This was the scene in Minot last month, as the flooding Souris River besieged the city. Huge spring rains and snowmelt quantities pushed Minot, its neighboring communities, and the Bismarck and Mandan area into the throes of high flood anxiety, frantic dike building modes, and devastating loss, in many cases.

he flooding and weather-related disasters here in North Dakota and across the country have made for an unimaginable start to summer. Our hearts, thoughts and prayers go out to so many across the state and nation who have lost so much to floods, fires, storms and tornadoes. In our state, that includes: n The farmers and ranchers who will suffer major economic loss because millions of acres of cropland never did dry out in time for spring planting. n The home and business owners in Minot and the farmers, ranchers and rural residents surrounding Minot who were inundated by the record flows of the Souris River coming from Canada. n The home and business owners in and around Bismarck-Mandan, Burleigh, Morton and Sioux Counties who were flooded by the record releases from Garrison Dam. n The farmers, ranchers and rural residents living near Devils lake, who since 1993 have been fighting that lake’s rise that continues to inundate thousands of acres of land each year. n The home and business owners, rural residents and farmers and ranchers in and around Fargo and West Fargo who fought a massive flood fight earlier this year. While the Red River waters were largely kept out of urban areas, the flooding did do significant damage in the outlying rural areas.

North Dakota’s electric cooperatives care deeply about the livelihood of our members and the people across the state. Co-ops are working diligently to keep power flowing to as many areas and to as many members as is safely and humanly possible. unfortunately, there may come a time when power is disrupted, and it’s unlikely it can be restored until flood waters recede and conditions are safe. We implore our customers and members to remember that water and electricity don’t mix. Please be absolutely certain that it’s safe to use electricity in flooded areas, or call your local electric cooperative or an electrician to make sure it’s OK to use electric power. your safety and the safety of the electric cooperative employees across the state is our number one concern.

What’s so unimaginable about the flooding along the Missouri River system this year is that so much has been has been built to prevent it. The Pick Sloan Project approved by Congress in 1944 authorized the construction of six dams along the Missouri River: Fort Peck in Montana; Garrison in North Dakota; and Oahe, Big Bend, Fort Randall

and Gavins Point in South Dakota. One of the primary purposes (some say the primary purpose) of the project was flood control, along with support for hydropower production, irrigation development, navigation, recreation, municipal and industrial water supply, and fish and wildlife production.

This year, flood control has taken center stage.

Each of the reservoirs in the system is operating at its maximum pool, technically called the exclusive flood control zone. Collectively, the six reservoirs can contain about 74-million-acre feet of water. ultimately, the 2,300 mile-long Missouri River joins with the Mississippi River at St. louis. That’s full, too. Because of record snowmelt and record rain, the entire system from the headwaters of the Missouri River in Montana to where the Mississippi River enters the Gulf of Mexico at New Orleans is overwhelmed with water.

We’ve posted some pictures and videos on our Web site at www.ndarec.com that provide a snapshot of Garrison Dam at work. The record releases there of 150,000 cubic feet per second (cfs) were going as planned (as of this writing), with about 60,000 cfs released through the spillway and another 90,000 cfs released through the power plant and emergency flood relief tubes.

The high releases from the main stem dams and the flooding throughout the state will take a few months to recede and many more months to recover from its damages. Epic floodwaters sweep I

n the spring of 2011, North Dakota’s flood wars moved west. The residents of Minot, Bismarck and Mandan leaped into frantic flood prevention and fleeing modes, as the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers shared shocking news about water releases necessary from waterway system dams. Heavy snowmelt and relentless spring rainfalls in the region forced these record release levels, with record riverway flooding the result.

The Souris River spilled over banks and levees to unimaginable levels, swallowing up vast portions of Minot and surrounding communities. In Minot, releases from upstream dams produced river elevations of 12 feet above flood stage, eclipsing a record which stood for 130 years. Of Minot’s 40,000 residents, 12,000 were ordered to evacuate, leaving schools, businesses, churches and 4,000 homes to be overtaken by floodwaters. Residents in neighboring Burlington and Sawyer were also evacuated due to overland flooding from streams in the Souris Basin. Residents, contractors, the Corps of Engineers and the N.D. National Guard erected many miles of new levees to provide protection for key community sections.

But, in a lot of areas, no protection was possible.

“No one thought it would be this bad,” said Tom Rafferty, Minot resident and Verendrye Electric Cooperative’s community relations manager. With headquarters in Velva, Verendrye is seriously threatened by river floodwaters, too. Rafferty, a Minot native, said there is shock and sadness in the community over what the swift currents of devastation delivered. As Minot residents navigated the troubled waters of late June, they found some solace in the cresting and dropping of the Souris River and were starting to take stock.

“We’re all going to be okay,” Rafferty said. “Folks are starting to focus their attention on what to do after all this water is gone, on cleaning things up and rebuilding.

Minot will be back.”

In Bismarck and Mandan, rising Missouri River waters came from record-setting Corps of Engineers releases from the six dams along the big waterway. In North Dakota, by mid-June, releases from Garrison Dam reached 150,000 cubic feet per second (cfs). The Garrison Dam spillways are open for the first time in the near 50-year history of the facility.

When Corps officials released news of these huge release levels, Bismarck and Mandan responded with a resolute, coordinated fury. They would have to rapidly create protection effective six feet above flood stage.

Community leaders, residents, the N.D. National Guard and the Corps combined to put up about 20 miles of new levees and place 11 million sandbags to buttress dikes, levees, neighborhoods, homes and businesses.

On Hoge Island in north Bismarck, Capital Electric Cooperative members Tyrel and Jenny Rau enlisted a small army of friends and family to build a sandbag ring dike around the new home they had to evacuate. The couple enjoyed their home and its surroundings for only three months before they learned it was one of many in the path of the swollen Missouri River.

“This summer we will try to get to the house daily with a boat, to manage our pumps and make sure that electricity is on,” Jenny says. “The future of our house is unknown at this time. We have shed many tears of sadness and fear, for what’s next for us in the future of our home,” she adds. continued on page 8

In late June, Gov. Jack Dalrymple announced that North Dakota and federal agencies opened three flood disaster recovery centers. The two centers in Minot and one in Bismarck will assist homeowners and business owners who have suffered losses due to flooding and want to apply for recovery programs. In June, the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) ruled that flooding disaster assistance for individuals would be made available to residents of Burleigh, Ward, Morton, Renville and McHenry counties. At press time, Dalrymple and the state’s congressional delegation were continuing efforts to encourage FEMA to broaden the individual flooding assistance program to more areas of the state.

Homeowners and business owners impacted by flooding should contact FEMA by phone or online to register before visiting one-on-one with recovery representatives at one of the three centers. Register with FEMA before visiting a recovery center by calling 1-800621-3362 (TTY 1-800-462-7585) or go online at www.fema. gov or www.disasterassistance.gov. The Minot disaster recovery centers are located at the Minot City Auditorium and at the Minot State University Student Center. The Bismarck disaster recovery center is located in the Bank of North Dakota. All centers are operating daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 

MAKE ELECTRICAL SAFETY YOUR FIRST PRIORITY Electric cooperatives are communicating closely and regularly with folks about safety concerns regarding the performance of submerged electric services. Co-op members are advised to: Keep outlets covered and dry between uses; Keep cords and plugs away from water; Never handle electrical items, plugs or outlets when wet; If an electrical product falls into water, do not try to retrieve it by reaching into the water; stay dry, avoid contact with water or metal surfaces, and unplug it immediately or shut off the circuit powering the item, and  Protect outlets near water with a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI).    

In addition, electric cooperative members who are evacuating property need to follow the cooperative’s instructions for shutting off power and for the eventual restoration of power.

Also, co-op members who need to operate standby generators to pump water should consult with the cooperative about the effective operation of those units in water peril situations. www.ndarec.com

BEK mobilizes flood protection forces

hen May’s news of widespread Missouri River flooding spread quickly in the Bismarck-Mandan area, BEK Communications, Steele, became a big part of the massive mobilization response.

Derrick Bulawa, BEK general manager, said the alarming news of the flooding reached the cooperative and its board of directors at the same time.

“We happened to have a board meeting on the day it was announced that the river elevation could go to 24 feet,” Bulawa said. “We went into the boardroom and told the directors it looks like it’s going to be big and that we need to have the ability to take care of BEK, our employees, our associated businesses and anybody that needs help in our area.”

The board responded by directing Bulawa to put a minimum number of staff on core cooperative business duty. The rest of the employees were to help the cooperative and area communities with the flood fight. BEK Communications serves an area in south-central North Dakota from the South Dakota border to north of Wilton, and from just outside Bismarck city limits to approximately 70 miles east of Bismarck.

Bulawa said an initial, rapid assessment was made of cooperative assets and physical resources at highest risk for experiencing flooding. He said the cooperative, which has mostly rural telecommunications services, saw that only a handful of their members were in flood peril. Contact was initiated with them to ascertain their needs and plans. By contrast, Bulawa said BEK Business Solutions, a network services subsidiary of the cooperative in Bismarck, faced several challenges related to the flood potential.

BEK Business Solutions is located on Memorial Highway, above and adjacent to Sertoma Park, right along rapidly rising river waters. Bulawa said the concern was that flooding in this area would interrupt electric power to BEK Business Solutions. As a result, this operational infrastructure was relocated to the BEK Communications Cooperative facilities in Menoken. This protected the core services of the business. Bulawa said they have also taken steps to help BEK Business Solutions customers should floodwaters interfere with their operations.

“BEK Business Solutions serves many businesses in Bismarck with phone systems, data networking services and nurse call systems, to name a few. We have been

watching the businesses that may be located in flood zones,” Bulawa said. BEK Business Solutions serves the city of Bismarck, local schools and health care providers.

A number of BEK Business Solutions customers asked for – and promptly received - contingency plans for continuing operations which could be disrupted by the flood.

Soon-to-be customers of BEK were also part of the flood response effort. Bulawa said approximately 30 residents near Bismarck were involved in a build-out of fiberbased telecommunications services. Flood threats have forced them to evacuate, and BEK has taken steps to stay in touch with them about the consequences of the interruption in these efforts.

Bulawa said another important part of the BEK mobilization was being the “good neighbor,” wherever that was needed. “As we were dealing with the impact on our employees, our current customers, our infrastructure and our future customers, we could then begin to help our neighborhoods,” Bulawa said. As part of this outreach, BEK staff came to the aid of the staffs of local affiliates Dakota Carrier Network and National Information Solutions Cooperative.

BEK was proactive, letting members and the community know the cooperative was available to assist.

“We sent an e-mail out to members asking them to call us if they needed help or assistance in any way, whether it’s sandbagging, moving furniture or anything,” said Jen Raab, BEK marketing supervisor. Raab said BEK displayed key flood watch links on its Web site and on its community cable television channel. Cooperative members and Bismarck area residents did contact them, and the BEK people responded.

BEK people were a mighty sandbagging force. “Some of our employees were helping other employees, some were working on their own homes, some were helping family members and some were helping close friends,” Raab said. BEK’s sandbaggers and movers could be found along Bismarck’s San Angelo Drive, at employee

and family homes located just off of Burleigh Avenue and various sandbagging, employee and family efforts in Mandan, to name a few. BEK made its trailers available for sandbag hauls and BEK people literally opened their homes. “I have some close friends we moved into my house,” Raab said.

Among the many things BEK is doing, Raab said they are also working with customers whose relocations have brought them into BEK territory, providing discounts for starting new telecommunications services.

For BEK, the May 25-June 5 period was one of nearly 24-7 flood protection activity. Bulawa said Brenda Waletzko, BEK’s human resources manager, coordinated all employee efforts. She handled incoming calls for help from the community, mobilized employees where needed and tracked where BEK personnel were helping.

BEK’s mobilization to play a community role in this year’s flood work was developed from recent lessons learned. Bulawa said BEK witnessed the way Linton, in its service area, was overtaken rapidly by spring flooding in 2009. He said the cooperative concluded it needed a systematic way of responding to those extreme challenges, and developed one.

“We’ve put in place a response strategy with response policies so that whenever anything comes up like this, we automatically go and refer to those strategies,” Bulawa said. “We identify what’s important – we have to protect the viability of the network services, the company, the staff, the companies that we support, the companies that support us and then the community. And, we follow that pretty aggressively.”

It’s perfect August weather – warm enough for just T-shirt and jeans, yet cool enough to be sweat-free.

Chuck Suchy steps onto the stage (which is a trailer) and says, “It’s 7:38 according to the Naval Academy.” The audience smiles and claps at the relaxed introduction because they don’t need or want any formalities at the ninth annual Suchyfest concert. They’re looking forward to listening to “The North Dakota Troubadour” because of the simple and honest way he describes rural life in his music.

Stolpe is not new to songwriting; she is an adjunct instructor of popular music at the University of Southern California in Los Angeles, and has worked with musical artists such as Faith Hill, Julianne Hough, Jimmy Wayne and Daniel Lee Martin. In 2007, Stolpe recorded her album, “Breaking Even.” She is also a published author on the craft of songwriting.

Stolpe attended college on the East Coast, lived for a while in the South, and now lives on the West Coast. She says her life’s experiences in different regions of the U.S. have provided her with a deep appreciation of her growing up years in the Midwest.

Utilizing her expertise in songwriting and memories of North Dakota, Stolpe set out to write a song that would leave a deliberate

he Medora Musical, always a spectacular event, will feature a special song in the 2011 performances.

In 2010, the Theodore Roosevelt Medora Foundation sponsored the “North Dakota Super Songwriting Competition,” and received more than 150 entries. Songwriters were asked for song submissions that captured the attributes of North Dakota and the spirit of the people who live there. The grand prize winner, “Always North Dakota” by Andrea Stolpe, was announced in January 2011. As a result, Stolpe was awarded a cash prize and her song will be included in the 2011 Medora Musical.

Andrea Stolpe was raised in Stillwater, Minn., and now resides in Los Angeles, Calif., with her husband, Jan, and their 18-monthold daughter, Hannah. Stolpe says while writing “Always North Dakota,” she tapped into her Midwestern roots and vivid memories of a trip through North Dakota in her adolescence.

“The summer after eighth grade, my dad rented an RV for three weeks, and our family traveled from Minnesota towards the west. Fortunately, I can clearly recall the sights and things we did on that trip. Before we left, I remember thinking we were about to embark on this adventure that would reveal a whole new world, but really, the Upper Midwest states share many similarities in lifestyles, culture and topography,” Stolpe says, “and I remember feeling like I wasn’t that far from home after all.”

Stolpe says the process of writing “Always North Dakota” spanned a week’s time. “I carried a notebook with me everywhere, and immersed myself in memories of my childhood, and our trip that eighth grade year.

As memories and images came to mind, I jotted them down one by one, and chose to use the most impressionable ones, like the thunderheads in the summer skies,” Stolpe says.

Indeed, upon dissecting the lyrics of “Always North Dakota,” one will find traces of Stolpe’s memories woven throughout. For example, the first line of the song is: “There’s a winding path, though a field of wheat, on a plot of land…” This, says Stolpe, refers to the driveway leading up to her grandparents’ farm

“I hoped to capture with this (song) a sense of awe for the beauty of North Dakota, and also to reignite a feeling of gratitude,” Stolpe says, adding, “Over time, sacred things become so much more sacred, ... much like the popular country song, ‘The House that Built Me’, farmland and cattle country is the state that raised me. In spite of my current location, I still feel that my home, and what defines me, is my upbringing in the Midwest.”

Stolpe’s husband, Jan, is a musical engineer and producer.

Together, they came up with the final version of “Always North Dakota.” As the grand prize winners in the “North Dakota Super Songwriting Competition,” the Stolpes were awarded $5,000.

“I wish I could say we spent the award money on something quite romantic or extravagant,” Stolpe says, “but we recently purchased a home and our chimney was in desperate need of repair. It has been wonderful to light a fire on cool evenings to warm the house.”

The Stolpes hope to travel to North Dakota and Minnesota this summer to attend the Medora Musical and to visit family. “This is headed to be the most exciting North Dakota State Fair we have ever offered,” Manager Renae Korslien said.

Great entertainment will headline the North Dakota State Fair, with Tracy Lawrence, Kid Rock with special guest Sheryl Crow, Lady Antebellum, Nitty Gritty Dirt Band, Charlie Daniels Band, Pat Benatar and Toby Keith all performing.

A concert by Nitty Gritty Dirt Band replaces the traditional classic car show and music event, and a second night of ranch rodeo has been added, with competitions July 25 and July 28. Bull riding is scheduled for July 26-27.

“As much as we enjoy the great new grandstand, that is only a small part of the fair,” Korslien added. “We are so proud to have stayed with our goal of continuing to be a safe, fun, educational family fair, with a concentration on agriculture and our youth.” This year’s ag education spreads across the grounds, Korslien said, with many exhibitors adding displays as well as hands-on experiences such as milking a cow or watching chickens hatch.

ummer is finally emerging from the water woes and wars of 2011. Vacationers are getting to great North Dakota locations, many of which found their “welcome” mats submerged under earlier floodwaters.

Medora, in western North Dakota, withstood a swollen Little Missouri River and is now welcoming visitors, with its history, western-themed food, fun and topflight entertainment. A key historical attraction in Medora is the Chateau de Mores State Historic Site.

Located southwest of Medora, this site memorializes the life and activities in North Dakota of Antoine de Vallombrosa, the Marquis de Mores, who arrived in 1883. Among his enterprises were a beef packing plant, a stagecoach line, a freighting company, refrigerated railway cars, cattle and sheep raising, land ownership, and a new town which he called Medora, in honor of his wife.

building, built in 1883 as the summer residence of the Marquis’ family. The Chateau is now a historic house museum and contains many of the original furnishings and personal effects of the de Mores family.

“It was the local people who called it a ‘chateau’ – they thought it was a castle,” said Dee Linn, the Chateau de More State Historic Site supervisor. Linn said, to the Marquis and Medora, it was just a hunting cabin, but special nonetheless because it was their first home after marriage.

Visits through the house are available during the summer months. There is an admission charge, with school and commercial bus tour group rates. Allow one hour for a visit.

The State Historical Society also conducts a History Alive! program at Chateau de Mores. Every summer Saturday and Sunday, actors bring key Chateau de Mores characters to life. For this year’s History Alive! programs, Lance Rustand, Dickinson, portrays the www.ndarec.com

Medora, the park has a bronze statue of the Marquis de Mores donated in 1926 by his sons. The statue is surrounded by a flagstone courtyard, the result of a 1938 WPA project; and  Chimney Park – on the west edge of Medora; the site once contained the packing plant, a slaughterhouse, three icehouses, several outbuildings, a railroad spur track and a corral. The building burned in 1907, leaving the tall, native clay brick chimney standing. A picnic area is located next to the plant location.

Rely on “F” words

The best-kept secret to raising children with North Dakota ethics and values is to use some “F” words. No, not that kind! The important “F” words are faith, family and friends.

Most North Dakota families have a strong tie to their faith. This is illustrated and enhanced by attending church regularly and through religious instruction. Christian schools and religious programs in our state are thriving because parents see the strong connection between parenting and faith.

Family connection is so important to North Dakotans. In fact, many families choose to live close to where they grew up so their children can enjoy the benefits of having grandparents involved in their daily lives. And who better to pass along important life lessons than grandma and grandpa along with other extended family members.

Hillary Clinton once said, “It takes a village to raise a child.” North Dakota is our village. In our communities, we enjoy the luxury of knowing most of the people who will be in contact with our children. And the beauty is these teachers, friends, parents, pastors, coaches and community members share the same North Dakota values which reinforce what parents are teaching their children.

So we can rely on the “F” words of faith, family and friends to raise our children into responsible, hard-working, kind, compassionate, fun-loving, well-adjusted, faith-filled adults.

My son said the following this past Mother’s Day: “Thank you for having the courage to say ‘no’ when I told you ‘everyone else is doing it.’ For having the wisdom to say ‘yes’ as often as you could. For having the presence of mind to know just what to say when I was facing tough choices. For having the heart to say, ‘I love you,’ in so many meaningful ways.

We have lived outside of North Dakota three times but we chose to raise our children here. We moved back to be near their grandparents and give them the opportunity to know their cousins in the bond that we both knew growing up on North Dakota farms. What better role models for our kids than family?

We wanted to raise children who could function independently as adults. They weren’t coddled but constantly reminded that life wasn’t fair, and that God is the one who evens things out and provides the great rewards. You just get out there and do your best.

I hope and pray to be around to pass this along to the grandchildren as well. We love our children dearly but truly appreciate them as adults as they are a true blessing to us.

Practice what we preach

When our son was born and placed in my arms for the first time, I remember thinking, “He’s finally here!” My second thought was, “Now what do we do?” Unfortunately, babies do not arrive with their own instructions manual.

My husband and I believe children learn what they live and live what they’ve learned. Teach your children compassion, tolerance and understanding. Teach responsibility by giving them small chores to do in exchange for a weekly allowance. Surround them with love, praise and encouragement. Discipline with fairness. There is no room for criticism, sarcasm or ridicule.

Life in North Dakota provides many opportunities for us to enjoy the outdoors. Show your child how to respect and take care of our land, water and wildlife.

Above all, we adults must practice what we preach because children really do learn by example.

recently moved from Cando to Oakes, so my mom could finish her master’s degree. It was hard to move to a new place because I had to leave friends and familiarity.

I traded them for new faces and places, knowing the people there may or may not like me. There was no surety that I would be accepted in my new school. For me, some of the hardest things to leave behind were 4-H and speech. It made me sad.

Not only were there new students to get to know, but I also had new teachers and neighbors, many of which were really nice. At school, some classes like social studies were “old stuff” for

me, as I had covered the same content last year and I was pretty much up-to-date on everything else. The only exception is I had to take algebra instead of the trigonometry I had prepared for.

My life has been hard since the move, but I’m not letting myself get discouraged. I know it takes time to make ties that are strong, and I do have a few friends I really like. I keep busy by riding horses and hanging out with friends.

If you have to move it may be sad, but the advice I have after moving six times is just to be yourself. Take part in the things you like to do. Let people get to know you, and get to know them.

Don’t hesitate in trying new things and taking part in activities that are popular among other students, in an effort to get to know them. But do not compromise your safety or standards to be popular. Be true to yourself, and even though you will have moved away from everything you know, you will find a way to start over and be happy.  Ariel Privatt, 13, is a 9th grader at Ellendale Public School where she is active in 4-H, horses, youth group and drama.

In John 2, Jesus turns water into wine. In Matthew 26, Jesus blesses bread and wine during the Lord’s Supper, and asks his disciples to eat and drink, and always remember him.

Food and drink can be found throughout the Bible. The scriptures are full of stories which share how Jesus ate with all kinds of people, nourishing their bodies and souls while teaching them about the love of God. The members of the Leeds Lutheran Church carry on the tradition of sharing their faith and food with those who are gathering, celebrating or mourning. Pastor Richard Budd, a member of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative, thanks the parish women for making countless meals for potlucks, weddings, funerals, fundraisers, banquets, conference gatherings and pastors’ meetings.

Some of the recipes taken from those meals were published in a church cookbook seven years ago. As the city approached its quasquicentennial celebration scheduled for July 14 to 17 in Leeds, church members discussed the popularity of the old cookbook and decided to create a new book as a partial fundraiser.

Pastor Budd’s wife, Ruth, used the church bulletin to ask parishioners to volunteer on the cookbook committee.

Evadean Baglien, Fern Buchta, Vicki Dulmage, Maxine Follman, Edythe Nelsen and Sharon Pederson stepped forward to help her gather and proof recipes, choose categories and dividers, and decide how to personalize the book.

While a few of the recipes were published in the former cookbook, Ruth says the majority are original.

“We tried to get family recipes that have been passed down through the ages,” Ruth describes.

The cover artwork was designed by Morgan Leapaldt.

Throughout the book, which features a three-ring binder and easel design, there are photos and table prayers.

North Dakota LIVING is proud to feature two of the cookbook’s recipes. Judy Ritterman shares her Hanson House Coleslaw recipe, and Junice Lynse shares her Krum Kake dessert. Because many in the community are of Norwegian or German descent, both recipes are often requested and prepared for church gatherings.

“We hope you will enjoy all the fine recipes found in the cookbook,” Pastor Budd invites. “We also hope you will hear the gospel that needs to go with it if we are to be fully fed. Enjoy!”

The church

Leeds Lutheran Church dates back to the pioneer congregations of Lake Ibsen Norwegian Evangelical Lutheran Church (1886) and Scandinavian Lutheran Trinity Free Church (1889), which merged in 1919 to form the present Leeds Evangelical Lutheran Church.

Over the course of its history, Leeds Lutheran Church has been involved in parish arrangements with several other congregations. It is currently a three-point parish with St. Petri Lutheran Church (rural York) and Zion Lutheran Church (Church’s Ferry).

Now, more than 125 families regularly attend Leeds Lutheran Church. According to Ruth, the church has an active Sunday school, bible studies, WELCA (women of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America) group and quilting group.

The cookbook

Ruth, who works as a neonatal nurse practitioner in Minnesota, ruptured her Achilles tendon around the time the anniversary cookbook was being produced. Typing recipes became her welcome distraction.

“It was good therapy in that I could type and be productive,” she reflects. “It was pretty time-consuming, but I enjoyed it.”

The goal of the committee was to create a cookbook that was well-organized and easy to read. Ruth says they are satisfied with the end result, which was ordered from Jumbo Jack’s Cookbooks in Audubon, Iowa. The company, which they found online, also printed the church’s first cookbook.

The current cookbook contains more than 700 recipes.

The committee ordered 1,500 books which can be purchased for $25. The amount includes postage and handling.

“We haven’t decided what to do with the money from this sale,” Ruth says. “Some will go to the celebration, and the rest will go to a charity.”

Leeds will celebrate its 125 anniversary July 14 to 17. A partial itinerary for the fourday event includes:  Thursday: a family steak fry, family games and bonfire;  Friday: a 5k marathon, the all-school reunion, a golf tournament, trap shoot and a barbecue under the tent;  Saturday: a petting zoo, craft fair, parade, music performance, gun action, dance and fireworks; and  Sunday: free golfing, church services, brunch and more reunions.

The first people to settle in and around Leeds were “squatters” who made their homes by filing on preemptions and later under the homestead law. Apparently there were no business places when the railroad came through in June 1886, but they provided for a siding which was named by the railroad company after the city of Leeds, England.

The St. Paul, Minneapolis and Manitoba Railroad Company named many of the towns from Church’s Ferry to Minot after English cities and towns at the request of English financiers and officials who had invested great sums of money in the company — hence the names Niles, Leeds, York, Knox, Rugby and Surrey.

Located 30 miles west of Devils Lake, Leeds has about 450 residents with approximately 20 businesses and three churches. The city has an elementary and high school, and an active fire department and ambulance crew. Many of the people who reside in Leeds commute to neighboring cities to work.

Rennie Anderson, parish secretary and member of Northern Plains Electric Cooperative, moved to Leeds with her parents in the 1960s. She has stayed because, “It’s a nice, caring community. People know each other, and care about one another.”

Ruth, who moved to Leeds with Pastor Budd in 1996, echoes the sentiment.

“It feels like home because the people are genuine and honest,” she summarizes.

1 8-oz. package ring macaroni, cooked ⁄2- ⁄4 cup sugar 11 ⁄2 cup Miracle Whip or mayonnaise 1 tsp. or more vinegar salt and pepper, to taste In large bowl, mix together the coleslaw mix, cucumber, green pepper, onion, celery and macaroni. Set aside. In small bowl, stir together the sugar, Miracle Whip, vinegar, and salt and pepper to taste. Stir the dressing into the vegetables to blend flavors. What we know about cows H

aving grown up on a farm that had both beef and dairy cows, I thought I knew quite a bit about cattle and cattle behavior. But, as is the case with so many things in life, the older you get, the less you know.

That reality hit home a couple of years ago when I did a story about a cattle behavior specialist who demonstrated how to herd and sort cattle. He said he could move cattle to a specific spot and “park” them there, and they’d stay there until he moved them, even if there was a field of alfalfa nearby with no fence in-between. Another researcher could get cattle to eat weeds. She had trained cows to eat plants like Canada thistle and leafy spurge, which cattle would normally avoid.

Perhaps my first exposure to a revolutionary cattle expert was in 1972. Dr. Jan Bonsma, from the University of Pretoria in South Africa, made a couple of appearances in North Dakota. I covered his appearance in Fessenden at the Wells County Fairgrounds. An estimated 1,800 people paid $5 each to listen to him.

One writer said, “Bonsma wowed what had to be the largest gathering of cattlemen in North Dakota for a good, long while.”

Bonsma was considered one of the world’s leading authorities on reproduction in beef cattle. He’d often say: “A bull should look like a bull, not a cow or steer.”

Bonsma had spent years studying the various breeds of cattle. This was when the so-called “exotic” or “continental” breeds were becoming popular in this country. Among other things, he knew how the breeds differed in the number of hairs they had per square inch, an indication of how adaptable they would be to colder climates. He was rather blunt when discussing the merits and the shortcomings of the various breeds of cattle. I remember him questioning the longevity of one of those breeds because, he said, its hoof size was too small.

But he was most known for his ability to gauge a cow’s reproductive performance. Many area ranchers brought their own cattle to be evaluated that day in Fessenden – cattle he’d never seen before. Bonsma had the uncanny ability to tell the age of a cow, how many calves she’d had, and whether she’d ever gone for a season without nursing a calf. Most often he was right.

A lot has changed in the beef cattle business since then. We surely know more about cattle behavior and cattle handling. Our cattle are better off because of it, and so are we, because they perform better. n Al Gustin is farm news director for KBMR and KFYR Radio in Bismarck.
