Ghent

8th December 2017 to 7th January 2018 The Flemish city of Ghent charms visitors with its well-preserved medieval centre. This is the perfect setting for a wide array of festive stalls selling gifts, decorations and delicious treats. The majority of the market can be found on Korenmarkt and the other streets in front of the imposing St Bavo’s cathedral. Its small size means it’s easy to get around, leaving you with plenty of time to enjoy the harmonious carollers and the twinkling fairy lights. Belgian Christmas markets are renowned for the culinary delights they offer, including chocolates, cookies, waffles and frites (chips). Some of the local specialities include cone-shaped sweets known as Ghent noses, Ganda ham from the butchers’ hall, Gruut beer and an elderflower drink called Roomer. Once Christmas is over, the spotlight is switched to Ghent’s famous Light Festival. This takes place from 31st January 2018 until 4th February 2018 and features light installations around the city and landmarks brought to life by clever projection shows.

7th December to 20th December 2017 2017 marks the 30th annual Christmas market in Leuven, an inviting city situated to the east of Brussels. The market is just one aspect of the exciting, month-long Winter Season, which lasts from 6th December 2017 until 6th January 2018. Along with over 170 festive stalls, there’s late night shopping, live music, a post-Christmas fancy dress run and a street food festival. This year, Sint-Donatus Park will be the setting for most of the stalls, with some also being found on Ladeuzeplein. They will offer a wide range of local handicrafts and food specialities. One such culinary thrill comes in the form of oliebollen – traditional Belgian dough balls that are given a liberal dusting of sugar. If you’re travelling with children, be sure to visit Santa Claus in his cosy wooden hut amongst the glistening stalls. Plus, if you choose to visit this beautiful Belgian city on the 9th December 2017, you will be able to see the Great Beguinage lit up by candlelight between 5pm and 9pm.

Zagreb

2nd December 2017 to 7th January 2018 Croatia may not be the most obvious destination for a Christmas market holiday, but the events happening in Zagreb during the Advent season can rival those in the most charming German city. It’s the sheer diversity of celebrations that makes the Croatian capital a great choice at this time of year. Whether you enjoy the traditional, understated side of Christmas or the more commercialised aspect where anything goes, you’ll be able to find something to suit you and your family. Sure, there are plenty of opportunities to buy local gifts and try specialities like strudel and strukli, but it is the other events that make Zagreb so magical. The main stalls are located on Ban Jelačić Square, but there is so much besides this central area. The ice park hosts a giant skating rink, every tree in Zrinjevac Park is lit up beautifully, young people flock to the trendy European Square for live movies and music, there’s a chance to let your hair down with food and dancing at ‘fooling around’ street parties on Tomićeva and Kurelčeva, a multimedia 3D fairy tale is told through the Advent Tunnel, and the music of Johann Strauss fills the Oktogon.

Take, for example, the intriguing fashion and artistic items on sale at the trendy Kreuzberg Christmas Market or the environmentally friendly market on Sophienstraße, which focusses on organic, ecological and fair trade products. If it’s culinary treats, rather than gifts, you’re looking for, head to Markethalle IX on December 3rd to sample delicious items from 40 different confectioners. Perhaps the most impressive setting, though, is the stunning Charlottenburg Palace, which is sparkling with festive lights at this time of year. It also features the largest Erzgebirge wooden pyramid in the land. That’s not all, though, as this Saxon city can offer no less than 10 other markets for you to enjoy. These include the medieval traders of the Neumarkt, the winter sports and après-ski atmosphere on Postplatz, and the alternative and unusual offerings of the Neustädter Gelichter. Not far away, in Leipzig, another large and historical Christmas market takes place. More than 200 stalls can be found on the Marktplatz, where the atmosphere is created by the live performances on the stage. Elsewhere, you can get a fantastic look at the twinkling lights from the Ferris wheel on Augustusplatz and enjoy some Scandinavian delights in the Finnish market nearby.

Frankfurt

This giant spruce stands proudly on the Römerberg, surrounded by festive stalls and is an iconic symbol that the celebrations have begun. Due to the fact that the Frankfurt Christmas market was, for a long time, strictly a local affair, you will find many specialities sold in abundance. 27th November to 23rd December 2017 The festive period in Hamburg starts with a tradition that sees Santa distributing Christmas trees to the many boats in the harbour. Being such a significant port, the sailors here play a key role in the city’s industry and this is the perfect way to remember this and to think about those who won’t be at home for Christmas. The markets themselves are located around the city centre, with the largest being held outside St. Michael's Church, offering a classic yuletide atmosphere. Traditional gifts and culinary delights such as Feuerzangenbowle (a rum-soaked sugarloaf which is set on fire and left to drip over mulled wine) are also available at the Ottensen Christmas market. Elsewhere, visitors are encouraged to swap unwanted gifts at the LGBTQ ‘Winter Pride’ market and enjoy all the fun of the fair at the annual Winter Dom between November 3rd and December 3rd. Extra magic is created when Santa Claus flies through the sky in his sleigh every evening and when the Christmas parade takes to the streets every Saturday in Advent.

Meanwhile, on Neuhauser Straße, the Manger Market offers rare items and a wide range of wooden figures to build your own nativity scene at home. Rothenburg ob der Tauber 1st to 23rd December 2017

The charming medieval streets of Rothenburg are the perfect setting for a Christmas market and definitely create a fairytale atmosphere within the town. Amongst well-preserved buildings from the Middle Ages, the festive stalls spread the smells of Franconia and beckon you to take home some fantastic souvenirs. Particular specialities worth searching out (although you won’t have to look too hard) are white mulled wine and the famous snowballs – balls of shortcrust pastry decorated with icy sugar, chocolate or nuts. One highlight of the Reiterlesmarkt, which can look back on over 500 years of history, is the arrival of the figure from whom the market gets its name. The Rothenburger Reiterle is a cloaked man who appears on horseback to officially open the celebrations. Once seen as someone to be feared, he is now portrayed as a friendly messenger and locals look forward to his visit. Away from the market, the Käthe Wolhfahrt Christmas village is a must-see. The shop is open all year round and sells everything Christmas related you could ever imagine.

The main areas are on Barfüsserplatz and Münsterplatz, but there are also markets on Claraplatz and Rheingasse. The former is a feast for foodies, featuring local specialties like the famous Basler Läckerli (gingerbread), whilst the latter is a more intimate neighbourhood market with great activities for children. And speaking of the little ones, the Christmas fairytale forest on the Münsterplatz offers some great ways for them to get hands-on with baking, crafting and general fun. Away from the stalls, the streets are lined with sparking pine trees, leading visitors to some excellent shopping. Amongst the fashion brands, you’ll find Johann Wanner’s Christmas Shop featuring a wide range of unique decorations. Finally, for that extra dose of Christmas magic, visit the inner courtyard of the City Hall where you can write your hopes for the festive season in the Basel Wish Book.
