LEARNING FOR LIFE AT WELBORNE September is often described as a second New Year. Fresh school uniforms are unpacked and labelled, notebooks are filled with good intentions for the coming months and families settle back into familiar routines after the summer holidays. Autumn is a season of new beginnings, making it the perfect time to reflect on the role education will play in shaping Welborne’s future.
A Community Built Around Learning
Welborne has been designed as a place where people can put down roots and thrive throughout every stage of life. Education is a vital part of that vision. As the community grows, plans include a nursery and a primary school, located at the heart of the Village Centre as part of the first phase of Welborne. In time, two further primary schools and a secondary school will open, ensuring that learning and opportunity are never far from home. Education, of course, is about much more than classrooms. It is about nurturing curiosity, building confidence and creating opportunities for young people to reach their potential. By placing learning at the centre of community life, Welborne is being designed to support future generations in the decades to come.
Opening Doors to Opportunity
Welborne is working in partnership with schools, colleges and universities to open up new pathways for learning, skills and future careers through career events, enrichment activities and work experience programmes. Plans are also progressing for a construction academy, providing skills training across a range of built environment and construction trades. In turn, this will support local employment prospects and contribute to the long-term economic success of Hampshire. Together, these education plans reflect a core ambition: to create a place where learning continues throughout life and opportunity is accessible to all.
Enjoying the Season
While pupils may be returning to school, there is still plenty of late summer left to enjoy at Welborne. The playground at Welborne Park is proving to be a very popular destination for families, while the woodland paths through Dashwood offer the perfect setting for a late-summer walk as the first signs of autumn begin to appear. And whether you’re celebrating a first day at a new school, catching up with friends or simply taking a break, The Corner Cafe opposite Welborne Park is the perfect place to pause for a coffee, lunch or ice cream!

GRANTS HELP CHILBOLTON VILLAGE SHOP AND TEAROOM GROW AND EXPAND A popular village shop and tearoom in Chilbolton is investing in its future after receiving more than £21,000 in grant funding from Test Valley Borough Council. Nicky Bond, owner of Chilbolton Village Shop and Tearoom, has secured £13,400 from the Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF) and £8,300 from the Rural Enterprise Grant to support improvements to the business and help it expand its food offering. The funding has enabled the shop to be reconfigured, bringing together its freshly prepared food service with an upgraded coffee machine and display fridge. The new layout provides better customer experience, improves staff efficiency, and creates more space for food-to-go. The post office counter has also been moved to the rear of the shop, giving customers greater privacy when using the service. Alongside the improvements to the shop, Nicky has established an offsite kitchen at Stonefield Park on the outskirts of Chilbolton. The additional facility will allow the business to increase production of food to go and ready meals, while also supporting the growth of its catering services for private and corporate customers. The grants have contributed towards the purchase and installation of specialist kitchen equipment including a gas oven, freezer, chiller, and dishwasher. Nicky and her husband Andy recently celebrated 10 years at the shop and are proud to support local producers by stocking a wide range of high-quality local products. The business also plays an important role in the community by catering for a variety of local organisations and events. Nicky Bond said: "I am so grateful for the grants. If they had not been available, we would never have been able to make this investment. We’d been making-do for years, but I’ve now been able to realise my vision for the shop. I could not have done it without the help of my husband Andy and the fantastic support of my staff, the village and my customers. We are all thrilled with the transformation."

IS THERE EVER A PERFECT TIME TO MOVE? The property market is shaped by countless factors, from interest rates and government policy to inflation, global events, and buyer confidence. Yet despite the headlines, one thing remains constant: no one can accurately predict what comes next. We optimistically hope that waiting a little longer will bring the perfect conditions to move but more often than not, that "perfect" moment never arrives. Instead, another event emerges, another headline dominates, and the cycle begins again. Property has always been a long-term investment rather than a short-term play. Markets naturally experience periods of growth, correction, and recovery, but over time they have repeatedly demonstrated resilience. The people who tend to benefit most are not those who try to time the market perfectly, but those who make informed decisions when their own circumstances are right. For buyers, that could mean stepping onto the ladder and beginning to build equity or a rental investment portfolio. For sellers, it means presenting a well-priced property that stands out, regardless of wider market sentiment. Timing the market is far less important than understanding your own goals. While nobody can control economic conditions, everyone can control their preparation, expectations, and decisions. In property, the best move is rarely about finding the perfect market it's about recognising the right moment for you. For expert property advice contact The Country House Company on: 01264 312832.

REJOICE! - SACRED MUSIC AT ITS BOLDEST - SOUTHERN VOICES AUTUMN CONCERT A rare chance to experience two towering and rarely performed, choral works on 24 October in St Paul’s, Winchester at 7.30pm. Rejoice! will showcase Benjamin Britten's Rejoice in the Lamb, a truly unique work paired with Leonard Bernstein's declamatory Chichester Psalms alongside William Walton’s dramatic Chichester Service and works by Elgar, Stanford, Rubbra and Berkeley. The programme is built around some of the most visionary and musically important commissions made by the Dean of Chichester, Walter Hussey, in the mid-twentieth century.
A NEW CHAPTER FOR EMBLEY SAILING Embley’s sailing programme is embarking on an exciting new chapter with the arrival of a beautifully restored Scampi 30 yacht that will expand opportunities for students and strengthen the school's growing keelboat fleet. For several years, sailing has been a distinctive part of life at Embley with the benefits to students extending well beyond the water, including honing life skills and building resilience while developing a sense of adventure. As students learn to navigate the winds and waves, they also navigate challenges and build confidence on and off the water. The addition the Scampi 30 marks a significant investment in the future of the programme. Over coming years, the new yacht will introduce students to cruising, seamanship, adventure sailing and life on the water, broadening the experiences available to young sailors. Sailing opportunities begin early at Embley. Prep pupils can gain their RYA 1 dinghy qualifications, while sailing is offered as a timetabled sport option for Senior School students from Easter through to October with more than 120 students taking to the water each month. A key focus of the programme is the development of character and leadership. Through practical, hands-on experiences, students learn perseverance, teamwork and responsibility; qualities that are invaluable in all aspects of life. Whether it's working together to rig a boat or strategising during a race, teamwork is at the heart of sailing. Students develop essential communication and interpersonal skills, learning to trust and rely on one another. Embley sailors regularly complete in national and international events including the Round the Island Race and the British Schools Dinghy Racing Championships. Several students have gone on to represent Great Britain at the Youth World Championships.
Winchester-based chamber choir, Southern Voices have a longestablished reputation for performing a wide variety of choral music and styles to a very high standard. The programme has been put together by the choir’s Musical Director: Jamal Sutton whose flair for choosing imaginative, exciting and inspiring music continues. They will be joined by former royal harpist: Alis Huws and percussionist George English bringing vibrant colour and energy to what promises to be a scintillating concert.
Full programme details and tickets £20 (concessions £12) from southernvoices.co.uk or 0333 666 4466. Booking fees apply.

Embley’s keelboat programme operates out of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, which provides access to outstanding facilities and sailing waters while supporting the school’s delivery of sailing activities. This partnership enables students to gain experience in a wide range of conditions and disciplines, from competitive racing to longer cruising adventures. Sailing also helps students build a deeper connection with the natural environment and a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards the sea, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Embley’s resident marine biologist and the boats also serve as platforms for scientific inquiry, enriching students’ learning experiences.

Incoming Head, Chafyn Godolphin, Chris Eades, commented: "I am delighted by the fantastic news of our A-level students. It is testament to the students; their hard work and sustained commitment to improvement alongside the high-quality relationships that exist between staff and students that allow the best in everyone to shine. We wish them well as leavers and know they go into the world well prepared through their time spent with us." From September, Godolphin and Chafyn Grove will come together as Chafyn Godolphin School, combining their strengths to create a leading co-educational day school for Salisbury and the surrounding region. The new school will provide an exceptional educational experience for students from Nursery to Sixth Form. As Godolphin celebrates the achievements of our 2026 Sixth Form cohort, these results are a fitting tribute to the school's longstanding tradition of academic excellence, individual ambition and personal growth. These values will continue to be at the heart of Chafyn Godolphin School as it begins an exciting new chapter.

CARE HOME RESIDENTS, FAMILIES AND LOCAL COMMUNITY ENJOY OPEN-AIR PERFORMANCE OF ROMEO & JULIET
The cast with some of the audience
20
Residents, families and members of the wider community gathered in the beautiful grounds of The Dower House in Winchester to enjoy a wonderful open-air performance of Shakespeare's timeless classic, Romeo & Juliet.
A vintage car procession will make two exciting appearances throughout the afternoon hooting down Duck Street. If you can’t make the fun in the afternoon, we are offering a children’s disco early evening followed by a party in the Eagle pub and garden. Delicious Thai food served by Aom from Salisbury Market Square at a competitive price will be available with the fantastic background music of Butler’s Rat and Fallen Heroes. If you like a quiet moment amongst all the fun we exhibit produce, flowers, craft, photography, baking and paintings exhibited by enthusiasts in various buildings within walking distance of the village centre. The buildings referenced are the heart of our Abbotts Ann community. Our local artist Matt Kirby has drawn the Eagle Inn, the War Memorial Hall, St Mary’s Church and the Community Shop and we have included his drawings on our fete advertising poster. Matt has autism and as well as painting Matt has been a deliverer of The Forum Magazine for many years. Matt will be selling his paintings at the fete.
We look forward to seeing you at our event which is filled with so much local talent including a Ukulele band, Middle Wallop & Andover Military Wives Choir, Handbells and local boy band The Buzz!! There is ample free parking too off Church Road. All fete funds raised will be distributed to our vital village community groups. A very special thank you to our fete supporters Bluebird Care and Evans and Partridge along with many other local businesses organisations, residents and volunteers. Christine Farmery, Activities Co-ordinator at The Dower House, said: "The cast were absolutely wonderful. Seeing our residents and staff encouraged to get up, dance and become part of the production was fabulous. The two residents who received personal visits from the cast in their rooms were especially touched by the experience. It brought such joy to everyone involved." With a smile on her face, Resident Mrs Read, recalled the experience, saying, "This young, good-looking man came into my room, took hold of my hand and sang to me. I was so thrilled! I've never had anyone sing like that to me before. He had a powerful and a beautiful voice!"
Chris Golding, Chief Operating Officer at The Dower House, said: "Whilst some residents still enjoy trips to the theatre, others are no longer able to attend performances in the traditional way, so it is a real pleasure to bring the theatre to them. The cast truly embraced the spirit of the day – Romeo and Juliet even sang a duet for one of our residents in their room, creating a very special moment that will be remembered for a long time."
The event formed part of The Dower House's ongoing commitment to providing meaningful and enriching experiences for residents, ensuring access to arts, culture and community events within the comfort of their own home. The Dower House is an independent, privately owned care home in Headbourne Worthy, Winchester, set within five acres of beautifully landscaped gardens, offering both residential care and nursing care.
The cast's enthusiasm and engagement extended beyond the stage, with residents and staff encouraged to dance, sing and become part of the performance itself.

DESK WORKER WELLNESS: SMALL CHANGES THAT MAKE A BIG DIFFERENCE BY OSTEOPATH, ROBERTO SALVATI
STOCKBRIDGE OSTEOPATHIC PRACTICE
Emma Wightman and Associates Specialising in women’s health, sports and paediatrics. A gentle hands-on approach for newborns, through to adulthood and in pregnancy
Also Massage Therapy Pilates, 1 to 1 and small group Acupuncture Nutrition Whether you work from home, in an office, or split your time between the two, chances are you spend more hours sitting than you realise. While poor posture isn't the sole cause of neck pain, headaches or back pain, prolonged sitting and an unsuitable workstation can gradually overload muscles and joints, leaving you stiff, sore and less productive. As osteopaths at Stockbridge Osteopathic Practice, we often see patients who feel great after treatment, only for their symptoms to return a few days later. The reason? Their daily habits haven't changed. The good news is that small adjustments to your workspace and routine can make a remarkable difference. Start with your workstation Ideally, your monitor should be at eye level with a separate keyboard and mouse, allowing your shoulders to stay relaxed and your neck in a neutral position. If you work on a laptop, consider using a laptop stand with a wireless keyboard and mouse to achieve the same effect. Your chair matters too. Sit right back into it, bring yourself close to the desk and avoid perching on the edge. If you're looking for an alternative, a Z Chair encourages active sitting by gently engaging your postural muscles throughout the day. (You can find a great one here, designed by an Osteopath: www.alexprinceosteopathy.co.uk) Movement beats perfect posture Rather than striving for one "perfect" sitting position, aim to change position regularly. Our bodies are designed to move. Try these simple habits: • Stand up every 30-60 minutes, even if it's just for 30 seconds. • Walk around while making a phone call. • Keep a water bottle nearby - staying hydrated naturally encourages regular movement breaks. • Set reminders or place a sticky note on your screen prompting you to "Move". Simple stretches throughout the day Just a minute of movement can reduce stiffness and reset your

posture. Gentle seated spinal rotations, side bends, neck stretches and upper back extension exercises are all excellent options to break up long periods of sitting. If you'd like to follow along, we've created a free exercise video on the Video Guides section of our website called ‘5 Minute Desk Break’. If you're regularly experiencing headaches, neck or shoulder pain, back pain, hip pain or wrist discomfort, don't simply accept it as part of desk life. An osteopath can assess the underlying causes, advise on your workstation setup and provide tailored treatment to help you stay comfortable for the long term. We’re looking forward to helping you! Bee Afraid, Bee Very Afraid (Part2 )
© Lucia Foster-Found 2026 | www.luciafosterfound.com | e @luciafosterfound Continued from August 2026 “I don’t know what to say. They’re not bothering me. There are lots of them here, but they’re very benign. I’m not even wearing a bee suit. My grandfather used to keep bees and never wore any protective gear.” I couldn’t tell if there was a hint of smugness in his voice, but I had my suspicions. Deciding to sit it out until my busy little burglars lost interest and vacated the awning, I reached for my current book – The Hunger Games. When my daughter first suggested I read a story about children killing each other for the entertainment of others, I was horrified. But she’s a terrier, my daughter, and she’d already bought the books with her hard-earned Australian dollars. They arrived; not reading them meant boarding the great ship “Mummy Guilt”, seasick amidst towering waves of remorse every time I looked at the damned things stacked on the table. My child is a demon. She’s in my brain like a parasitic fungus, pushing the buttons, controlling me like one of those dressage riders – an unseen squeeze of her knees and Mummy was doing the Hunger Games extended trot. She knows me better than I know myself. She was, of course, absolutely right. I loved it. But Mummy was having trouble concentrating on the children-killingchildren book because the buzzing outside was getting louder. Oh no. Actually, it wasn’t. It was coming from inside, which is why it was louder. The sly, sneaky, underhand tiny miracles of nature had gotten into the caravan. One landed on the page I was reading and wandered about with a you-canrun-but-you-can’t-hide insouciance. I dropped Katniss and Co. and ran for it. I burst out of the caravan and through the buzzing awning to the door. “Gosh and darn it,” (or something similar) I muttered as I fumbled with the zip, making a large enough opening to fall through, landing in a heap by my Darling and his flying entourage. “Ah, you’ve decided to come out. Good for you. Have you switched off…” Paul’s voice tailed off as I struggled to my feet and sprinted away across the meadow to the car, a scream emerging from my chest. I made it to the vehicle and shut myself in, contemplating driving away to the next village. When the passenger door opened, I literally jumped, banging my thighs against the underside of the steering wheel.
24
“Are you alright?” Paul got in and looked at me with real concern on his face... and several bees on his shirt. “Gosh and darn it!” (or something similar) I yelled. Flinging the car door open, I was off again. Sprinting on my fifty-year-old legs, which were taken by surprise at this sudden activity, I ran out of the gate and into the road. The road was remarkably bee-free, probably because they were all enjoying the impromptu festival of mead in the meadow. The same, however, could not be said of motor vehicles. Whilst I didn’t die from multiple bee stings that day – or any other day for that matter – I was nearly hit by a passing bus. I mean, what were the odds? Rural buses were as rare as finding something you actually liked, in your size, in a clearance sale. I leapt back onto the verge as the great red thing passed just in front of my nose, the waft of air sending my hair flying back off my face as I contemplated my mortality. Paul was both pleased and surprised when I returned to the Theatrum Apium. The bees, sensing I’d had a brush with real death and no longer feared them, lost interest in terrorising me. I was no fun anymore. They turned their attention to getting as much of their honey back as possible before we tried to turn it into booze. However, all that work: the sterilising, the decanting, the running, the screaming? And all the efforts from the little bees to make the magical, everlasting elixir in the first place? All for nought. The stuff we made – you couldn’t call it mead – was undrinkable. Because, it seems, you have to use high-grade honey to make mead, and the honey we’d been given was somehow contaminated. Hey ho. At some future time, we’ll have another stab at mead making à la BBC Good Food. Maybe on a smaller, more manageable scale that doesn’t involve catering-sized saucepans, a bucket of honey and close proximity to half a million bees. Bee fear is called melissophobia. Who knew? One would reasonably assume it meant a fear of people called Melissa, but it seems not. And actually, I’ve never met anyone called Melissa. Well, whatever it’s called, I no longer have it. My extreme terror whilst cooped up with bees in a caravan and my neardeath-by-bus experience seem to have cancelled each other out. I no longer dread the buzz from our small saviours of the planet; there are worse things than a bee sting or two.

The Hampshire Fair runs an annual series of events and talks to raise money for three local grassroots charities. Its main event is a shopping fair, held this year at The Grange in Northington on Wednesday 23 September. In a large marquee set in The Grange’s beautiful parkland over 70 handpicked stalls, 20 of them new to the fair this year, will sell fashion, food, homewares and jewellery. Sustenance will be in the form of a café, run by Becka Cooper, along with Grange vineyard wine from their vintage Land Rover. Parking is free and plentiful, and the views are outstanding – perhaps factor in a parkland walk before or after shopping. Money raised at all Hampshire Fair events goes to three small charities, each of which is supported for a minimum of two years. Current charities are The Royal Southampton Yacht Club Trust, which gets young people, principally young carers, out on the water and to social events. Kids on Track Andover empowers young people through activity camps, mentoring, trips and visits. The Grange Festival: Illuminating Creative Pathways brings hundreds of schoolchildren to live opera each year, as well as providing paid roles both on stage and behind the scenes. The Hampshire Fair at The Grange, Northington will take place on Wednesday 23 September from 9.30am–4pm. There will be plentiful free parking, food and drink will be available from a vintage Grange Vineyard Land Rover and in a cafe run by infamous local caterer Becka Cooper. RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Homemade Piri Piri Sauce Bring the taste of summer to your table with this crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken, served with a homemade Piri Piri Sauce, created by Ideal Collection’s Group Executive Chef, Matt Whitfield – the perfect dish for making the most of the summer season.
INGREDIENTS
METHOD
FOR THE CHICKEN:
FOR THE SAUCE:
• 8 Chicken Thighs, Deboned & Skinned • 400g Buttermilk • 4 Tbsp Garlic Powder • 4 Tbsp Dried Mixed Herbs • 400g Gluten-Free Flour • 100g Gluten-Free • Breadcrumbs
For The Sauce:
• 5 Roasted Red Peppers • 10 Red Chillies • 2 Tbsp Paprika • 1 Tbsp Chilli Powder • 100ml Red Wine Vinegar • 4 Garlic Cloves • 3 Shallots (Echalion) • 300ml Veg Oil • Juice Of 2 Lemons • Salt/Pepper
Peel the shallots and garlic, then blend all the remaining ingredients together to make a rough pulp. Place into a pan and cook on a low heat for 20-30 min. Once cooked re-blend the pulp into a smooth sauce and pass through a fine sieve. Season with salt and pepper as required.
FOR THE CHICKEN:
Mix the buttermilk, garlic and herbs together in a bowl, place the chicken in the mix and leave in a fridge overnight. In a separate bowl mix together the gluten-free flour and glutenfree breadcrumbs. Remove the chicken from the butter milk mixture and cover with the flour, making sure it is really roughed up to make extra crispy. Fry the chicken in a deep fat fryer at 180c for 5 mins. Lift from the oil for 2 min and repeat this process 3-4 times. The coating will go crispy and golden brown. Temperature probe the centre of the chicken and check it is above 75c to be cooked through. Place the prepared sauce on the bottom of a serving bowl and top with the chicken.

Hooray, the Andover Museum & the Museum of the Iron Age - lives! By Yinnon Ezra MBE
Danbury Hill is a lovely ancient place to wander. It’s a lovely spot with views on a clear day for miles. Most people who go regularly will sense a tranquil atmosphere and sometime you can feel - maybe the ghosts of the past. After all it is the site of probably the most researched and well-known Iron Age settlement in the UK. Professor Barry Cunliffe and his team from Oxford University, often involving many a local enthusiast spent over thirty years digging and researching this site. Many who visit are probably unaware that some of the finds and the full story is told just off the High Steet in Andover. We live in a wonderful part of the UK. If you walk up to Stockbridge Down you have a 360-degree view of our immediate landscape. You will see several “hills” – most of these are the remains of settlements. Someone described the Test Valley and Andover as the “capital of the Iron Age”. The town had been called may things but this distinguished description can be a surprise. Yet by an accident of fate the magical story of this mysterious hill together with the stunning Fullerton Mosaic is on our door step. You do not have to travel to London or line up to go
34
into the British Museum – you just have to go to the old school building in Andover to soak up this beautiful history. Yet I met a local Councillor some years ago who boasted to me that if his grandchildren were annoying, he dragged them round Andover Museum. I admit that the bit of the Museum that tells the story of Andover probably needs updating. But this gem of a venue which has a long and proud community history hosting everything from the Andover Loft Singers to numerous local artists, local groups, ex-pupils of the school is much loved - including the numerous volunteers/visitors who keep it going. The news that this wonderful facility is to survive is fantastic!! The opportunity to invest in this Museum with an exciting reinvented presentation is just too good to miss. Perhaps even linking the story of the Town particularly its more recent past being highlighted next to the new Theatre? But firmly linking it to the magical story of the Iron age. To my knowledge there is no other Museum in the UK that focuses completely on this often-unknown period in our history – it is unique!
One of Andover and Test Valley's huge assets is its creative artistic community. Many live and earn their living in our Borough. Sometimes the occasional shop front in the town has/is being used to help in providing a venue for this work. Supporting this is a very wise investment NOT a luxury! The “creative industries” make an enormous contribution to the UK economy. It makes real economic sense to invest in providing space and platforms for those who can bring flair, laughter and a new “vibe” into the area. Perhaps the Andover Museum could evolve into an Arts and Heritage focus – artists and others working in the building perhaps even helping to animate the Museum? A buzzing welcoming building telling an important story about the past but also shouting strongly about the present and the future. Andover Museum and the Museum of the Iron Age have a promising future - the ghosts of Danbury will dance with joy forever!

For something more informal, our wood-fired oven serves freshly made flatbreads, while the bar is the perfect place for a cocktail, a glass of wine or a catch-up with friends. Afternoon Tea is a favourite with both locals and visitors. Served daily, it is an opportunity to enjoy a selection of sandwiches, homemade cakes and freshly baked scones with clotted cream and jam, alongside a pot of Cornish Tregothnan tea. For a special occasion, why not add a glass of English sparkling? As autumn arrives, the hotel becomes a cosy base for exploring the Test Valley, with the Danebury Drawing Room offering a warm and welcoming space to relax after a day outdoors. Our individually styled bedrooms provide a peaceful place to unwind, from garden-facing rooms to spacious top-floor bedrooms, each with its own character. And yes, four-legged guests are very welcome too.
The Grosvenor is also a destination for celebrations, weddings, private dining and business events. From an intimate lunch in our book-lined Library to larger gatherings in the Market Room, our spaces can be tailored to suit everything from a milestone birthday to a corporate event or wedding. For something truly special, exclusive use offers the opportunity to make The Grosvenor entirely your own. There is always something happening throughout the year, from seasonal celebrations and special dining events to live music. On that birthday, he believed he would be free to leave the ship and dedicate his life to the destruction of piracy. However, the pirate king soon realised that Frederick's birthday falls on February 29, a leap year. Frederick begins to question his fate: will he be forced to work on the king's ship until he is 84? And will his sweetheart wait for him? Join Illyria for an evening filled with glittering wit and glorious music, performed by a talented cast of six actors and singers, accompanied by a full orchestra. King Alfred Autumn Country Bus Day
oKAB was formed in 1985 to assist James Freeman in the preservation of two KAMS buses that he had purchased - Tiger Cub 104 (WCG 104) and Atlantean 591 (HOR 591E - since scrapped but parts used to help restore HOR 592E). Since then further ex-KAMS buses and coaches have been rescued, including two repatriated from the USA. FoKAB aims to maintain 16 vehicles in a roadworthy condition.
In 2000 we became a Registered Charity, rather than just a group of enthusiasts preserving buses and coaches. Anyone who has travelled on our vehicles at our running days or at other events will have noticed, even the crews try to wear the correct uniform of the 1960s. Our aims are eventually to house all our vehicles together in a living museum in Hampshire to assist in educating the public in the role of transport in Winchester and in the surrounding district. We of course already recreate the past when we hold our Running Days and show our vehicles at many local events.
FoKAB's membership now stands at about 200 people. One may ask why there still so much interest in a bus company of such relatively small size that has been gone for nearly fifty years? The answer lies in the nature of King Alfred Motor Services (R. Chisnell & Sons Ltd) itself. King Alfred was one of the few privately owned bus companies to run a municipal service. KAMS was proudly independent, with the statue of King Alfred on the green side panels of its buses to add that ultimate distinction. It is also down to the enthusiasm of members to keep the memory of KAMS alive and protect part of Winchester's great heritage.
40
Being a charity can have many advantages. We benefit strongly from the Gift Aid scheme where we are able to reclaim the income tax paid on donations. In 2004, Hampshire County Council made a small grant towards the restoration of JAA 708. As we have a unique collection comprising all known surviving ex-KAMS buses and coaches, our next aim is to attain museum status. At our 2004 Running Day we launched our new mobile information unit to explain the work of FoKAB and the history of KAMS. Preserving the past takes both time and money. This is where you can help by becoming a member or by making a donation! We hold regular working sessions on the vehicles near Winchester on Tuesday afternoon and evenings and all day Saturday. OUR NEXT EVENT
King Alfred Autumn Country Bus Day Sunday 13 September 2026 As part of the Heritage Open Days scheme
managed locally by the Hampshire History Trust, FoKAB's theme for this autumn is "rides out into the country", taking passengers over the spectacular chalk downs to the east of the city. There will be regular departures all day from St Catherine's Park & Ride site, where activities will be centred. There will be a frequent shuttle service all day between the Broadway and St Catherine's. There is a specific reason for being based at St Catherine's Park & Ride, as we have designed the day to be unaffected by potential congestion expected around the north and west of the city because of the weekend closure of junction 9 of the M3 Motorway between 11 and 14 September.
Regular free rides will operate:
• Hazeley Down to Owslebury, Twyford and Colden Common. • Fairdown to Morn Hill for the Science Centre. • Tichborne Down to Alresford with its pretty streets and the Watercress Line station. • Cheesefoot Head to Cheriton passing the Flower Pots Inn. You can pre-order a programme for £7 (inc. UK postage) by visiting our online store, which will be delivered when printed in early September.

King John’s House and Museum secures grant from The National Lottery Heritage Fund to look towards future King John’s House in Romsey has been awarded £175,650, including £58,650 in match funding, by The National Lottery Heritage Fund to look towards the long-term future of the museum and heritage site. The grant will fund KJH 2030: From Crisis to Confidence, a new project which will create a whole-site masterplan to transform the museum spaces and broaden audience engagement, creating a vibrant local museum for Romsey and ensuring its long-term viability and sustainability. This vital funding will facilitate a programme of specialist studies and community engagement to inform and shape a long-term strategy to protect this treasured cultural resource for future generations. The resulting masterplan will help King John’s House tackle low visitor numbers post-Covid, rising costs and financial uncertainty. These factors, also experienced by other small independent museums, have been exacerbated by the fire damage to the site’s Grade I-listed medieval hall in February 2025. The masterplan will also build on the huge support for King John’s House within the wider community which became apparent in the aftermath of the fire.
Match funding has been generously provided by Test Valley Borough Council, Hampshire County Council Councillor Grant, Romsey Town Council, the Pilgrims Trust, Romsey and District Society, the King John’s House Garden Fund, Hampshire Field Club and the King John’s House Steering Group, Trustees and Volunteers. Freddie Law-Turner, Chair of Trustees for King John’s House, said: “We are absolutely delighted to have been awarded a Heritage Fund grant, to help us progress our plans to make King John's House and Museum a strong, sustainable, independent museum for the people of Romsey
44
and the surrounding area. “Our aim is always to combine our responsibility to preserve and care for one of the two most important buildings in Romsey with our duty to create a vibrant, engaging local museum for everyone. I would particularly like to thank my fellow trustees, our staff and volunteers who gave their time to shape the application, along with the Cultural Consulting Network and Caroe Architecture Ltd, who contributed so much to it.”
welcomed the news that King John’s House has been successful in its application for a first grant from the Heritage Fund. Speaking on behalf of Romsey Town Council, the Mayor said: “The Council very much values King John’s House as one of Romsey's key heritage assets. The Council looks forward to restoration of the Grade 1 listed building and the development of the site into Romsey’s Museum, gallery and events venue.”
Stuart McLeod, Director of England - London & South at The National Lottery Heritage Fund, said: “Thanks to National Lottery players, we are delighted to support King John’s House and Museum as it plans for the future. This funding will help develop a long-term vision for the site, ensuring this treasured heritage asset can continue to engage and inspire local people while building a sustainable future for generations to come.”
Following investigative specialist conservation work in recent months, the first stages of the restoration of the Medieval Hall will begin in autumn 2026. A centenary exhibition is planned for 2027, which will be the museum’s first exhibition following the fire. This will mark the ‘discovery’ of King John’s House by former owner Mabel Moody and archaeologist Walter Andrew in 1927 and its recognition as a key part of Romsey’s history.
Rachel White, Inspector of Historic Buildings and Areas at Historic England, said: “It’s great news that King John’s House have been successful in their bid to fund a framework and plan for the conservation of this exceptional 13th century building. We look forward to continuing to support the museum as they develop plans to secure a sustainable future for the museum for the local community.” Cllr Colin Burgess, Town Mayor of Romsey,
The King John’s House cafe at 13 Church Street, Romsey is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, while our heritage gardens are open to visitors all year round. For more information and to donate to the restoration appeal, please visit: www.kingjohnshouse.org.uk

Autumn Foraging:
Discovering Nature's Seasonal Harvest
A
s the days grow shorter and the air takes on a crisp edge, autumn offers one of the most rewarding seasons for foraging. Hedgerows, woodland edges, and country lanes become rich with wild foods that have sustained people for generations. From juicy blackberries to vibrant rosehips, the countryside provides an abundance of nutritious ingredients waiting to be discovered. Foraging is not only a wonderful way to connect with nature but also an opportunity to appreciate the changing seasons while gathering fresh, free produce. One of autumn's most familiar treasures is the blackberry. Found in hedgerows, woodland clearings, and along footpaths, blackberries are usually at their best from late August through September, although the season can extend into October depending on the weather. The deep purple fruits are packed with vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants. Sweet with a slight tartness, they are perfect for pies, crumbles, jams, syrups, and homemade cordials. Many experienced foragers follow the old tradition of avoiding blackberries after Michaelmas, as folklore suggests the devil cursed them after this date. In reality, later berries are often overripe or affected by mould and insects, making earlier harvests the better choice. Elderberries are another valuable autumn crop. These small, dark berries grow in large clusters on elder trees and ripen during late summer and early autumn. Unlike blackberries, elderberries should never be eaten raw in large quantities, as they contain compounds that can cause stomach upset. Cooking removes these compounds, making the berries ideal for syrups, jams, wines, and traditional remedies. Elderberry syrup has long been used as a comforting winter drink and is
46
valued for its rich flavour and high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C. As autumn progresses, hazelnuts begin to ripen beneath deciduous trees and within hedgerows. The nuts are ready when their green outer husks begin to split and the shells turn brown. Fresh hazelnuts have a mild, creamy flavour, while drying them for several weeks develops a richer taste. Hazelnuts are an excellent source of healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, and minerals such as magnesium. They can be roasted for snacks, added to baking, blended into nut butter, or sprinkled over salads and desserts. When collecting hazelnuts, it is important to leave plenty behind for wildlife, particularly squirrels, dormice, and woodland birds that rely on them as a vital food source. Sloes, the small blue-black fruits of the blackthorn bush, are another classic autumn find. They resemble tiny plums and are famously sharp and astringent when freshly picked. Traditionally, sloes are harvested after the first frost, although many modern foragers freeze them overnight to achieve the same effect. Their intense flavour softens during steeping, making them the key ingredient in the much-loved homemade sloe gin. They can also be transformed into jams, chutneys, and fruit preserves that balance their tartness with sugar and spices.
Bright red rosehips add vivid colour to hedgerows long after summer flowers have faded. These fruits develop on wild roses and are usually ready from September onwards. Rosehips are exceptionally rich in vitamin C and have been used for centuries in syrups, teas, and preserves. During the Second World War, rosehip syrup became an important nutritional supplement in Britain when citrus fruits were scarce. When preparing rosehips, care must be taken to remove the fine hairs surrounding the seeds, as they can irritate the mouth and digestive system. Once prepared, rosehips produce delicious jellies and warming herbal infusions. Responsible foraging is essential to protect both wildlife and the environment. Always make certain that you have correctly identified any plant before harvesting, and never eat anything unless you are completely confident of its identity. Only collect from areas free from pollution, avoid private land without permission, and harvest sustainably by taking only what you need. Leaving plenty behind ensures that birds, mammals, and insects can continue to benefit from nature's seasonal bounty. Autumn foraging is about far more than collecting food. It encourages people to slow down, observe the landscape, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Whether filling a basket with blackberries for a family crumble, gathering elderberries for winter syrup, cracking freshly roasted hazelnuts, infusing sloes for festive drinks, or making fragrant rosehip jelly, every harvest reflects the richness of the season. With knowledge, care, and respect for nature, autumn foraging becomes a rewarding tradition that celebrates the countryside's generous gifts year after year.

NATIONAL PARK WATERWAYS, ICONIC RIVERS IN NEED OF PROTECTION
SIXTEENTH SEASON OF SOMBORNE SESSIONS READY TO ROLL!
National Parks encompass some of the most biodiverse and important rivers in the country. They are home to a huge variety of wildlife, including rare species such as water vole, beaver, bittern, eel and salmon. They provide drinking water, support natural flood management, help tackle climate change, and are, of course, much valued by people as places for recreation and relaxation.
The 2026-7 season of the Somborne Sessions has now been finalised. This will be the sixteenth season of the Sessions, now firmly established as a venue for top-quality live music at value for money prices.
The chalk streams in the South Downs National Park are a clear example of iconic waterways. The chalk streams here are varied, ranging from the River Itchen flowing through Winchester all the way to the most natural and undisturbed small chalk scarp streams. They all share the common characteristics of a low and constant flow which rarely deviates from 10°C, creating the perfect environment for species such as water-crow foot, water star-wort. The silt-free riverbeds are vital for freshwater fish species like brown trout as the gaps in the gravel are perfect for fertilised eggs to develop. Despite being rare and precious, many chalk streams are in poor condition thanks to over abstraction – the removal of water from a natural source for a variety of uses such as drinking water. When too much water is removed from a river the flow rate slows leading to more silt building up and degrading vital habitats for species, pollutants become more concentrated and when combined with the effects of climate change water temperatures increase and become unsuitable for the wildlife in the water. National Parks should offer the highest level of protection to rivers however water companies and regulators have largely neglected and ignored National Park status, and it is time that they recognise this international nature designation.

The season begins at King’s Somborne Village Hall on Saturday 10 October with Rob Clamp and Trio. Hailing from Southampton but with a fan base extending across the UK and beyond, Rob is an absolutely zinging performer who blends classic vocals with acoustic guitar. He will be performing with a trio of his regular players. Saturday 14 November sees the Sessions welcoming The Celtic Social Club, seven Franco- Irish musicians who have made a big name for themselves with their daring re-readings of the Celtic music tradition. On Saturday 12 December, Alice Armstrong takes the stage. Alice has been a Top Three nominee at the Jazz FM Awards and was named Vocalist of the Year at the UK Blues Awards. Alex Roberts is our first act of the New Year. A highly acclaimed songwriter, multi-instrumentalist and bard, he performs at the Village Hall on 30 January 2027. Lucca Mae and Band, our guests on Saturday 13 March 2027, play what has been described as ska-infused soul and have sold out gigs across the UK as well as in Australia and Canada. To round the season off, on Saturday 17 April 2027 the Sessions welcome Lauren Housley and the Northern Cowboys. Yorkshire singer-songwriter Lauren and her band play an intriguing and brilliant blend of classic Northern Soul, blues rock and old-school Country.
At Campaign for National Parks we’re calling for strong clean water protections, establish legally binding water quality standards, improve storm overflow management, and set high ecological targets for all freshwater within National Parks.
As usual, all of the gigs will take place in King’s Somborne Village Hall (SO20 6PP), with doors opening each evening at 7.30pm for an 8pm start. Tickets are now on sale for all performances and are available from www. sombornesessions.co.uk where there is also more information about the season’s line-up. Season passes, giving admission to every gig, are also available at a price of £95, which offers a big saving on buying individual tickets for the six performances.
You can support our work to protect the National Parks you love. Joining us as a Friend is the easiest and most impactful way you can take action for National Parks, learn more at cnp.org.uk/support/join
Please note, however, that passes are a special pre-season deal only. To buy a pass, or for more information, please contact sombornesessions@gmail.com
Financial planning tips for parents
Parenthood comes with so many responsibilities that juggling them all can be overwhelming. It’s no wonder long-term financial planning often takes a back seat. Here are five ways to get started.
1. Build a rainy-day fund You should typically have at least six months’ worth of essential expenditure in an easy-access savings account to help pay the bills if you suffer a period of unemployment or cover unexpected emergencies.
2. Create a financial safety net Income protection pays out a proportion of your salary if you suffer from a long-term illness and are unable to work. It’s also worth considering life insurance, which pays out a lump sum if you pass away during the policy term. You should also check you have an up-to-date will.
3. Invest in your kids’ future While you may wish to keep your money in a savings account because investing tends to involve more risk than holding cash, history shows that over long periods, the stock market tends to perform better. A great way to invest for children is through a Junior Individual Savings Account (JISA). Investment gains are tax free, and your child won’t be able to access the money until they reach age 18.
4. Focus on your pension and savings If you’ve taken time off work to look after your children, it’s important to look for ways to top up your pension savings. The first step is to protect your state pension. To qualify for the maximum amount, you need to have paid national insurance (NI) contributions for 35 years.
If you’re not working, you’ll get NI credits automatically as long as you claim child benefit and your child is under 12. You can still receive these credits if you’ve claimed child benefit but have opted out of receiving payments.1 You should also consider topping up your workplace or private pensions. Pensions are a cost-effective way of saving for retirement because of the tax relief you receive on personal pension contributions.
5. Get some financial advice By understanding you and what you want to achieve in life, a wealth manager can help you decide how much you should be investing – and where.
