As we approach the holiday season, let us pause and reflect that it really is the Holy Season.

One of the most enjoyable aspects of being President of Catholic United Financial is having the opportunity to represent our now 86,000 members in my travels and speaking engagements. Just recently, I was in South Dakota visiting some of our members — who happen to own prime pheasant hunting land — when I stopped by several Catholic elementary schools that are supported by our local councils and the Catholic United Financial Foundation Technology Grant Program. It was a great trip that started with an evening taco-feed at St. Agnes Church in Vermillion, S.D. Later that week, I stopped at three other Catholic elementary schools and presented checks to the pastors and principals for technology use in the classroom.

It brought me back to my youth at Rosary School in Northfield, Minn., as I watched all the young students in their uniforms, sitting quietly, respectfully and eager to learn. I saw smartboards, computer labs and students with hand-held answering devices (they looked like cell phones) going through their spelling words with enthusiasm. I know technology is foreign to many of us when we remember our classroom experience, but you cannot help but feel that they are learning at a much faster pace than we did. They still have to do the math, write the papers, spell correctly and study the Bible and the Catechism, but the modern technology aids seem to move things along faster and in an organized manner. I was impressed.

One principal told me that the students were expected to be able to make PowerPoint presentations by the end of 2nd grade. I remember when I told our managers we were going paperless at our management

meetings, and that they should use PowerPoint when presenting reports. You’d have thought I just told them we were now going to conduct all of our meetings in Chinese. Myself included, of course.

By the way, just to prove my proficiency in technology is improving, I can now text up to five words a minute with errors, nine minutes if I correct them.

In my last Journey column I mentioned that we needed to have patience and realize that our Lord sets the direction and pace, not us. I was thinking again about that column last week as I watched events unfold around my life.

On Saturday, I was raking up the last of our leaves before it snowed and an elderly gentleman from the neighborhood passed by using his walker.

He stopped to chat. I have known him since my youth and remembered that he still owned a lot of farmland a few miles from town, so I asked the question that you can always get a farmer to answer, “How were the crops this year?”

He stopped and talked about the lack of rain, the concrete-like ground this fall, all the dryness and dust.

“The crops were ok, they could have been better. The fields have been more productive in the past few years.”

Then he stopped, looked at me and said, “Sometimes we forget the yield is not up to us but the Lord.”

There, I heard it again. As I completed my yard work — it was snowing by now — I couldn’t help but wonder if the Lord was trying to tell me something, and I was not listening.

Within 48 hours of this conversation, I learned that another neighbor who had been battling cancer had passed away; Monsignor James Habiger, our Spiritual Director, was having major bypass surgery; and the Sales Representative whom I had just visited in South Dakota had just had a major heart attack.

This is a younger man in otherwise excellent health.

All this brought me back to the Gospel readings of a few Sundays ago, Matthew 25:13. “Watch therefore, for you know neither the day or the hour.”

Have a wonderful Holy Season, living each day to its fullest in the bounty of the Lord.

Although a year seems like a long time, 2010 is really not so long ago. These photos just made it to the offices of Our Catholic Journey. Motherhood in itself is an exciting new challenge, but for Jessica Weber, it became a challenge of life and death.

During childbirth, Weber suffered a brain hemorrhage and stroke. Miraculously, she and her baby survived. On July 20, 1950, more than 4,500 soldiers and officers boarded the USNS General Daniel I.

Sultan in Seattle, Wash. As the troop transport steamed from its safe harbor to the Korean War, some turned to watch their homeland melt into the horizon. For many aboard, it would be the last time they ever set eyes on America.

just a few days earlier, he had been camping in Yellowstone National Park with his sister Rosanne when he learned he would be deployed to a place he couldn’t find on a map.

“He was beside himself,” his sister Terry Kegley, now 82, says. “He wondered where Korea even was.

But he was always so upbeat about everything. He just kept it to himself so he wouldn’t frighten anyone.”

he Korean War is remembered for its brutality and the harsh conditions met by its soldiers, when it’s remembered at all. For all the soldiers and marines endured, the poor training and equipment, the endless patrols in harsh country and the vicious enemy forces they faced, Korean War veterans are rewarded with the distinction of fighting America’s forgotten war.

But sixty years later, Terry and Rosanne Fastner still remember what it was like at home when the letters stopped coming.

“Our parents were aged at that time, which made it harder,” Rosanne says. “It made it a lot harder.”

The invasion of South Korea began on June 25, 1950. Fastner arrived in Pusan July 31, and was fighting in the Battle of the Pusan Perimeter by August 6. In early September, the defenders broke out and began pushing the North Korean army back. On

orea wasn’t MSG Fastner’s first experience in combat, or for that matter in being wounded. By the time he boarded the General Sultan he was already a combat veteran of World War II. He had been captured by the Nazis, been wounded and received the Purple Heart, and had a steel plate put in his hip; and he didn’t hold grudges. After the war, he married a woman who served and was wounded herself in the German army.

Between the two wars, they had one son and adopted another.

Fastner was the youngest boy of Emmanuel and Rosa Fastner’s 11 children. Like all the rest, he grew up in St. Paul attending St. Agnes parish. At 19, he joined the Civilian Conservation Corps then headed into the service at the outset of WWII.

on that same day, the Chinese Army had crossed into Korea.

MacArthur launched his “Home-by-Christmas” offensive on November 24, directly into a Chinese ambush.

Faster’s 2nd Infantry Division was decimated at the Battle of Ch’ongch’on. As the Eighth Army retreated back to South Korea, MSG Fastner attempted to delay the advancing Chinese near Kunu-Ri. He was reported captured November 30, 1951.

“We never gave up hope,” Rosanne says. They received a little news, knew he’d been captured but heard little about his condition.

They stopped receiving letters.

After the war, in 1954, they learned he had been sent to a place called Camp 5 and where, on February 28, 1951, he died of malnutrition and exposure.

“There wasn’t much news to go with it,” Terry says. “When he was captured in Germany, we knew he received the care he needed, but with the Koreans, we heard it was bad.”

fter recovering from his wounds of September 2, Fastner rejoined his unit. In just a month, the situation had changed dramatically.

Gen. Douglas MacArthur had pushed the communists back across the 38th parallel and was pursuing them toward the Chinese border. He would have been fighting the day Pyongyang (the North Korean capital) was captured. Little did the fighting men, or even the General himself know,

ears passed. Terry and Rosanne established a relationship with Michael’s namesake son, who was two when his dad boarded the troopship.

“We sent him every bit of info and possession we had of Michael’s, and he just treasured it,” Terry says.

Since the 1970s, the government has sustained an effort to identify and return home the remains of American soldiers Missing in Action. Since its creation, the Joint POW/MIA Accounting Command (JPAC) in Oahu, Hawaii, has identified more than 1,800 service members.

Between 1990 and 1994, the North Koreans exhumed and returned what they claimed were 208 individuals. The JPAC began to investigate but had no other means to identify them than by material remains and DNA evidence. More time passed and a call went out for blood samples; the sisters complied and hoped.

For years afterwards, they

traveled around the Midwest to hear when JPAC had made a positive ID nearby.

“It’s to encourage surviving families,” Terry says. “To give them hope that yours might one day come home too. It makes you feel a little better, but we stopped going this year because we don’t travel that far anymore.”

So in March of this year, just as they gave up hope that they would ever bring him home, a letter arrived.

“It was an unreal feeling,” Terry says. “After 60 years, they found his body. It was all those same feelings all over again, but this time there was relief. You don’t know how many times we thought maybe he was captured and brainwashed, roaming around in Korea. This was finality.”

“It had to be a miracle,” Rosanne says.

astner was given a Mass of Christian burial at St. Agnes church in St. Paul, his long-ago home parish.

Governor Dayton ordered flags to fly at half-mast statewide on the day of his funeral. He was buried with full military honors at Fort Snelling National Cemetery.

For his bravery in battle and his sacrifice, we think of him and all soldiers, sailors and airmen past and present this Veterans Day. During his service, Fastner received the Purple Heart with Oak Leaf Cluster, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star for valor in combat, and the second award Combat Infantryman Badge.

How the membership boom of the 1950s can help us recruit new members in 2012 In 1951, Catholic United Financial (then the Catholic Aid Association) set a new milestone for membership recruitment. Members and “proposers” attracted 1,802 new members, a five percent increase of the total membership.

“This achievement, especially of the past few years commands an increasing respect and confidence which assures continuing enthusiastic cooperation and a consistent sound future growth,” wrote the editor of the Catholic Aid News.

That milestone signaled the start of a decade of growth for the Association, from 30,540 members in 1950 to 50,002 in May 1960. Routinely, the Association would log additions of 250 to 300 members a month for the next 10 years. In June of 1959, more than 500 members joined in that month alone. By the time everyone flipped their calendars over to 1960, Catholic United had experienced five consecutive years of membership growth surpassing 2,000 each year.

Looking back at the historical record, there were numerous variables that caused the growth of the 1950s. The “Baby Boom” that characterized the time was, of course, a major factor in the growth of the Association. But it is also curious at how personal the membership drive became to average members. The Catholic Aid News records several stories of individual councils running their own membership drive meetings and doing so with eyebrow-raising success. And it regularly featured stories of individual members who were the top recruiters of each quarter.

Membership fever had infected the Association, and the “infection” spread excitedly across the Upper Midwest. Societies from Strasburg to Winona were featured in the paper as having successful membership growth.

The Nov. 20, 1950, edition of Catholic Aid News records that St. Mary’s Council of Robbinsdale, Minn., and St. Joseph’s Council of Crystal Lake, Minn., held a joint meeting specifically for prospective members as part of an “intensive” membership drive effort for the month of November.

The Aug. 22, 1951, edition of the newspaper contains a story of how St. Willibrord’s Council of Gibbon, Minn., managed to recruit 29 new members in July of that year “without the assistance of any organizer – without any help whatsoever from the head office.”

Joseph Zettel, then president of St. Willibrord’s Council, wrote a letter to Catholic United President Michael Ettel to share the secret of his success. Zettel wrote that months of talk in council meetings about getting new members accomplished just that, a lot of talk.

He and other concerned members decided to visit prospects in their homes and tell them directly about the good things that Catholic United programs and products had done for them.

All this recruiting activity didn’t go unrewarded! Members were notified through the newspaper of prizes they could earn for generating new sales and new members. Those prizes ranged from sets of steak knives and Brownie cameras to electric frying pans, televisions, cash prizes and government bonds.

The power of a personal message Would you recommend a company like Catholic United to someone you know? That’s what marketing gurus these days call “The Ultimate Question” because of just how powerful the results are. Our Association experienced those results in the mid-20th century. Catholic United members certainly knew the power of referrals back when poodle skirts and “Blue Suede Shoes” were popular.

Rob Markey, a best-selling author on market and business in the 21st century, explains it this way, “When you have one good experience with a product or company, you might make note of it or even tell one or two people. When you find that a company consistently makes your life better, you almost can’t contain yourself, wanting to tell friends or colleagues about news@catholicunited.org

the participating Catholic schools and the students and families they serve.

This year promises to be the biggest event yet, growing once again from the previous year to now include 63 schools. It’s a trend the program’s creators hope will go on for many years to come.

The 2011 raffle brought in more than $360,000 for the 46 schools that took part. For the average participating school, which would raise more than $7,500, it offers a significant financial boost. But for some of the top earners, the Catholic Schools Raffle has made a place for itself as a cornerstone of annual fundraising.

St. Francis of the Lakes in Bemidji, Minn., may not have the most students of the schools in this year’s raffle — it’s close, but that honor goes to St. Mary’s in Sleepy Eye, Minn. — but they do have their hearts set on raising the most money… again.

Last year, the students and families of St. Francis of the Lakes brought in more than $34,000. A tremendous sum, and more than

is a tak any other school by almost $10,000. But at least one of their school administrators thinks they can do even better in 2012.

“Our goal this year is $45,000,” Principal Deb Euteneur says.

“We’ve even made a logo this year that says ‘Keep on top!’ you know, to keep our title.”

They’re going to have their hands full defending it, though.

“This event is recognized throughout the state,” Euteneur says. “So we have some friendly rivalries going on with some of the other schools in the diocese.”

St. Francis School has clearly taken that competitive spirit to heart. In just two years, the raffle has been so successful there that it is now part of their operating budget. The money goes to different places, Euteneur says, like keeping the computer lab up-to-date and helping families in financial need. “We’ve begun to count on it as a fundraising source.”

school and its committed families plan carefully and work diligently for their reward. Families set goals, the school incentivizes, milestones and pep rallies keep the students motivated.

It may have become one of St. Francis’s biggest fundraising events, but in many cases, it doesn’t take tens of thousands of dollars to make a difference in the budget of a parochial school.

The average amount raised last year was about $7,500. St. Raphael School in Crystal, Minn., had set a $7,000 goal, which they fell just short of. Even at $6,300 the school was not disappointed.

“It was fabulous, as far as fundraisers go,” Interim Principal Jan Schulz says. “It wasn’t time consuming. Some others it takes a whole team of volunteers to run it, whereas this can be run by one or two people.”

Sarah Gerads, the parent coordinator at St. Raphael was that one (or two) people. (She’s just one.) She says, “I was really happy with the results last year, just to see that it could be done.

Just a little more effort and we could hit those high marks.”

St. Raphael’s plan is to use the funds to help pay for employee pay raises — a double benefit for the families served by St. Raphael.

Better pay for the employees, and a competent and content staff to improve the educational experience for the children.

Gerads, although satisfied with the previous year’s return, says she hopes to improve with experience.

Their “downfall” last year, she explains, is that they only had 63

percent of families participating.

“But we still almost made our goal of $7,000. It’s totally easy.”

Every school puts their earnings to different use. From addressing needs as basic as wireless Internet or the cost of field trips, to goals as ambitious as funding a playground or even to helping to build a new high school. Just one of the unique aspects of this program is the absolute freedom the schools have in where they apply the money they raise.

There is need everywhere, and Catholic United is trying to do its part by offering all the tools schools need to make as big a fundraising splash as they choose to.

“Some people have asked why they don’t just give us the money,” Gerads says. “I think it’s better this way, because putting in the effort to earn it, I believe showing the kids where it comes from, you get more out of it that way.”

Getting more out of it is exactly why the Catholic Schools Raffle exists. For while Catholic United’s favorite number is the total dollars raised each year — our $500,000 goal. A close second is the ratio 5:1.

It’s the “return on investment” we’ve witnessed for every dollar Catholic United spends on the raffle. It’s a testament to the generosity and enthusiasm in the communities served by Catholic United, that for every one dollar we spend putting the raffle together, participating Catholic schools receive five.

Estate Planning with John Tetzloff In the last article of “Keys to Your Kingdom” we discussed the importance of a person knowing what assets make up their estate.

We discussed the various asset types and a definition of each as well as how they fit into a person’s estate planning, retirement planning and protection planning.

In this article we’ll look at the tax rules that each asset class has in relation to three areas: Growth, Distribution and Death. Make sure you always consult your accountant or CPA for tax advice.

Bank products like CDs, checking/savings accounts and money market accounts are taxed as the interest is earned. We receive a 1099-INT to report interest income for our tax returns and are taxed accordingly. Since we are taxed annually, there is no tax when we ultimately spend those dollars. As these assets pass to our heirs at death, there is no income tax due other than a final tax return for the deceased estate.

Another type of investment to consider is a Non-Qualified Annuity. The money contributed to an annuity is after-tax money so there is no tax deduction and no contribution limits. As the money grows, the interest is tax deferred meaning the owner only pays tax on the interest earned when a distribution occurs.

Upon death, the beneficiaries pay income tax on the interest only.

The money the owner contributed (principal) is not taxed to the heirs.

Appreciated assets like real estate, stocks and mutual funds are taxed based on the gain realized upon sale of the asset.

As the values grow, there are no taxes due. When a person sells this type of asset, the gain needs to be calculated and then taxed according to capital gain tax levels.

This is based on the difference between what was paid originally for the asset (basis) and the sale price. Upon death, the heirs receive these types of assets with a “step-up in basis” meaning the new basis is re-calculated as to the fair market value of the asset upon death of the owner. This could be very beneficial to heirs on highly appreciated assets such as farm land.

Traditional IRAs, 401(k)s and 403(b)Tax-Qualified plans have some complex rules. Most qualified plans allow for a tax deduction on the amount contributed each year to the plan. There are many levels of contribution allowed depending on income and type of plan. As a person’s qualified plan grows, the tax on the interest earned is typically deferred until distribution.

When a person does take a distribution, both contributions and interest earned are taxable. This also holds true when heirs receive qualified

plans upon the death of owner.

The proceeds are added to the heirs’ income in the year they are received and are taxed accordingly. Statistics say that approximately 20%-30% is lost at death due to taxes paid by heirs!

The ROTH IRA provides for a tax-free growth and distribution of interest earned both to the owner and the heirs of the ROTH IRA owner. The contribution to a ROTH IRA is not tax-deductible and there are contribution limits to be aware of as well as an income requirement similar to traditional IRAs. Life Insurance is similar to a ROTH IRA in that the beneficiaries receive the proceeds income tax free at the death of the insured. The contributions to a life insurance policy are not tax deductible.

Depending on the type of life insurance, there are some tax advantages to the cash values as well.

Board of Directors September 8, 2011 The meeting was held at the Home Office in St. Paul, MN. The meeting started at 9:35 am with Director George Gmach leading the Directors in the Opening Prayer and the Pledge of Allegiance. All members were present.

The prepared Agenda was used. Mr. Gmach moved, Director Joseph Kueppers seconded and the Board approved the August minutes.

The Investment Report was discussed by Chair Mike McGovern and Secretary Harald Borrmann.

Investment yields continue to decline modestly; therefore the Association will unveil a new annuity product with slightly reduced rates in order to maintain a healthy spread between annuity crediting rates and current yield. Management believes that being proactive in relation to rates is in the best interests of the Association’s members. Director Deb Pauly moved, Director Fran Barten seconded and the Board approved the Investment Report.

Mr. Borrmann presented Council By-laws for 24 councils. Mr. Borrmann suggested that the Board approve all By-laws as presented. Ms. Barten moved, Ms. Pauly seconded and the Board approved these By-laws.

Policy Governance: Mr. McGovern presented the following items for review and/or approval: Compensation and Benefits; Mr. Kueppers moved, Director John Maile seconded and the Board approved this policy.

Participation on Other Boards: Mr. McGovern provided the Board with his Other Board involvement.

Board Job Description: review with minor revisions was moved by Mr. Kueppers, seconded by Ms. Pauly and approved.

Mr. McGovern reviewed the Annual Delegate Convention. It was very successful with strong attendance; feedback from attendees was nearly universally positive. The breakout sessions had their best attendance ever

with very positive feedback. The Board reviewed the reports of the Constitution Committee, the Good of the Association Committee and the Resolutions Committee. It was noted that stronger involvement by Association officers was appreciated by these Committees.

Mr. McGovern and Mr. Borrmann reviewed the merger with American Fraternal Union; strong support by Catholic United delegates was noted.

Plans are moving forward with integration details and the goal remains to welcome AFU members in the most positive manner. A welcome kit is being assembled by the Marketing Department, with special emphasis on those members where Catholic United licensing will allow them to purchase new products from us.

Mr. Borrmann updated the Board on a project involving the Association’s actuary to determine an optimal dividend scale for the Association’s whole life products.

With regard to the ongoing Securities Lending issue, Mr. McGovern updated the Board on other notable participants in that issue. As time goes on, the likelihood of a positive outcome seems to increase.

Mr. Borrmann presented a Peer Comparison analyzing the Association versus a number of similar sized mutual insurers. While certain statistical comparisons are valid, the fundamental difference of a fraternal insurer being a benefit provider, whereas mutual insurers are essentially surplus accumulators, generates less valid peer comparisons than was hoped for. Mr. Borrmann will present a similar comparison with other fraternal insurers in October.

With regard to Risk Management, Mr. Borrmann updated the Board on the ongoing home office remodeling for enhanced safety and accessibility, improved DR site and home office data security and the newly instituted

updated imaging system.

The President’s remarks are as follows: Mr. Borrmann and Mr. McGovern are meeting privately with Department of Commerce Commissioner Rothman on Sept. 14 in order to establish a sound working relationship.

MIFSC is working to establish new and improved relationships with the many new members of the State House and Senate. Catholic United is a leader in these efforts.

The Seminary has record enrollment.

The Growing in Faith award and luncheon is being held 9/15 and Catholic United is now one of the sponsors.

World Youth Day was a big success with a number of Catholic United scholarship youths participating and sending back glowing reports.

The Ad Hoc Succession Committee is nearly finished with its work; the Nominating Committee will soon begin its work in that regard.

The credit union merger project continues on a positive trend.

The American Fraternal Alliance Annual Meeting is the last week of September; Mr. Borrmann is a part of their Board.

Life premium is up 25 percent; annuity premium is down 25 percent, both on target and according to plan.

New members are still off slightly; this is strongly correlated to annuity sales.

The Association continues to strongly emphasize new Sales Rep recruits.

Mr. Maile led the closing prayer and the meeting was adjourned at 2:15 pm.

Youth from Little Falls, Minn., raise $3,500 for group trip to youth conference with just a couple squeegees and some soap .

Youth from the Little Falls Tri-Parish put in their hands and pose together [below] at the Steubenville North Conference held at St. Thomas University July 29—31, 2011. These youth raised $3,500 through Project: Multiply to help offset transportation and tuition costs to attend the conference.

W

hen Diane Korver’s daughter returned from a Steubenville Youth conference as a high schooler in 2006, the mother saw the value of these faith formation events firsthand.

Ever since that first trip, Diane has been organizing Steubenville conference trips for the youth of the Tri-Parish community of Little Falls, Minn. In this her third year, more than 50 youth traveled to the University of St. Thomas in St. Paul, Minn., from July 29 — 31. To help offset the cost, Diane has looked to Catholic United Financial in her fundraising efforts.

Taking the $25 seed money provided through Project:Multiply, Diane and crews of 15-20 youth bought window washing supplies, and gathered in the church parking lot during Mass times. Armed with squeegees, soapy water, and good will, the troop washed the windows of every Mass attendee’s car. Meanwhile, Diane made an announcement at Mass of the good deed being done in the parking lot. She explains the need for scholarship funds and requested help to offset transportation costs to the conference from the congregation.

More compelling than the money raised through the free will offerings, though, is how the Holy Spirit is working among the young people of their parish.

Since its first year, the group has grown from 12 conference goers to more than 50. There

are also now a number of young people discerning religious vocations; namely, Diane’s son who has recently entered seminary. He credits the Steubenville North Conference as a major part of his spiritual journey. There has also been a rise in the amount of youth participating in perpetual adoration at the parish; certainly, the “Spirit is moving” in Little Falls.

At the end of Mass, the window washing crew stands at the doors to the church with buckets for collecting donations. This past year they raised over $3,500 including the $500 provided by Catholic United Financial in matching funds. With the help of this program, a strong connection is being forged between the Little Falls Tri-Parish and the young people of that area. Diane says that for weeks after the event, parishioners approach her all over town to say how much they appreciate what the youth are doing in the parish. One window washer was especially touched by the unsolicited prayers of one member of the congregation, “I don’t even know this person and they’re taking time to pray for me!”

All it took was a handful of window-washing supplies for the Tri-Parish youth of Little Falls to make a big impact. What can the youth of your parish do?

Life change triggers life purchase What things, subtle or serious, trigger a life insurance purchase? Life events, work changes and the advice of advisors are the strongest factors of influence cited by consumers seeking life insurance, according to a recent survey by LIMRA, an insurance

industry organization. Consumers said marriage, a birth or adoption, or the death of someone close influenced them to add or supplement their life insurance coverage. Twentyfive percent of consumers surveyed said they sought individual life insurance because of a change in their work status or they started a business.

Ten percent of surveyors age 65 and older said they purchased a life policy because they lost their group life insurance benefit from an employer.

Membership Drive 2012 - Your part If each Catholic United household recruited one new member to the Association – just one -- we could increase our total membership by 50 percent. Could you recruit just one new member? How? The Home Office will provide recruitment tools to members in the next year to help you spread the good news about Catholic United in a friendly and unobtrusive way. Here are some suggestions: Send a non-member a membership invitation.

We’ll be sending members simple invitation postcards that can be personalized to friends and family members. During the year, you can send the cards postagepaid to a non-member you know who could benefit from membership. We’re requesting that each Catholic United household send out at least one postcard to a non-member. These cards will be included in future issues of Our Catholic Journey. Or, call the Home Office at 1-800-568-6670 to request a set.

Invite non-members to a matching grant fundraiser or Gather4Good event. In addition to the events held by our local councils, we’ll be hosting communitywide Gather4Good service events in 2012 that will be similar to the Gather4Good events held in 2010. These events are great introductions to non-members about the Catholic United spirit of giving. We will publish Gather4Good dates and locations in future issues.
