On the cover A Leo Tolstoy Writers Edition 2015 The Writers Edition Leo Tolstoy is paying tribute to one of the most important Russian authors, most famous for his works ‘War & Peace’ and ‘Anna Karenina’. He also became noted as a moral thinker and social reformer, which is reflected in the overall shape of the Writing Instrument. The hammered optic of the silver-plated barrel stands for his hard work in the fields – moving back to a simple life. Blue and grey were not only very present colors in his studio but were also used for his first book covers. The characteristic pillars at the entrance of the Yasnaya Polyana estate are echoed in the shape of the top of the cap, which is crowned with the Montblanc emblem in black and white resin. Tolstoy’s philosophy of working the land with his own hands is symbolized in the elaborately handcrafted, hammered and silver plated case of the barrel. The dark grey precious resin cap, blue marbled resin cone and platinum plated fittings mirror the colors found on the covers of his first major works as well as the colors of the modest study in which he wrote his most important works. The ornament on the cap ring is inspired by a traditional woven Russian pattern that would have adorned the modest peasant smocks Tolstoy made for himself. The great author’s signature is engraved on the cap while the family’s aristocratic coat-of-arms is featured on the rhodium-plated 750 solid gold nib of the fountain pen, a subtle design detail that highlights his provenance and the value he placed on family.

The issue number engraved on the cap is proof of the uniqueness of every piece. The fountain pen version of this edition is limited to 9,000 pieces, and the ballpoint pen to 12,000. The rollerball is limited to 7,000 pieces and the set with fountain pen, ballpoint pen and mechanical pencil is limited to 900 sets.

A Speakeasy Limited Edition Limited Edition of 1000 total fountain pens and rollerballs From 1920 to 1933, Prohibition was a national ban on the sale, production, importation, and transportation of alcoholic beverages. This movement was promoted by conservative groups and other organizations in an attempt to control a variety of perceived social evils such as alcoholism, drug abuse, and gambling. During this era, Speakeasies became a prominent symbol of American culture. Often run by organized crime groups, these secret establishments provided a location for patrons to indulge. To enter, Speakeasies often had a hidden location, passwords, or a special knock. To commemorate this pivotal period in American history, Visconti has created the Limited Edition Speakeasy. The pen, in polychrome celluloid, has a sanitized container inside it that holds a shot of its owner’s favorite liquor. An ingenious rotating mechanism in the section allows the user to rotate a window, which states the type of liquor held in the pen. Limited to 1,000 total pieces, the Speakeasy is available in Fountain Pen and Rollerball. A Grappa Limited Edition Both the historic traditions of the renowned distillate “grappa” — an Italian specialty that nowadays has devotees all over the world, and the aesthetic of steampunk, have inspired and influenced the design of the latest addition to Montegrappa’s Cult collection. This incredible writing instrument also serves as homage to Bassano del Grappa – the town Montegrappa calls home, which is one of the major producers of this refined liquor. As proof of grappa’s ascension to the ranks of chic liquors, many of Italy’s finest wine producers now bottle their own “grappa,” including the “Super Tuscans” Sassicaia and Tignanello. Previously unimaginable, grappa is now as complex a subject as wine. The materials used in the pens’ manufacture, reminiscent of the distilling vessels, include stainless steel, brass and copper for the cap and barrel, employed in the manner of the actual equipment’s construction. Montegrappa’s technicians executed hand-applied hammering techniques on the copper components, while tiny screws – both functional and ornamental – remind the user of the technological inspiration of the product. Even the pocket clip continues the grappa-making theme, formed to recall the copper tubing used in the distilling process. Inserted into the top of the cap is a disc made of real cork as used in a grappa bottle top, beneath a filigree-cut octagonal grid recalling Montegrappa’s eight-sided symbol. Having been dipped in aged grappa, the cork emanates scents of grappa. Lastly, the 18kt gold duotone nib is embellished with a bunch of grapes on the vine. Production is limited to 1912 pieces for the fountain pen, with both cartridge and converter feeders (included), and 1912 for the rollerball, the given number denotes the year of establishment of the Montegrappa company. Embracing the spirit of grappa and its life-enhancing properties, the Grappa Pens arrive in special packaging not unlike the presentation of an actual bottle of the liquor.
