Olsen’s Black Prince which have all now passed into the history books. A Rather Special Encounter in Croatia's Dalmatia Region
I rarely chat to people sitting next to me on an aeroplane. Usually I am too absorbed with my own holiday plans. And yet, soon after the lady started talking to me, I realised that this was different. She was very friendly and talk flowed effortlessly between us. Anna was travelling to Split with her husband and their two teenage boys and, like me, she too had fallen in love with Croatia. This was to be her third holiday there. I had lost count of how many times I had revisited this amazing country, the beautiful Adriatic coast and islands (fortunately my partner sees the attraction too!). By coincidence, we would all be in Split in one week’s time so we swapped mobile numbers and agreed to meet up at the end and compare notes so to speak. Her crowd were going to join one of the many casual cruisers plying the gorgeous Dalmatian coast and islands for a week’s real chill out treat with lots of sea, swimming and sunbathing. I couldn’t believe it when Anna mentioned the “Agape Rose” – this was the very cruiser that we had travelled on last year, in late September minus the peak season crowds. We had loved it but inwardly, I winced, wondering if her sons (aged 14 and 16) might be bored to tears. Most visitors seem to head south of Split but we had previously done that and had decided to discover the coast to the north of Croatia’s second city using a hire car. Our plans included Sibenik with it’s UNESCO listed Cathedral of St James and St Nicholas Fortress. Stephen, my partner, fancies himself as something of a gourmet and had noticed that Croatia’s second Michelin star restaurant, “Peligrini”, was right there; he had already made a reservation (the first Michelin star eaterie is Monte in Rovinj, in the Istria region). We would then head north, passing through the (hopefully unspoilt) seaside towns of Vodice and Biograd na Moru, before reaching Zadar where we would turn inland and start our journey back to Split via a stop at the famous waterfalls of Krka National Park.

Sibenik was a delight with its beautiful old city founded in the 10th century, we spent several hours at the UNESCO sites and my partner raved (I mean really raved - which is unusual for men) about the food in Pelegrini, with superb levels of cuisine and service. From our next base in Vodice, and bearing picnics, we took the local ferry to the islands of Zlarin and Prvic where we found pretty coves to ourselves. The Hotel Olympia Sky where we stayed was brand sparkling new, resembled a cruise ship in design, had huge rooms and a rooftop a la carte restaurant which Stephen did not want to leave. But we did and found some wonderful little beach bistros offering great value for money. The incredibly named Biograd na Moru (Biograd on Sea) was another find with a hidden old town of twisting narrow streets, artists’ studios-galleries and simple wine bars. We loved them both. And so to Zadar where the blend of contemporary chic sits alongside Roman relics and the extensive city walls which also gained UNESCO status in 2017. We loved that too. Fast-forward seven days and we met up, as planned, with Anna and family in Bokeria restaurant in Split’s old town. Waiters there regaled us about how the cast of the new ‘Mamma Mia’ film favoured the place when passing through Split on their way to film on the island of Vis which was doubling for the Greek island from the original film. “Oh yes, Colin Firth, Meryl Streep, Julie Walters, Pierce Brosnan and others - they were all here – several times” boomed Davor the owner. Had Anna’s boys been bored? On the contrary, they had loved the swimming and diving opportunities and the chance to wander off in the evenings away from their parents in places that were safe yet ultimately “very cool” (their words). When I told Anna about our finds, she grabbed her notebook and, delightfully old fashionedly, said “Julia, can you write it all down for next year please”.

My first ever day at sea was nothing like I expected and a good experience that I won’t forget! I would definitely recommend this trip. St. Petersburg is such an amazing place and spending two days there gives you a great opportunity to see most of the main attractions – and they are definitely worth seeing.

Sauerbraten, Germany Germany is known for its hearty dishes that turn humble ingredients into flavourful meals. One such example is sauerbraten, which could be described as the country’s take on a Sunday roast. Beef is marinated in a mixture of onions, cloves, vinegar, bay leaves and water for around 48 hours before being cooked low and slow for 4 hours. A gravy made from gingersnap biscuits and the marinade is then poured over the top to help give the dish that recognisable sour taste. It’s usually served with potato dumplings and a healthy portion of red cabbage.

Look where e've been! w Venturing To Venice
I got the chance to travel to Venice and returned via the iconic Orient Express. Our trip included virtually everything. We had a guided tour of the Doges Palace; a visit to the island of Murano, where we had a private demonstration of glass blowing; and then a trip to the island of Burano. The buildings are all painted in bright colours and the island has a lovely feel to it! Perfect for celebrating special occasions.
Classical Rhine We sampled the delights of the Amadeus Silver II from Basel to Amsterdam. We loved Strasbourg with its magnificent cathedral and the historic area of “Petit France”, and Rudesheim, the beautiful town on the banks of the Rhine famous for the mechanical music cabinet museum and the pretty “Drosselgasse”. A river cruise is truly a stunning way to experience these wonderful destinations. The food, wine and service were first-class and totally exceeded all of my expectations.

Sampling Symphony of the Seas I was lucky enough to be one of the first to sail on board the brand new Symphony of the Seas! I struggle to sit still for too long and this place is perfect for someone like me as there is plenty to do – lots of options and variety. The Aqua Nation show was seriously impressive. The high dives were dizzying and there was a moment when two men walked on a tightrope high above the venue. I also enjoyed the Hairspray show in the theatre. The quality of performance was great; they had some really talented singers and dancers. I would recommend this trip to those travelling as a family with children, they would benefit from the large range of activities and the great kids’ clubs with their extensive range of facilities.

I recently experienced my first ever river cruise on board the beautiful AmaSonata. I fell in love with each quaint, charming little town and village along the way. In each port there is the chance to enjoy bus tours, guided walks, cycling and occasionally tasting the local food. AmaWaterways use tour guides who live locally and really know the history behind each town, giving incredible insight to the past. The onboard experience is amazing, the staff are so friendly and the evening meal each night was always something to look forward to, cooked to perfection and presented exquisitely. Cruising the Danube was an unforgettable experience, unlike anything I’ve ever done before. I highly recommend a river cruise for people who love to see the beautiful hidden gems of a country, and the stunning scenic views in-between.

I was lucky enough to stay in two of Dubai’s best hotels. I loved the One & Only Royal Mirage, it has a very Arabian feel to it. We relaxed for the morning in the sunshine. Eventually, we moved to The Atlantis on the Palm via Rolls Royce transfer. The hotel is massive and very American in style and so reminded us of a hotel in Las Vegas. There are many bars and restaurants on offer to suit all tastes, age groups and budgets. I enjoyed every part of this trip but, for me, eating in the most amazing restaurants has to be a highlight.

An Amazing Argentinian Adventure Some highlights from my trip to Argentina include the escorted city tour of Buenos Aires with our amazing guide Sandra, who I would highly recommend. We also had a full day’s tour of the Perito Moreno Glacier, and visited a cookery school for some wine tasting and empanada making, the latter being a local delicacy in Argentina. It was so much fun and a great way to socialise whilst enjoying a wonderful meal. I had the most amazing trip to Argentina and will now recommend this as a diverse destination that’s suitable for all types of holidaymaker.

We do Ski!
The Slopes Of Val Thorens I got to enjoy an all-inclusive experience in the famous Val Thorens resort. The bedrooms are stunning - very spacious with a balcony offering magnificent views over the ski area. The extensive skiing which Val Thorens offers is obviously the main highlight. There really is nothing more exhilarating than whizzing down a mountain as fast as you can - but in control. Being able to ski straight out of the hotel’s front door was another major plus. I would recommend a holiday like this 100%. Club Med offers premium all-inclusive ski holidays, meaning the only thing you have to pay for in the resort is your ski equipment.

Solden and Obergurgl I was delighted to visit Austria’s resorts of Solden and Obergurgl for a few days. The accommodation was clean and tidy. It’s a Chalet Hotel so it has a really homely feel with big, squashy sofas in the lounge. We skied in Solden on the first day and Obergurgl on the second. We had such a good group of people and on the second day, we had all found our ski feet. both resorts are fantastic. Hurtigruten Voyage offers a unique opportunity to tour Norway’s western coastline more intimately as their smaller ships are better equipped to navigate the fjords and inlets nearer to shore, something that larger ships are unable to do. You will be sailing within the auroral oval which offers better opportunities of catching the mesmerising lights than if you were on a land-based trip and, by sailing up the coast, there will be no disruption of artificial, ambient light. During the 12-day expeditions, you will visit 34 ports of call and cover over 2,400 nautical miles. And, if the lights don’t occur during your voyage, Hurtigruten will offer you a FREE 6 or 7-day Classic Voyage between October and March (terms and conditions apply). You will need plenty of warm clothing for these winter sailings to the Arctic, there is no need for formal wear. The locals who use the ships as their lifeline do not dress for dinner and therefore neither should you.

On all departures, you will have the chance to take part in some fantastic winter excursions to areas of the frozen land that are seldom seen by tourists.
