With the vast majority of Europe accessible within a three-hour flight from the UK, contrasts of cities, lakes, mountains and historical sites are closer than you may think. A weekend at a beer festival with friends, a romantic city break, a family jaunt in the mountains or a relaxation retreat, opportunities are endless. Whilst we have an understanding that everyone has a budget, it is common that some travellers sacrifice convenience for cost. Although cheaper when making a reservation, that three hour shared coach journey isn’t as appealing when you arrive. This is something that Fred.\ Holidays considers carefully when crafting holiday experiences. After all, value is more important than price. Within this brochure you will find a selection of tailor-made holidays all of which can be adapted to your preferred requirements. In addition to this we have featured a selection of Escorted Holidays which will give you that additional in depth holiday experience.

Financial Security For your peace of mind – In addition to being a part of one of the UK’s most established travel companies, Fred.\ Holidays is ABTA and ATOL bonded ensuring that you are financially protected in the event of unforeseen circumstances.

Austria

This central European delight should definitely be on your travel list if you have a sweet tooth. Referred to as the capital of cake, every road and square is home to a bakery, and every bakery is home to indulgent pastries, petit fours and, of course, Sachertorte. This penchant for the sugary things in life goes well with the unique café culture found in the country’s coffee houses.

With the Alps stretching across a large part of the country, Austria can offer breathtaking scenery, fantastic ski resorts and numerous walking opportunities. One such route, The Eagle Walk, is known for showcasing some of the best views of the Tirolean Mountains on a 250-mile trek that is split into 33 different stages.

Add to all this the fact that Austria is easy to reach, very safe and one of the most liveable countries in the world, and you’ll start to wonder why you need to go anywhere else.

As a country that likes to take advantage of the great outdoors, there are many adventurous activities to try whilst you are here. The ski slopes are usually quieter and more inexpensive than those found elsewhere in the Europe and the summer months have their fair share of thrills too. This can include anything from cycling along the stunning Danube Cycle Path to white water rafting. Away from the peaks, there is plenty of art and culture to be found in the cities. The capital, Vienna, will wow you with resplendent palaces and remarkable opera performances, whilst Linz brings everything into the 21st century with its ultra-modern electronic arts venue. Meanwhile, in the smaller villages, you can wander along streets lined with multi-coloured houses and learn about trades which Austria once relied on, such as salt mining.

Czech Republic

Teplice Karlovy Vary

Prague Pilsen

Pardubice

Brno Český Krumlov The world may be taking its time to come around to the Czech Republic rebranding itself as Czechia, but this is definitely a country that needs no marketing ploy. Full of tradition, history and stunning architecture, there is always something to catch your eye or intrigue your brain. Many people start with Prague and this is certainly the ideal place to begin your love affair. Known for its iconic Charles Bridge and dramatic castle, the capital’s cobbles will charm even the glummest of visitors. And even if you aren’t immediately won over, you’re bound to be after a few swigs of what many people say is the best beer in the world. Pilsner and Budvar may be the names we all know well but there are just as many unfamiliar local brews waiting to be discovered. The quirky museums and engaging public art will leave you wondering what you might find around the next corner and, if you lose your bearings in the maze-like Old Town, you may be turning that same corner over and over again.

12

Ostrava Olomouc Zlin

However, as spellbinding as Prague may be, there is so much more to see elsewhere in this fantastic country. Other historical destinations include medieval Ceský Krumlov and Renaissance Telc – both of which boast UNESCO-listed city centres to explore. Meanwhile, in the region of Moravia, pavement beer terraces are swapped for rolling vineyards, giving you a chance to tour the various estates with your wine glass at the ready. In general, a trip to somewhere outside of the capital means fewer crowds and a more authentic experience. Nowhere is this more apparent than in Strážnice. Here, and elsewhere in Moravia and Southern Bohemia, summer is punctuated with local festivals that bring the folklore of yesterday to life. Proud Czechs don traditional costumes to perform centuries-old dances and tell stories that have been passed down from generation to generation.

Switzerland Switzerland boasts some of the most breathtaking natural scenery in the world. Its serene lakes and commanding peaks can provide a mixture of adrenaline-filled outdoor adventures and relaxing breaks on which you can reconnect with yourself and the loved ones around you. Whether it’s a cable car ride to the top of Mount Titlis or a gentle cruise across the calm waters of Lake Geneva, this peaceful nation has so much to offer. Whilst the lakes and mountains are perfect for extreme sports and leisurely hikes, the major cities of Switzerland are ideal for a short city break. Destinations such as Lucerne, Geneva, Bern and Zürich are all home to fantastic cultural activities, Swiss delicacies and a laid-back way of life. As you walk through the quiet streets, you’ll be greeted by smiling faces, plenty of opportunities to shop, and numerous cafés and restaurants in which to grab an indulgent fondue or some of the worldfamous chocolates. What’s more, many of the major Swiss cities offer free transport for anybody staying in a local hotel. This makes travelling from one place to another really easy and, with the trains running as meticulously as the country’s timepieces, getting around is practically seamless. As a year-round destination, Switzerland can be a great holiday choice in summer or winter. When the sun comes out, people head to the banks of the lakes to cool off and enjoy a freshly caught feast, whilst the winter months bring ski enthusiasts to the Alps and give you an excuse to explore a museum or two (as if you needed one). Consistently ranked as one of the happiest and most liveable countries in the world, the people of Switzerland have power over any laws passed in parliament. However, they are unlikely to oppose the social rules that help to maintain peace and quiet every Sunday.
