A look back at 2020

Hindsight is 20/20 they say…..

Boy, Oh Boy have we had a lot of time to reflect on the year that changed us all! We started off the year full of excitement, then we cried, we learned, we cried some more, and we grew…mostly in ways we didn’t know we needed to! As I look back I am happy with the decisions we made and the changes that came along with this. Although this year was a bit of a shit show (just keeping it real!) I know for certain I am grateful. For the first time in Found’s history I was able (forced!) to slow down, take a step back, and really allow myself the opportunity to analyze Found.

I am grateful for the perspective that has come from this.

I am grateful for the new outlook of the future, and I am grateful for all the little things in life. The following pages include the journey through 2020 and an inside look on how we found this gratitude….

We celebrated 10 years in business!!!

We celebrated our 10 year anniversary and we are so very proud of the growth we have had over those years. We also know that none of this would have been possible without our amazing team and all of you supporting us along the way.

March

We were gearing up for another busy month, lots of new inventory, and we sent out our 3rd printed catalogue for the year.

March 13th ….a day I don’t like to revisit. The severity of

the situation for the event industry hit hard and without warning.

Literally, our Nor Cal Team was at a delivery in San Francisco and the Mayor arrived. He locked the doors to the building, sent everyone away, and canceled the event. This was the rude awakening to our new reality.

As the shutdown went into affect our phones started ringing off the hook and our inboxes were flooded with cancellations and postponements. It was unreal. Truly unimaginable. Joel and I made the hard decision to furlough our 70 + crew members with optimism that they would be back to work in no time! My goodness, how naive we were. Our management and sales team spent the next few weeks adjusting to working at home all while handling the cancelations and navigating our client relations. We were learning as we went and evolving as the pandemic did.

There were days more difficult than others, but through it all we stayed true to our mission statement: Work Hard. Do Good. Make People Happy. What the work looked like was different, but doing it at 1 10% remained the same. Doing good came easy! Our top priority has always been our crew members and customers and this never steered us differently. Making people happy had it’s challenges and during this trying time, all we could do was lessen the heartache of adjusting the plans of one of the most important days of their lives by being helpful and flexible.. Happiness that we were healthy, that we weren’t in this alone, and that we knew this was only a bump in the road.

As our bustling warehouse was now quiet and dark there was sadness in realizing this was the new normal. We refused to cave and instead started shifting how the following days would look….

We were optimistic that things were going to turn around quickly, so we continued working on new look books and releasing new products.

October proved to hold the most difficult decision of 2020‌ closing our showroom in Emeryville.

Although it had sat empty since March, keeping keys in hand, and knowing there was some Found beauty still in the Bay allowed me to hold on to my optimism. It was sad to say goodbye to this beautiful space, but I have peace knowing we will open new doors in N.Cal just as soon we are able! And no doubt the next location will be more beautiful, and even more full of amazing inventory!

I was extremely fortunate to design two separate homes...in Nashville and Florida! These were not staging jobs, but homes clients would be living in. Not being able to travel to see these spaces in person the pressure (and challenge!) was on! I created a lot of custom items, sourced high and low, and at the end sent two full containers across the country. I still can’t believe I never visited these homes‌it’s truly is amazing what can be done through emails, text messages and phone calls!

Although 2021 is facing the same challenges as 2020, I am confident that the future is going to brighter than ever. I believe the events industry is going to come out of this stronger!
