; I feel simultaneously as though 1,000 years have passed, as well as no time at all. I hope everyone is well!”

KIZZY BAILEY-MARTIN ’97 “I am currently the cultural and change communications lead for one of Georgia’s largest healthcare systems. I lead a communications team that works with hospital leadership to host virtual monthly status updates on hospital operations and reportouts on COVID-19 to our doctors, nurses and team members. At any given time, we have had more than 2,000 doctors and nurses join these monthly status meetings. This photo is of members of my team and me prepping for our next virtual status meeting.”

PRESCOTT PAULIN ’03 “I’m working to support the fight against the COVID-19 crisis through the Defense Innovation Network. We’ve had more than 90 defense leaders speak on various innovation topics, including many that are COVID-19 specific.

We’ve hosted the Harvard National Preparedness Leadership Initiative, a U.S. Congressman, a prior commandant of the Marine Corps, and leaders from all branches.”

TRAVIS TITUS ’03 “I started Titus Adventure Company, an adventure-vehicle rental business in the Denver area, and like many companies, we had to suspend operations in the spring of 2020 due to the pandemic, but business came roaring back in the summer with a surge in demand for people looking to get out on camping trips. We had customers who had never camped before, some who hadn’t camped in years, and some looking to create a special experience including two wedding proposals! I was able to sneak away for a few camping trips, and on one I took my sister, Rebecca Titus Smith ’99, out camping in our vehicles with our two families and parents, including former FVS trustee Jane Titus P ’99, ’03” Thanks Dr. Gilbert and Mr. Gustke for getting me started with all of this during the Outdoor Ed program! STEVE STOOT ’09 “This past year has certainly been an interesting one, and I feel fortunate to have some highlights to share. My wife and I got married in July at Mt. Princeton Hot Springs. My family has a cabin in the area, and I have tons of great memories of the Mountain Campus. Taylor is from Indiana, and I’m lucky that she has fallen in love with the mountains as well! One of my classmates, Blake Deignan ’09, was a groomsman. We live in Waco, Texas, and foresee ourselves staying for at least another five years or so.

Taylor has started her career as a medical lab scientist working in transfusion services at our region’s largest trauma hospital, so her year has been especially hectic. I changed positions at work about eight months ago. I am now a lead test operations engineer in the Dragon and Starship programs for SpaceX. It’s been great learning new things about Starship and seeing Dragon carry people to space after years of development. I am extremely impressed with FVS’s mature response to COVID, putting students first. That’s what I always loved about Fountain Valley!”

Former Faculty CLARA DUFF P ’06, ’08, former director of annual giving and alumni relations, retired after 18 years as an educator and 25 years in fundraising. She says, “By pure coincidence, this was smack at the beginning of the pandemic. Travel plans were replaced with home remodeling, gardening and political activism. My husband, Dave, who retired at the same time, and I enjoy staying connected with fellow Pacific Northwest transplant FVS-ers: John and Brigitte Parra (former theater directors) and Mariclaire Parra ’06, Shari and Bill Griffiths ’61, Eamon and Susan Essex (former faculty), Stephanie Leeper ’07, Kim Bogren Owen ’84, Camille Warren ’98, Andrea De Los Reyes ’97, and of course, our daughters Hannah ’06 and Erin ’08. Erin recently moved here from Texas, putting all us Duffs together here in the PNW. It’s a joy, as well, to be connected to so many Danes on Facebook. We welcome FVS-ers to visit us on our COVID-safe deck here in the beautiful San Juan Islands.”

PAIGE JESCHKE ’14 “I work in marketing for The Orchard Town Center, in Westminster, CO. When COVID-19 forced us to close and cancel our summer events earlier this year, we had to quickly pivot to focus on driving traffic to the shopping center and having safe-distance events. We came up with the idea to do an art walk focusing on positivity and invited artists from the Denver metro area to paint windows at the center. The theme was flower power and the artists were able to describe their work firsthand in an audio tour. Flower Power Art Walk was featured on the morning news and in 303 Magazine.”

ZOIE NOONE ’14 Zoie graduated from the University of Colorado with a major in psychology and a minor in business administration. Along with a partner, she founded Revv Creative Consulting, a digital marketing and branding consulting agency in Denver.

Christopher Richard Lowell—October 11, 1942-July 14, 2020 On Bastille Day of 2020 former FVS French teacher, coach, and theater director Chris Lowell took his final bow. Chris came to FVS in 1973 as the Chair of the Languages Department after teaching in public and private schools in New York and Pennsylvania, directing student plays and acting in community theater. Prior to beginning his teaching career, Chris earned his degrees in French from Dickinson College (A.B.) and Colgate (A.M.).

Although hired primarily to teach French, Chris coached baseball and squash before the programs disbanded, but his primary contribution to the afterschool program at FVS was in directing one student play per year. His first play was the Odd Couple followed by The Crucible and from that point he was off and running, always committed to choosing plays with good scripts written by authors who made “young actors stretch.”

In 1991, ten years before his retirement, Chris explored bringing an ESL program to FVS, recommending that it would “increase the diversity of the student body, promote a more global outlook within the community…and broaden the applicant pool and make FVS more competitive with the 175 NAIS schools that already had such a program.” In the fall of 1992 with Board support, Chris led early work on developing a curriculum and living experience for foreign students that is central to the school’s identity today.

Throughout his teaching career, Chris found time to act in community theater, and among other performances, he earned rave reviews for his work at the University of Colorado Springs’ Theaterworks in productions of Othello and Death of a Salesman in which Chris played Iago and Willie Lomax, respectively. At his retirement, Chris immersed himself in his life-long commitment to community theater and brought “the life, philosophy, wit and accomplishments of Benjamin Franklin to audiences across the United States and France.”

In addition to his “quick wit, easy laugh and embrace of all things cultural,” Chris was a gourmet cook, gardener, beekeeper, beer brewer and, in the 70s, a bus driver for Greyhound. He will be greatly missed by his wife, Sue, his three children, two step-children (including Burt McLucas ’87), nine grandchildren, his many teaching colleagues, and the countless students he mentored in the classroom and on the stage.

Mary Carter Nickerson O’Connor—March 18, 1945-July 20, 2020 Mary Carter Nickerson O’Connor, former FVS faculty member and Director of Admissions, passed away July 20, 2020 at home with her husband, Michael O’Connor, and children, Erik (former FVS faculty 2001-2010) and Kitren Nickerson, at her side.

Mary, a Stanford graduate, was a lifetime competitive equestrian and a true horsewoman, but she also was a teacher and a coach who started her career as such at Fountain Valley in the fall of 1977. Two years earlier the school had followed national trends in going co-ed, and Mary’s initial responsibilities were to “head the girls’ athletic program, teach English and assist Walter Wilson in the Art Department.” In 1978 Mary became the Acting Director of Admissions and a year later she was appointed Director of Admissions. After leaving FVS in 1981, Mary served as Director of Marketing for Admissions at the U.S. Air Force Academy, and Director of the Denver Office of the College Board. She also opened a private consulting practice to help students and their parents navigate the college admissions process.

As David Lavender notes in They Wrote Their Own History, the history of the School’s first 70 years, Mary’s legacy as an admissions director centers on building the Los Angeles merit exam program “into an extremely successful event that brought many outstanding students to the School and gave FVS valuable, ongoing exposure in Southern California” She also “personally interviewed more than 250” admission candidates each year while “coaching three sports, assisting in the riding program” and serving as “a valuable counselor to female students.”

One of those students with whom Mary developed a close friendship is Jacqui Parr ’80 who “remembers that some of her happiest moments at FVS were spent riding bareback with Mary across the prairie at midnight under the moon.”

As an office mate and colleague in the United States Air Force Academy Admissions Department in the late 80s said: Mary “was a knowledgeable and respected member of a unique team, and she could ‘bust chops’ with any of us.” As a friend over the last 30 years, “it was a joy to see her embracing the loves of her life:” her husband Mike, her children, her grandchildren, and her passion for horses and riding. She was a witty, caring and talented friend who will be missed.

The Street Playground Endowment was established by David Street ’61 in 2000 to maintain the faculty children’s playground.

The Hunter and Lynn Frost Fund was established in their memory, dedicated to the building of a future performing arts center.

FACULTY PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT/CONTINUING EDUCATION/AWARDS The Ballantine Family Endowment created by Arthur and Morley Ballantine and continued by their sons Richard ’64 and William ’68 provides annual grants for faculty study and research.

The Robert D. Cole Endowment for Faculty Development was established by the family of the late Robert D. Cole, who was a trustee and parent of David Cole ’86. Through their funding of faculty travel, the Cole family seeks to enrich the experiences that faculty can bring to the classroom.

Birches Foundation The Gates/FVS Teacher Education Fund created by the Gates Family Foundation of Denver provides annual funding of faculty research and independent study.

The J. Philo Nelson Endowment was established by Mr. and Mrs. Peter Bedford, parents of Erik ’89 and R33

grandparents of Owen ’16, in honor of Mrs. Bedford’s father. Annual income is used to provide an award for outstanding teaching to a member of the FVS faculty as selected by the Head of School.

FACULTY SUPPORT The F. Martin Brown Fund for the Teaching of Science honors one of Fountain Valley School’s founding faculty members who served with distinction from 1930 through 1973. Income from the fund provides annual support of teaching salaries in the sciences. The fund was established in 1992 by a gift from Morgan Sinclaire ’35 and his wife, Esther.

The Lane Faculty Family Endowment was established by Nelson and Neecee Lane, parents of Phelps ’98 and Tennessee ’00, and supports the educational fund for children of Fountain Valley School faculty.

The Lewis Perry Endowment was established by numerous friends of Fountain Valley’s third Headmaster.

Annual income is used to support the humanities and endows a teaching chair for a member of the humanities faculty selected by the Head of School.

OPERATIONS The Armour Family Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. A. Watson Armour, parents of Jean ’94 and Molly ’99.

Annual earnings support the School’s Arts program.

The Faculty Fund supports the School’s operations.

The General Trust supports the School’s operations.

PROGRAMS The Gardner Lynch Gordon Carney Restricted Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James H. Carney II in memory of their son, Gardner ’92. The fund supports the Gardner Carney Leadership Institute at Fountain Valley School, which provides training, research and literature on the pedagogy of leadership. The Institute’s annual Leadership Lab takes place each summer at Fountain Valley School, and several FVS faculty have participated in this training.

Brian Scott Chandler ’95 Memorial Fund was established by his parents, Mr. and Mrs. David Chandler ’65, and his brother, Bob Chandler ’88, to support the performing arts and other programs.

Bob ’88 and Stephanie Chandler Michele Chandler P ’88, ’95 The Creeden Endowment Fund for Experiential Learning honors Fountain Valley’s sixth headmaster Dr. Jack Creeden and his wife, Dr. Carole Martin. Income supports students who need assistance to take part in the Interim program.

Carole Martin and Jack Creeden P ’03, ’06 Molly Creeden ’03 and Collin Creighton Peggy Thayer P ’73, ’74 The Deck Cheney Endowment was established in 2007 to sustain the excellence of the riding program in perpetuity. Named in tribute to the legendary riding master who served from 1944 to 1975, the fund’s income supports the riding program, facilities and equipment.

The Dominique Dunne Memorial Fund supports Fountain Valley School’s film competition. It was established by family and friends of Dominique Dunne ’77.

The John W. Emery ’44 Memorial Endowment Fund was established by Jean Jackson Emery in honor of her late husband and father of John W. (Jake) Emery Jr. ’71, in recognition of his lifelong appreciation of music. Annual income supports the promotion of creativity in the School’s music department and benefits one or more students in music.

Jean Emery P ’71 Henry Poor Endowment The Headmaster Henry B. Poor Endowment was created to honor the commitment of Mr. Poor in supporting students of diversity, spirituality and character in order that they have the opportunity to experience a unique, college preparatory education at Fountain Valley School. This endowment fund contributes to the financing of qualified students’ expenses incurred at FVS that are not covered by existing financial aid or the FVS Interim Scholarship Program.

Lew ’57 and Bonnie Watters The Charles Kurchinski Annual Music Competition Endowment Fund was established by Michael Dively to sponsor a student music competition that awards cash prizes to the top three musicians in the vocal and instrumental categories.

School. Income from the fund underwrites the operating expenses of the program and supports the cost of educational exchanges at independent schools in many parts of the world.

Valerie and Jim Webster P ’14 The Rumbough Music Fund was given

by Stanley M. Rumbough Jr. in memory of his son, David ’68. It supports the general activities of the Music Department.

The Frederick von Stade ’42 Music Endowment was created in 2007 by his four daughters in celebration of his 85th birthday. Income from the fund is used to provide support for the music program.

SCHOLARSHIPS AND FINANCIAL AID Bancroft Scholarship Endowment was funded by Christopher Bancroft ’69 and provides annual scholarship awards for deserving students.

The Nicholas McCumber ’71 Visiting Artist Program Endowment supports the Artist-In-Residence Program.

Coach Kardok Scholarship Fund Donald “Coach” Kardok P ’73, ’75, ’77 arrived as a faculty member in the fall of 1969 and from then on he made Fountain Valley School his home. The Kardok Scholarship Fund was established in 2014 with an initial leadership gift from an alumnus/former trustee, along with matched funds from the School’s endowment, to ensure that FVS is within reach for bright and dedicated students who desire to expand their intellectual horizons.

The Round Square Endowment was established in 2016 by Former Trustee Jim and Valerie Webster, parents of Danny ’14. The endowment supports the Round Square program at Fountain Valley

Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship Endowment Established by current and former trustees, the Elizabeth Sage Hare Trustee Scholarship provides a Fountain Valley

The intent is to transform the recipient’s life through the FVS experience. This scholarship honors the extraordinary vision of the School’s founder, Elizabeth Sage Hare, who was determined to establish a great progressive school in the West.

Terry and Henry Morse ’69 General Scholarships Endowment Learning Center Scholarship Endowment The Learning Center Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by an FVS parent to support deserving students who benefit from the Learning Center at Fountain Valley School of Colorado. This scholarship provides opportunities for qualified students to receive study assistance, learning and academic assessment, individualized academic support, tutoring and educational skill development.

The Jane and Charles F. Emery ’38 Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Jane and Chuck Emery. The purpose is to provide financial support to a student who could not otherwise attend Fountain Valley School.

The Scott Family Scholarship Endowment Fund was established by Mr. and Mrs. James R. Scott ’68, parents of James ’95, Courtney ’99 and Dana ’05, to provide scholarship opportunities for Native American students on the Crow and Northern Cheyenne Reservations in Montana, and Native American students who are residents of Montana or the Sheridan, Wyo. area. The goal of the scholarship is to strengthen ties between Fountain Valley School and the Native American communities whose children would benefit from the transformative education that Fountain Valley can provide.

ENDOWMENT GIVING CONTINUED The Sinclaire Endowment was established by Reginald Sinclaire, father of Morgan ’35. The income from the fund is used to provide support for master teachers and for students of exceptional promise who require financial aid to attend FVS. The Henderson Scholarship Endowment established by Robert E. Henderson ’44 provides annual scholarship income.

The Joseph B. Holloway ’70 Memorial Scholarship Fund was established by his friends from the proceeds of a 2000 benefit performance of George Gershwin’s “American Rhapsody” at the Triad Theatre in New York City.

The Pauline C. Li and Samuel C. Li ’84 Student Opportunity Fund was established by Samuel Li ’84 to provide financial aid students help with additional expenses.

Samuel Li ’84 and Pauline Ung The Claire Emma McGregor ’06 Endowed Scholarship Fund was created in 2006 by Joan and Clyde McGregor in honor of their daughter.

Annual earnings provide merit scholarship support for a student at Fountain Valley.

The Theda Clark Smith Endowment was established in 1990 by Tamblin C. Smith ’45. Fund income provides scholarship assistance to students from Wisconsin’s Fox River Valley.

STUDENT RECOGNITION The Hunter Frost Theatre Award Fund was established in 1999 by former headmaster Lewis Perry Jr. and Hoyt Bacon ’69 in honor of Mr. Hunter Frost, Fountain Valley’s performing arts director from 19691982 (also faculty 1949-1952 and 19661982). The award is given each year to an outstanding senior actor.

The Barker Wardrop Memorial Fund was established through an anonymous gift in 1983 in memory of Barker ’72, to be awarded to an FVS tennis player who combines skill with good nature and persistence, qualities for which Barker’s classmates especially remember him.

Francis Zhou ’22, blending into the prairie while photographing wildlife.

Every morning, before the sun shows its face; as the prairie world invokes its first post-slumber stretch; and before the feet of fellow students hit the pavement on their way to class; Francis Zhou ’22, has already been up for two hours.

and skills growing by the day, Francis had developed an impressively vast collection of candid, serene, and astonishingly beautiful imagery of macro and micro life within and around the prairie.

With his camera in hand, he sits motionless and silent in the tall, prairie grass. He blends in, dissolves into, and becomes one with his surroundings, patiently waiting for a picture-perfect opportunity of Mother Nature and her children to unfold in front of him.

In the fall of 2020, Francis realized that the joy he received from these real, authentic moments within our 1,100acre campus should be experienced by more than just himself. Completely on his own and driven solely by his desire to spread joy in a year where it is very much needed, Francis designed, coordinated, and produced a 2020-2021 calendar of his photos, gifting it to the special people who support and inspire his craft here at Fountain Valley—the faculty. The photos seen here are Francis’ favorites that were featured in the calendar.

Francis entered FVS a mere fledgling photography enthusiast with a simple point-and-shoot camera. He then quickly discovered a passion for nature and wildlife photography, transforming him from just a kid with a camera, into a full-fledged artist. With his knowledge
