3 reasons to be physically active after 65

Did you know that seniors can greatly benefit from regular physical activity? If you’re 65 or older, here are three good reasons to make exercise part of your daily life.

1. Prevent chronic illness

Exercise can help reduce the risk of heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes and even certain types of cancer. Moving your body can also help strengthen your immune system and improve your body’s ability to fight infections.

2. Improve balance and coordination

Falls and injuries are more likely to occur as you get older due to poor balance and coordination. Fortunately, physical activity can help improve these physical abilities. Balance exercises can be particularly beneficial for seniors as it helps strengthen the stabilizing muscles and improve coordination.

3. Promote mental and cognitive health

Exercise promotes the release of endorphins, also known as “happy hormones,” which help reduce stress, anxiety and depression. Several studies have shown that physical activity can also improve cognitive function and reduce the risk of dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

Incorporate exercise into your daily routine to improve your quality of life, maintain your independence and make the most of your golden years.

Autumn: the perfect season to get moving

Do you want to stay in shape this fall? This list of activities is sure to inspire you to get moving, no matter your interests.

Hiking

Lace up your hiking boots and explore the trails in your area. Whether you take to the hills or meander through the forest, you’re sure to find your fill of magnificently colored landscapes. Your energized, oxygenated body will thank you!

Biking

Whether you prefer a classic cruiser or an e-bike, the possibilities for scenic rides are endless. Set yourself a calorie or mileage goal, pack a snack with some water and off you go!

Kayaking

Explore a tranquil lake or river near you and observe the colorful reflections of the surrounding trees. Kayaking is an excellent way to strengthen your arms and shoulders while engaging with your natural surroundings.

Running

The sweltering heat and humidity of summer make running difficult and potentially harmful. In the fall, running workouts are more enjoyable, enabling you to extend your distance.

Horseback riding

Trot across fields, on a beach or through an idyllic country path. Savor the rustle of falling leaves crunching underfoot. Even though you’re in a saddle, you get an excellent full-body workout.

Visit your local sporting goods store to find everything you need to get moving this fall.

HAVE YOU HEARD OF NORDIC WALKING?

Nordic walking is a sport that’s quickly gaining in popularity. If you’re looking for a simple, effective and enjoyable activity to keep fit in retirement, Nordic walking might interest you.

Definition

Nordic walking is very similar to regular walking and hiking. The main difference is that it’s done with walking sticks, also called Nordic poles. This outdoor sport was created as a summer training program for crosscountry skiing athletes. Today, it’s accessible to everyone.

Benefits

Compared to regular walking, which only involves the lower limbs, Nordic walking is a totalbody workout. It engages an estimated 80 to 90 percent of the body’s muscles and burns as many calories as jogging. Nordic

walking also improves muscle tone, coordination, posture and balance.

This activity is gentle on the joints because your body weight is distributed over four points: two feet and two poles. This makes it an excellent activity for seniors.

How to do it

All you need to enjoy Nordic walking is two poles and a pair of comfortable shoes. It can be done anywhere, including in the street, at the park or on a walking path. Plus, it can be done in any season. If necessary, you can take an introductory session to master the techniques and optimize your muscle engagement. For instance, as in cross-country skiing, the poles should be set at an angle, so the tips point backward.

Visit a sports store near you to purchase high-quality Nordic poles and get expert advice.

Seniors’ dilemma: home care or assisted living?

Are you a homeowner who’s getting on in years? Do you have less energy than you used to? If your daily chores are becoming more and more difficult, there are several options to make your life easier, including using home care services or moving to a seniors’ residence.

Home care services

Staying in your home and paying for home care services like housekeeping and food delivery can save you the hassle of sorting through your possessions and the stress of moving. However, if your loved ones are busy and don’t have the time to visit, your social life will be much more limited than if you were living in a seniors’ residence.

Do you want to stay in your home at all costs? Contact various home care companies in your area to learn about your options.

Seniors’ residence

Owning a large home just for occasional family get-togethers can put unnecessary stress on you. Downsizing and moving into a seniors’ residence makes sense. Most facilities offer meal plans and health care services, sophisticated security systems and a wide range of activities and amenities, including dancing, choir, billiards and swimming pools. Visit a few facilities in your area to see what’s available to you.

Do you need a large amount of money to continue living in the comfort of your home? If you’re 55 or older, ask about a reverse mortgage.

3 tips for selling your home and moving into a seniors’ residence

Are you thinking about moving into a private seniors’ residence? If so, you’ll need to sell your current home. Here are three things to consider to help you make this significant transition as easy as possible.

1. First, find the perfect residence. Of course, the facility must meet your needs and budget. However, you must also like the atmosphere. Don’t hesitate to hire a housing consultant to help you find properties and set up tours. Once you’ve secured the perfect residence, your motivation to sell your current home will increase tenfold.

2. Secondly, the process of selling a property can be quite stressful, especially if it’s been decades since you last moved. Enlist the help of family and friends to sort through your possessions.

3. Finally, the most important thing is to work with a real estate agent you trust. They’ll guide you through every step and help take the weight off your shoulders.

Get ready to step into your new life with the support of those around you and a trusted real estate specialist.

Caring for YOU during grief …

What does SELF CARE look like during grief? Truthfully, like everything else in grief, it looks different for everyone. Your grief is your grief and how you care for yourself during this time is also unique to you. One thing that everyone who is grieving needs to do to care for themselves is this: Be kind to yourself. That may sound easy, but it isn’t always. Stop feeling guilty. You may feel guilt over things you did or didn’t do to care for your person who has died. Try to let that go. You can’t change the past but you can claim the past as just that and forgive yourself for anything that may cause guilt or regret. Don’t beat yourself up. Be kind to yourself. Get enough rest. You may feel like sleeping more during the early days of grief and that’s OK. Your body and mind and soul are tired and need rest. If you’re having trouble sleeping, be sure to get some help with that – whether it be to talk through things with a trusted friend or family member or see your doctor, it’s ok to need a little extra help during this time. Get quiet rest and be kind to yourself. Go out or stay in. Well-meaning friends and family will try to get you to “do” things – go out to eat, go to church, go for a walk – they want to help you heal. Know that it’s OK to say yes to them and it’s also OK to say no. Sometimes you may feel like being with other people and other times you may

need alone time. Give yourself permission to do both. Again, everyone is different in what they need. Stay home. Go out. Either is fine if it is life-giving for you. Be true to what you need and be kind to yourself.

Eat healthy and exercise. What we put into our body is what we will get from our body. If we put in good healthy fruits and vegetables and drink plenty water, we feel much better and are more positive. If we feed our body junk food and sugar, chances are good we will feel anxious and down. Exercise also helps mood – even if it’s just a few steps around the house or down the block. Do your best to eat healthy and get some exercise during this time and when you don’t, give yourself a break and be kind.

Let yourself mourn. Does it seem like everyone is looking to you for guidance on how to grieve during this time? Mourning is our external grief – crying, sighing, indecision, sadness – all those things are outward signs of grief. Others look to us not only to gauge our grief, but to learn what’s OK and what isn’t. Being

“strong” is often understood as only showing your grief when you’re alone and being stoic when you’re with someone. Grief needs an outlet. Grief needs tears. It’s OK to be sad in front of others – especially children –because it enables them to claim their own grief as valid. Your grief might just free someone else to mourn outwardly as well. Tears are not only good for the soul – they are good for the body as they release toxins, improve your mood, reduce inflammation and pain and relieve stress. Be kind to yourself and let the tears flow sometimes.

We are usually hardest on ourselves when we are experiencing difficult times. So again – central to self care during grief is to be kind to yourself. Give yourself a break. Let yourself rest and mourn and be with people and be alone. Give yourself the gift of healthy food and exercise. Allow your body, mind and spirit to mourn and be sad so that you will be able to reclaim the gift of laughter and joy again. Grief is hard work. Care for your whole self so you’re able to do the important work of grief.

Apples on apples

October is National Apple Month. To celebrate, here are seven interesting facts about this delicious fruit.

1. The crabapple is the only apple native to North America. The wild ancestor of the sweet apples you now know and love originated in the Tian Shen mountains in modern-day Kazakhstan.

2. In the United States, 2,500 varieties of apples are grown. Gala, Red Delicious, Granny Smith, McIntosh and Honey Crisp are some of the most popular varieties.

3. Apple trees take four to five years to produce their first fruit. Many apple trees live between 50 and 80 years. However, some varieties can live up to 100 years.

4. Apples are extremely nutritious. They’re fat-, sodiumand cholesterol-free. Apples are also an excellent source

of dietary fiber. As the saying goes, “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”!

5. Washington is the nation’s top apple-producing state. Other top-producing states include New York, Michigan, Pennsylvania, California and Virginia.

6. Apples float on water. This is because they’re made up of 25 percent air. If an item is denser than water, it sinks; if it’s less dense, it floats.

7. Apples are classified as pome fruits. Pome fruits consist of a central core containing multiple small seeds, which is enveloped by a tough membrane and surrounded by an edible layer of flesh. Pears, quinces, loquats and medlars are other examples of pome fruits.

This October, get your fill of this delicious fruit by supporting local orchards.

SPICED PUMPKIN MUFFINS Recipe\\

As nutritious as they are delicious, these muffins smell incredible as they’re baking. Serve them as a dessert or a quick snack.

Servings: 12

INGREDIENTS

• 1 3/4 cups all-purpose flour

• 1 cup white sugar

• 1/2 cup brown sugar

• 1 teaspoon baking powder

• 2 teaspoons ground cinnamon

• 1/2 teaspoon salt

• 1/4 teaspoon ground cloves

• 1/4 teaspoon ground nutmeg

• 2 eggs

• 1 can pumpkin purée (15 ounces)

• 1/2 cup melted butter

• 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

• 1/2 cup pecans, coarsely chopped

• 12 walnuts, whole

• A few fresh mint leaves

SIMPLE COUSCOUS ROYALE Recipe\\

This traditional dish is over a thousand years old and has many variations. Here’s a simplified — and delicious — version you can make in the oven rather than on the stovetop.

Servings: 4 to 6

INGREDIENTS

• 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

• 1 large onion, sliced

• 14 ounces stewing lamb cubes (collar)

• 14 ounces chicken thighs, deboned and cut into large pieces

• 2 large carrots, diced large

• 1 can chickpeas, rinsed and drained

• 2 garlic cloves, minced

• 2 tablespoons tomato paste

• 2 tablespoons couscous spices (see box)

• Salt to taste

• 4 cups chicken or vegetable broth

• 1 small zucchini, diced large

• 6 Merguez sausages

• 10.5 ounces medium-grain durum wheat semolina couscous

• 1 tablespoon butter

• Parsley, for garnish

DIRECTIONS

1. Heat the oil in a large oven-safe sauté pan or casserole dish like Le Creuset. Lightly brown the onions and add the lamb and chicken.

DIRECTIONS

1. Preheat the oven to 375 F. Line a muffin tin with paper cups.

2. Whisk together the flour, white sugar, brown sugar, baking powder and spices in a large bowl. Set aside.

3. In another bowl, combine the eggs, pumpkin purée, melted butter and vanilla extract. Pour the wet ingredients into the dry ingredients and mix gently until the batter is smooth.

4. Add the chopped pecans and gently stir to combine.

5. Place about 2 tablespoons of the batter into each cup. Top each with a whole walnut.

6. Bake for 30 minutes or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out clean. Place the cooled muffins on a serving platter and garnish with mint.

dash of salt.

4. Add just enough broth to cover the mixture. Add water as needed.

5. Cover and bake for 60 minutes. Add the zucchini and then return the dish to the oven for another 30 minutes.

6. Grill the sausages in a pan.

7. Just before serving, cook the couscous in 1.5 times its volume of boiling water (approximately 2 cups), or by following the cooking instructions on the package. Add butter and fluff with a fork.

8. Serve the meat and vegetables with the broth on a bed of couscous. Garnish with parsley.

CREATIVE SEASONING TIPS: Don’t have ras el hanout to spice up your couscous? Use the following blend, taking time to ensure they’re well ground: 1 teaspoon finely grated ginger, 1/2 teaspoon coriander seeds, 1/2 teaspoon cumin, 1/2 teaspoon nutmeg and 1/2 teaspoon cardamom.

If that mixture seems too complicated, simply buy an extra Merguez sausage, chop it into tiny slices and add it to the dish before baking. The broth will absorb the characteristic Merguez flavors.

The Good Lord Bird, a novel about small-town secrets and the people who keep them

In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Tom Lake: A Novel

Hardcover | $30.00

August 1, 2023 | 320 Pages

#1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • A REESE’S BOOK CLUB PICK

In this beautiful and moving novel about family, love, and growing up, Ann Patchett once again proves herself one of America’s finest writers.

Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store. When the state came looking for a deaf boy to institutionalize him, it was Chona and Nate Timblin, the Black janitor at Moshe’s theater and the unofficial leader of the Black community on Chicken Hill, who worked together to keep the boy safe. As these characters’ stories overlap and deepen, it becomes clear how much the people who live on the margins of white, Christian America struggle and what they must do to survive. When the truth is finally revealed about what happened on Chicken Hill and the part the town’s white establishment played in it, McBride shows us that even in dark times, it is love and community— heaven and earth—that sustain us.

Bringing his masterly storytelling skills and his deep faith in humanity to The Heaven & Earth Grocery Store, James McBride has written a novel as compassionate as Deacon King Kong and as inventive as The Good Lord Bird.

“Patchett leads us to a truth that feels like life rather than literature.” —The Guardian

In the spring of 2020, Lara’s three daughters return to the family’s orchard in Northern Michigan. While picking cherries, they beg their mother to tell them the story of Peter Duke, a famous actor with whom she shared both a stage and a romance years before at a theater company called Tom Lake. As Lara recalls the past, her daughters examine their own lives and relationship with their mother, and are forced to reconsider the world and everything they thought they knew.

Tom Lake is a meditation on youthful love, married love, and the lives parents have led before their children were born. Both hopeful and elegiac, it explores what it means to be happy even when the world is falling apart. As in all of her novels, Ann Patchett combines compelling narrative artistry with piercing insights into family dynamics. The result is a rich and luminous story, told with profound intelligence and emotional subtlety, that demonstrates once again why she is one of the most revered and acclaimed literary talents working today.

What’s Lewy body dementia?

Lewy body dementia is the second most common type of progressive dementia after Alzheimer’s disease. Has someone close to you recently been diagnosed with Lewy body dementia? If you’d like to know more about this condition, here’s some relevant information.

What is it?

Lewy body dementia is a neurocognitive disorder that affects the brain and eventually leads to a decline in thinking, reasoning and independent function. The symptoms of the disease are caused by deposits of an abnormal protein called alpha-synuclein (Lewy bodies) that form inside the brain. Men aged 50 and over are most affected by this disease.

The exact cause of Lewy body dementia is still unknown. Due to certain similarities, the disease is often associated with Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s.

What are the symptoms?

Lewy body dementia causes a variety of symptoms. Unlike Alzheimer’s disease, memory loss isn’t always immediately apparent. In the beginning, concentration problems and organizational challenges are often the first noticeable signs.

It’s also common for people with Lewy body dementia to lose their functional independence and experience recurrent visual hallucinations, anxiety and depression. They may also experience muscle stiffness and tremors like those associated with Parkinson’s disease.

If you notice these signs in an undiagnosed loved one, schedule an appointment with a doctor immediately.

Fall flavors galore

Are you planning a fallthemed meal? Stock up on ingredients to evoke the essence of the season. Here are a handful of must-haves.

• Pumpkins. These delicately flavored gourds can be prepared in a myriad of ways. Make a creamy soup, a comforting stew, healthy muffins or a decadent cake starring this all-purpose vegetable — let your mood be your guide!

• Apples. Buy juicy, ripe apples from your local orchard or market and cook them however you like. Apples roasted with vegetables, for example, make a great accompaniment to pork chops. As for desserts, you’re spoiled for choice. From pies to crisps to donuts, the list of yummy possibilities is endless.

• Oysters. Fall is oyster

season. Enjoy them raw with a squeeze of lemon juice, add them to a fresh pasta dish or use them as a lavish garnish. Oyster recipes abound, so you’re sure to find one to make your guests’ mouths water.

• Spices. Spices that say autumn — think pumpkin spice — make excellent enhancements to stews, meats, pies and lattes. Classic fall seasonings include cinnamon, nutmeg, ginger, allspice and cloves. These flavors will warm your tastebuds and your heart.

• Game. Meat harvested during hunting season makes a pleasing alternative to those you routinely enjoy. Broaden your culinary horizons by cooking meats like venison, moose or goose. Don’t be afraid to try something new!

Fashion trends for seniors: combining elegance and comfort

Do you want to refresh your wardrobe this fall? In 2023, fashion trends for older adults are all about striking the perfect balance between elegance and comfort. Clothing and accessories are being reinvented to meet your functionality needs while allowing you to express your unique style and personality. Here are a few trends to inspire your next shopping spree.

Loose, flowing cuts

When it comes to seniors’ fashion, comfort is the number one priority. This year, loosefitting clothes and flowing cuts are all the rage. Lightweight dresses and wide-leg pants in breathable fabrics are popular choices. What’s more, soft, stretchy fabrics allow for greater freedom of movement.

Bright, vibrant colors

Dull, muted shades are out! In 2023, older people are daring to wear vibrant colors. Shades such as electric blue, cherry red, lemon yellow and fuchsia add a touch of vitality and dynamism to any outfit.

Comfortable, stylish shoes

Shoes are an essential part of any outfit. This year, comfortable and stylish models are stepping up in seniors’ fashion. Lightweight sneakers with cushioned soles, for example, are very popular.

Older adults now have access to a wide range of clothing choices that allow them to remain fashionable while feeling comfortable. Style has no age limit — express your personality!

Eventide launches innovative education series for residents, community

Lifelong learning builds brain power, and science can prove it.

According to the National Institute on Aging, people 65 and older who engage in activities that require learning new skills and ideas are more likely to feel happier, healthier and may improve certain areas of cognition.

Part of Eventide Senior Living Communities mission is to focus on all aspects of health— physical, financial, social, spiritual and mental— as a way to help residents, their families, and community staff to live smarter, more fulfilling lives.

To further the mission, Eventide recently developed Eventide University, an innovative lecture series that brings local and regional subject matter experts to Eventide campuses in Fargo, Moorhead, West Fargo, and Jamestown.

“Don’t worry, university instructors do not require school transcripts, and there aren’t any tests at the end,” Vice President of Marketing and Communications and Eventide University event coordinator Carrie Carney said. “We just want residents, their families, friends, as well as anyone from the community to enjoy a free learning environment that’s entertaining and social.” Since launching in fall 2022, Eventide University has hosted hands-on courses like writing a memoir and building a good Bloody Mary drink. The courses have also brought in community leaders like city mayors for lively lectures about the state of the cities.

“Eventide University is all about offering our residents unique, relevant events and activities that ignite new ideas and perspectives,” Carney said. “It’s been a very popular program for us, and we hope to welcome more people from the community as we continue Eventide University in the future.”

Eventide University classes are free to residents and the public, but organizers ask attendees to register online or contact Carrie Carney at 218.291.2206 or carrie.carney@eventide. org. Registration may be limited depending on location.
