The Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills (SCFH) is a volunteer-led nonprofit that works to protect and promote some of our community’s favorite outdoor spaces — the Fountain Hills McDowell Mountain Preserve, the Desert Botanical Garden, and the Lake Overlook Trail. SCFH is supported by donations from people like you who care about keeping these natural areas beautiful and accessible
Explore the Sonoran Desert’s nocturnal world through guided experiences that blend natural history with stargazing. Night Sky Tourist collaborates with the Sonoran Conservancy of Fountain Hills to offer four unique spring programs under our exceptional dark skies. These free events combine desert ecology insights with night sky connections, but space is limited, and registration is required.

Desert Twilight Writing Workshop
April 1, 6:00 pm
Join Vicky Derksen of Night Sky Tourist in the Sonoran Desert for a writing experience as day transitions to night. Participants will gather before sunset to capture the desert's shift from daylight into darkness. Through guided writing exercises, you'll work with the sounds, smells, textures, and changing light of twilight - that brief window when the landscape and sky transform. This isn't a traditional workshop. There's no instruction on craft or technique. Instead, the desert itself provides the prompts. You'll write in response to what's happening around you, then share with the group for feedback if you choose. As darkness settles and writing becomes impossible, we'll shift to stargazing and constellation stories, connecting the land beneath us to the sky above, a tradition that humans have followed for thousands of years. No writing experience required. Just bring curiosity and a willingness to pay attention to a landscape most people rush through.

It all started on St. Patrick’s Day in 1978 when a young homebuilder rode his horse into a local tavern to celebrate St. Patrick’s Day and his heritage. So, what could top such a stunt? How about a bet to turn the town’s fountain green, water ski around the fountain, and who doesn’t show up is out $250! So, on St. Patrick’s Day 1979, with a large crowd watching from shore, the world-famous fountain in Fountain Hills was dyed green, and all the bettors skied around the fountain as planned, except for one. He couldn’t get up on the skis.
Now, 48 years later, what started as a bet in a bar has become the annual Greening of the Fountain in Fountain Hills on St. Patrick’s Day. On Sunday, March 17, 2026, at 12 pm the fountain will flow emerald green. The fountain will be bathed in green light when the sun sets to continue the tradition.
