ON THE COVER A Wild West Limited Edition of 388 Pens Visconti’s latest creation pays homage to the Wild West, a pen recalling the ideals of freedom and liberty of the Frontier. Enormous popular attention in the media focuses on the Western United States in the second half of the 19th century, a period sometimes called the Old West, or the Wild West, frequently exaggerating the romance and violence of the period. Frontier history tells the story of the creation and defense of communities, the use of the land, development of markets, and the formation of states… a tale of conquest, but also survival, the merging of cultures, the establishment of law and order; and expansion from coast to coast, fulfilling the dream of Manifest Destiny. The image of the cowboy with his Colt 45 held aloft, riding through the prairie on his horse, has been seen in many Western movies and is the real spirit of the Frontier. Visconti replicates this image on the barrel of the pen using their sophisticated scrimshaw technique. The leather overlay is hot embossed like a cowboy’s saddle and boots, and all trim is made of aged sterling silver and is appropriately ornate. The blind cap features two Colt rifles crossing; the pen’s plunger reveals the sheriff star.

The pen is packaged in a special collector’s edition box made from American walnut wood. The top of the box is made from the same leather as the pen. Available in Fountain Pen with 23kt palladium nib, available in M, F, XF, B, BB, and 1.3mm stub width and fills via the Visconti power filler. The collection is completed with a matching rollerball.

Pininfarina Iridium Limited Edition of 388 Pens

Once again Visconti introduces a significant innovation to pen manufacture, called Iridium. Iridescence is the physical phenomena that in certain material, based on the angle of view, the color changes following the visible spectrum. Iridescence recalls the rainbow but it also recalls water bubbles or butterfly wings.

The movement of the pen and its retractable nib, that evolved in the second edition of Pininfarina with magnetic parts, is a masterpiece of micro-mechanics compared often to a watch’s mechanical movement. With Pininfarina Iridium, Visconti has created in metal the same color effect of the rainbow with a superior resistance to scratches! The fountain pen is enhanced with a Chromium 18 Smartouch tubular nib available in M, F, XF, B, and Stub widths and fills via cartridge or the included converter. The Pininfarina Iridium is limited to just 188 pieces.

Visconti has once again teamed with Pininfarina, famous above all for designing cars such as Ferrari and Maserati. The pen itself is made from unidirectional blue carbon graphite, a material often used in the automotive sector, matched together with yellow gold colored trim. The Pininfarina team has created a design whose salient feature is its purity combined with a successful mix of dynamism and elegant lines, set off by Visconti’s technical expertise. The innovative technical features that emphasize its style include the rotating nib extraction mechanism, which made it possible to eliminate the cap, and the mechanism incorporated in the clip. Additionally the airtight system that opens and closes automatically, the chromium 18 Smartouch tubular nib and the unidirectional carbon graphite material itself, which gives the pen a perfect weight, with overtones of Pininfarina’s automotive activities and a touch of sporty elegance. Great attention was paid also to the case, which echoes the pen’s retractable mechanism that is, in turn, a display case which not only holds the fountain pen, but also has all the makings of a fully-fledged work of modern sculpture. The Watermark is a pen that demonstrates one of Visconti’s greatest skills, the artisanal craftsmanship of the cut out filigree, an ability to achieve intricate details with absolute precision. Visconti began crafting filigrees back in 1993 with the launch of the Visconti Uffizi and over the years refined and improved the technique with pens like the Skeleton and the Ripple. This new creation recalls the Visconti logo like paper filigree, repeating the logo along the body and cap of the pen.

The design of the pen identifies strongly with the Visconti brand, much like a watermark serves as an identification pattern in paper. The filigree is cut from a solid tube of sterling silver and requires over 20 manual operations to reach the final status. The Watermark Demonstrator is available in rollerball or fountain pen and limited to 888 pieces. The fountain pen features the patented Visconti Double Reservoir Power Filler, a unique filling system that allows a greater ink capacity and safe usage during air flights. The Visconti demonstrator collection based on the shape and size of the Homo Sapiens is widened with a new finish, London Fog. The barrel of the pen features ribbons of finely shaved blue celluloid suspended in clear acrylic resin while the cap and plunger feature the same shaved celluloid suspended in a marbleized silver resin. Visconti once again collaborates with one of the world’s most renowned automotive designers - Pininfarina. They are famous above all for designing cars such as Ferrari and Maserati. The new Visconti Disegno takes inspiration from the very successful limited edition which the two brands developed together, retaining the dynamic styling of the original models but re-engineered to standard dimensions, making it ideal for everyday use: versatile and lightweight with a simple filling system to facilitate daily writing. The pen barrel is made from resin and has been launched in two colors; classic black and the famous Ferrari Red, recalling Pininfarina’s past collaborations with Ferrari. Manhattan Magma Limited Edition

New York City has always been a fountain of inspiration for Visconti. In 1994, Visconti created a pen inspired by Manhattan, with the characteristic shape of many of the city’s skyscrapers’ stepped appearance, in a material reminiscent of the skyline’s glittery appearance at night. Visconti’s Wall Street collection, created in 2003, was likewise inspired in part by the shape of the Financial District’s iconic buildings. After more than 20 years, in an era of great stylistic makeover, Visconti offers a new interpretation of its original project, with a realization of forms and stylistic focus. Like the 1990’s Manhattan, which was a very classic form, the new Manhattan Magma has acquired freshness through the addition of palladium appointments and the repeated steps pattern appearing on all the metallic parts. The black and orange resin body recalls magma coming out of a volcano, another symbol of Visconti. The fountain pen is enhanced with Visconti’s 23kt Palladium nib, available in in M, F, XF, and B widths, and fills only from a bottle via Visconti’s High Vacuum Power Filler. Made of Lava with a Flexible 23kt Dreamtouch Palladium Nib More than 5,000 years ago, with the invention of writing, the pre-history of humankind ceased and the Homo Sapiens marked the dawn of human history. The first great civilizations arose and the development of sciences such as geometry, astronomy and engineering commenced. Conceived for serious writers, the material comprising this pen is as ancient as the world itself: lava from Mount Etna in Sicily, Italy (Europe’s largest active volcano). Nevertheless, it has several characteristics that make it unique and ideal for writing instrument manufacturing. Visconti has produced a material containing over 50% of pure basaltic lava, catalysed together with resin in a patented formula. A Pair of Shoes Art historians believe that Van Gogh came across a pair of worn-out shoes in a flea market and took them back to his studio and as a result, they have become “the most celebrated footwear in the history of modern art”. Montegrappa has spent its 104-year span in the heart of grappa country. But before there can be grappa, there must be wine, one of Italy’s proudest creations. Made from the oak timber used in wine barrels, with stainless steel metalwork, representing the hardware associated with winemaking, the new Tirebouchon pen reflects the materials associated with traditional wine-making.

“Tirebouchon” is French for “corkscrew,” and appropriately pays homage to the origins of the grapes that comprise many of the socalled “Super Tuscans”: wines grown in Tuscany but using French varietals associated with the great Bordeaux, along with Sangiovese grapes. The pen barrel and the cap are wine-barrel-shaped, with metal rings to represent those bands that hold the wooden staves in place. The sterling silver pocket clip evokes clusters of grapes on the vine. Inset into the cap’s top is an engraving of a grape leaf.

The foreign minister of the Weimar Republic, Gustav Stresemann (1879-1929), was honored with the Nobel Prize for Peace in 1926 for his reconciliatory work between nations after World War I. Besides his impressive political career, Stresemann also became famous for the creation of a new kind of suit with thin stripes that was still sufficiently formal for official presentations and yet comfortable enough for his work at the office. A legend developed… and people began to call the striped Pelikan fountain pens of that era “Stresemann.” Both the suits and the pens still carry that name to this day.

To honor this legend, Pelikan has named this latest addition to the standard collection, the Souveran with elegant stripes in anthracite, the “Stresemann.” The barrel with the deceptively simple anthracite stripes is made of cellulose acetate, using a traditional process that’s extremely labor- intensive. Mark Twain Chased Crescent Collection Conklin created the Mark Twain Crescent Filler Fountain Pen as a replica of the original Crescent Filler fountain pen used and promoted by Mark Twain in the early 1900s. The Crescent Filler is known for its easy-to-fill reservoir. To fill the pen, simply submerge the nib in the ink bottle; press the crescent on the barrel to depress the rubber bladder inside; as the crescent is released, ink flows into the bladder. Conklin fitted the Crescent with a two-tone steel nib featuring a corresponding crescent shaped breathing hole, available in M, F and Stub (single tone) widths. Rich gold plating adds a bit of elegance to the clip and band engraved with the Conklin logo.

Mark Twain Crescent Demonstrators One thing Twain would not have envisioned, given the technology of the era, was a crystal clear pen where you could see the filling mechanism in action and watch as the ink filled the "stomach." To achieve this feat, many technical hurdles had to be overcome.

Taking Care of Your Fountain Pen • Use your pen! The ink in a fountain pen flows most smoothly when the pen is used regularly.

• Do not press down hard on the nib when the pen won’t write. Excessive pressure can damage the nib. When a pen does not write well, it is often because the pen needs to be cleaned and refilled.

• Cap the pen properly by placing the cap onto the barrel rather than dropping the barrel into the cap which can result in ink spilling into the cap.

• Write on quality stationery which is neither too absorbent, nor coated (giving a slick writing surface) nor too fibrous (releasing fibers which can clog your pen).

• When traveling by airplane, your pen should be completely full of ink or completely empty. Air trapped in a partially filled ink cartridge or converter can expand with changes in altitude and cause a fountain pen to leak.

• Place the cap on the pen when not in use; otherwise the ink can evaporate or thicken.

• When not in use, a fountain pen containing ink should be stored in an upright position (nib facing the sky). If your pen will not be used for a week or so, it is best to remove the ink and clean the pen with cool water.

• To clean your pen, first empty the ink. Use your converter or built-in filling mechanism to fill and flush the pen with cool water. Repeat several times until the water runs clear. For very clogged pens with built-in filling mechanisms, fill the pen with cool water and let the water sit overnight. Further, leave the uncapped pen soaking overnight in a glass of cool water, nib facing downwards, entirely submerged in the water. If a converter fill, remove the nib/grip section unit and allow it to soak in the water overnight. Use a soft cloth to wipe excess water from the nib when drying.
