NOTA EDITOR Salvete Readers, As many of you know, the Hane Train is finally pulling into the station with the arrival of this year’s first issue of the Forum Factorum! We are starting off the year strong! We have got a lot of great content coming at you in the next issue. We are going to try to keep as many chapters as we can involved in the writing process, so please contact the Editor if you are interested! And keep your eyes peeled for the next issue, which should include a “Meet the Officers” special article! Other than that, the next issue will include highlights from Nationals. I am looking forward to a great year, MassJCL! I will do my best to keep the stories refreshing, the photos exciting, and the memes bumping. Enjoy! Ex Animo,

Madame President

PRESIDENT Salvete MassJCL, I hope this letter finds you well! Almost three months later, I still find it hard to believe that another State Convention has come and gone. As we all prepare for the upcoming school year, it is my absolute pleasure as your 2017-2018 President to welcome all of our members to another year filled with extraordinary events to attend and new people to meet and befriend. My biggest wish for this year is that you all have a chance to encounter everything that has made my own JCL experience so wonderful for the past six years, whether it be the thrill of competing in certamen, or the sheer joy you feel screaming your lungs out as you represent your school or state in spirit. My second-biggest wish? Sweep Nationals! See you then! Ab imo pectore,

Anushree Iyengar

Perspective

State Convention The MassJCL convention was an amazing experience. This was my second year taking Latin, and by my first class in freshman year, I was instantly hooked. My Latin teacher, Ms. Engvall, made the class so fascinating. When I learned in my sophomore year that East Boston High School was going to have its own chapter of the JCL, I was ecstatic. Actually heading out to the convention was even more incredible. As I stepped into Sturbridge, all around me were so many people who welcomed our small Latin club with open arms--schools like BLA made this convention memorable. On the first night, we heard speeches from the candidates for the election. I found it intriguing how each chapter was a tiny democracy and had the power to vote. There was so much enthusiasm from the candidates, as shown by Jacob Hane and Tim Liu. Over the course of the coming days, we engaged in so many great activities. The gladiator fights were some of my favorite. So many other fun events were also held, such as the dance, arts and crafts, workshops, and a general opportunity to meet other JCLers! Because of the wonderful things to do, our school made a promotional video of our club! I really appreciate my two Latin club teachers, Ms. Envgall and Ms. Shanahan, for giving us the chance to attend. East Boston hopes to return next year!

Entertainment

Gladiator Games Paid for by the emperor in an attempt to keep the poor content, gladiator battles occurred up to twelve times a year in Ancient Rome! They served as a form of the most high-stakes entertainment there is: life or death combat. The thrill of the fight, the blood on the sand, and the cheers of the masses made the competition rich as individuals took personal stake in the lives of two sweaty men. We had to pose the question: why shouldn’t we bring back this tradition for angsty, hormonal teens? Photo by Jesse Hogan

We couldn’t think of a single reason as to why we shouldn’t revive the tradition! So resident expert, and Barnstable JCL sponsor, Ms. Miklosky contacted Mass JCL and advocated for the return of this faux-fighting version of the deadly games. Since then, Barnstable JCL has been in charge of supplying a wide array of ducttape and PVC swords, boards, and tridents (oh my!) for the games! While one goal of gladiatorial combat is to have fun, the ultimate goal is to

Showdown at States

have a safe way of experiencing something historically relevant and exciting. The Barnstable JCL looks forward to running gladiator fights at State Convention each year, and tends to practice for the heck of it at our weekly meetings. Our team manager ensures the safety and dexterity of each of our weapons, and our preparation for each year’s convention is full of emergency taping sessions. To see what it’s all about, or to get out some long-seated hostility in a safe way,

“We had to pose the question: why shouldn’t we bring back this tradition for angsty, hormonal teens?” check out our combat sessions during the 2018 MassJCL State Convention. Anyone can join in on the fun by cheering on their friends as they pummel an enemy, or by competing to take home the glory of “Top Gladiator” in the tournament. We also have highlights from the gladiator games at last year’s convention on our youtube page, Barnstable JCL. So take a chance at annihilating your greatest enemies in combat and come to next year’s gladiator games at State Convention. The Romans did it; you can too!

The

Sturbridge Meme-drop

What’s your favorite meme? Classic “top text/bottom text” memes? Ironic memes? Pupper memes? If you love memes, then there is probably a chance that during General Assembly at State Convention this year, you airdropped memes to other JCLers in the great “Sturbridge Meme-drop!” Whatever the case, these memes are all just the same thing: bits of internet culture captured in a funny way. The culture that the memes captivate depends on the context. For instance, there are Harvard memes, history memes, Lazy Town memes, and plenty other genres. This applies to the JCL too. A quick search on social media will elicit the bountiful supply of classical memes, all relating to our organization. Back in 2015, “JCL Memes” reached peak popularity on Facebook, and as of 2017, accounts like “quintusiucundusofficial” and “jclmemes” have surged their way into our Instagram feeds. Their popularity is not hard to explain: we angsty teens love to find comical bits of JCL

culture that reflect us. While these memes have found a way into our hearts, they have also found a way into our politics too. Plenty of JCL campaigns over the past few years have used memes to gather recognition, most notably those of Tim Liu, Jacob Hane, Daniel Sherman, Anushree Iyengar; they have all found ways to utilize memes. Why? Well, it’s no secret everyone loves a good meme. If a candidate can share a meme they love with a group of people who also share that same love, they connect better. Plus, memes are easy to distribute. A candidate can put up flyers with their slogan imbedded into a meme to gain notoriety. These campaigns may have had mixed results, but the legacy they set in their fun and fresh manners will stick with us forever. From “Rick Rollin’” delegates on the convention floor, to “Wot in TIMnation,” these memes are not going anywhere anytime soon.

“Well, it’s no secret everyone loves a good meme.”

...Even as they spoke, their frail hands deftly manipulated the thin string which they shared. The hero made special note of the gleaming scissors which Atropos used to sever each length of string. He eyed them contemptuously. Taking a few steps forward, the hero unsheathed his sword. “When I was born, it was prophesied that I would perish by my own hand. Since then, I have lived in constant fear for my life. So instead, I have come to change my fortune by my own hand.” “We must admit—,” said Clotho. “—no mortal has ever made it this far,” continued Lachesis. “But no human will ever evade their fate,” said Atropos. “Your destiny was determined the very moment you entered this world,” said Lachesis... The hero scoffed. “Destiny? I am not one to let a baseless prophecy rule my life. I have endured many trials and overcome many foes. And now I am here to challenge Fate itself...”
