Diversity and Resilience Diversität und Resilienz
Artists are seismographs of societal change. Their work has always been an integral part of the European Forum Alpbach.
The new format ‘Artists in Discourse’ provides the centrepiece for this year’s cultural agenda: Martin Kušej will host this day in 2018. Together with his guests he will discuss the importance of art in a modern, European society.
ART NON STOP are exhibitions and installations that are ongoing for the duration of the Forum and open to the public.
ART DAILY are the art openings of all Alpbach symposia and the cultural events during the day.
The artistic productions seek to confront and involve the audience to the issues at hand, entering into a sort of complicity with the audience to enable new perspectives. We invite you to transcend visible and invisible boundaries together with the artists.
KünstlerInnen sind Seismographen gesellschaftlicher Veränderung. Ihr Schaffen ist seit jeher fixer Bestandteil des Europäischen Forums Alpbach.
Herzstück der diesjährigen Kulturagenda bilden die neuen „Begegnungen“: Martin Kušej gestaltet als Gastgeber 2018 diesen Tag. Mit seinen Gästen diskutiert er über den Stellenwert der Kunst in einer modernen europäischen Gesellschaft.
ART NON STOP sind Ausstellungen und Installationen, die permanent während der gesamten Forumszeit zu sehen und frei zugänglich sind.
ART DAILY sind die künstlerischen Eröffnungen aller Alpbacher Gespräche und die Kulturveranstaltungen tagsüber.
Es werden künstlerische Produktionen realisiert, die sensibilisieren, konfrontieren und in einer Art Komplizenschaft mit dem Publikum neue Sichtweisen eröffnen. Wir laden Sie ein, gemeinsam mit KünstlerInnen sichtbare und unsichtbare Grenzen zu überschreiten.

The Last Days of Mankind / Die letzten Tage der Menschheit
World War I led to fundamental changes in Europe and the world. No author captured the mood in contemporary Austria more painstakingly than Karl Kraus in his play ‘The Last Days of Mankind’. Artist Deborah Sengl reacts to Kraus’ text with unmistakable flair and conjures up the protagonists of his play in a whole new guise: around 200 stuffed rats appear in 42 individual scenes. Using this device, Sengl achieves a connection between history, literature, art and the present.
Der Erste Weltkrieg veränderte Europa und die Welt grundlegend. Kein anderer Autor hat die Stimmung der damaligen Zeit so präzise eingefangen wie Karl Kraus in „Die letzten Tage der Menschheit“. Die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl reagiert mit unverwechselbarem Gespür auf Kraus’ Text und gibt den ProtagonistInnen seines Werks eine völlig neue Gestalt: Rund 200 präparierte weiße Ratten erscheinen in 42 Einzelszenen. Auf diese Weise gelingt Sengl die Verbindung von Geschichte, Literatur und Kunst mit der Gegenwart.

In it, you will find 25,000 black balls, each of them printed with an aphorism from the School of Stoicism. Our contemporary take on an antique thermal bath throws into relief the fast pace of the Forum. Here, you will find a place to linger and contemplate, a space for open discourse!
Mit Körper und Geist in die Gedankenwelt der Philosophie eintauchen: Dafür steht auf dem Dach des Congress Centrums ein geräumiges Becken bereit. Dieses ist mit über 25.000 schwarzen Bällen gefüllt, von denen jeder mit einer Stoikerweisheit bedruckt ist. Tage der Menschheit – Eröffnung
200 stuffed white rats in the Kunst-Foyer of the Congress Centre: this is the striking reaction of artist Deborah Sengl to Karl Kraus’s seminal play, 'The Last Days of Mankind'. Curator Günther Oberhollenzer will introduce the artist’s work in her presence. He will share with the audience a curiosity for contemporary art that confronts history and literature and addresses the most pressing issues of our day and age.
Mit 200 präparierten weißen Ratten im Kunst-Foyer des Congress Centrums Alpbach reagiert die Künstlerin Deborah Sengl auf Karl Kraus’ bahnbrechendes Stück “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit”. Der Kurator Günther Oberhollenzer führt in Anwesenheit der Künstlerin in ihr Werk ein. Er macht neugierig auf zeitgenössische Kunst, die sich der Geschichte und Literatur stellt und sich mit Leidenschaft den brennenden Themen unserer Zeit widmet.

During the Tyrol Days, Dapunt, who lives and works on a farm in South Tyrol, will offer a literary introduction to her everyday life: in Ladin, Italian, German and English. Her verses are as understated as they are spellbinding in their poetic power.
Die ladinische Dichterin Roberta Dapunt überschreitet mit ihrer Poesie sprachliche Barrieren. Dapunt, die auf einem Bauernhof in Südtirol lebt und arbeitet, stellt während der Tiroltage ihre Lebenswelt literarisch vor: auf Ladinisch, Italienisch, Deutsch und Englisch. Ganz selbstverständlich entwickeln ihre Verse einen kraftvollen poetischen Zauber.

How can I charge my body with energy? Which movements engender a kind of endogenous fuel? 'Join in and dance,' is the motto of Doris Uhlich’s workshop 'Energetic Icons'. All are invited to explore the powerful and tender poetry of their own bodies. You may learn to perceive your body as the epicentre of actions and changes. Sway and swing along!
Wie lade ich meinen Körper mit Energie auf? Welche Bewegungen werden zu einer Art körpereigenem Treibstoff? “Mitmachen und mittanzen” lautet die Devise des Workshops “Energetic Icons” von Doris Uhlich. Alle sind eingeladen, die kraftvolle und zarte Poesie des eigenen Körpers zu erforschen. Dadurch kann der Körper als Epizentrum von Aktion und Veränderung wahrgenommen werden. Schwingen Sie sich ein!

Vierundzwanzig-Stunden-Lesung: Die letzten Tage der Menschheit
Karl Kraus’s tragedy ‚The Last Days of Mankind‘ is a thorough examination of the dark side of humanity, as seen against the backdrop of World War I. 100 years after they were written, we will present 200 scenes contained within the piece in a unique 24-hour reading in the library of the hotel Böglerhof. Immerse yourself in Kraus’s kaleidoscopic world and become a part of this literary memorial and monument.
Mit seiner Weltkriegstragödie “Die letzten Tage der Menschheit” blickt Karl Kraus tief in menschliche Abgründe. 100 Jahre nach Entstehung des Werkes werden die mehr als 200 Szenen in einer 24-Stunden-Lesung in der Bibliothek des Hotels Böglerhof auf die Bühne gebracht. Tauchen Sie ein in das Kraus’sche Panoptikum und werden Sie selbst Teil des literarischen Mahnmals und Monuments.

From alto to double-bass – eight trombones will fill Alpbach’s church with vibrant sounds. The concert represents a colourful journey through the history of music. Students and teachers from the University of Music and Performing Arts Graz will perform classics as well as original compositions.

Visual artist Urok Shirhan will present her recent musical performance piece ‘Empty Orchestra’. Her work explores the politics of image and sound in relation to identity. She uses the karaoke format to raise questions of nationality, synchronicity and belonging.
Die bildende Künstlerin Urok Shirhan stellt ihre vor kurzem entstandene musikalische Performance “Empty Orchestra” vor. Ihre Performance beleuchtet, wie Bilder und Töne in Hinblick auf Identitäten politisch aufgeladen werden. Doris Uhlich’s 'Every Body Electric' marks the beginning of this year’s Health Symposium. Joined on stage by people with physical disabilities, the artist will conjure up individual and collective 'energetic icons'. This performance is a pared-down but radical invitation to explore potentials through the medium of dance. It will enable the audience to immerse itself in a kind of energetic archaeology. What possibilities emerge when machines such as wheelchairs are taken to be extensions of the body?
Doris Uhlich eröffnet mit “Every Body Electric” die Gesundheitsgespräche 2018 und lässt gemeinsam mit Menschen mit physischen Beeinträchtigungen individuelle und gemeinschaftliche “Energietanzformen” (“energetic icons”) entstehen. Die Performance ist eine schlichte, aber radikale Einladung, tänzerisch Potenziale zu erforschen. Sie ermöglicht es dem Publikum, in eine energetische Archäologie einzutauchen. Artistic Opening Financial Market Symposium Künstlerische Eröffnung Finanzmarktgespräche
Composer Denovaire turns biological processes into music. His piece, which was commissioned specially for this year’s Forum, translates the research findings of renowned evolutionary biologist Lynn Margulis into sounds and musical loops. The composer finds his inspiration in topics such as power and hierarchies.
Wenn aus biologischen Prozessen Musik wird, dann ist der Komponist Denovaire am Werk. Sein eigens für Alpbach komponiertes Musikstück übersetzt die Forschungsergebnisse der renommierten Evolutionsbiologin Lynn Margulis in Klänge und musikalische Loops. Inspirieren ließ er sich dabei von Themen wie Macht und Hierarchie.

Spoken word takes poetry out of the dusty cupboard and puts it in front of a live audience. The results are surprising, energetic and unexpected. In this series of workshops, you will write your own spoken word poem, perform your poem and create a short film of your poem on your smartphone. We will celebrate your life, your creative journey and your experiences of Alpbach. Spoken word poetry uses the natural language of conversation and is ideal for those who wish to find more creative ways of using spoken English combined with expressive non-verbal communication. Spoken word poetry is now a global phenomenon and poems are shared via YouTube and social media with millions of people all around the world. In this seminar, you will begin to understand the appeal and the range of this developing art form. You will learn how to write ‘from the heart’ and to speak your truth with confidence and conviction.

Students from the Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, who are currently training to be actors, will run workshops on ways to engage with theatrical experience; with games and exercises from finding a character to storytelling, they will share aspects of their training and in doing so discover why the theatrical event that we watch is called a play. No experience is necessary – just curiosity and a sense of fun.
Studierende der Royal Academy of Dramatic Art, die derzeit ihre Schauspielausbildung absolvieren, werden den TeilnehmerInnen in Workshops Bühnenerfahrung näherbringen. Mit Spielen und Übungen von der Charakterisierung bis hin zu Methoden des Geschichtenerzählens werden sie Aspekte ihrer Ausbildung teilen und so gemeinsam mit den TeilnehmerInnen herausfinden, warum das, was wir uns ansehen, “Schauspiel” genannt wird. Martin Kušej will host the 2018 day, ‘Artists in Discourse’. Together with Ayad Akhtar, Amira Casar, FLATZ , Martin Grubinger and Ana Roš, he will discuss the importance of art in a modern, European society: where does art hide in people, when does it unfold itself unconsciously and why is it impossible to avoid art.
A society for which ‘business as usual’ no longer works, needs to develop new ways of thinking and acting in order to master the various challenges it confronts. What and how can art contribute? Can it provide unexpected ‘instruction manuals’? And can it create space for increased interdisciplinary cooperation?
The European Forum Alpbach will invite a personality from the world of arts and culture to host ‘Artists in Discourse’. Following the ‘invite-to-invite’ principle, they will invite other personalities with whom they have always wanted to engage. Be it during a hike, an intimate fireside talk or a panel session on a larger scale: new fields of discourse will emerge as the audience both listens and participates. Topics and issues from all Alpbach symposia and events may be taken up and discussed.
In the morning and afternoon, Martin Kušej devotes himself in five encounters with his five guests. With 90 minutes per encounter, he encourages a direct exchange with one of his guests. A paid registration allows access to the five encounters and the number of participants is limited. The large evening round with Martin Kušej and all five guests is free of charge and accessible to all.
Registrations for ‘Artists in Discourse’ are possible starting now. The participation fee is 400 euros. The evening event is freely accessible to all. 10 artists can apply for a scholarship for this day (applications available in May).

Martin Kušej gestaltet als Gastgeber 2018 den Tag der „Begegnungen“. Mit Ayad Akhtar, Amira Casar, FLATZ, Martin Grubinger und Ana Roš diskutiert er über den Stellenwert der Kunst in einer modernen europäischen Gesellschaft. Wo versteckt sie sich in den Menschen, wann entfaltet sie sich unbewusst, und warum kann man sich ihr nicht entziehen?
Eine Gesellschaft, für die „business as usual“ nicht mehr funktioniert, muss zur Bewältigung der unterschiedlichen Herausforderungen ein neues Denken und Handeln entwickeln. Was kann Kunst dazu beitragen? Kann sie unvermutete „Gebrauchsanweisungen“ liefern? Werden dadurch neue Räume der Zusammenarbeit geschaffen?
Das Europäische Forum Alpbach lädt eine Persönlichkeit aus der Kunst und Kultur ein, GastgeberIn der „Begegnungen“ zu sein. Nach dem „invite to invite“-Prinzip lädt sie oder er wiederum andere Persönlichkeiten ein, mit denen sie oder er sich schon immer austauschen wollte. So entstehen vor und mit dem Publikum neue Diskursräume - sei es bei einer Wanderung, einem intimen Kamingespräch oder im Rahmen einer größeren Diskussionsrunde. Dabei können Themen aus allen Gesprächsreihen und Programmpunkten aufgegriffen und debattiert werden.
Am Vormittag und Nachmittag widmet sich Martin Kušej in fünf Begegnungen seinen fünf Gästen: Für jeweils 90 Minuten lädt er zu einem direkten Austausch mit einem Gast ein. Die kostenpflichtige Anmeldung zu den „Begegnungen“ berechtigt zu diesen fünf Terminen, bei denen die Teilnehmeranzahl begrenzt ist. Die große Abendrunde mit Martin Kušej und allen fünf Gästen ist kostenlos und frei zugänglich.

For all of the events mentioned below, we ask for your registration online at www.alpbach.org. For all events of the cultural programme, registration is not necessary. You can take part in any event of the cultural programme, irrespective of your registration for the official conference programme. Bei Anmeldung zu mehr als einer Veranstaltung: 25% Ermäßigung für jede weitere (ggf. günstigere) Veranstaltung. Die Tagungsgebühren verstehen sich exklusive Anreise, Verpflegung und Unterkunft. Stornogebühren: EUR 50,- bis 31.07.2018, bei Stornierung ab 01.08.2018 bis zum Beginn der gebuchten Veranstaltung: 50%, danach 100% der Tagungsgebühr.
Accommodation / Zimmerreservierung
Our partner organisations ‘Tourismusverband Alpbachtal und Tiroler Seenland’ and ‘Alpbach Tourismus GmbH’ have set up a reservation centre for registered participants of the European Forum Alpbach. The centre offers our participants unique access to room bookings in the region of the Alpbach valley (Alpbachtal). All accommodations can be reached usually by public transport, which is supplemented by our extended transportation offer (e.g. more frequent intervals). You will receive all further details on how to book your accommodation once your registration to the official conference programme is completed. Für die TeilnehmerInnen des Europäischen Forums Alpbach wurde von unseren Partnern, dem Tourismusverband Alpbachtal und Tiroler Seenland und der Alpbach Tourismus GmbH, eigens eine Reservierungszentrale eingerichtet. Diese nutzt das gesamte Zimmerangebot der Region Alpbachtal. Alle Unterkünfte sind im Regelfall mit den öffentlichen Verkehrsmitteln, die durch unser Mobilitätsangebot ergänzt und verdichtet werden, erreichbar.
