The concept of a “holiday” began as religious “holy days” like Easter and Christmas, centred around worship, food, and community gatherings. Early leisure travel was slow and largely limited to the wealthy, involving carriage journeys to visit relatives, seaside visits for health - complete with bathing machines - or elite educational trips such as the Grand Tour of Europe.
The 19th-century Industrial Revolution transformed travel, as the expanding rail network made seaside trips accessible to the masses. The Bank Holidays Act of 1871 introduced designated leisure days, while Wakes Weeks gave workers time off - albeit unpaid - to enjoy traditional coastal holidays. Around this time, Thomas Cook pioneered organised rail excursions, which developed into package holidays combining travel, accommodation, and meals, and soon expanded internationally, opening up global travel to the middle classes.
In the 20th century, the Holidays with Pay Act of 1938 introduced paid annual leave, helping establish travel as a mass-market industry. By the 1970s, longer holidays, car ownership, and the rise of air travel broadened options, while television programmes inspired overseas trips, leading to a surge in international tourism.
In the 21st century, the internet and social media have made even the most remote destinations visible, fuelling a growing desire to explore. Travellers are increasingly seeking personalised, authentic, and sustainable experiences, meaning the definition of a holiday is now more diverse and individual than ever before.
ESCAPE YOUR 9-5
With the average career now stretching to over 40 working years, bigger trips that would previously have been saved until retirement are now featuring mid-career, when travellers are more able and adventurous - no longer waiting to enjoy their bucket list travels.
ESCAPE YOUR FOUR WALLS
With many young adults in their 20s still living with their parents or returning home after studies, we’re witnessing a change in the dynamics of family holidays. Parents in their 50s and 60s are taking their grown-up children along on their travel adventures. These shared experiences are enjoyed together as adult equals, stepping away from the family home, with parents often subsidising or even entirely funding them. This offers a different kind of ‘inheritance’ that parents can gift their adult children and actually witness them enjoying.
ESCAPE FURTHER THAN BEFORE
As customers spread their wings beyond traditional European resorts, there has been a rise in mid-haul destinations. With flight times of 5-6 hours, these can offer real value for money, where spending more on travelling further is recouped by lower costs of living once in resort. Think destinations such as Tunisia, Morocco, Iceland, Montenegro and Croatia – not only great value but often a longer holiday season, avoiding summer peak crowds and pricing.

SCENIC JOURNEYS,
Have you ever wondered what it would be like to travel the world by train? In an age where relaxation and sustainability are perhaps higher on the list of priorities when it comes to booking a holiday, why not travel by rail?
From the tracks you can really take the time to admire the scenery as you travel through countryside and cityscapes. You can voyage into the clouds; through mountain ranges and across wild plains. You can steam through canyons, skirt the edges of lakes, rivers and oceans, and even spot wildlife – all without leaving the comfort of your pre-booked seat.
Here are some of our favourite rail tours, but there are many more available!

In the 1800’s, boarding a cruise ship was very much a means to an endsailing to another country was often the only way of getting there, and the destination was very much the focus as opposed to the journey. Companies such as the Peninsula and Oriental Steam Navigation Company (now P&O Cruises), Cunard and Holland America Line offered the only way
INNOVATION ON THE OCEAN
Until 1999, the only way to communicate with the wider world from a ship was by telex. Now Starlink Internet access has made life onboard so digital that you could even ‘work from sea’ as well as FaceTime the family.
The development of cruise smartphone apps boomed after 2020 to minimise person to person contact, and now they are invaluable to personalise your experience and get the most out of your holiday. Princess’ medallion technology even opens the cabin door for you, as well as allowing you to locate your travel companions and book a table for dinner.
Dictatorial dining is a thing of the past –dress codes are more relaxed, and things are more fluid, allowing choice of venue, timings and companions more than ever. Optional formal nights are still enjoyed by many as a chance for some sparkle and style, but operators recognise that personalisation is the key to enjoyment.
Whatever you may enjoy on land can now be enjoyed at sea, from ice rinks, wave riders, roller coasters, cinema screens, art galleries and water slides - the constant drive for innovation and differentiation means there is always something new to keep guests entertained.
to get from one continent to another, and it wasn’t until 1900 that the first ship specifically for leisure travel was built.
In the early 1900’s, cruising as a mode of luxury travel gained popularity, and this was the ‘golden age’ of Transatlantic crossings, where Cunard’s Queens Mary and Elizabeth epitomised style and elegance on the ocean. During World War 2, many ocean liners found a new purpose, transporting troops and supplies to play their own part in the war efforts.
By the 1950’s air travel replaced cruising as the most convenient and affordable transatlantic option, leaving the owners of cruise ships wondering how to remain attractive to their passengers. The solution was to focus on the experiences of the actual journey as being just as crucial as the destination reached. New cruise
lines offered shorter round-trip voyages as an alternative to package holidays, and with The Love Boat launching on TV in the 1970’s, the eyes of millions of viewers were opened to the concept of leisure cruising, with the hugely popular show running for 10 seasons until 1987. From this point the industry expanded rapidly, with increasingly larger and entertainment-focused ships offering pools, multiple dining options and elaborate shows. Cruising became more accessible and affordable as a holiday choice for all, and the industry operators now strive for constant innovation to differentiate and engage their consumers. With constant innovation in sustainability, technology, journey personalisation, and diversification of destinations, there really is a cruising option for everyone these days. More people than ever are enjoying cruising as the perfect holiday where you step onboard, unpack once and let the world unfold before you - with a ship and an itinerary to suit every traveller, the journey is now every part as important as the destination.

Into the Galápagos with
National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions
Last November, Tracy had the extraordinary privilege of joining a National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions voyage to one of the most remarkable places on Earth: the Galápagos Islands. Here are her trip highlights...
It’s hard to put into words what it feels like to walk in Darwin’s footsteps, surrounded by wildlife found nowhere else on Earth. One thing is certain: the Galápagos isn’t just a destination - it’s a life-changing experience.
And the very best way to see it? With National GeographicLindblad Expeditions, pioneers of expedition travel. Their collaboration with National Geographic brings unmatched expertise, authenticity and purpose to every journey. As the UK General Sales Agent for National GeographicLindblad Expeditions, Fred. Olsen Travel is proud to offer exclusive prices and access to these remarkable voyages.
By Tracy Clenshaw, Head of Commercial - Fred. Olsen Travel
Why Travel with National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions?
An expedition to the Galápagos isn’t just a holiday it’s an immersion in science, exploration, conservation, and discovery. That’s what makes National Geographic-Lindblad Expeditions so special.
Unrivalled Expertise
Every voyage features naturalists, scientists, photographers, and marine experts who bring the islands to life. Their knowledge is extraordinary, and their passion is infectious. With small expedition ships specially designed for exploring, every day offers
something new from snorkelling with sea lions to witnessing blue-footed boobies (and red footed boobies – who knew?) perform their courtship dance.
Genuine Connection to Nature & Conservation
National GeographicLindblad Expeditions has spent decades supporting the protection and preservation of the Galápagos. Travelling with them means your visit supports the conservation of this fragile ecosystem through the Lindblad ExpeditionsNational Geographic Fund.
Immersive, Active Exploration
Whether kayaking through turquoise waters, hiking volcanic islands, or learning photography from Geographiccertified photography instructors, every moment is crafted to help you experience the Galápagos up close.
The Galápagos: A Living Museum of Evolution
Nothing prepares you for the sheer wonder of these islands. Wildlife has evolved without fear, meaning you can stand several feet away from giant tortoises, marine iguanas, and playful sea lions without disturbing them. Each island feels like a world of its own, shaped by lava, wind, and waves over millions of years.
Some of my most unforgettable moments included:
• Watching a group of sea lion pups tumble and play along a pristine white sand beach.
• Snorkelling alongside green sea turtles gliding gracefully through crystal clear water.
• Seeing the famed Darwin’s finches and understanding their role in shaping evolutionary theory.
• Walking across young lava fields that make you feel as if you’ve landed on another planet.
It is impossible to leave the Galápagos unchanged. Its magic stays with you.

River cruising has a long and fascinating history that reflects the development of transportation, trade, and tourism across civilisations. Long before river cruising became a leisure activity, rivers served as vital routes for travel and commerce.
With the advent of steampowered boats during the 19th century, river travel became faster, safer, and more reliable than traditional sailing vessels - Mississippi paddle steamers carried passengers in relative luxury with dining rooms, entertainment, and private cabins, whilst European rivers became popular, linking cultural centres such as Vienna, Budapest, and Cologne. These journeys offered scenic landscapes and historic cities, but the growth of railways, and later air travel, curtailed the popularity of river travel for several decades. In the late 20th century, an increasing demand for slower,
experience-based tourism emerged, and river cruising experienced a renaissance. River cruise ships were specially designed with comfortable cabins, panoramic windows, and onboard amenities - unlike their ocean counterparts, these small ships could dock in the centre of cities, allowing passengers to easily explore destinations.
Today, river cruising is one of the fastest-growing sectors of the tourism industry and modern ships operate on major waterways across Europe, Asia, Africa, and the Americas. Travellers are attracted by the combination of cultural exploration, scenic views, and relaxed travel. This most ancient method of transportation has evolved into a modern luxury travel experience, offering a different view from your panoramic window each day.
Going
with the
Celebrity Cruises will enter the river cruise market in 2027, highlighting the sector’s popularity, with innovative ships featuring “Magic Edge” dining pods that extend over the water for immersive views.
Ships are designed to bring you closer to each destination, with open-air balconies, beds facing the views, and even retractable roofs that transform onboard spaces into open-air pools. Onboard Emerald’s Star-Ships the roof also retracts to convert the cinema into an open-air pool during the day!
On-shore excursions don’t just mean a city tour and a museum – with an increased focus on active discovery, many ships offer bicycles, E-bikes, and hiking tours to allow guests to explore each destination at their own pace.
