Limited Edition Writers Series 2011 Montblanc presents the Limited Writers Edition 2011, an intricately crafted piece celebrating the Italian author Carlo Collodi, the creator of Pinocchio, one of literature’s most enduring children’s characters. Collodi’s imaginary story of the wooden puppet in search of boyhood has enchanted generations and has been the subject of numerous adaptations in film, art and theatre. Carlo Collodi, born in Florence in 1826, worked as a librarian, translator, novelist, author, and political writer. Every detail of the limited edition is carefully designed to reflect Collodi’s epic masterpiece. The primary material is a dark-brown precious resin. The book’s colorful characters, including the voracious whale, the loyal cricket, the shady fox, the deceitful cat and the good fairy, are featured on the skeletonised cap overlay. A screw set into the clip symbolizes the joints of the famous marionette, while the cone is reminiscent of Pinocchio’s legendary growing nose. The limitation number and Collodi’s signature adorn the top of the cap, while the cricket on the 18kt champagne-gold nib completes this edition. Limited to: 12,000 piston-fill fountain pens; 14,600 ballpoint pens; 8,400 rollerballs; and 2,000 sets consisting of fountain pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil.

Made of Lava with a Flexible 23kt Dreamtouch Palladium Nib More than 5,000 years ago, with the invention of writing, the pre-history of humankind ceased and the Homo Sapiens marked the dawn of human history. The first great civilizations arose and the development of sciences such as geometry, astronomy and engineering commenced. Conceived for serious writers, the material comprising this pen is as ancient as the world itself: lava from Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy (Europe’s largest active volcano). Nevertheless, it has several extraordinary characteristics that make it unique to and ideal for writing instrument manufacturing. Arte Italiana Woods Collection Madagascar’s Black Violet Wood is an extremely rare and much sought-after wood. It is usually very hard, resistant and with a high porosity. Its colour is deep red, but after the cut it oxidizes to dark-violet and black. Nowadays this kind of wood is used for very special works: from fine cabinet-making to musical instruments. Brazil’s Rose Wood is a precious and very beautiful wood. It is difficult to find, has a compact hardwood and a pale-yellow colour, which heightens with the seasoning, becoming pinkish red. Because of its refined chromatic effects, during the 18th and 19th centuries it was often used by French and English cabinet-makers for inlaid works or veneerings. Even today, being a wood with a difficult carving, it is essentially used for decorative purposes, delicate inlaid works, and precious jewels cases. Both woods are extremely strong, with variations of color and veining, and require the utmost care and expertise in their hand-crafting into fine writing instruments. 250th Anniversary Limited Edition Graf von Faber-Castell is celebrating the 250th anniversary of Faber-Castell with a very special limited edition. This product line consists of a fountain pen, propelling ball pen, rollerball pen and propelling pencil (0.7mm - available in 4 piece set only), with barrels made of cross-grained Olive Wood. A technical innovation has made it possible to bring out the figuring of this wood in a way that was previously unknown. As with marquetry, six individual pieces of cross-grained wood are inlaid in the barrel. Only in that way, polished in several steps and lacquered, does the wood reveal its characteristic exquisite grain and unusual coloring, ranging from hazel to honey. The wood reappears in the end caps of the various writing implements. The fountain pen is enhanced with a magnum-size nib, made of 18-carat bi-color gold, available in M, F, and B widths, cartridge/converter fill. The rollerball contains a jumbo refill, which lasts considerably longer than standard refills. Each pen or pencil comes in a wooden presentation case.

Taking Care of Your Fountain Pen • Use your pen! The ink in a fountain pen flows most smoothly when the pen is used regularly.

• Do not press down hard on the nib when the pen won’t write. Excessive pressure can damage the nib. When a pen does not write well, it is often because the pen needs to be cleaned and refilled.

• Cap the pen properly by placing the cap onto the barrel rather than dropping the barrel into the cap which can result in ink spilling into the cap.

• Write on quality stationery which is neither too absorbent, nor coated (giving a slick writing surface) nor too fibrous (releasing fibers which can clog your pen).

• When traveling by airplane, your pen should be completely full of ink or completely empty. Air trapped in a partially filled ink cartridge or converter can expand with changes in altitude and cause a fountain pen to leak.

• Place the cap on the pen when not in use; otherwise the ink can evaporate or thicken.

• When not in use, a fountain pen containing ink should be stored in an upright position (nib facing the sky). If your pen will not be used for a week or so, it is best to remove the ink and clean the pen with cool water.

• To clean your pen, first empty the ink. Use your converter or built-in filling mechanism to fill and flush the pen with cool water. Repeat several times until the water runs clear. For very clogged pens with built-in filling mechanisms, fill the pen with cool water and let the water sit overnight. Further, leave the uncapped pen soaking overnight in a glass of cool water, nib facing downwards, entirely submerged in the water. If a converter fill, remove the nib and section and allow them to soak in the water overnight. Use a soft cloth to wipe excess water from the nib when drying.

• Follow the manufacturer’s instructions for maintenance of your pen.
