IT’S TIME TO PUT AN END TO SOUTHERN WATER’S FAILURE DANNY CHAMBERS MP This summer has been one of the hottest and driest on record. That has put extreme pressure on our farms and our natural environment. The problems we’re facing with our water supply now were entirely predictable. We’re being hit with a triple whammy of threats. Climate change is supercharging dry and wet spells, Conservative and Labour governments have failed to invest in new reservoirs and water conservation measures, and our private water companies have chosen to put all of their profits into CEO pay and shareholder payouts instead of investing in infrastructure. Southern Water has been responsible for 15 serious pollution incidents this past year alone, the second highest of all water companies. I’ve heard from so many people who have had trouble - I helped a farmer win the compensation they deserved after the company spilled sewage over their crops, risking their entire livelihood and park homes residents were being continuously overcharged for their water usage until I demanded Southern Water listen to their case and treat them fairly. These kinds of issues should never happen in the first place, and customers certainly shouldn’t be ignored unless an MP gets involved. For years, they’ve failed to invest in repairing leaks, and now during this dry summer are asking us to do their job for them and tell people to conserve water. At the same time as they’re increasing bills by hundreds and hundreds of pounds, an almost 50% increase over last year, they have decided to reward their boss with a £1.4million pay deal. Why is the board of Southern Water rewarding this failure?

After our calls for a ban on bonuses for water bosses, the Government promised to act. Clearly the companies are finding ways around the rules. That’s why I joined with Liz Jarvis MP for Eastleigh and other Lib Dem colleagues to write to the Secretary of State for the Environment and the Minister for Water, calling on them to scrutinise these practices and to put a stop to this unjustified profiteering. We have some of the most beautiful rivers in Hampshire, with the river Itchen running right through the heart of our community, alongside the nearby Meon and Test. These rivers are home to many endangered species like salmon and otters. After years of failure, Southern Water is now trying to lobby government to allow them to draw even more water from the Test. This simply cannot be allowed to happen. It will damage the river and local wildlife. If they’re successful, I fear that the Itchen would be next. It’s time to scrap Ofwat for a regulator with teeth that can actually hold these companies to account, and we should replace all of them with public benefit companies who work for us, not their overpaid CEOs. Investing for children – your options
Investing on behalf of your children or grandchildren could help them graduate debt free, get a foot onto the property ladder, or benefit from an additional income stream. There are several options to consider, including Junior ISAs, junior pensions, certain types of trust and, for older children, Lifetime ISAs. The right solution for you will depend on your family’s needs.
Lifetime ISA For older children, a Lifetime ISA can help provide for their first home or retirement. The account holder must be between 18 and 39 years old and can pay in up to £4,000 a year until age 50. The government will add a 25% bonus.
All the below options come with tax implications for the donor, so it’s important to seek financial advice.
The account holder can withdraw money from age 60 or to buy their first home. If withdrawals are made for any other reason, a 25% charge will apply.

The Junior ISA must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £9,000 per tax year.

Join the Winchester Half Marathon on 21 September 2025, and experience one of the most scenic races in the United Kingdom. Hosted by Challenging Events, this 13.1-mile route begins and ends outside the Guildhall, taking runners past iconic sites like St. Catherine’s Hill and Winchester Cathedral.
Jo Hamilton’s personal story behind the Post Office scandal, “Why Are You Here Mrs Hamilton?”, is now available to read or listen to in Audible. She still lives locally in South Warmborough where she ran the local Post Office. I have been fortunate to meet her and on a few occasions; she is a remarkable woman. I recently heard her being interviewed on Times Radio recently talking about her experiences and the release of the book. It is read by Monica Dolan, the actress who portrayed Jo in the ITV dramatisation “Mr Bates vs The Post Office”. I wholeheartedly recommend it.

How to train for a half marathon
A Half Marathon is a distance that’s achievable for most runners – if you can run a 10k, you can definitely prepare for a half marathon – but still remains a challenging one, requiring a good training program and steady commitment. Summer Exhibition
Ancient Woodland - A celebration of place A major exhibition of works by local artists Mary Waltham and Jacqueline Amies. (Continues until 20 September). Inspired by and rooted in the ancient woodlands of our locality, the exhibition invites visitors to the Allen Gallery to be curious about these rare and special areas to which we are fortunate enough to have access. According to the Woodland Trust “Ancient woods are our richest and most complex terrestrial habitat in the UK and they are home to more threatened species than any other. Centuries of undisturbed soils and accumulated decaying wood have created the perfect place for communities of fungi and invertebrates and specialist species of insects, birds and mammals.” (Woodland Trust 2024) Workshops & Events A programme of activities, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, accompanies the exhibition, exploring some of the themes presented. There will be opportunities to learn more about some of the stories behind the Allen Gallery’s permanent collections and some surprising connections with rural woodland sites and raw materials. Allen Gallery - Celebratory Collage
Michele is an illustrator with a background in education and community projects , specialising in creating collages using recycled materials to create a narrative. She depicts everyday images with quirky twists, which hopefully stimulate viewers to question or imagine....or simply smile. Over the course of the workshops you will explore how collaging can be used to process and record memorable moments in time to support wellbeing, from simple gestures to more significant events. The aim is to share how this illustrative technique can take away the ‘intimidation’ of a blank page but present a creative challenge through its use of limited materials within a structured and supported framework. You will also learn about artists who work in this medium, as well as the benefits of being a ‘maker’. Open to all levels of artistic ability, each unit will focus on a different method to record a personal narrative , in a supportive and non-threatening way, using easily resourced materials. On Tuesday 30 September August at 7pm, is entitled The French Prisoners of Alresford and the Hampshire Parole Towns. It will be given by former mayor Russell GordonSmith, who will delve into the history of the Alresford tombs of five French officer prisoners of war - four officers and one military wife - who lived for a period of time in the small district town. It will also provide some background on the Napoleonic wars and the workings of the ‘parole’ system, including life in the prison hulks and in prison camps. The classical music concert, which has been organised with the Winchester Ukrainian Cultural Association (WUCA), will take place in The United Church, Jewry Street, on Friday 29 August at 12pm.

• 200G STALE CIABATTA LOAF (HOXTON BAKERY ) • 600G RIPE MIXED TOMATOES, ROUGHLY CHOPPED (ISLE OF WIGHT TOMATOES) • 1 SMALL ONION, PEELED AND VERY FINELY DICED • 1 RED PEPPER, SLICED IN BATONS • 2 TBS RED WINE VINEGAR • 6 TBS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL • A BUNCH OF FRESH BASIL • SHAVINGS OF OLD WINCHESTER - LYBURN CHEESE OR REPLACE WITH GOUDA • SEA SALT TO TASTE • FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPER TO TASTE • 1 HANDFUL SMALL CAPERS , DRAINED
Tear the ciabatta into rough 3cm pieces and place on a tray. Leave aside in a warm place for around 30 minutes – this helps to dry it out.
A delicious and refreshingly simple light summer meal.
Place the tomatoes in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Rinse the capers, squeezing out any excess liquid and add to the bowl, along with the onion, pepper, ciabatta. Toss the mixture together with your hands, then stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and about 3 times as much extra virgin olive oil. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper, vinegar or oil, if needed. Tear in the basil leaves, stir together and serve. Plate up & enjoy!

Fostering Wellbeing in Young People
St Swithun’s Wellbeing and Grit Festival featuring Will Young
A
day dedicated to mental health, mindfulness and wellbeing; St Swithun’s School was transformed into a Wellbeing and Grit festival – featuring workshops, activities and a special appearance by Will Young. National pop artist and author of Be Yourself and Happier: The A-Z of Wellbeing, Will Young, gave an inspiring talk and took part in a Q&A hosted by sixth-form students. “I wanted to tell the girls that we are all so brilliantly unique and that there is nobody else like you in the world. The students listened so well, and the panel asked some excellent questions. “The special thing in a school like St Swithun’s is that you can come together as a collective on a day like this, like a family, and you can celebrate each other’s individuality. It has been a wonderful event and I’m so thankful to have been invited to speak.” The festival opened with a performance, Q&A and autograph session from The Entitled Sons. A charismatic band of brothers, The Entitled Sons shared their advice and stories on bullying and mental health, telling students, “When you find that thing you really love, try really hard at that because you could be doing it forever. You could even be doing it as a career.” Girls then visited different zones around the school grounds, each promoting a different aspect of wellbeing.
The relaxation zone offered a tranquil escape with calming experiences such as breathwork, charcoal yoga, perfume making and hypnotherapy. Dr Helen O’Connor, St Swithun’s clinical psychologist and festival organiser, explained, “The main aim for the day was to find opportunities for the students to focus on their wellbeing and to put themselves in situations that they may not normally have tried.”

Exemplifying this spirit of curiosity and challenge, girls immersed themselves in pottery throwing, African drumming and circus tricks in the enquiring and grit zone. Army veteran Rob Shenton later joined the zone to share his journey from a serious skull fracture and PTSD to representing Team UK in the Invictus Games, inspiring students with a powerful lesson in resilience and perseverance. “I think today has shown St Swithun’s at its very best, both in our focus on wellbeing and in the grit of the girls who have thrown themselves fully into activities they have never tried before, going from one to the next with huge smiles”, said Lucy Tipp, head of psychology at St Swithun’s. Prep students had the opportunity to explore wellbeing tools with sessions in breathwork, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and vision boarding before bouncing across the field in zorbs and enjoying an inflatable obstacle course. The petting zoo, complete with alpaca walking, was a highlight for all students. A myriad of activities continued to take place across the prep school
in the afternoon including dancing, nutrition workshops and yoga. The last zone was positive purpose and giving back. Students prepared flower arrangements, which they then delivered to a local care home, and baked cookies for The Winchester Beacon night shelter. Vicki from St Catherine’s View care home thanked all involved and said, “It was great to see that these were extremely well received by the residents – and the families in the homes visiting today. They have really brightened up the home.” St Swithun’s headmistress, Jane Gandee, reflecting on the festival said, “We feel that wellbeing is the foundation for success both in and beyond the classroom. Girls who feel supported and confident in themselves can achieve anything they set their minds to.” Prep pupils aged 3-11 benefited from the exposure to wellbeing tools and activities, and Prep Head Liz Norris added, “Unique experiences like this show our girls that looking after your wellbeing can be fun and rewarding. tood on Hurst shingle bank, looking out towards The Needles as the dogs paddled in and out of the surf, they tackled up. “Today is the day. I feel it in my fish bones. Oh yes!” Himself was full of hope and added “You might get some mackerel – I’ve brought feathers.”
A few years ago, the word ‘feathers’ in this context would have confused her. She’d have wondered if he planned to tickle the fish into submission, or dress them up as a showgirl, name of Lola. Now she knew better. A world of alluring lures and scintillating spinners had since opened up and she was planning to use these to catch herself a bass. In spite of the in-shore water over-fishing, Himself’s optimism was catching. Watching him busy baiting up some beach casters with ragworm, she shuddered. Happy to dig them up and gingerly scoop them into a bucket, she couldn’t quite bring herself to push them, wriggling, onto a hook. Especially after she found out that the scary looking things could bite. As he cast out his baited, weighted hook he cried out. “I’m going for flatfish. Frying tonight!” He looked so happy, standing there in his beloved tatty old shorts kept especially for the seaside, watching the end of the rod for the telltale ‘dip dip’ that might indicate a nibble. She set up the beach shelter for the dogs and unpacked the picnic under their watchful eyes. “High time you got new shorts” she said as she took over his ham and cheese baguette. “Mmn yes, soon” he seemed to agree. “Really?” she asked, surprised, given his devotion to the slightly sad cut-offs. “Yes. High tide, about an hour. You’d best get casting” oblivious that his selective hearing had clearly kicked in, he munched on his sandwich.

“I think that was a bite!” he cried out excitedly and dropped his lunch to reel in his line. His back was turned to the dogs, his baguette enticingly unprotected. In a canine parody of the game ‘Grandma’s footsteps’ the dogs crept out of the tent. Their necks stretched forth; elongated like moray eels issuing from their lair. Himself, disappointed that there was no plaice the size of a dinner plate on his line, re-cast and reached for his baguette. The dogs froze and then retreated, drooling, backwards into the tent. Catching her watching them, they shot her a look she could only describe as shifty.
Casting out her own line with its bewitching lure; articulated and vibrant, it mimicked a swooping, swimming fish as she reeled it back. She had high hopes and shortly it was her turn for an enthusiastic “I think I’ve got something!” as she felt encouraging resistance, only to be disappointed by the hook’s heavy cargo of weed. Fishing was a wonderfully distracting waste of an afternoon; a respite from concerns of work and family. More an exercise in anticipation of the catch, they were not overly disappointed with no fishy on a little dishy for their dinner. Not catching any fish, they were also not ‘catching’ anything else out in the open air and far from people. As the soft September sun slid towards the horizon, they packed up their collection of lures, feathers, hooks and spinners – and liberated the remaining ragworms. The couple walked back along the shingle to their car, whilst the dogs ran splashily along the water line, enthusiastically chasing seagulls and each other. “Fish and chips in Milford-on-Sea?” he asked as she switched on the ignition. “I didn’t think you’d be hungry so soon after that enormous baguette?” she’d anticipated cooking a light supper later. “Half a baguette darling” he remonstrated. Half a baguette?? She looked around at the spaniels lying down in the back of the car. One wagged its tail. “and to be honest, the end was a bit soggy.” Soggy?? She turned around again; the other spaniel raised a weary head and looked at her. Was that a crumb in its whiskers? Himself was conducting a post mortem on the lack of success. “Do you know, maybe it was the wrong bait – I’ll use something else next time. Perhaps squid, or maybe prawns. I don’t think that I had so much as a nibble all day” he mused, looking out of the window. She glanced once more at the dogs, who apparently unashamed of their feat of grand theft sandwich, didn’t even have the decency to look guilty. Should she tell Himself that he’d had more than a nibble on his bait and caught one, if not two ‘dog’ fish? Maybe later, when he’d forgotten about the soggy end...

CELEBRATING A DECADE OF WINCHESTER HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
This September marks a remarkable milestone for Winchester Heritage Open Days as the festival returns for its tenth year. Since its founding in 2016, this much-loved local tradition has grown into a ten-day celebration of our city’s rich history, cultural heritage, and extraordinary architecture - all delivered free to the public by a dedicated team of volunteers and supporters.

Over the years it has offered a dazzling variety of events, from behind-the-scenes tours of historic buildings to music, theatre, workshops, and living history. THE WITTERING WHITEHALLS TAKE TO WINCHESTER STAGE FOR ONE-OFF CHARITY WARM UP SHOW
to miss this live version of their popular podcast. Ahead of their national tour, Hilary and Michael will be taking to the stage at the University of Winchester to try out their hilarious podcast in front of a live audience, and booking is now open for you to be part of the crowd before the rest of the country gets to see them. The pair will host their warmup show at the university’s auditorium on Romsey Road on Saturday 4 October and, during the live performance, will record episodes of their podcast for future airing. Mimicking their weekly podcast, those attending will have the opportunity to pose a question or ask for help with a dilemma which the duo will debate and offer wisdom and advice from their experience.

FRIENDS JOIN FORCES TO TACKLE CHARITY CHALLENGE Two friends have joined forces to take on the challenge of a lifetime and help raise funds to support a local charity. Sonia Watson and Fiona Hollands, both from Twyford, heard about Winchester Hospice’s Camino trek independently through local fitness classes and, by chance, discovered it was a challenge that appealed to them both.Trail walking is something that interests the pair, having walked parts of the South West Coast Path and taking on the Camino has interested them for some time. When they saw the opportunity, they jumped at the chance to join the team. “I find walking incredibly therapeutic and relaxing, once you get into the rhythm of it,” says Sonia. “Walking all day is always a good day and conquering the iconic Camino will be very rewarding. “Whilst I love walking, training for the steep terrain and long days will be good encouragement for me to get out and do more. I’m heading into retirement and, with the children fully grown and not needing me as much, keeping fit in later life is

As preparations for the show ramp up, Hilary Whitehall said; “Michael and I are incredibly excited to be bringing The Wittering Whitehalls Barely Alive show to our DLs in Winchester. We have friends and family in the area who have shared the remarkable work of the hospice with us, a good thing to focus on. And doing it to support such a good cause is great motivation.” The challenge may be a year away, but the pair has already begun training, by following their existing walking patterns and trying to increase the number of days they head out. As their training progresses, they plan to increase their distances and cover different terrain in preparation, exploring the New Forest, Purbeck Hills and the South Downs. Their friendship was formed when they met whilst volunteering for the NHS during lockdown in 2020 and, while neither Sonia or Fiona has personal experience of the care provided by the hospice, both know a number of families who have benefitted. “The hospice is well known and universally admired and appreciated in the Winchester area, and this is key for our fundraising. There is no other local charity we would be happier to support right now, and we’re excited to commit to this adventure for them,” said Fiona. The pair are each self-funding the trip and hoping to raise as much money as possible to support the hospice. They’ve already hosted a sold-out yoga session in the hospice garden and have a Pilates session planned for September. A range of other fundraising events are also in the pipeline.

I want to thank them both for all the energy and enthusiasm they’re putting into their fundraising for us.” The Camino trek takes place in September 2026 and will see a group of hospice supporters cover over 100km in five days. This well walked pilgrimage will take supporters through some stunning areas of Spanish countryside before arriving at the famous Santiago de Compostela cathedral. They’ll then gather together to enjoy a farewell meal with the team before returning to the UK. News from the South Downs National Park
One of the grandest historic buildings in the National Park has just re-opened after repairs and renovations.
The National Trust’s Uppark House and Garden, near South Harting, has reopened after being closed for the last year and a half.
The 17th century house and landscaped garden are open four days a week from Sunday to Wednesday until 1 October. Visitors can now enjoy the tranquil garden, café and second-hand bookshop free of charge.
Uppark’s beautiful Georgian interiors, including its atmospheric servants’ quarters, can be explored on new bookable guided tours. Michaela Saunders-Hall, Visitor Operations Manager, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming visitors back to Uppark, and excited to be opening our gardens, café and second-hand bookshop for free so that everyone can enjoy popping here for a delicious slice of cake and a brew with a view! “Our enthusiastic volunteers are all ready to guide visitors through the house with stories of the Fetherstonehaugh’s, H.G Wells and Lady Emma

The South Downs National Park is full of iconic gems that make for great photographs – from the stunning landscape, to the awe-inspiring wildlife, to the majestic old buildings and street scenes. As the National Park is celebrating its 15th birthday this year, people are being invited to photograph some of their favourite things about the South Downs – whether that be locations, views, towns and villages, heritage, food and drink, or whatever the imagination can think of! The prizes for the competition, Three cheers for 15 years: South Downs favourites, will be £250 for first place, £150 for second place, £75 for third place and £50 for fourth place.

The judging panel has a line-up of acclaimed photographers, including Howard Klein, who sits on the Royal Photographic Society’s Landscape Committee, Rachael Talibart, Finn Hopson, and Carlotta Luke. Claire Blow, Deputy Editor of Outdoor Photography, returns to the panel, alongside Jan Knowlson, Biodiversity Officer for the National Park, and Vanessa Rowlands, Chair of the National Park Authority. The deadline for entries will be midnight on Friday on 31 October 2025. The winners will be announced in January 2026 and there will be a public vote for the People’s Choice winner with a prize of £100. So get snapping and submit your images!

We’re here to be a round table for poetry where everyone is welcome. We are a poetry organisation that does all sorts of things - from hosting our much-acclaimed biennial festival in Winchester, to our popular Winchester Poetry Prize competition, to our wider work with schools and community organisations.
The Alresford Show is organised by the Alre The Romsey Show takes place on Saturday 13 September at the Broadlands Estate in Romsey. It is one of the largest one-day country shows in the South and is run by a large team of dedicated volunteers. The show provides a fantastic day out with something for all the family to enjoy!

We are here to share, showcase, celebrate and champion great poetry - because we believe in its power to bring us all together and make a positive, enriching difference to our lives and the society we live in. We are a hub for poetry locally, nationally and internationally - from Winchester to the world.
Access to the site is very easy from the A33 which is the main road between Winchester and Basingstoke. Please purchase your car pass with your festival ticket. There is a drop off point before entering the Car Park. There is no other parking allowed within walking distance of the site. There is a Railway station at Micheldever Station just 2.5 miles away. The service is on the South West Mainline from Waterloo to Southampton and runs regularly weekdays and weekends. Sorry there are no rural bus stops near the festival.
Winchester Poetry Festival was established in 2013 with the first festival taking place in September 2014. We also promote one-off events and work in partnership with Hampshire Cultural Trust to run the Hampshire Poet programme and the Hampshire Young Poet Competition.
Mucky Weekender is held in 30 acres of parkland with no hardstanding areas. The ground is reasonably flat and even. Whilst there are some sheltered areas (marquees, stretch tents and performance spaces), it is mainly an open-air event. Ground conditions are therefore weather dependent (if we experience extreme weather the ground may become muddy), therefore mobility across the site may become compromised.
Winchester Poetry Festival 2025 is a celebration of poetry performances, readings, workshops and activities for all. Curated by Clare Pollard on the theme "Revisiting The Classics" Featured poets include Diane Seuss, Mona Arshi, Richard Scott, Roy McFarlane, Joelle Taylor, Fiona Benson, Luke Kennard and Mary Jean Chan. They will be exploring the work of Marvell, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Edward Thomas, Keats, Dante, Al-Busiri, Bing Xin, Adrienne Rich and more.

Winchester Poetry Festival 2025 takes place this October. The in-person weekend will be held at The ARC, Winchester from the 10-12 October. There are fringe events around the city and online workshops from the 2 October.
This year the main ring will feature vintage machinery, Romsey Old Cadets, the heavy horse parade and more. Attractions across the Showground include the Grand Parade of livestock, popular Countryside Area, equine classes, live music and stunning floral displays. Bring your dog and take part in the Family Dog Show. Other exhibits include classic cars, steam engines and tents featuring honey, art and horticulture. The Show welcomes a wide range of local businesses and organisations, with shopping opportunities galore. The dedicated Food Zone, complete with Beggars Fair performance stage and picnic area, offers a variety of food and drink from local producers using quality ingredients. The Food Zone is also home to the Hampshire Fare Skills Kitchen featuring chef demonstrations and producer talks. With free entry to the Show for children aged 11 years and under (no ticket required), there are plenty of fun activities for all ages including the mobile farm, My Little Explorers forest school area and lots more! Trust joins national call to ban bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is supporting a new campaign from The Wildlife Trusts calling for a UKwide ban on destructive bottom trawling in offshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The campaign, launched during National Marine Week, coincides with a government consultation on banning bottom-towed fishing gear in 41 offshore MPAs - areas at sea designed to protect special habitats or wildlife. Key sites close to our waters include the Offshore Brighton, Offshore Overfalls and Albert Field Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), and the Wight-Barfleur Reef Special Area of Conservation (SAC). While the Solent is home to some of the richest and most diverse marine habitats in the UK - from saltmarsh to seagrass meadows and coastal mudflats to subtidal reefs - many of the species found here depend on healthy habitats far beyond the shoreline. Offshore areas are vital links in the wider marine ecosystem that connects coastal waters with the deeper seas beyond – and are vital parts of this connected ecosystem. The Trust is emphasising the crucial role these offshore MPAs play in supporting marine life that can be found in local inshore waters such as the Solent - one of the UK's most ecologically rich but pressured coastal zones. Emily Stroud, Marine Nature Recovery Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “The Solent’s marine environment is only part of the story. Our seas are a vast,

interconnected network - what happens offshore affects what we see and protect on our shores. From migratory species like European eels, bass, and thresher sharks, to species breeding in the Solent like cuttlefish, marine life needs safe habitats throughout its life cycle, across coastal and offshore waters.
“Even though the Solent has some local protections, the fight doesn’t end at our shores,” adds Emily. “It’s all connected. If we want to see eels returning to our rivers, seagrass thriving in our harbours, and healthy fisheries for future generations, we need to stand up now for the whole marine ecosystem.
“That’s why protecting the seabed in the wider English Channel is crucial - not just for biodiversity but for the health of our fisheries and the long-term recovery of marine ecosystems we all rely on.
“Protecting offshore sites supports local marine life, healthy fisheries, and more resilient ecosystems overall.”

Bottom trawling - where heavy nets are dragged along the seafloor - is widely recognised as one of the most damaging fishing practices. It destroys fragile habitats, disturbs carbon-storing sediments, and undermines the biodiversity MPAs were set up to protect. The Solent already has partial protection through local byelaws that restrict bottom-towed gear in certain habitats, such as seagrass meadows and some mud and sand flats. However, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust stresses that these protections are just one piece of a larger ecological puzzle. Many species seen in the Solent migrate across wide areas of sea and rely on connected, healthy seabed habitats throughout their lifecycles.

PERSUASION & POETRY FESTIVAL AT JANE AUSTEN'S HOUSE
The Persuasion & Poetry Festival will run from 12 – 21 September and offers a packed programme of events from talks and tours to workshops, special events and performance. At the heart of the festival is Jane Austen’s last completed novel, Persuasion – a most mature work full of poetry, autumnal wistfulness and longing. The Festival programme kicks off on 12th September with a poetry evening at local bookshop Goldfinch Books, starring fabulous guest poet Rachel Long. Poetry continues into the weekend with an inspiring poetry workshop and talk by Maura Dooley– award winning poet, Austen lover, and former Poet in Residence at Jane Austen’s House. We’ll be hosting inspiring creative workshops including Botanicals of the Regency led by Geanina Grigore, and Mindful Painting by Kristina Kivu, which promise to be inspiring and relaxing – and a lot of fun! There will also be some festival favourites, from our popular free Sewing Circle and Drop in and Draw events, to a magical Reading Aloud of scenes from Persuasion in the Drawing Room.
