8th December 2018 - 7th January 2019 When the air becomes crisper and the nights long, Bruges and its romantic atmosphere offer the perfect setting for a short break. If it is romance you’re after, you’ll find it all over the city and in whatever form of transport you choose to take. France - Nice
Once upon a time, Nice was the go-to winter destination for the British upper classes – a tradition that Harry and Megan brought back a couple of years ago. With warmer temperatures than the UK but still providing that after dark chill that keeps you on your toes, you’ll be free to discover the art and culture along the French Riviera without the crowds. Take an afternoon stroll along the Promenade des Anglais, occasionally glancing out across the Bay of Angels to remind yourself of the fantastic light and aura that Nice is famous for. Then, after the sun sets, make your way to Rue Lascaris for a pre-dinner drink in one of the many bars that have recently sprung up in this previously dishevelled part of town. France - Paris Paris is beautiful all year round but the City of Lights really earns its nickname during the festive period. Streets in various different arrondissements are decorated with twinkling lights and vibrant light shows, allowing you to enjoy the romantic atmosphere well into the evening. There are plenty of Christmas markets to explore as well, especially the Marché de Noël along the Champs-Elysées. There’s plenty to look forward to after Christmas as well though, as the crowds thin out, air fares drop and there’s more chance of bagging a table at one of the city’s world-famous Michelinstarred restaurants. Also, as stipulated by the government, the New Year is when the department stores and high street shops have their sales – even the upmarket ones like Galeries Lafayette. If you are in need of something to keep you warm as day turns to night, the cafés of Paris are always awash with Vin Chaud in the winter. The French version of mulled wine is sure to warm your stomach and your hands at the same time.

Germany Baden-Baden

Germany - Berlin
26th November 2018 - 6th January 2019 If you like the option of having various different Christmas markets to choose from then you are sure to enjoy a winter trip to the German capital. In total, there are around 20 different spots where you can get into the festive spirit, spreading all the way from Alexanderplatz in the city centre to the borough of Spandau in the west. The largest markets can be found at the Wilhelm Memorial Church, Alexanderplatz, Gendarmenmarkt and Potsdamer Platz. The latter offers an entire winter world complete with ice skating, a toboggan run and many other winter sports. Of the rest, highlights include trendy arts and crafts in Kreuzberg, organic and fair-trade products on Sophienstrasse, and Scandinavian offerings at the Kulturbrauerei. Germany Black Forest
As one of the most beautiful regions in Germany, the Black Forest makes an ideal holiday destination at any time of the year. After a sprinkling of snow, the fir trees and wide open meadows become even more enchanting and offer some great activities for anyone who likes to get out and explore. There are hundreds of miles of crosscountry trails to enjoy, whether that’s on foot or with the help of skis. Other ways to pass the time include tobogganing, ice skating or riding the chair lift up to the top of Feldberg for some outstanding views. Germany - Bremen 26th November - 23rd December 2018
The people of Bremen are proud of their maritime heritage and this is something that is heavily celebrated during the festive period. The traditional boats in the harbour area are decked out in strings of lights, adding to the nostalgic feeling along the River Weser. And it is in this part of the city where you will find ‘Schlachte-Zauber’ or Schlachte Magic as it is known in English. Schlachte refers to the name of the picturesque riverside promenade where you will find the market and the magic part refers to the way your senses will be stirred. The smell of mulled wine, cinnamon and fried fish fill the air as you are transported back to medieval times when this Hanseatic city was at the height of its power. As well as the handicrafts on offer, there will be street performers and authentic tradesmen to complete the atmosphere. Once you’ve reached the end of the Schlachte promenade, take a stroll to the town hall square via the iconic Böttcherstraße where you’ll find another Christmas market. Around 160 stalls surround the World Heritage-listed buildings offering local cuisine, fantastic gift ideas and delightful tree decorations.

Germany - Cologne 26th November - 23rd December 2018
If you like variety when it comes to Christmas markets then Cologne is a great choice as it offers up to seven different areas where you can search for souvenirs, gifts and festive treats amongst the stalls. There are four main markets, the most impressive of which sits in front of the iconic Gothic cathedral and features the largest Christmas tree in the Rhineland. Venture into the Old Town and you will discover a market that’s watched over by the mythical Heinzelmännchen. These little people are intertwined with Cologne’s folklore and are there to ensure everything runs smoothly and no mass market products are sold. That’s one reason why each of the craftsman selling their wares here has to demonstrate their work regularly for all to see. Other markets include those in the harbour area and on the Neumarkt. The former is located close to the chocolate museum on the banks of the Rhine and features tented stalls that look like a ship’s sails. Sailors sing sea shanties and the mischievous ‘Rhine Pirates’ will be telling tales and performing for the crowds. In contrast, the Christmas market at the Neumarkt is named in honour of the angels that glide through its aisles sprinkling magical dust in their wake. The stalls here can be described as slightly more upmarket and this is the perfect place to relax with a mug of mulled wine.

Germany Dresden & Leipzig
A lot of German cities claim to have the oldest Christmas market in the country but, in its 584th year, Dresden can lay the strongest claim to this title. Walking from the main train station, the Christmas Mile and its glistening lights will take you to some of the eleven different Christmas markets on offer. The main one, Dresden Striezelmarkt, can be found in the Altmarkt and offers local cuisine and a variety of authentic crafts from the nearby Erzgebirge (Ore Mountains). Others include the market on Prager Straße, where a giant Christmas tree is lit-up every night with accompanying music; the market at the Frauenkirche, which boasts a massive walk-in Christmas pyramid; and the Palace Christmas Market, which provides a more relaxed atmosphere complete with an ice skating rink. One event during the festive calendar that is definitely worth seeing if you get the chance is the 25th annual Stollen Festival. It will take place on 8th December, during which an oversized stollen (a Dresden speciality) will be paraded through the streets and then sliced for everyone to enjoy.
Leipzig – 27th November - 23rd December 2018 Whilst not quite as old as Dresden, the Leipzig Christmas market is still one of the oldest and largest in Germany. Thousands of twinkling lights set the scene for couples and families to revel in the festive spirit whilst enjoying the city’s sights. Children will love the chance to meet Santa on the market square stage, take a twirl in the Ferris wheel on Augustusplatz, bake some delicious cookies at Café Zimtstern or stroll through the Fairytale Forest in front of the Leipzig Opera House. Meanwhile, adults can enjoy the Finnish Village located close to the big wheel, the main Christmas market on the Marktplatz or the historical Anno Domini market on Naschmarkt. With the smell of Glögi in the air and the sound of trombonists playing from the balcony of the Old City Hall ringing all around, you’ll have to be a real Grinch not to have a permanent smile on your face.

Aside from the opportunity to buy local products, watch the craftsmen at work and sample regional food specialties including the famous German hot mulled wine, visitors can glide across the ice rink or see the city from on high with a ride on the Burgplatz Wheel of Vision. And, for an extensive array of Christmas shopping, a visit to the Königsallee is a must, where high-end fashion brands can be found amongst the Christmas market stalls. Germany Hamburg
22nd November - 23rd December 2018 However you like to celebrate Christmas, from the traditional to the modern and quirky, Hamburg and its many Christmas markets will have something for you. As another of Germany’s maritime cities, this heritage is celebrated throughout the festive period – especially at the fairytale ships on the Inner Alster. This area is great for families with children as there are activities such as face painting, baking workshops and puppet shows for them to enjoy. The Rathausmarkt plays host to the main market, one which focusses on locally made products such as candles, lanterns and wood carvings. This is also one of the best places to sample some schmalzkuchen – a speciality of Hamburg. The Christmas market at the Gänsemarkt is another great spot for anyone who likes a traditional Christmas but this time the products offer a more international feel. If, however, you’re looking for something a little different and quirky, be sure to visit Santa Pauli. It will come as no surprise that the city with its own sinful mile (the Reeperbahn) is also home to this erotic themed Christmas market. Here, and at the LGBTQ friendly Winter Pride, carols are swapped for dance DJ sets and games are played to encourage interaction. It’s definitely a more raucous affair compared to your usual Christmas market, but equally as fun.

Germany - Munich 27th November - 24th December 2018
At Bavaria’s largest Christmas market, the stalls spill out from the Marienplatz around the town hall to cover an area of about 20,000 square metres. It’s a traditional affair, with locally made decorations and regional treats on offer – look out for small figures made from nuts and dried fruits known as Zwetschgenmandl. The festive atmosphere spreads all the way along the Neuhauserstraße where you will find the charming manger market (Kripperlmarkt). This is the place where you can piece together your own nativity scene by browsing the various stalls. From donkeys and sheep to wise men and angels, you can build your own bespoke Christmas story. There are even moving parts and working lamps that you can add. Continue onto the Rindermarkt and you will find the ‘Square of Stars’. The trees above the stalls are lit-up by glistening stars, giving the area a romantic feel. Yet more Bavarian specialities are on offer here, including bratwurst and steaming beer – a great alternative to mulled wine.

27th November - 23rd December 2018 Ludwigsburg during Christmas season is more than just a visit: the Christmas market and the nearby pedestrian area with its numerous shopping opportunities will make your Christmas shopping a real pleasure. A golden glow hangs over the arcade-lined marketplace with gleaming strings from thousands of tiny lights stretching over the lovingly decorated stalls; graceful angels spread their great, glimmering wings; and both baroque churches shine in festive splendour. The lighting is as special as the arrangement of the stalls. The symmetry and clean lines of Ludwigburg’s streets and of the famous baroque palace gardens are echoed in the Christmas market, where you can stroll in leisure. Every year, the Nuremberg Christmas market begins in the same way. The Nuremberg Christkind (a young woman carefully chosen from thousands of hopefuls across the city) climbs to the balcony of the Church of Our Lady to welcome everyone and officially open the festivities. Thanks to Martin Luther, the Christkind was introduced as the gift giver in Nuremberg and so locals celebrate this on the 24th December. At the market itself, found on Hauptmarkt, you’ll find stalls dedicated to fashion, handicrafts, souvenirs, Christmas decorations and much more. And they’ll be plenty of opportunities to try the original Nuremberg bratwurst with its long, thin shape. Other specialities include the famous Nuremberg gingerbread and Zwetschgenmännle – miniature figures made of prunes and walnuts to represent different jobs and hobbies. Netherlands Amsterdam
With its iconic canals and charming cobbled streets, Amsterdam looks like a fairy tale in the winter, especially if you’re lucky enough to have a dusting of snow during your stay. As well as the Christmas markets, offering independent handicrafts and local delicacies such as oliebollen (doughnut balls), you can combine your visit with the annual Amsterdam Light Festival (29th November 2018 until 20th January 2019). A special boat tour will be available to take you around the city so that you can admire the different installations but it’s just as easy to walk and spot them on landmarks, bridges and canals as you go. After your trip around the streets of Amsterdam, take some time out to snuggle up inside one of the many pubs or café (beware the difference between these and coffeeshops) with a hot chocolate or a mulled wine. If temperatures are really cold, you might even get the chance to see the canals freeze over and watch as locals and tourists rush to don there ice skates. Scandinavia Copenhagen The Danish word ‘hygge’ has made its way into British and American vocabulary in recent years and, now that more of us are familiar with it, it’s clear that winter is the perfect time to experience this feeling in Denmark. If you haven’t heard this word yet, ‘hygge’ refers to a warm and cosy feeling you get from great experiences with close friends and family or from exploring on your own – that is exactly what you can look forward to in Copenhagen. Whilst there are some great Christmas markets to see in the city (the one in the famous Nyhavn harbour being our pick), this is in no way the extent of the winter activities. A trip to Tivoli Gardens will see your eyes glisten as the world’s oldest amusement park is given a festive makeover, there’s ice skating at Frederiksberg Runddel, a wide range of museums will welcome you inside if the heavens open and food halls like Torvehallarne are on-hand for when your stomach starts to growl. If you do sample the latter, be sure to try Smørrebrød (rye bread topped with a selection of meat, fish and cheeses) and some local glogg (mulled wine). Luckily, after a day of exploring Copenhagen, the Danes have the perfect way to warm up. Sauna is a big deal in this part of the world and you will get plenty of opportunities to find this out for yourself. Scandinavia Stockholm When the temperatures start to drop and snow begins to fall, many of Stockholm’s residents take a trip to one of the many ski slopes that surround the city. Resorts such as Hammarbybacken and Flottsbrobacken have fantastic facilities for both beginners and more experienced skiers, including the chance to snowboard if you prefer. Back in the city centre, Christmas markets and food halls beckon you to try some of the local cuisine.
