CWI Essentials 30 years

Join us throughout the year as we celebrate 30 years in business The CWI story began more than 30 years ago with a crafty couple's simple hobby. In their spare time, Karen and Farley Piper enjoyed tackling creative projects like silk flower construction, macrame, needlepoint and sand art.

As Farley told the Columbus (Ohio) Messenger newspaper in 1980, "I enjoyed working on craft projects personally and I had always wanted to be in business for myself."

That desire led to the Pipers attending craft shows and ultimately opening their own shop, Crafts 'n Things, in Columbus in 1975.

Following early success with the store, they opened another location in Columbus when Karen's parents, Bob and Ruth Vincent, came to town a few years later.

In 1981, the young entrepreneurs decided that selling craft supplies to mom and pop shops around central Ohio was the way to go, so they opened a warehouse on Columbus' east side.

With their three children, Ariane, Tara and Barrett, snoozing at the end of aisles or playing with beads, the young couple continued to maintain their stores while diving headfirst into the wholesale business.

An ambitious saleswoman named Aileen Roberts convinced Farley she could hit the road and find customers throughout Ohio and beyond. One of the company's original employees, Aileen would later create the first catalog for the business and she continues to work for the company today.

Thirty years after its inception, CWI Gifts has more than 70 employees, a 70,000 square-foot warehouse, a highly visible trade show presence and a sophisticated shipping operation.

The company has carved out a niche as a leader in the country gift and home decor industry with quality products, affordable prices and top-notch service.

As Karen Piper pointed out in that early newspaper article, "We're willing to help fellow craftsmen with any type of problem they might have."

While much has changed over the years, that commitment to customers remains our top priority.
