make_shift is a collaborative leadership learning journey on system transformation for sustainability.
It is a learning space to equip leaders with the mindset, the unusual insights, and the ‘how’ to build future-ready businesses for a low and zero-carbon circular economy

Climate change poses the biggest threat to our livelihood, and simultaneously is the biggest business opportunity of our time. Climate change is the No. 1 game changer. Solving the climate crisis and building a low carbon society is the moonshot of our time. By making use of the right data, tools and science based targets, sustainable business transformation generates business value, is a catalyst for innovation and improves competitive advantage.
Moonshots require the right people, disciplines and technologies. We need bold and transformative leadership and the breakdown of silos. The challenge is nothing less than the systematic redesign of our economy from a high carbon make-take-waste economy to a smart, low carbon, circular economy. make_shift is a learning space for these moonshots. It is a collaborative leadership learning journey on the global sustainability transformation.
As Einstein said, you cannot solve problems with the same level of thinking that created them. We are convinced that we need a new systemic approach to problem-solving. The time for doing more of the same, but slightly better, is over. Thus, we invite leaders from businesses and organizations to join us to build future-proof businesses together. Are you ready to build the future?
Philippe Narval, Secretary General, European Forum Alpbach Anna Handschuh, Strategic Designer and Curator make_shift

„make_shift is a truly transformational experience, as it provides a lot of input, really great mentors and an inspired community of individuals who are willing to connect and support each other around a common purpose of sustainable business transformation to save the climate. It is much more than these 3 days spent in Alpbach and that is what truly makes it unique!“

„Taking part in make_shift is an opportunity not to be missed. Not only were content and experts outstanding, but the opportunity to actively engage with fellow participants and speakers throughout the programme was highly valuable to me. The concepts and ideas at make_shift indeed found their way quickly into our company and quickly developed into tools that helped us immensely on a company-, social- and environmentallevel.“

„make_shift brought sustainability efforts to the forefront of my mind, not only in my personal life but also for my non-profit organisation (Thriving Elements) and my work with PwC. At PwC, I‘ve made a conscious effort to bring up Green IT in strategy sessions for the technology we work. The programme surrounds you around the people, tools, and resources to make change happen. Ongoing support and quarterly meet-ups coninue to keep me accountable for my moonshot. This is what differentiates make_shift from other leadership programmes I‘ve been part of.“

We are looking for you if you want to be part of a new generation of leaders, who are truly willing and ready to transform business towards sustainability.
We invite business owners and business leaders from middle to senior management with the ambition and mandate to champion sustainable business transformation.
When we developed make_shift, it was crucial to us not to host yet another programme that ends abruptly. We want participants to embark on a collective journey that goes beyond the three days immersive experience in Alpbach.
As a participant, you will be asked to do a short analysis of your company prior to arriving in Alpbach. It is required to bring your impact concept (moonshot) used in your application.
Once in Alpbach, you will be working on selected moonshots, but also gain crucial knowledge on how to advance your own moonshot.

make_shift goes beyond Alpbach. It is a journey that continues to support you in your undertakings for the coming year.
In several follow-up meetings in 2020 and 2021, we will provide coaching for advancing your moonshot. New tools and knowledge as well as capacity building take center stage. Together with partners and participants we design each community meeting based on the needs of participants.
The quarterly meetings also serve as great opportunity to engage with make_shift graduates, experts and coaches and build lasting bridges around your interest in and drive for sustainable business transformation.
Your commitment to continue working on your moonshot beyond Alpbach is essential. Impact starts with you.
Are you ready?
Every year we select the cohort of participants based on diversity and impact. You can apply by sending us:
