3 DIY Christmas ornaments and decorations

C

rafting your own Christmas ornaments and decorations adds a personal touch to your home decor and brings a sense of warmth and nostalgia to the festivities. Here are three easy DIY Christmas decorations you can make with your family. 1. Hand-painted wooden ornaments. Gather some wooden craft ornaments, acrylic paints and brushes and let your creativity run wild. Paint festive designs like snowflakes,

holly, reindeer or Santa Claus. Personalize them with your family members’ names for an extra special touch. 2. Festive Mason jar lanterns. Coat the exterior of simple Mason jars with a layer of glue, then sprinkle glitter all over to create a magical snowy effect. Place a small LED candle or string lights inside each jar to emit a warm, twinkling glow from your mantle, dining table or any cozy nook in your home. 3. Felted snowflake garland.

Cut snowflake shapes from white and light blue felt and stitch them together with a needle and thread. Add a touch of sparkle with silver beads or sequins. Hang the garland along banisters, walls or above doorways to add a festive vibe to your home. Ready to start crafting your own Christmas ornaments and decorations? Visit your local craft stores today to pick up all the supplies you need to bring these festive creations to life.

strangers you encounter during your day. 3. Help the elderly. Reach out to senior citizens in your community who may be spending Christmas alone. Offer to run errands, decorate their homes or simply spend quality time with them. 4. Secret Santa for a cause. Organize a Secret Santa gift exchange among friends or colleagues, but with a twist. ADVICE FOR SENIORS:

7 criteria for choosing the right winter coat

Getting around without a car:

what are your options?

A

re you no longer able to drive because of health problems? Has getting behind the wheel become too stressful? Rest assured; this doesn’t mean you have to stay at home. Here are some alternative forms of transportation you may want to consider to help you remain independent. • Active transportation. Depending on your situation, you may be able to walk or cycle to some of the shops or places you frequent most often. An electric-assist bike is an excellent option. • Public buses. If your area is well connected, taking the bus is both a practical and economical choice. If you’re not familiar with this mode of transportation, ask someone close to you to help you figure out routes and timetables or to accompany you for a few days while you get your bearings. • Taxis. Do you have a taxi service where

you live? Hiring a taxi is an excellent way to get where you want to go, practically whenever you want. Bear in mind that some companies allow you to buy pre-paid vouchers to simplify your life. • Volunteer drivers. Various local organizations have volunteer driver programs, which can take you to appointments or the shopping mall, for example. Reservations are usually required. • Private group transportation. Some organizations, such as seniors’ residences, leisure centers or clubs for older adults, offer free or low-cost group transit services. You can use them to attend local events, for example. Of course, you can also ask friends and family for help from time to time. If you don’t feel comfortable asking, try coordinating some of your trips to limit the inconvenience.

Are you looking for a new coat to keep you warm this winter? Assess your needs by paying attention to these seven points. 1. Length. Look for a long coat that covers your buttocks and thighs, especially if you do a lot of walking. However, ensure it doesn’t restrict your movement. 2. Insulation. Lightweight down holds in as much heat as possible and is a winning choice if you’re always cold. However, synthetic materials are preferable if you participate in winter sports, as they breathe better and retain their properties even when wet. 3. Closures. Keep an eye out for high-quality zippers. If you have grip problems, make sure the zippers and buttons are

easy to handle. 4. Hood. Look for a hood with drawstrings so that it stays in place. A fur trim is excellent in snowy conditions. 5. Collar. No matter the style, it must protect your neck. 6. Sleeves. Sleeves that

can be tightened at the wrist with an elastic band help shield you against cold winds. 7. Pockets. Make sure the pockets are sturdy and big enough to keep your hands warm or hold your keys and phone. Happy shopping!

Travel planning for snowbirds

H

ave you and your significant other had enough of winter with its ice storms, snowfall, high winds and treacherous driving conditions? Are you feeling envious of your friends and relatives who go south every year? If you think the snowbird life is for you, here are some things to consider before taking off. Finances Whether you’re already retired or considering early retirement, carefully calculate whether you have the means to make the move without

compromising your quality of life. Hiring a financial professional to help you draw up a budget and manage your tax responsibilities can save you a lot of trouble. Accommodations Where will you stay in your sunny paradise? An apartment, chalet, condo or campsite? Be sure to arrange a place that suits your preferences before packing your bags. Remember to book early because the best spots are in high demand. Health If you’re planning to

be away from home for several months, see your doctor, dentist and any other regular specialists for checkups and prescription renewals before you leave. Additionally, be sure to get any recommended vaccinations for your age group and health conditions. Transportation How will you get there? By car, plane or RV? Depending on your preferences, each of these options has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. Talk to a travel agent to evaluate

your options. If you decide to drive your own vehicle, make an appointment with your local mechanic or visit your RV dealership to get a complete tune-up. Insurance Even if you’re in good health and your vehicle is in excellent condition, remember that nobody is

immune to accidents, illness or mechanical failure. Call your insurer and arrange to get the coverage you’ll need. Medical costs can be astronomical, so don’t take any chances. Property While you’re away, you’ll need a plan to handle snow removal, yard and plant

maintenance, pet care, mail and bills. Arrange for relatives or a trusted local business to keep your belongings safe while you’re not at home. The snowbird life is well within reach if you do the right planning. Visit your local professionals to make your winter escape with peace of mind.

Strategies for maintaining your quality of life

How to entertain your relatives without wearing yourself out

Grandparents often host the family Christmas dinner. If you’re one of them, you know how much organization, time and energy this requires. Do you want to continue the tradition of hosting your loved ones this year, but without the extra effort? Follow these tips: • Get a head start. Preparing for Christmas Eve only a few days in advance can be stressful. Start your preparations several weeks ahead. With the right planning, you’ll be able to treat yourself to a few moments of relaxation and pleasure. Leave yourself time to see a show or admire the Christmas decorations around town. • Ask for help. Some of the tasks on your to-do list, such as cleaning the house, moving around furniture, decorating the

tree and buying bottles of wine, can be delegated. Ask friends and family for a hand or call in the professionals. • Be OK with imperfection. Set aside your desire for perfection. Believe it or not, your children, grandchildren and other family members will remember the beautiful moments spent in your company more than your immaculate, crease-free tablecloth. • Simplify your menu. Are you used to cooking for days to feed all your guests? Avoid exhaustion this year by buying prepared meals at the grocery store or from a caterer. You could also try organizing a potluck. If you want to, you can prepare one or two of your specialties. Have a merry and carefree Christmas!

Alzheimer’s disease has no cure, but there are ways to delay its progression and maintain a good quality of life. If you or a loved one has been diagnosed with this condition, here are some strategies you can try. • Stay physically active. Exercise helps improve mood, reduce stress and maintain cognitive function. Even simple activities like walking, swimming and dancing can help. • Maintain social connections. Isolation and loneliness are common challenges for people with Alzheimer’s. Spending time with friends and family, joining a support group or volunteering in your community can provide

essential social interactions. • Challenge your mind. Activities that stimulate your brain, such as reading, playing games or learning a new skill, can help keep your mind active and engaged. • Take care of your health. Eating a healthy diet, getting enough sleep and managing stress can help improve your overall well-being. • Be patient with yourself. As Alzheimer’s progresses, you may experience changes in your memory, thinking and behavior.

Practice self-compassion, and don’t be afraid to ask for help. • Find hobbies. Engaging in activities you enjoy can provide a sense of accomplishment. This can be anything from gardening to cooking to playing music. Although living with Alzheimer’s can be challenging, remember that you’re not alone. Many resources are available to help you maintain a good quality of life. With the sufficient support, you can live well and continue to enjoy your life.

T

hanksgiving is a time for indulging in a delicious feast with loved ones. However, the aftermath can leave you with an abundance of leftovers. Rather than letting those delectable dishes go to waste, try these creative ideas for repurposing your Thanksgiving leftovers. 1. Turkey and cranberry panini. Take those leftover slices of turkey and spread a generous amount of cranberry sauce on your favorite bread. Grill it to perfection for a delightful panini that combines savory and sweet flavors. 2. Layer the ingredients in a baking dish, top with mashed potatoes and bake until golden and bubbling. 4. Cranberry barbecue meatballs. meatballs using leftover turkey or ham and bake them until juicy and glazed. 5. Pumpkin pie smoothie. Give your leftover pumpkin pie a refreshing twist by blending it into a creamy smoothie. Combine a slice of pie with milk, yogurt and a dash of cinnamon. Blend until smooth for a rich pumpkin spice beverage. Try out these inventive ideas to enjoy the flavors of Thanksgiving long after the main event.

7 winter activities that are perfect for seniors It’s a proven fact: enjoying the fresh air and sunshine in winter is good for your spirits — and your health. Rent, borrow or buy lightweight snowshoes to explore otherwise inaccessible areas in nature. 3. Cross-country skiing. Cross-country skiing is a great way to strengthen your heart and exercise every muscle in your body. 4. Wildlife watching. Sunsets, frosty plants and your grandchildren playing in

the snow make great images. You have endless subject matter to choose from! 6. Snow sculpting. If the snow is sticky, unleash your childhood spirit by creating a fun little snowman or an all-white castle. 7. Dog sledding. Do you love animals and the great outdoors? A dogsled ride is sure to please. Which activity will you choose?

Be sure to dress warmly when you’re out and about to prevent frostbite. If the temperature is particularly frigid, stay indoors.

Preserving history: restoring and honoring veteran memorials Veteran memorials hold profound significance as timeless reminders of sacrifice, bravery and the price of freedom. However, the passage of time and exposure to the elements can take a toll on these monuments. The effort to restore and maintain these structures requires community engagement. As Veterans Day approaches, here are four ways you can help restore your town or city’s war memorial. 1. Volunteer. One of the most impactful things you can do is volunteer for a restoration project. Whether it’s cleaning, painting or landscaping, your time and effort can make a significant difference in restoring these cherished landmarks. 2. Fundraise. Organize a fundraising event or campaign to support the restoration of veteran memorials. Seek donations from local businesses, community members and organizations passionate about honoring veterans.

3. Spread awareness. Help raise awareness about the importance of preserving veteran memorials by sharing their stories and historical significance. Use social media platforms, write articles for local newspapers or organize educational talks to inform the community about the need for restoration efforts and the enduring value of these memorials. 4. The Covenant of Water

Lessons in Chemistry: A Novel

by Abraham Verghese PRODUCT DETAILS Hardcover | $32.00 May 2, 2023 | 736 Pages

by Bonnie Garmus PRODUCT DETAILS Hardcover | $29.00 April 5, 2022 | 400 Pages #1 NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • Meet Elizabeth Zott: “a gifted research chemist, absurdly self-assured and immune to social convention” (The Washington Post) in 1960s California whose career takes a detour when she becomes the unlikely star of a beloved TV cooking show. • STREAM ON APPLE TV+ This novel is “irresistible, satisfying and full of fuel” (The New York Times Book Review) and “witty, sometimes hilarious... the Catch-22 of early feminism” (Stephen King, via Twitter). A BEST BOOK OF THE YEAR: The New York Times, Washington Post, NPR, Oprah Daily, Entertainment Weekly, Newsweek Chemist Elizabeth Zott is not your average woman. In fact, Elizabeth Zott would be the first to point out that there is no such thing as an average woman. But it’s the early 1960s and her all-male team at Hastings Research Institute takes a very unscientific view

The Forum

of equality. Except for one: Calvin Evans; the lonely, brilliant, Nobel–prize nominated grudge-holder who falls in love with—of all things—her mind. True chemistry results. But like science, life is unpredictable. Which is why a few years later Elizabeth Zott finds herself not only a single mother, but the reluctant star of America’s most beloved cooking show Supper at Six. Elizabeth’s unusual approach to cooking (“combine one tablespoon acetic acid with a pinch of sodium chloride”) proves revolutionary. But as her following grows, not everyone is happy. Because as it turns out, Elizabeth Zott isn’t just teaching women to cook. She’s daring them to change the status quo. Laugh-out-loud funny, shrewdly observant, and studded with a dazzling cast of supporting characters, Lessons in Chemistry is as original and vibrant as its protagonist.

OPRAH’S BOOK CLUB PICK • INSTANT NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER • SUBJECT OF A SIX-PART SUPER SOUL PODCAST SERIES HOSTED BY OPRAH WINFREY From the New York Timesbestselling author of Cutting for Stone comes a stunning and magisterial epic of love, faith, and medicine, set in Kerala, South India, following three generations of a family seeking the answers to a strange secret “One of the best books I’ve read in my entire life. It’s epic. It’s transportive . . . It was unputdownable!”—Oprah Winfrey, OprahDaily.com The Covenant of Water is the long-awaited new novel by Abraham Verghese, the author of the major word-of-mouth bestseller Cutting for Stone, which has sold over 1.5 million copies in the United States alone and remained on the New York Times bestseller list for over two years. Spanning the years 1900 to 1977, The Covenant of Water is set in Kerala, on South India’s Malabar Coast, and follows three generations of a family that suffers a peculiar affliction: in every generation, at least one person

dies by drowning—and in Kerala, water is everywhere. At the turn of the century, a twelve-year-old girl from Kerala’s long-existing Christian community, grieving the death of her father, is sent by boat to her wedding, where she will meet her forty-yearold husband for the first time. From this unforgettable new beginning, the young girl—and future matriarch, known as Big Ammachi—will witness unthinkable changes over the span of her extraordinary life, full of joy and triumph as well as hardship and loss, her faith and love the only constants. A shimmering evocation of a bygone India and of the passage of time itself, The Covenant of Water is a hymn to progress in medicine and to human understanding, and a humbling testament to the difficulties undergone by past generations for the sake of those alive today. It is one of the most masterful literary novels published in recent years.

8 tips to combat insomnia as you age As you age, various factors can lead to sleep problems. You have a lot going on in your later years, including retirement moving, chronic pain or financial stress due to dwindling income sources. Your biological clock can also go out of sync. If you suffer from insomnia, here are eight tips to help you sleep better: 1. Maintain a routine. Always go to bed and get up at the same time, but don’t stay in bed if you’re not asleep after 20 minutes or so. It may cause your brain to associate lying in bed with being awake. 2. Reserve the bedroom for sleeping and intimate moments. It shouldn’t become a place for entertainment or work. 3. Practice relaxing activities, like reading, yoga, bathing and meditation, before going to bed. 4. Don’t have stimulating drinks like coffee, pop or alcoholic beverages in the evening and don’t drink too much before going to bed. 5. Create an environment that’s conducive to sleep by keeping the temperature cool and blocking out as many light sources as possible. If necessary, use a sleep mask. 6. Avoid naps after 3 p.m. and limit them to less than 60 minutes. 7. Exercise regularly to generate a healthy level of fatigue. 8. Eat light, easily digestible dinners. Avoid indulging in spicy foods in the evening. Are you still not getting a good night’s sleep? Don’t hesitate to consult a sleep specialist for personalized advice.
