Anybody who travels regularly, or has seen some of the many television adverts for travel companies, will be aware of the term ABTA. But what does this actually mean to you as a holidaymaker? Aside from it being the acronym for the Association of British Travel Agents, what does it actually indicate if an organisation is ‘ABTA bonded’?

If you are familiar with ABTA, this is definitely a good thing, as the chances are your holiday would have been protected by the revered institution in the past. Travel agents aspire to being part of a carefully selected portfolio in order to offer peace of mind to discerning travellers like you.

Being ABTA bonded means that a travel agent must adhere to a lengthy code of conduct which aims to ensure the customer receives exactly what they asked for and has the best experience possible. Covering a booking from start to finish, the code of conduct requires agents to, among other things, provide accurate information about what is being booked, offer a refund on your trip if your flight is significantly delayed and you no longer want to travel, and respond to any complaint within a 28-day period.

With this in mind, it’s clear to see why booking with an ABTA-bonded agent is so appealing.

And with travel related fraud up a massive 450% in recent years, costing a remarkable £11.5 million, holidaymakers are wise to look for the ABTA logo at every opportunity.

It was a stress free start to a wonderful tour of the beautiful island of Sicily .

We visited Mount Etna, a must see on a trip to Sicily. I really enjoyed explorin g the lovely cobbled streets and Greek Theatr e at Taormina.

Leaving the bright lights of Tokyo behind, you set off to explore rural Japan – first stop, Mt Fuji! There is always a huge sense of anticipation as you wait for this national icon to appear around the next corner. There she stands in all her snow-capped magnificence.

Accommodation for two nights of this tour is at a hot spring resort right on the shore of spectacular Kawaguchiko, one of the Fuji Five Lakes. Known as onsen, hot springs have been enjoyed by the Japanese for centuries for their health benefits and as a place to socialise. Everyone should feel reinvigorated after soaking in the ancient and therapeutic geothermal waters.

You will find even more of traditional Japan in Kyoto, enjoying lunch with a genuine Maiko (apprentice Geisha), called Fukuya. She will entertain you with a traditional Japanese dance and then sit with you, answering your questions on anything and everything about life as a Maiko.

The temples of Kyoto perfectly symbolise old Japanese.

The beautiful Ryoan-Ji Temple is a lush and tranquil escape – a beautiful, Zen rock garden is the centre piece.

Kiyomizu-dera, a 16th-century Buddhist temple offers spectacular woodland vistas – it is said that if you drink the pure water here you’ll enjoy good health and long life. Spending any time in Kyoto leaves you with a sense of inner-peace, calmness and an insight into ancient Japanese culture.
