Seniors: gadgets to simplify everyday life Did you know there are several gadgets on the market that can make life easier for older adults? Here are just a few that can help improve their health and safety. • Smartwatches are practical and versatile. You can use them to monitor your real-time heart rate and blood pressure. What’s more, they sometimes come with an emergency button for added peace of mind. • Virtual assistants can answer your questions, provide medication reminders, set alarms, help you manage connected home devices like your smart thermostat and so much more. • Simplified phones offer basic functionality and a more user-friendly interface than standard smartphones. They allow seniors to make calls and send text messages in the blink of an eye. These models often come with emergency buttons so the user can contact a loved one in a pinch. Smart gadgets offer many solutions to make everyday life easier for older adults. Do you want to improve your quality of life? Visit the stores in your area to select the devices that best meet your needs.

How to spot a social media scam From Facebook account hackers to fake stores and romance tricksters, your online presence makes you vulnerable to predators. Their tactics are always evolving, so tread carefully when communicating online. Keep an eye out for these signs of social media scams: • A message saying something like “Is that you in this video?” followed by a link. Even if the message seems to come from a friend, don’t click the link. • Social media quizzes requesting personal information. Birthdays, pet names, song titles or details about your youth could reveal information that hackers can use to guess your passwords or bypass other security safeguards. • A friend request from someone you’ve already connected with. Likewise, be wary of any request from a

social media account with minimal activity and few contacts. • Message exchanges in which the person asks to shift to another method of communication, such as telephone or text. • Requests to send or receive money. Be especially suspicious of offers of money in exchange for help, even if they seem to come from someone you know. • Unrealistically cheap deals. Don’t trust online retail websites that don’t provide a physical address and information on shipping costs and timelines. In many cases, avoiding online scammers is a matter of resisting the urge to click and, instead, using a little discernment. A local IT specialist can help optimize the security of your devices and online accounts.

4 hobbies you can do online Bored of scrolling through the same old social media posts? If you’re looking for a new source of online entertainment, try one — or all — of these hobbies.

1. Games The web is a treasure trove of games, from classic video games to online board games and word puzzles. Many online games let you connect socially with other players. Playing online lets you indulge your competitive nature and keep those brain cells humming.

2. Genealogy Researching your family’s history means more than building a family tree. Locating unique documents can help you unearth stories of your ancestors through marriages, medical conditions, military service, occupations and more. What a legacy for you to share with your children and grandchildren.

3. Learning

Learning a new subject or skill can improve your cognition, mood and sense of social connectedness. Whether you learn to speak a new language or play a musical instrument, you’ll find the resources you need on the web. Find how-to videos to learn a hands-on skill or explore free online university courses.

4. Content creation

From blogs to podcasts to videos, whatever your preferred method of communication, the internet has a platform to showcase your talents or share your knowledge. Whether you’re a natural performer or passionate about a specific subject, the web gives you options to put yourself out there from the comfort of your home. Your local electronics retailer can ensure you have the tools you need to get started on your new hobby.

Write a memoir for your family Are you a natural storyteller? If you love sharing stories of your youth, you may like to write a memoir you can pass on to your children and grandchildren. Here are some tips to get you started.

Start small

Don’t think of your project as a book. Rather, tell your stories one memory at a time. Not sure where to start? Try one of these prompts: • The place where you played as a child • An event that made you proud • A special holiday • A prized possession • A memorable person from your youth

Use sensory details

Sensory details make your audience feel what it was like to be in your shoes. Try to remember what you were wearing or how the

ground felt under your feet. How did the room smell? Was there a distinct sound? Were you hungry? Chilly? Shaking? Sweating?

Talk about your emotions, then and now

Reflect on your feelings at the time of the event, and then consider whether you feel the same way now. You may be surprised at how you’ve changed over time. Sharing these insights can enrich your story and help strengthen your connection with your loved ones.

Presentation

Once you’ve written your story, consider compiling a book or creating a video or audio recording of yourself recounting your stories. When you’re ready to share your stories, reach out to professionals in your community to help with editing, printing or recording.

Unsung heroes of Black history Black history is rich with the contributions of remarkable individuals who’ve left an indelible mark on society. Although some trailblazers receive well-deserved recognition, the achievements of many unsung heroes remain relatively unknown. Here are three individuals who deserve to be celebrated. 1. Dr. Charles Drew (1904 – 1950) was a brilliant physician and surgeon whose pioneering research revolutionized the field of blood banking. He developed techniques for storing and processing blood plasma, leading to the first largescale blood bank during the Second World War. Dr. Drew also protested the practice of racial Photo: U.S. National Archives id. 559199 segregation Dr. Charles Drew in blood donation, as it has no basis in science. 2. significant contributions to NASA’s early space missions. As the first Black female engineer at NASA, she overcame racial and gender discrimination to become a leader in the organization. Her work was instrumental in advancing aerospace engineering, and she contributed to the success of the United States space program. 3. Bayard Rustin (1912 – 1987) was a prominent civil rights activist who played a vital role in organizing the historic March on Washington in 1963. Despite his influential role in the civil rights movement, Rustin’s contributions were often overshadowed by the discrimination he received due to his sexual orientation. He worked tirelessly to promote non-violent protest

4 signs of elder abuse Abuse can happen to people at any age. Sadly, some predators see older adults as easy prey. Do you fear a friend or loved one may be the victim of elder abuse? Watch for these signs. • Physical signs. Physical abuse may leave injuries like bruises or broken bones, but not all harm is visible at first glance. Poor hygiene or significant weight loss may also indicate mistreatment. • Financial irregularities. Be wary if your loved one incurs sudden large expenses or loses the ability to access their accounts, especially if they’re unable or unwilling to give an explanation. It may indicate a scam, but it could also be a sign of abuse by a caretaker. • Strange behavior with a caregiver. Does

your loved one behave differently in the presence of a specific caregiver? Often, abusers can provoke emotions of anger or fear. Sometimes, however, the abuser may trigger overly friendly or flirtatious behavior in their victims. • Emotional, social or cognitive changes. Although depression, anxiety and confusion are all symptoms of various age-related conditions, they can also be warning signs of abuse. If you observe a significant change in your loved one’s emotional baseline or notice them withdrawing from their usual social activities, it’s a good idea to look a little deeper. If you’re concerned for the well-being of a senior friend or loved one, a counselor or therapist in your area may be able to help.

and social change, advocating for the rights of African Americans and other marginalized communities. As you celebrate Black History Month, take the time to recognize and honor these unsung heroes who have shaped the world through their dedication, brilliance and perseverance.

GMA BOOK CLUB PICK • AN NPR BOOK OF THE YEAR • From the New York Times bestselling author of I Was Anastasia and Code Name Hélène comes a gripping historical mystery inspired by the life and diary of Martha Ballard, a renowned 18th-century midwife who defied the legal system and wrote herself into American history. “Fans of Outlander’s Claire Fraser will enjoy Lawhon’s Martha, who is brave and outspoken when it comes to protecting the innocent. . . impressive.”—The Washington Post “Once again, Lawhon works storytelling magic with a real-life heroine.” —People Magazine Maine, 1789: When the Kennebec River freezes, entombing a man in the ice, Martha Ballard is summoned to examine the body and determine cause of death. As a midwife and healer, she is privy to much of what goes on behind closed doors in Hallowell. Her diary is a record of every birth and death, crime and debacle that unfolds in the close-knit community. Months earlier, Martha documented the details of an alleged rape committed by two of the town’s most respected gentlemen—one of whom has now been found dead in the ice. But when a local physician undermines her conclusion, declaring the death to be an accident,

Martha is forced to investigate the shocking murder on her own. Over the course of one winter, as the trial nears, and whispers and prejudices mount, Martha doggedly pursues the truth. Her diary soon lands at the center of the scandal, implicating those she loves, and compelling Martha to decide where her own loyalties lie. Clever, layered, and subversive, Ariel Lawhon’s newest offering introduces an unsung heroine who refused to accept anything less than justice at a time when women were considered best seen and not heard. The Frozen River is a thrilling, tense, and tender story about a remarkable woman who left an unparalleled legacy yet remains nearly forgotten to this day.

Following her New York Times bestselling debut Fifty Words for Rain, Asha Lemmie’s next sweeping and evocative novel introduces a determined young woman’s search for the larger-than-life literary figure she believes to be her father. When tragedy forces Delphine Auber, an aspiring writer on the cusp of adulthood, from her home in postwar Paris, she seizes the opportunity to embark on the journey she’s long dreamed of: finding the father she has never known. But her quest—spanning from Paris to New York’s Harlem, to Havana and Key West—is complicated by the fact that she believes him to be famed luminary Ernest Hemingway, a man just as elusive as he is iconic. She desperately yearns for his approval, as both a daughter and a writer,

convinced that he holds the key to who she’s truly meant to be. But what will happen if she is wrong, or if her real story falls outside of the legend of her parentage that she’s revered all her life? The Wildest Sun is a dazzling, unexpected, and transportive story about coming into adulthood—from escaping our pasts, to the stories we tell ourselves, to the ambition that drives us—as we seek to find out who we are.

4 exercises for seniors If you’re over 65, experts typically advise against strenuous physical activities like long-distance running, high-intensity interval training and joint-stressing forms of weight training. The good news is that you can build strength, boost your metabolism and improve your mood by doing exercises with minimal risk of injury. Here are four to add to your routine.

Walking

Walking may be the gold standard for safe, effective exercise. From wilderness hikes to a gentle stroll in a park, it’s an exercise nearly anyone can incorporate into their life. If you’re more ambitious, you may enjoy working up to a distance race like a half-marathon that welcomes walkers.

Water sports

Whether you prefer swimming or a water aerobics class, water-based exercise is ideal for people with joint pain. Water pressure provides resistance for

your muscles while preventing potentially harmful quick movements.

Bodyweight exercises Bodyweight workouts are an accessible way to exercise at home without investing in much gear. For most workouts, all you need is suitable clothing and a floor mat. You can broaden the scope of your workout by introducing a chair and an exercise step.

Chair yoga Believe it or not, you can improve your muscle strength and mobility even in a seated position. Using a chair to do yoga provides extra stability and minimizes stress on your joints. Chair yoga has also been shown to improve balance and flexibility. Before you begin a new fitness routine, talk to a doctor or a physiotherapist to determine safe exercises that best serve your wellness goals.

6 ways to help an elderly loved one Whether due to health problems, physical limitations or loneliness, seniors often need help to lead fulfilling lives. Are you wondering how you can help an older loved one, like a neighbor, grandfather or aunt? Here are six ways you can make their day-today life more enjoyable. 1. Offer your presence and emotional support. Older adults often face social isolation. Take the time to visit your elderly loved one regularly, talking to them and spending quality time together. Listen carefully to their concerns, memories and stories. Your presence can have a considerable positive impact on their well-being. 2. Help with household chores. With

age, household chores can become more difficult. Offer to help your elderly friend or relative with tasks, such as laundry, washing the floors and doing the dishes. You could also consider hiring a housekeeper to relieve your elderly loved one of their daily responsibilities. 3. Facilitate access to medical care. The elderly must often attend medical appointments and follow-ups. If necessary, help your older loved one by scheduling their appointments, accompanying them to consultations and taking notes to ensure they understand medical recommendations. Avoid infantilizing them by constantly checking that they’re taking their medication correctly.

4. Encourage physical and mental activity. Physical exercise plays a crucial role in maintaining health and mobility as you age. Encourage your elderly loved one to stay active by taking walks with them or suggesting they join an exercise or activity group suited to their physical abilities. You can also encourage them to stimulate their mind by suggesting interesting games or reading. 5. Encourage social interaction. Socialization is crucial to the emotional well-being of older people. Help your elderly friend or relative stay in touch with others by encouraging them to take part in community activities or join leisure groups. Suggest

that they invite friends or family over to spend quality time together. 6. Ensure safety at home. Safety is paramount for older adults. Regularly check on your loved one’s living environment to be sure it’s safe. For example, ensure their smoke detectors are in good working order and install grab rails to reduce the risk of falls. You can also consider using technology like personal alarms or surveillance systems to give them extra peace of mind. You must be patient, committed and attentive when caring for an elderly relative. Providing them with your loving presence, practical assistance and emotional support can greatly enhance their quality of life.

6 tips for seniors to travel safely One of the perks of getting older is having more time to devote to recreation and traveling. According to the U.S. Census Bureau, there are roughly 52 million people who are age 65 or older in the United States. With a $1.6 trillion total net worth, seniors spend more on groceries, pharmaceutical items and travel and leisure than any other demographic. Age does not have to restrict one’s ability to travel, and with age comes experience and more opportunities to enjoy travel. Before taking off for parts unknown, men and women over 50 can take steps to ensure their excursions are as safe as they are memorable. 1. Consider risk. The coronavirus pandemic of 2020 taught the world that situations can change rapidly. Before booking any travel, weigh the risks and the benefits of a trip. Determine if COVID-19 is spreading where you live or at your destination. Older adults have a higher risk for severe illness caused by the virus. Until you are vaccinated, it may be best to wait to travel. 2. Use senior-friendly services. Seek out travel services that offer the best perks for older adults. Many travel providers no

longer offer senior discounts, but they may offer other benefits, such as early boarding or assistance with traveling from gates to baggage areas. 3. Get travel insurance. According to Liz Dahl, cofounder of Boomer Travel Patrol, a website featuring expert advice geared toward the Baby Boomer demographic, travel insurance can be essential for older travelers. Older travelers may be more at risk of falling or getting sick and some may need extra medication if travel is interrupted or delayed. Travel insurance can provide extra coverage for a relatively low price if something goes wrong. 4. Don’t advertise your absence. It may be tempting to upload photos of your beachside vacation to social media as you are immersed in paradise. Unfortunately, seniors tend to be targets for thieves because they are seen as vulnerable. Don’t make the job easier by advertising you are away from home. In addition, have a neighbor periodically pick up your mail and set lights on timers to give the impression you are home even when you’re not. 5. Share your itinerary. Keep loved ones apprised of your general travel itinerary, especially if you are traveling solo,

center so you have a second set. Keep copies of your passport, driver’s license, insurance cards, travel tickets, and other documents as well. Seniors have the ability to travel much more than other age groups. Make the experience enjoyable by focusing on safety.

Plan a game night with your seniors’ group

Tax software can’t do it all! Tax season is fast approaching! If you’re thinking about using a computer program to file your taxes, you may want to reconsider. Here are four shortcomings of tax software. 1. It can’t understand complex situations Although tax software is capable of handling most common tax scenarios, it may not be programmed for more complex situations, such as multiple income sources, investments, business income or international tax matters. A professional tax preparer will ensure you don’t miss out on possible deductions or credits.

2. It can’t tell you if you missed something Tax software relies on accurate data entry, meaning incorrectly entered information could go unnoticed and result in inaccurate returns. Additionally, although software can suggest deductions and credits, it may not be able to identify all the specific tax breaks that a human tax professional could uncover. 3. It may not be up to date on the latest tax laws Tax laws and regulations change from year to year, and tax software might not always be up to date. These inaccuracies can result in financial discrepancies and potential

legal complications. A professional tax preparer ensures your taxes are filed correctly and you get the most out of your return. 4. It can’t provide personalized advice Although tax software can automate the filing process, it can’t provide customized advice based on your unique situation. A tax professional offers personalized guidance tailored to your financial situation. This can help you make informed decisions and optimize your tax strategy for the future. Don’t sweat this tax season. Entrust your taxes to a local professional!

If you’re looking for a fun way to liven up your next seniors’ mixer, why not take a twist on the classic board game by planning a smorgasbord of games? Set up multiple play areas and provide a variety of diversions. Here are some game ideas to inspire your plans. • Board games. From timeless classics like backgammon and chess to your childhood go-to game, board games spark connection. Include a mix of multi-player and one-on-one options. Mix things up with a few dice games like Yahtzee or Boggle. • Card games. For your poker-faced friends, card games get top points. Provide a few standard 52-card decks and let your guests play one or more games of their choice. Add a few specialty decks like UNO and Old Maid for more variety. • Team games. Team games can provide hours of fun. Cards Against Humanity and Pictionary are popular commercial choices. For multi-media fun, Cranium lets you mix things up with drawing, singing, sculpture and more. For low-cost fun, organize a few rounds of charades. Building in flexibility gives each person the freedom to choose the games they prefer, change things up or even sit back and watch. Add a jigsaw puzzle table for the less competitive members of your group. If you’re short on games, your local hobby shop can help.

5 facts about the life of Martin Luther King Jr

Americans have honored Martin Luther King Jr. on the third Monday in January every year since 1986. Although you may know him as a national civil rights icon, how much do you know about Dr. King’s life? Here are five facts about the life and legacy of this American hero. 1. This year, King would turn 95 years old on January 15. His childhood home in Atlanta, Georgia, is now part of Martin Luther King Jr. National Historic Park. 2. Dr. King led the Selma to Montgomery March, which took place in 1956 from March 21 to 25. Twenty-five thousand people participated, which covered about 50 miles. This historic march led to the passage of the 1965 Voting Rights Act. 3. Despite receiving a C grade in public speaking while he was at Crozer Theological Seminary, King went on to become class valedictorian in 1951. His famous I

Have a Dream speech, delivered at Washington’s Lincoln Memorial to a crowd of about 250,000 people, was partially improvised. 4. He was 15 years old when he started college after skipping two years of grade school. He received a B.A. in Sociology from Morehouse College at the age of 19 and a Ph.D. from Boston University at 25. 5. Dr. King was arrested 29 times, and many of the charges were dropped. His open letter dated April 16, 1963, from Birmingham City Jail contains the oft-quoted line, “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” In honor of the legacy of this selfless hero, Martin Luther King Jr. Day is observed by Americans as a day of service. This year, it takes place on January 15. How will you serve your community on Dr. King’s birthday? Photo: nationalparks.org

How exercise can help you live longer that hip fractures are associated with diminished quality of life and survival among the elderly. One in three adults aged 50 and over dies within 12 months of suffering a hip fracture, and older adults have a five- to eight-times greater risk of dying within three months following a hip fracture. Building muscle strength, balance and bone density through exercise can reduce falls and frailty, helping to prevent fracture-related health risks.

There are many reasons to get in shape. Weight loss is a prime motivator, as is reversing a negative health effect, such as high cholesterol or increased diabetes risk. Routine exercise also can improve life expectancy. WebMD says exercise keeps the body and brain healthy. That’s why exercise should be an important component of daily life no matter one’s age. Research published in the journal Immune Aging found that how people age is 75 percent lifestyle and only 25 percent genetics, which underscores the importance of the lifestyle choices people make.

Addresses sarcopenia

Cardiorespiratory fitness

Many health experts say that cardiorespiratory fitness may be just as valuable a metric to determine overall health as blood pressure and lipid levels. People with a high aerobic capacity can deliver oxygen to tissues and cells efficiently to fuel exercise, according to data published in 2014 in the journal Aging & Disease. In a study involving 11,335 women, researchers compared V02 max, also known as aerobic capacity, in women with mortality data. Women who were fit from a cardiovascular perspective had

a lower death rate from all causes, irrespective of the women’s weight.

Manage stress and mood Exercise has direct stress-busting benefits that can promote longevity. The Mayo Clinic says physical activity can increase the production of endorphins, which are the body’s feel-good neurotransmitters. In addition, exercise can imitate the effects of stress, helping the body adjust its flight or fight response

accordingly, and help them cope with mildly stressful situations. While engaged in exercise, people may forget about their problems as they are focused on the activity at hand.

Improve bone health Strength training and physical activity can stave off the effects of frailty and osteoporosis, which affects bone strength. A study published in the Journal of Internal Medicine in 2017 found

The health and wellness resource Healthline defines sarcopenia as the loss of muscle mass specifically related to aging. Doctors once considered this muscle loss inevitable, and it can affect stamina and lead to weakness. However, new indications suggest that exercise is the main treatment regimen for sarcopenia, particularly resistance training. This is designed to improve muscle strength and help balance hormone levels by turning protein into energy for older adults. These are just some of the ways exercise can help older adults live longer, healthier lives.
