My way “After world war two there were ten deep-sea sailing ships without engines in the world. Most of them were four-mast barques, built to cope with the Southern Ocean’s sea lanes, the harshest in the world. They all had steel hulls and almost 4,000 square metres of canvas. A few decades earlier, their number had been 345.

“So, on the afterdeck of the Gloria, the Star Clipper idea was born. I make up my mind to build a large sailing ship, a ship whose main driving force is the wind. No-one had created anything like it for almost a hundred years. Her hull, her rigging and and her movements in the sea would be those of an old clipper, but the ship would be capable of hosting around a hundred guests. In my clipper, I wanted to include all the romance, luxury, comfort and style of sailing found in my Gloria. Inside there would be softly lacquered reddish-brown mahogany and brass with a warm lustre.”

Only one of them was at sea on 13 January 1946, the day of my birth. It was Dad’s idea to give me a boat of I´m ten years old and this is my first small my own as a young boy. It was 1956 sailing boat. and I was ten years old. My father was born in Gothenburg on the Swedish west coast but he was no yachtsman. Still, he decided that I should have a boat of my own, like my classmates. But he was strict about getting me a safe boat, like those that are used on the west coast.”

“Mikael, Mikael,’ he said. ‘Can you help us take in the flying jib, I’m a bit short-handed, because some of the crew are helping on one of the racing yachts.’ ‘Sure,’ I said, and asked my four friends at the table if they wanted to come along. ‘Certainly,’ they said. ‘No problem.’ So we went up to the sundeck and out on the bowsprit to take in and make fast the flying jib, the foremost foresail. The wind was light, and it didn’t take many minutes. When we were back at our bar table, I asked if I could thank them by inviting them for a glass of champagne. No one declined. The conversation went on, until the dry cleaner from Chicago slapped the well-dressed woman on her back and said in a loud voice. ‘Mikael, Mikael. This woman’s crazy! She tells me she’s a princess!’

Sailing ships bring people together, I thought, remembering a quote from the author and traveller Robert Louis Stevenson. ‘We are all travellers in the wilderness of this world, and the best we can find in our travels is an honest friend.’ Of course I knew who the young lady was, she was in fact a princess.
