hese quotes evoke analogies and dichotomies: all are by writers whose native language is Spanish; each writer lived in a di≠erent era and was born in a di≠erent place; and each of them begins his writings with the line, in a place within La Mancha . . . and then turns towards Patagonia by way of Andalusia. It is that opening line that draws out my lost homeland—my own dichotomy between the Andes and the Guadarrama, the olive groves and the Araucarias, the sunsets of the Pacifc and the sunrises of the Mediterranean.

The governance of an infnitely larger world than what was suspected led to the print and publishing industry becoming the frst forms of global communication. As we well know, whoever has the power to inform has the power to misinform; whoever has the authority to educate has the authority to indoctrinate.

“Analogies” is the notion of the universal commonality that things have in their particularity. It allows us to argue on the basis of what we can all recognize in the physical or intangible world of ideas because we have already experienced it (meaning) or imagined it (thought) once.

We are surprised to fnd some familiarity in what we consider unknown, but it also captivates us. When analogies appear, similarities are understood in the discrepancies of what it is to be di≠erent because duality is the minimal expression of nature.

This raises the value of duality as a natural fact because it reminds us that reality has three dimensions and at least two opposite faces impossible to see simultaneously, which urges us to refect, to eliminate prejudice, and to establish reasonable doubt.

Sometimes we forget that written words, similar to images, are shapes, colors, lights and shadows. They are chiaroscuros that help us understand the part of reality that is visible to us and a necessary condition of our visual language. They determine much of the perception we have of the world because images are assigned concepts to help us understand them, and concepts are assigned images to make ideas comprehensible. Both might be useless if there were not a light on somewhere to enlighten us. Perhaps that is why wisdom is always associated with enlightenment.

Nothing and no one will prevent the continued doxas and paradoxas, dogmas and dissents, conficts of interest, lack of balance or contrasted dualities.

“Analogies and Dichotomies” suggests a unifying refection which speaks of universalities without ignoring the peculiarities; it transforms the clash of frontiers into geographical vicinity, not a confrontation of insoluble opposites.

os tres textos evocan analogías y dicotomías: todos ellos han sido escritos por autores cuya lengua madre es el Castellano; cada escritor vivió en distintas épocas y nació en distintos lugares; todos ellos trazan una línea que comienza “en un lugar de La Mancha” y gira hacia la Patagonia pasando por Andalucía. Es la línea que dibuja mi Patria Perdida, mi propia dicotomía entre los Andes y el Guadarrama, los Olivares y las Araucarias, los atardeceres del Pacífco y los amaneceres del Mediterráneo.

La gobernanza de un mundo infnitamente más grande de lo que se sospechó hasta entonces hizo de la imprenta y la industria editorial la primera forma de comunicación global. Y como bien sabemos, quien tiene el poder de informar tiene el poder de desinformar; quien tiene la autoridad para educar tiene la autoridad para adoctrinar.

“Analogías”, porque es la noción de lo común o universal que pueden tener las cosas en su particularidad. Permite argumentar en base a lo que todos podemos reconocer en el mundo físico o intangible de las ideas, porque ya lo hemos experimentado [sentido] o imaginado [pensado] alguna vez.

Nos extraña encontrar cierta familiaridad en lo que consideramos desconocido, pero también nos embelesa. Cuando aparecen analogías se comprenden similitudes en las discrepancias de lo que ha de ser diferente, porque la dualidad es la mínima expresión de la naturaleza.

Plantea el valor de la dualidad como un hecho natural, de las contradicciones necesarias, porque nos recuerda que la realidad tiene tres dimensiones y al menos, dos caras opuestas imposibles de ver simultáneamente, que nos insta a refexionar, a no prejuiciar, a establecer la duda razonable.

A veces olvidamos que tanto la palabra escrita como las imágenes son formas, colores, luces y sombras; claroscuros que nos ayudan a comprender la parte de la realidad que es visible para nosotros al condicionar necesariamente nuestro lenguaje visual. Determinan gran parte de la percepción que tenemos del mundo porque a las imágenes les asignamos conceptos, y a los conceptos les asignamos imágenes para hacer las ideas comprensibles.

Ambas serían inútiles si no hubiese en alguna parte una luz encendida que nos ilumine.

Quizás por eso cuando se habla de sabiduría se asocia siempre con la iluminación.

Nada ni nadie impedirá que siga habiendo doxas y paradoxas, dogmáticos y discrepantes, confictos de intereses, falta de equilibrio y dualidades contrastadas.

“Analogías y Dicotomías” sugiere una refexión unifcadora, que habla de universalidades sin ignorar las particularidades, transformando el choque de fronteras en vecindad geográfca, no en una irresoluble confrontación de opuestos.

The reptilian button

El botón reptiliano

Luca Pacioli’s book Divine Proportion, illustrated by Leonardo da Vinci, and Albrecht Dürer’s work in descriptive geometry both retain their authority today; the advent of printing and paper did much to establish our understanding of human proportions. A universal pattern in Nature, based on the Golden Mean, gives rise to an ideal of beauty.

Marketers, advertisers and propagandists seek the “reptilian button” we all harbor, a switch for our own internal hard drives, where the frst emotions of childhood are recorded as longing and memory, preventing us from reasoning coolly and clearly, from focusing on product utility, price or quality, and obscuring fallacies and false promises.

Yet even though the Golden Ratio is a proven reality in, for example, the relationship among the lengths of our fnger bones, the proximal, intermediate and distal phalanges, there is a problem that many of us share: some of us have big heads relative to our height, or we have no neck, have short femurs or are fat. Fashion made for allegedly perfect bodies simply makes us look ridiculous and ugly. The classical ideal, perhaps in awareness of this fact, simply opted for the toga as the fairest garment for all.

Un patrón universal de la Naturaleza con base en el Número Áureo para un ideal de belleza.

El mundo del marketing, la publicidad y la propaganda, buscan el “botón reptiliano” que todos llevamos dentro, que enciende en nuestro disco duro, donde se grabaron en forma de ilusión y recuerdos las primeras emociones de nuestra infancia, lo que evita que razonemos con frialdad y claridad, que nos ocupemos por ejemplo, de la utilidad de los productos, precio o calidad, y que ocultan las falacias y falsas promesas.

Un problema que muchos tenemos, es que aunque la Proporción Áurea es una realidad comprobada, por ejemplo, en la relación de medidas en nuestros dedos, entre la falange, la falangina y la falangeta, algunos tenemos la cabeza grande en relación a la altura, carecemos de cuello, tenemos los fémures cortos o estamos gordos. Las modas hechas para cuerpos supuestamente perfectos, sencillamente nos hacen ver ridículos y feos. El ideal clásico, quizás advertido de esto, optó simplemente por la toga como la vestimenta más justa para todos.

When warm light turns cold

Cuando la luz cálida se vuelve fría

Our globalized civilization is no longer capable of surviving without electrical energy.

The word “electricity” is derived from the Latinized Greek word elektron, which refers to amber, a crystal-like fossilized resin, generally golden in color. Mythology tells us that when Phaethon, son of the solar deity Helios, was killed, his grieving sisters turned into poplar trees, and their tears turned into an amber resin, or elektron, upon falling into the Eridano, the river that we now call the Po. Elektron gave rise to the word elektor, referring to a “radiant sun.” It is no coincidence that since the beginning of time, humankind has used the image of the Sun as a symbol of power.

Highly prized in antiquity, amber was the reason for construction of the Amber Road, a route that originated in the Baltic region, where one of the world’s largest deposits of amber is found. This amber should not be confused with the Arabic term anbar, which means “foating on the sea.” That amber is a complex product which comes from the intestines of sperm whales and, unlike the resin, is found foating on water. As time passes, this “whale amber,” or ambergris, takes on a complex aroma that is indescribably pleasing and captivating. For this reason, ancient people used ambergris as a fne condiment in Mediterranean and Arabic cuisine and burned it as incense. It continues to be used today as a precious essence in the world of haute perfumes.

Sperm whales were almost exterminated after they were discovered to harbor in their heads a kind of liquid gold, an exceptional wax that could be used to make candles, creating a brilliantly white source of illumination. This odorless wax produced no smoke and burned cleanly and completely without dripping. For hundreds of years, it illuminated the most important noble estates and royal palaces of a globalized Europe, until gas and kerosene came onto the scene in the eighteenth century.

Ron Howard’s 2015 flm, In the Heart of the Sea, was the inspiration for this painting, which pays homage to Howard’s directorial work. Historical cinema owes much to painting, and these days, we painters also owe much to flmmakers and directors of photography. We all are indebted to the scenic arts, a family in which painting is the smallest sibling but also the most venerable, the longest-lived. I never would have connected Moby Dick with the painted murals and frescoes that decorate the voluptuous ceilings of Golden Age European palaces, especially the spaces that were created from the Baroque imagination. If those ceilings had not been intended to be illuminated during festive nights, decorating them would not have justifed the enormous investment of resources and talent. Breathing life into the sets of the Commedia dell’Arte for its audiences required hundreds of candles, candelabra, chandeliers . . .

Nuestra civilización globalizada ya no es capaz de sobrevivir sin energía eléctrica. La palabra electricidad deriva del griego latinizado elektron, ámbar, una resina fósil cristalina generalmente de color dorado. Según el mito, cuando Phaëton hijo de Helios, el Sol, fue asesinado, sus hermanas apenadas se convirtieron en álamos, y sus lágrimas en resina de ámbar, o elektron, cayendo al Erídanos, actual río Po. De elektron deriva elektor, que se asociaba con el concepto de “sol radiante”. No es una casualidad que desde el principio de los tiempos el hombre haya utilizado la imagen del Sol como símbolo de poder.

Muy apreciado en la antigüedad, el ámbar generó la conocida como “Ruta del ámbar” desde las regiones bálticas donde se encuentra uno de los mayores yacimientos del mundo.

No se debe confundir este ámbar con la voz anbar de origen árabe, que quiere decir “que fota en el mar.” Este ámbar, un complejo producto que procede de los intestinos de los cachalotes y que suele fotar en el agua a diferencia de la resina. Con el paso del tiempo este ámbar de ballena llamado ámbar gris, cambia a un aroma indescriptiblemente agradable y cautivador. Por eso desde la antigüedad se utilizó como fno condimento en la cocina mediterránea y árabe, se quemó como incienso y aún sigue siendo una preciada esencia en el mundo de la alta perfumería.

El cachalote fue prácticamente exterminado a partir del momento que se descubrió que en su cabeza albergaba oro líquido, la cera de mejor calidad para iluminar, que por ser más brillante y la más blanca, marcó el primer patrón de iluminación conocido como “candelas”. Inodora, no producía humos y al consumirse completamente no goteaba.

Durante siglos iluminó las casas señoriales y palacios reales más importantes de la Europa globalizada, hasta la llegada del gas o el keroseno en el siglo XVIII. La película En el corazón del mar, del director Ron Howard [2015] fue la inspiración de esta pintura y sirva de homenaje a su trabajo. El cine de historia debe mucho a la pintura y hoy los pintores debemos mucho a los cineastas y directores de fotografía. Todos tenemos una deuda con las artes escénicas, de las que la pintura es la hermana menor, pero la más duradera.

Nunca habría relacionado Moby Dick con las pinturas murales y frescos que decoraron los voluptuosos cielos de los palacios de los siglos de oro de Europa, especialmente aquellos salones producto del sentimiento Barroco. No se hubiesen invertido tantos recursos y talentos en decorar los techos si no hubiesen sido previstos para ser iluminados en las noches de festa. Para que toda esa escenografía cobrara vida con los invitados representando la Comedia del Arte, hacía falta encender cientos de velas, candelabros, lámparas de araña . . .

Años sin verano

The earth’s continental plates and islands that emerge from the depths of the sea show us that nothing is static in nature. The marine foor of the Pacifc Ocean shifts about 12 centimeters every year; someday, the Hawaiian Islands will be visible from the coasts of Asia. The Indian subcontinent will keep bumping into the Eurasian plate, the peaks of the Himalayas will keep getting taller, and there will be more catastrophic earthquakes and tsunamis like those in Sumatra in 2004, in Chile in 2010, and in Japan in 2011.

Darwin began to understand the magnitude of the geological scale of time in coastal Chile, in the southernmost part of the world, when he found fossils of seashells in the Andes at an altitude of 3,000 meters. He then imagined how much time it would take for all of that to move to the mountaintops from the ocean foor. Not long before, he had witnessed the eruption of the Osorno volcano and the terrible consequences of the subsequent mega-earthquake and tsunami when the Beagle dropped anchor in Conception Bay in 1835.

It has been speculated that many of Turner’s rosy skies were due not only to smoke from the chimneys of the incipient Industrial Revolution, but also to the added e≠ects of the eruption of the Tambora volcano in Indonesia. It was such an impressive explosion that ash particles ascended thousands of kilometers and dispersed all across the terrestrial globe. Mortality rates in Europe have been analyzed, and simulations appear to confrm this tragic reality. The next year, 1816, was known as “the year without summer,” months and days during which the Sun never shone at all and a persistent fog polluted and yellowed the atmosphere. Coincidence or not, it was one night that year that Mary Shelley wrote one of the most frightening stories ever created, etching Frankenstein into our collective imagination.

La tierra continental y las islas que emergen de las profundidades del mar indican que en la naturaleza nada es estático. El fondo marino del océano Pacífco se desplaza a razón de unos 12 centímetros cada año, las islas de Hawai un día se verán desde las costas de Asia.

La placa Índica seguirá chocando contra la Euroasiática y seguirá elevando las cumbres del Himalaya, y volverán a sucederse los terremotos y tsunamis catastrófcos como el de Sumatra de 2004, el de Chile o el de Japón de 2010.

Darwin comprendió la magnitud del tiempo a escala geológica en las costas de Chile, en el sur del mundo, cuando encontró fósiles de conchas marinas a 3.000 metros de altitud en la Cordillera de los Andes. Entonces supuso el tiempo necesario para que todo eso se moviera hasta las alturas desde el fondo marino. Poco antes había sigo testigo presencial de la erupción del volcán Osorno y de las horribles consecuencias del posterior megaterremoto y tsunami cuando el Beagle echó anclas en la bahía de Concepción en 1835.

Se ha especulado que muchos de los arrebolados cielos de Turner no sólo se debieron a los humos de las chimeneas de la incipiente Revolución Industrial, sino a los efectos añadidos de la erupción del volcán Tambora, en Indonesia. Fue una explosión tan impresionante que las partículas de cenizas ascendieron miles de kilómetros y se dispersaron por todo el globo terráqueo. Se han analizado las tasas de mortandad en Europa y las simulaciones parecen demostrar esta trágica realidad. El año siguiente, 1816, fue conocido como “el año sin verano,” meses y días en que el Sol nunca brilló del todo y una persistente niebla enrarecía y amarilleaba el ambiente. Invented history

La historia inventada

I share the philosophies of those who postulate that Human Beings, like all forms of life, are essentially regional biological entities; that is, they remain connected, in an inextricable and ancient way, to geography, to ecosystems, to climate and to natural resources.

Historical cultures and races are based on this reality; they represent ways of being and existing that are situated at specifc points in time and space. The frst circumnavigation of our planet in 1522 marked the start of the globalization of trade, but it did not globalize people’s ways of thinking.

We have yet to write a universal history of art. Modernity is not an absolute value in the art of engineering. There is nothing new on the face of the Earth. Needs change, and technologies and their uses change even more. It has always been important to discern between authority and mediocrity, between truth and falsehood. Humans seem to move in an infnite loop; evolving in a positive direction is more of a desire than an actual endeavor.

Alternatives to an antiquated notion of Universal History could be consolidated if there were a truly universal approach, if there were equity, philosophy without borders, a pure “love of wisdom”—as they say Pythagoras responded when asked to what he dedicated himself.

Archeological relics do sometimes appear in the least expected moments, but they need to be sought and unearthed intentionally. And a search for them is in indeed underway, consuming large budgets, but it is a selective search. There are teams of highly trained researchers all around the World, but funding goes only to only those who seek or have found pearls that can be added to the string of beads that makes up a preconceived story.

We have been indoctrinated to understand the world as the image that a lens produces when bending light, as if reality obeyed the laws of perspective. Human language and the human world through the ages are not necessarily mirror images of reality. This helps us understand how it can be that other cultures never expressed themselves using visual analogies. Another language, perhaps more powerful than any, is spoken through numbers and geometric symbols, without apparent content or recognizable shapes, but full of meaning to the informed observer or reader. We could conclude that opposites meet in the end, because in societies that have expressed themselves using abstract signs, or more or less fgurative glyphs, such expression holds the same secrets as the written word. Only those who know can gain access to it—and use it.

Comparto las flosofías de aquellos que postulan que el Hombre, como toda forma de vida, es una entidad biológica esencialmente regional, es decir, mantiene un vínculo indisoluble y antiguo con la geografía, con los ecosistemas, con el clima y los recursos naturales. Las razas y las culturas históricas tienen ese fundamento, son formas de ser y estar en relación con las coordenadas espaciales y temporales. La primera circunnavegación de nuestro planeta en 1522 marcó el inicio de la globalización del comercio, pero no globalizó las mentalidades.

La historia del arte universal está por escribir. La modernidad no es un valor absoluto en el arte de las ingenierías. Nada nuevo hay sobre la faz de la Tierra. Cambian las necesidades, cambian sobre todo, las tecnologías y sus propósitos. Desde siempre hubo que discernir entre la autoridad y la mediocridad, entre la verdad y la falsedad. El hombre parece girar en un bucle infnito, la evolución en un sentido positivo, es un deseo más que un empeño.

Alternativas a la Historia Universal decimonónica sólo podrían ser consolidadas si hubiese una verdadera universalidad en los planteamientos, equidad, flosofías sin fronteras, puro “amor a la sabiduría”, cómo dicen que respondió Pitágoras cuando le preguntaron a que se dedicaba.

Los restos arqueológicos a veces aparecen en el momento menos esperado, pero hay que buscarlos y desenterrarlos con toda intencionalidad, y de hecho se buscan, se invierten grandes presupuestos, pero de forma selectiva. Equipos de investigadores altamente capacitados los hay en todo el Mundo, pero son fnanciados sólo aquellos que buscan o han encontrado las perlas necesarias para agregar al collar de una historia preconcebida.

Hemos sido adoctrinados para entender el mundo como la imagen que produce una lente al curvar la luz, como si la realidad obedeciera a las leyes de la perspectiva. El mundo y el lenguaje de los hombres a través de los tiempos no son necesariamente refejos ópticos de la realidad. Así se puede llegar a entender como otras culturas nunca se expresaron por medio de las analogías visuales. Otro lenguaje, quizás más poderoso que cualquier otro, se expresa a través de los números y símbolos geométricos, sin contenido aparente, sin formas reconocibles, pero llenas de sentido para un observador o lector instruido. Se podría concluir que los extremos se tocan, porque las sociedades que se han expresado mediante signos abstractos o glifos más o menos fgurativos, encierran los mismos secretos que la palabra escrita. Solo los que saben puede hacer uso de él.

Cavalier perspective

Perspectiva caballera

The German term “Weltlandschaft” has no literal translation, but it establishes the notion of “the landscape of the world” in art, an aerial panoramic view conceived long before the frst human ascended in a hot-air balloon. “Weltlandschaft” is the scenography of the world where the human comedies and dramas of men turned into tiny actors unfurl across the landscape of the universe, silent narratives that tell us about whatever they want to tell, including that which is prohibited, that which is often told between the lines.

We see it in paintings by Patinir, Bruegel or Hieronymus Bosch. Historians refer to an imaginary and bucolic landscape, but it greatly resembles certain regions in northern Europe.

Aerial perspective was learned by observing light in nature, long before the French impressionists. Whatever is far away loses contrast, becomes grey and tinged with turquoise or ultramarine blue, depending on the color of the sky.

Cavalier perspective is one of the basic ways of projecting a three-dimensional body in one plane. After the invention of printing, it became popular due to the proliferation of atlases and engravings that show the ports and cities of the world with panoramic bird’s-eye views. Geometric projection was more than a valuable system of realistic representation for painters; it was also used in military and commercial cartography and in construction engineering for buildings and fortifcations. In the sixteenth century, it received the curious name of “cavalier” because it is reminiscent of the oblique view of a man on horseback looking at a small object on the ground.

El vocablo alemán “Weltlandschaft,” no tiene una traducción literal, pero establece la noción de “El paisaje del Mundo” en el arte. Una vista panorámica aérea concebida mucho antes que el primer hombre se subiese a un globo aerostático. “Weltlandschaft” es la escenografía del mundo donde se desarrollan las comedias y los dramas de los hombres convertidos en pequeños actores dispersos en el paisaje universal, relatos silenciosos que nos informan de lo que se nos quiere informar, pero también de lo prohibido, muchas veces entre líneas.

Lo vemos en las pinturas de Patinir, Brueghel o el Bosco. Los historiadores se referen a un paisaje imaginario y bucólico, pero hay regiones en el norte de Europa que son muy similares.

La perspectiva aérea se aprendió observando la luz en la naturaleza mucho antes que los impresionistas franceses. Todo lo que está lejos pierde contraste, se agrisa y se va coloreando de turquesas o azules de ultramar según el color del cielo.

La perspectiva caballera es una de las formas básicas de proyectar en un plano un cuerpo de tres dimensiones. A partir de la imprenta se hizo popular por la proliferación de atlas y grabados que mostraban los puertos y ciudades del mundo con vistas panorámicas a vuelo de pájaro. La proyección geométrica no sólo fue un valioso sistema de representación realística para los pintores, tenía también fnes militares en la cartografía militar, comercial y en las ingenierías de construcción de edifcios y fortifcaciones. En el siglo XVI recibe este curioso nombre caballeresco porque recuerda la visión oblicua de los hombres montados a caballo al mirar un objeto pequeño en el suelo.

An unexpected shift

El giro imprevisto

The verb “to fall” almost always implies disgrace, an unexpected shift from light to darkness.

But while falling, the one who falls is a voyager detained in the tunnel of time, on the threshold between two worlds where angels and demons dwell. Just as semi-darkness crosses the Full Moon as it wanes; once it is fully obscured, we call it a New Moon, not a black moon. Just as Venus the evening star sinking below the horizon at sunset becomes the morning star when it ascends toward the heavens, announcing a new day.

If no light illuminates an object, then we see no image. Nor would we see images if, once illuminated, objects produced no shadows, no dark and light areas, no chiaroscuro.

The most ancient writing, on tablets of clay or wax, could not be read without shadow because the “ink” was no more than the shadow cast by the edge of a line etched into an illuminated medium.

A form that is not illuminated will live in the shadows and will remain unknown. A form illuminated without shadows will live in illuminated ignorance.

Many painters and sculptors have represented this terrestrial/celestial dichotomy, rebellion in the heavens. This Fallen Angel in particular, a work by Spanish sculptor Ricardo Bellver (1877), captures the confict between two forces that have come face to face, the gift of fight and the disgrace of the fall, in the moment of falling hic et nunc, a Latin saying that literally means “here and now.”

Cast in bronze, Fallen Angel today reposes in Madrid’s Retiro Park, a few meters from the Prado Museum and the Royal Observatory. The sculpture was presented to the world at the 1878 Paris World’s Fair, coinciding with the o≠icial presentation of the Statue of Liberty’s formidable head, destined for New York. May this unexpected virtual encounter between the work of two sculptors, who may never have met each other, serve as a tribute.

El verbo “caer” casi siempre conlleva una desgracia: Un giro imprevisto de la luz a la oscuridad.

Pero el que cae, mientras está cayendo, es un viajero detenido en el túnel del tiempo, en el umbral entre dos mundos, donde habitan ángeles y demonios. Como la penumbra que mengua la Luna Llena, que cuando está completamente oscurecida, en lugar de luna negra la llamamos Luna Nueva. Como Venus nombrada Lucifer cuando cae detrás del horizonte anunciando el ocaso, y Lucero del Alba cuando asciende hacia los cielos anunciando un nuevo día.

No podemos ver imágenes si no hay una luz que ilumine las cosas. Pero tampoco podríamos verlas si una vez iluminadas las cosas no produjesen sombras, si no existiesen zonas oscuras y claras, claroscuros. La escritura más antigua sobre tablillas de arcilla o cera no se podrían leer sin la sombra, porque la tinta no es más que la sombra que proyecta el borde del trazo inciso en un soporte iluminado que no dice nada.

Una forma que no esté iluminada vivirá en la sombra sin que nadie lo sepa. Una forma iluminada sin sombras, vivirá en una ignorancia iluminada.

Muchos pintores y escultores han representado esta dicotomía terrestre/celestial, la rebelión en los cielos. Este ángel caído en particular, obra del escultor español Ricardo Bellver [1877], plantea el conficto de dos fuerzas enfrentadas, el don de volar y la desdicha de caer en el momento de estar cayendo, hic et nunc, una locución latina que signifca literalmente “aquí y ahora.”

Convertido en bronce, el Ángel Caído hoy reposa en el Parque del Retiro de Madrid, a pocos metros del Museo del Prado y del Observatorio Real. La escultura fue presentada al mundo en la Exposición Universal de París de 1878, coincidiendo con la presentación ofcial de la enorme cabeza de la Estatua de la Libertad antes de ser montada en New York.

Sirva de homenaje este inesperado reencuentro virtual de las obras de dos escultores que quizás nunca se conocieron.

The accidental tourist

El turista accidental

Every time I visit a museum, I feel those eyes boring into the nape of my neck. My greatest faw is that I get too close to paintings. It’s as if being a student and lover of the fne arts, observing images and desiring only to contemplate and comprehend, has gone out of style. One is assumed guilty of wanting to destroy the paintings, because we are all just part of a herd, a statistic. And because “custom becomes law” when there is no legislator aside from the masses (which now take the form of an algorithm), nobody argues.

Excessive tourism is a cultural accident that has legitimized itself, that has become perpetual and global. It seems the original sin is having permitted objects to be classifed according to whether they contain written texts or are simply made up of shapes and colors. Do images, simply by virtue of being mute, really have nothing to say?

Luckily, many paintings that deserve long, silent contemplation cannot be found in tourist guides and are safe in museums, in galleries that no one visits.

Cada vez que visito un museo siento esos ojos alerta clavados en mi nuca. Mi mayor defecto es acercarme demasiado a las pinturas. Es como si ya no hubiese estudiosos y amantes de las bellas artes, observadores de imágenes sin otro afán que su contemplación y comprensión. Se es presunto culpable de querer destruir las pinturas porque formamos parte de una manada, de una estadística. Y como “la costumbre se hace ley” allí donde no hay otro legislador que el vulgo [hoy convertido en algoritmo], nadie discute que eso ocurra.

Es la masifcación del turismo, un accidente cultural que se ha legitimado, que se ha hecho perpetuo y global. Al parecer el pecado original es haber permitido que los objetos se clasifcaran según contengan textos escritos o simplemente sean formas y colores. ¿Es acaso que las imágenes, por el hecho de ser mudas, no tienen nada que decir?

Por suerte, muchas pinturas que se merecen una contemplación larga y silenciosa no fguran en las guías turísticas y están a salvo en los museos, en salas que nadie visita.

CIGÜEÑAS DE TRUJILLO

y las entidades celestiales

We are biological entities designed to walk on the crust of the earth, which emerged from the bottom of the sea; to travel the waterways that connect the interior valleys and coasts; to descend beneath the reefs and cross seas and oceans guided by the stars. It was granted to us to sink toward the depths of the Earth through labyrinths that lie beneath the roots of trees; to pull precious stones and crystals from the walls; to climb to the peaks of the highest mountains until we touch the clouds and see the world from a bird’s-eye view.

Prevented from fying, humans observe with surprise and admiration the birds exercising their authority in the realm of the heavens. We are obsessed by birds; we paint and sculpt them and adorn ourselves with their feathers, bestow wings and the gift of fight on horses, bulls and lions; we imagine angelic winged beings that look human, angels and archangels that never fall, celestial messengers that descend to us from above to whisper certain revelations to the chosen ones.

The verb “to reveal” refers to the action of removing a veil, or of illuminating the darkness with candles to make the invisible visible and the intangible tangible, to make comprehensible that which is in front of us, but which we cannot comprehend because we do not know how to see. However, we know that revelations can be dangerous. Galileo was suspended as a professor of mathematics and placed under house arrest because he revealed to us, in his Sidereus Nuncius (“starry messenger”), what he saw through his telescope: that the moons of Jupiter orbited Jupiter, disobeying the celestial orders handed down by Rome.

Somos entidades biológicas diseñadas para pisar sobre la corteza terrestre emergida del fondo del mar, viajar por los caminos de agua que conectan los valles interiores y las costas, descender más allá de los arrecifes y cruzar mares y océanos guiados por las estrellas. Se nos concedió bajar hacia las profundidades de la Tierra por laberintos donde no llegan las raíces de los árboles, arrancar de las paredes las piedras y cristales más preciosos y trepar hasta la cima de las montañas más altas, hasta tocar las nubes y ver el mundo a vuelo de pájaro.

Impedido de volar, el hombre observa con asombro y admiración a las aves que ejercen su autoridad en el reino de los cielos. Los pájaros le obsesionan, los dibuja, los pinta, los esculpe, se adorna con sus plumas, otorga alas y el don de volar a caballos, toros o leones, imagina entidades angelicales, seres alados con apariencia humana, ángeles, arcángeles, que nunca caen, mensajeros celestiales que descienden a la altura de los hombres para susurrar a los escogidos ciertas revelaciones.

El verbo revelar es la acción de quitar el velo, o iluminar con velas la oscuridad, para hacer visible lo invisible, tangible lo intangible, comprensible lo que estando allí delante no llegamos a comprender porque no lo sabemos ver. Sin embargo, sabemos que las revelaciones pueden ser peligrosas. Galileo fue inhabilitado como profesor de matemáticas y puesto bajo arresto domiciliario por habernos revelado en su Sidereus Nuncius [mensaje de las estrellas] lo que vio a través de su telescopio: que las lunas de Júpiter orbitaban a Júpiter desobedeciendo las órdenes celestiales dictadas desde Roma.

When a word is worth more than a thousand pictures

Cuando una palabra vale más que mil imágenes

Just as those who were born at the dawn of the ffteenth century were the frst to be able, thanks to paper and the publishing industry, to read illustrated books, so those of us who were born in the middle of the last century will be studied in the future as the generation that grew up and developed under the infuence of satellite television.

What was truly revolutionary, what had never before been seen in the history of telecommunications, was the joining of sounds and voices with images across great distances and in real time.

Our World was the frst live international satellite television production, transmitted on June 25, 1967. Performers and artists from 14 countries participated, including The Beatles, opera singer Maria Callas and painter Pablo Picasso.

Late nineteenth century cinematography valued the physical expressiveness of actors who acted like mimes. Dialogue consisted of texts inserted between the sequences with great delay, and music, if there was any, was provided by a pianist. It was not until projection of The Jazz Singer in New York in 1927 that large audiences were able to see, for the frst time, a commercial feature flm with synchronized sound. This is not a minor detail, considering that Orson Welles’ radio drama, broadcast in 1938, led all of its listeners to believe that the world really was being invaded by extraterrestrials. It was the dramatized script of War of the Worlds by H. G. Wells.

We are above all, and by nature, audiovisual beings. Audiovisual media produce in the spectator the lived sensory experience of being existentially and physically dislocated, in the antipodes, in the future or in the past. Hyperrealism is no longer just a school of painting; it has become a philosophical term, and we refer to the conviction that one is living in a real world, which is actually completely fake, as hyper-reality.

Somewhere in the world, under the “Big Cloud” that overshadows us at times, a map is being drawn, one computer key at a time, of our emotions, desires and sexual preferences, traveling indi≠erently via optic fber, satellite waves or our own bioelectromagnetic circuits with which the map interacts. Our circuits are being studied and ultimately capitalized upon, through the meticulous management of information applications in collusion with statistical science and neuroeconomics. We may try to resist, but we remain devout subjects of this “Big Brother” called A.I. who governs our two hemispheres: the celestial and the cerebral, one fctitious and the other real.

Si los nacidos en los albores del siglo XV pudieron leer libros ilustrados por primera vez gracias al papel y la industria editorial, los que nacimos a mediados del siglo pasado seremos estudiados en el futuro como aquella generación que creció y se desarrolló bajo el infujo de la televisión vía satélite.

Lo que realmente fue una revolución, lo nunca visto en la historia de las telecomunicaciones, es que los sonidos y la voz se pudiesen acoplar a la imagen a larga distancia y en tiempo real.

Our World fue la primera producción de televisión satelital internacional en vivo, fue transmitida el 25 de junio de 1967. Participaron artistas de 14 países, entre los que estuvieron The Beatles, la cantante de ópera María Callas y el pintor Pablo Picasso.

El cinematógrafo de fnales del siglo XIX se valió de la expresión corporal de los actores que actuaban como mimos. Los diálogos eran textos intercalados con mucho retardo entre las secuencias, y la música, si la había, era cosa del pianista. Hubo que esperar hasta la proyección de The Jazz Singer en 1927 en New York para que el gran público viese el primer largometraje comercial con sonido sincronizado. No es un detalle menor, puesto que el radioteatro de Orson Welles retrasmitido en 1938 hizo creer a todos sus oyentes que realmente el mundo estaba siendo invadido por extraterrestres. Era el guión teatralizado de la Guerra de los Mundos de H. G. Wells.

Somos ante todo y por naturaleza seres audiovisuales. Los medios audiovisuales producen en el espectador la vívida experiencia sensorial de ser y estar deslocalizado, en las antípodas, en el futuro o en el pasado. El Hiperrealismo ya no es una escuela pictórica, ahora es un término flosófco, se designa como hiperrealidad a la convicción de vivir en un mundo real que es en realidad completamente falso.

Tecla a tecla en algún lugar del mundo, bajo la “Gran Nube” que nos ensombrece por momentos, se va dibujando digitalmente el mapa de nuestras emociones, deseos y preferencias sexuales, viajando indistintamente a través de fbra óptica, ondas satelitales o nuestros propios bioelectromagnéticos circuitos con los que interactúa. Se estudian y se consiguen rentabilizar, mediante el meticuloso manejo de aplicaciones informáticas en connivencia con las ciencias estadísticas y neuroeconómicas. Aunque nos resistamos, somos devotos súbditos de ese “Gran Hermano” llamado I.A. que gobierna nuestros dos hemisferios: el celestial y el cerebral, uno fcticio y otro real

The colors of the water

Los colores del agua

Almost impossible shades of monochromatic blues are found inside the ancient ice of glaciers. Water has an intrinsic blue color that results from its molecular structure, a fortuitous union of oxygen and hydrogen (O-H) that absorbs the red portions of the solar spectrum, leaving the extreme blue end of the color spectrum in the structure of the crystallized water. This is what makes ice absorb heat, in the form of infrared rays; it is the ultraviolet rays refected by ice and snow that burn our skin.

Without a doubt, if the Sun becomes yellower, or redder, the planet will turn back into a ball of snow.

We see water in a number of ways, but transparency is not synonymous with purity, because the water we consume, which if we are lucky is potable, can contain a whole range of toxic and unwanted particles, just as transparent as pure, crystalline water. Conversely, the absence of color is a sign that no nutrients are dispersed throughout the water, as occurs in the most pristine areas of our planet when rivers take on the color of tea or co≠ee.

But most of the time, water is polluted. We know that there are now islands of plastic in the oceans, that they are starting to change the map of the world, and that there are rivers that are completely polluted.

More than 400 million human beings now live on the banks of the Ganges, which in the past was one of the world’s most sacred rivers. We have invented an absurd reality.

Instead of biodegrading as is natural, we have created things that remain active for millennia, like radioactivity and almost all industrial waste. On the other hand, things that should last, like wisdom or objects for everyday use, do not last. They break. This tells us that our societies can justly boast of having much technology, little art and no philosophy.

Malo accepto stultus sapit (having experienced trouble, a fool becomes wise). I hope that this observation will come true as soon as possible.

En forma de hielo milenario los glaciares revelan en su interior intensos matices de azules monocromáticos casi imposibles. El agua tiene un color azul intrínseco que es resultado de su estructura molecular, de un feliz enlace de oxígeno e hidrógeno [O-H] que absorbe la zona roja del espectro solar dejando en la estructura del agua cristalizada el extremo azul del espectro. Es lo que hace que los hielos absorban calor, los infrarrojos, y los ultravioletas refejados por el hielo y la nieve nos quemen la piel.

Sin duda, si el Sol se vuelve más amarillo, o más rojo, el planeta se volverá a convertir en una bola de nieve .

Vemos el agua en una variedad de maneras, pero transparencia no es sinónimo de pureza, porque el agua que consumimos, potable en el mejor de los casos, puede que contenga todo tipo de partículas tóxicas e indeseables, igualmente transparentes como el agua pura y cristalina. Por otra parte, la ausencia de color es indicio de que en ella no hay elementos nutritivos dispersos como ocurre en las zonas más prístinas de nuestro planeta, cuando los ríos adquieren el color del té o del café.

Pero en la mayoría de los casos el agua está contaminada. Ya se habla de islas de plástico en los océanos, que comienzan a cambiar el mapa del mundo, y ríos completamente contaminados.

En el Ganges, antaño uno de los ríos más sagrados del mundo, hoy viven en sus orillas más de 400 millones de seres humanos, siendo la ribera más poblada del planeta. Hemos inventado una de las realidades más absurdas: lo que debiera degradarse en la naturaleza, permanece activo durante milenios, como la radioactividad y casi todos los deshechos industriales. Por otra parte, lo que debe perdurar, la sabiduría como los objetos de uso cotidiano, no perduran y se rompen. Esto nos habla de que nuestras sociedades pueden presumir en justicia de mucha tecnología, poco arte y ninguna flosofía.

Malo accepto stultus sapit (experimentar problemas hace sabio a un tonto). Esperamos que esta refexión se cumpla cuanto antes.

From the dark side of the Moon

Desde la cara oculta de la Luna

On Christmas of the year 1968, three men for the frst time witnessed the Earth rising in the sky from behind the surface of the moon. The astronauts were so far away that they could eclipse our entire planet using just one fnger.

This year, in 2018, NASA celebrates its 60th birthday. NASA was founded in Houston in 1958, and ten years later, in 1968, John Lennon composed the song Across the Universe.

No One’s Gonna Change Our World was the name of the vinyl LP released in 1969, a compilation by various songwriters that promoted an activist conscience and respect for Nature.

Profts from sales of the LP were used to raise funds for the World Wildlife Fund, a conservation organization.

On February 5, 2008, on the occasion of NASA’s 50th anniversary and the 40th anniversary of the legendary song, Across the Universe was launched as an encoded signal toward Polaris, a star some 431 light-years from Earth. Unable to predict his own destiny, John Lennon was certainly never able to imagine that his song would be reborn, taking fight “across the universe” toward eternity from a set of beacon-like radiotelescopes in Madrid, Spain on Almenara mount.

The radiotelescopes I present in this painting form part of one of the most cuttingedge networks of observatories in existence today for exploring the frmament. Their name, ALMA, comes from Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Located in the Atacama Desert in northern Chile at an altitude of 5,000 meters, under our planet’s clearest skies, with fewer atmospheric disturbances than anywhere else, these radiotelescopes make it possible to see the Milky Way in all its splendor.

And since time immemorial, that sky and those stars have been observed from those same latitudes. ALMA is situated in the valley of Chajnantor, which in the Kunza language of the Likan Antai people means “lift-o≠ place.” The people of Atacama still preserve in their memories the desert routes used for herding alpacas and llamas. From those ancient cultures, we still have numerous testimonies in the form of cave paintings, petroglyphs and geoglyphs, burials and mummies more ancient than those of the frst pharaohs.

En la navidad del año 1968 tres hombres fueron por primera vez testigos presenciales de un amanecer de la Tierra sobre la superfcie lunar. Los astronautas estaban tan lejos que pudieron eclipsar con un solo dedo de la mano todo nuestro planeta.

Este año 2018 la NASA cumple 60 años. Fundada en 1958 en Huston, pasarían 10 años antes que John Lennon compusiera Across the Universe en 1968. No One’s Gonna Change Our World fue el nombre del vinilo LP publicado en 1969, un compilado de varios autores que promocionaba la conciencia activista y el respeto por la Naturaleza. Los benefcios de la venta del LP sirvieron para recaudar fondos para la organización conservacionista World Wild Life Fundation.

Fue el 5 de febrero de 2008 con motivo del 50 aniversario de la NASA y el 40 aniversario de la mítica canción, cuando se lanzó al espacio profundo la señal codifcada de Across the Universe rumbo a la estrella Polaris, a 431 años luz de la Tierra. Incapaz de predecir su destino, John Lennon nunca pudo imaginar que su canción renacería para emprender el vuelo “a través del universo” hacia la eternidad desde las “almanaras” de Madrid.

Los radiotelescopios que presento en esta pintura forman parte de una de las redes más vanguardista de observatorios que existen en la actualidad explorando el frmamento. Su nombre ALMA son las siglas en inglés de Atacama Large Millimeter/submillimeter Array. Situados en el Desierto de Atacama, al norte de Chile, a 5.000 metros de altura, bajo los cielos con menos perturbaciones atmosféricas y más limpios del planeta, permiten ver la Vía Láctea en todo su esplendor.

Desde tiempos milenarios en esas mismas latitudes ya fueron observados y escudriñados esos cielos y esas estrellas. ALMA, está situada en el valle de Chajnantor, que en lengua Kunza del pueblo Likan Antai signifca el “lugar de despegue”. Los atacameños aún conservan en su memoria las rutas de los ganaderos del desierto, del pastoreo de alpacas y llamas. De aquellas antiguas culturas nos quedan innumerables testimonios en forma de pinturas rupestres, petroglifos y geoglifos, enterramientos y momias más antiguas que la de los primeros faraones.
