JOIN POLAR FEST Each February, more than a week of events lure you outside to embrace winter during Polar Fest. Take a polar plunge into the lake, run a frosty 5K and catch the brilliant fireworks display from the public beach.

GOING GREEN! Explore eight eco-friendly spots in the Detroit Lakes area to see deliberate efforts to minimize erosion, filter water and nurture habitat for fish, birds and wildlife. See the Green Tour Map at www. VisitDetroitLakes.com/things-to-do/ green-tour/. DUNTON LOCKS COUNTY PARK Bring a picnic lunch and sit under one of two covered shelters. Other fun activities include bike and hiking trails, groomed cross country skiing trails and fishing. See the interpretive signage about the cultural and natural history of the area. Unique to the area, a tram transports watercraft from Muskrat Lake to Lake Sallie. The tram operates weekends and holidays from about noon to dusk. Dunton Locks is located next to the

DNR Fish Hatchery, 2.5 miles south of Detroit Lakes on Highways 59, 6 and 19. SUCKER CREEK PRESERVE More than 60 acres of marsh, trout stream, maple-basswood forest and prairie are being preserved for future generations. Sucker Creek features easy parking for cars and buses, a half-mile handicapped accessible path, amphitheater and interpretive signs. A marshwalk is accessed by the Janet Boe Memorial Path. Located east of Detroit Lakes on Highway 10, turn south on 290th, then go 3/10 mile. For info, visit www.ci.detroitlakes.mn.us and go to recreation. TAMARAC NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE This 43,000 acre refuge includes over 20 lakes, three rivers and thousands of marshes and woodland ponds.

Over 250 birds, such as the Bald Eagle, Trumpeter Swan and Ruffed Grouse call Tamarac home. Search for white tailed deer, porcupine, otter, black bear and gray wolf. The Visitor Center is open weekdays year round, as well as summer and fall weekends. The center features an exhibit area, bookshop and auditorium. Free literature is available for self-guided auto tours and hikes. Tamarac Refuge is located 18 miles northeast of Detroit Lakes. For details, go to www.fws.gov/midwest/tamarac/. HAMDEN SLOUGH NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE This refuge was selected as an Important Bird Area for Minnesota. Over 225 prairie birds, such as LeConteâ€™s Sparrow, prairie chickens and godwits make Hamden their

home. A Prairie Chicken viewing blind may be reserved in the spring for a unique closer view of the birds. The refuge also offers excellent viewing of marsh and shorebirds, especially during spring and fall migrations. Look for terns, sandpipers, rails, plovers and phalaropes. Naturalists will appreciate the restoration of wetlands, native grass and wildflowers. DETROIT LAKES WETLAND MANAGEMENT DISTRICT The U.S. Fish & Wildlife Service manages these prairie and wooded areas that provide habitat for over 280 bird species,

including Greater Prairie-Chickens, longspurs, Sandhill Cranes, sandpipers, wrens, sparrows, meadowlarks and 29 waterfowl species. Look for whitetailed deer, bluebirds, Trumpeter Swans, woodpeckers, prairie sparrows, Osprey and waterfowl. Hike or ski the 1.5 mile Prairie Marsh Trail during daylight hours at the Headquarters WPA, one mile north of Detroit Lakes on North Tower Road. MINNESOTA’S FIRST INTERNATIONAL BIRDING TRAIL Detroit Lakes is located in a unique transition zone where prairie meets hardwood and conifer forests. This collection of habitats provides

homes for more than 275 species of birds! Birders from across the country come to the Detroit Lakes Festival of Birds each May to see “life birds” and continue along Minnesota’s first birding trail. Established as the Pine to Prairie Birding Trail in 1998, the route starts south of Detroit Lakes on Highway 59 and continues north for a total of 200 miles and 45 viewing sites. In 2009, the trail was extended north to Winnipeg, Canada for a total of 75 sites along the 500-mile Pine to Prairie International Birding Trail. From a downtown mall located in historic buildings, specialty shops, department stores to super discount stores, the options are nearly endless. For justpicked freshness, catch the farmers market in Peoples Park each Tuesday and Saturday, May - October. Take in a lakes tradition by perusing tables of

treasures at the weekend flea market. To quench your appetite, order some munchies on a patio overlooking the lake, enjoy dinner and a cocktail at a fine restaurant or grab a quick

bite at numerous fast food options. Bring your laptop and relax with your favorite refreshment at a wireless Internet coffee shop or tavern. ARE YOU GAME? The Shooting Star Casino, Hotel, and Event Center is located 35 miles north of Detroit Lakes in Mahnomen. Business at the Lakes

BUSINESS DISTRICT Businesses include a 135,000 square foot downtown shopping center, department stores, specialty shops, insurance/ financial and other professional services, grocery, dining, theaters,

convenience stores, discount superstores, manufacturing and industrial firms. In 2007, Detroit Lakes rang up about 62 percent of the $396 million in retail sales in Becker County. In-city motels and hotels provide 400 rooms to visitors. Resorts, bed & breakfast inns and campgrounds provide many additional units in the Detroit Lakes area. A number of facilities in and near Detroit Lakes offer meeting and conference space for groups up to 350 people. BUSINESS DEVELOPMENT AND EXPANSION Community Development Department staff can provide business owners with a variety of information concerning financing, zoning, demographics, labor force, utility rates and financial incentives. They offer assistance in preparing loan applications, financial packaging and tax increment financing. The Community Development Director, Larry Remmen, may be contacted at 218-847-5658. BIG IN BECKER COUNTY Tourism and agriculture are comparable in their contribution to the gross state product. Travel and tourism in Minnesota generates $11 billion in gross sales. According to Explore Minnesota Tourism, in 2009 the leisure and hospitality industry employed 1300 people in Becker County with gross sales of over $62 million. Among agricultural producers in the nation, Minnesota ranks in the top ten states. In 2007, Becker County had 1200 farms, according to the United States Department of Agriculture. The average size farm had 330 acres. Dairy, beef cattle, hog, sheep and turkey farms are among the most common. Top crops harvested in the county include soybeans, oats, wheat and corn.

Moving to the Lakes

DETROIT LAKES is the seat of Becker County. The county population is 32,500 and the city has 8,569 citizens, according to 2010 statistics. About 17,000 people hold jobs in Becker County. Within Becker County, industries with the greatest number of employees include government; trade, transportation and utilities; manufacturing; and education and health services. EDUCATIONAL FACILITIES Detroit Lakes School District #22 includes two elementary schools, a middle school, and a high school. Students also attend three parochial schools. Enrollment of 1300 students at the Detroit Lakes campus of Minnesota State Community and Technical College work toward earning an Associate of Arts degree, Associate in Fine Arts or Associate in Science degree, or a University Transfer degree by completing two years of a Bachelor’s degree. A Community Education and Recreation program serves the area with programs such as adult basic education, GED, arts and youth programs, driver’s education and recreation.

HOUSING The home ownership rate in Detroit Lakes is estimated at 65 percent. Some of the housing alternatives include lakeshore lots, residential city lots, rural development, hobby farms, apartments, condominiums, and townhouses. TRANSPORTATION The city of Detroit Lakes is served by a taxi service, two non-emergency health vans, two separate transit vehicles and two vehicle rental firms. Amtrak stops nightly at The Depot at the Washington Avenue/Hwy 10 corner. Jefferson Bus Lines makes a daily west and eastbound passenger stop in Detroit Lakes at The Depot. The city airport is located on the western edge of Detroit Lakes along Highway 10. Field elevation: 1396’. The 4500’ x 75’ asphalt runway serves light twin engine to single engine aircraft. Other services: fuel, parts/ maintenance, overnight hangar and float service.

MEDICAL SERVICES A wide range of medical services is available in Detroit Lakes. A regional health center licensed as an 87-bed acute care hospital provides a diversity of services including emergency room and a facility for kidney dialysis. Two clinics provide primary and specialty care, with extended hours available at a daily walk-in urgent care clinic. A 7 day clinic provides express care and occupational medicine. Additional health care businesses include professional MRI imaging; specialty face, ears, nose, neck and throat clinic; therapy, massage and chiropractic services; sleep services; behavioral health services and hospice. Ambulance staff supply advanced life support for emergency medical calls in the Becker County area. Seniors have several options for housing and services: assisted living, memory care, mobility services, adult day care, medical supply services, transitional and home care, rehabilitation and nursing homes.

THE NAME “DETROIT” came about when a French Catholic Priest camped on the shore of the lake with a view of the sun setting across the water. The water was low and revealed a sandbar, creating a narrow strait that glistened in the light of the setting sun. The Priest exclaimed, “What a beautiful detroit,” meaning “strait” in French. Consequently, the city was named Detroit. Due to continuous postal mix-ups between Detroit, Minnesota and the betterknown Detroit, Michigan, a special election was held

DETROIT LAKES— A CITY WITH A PAST From the 1830’s until the 1860’s, one of three branches of the Red River Ox Cart trails, which ran from St. Paul to Canada, came right through the area later to be settled as Detroit. Settlement of this area began in 1871, as the Northern Pacific Railroad etched its way westward through Becker County. Detroit founder, Colonel George Johnston came to Minnesota in 1871 to select lands for the New England Colony. In 1873, Detroit Township boasted the first grain warehouse built west of Duluth on the Northern Pacific Railroad.
