Bremen Lying at one end of the German Fairytale Route, the streets of Bremen are filled with stories, myths and legends. From the iconic Bremen Town Musicians (a donkey, dog, cat and rooster depicted on each other’s shoulders) to a fountain based on Seven Lazy Brothers, there is a whimsical nature to many of the sights. There’s nothing fictional about the sheer beauty of the buildings on the Marktplatz, though. Another of Germany’s proud maritime cities, this former Hanseatic city still displays its links to the sea. Whether it’s in the form of the interesting Maritime Museum or the soothing, wave-like shape of the Elbphilharmonie, water has influenced things in more ways than one. The only city outside Liverpool to have major ties with the Beatles is also keen on its classical music. The aforementioned concert hall continues a legacy started by melodic names like Mendelssohn, Brahms and Mahler.

Düsseldorf Many German cities beckon travellers with traditional breweries and unique beers, but no other can lay claim to being ‘the longest bar in the world’. That is the moniker given to Düsseldorf’s Old Town, where modern wine bars sit side by side with dimly lit pubs in which you can try the local altbier. Don’t overdo it, though, or you may struggle to appreciate the rest of the city’s beauty in the form of quirky design features (both above and below ground) and fantastic art galleries.

Much of life is played out on the banks of the Rhine here, including romantic strolls and sightseeing cycle rides.

Dortmund is very proud of the industrial heritage that took the city to where it is today. Former steelworks, coal mines and breweries have been regenerated to help tell this story whilst also offering modern attractions for today’s visitors to enjoy. The shining example of this is the interesting ZecheZollern colliery on the outskirts of town. Don’t worry, though, many breweries also still stand, producing a range of tipples for Dortmund and international drinkers.
