A Light Lunch ~ Panzanella (Tuscan tomato & bread salad)

Makes 2 Servings INGREDIENTS

METHOD

• 200G STALE CIABATTA LOAF (HOXTON BAKERY ) • 600G RIPE MIXED TOMATOES, ROUGHLY CHOPPED (ISLE OF WIGHT TOMATOES) • 1 SMALL ONION, PEELED AND VERY FINELY DICED • 1 RED PEPPER, SLICED IN BATONS • 2 TBS RED WINE VINEGAR • 6 TBS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL • A BUNCH OF FRESH BASIL • SHAVINGS OF OLD WINCHESTER - LYBURN CHEESE OR REPLACE WITH GOUDA • SEA SALT TO TASTE • FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPER TO TASTE • 1 HANDFUL SMALL CAPERS , DRAINED

Tear the ciabatta into rough 3cm pieces and place on a tray. Leave aside in a warm place for around 30 minutes – this helps to dry it out.

A delicious and refreshingly simple light summer meal.

Place the tomatoes in a bowl and season with salt and pepper. Rinse the capers, squeezing out any excess liquid and add to the bowl, along with the onion, pepper, ciabatta. Toss the mixture together with your hands, then stir in 2 tablespoons of vinegar and about 3 times as much extra virgin olive oil. Taste and add a little more salt, pepper, vinegar or oil, if needed. Tear in the basil leaves, stir together and serve. Plate up & enjoy!

Fostering Wellbeing in Young People

St Swithun’s Wellbeing and Grit Festival featuring Will Young

day dedicated to mental health, mindfulness and wellbeing; St Swithun’s School was transformed into a Wellbeing and Grit festival – featuring workshops, activities and a special appearance by Will Young. National pop artist and author of Be Yourself and Happier: The A-Z of Wellbeing, Will Young, gave an inspiring talk and took part in a Q&A hosted by sixth-form students. “I wanted to tell the girls that we are all so brilliantly unique and that there is nobody else like you in the world. The students listened so well, and the panel asked some excellent questions. “The special thing in a school like St Swithun’s is that you can come together as a collective on a day like this, like a family, and you can celebrate each other’s individuality. It has been a wonderful event and I’m so thankful to have been invited to speak.” The festival opened with a performance, Q&A and autograph session from The Entitled Sons. A charismatic band of brothers, The Entitled Sons shared their advice and stories on bullying and mental health, telling students, “When you find that thing you really love, try really hard at that because you could be doing it forever. You could even be doing it as a career.” Girls then visited different zones around the school grounds, each promoting a different aspect of wellbeing.

The relaxation zone offered a tranquil escape with calming experiences such as breathwork, charcoal yoga, perfume making and hypnotherapy. Dr Helen O’Connor, St Swithun’s clinical psychologist and festival organiser, explained, “The main aim for the day was to find opportunities for the students to focus on their wellbeing and to put themselves in situations that they may not normally have tried.”

Exemplifying this spirit of curiosity and challenge, girls immersed themselves in pottery throwing, African drumming and circus tricks in the enquiring and grit zone. Army veteran Rob Shenton later joined the zone to share his journey from a serious skull fracture and PTSD to representing Team UK in the Invictus Games, inspiring students with a powerful lesson in resilience and perseverance. “I think today has shown St Swithun’s at its very best, both in our focus on wellbeing and in the grit of the girls who have thrown themselves fully into activities they have never tried before, going from one to the next with huge smiles”, said Lucy Tipp, head of psychology at St Swithun’s. Prep students had the opportunity to explore wellbeing tools with sessions in breathwork, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and vision boarding before bouncing across the field in zorbs and enjoying an inflatable obstacle course. The petting zoo, complete with alpaca walking, was a highlight for all students. A myriad of activities continued to take place across the prep school

in the afternoon including dancing, nutrition workshops and yoga. The last zone was positive purpose and giving back. Students prepared flower arrangements, which they then delivered to a local care home, and baked cookies for The Winchester Beacon night shelter. Vicki from St Catherine’s View care home thanked all involved and said, “It was great to see that these were extremely well received by the residents – and the families in the homes visiting today. They have really brightened up the home.” St Swithun’s headmistress, Jane Gandee, reflecting on the festival said, “We feel that wellbeing is the foundation for success both in and beyond the classroom. Girls who feel supported and confident in themselves can achieve anything they set their minds to.” Prep pupils aged 3-11 benefited from the exposure to wellbeing tools and activities, and Prep Head Liz Norris added, “Unique experiences like this show our girls that looking after your wellbeing can be fun and rewarding. It's a carefully curated journey where creativity and nature exist in perfect harmony, each piece chosen to enhance and respond to the unique character of Houghton Lodge's 15-acre gardens, nestled on the picturesque banks of the idyllic River Test. The concept for Fluvii emerged from a collaborative vision between Houghton Lodge owner Sophie Busk, acclaimed exhibition curator Sarah Rancans, and talented local stone carver Zoë Wilson. "Curating a showcase of sculptures that could speak to one another in this serene, contemplative setting was a captivating idea." asked a neighbour if they had responded to the publicity inviting citizens to respond through questionnaires to the proposals carving up the County of Hampshire. She replied with a quizzical expression and “what consultation are you talking about”?! Given that this issue has been around for a while and the holiday season is upon us why was I was not surprised at the response? For most people as long as the bins get emptied and the pot holes eventually get repaired (again) Local Government Reorganisation is not a matter that gets the heart racing.

This together with the fact that there are two sets of proposals before us, with some Councils also producing their new Planning Guidance requiring a response - it can all get a bit overloaded? Starting in reverse order “The Planning Guidance” – this is a really important document - the District Councils are the Planning Authority – besides other things, it sets out the number of new houses that are going to be built in an area and where they should be located. This is a statutory document that has to be summitted to Government who have made clear that the building of new homes is a key commitment. This document is a bit dense and takes a little reading to get to

the bit you really want to know – how many new houses in my street/village? Town & Parish Councils are invited to respond to this document as are we all. As for the other issue The Local Government Re-organisation of the County of Hampshire – we have two sets of options before us. Our comments are required using a questionnaire. The local District Council also alerted us by hanging a leaflet on the Wheely bin – excellent move! But the feedback I have been getting every time I urge people to respond to this consultation - why two questionnaires? Also, they are both quite different and besides some people having issues with the IT, are quite long – taking one local over half an hour. One wonders sometimes if those people who design these forms have asked their nearest

But readers it will not end after this exercise is over. All the Hampshire Councils are required to submit their proposals to Government in the autumn. They will be analysed and I understand that the views of the public will figure very highly in their deliberations – particularly the number of people who have responded. Then they will come back with their preferred choices and a further round of consultation will take place. So, all is not lost if you were unable or missed this round. Before the new Unitary Councils come into being we have another important change. Next May we will be electing a Mayor for Hampshire and the Island. Followed a year later by the election of the shadow Unitary Councils giving them a year to sort themselves out and coming into being the year after that. It’s vital that this is done in a by-partisan and gentle way so that experienced Councillors and staff don’t ALL slip away. Finally - what did you respond to the question about the names of the new Councils – is it time in the spirit of Alfred the Great to revive Wessex?

AN OSTEOPATHS GUIDE TO SUPPLEMENTS THAT ACTUALLY WORK FOR YOUR MUSCLES, JOINTS AND BONES (AND THOSE THAT DON’T) You can’t help but notice the rising number of supplements and bold claims popping up in our media streams now. Thanks to clever marketing, it can be tempting to think the answer to your symptoms is inside a magic pill or powder. Many don’t live up to the promises, so I am going give you an evidence-based summary on the most popular products and the whole foods to try first.

Collagen for Joint and Tendon Heath:

Claim: Repairs cartilage, reduces pain, speeds recovery Evidence: RCT’s show modest benefit in older adults and for those with osteoarthritis or tendinopathy’s when combined with Vitamin C and rehab exercise. Takeaway: Useful in targeted cases. Look for Type 1 and 3 for tendon, ligaments and muscles, and Type 2 for cartilage. Find good quality organic, unflavoured marine or bovine sources from eg. Hunter and Gather. Can be found combined with Glucosamine and Chondroitin, useful for severe cases of arthritis eg G&G Collagen Extra Rich Food Sources: Bone broth, skin on chicken and fish

Creatine Monohydrate:

Claim: Boosts strength, muscle mass, power and recovery Evidence: RCT’s show strong benefit, especially when paired with resistance training and high-intensity sports. Excellent for older adults at greater risk of muscle loss, and new evidence now supporting use for improving cognition, brain health and prevention of neurological diseases, dementia and depression. Takeaway: risk of water retention or kidney harm unfounded at lower doses of 3-5mg/day. Vegans and vegetarians likely to be low as no natural non-meat sources available. Try good quality unflavoured powders eg MyProtein and Nutriseed Rich food sources: Herring, beef and salmon.

Magnesium:

Claim: sleep, muscle repair, migraines, PMS and stress reduction Evidence: Studies show variable levels of benefit. Most benefit shown in those with clinical deficiencies in older adults and athletes that train hard. Takeaway: Best for people with low dietary magnesium (common in Western diets), those with muscle cramps, high blood pressure, migraines, or PMS. RDA: 310–320 mg/day for women, 400–420 mg/day for men. Supplements not supported by enough evidence:

Green Powders: no evidence, most low grade, poor quality, contain sweeteners, additives, pesticides and heavy metals, expensive. Go whole-foods first to benefit from the fibre and nutrients. A good quality powder maybe beneficial if you’re travelling. Iron: no benefits if not deficient - get tested first. Supplements cannot mimic or replace the benefits of a recommended training or rehab program, a good quality and varied diet, refreshing and consistent sleep patterns, daily movement and plenty of stress-busting activities. The Alresford Show is organised by the Alre The Romsey Show takes place on Saturday 13 September at the Broadlands Estate in Romsey. Investing for children – your options

Investing on behalf of your children or grandchildren could help them graduate debt free, get a foot onto the property ladder, or benefit from an additional income stream. There are several options to consider, including Junior ISAs, junior pensions, certain types of trust and, for older children, Lifetime ISAs. The right solution for you will depend on your family’s needs.

Lifetime ISA For older children, a Lifetime ISA can help provide for their first home or retirement. The account holder must be between 18 and 39 years old and can pay in up to £4,000 a year until age 50. The government will add a 25% bonus.

All the below options come with tax implications for the donor, so it’s important to seek financial advice.

The account holder can withdraw money from age 60 or to buy their first home. If withdrawals are made for any other reason, a 25% charge will apply.

Trust joins national call to ban bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is supporting a new campaign from The Wildlife Trusts calling for a UKwide ban on destructive bottom trawling in offshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs). The campaign, launched during National Marine Week, coincides with a government consultation on banning bottom-towed fishing gear in 41 offshore MPAs - areas at sea designed to protect special habitats or wildlife. Key sites close to our waters include the Offshore Brighton, Offshore Overfalls and Albert Field Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), and the Wight-Barfleur Reef Special Area of Conservation (SAC). While the Solent is home to some of the richest and most diverse marine habitats in the UK - from saltmarsh to seagrass meadows and coastal mudflats to subtidal reefs - many of the species found here depend on healthy habitats far beyond the shoreline. Offshore areas are vital links in the wider marine ecosystem that connects coastal waters with the deeper seas beyond – and are vital parts of this connected ecosystem. The Trust is emphasising the crucial role these offshore MPAs play in supporting marine life that can be found in local inshore waters such as the Solent - one of the UK's most ecologically rich but pressured coastal zones. Emily Stroud, Marine Nature Recovery Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “The Solent’s marine environment is only part of the story. Our seas are a vast,

interconnected network - what happens offshore affects what we see and protect on our shores. From migratory species like European eels, bass, and thresher sharks, to species breeding in the Solent like cuttlefish, marine life needs safe habitats throughout its life cycle, across coastal and offshore waters.

“Even though the Solent has some local protections, the fight doesn’t end at our shores,” adds Emily. “It’s all connected. If we want to see eels returning to our rivers, seagrass thriving in our harbours, and healthy fisheries for future generations, we need to stand up now for the whole marine ecosystem.

“That’s why protecting the seabed in the wider English Channel is crucial - not just for biodiversity but for the health of our fisheries and the long-term recovery of marine ecosystems we all rely on.

“Protecting offshore sites supports local marine life, healthy fisheries, and more resilient ecosystems overall.”

“Marine life doesn’t recognise lines on a map. The species we love and work to protect here rely on healthy habitats throughout the English Channel.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is encouraging the public to back these proposals and demand truly meaningful protection for marine life.

Bottom trawling - where heavy nets are dragged along the seafloor - is widely recognised as one of the most damaging fishing practices. It destroys fragile habitats, disturbs carbon-storing sediments, and undermines the biodiversity MPAs were set up to protect. The Solent already has partial protection through local byelaws that restrict bottom-towed gear in certain habitats, such as seagrass meadows and some mud and sand flats. However, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust stresses that these protections are just one piece of a larger ecological puzzle. Many species seen in the Solent migrate across wide areas of sea and rely on connected, healthy seabed habitats throughout their lifecycles.

COFFEE AND CAKE ON THE GO AT DANEBURY HILL FORT SUPPORTED BY A COUNCIL GRANT

A new mobile coffee and pastry business is proving popular at Danebury Hill Fort, supported by a £750 Business Incentive Grant from Test Valley Borough Council. Amerley’s, run by Amerley Saville, operates from a converted horse box and serves freshly

brewed coffee alongside cakes from Elizabeth Bakes in King Somborne. Amerley is on site five days a week for around six hours a day, offering a warm welcome to visitors at one of the counties most iconic landmarks. She previously worked at Starbucks and purchased a converted horse box to launch her new business. She now has a formal agreement to trade at Danebury, which includes a daily pitch fee and a small share of her revenue. The business regularly promotes opening hours and locations on social media and is attracting bookings for village fetes and school events over the summer. In addition to her regular pitch at Danebury, she also trades at the Weyhill Fairground on Tuesday when Tea Leaves Bookshop is open. Amerley said: “The support from Test Valley Borough Council has made a real difference. I’m really pleased with how things are going and excited to see the business grow. It’s been great to meet so many people at Danebury and I look forward to expanding to new locations in the future.”

The Essential Party Ingredient (Miller and McKaig), run by Ollie McKaig and Flora Wordie, is a specialist catering company offering large-scale, high-quality kitchen and restaurant set ups at client’s venues, and delivering fine dining at special events such as weddings and parties. The funding has supported the business in expanding its operations, investing in new equipment such as a large capacity dishwasher, mobile ovens, and wheeled cages to transport equipment. A local rural business in Test Valley has received a significant boost thanks to a grant of just over £23,000 from the UK Government’s Rural England Prosperity Fund (REPF), administered by Test Valley Borough Council.

Councillor Ian Jeffrey, who represents the MidTest ward, said: “I’m very happy to support the award of the Business Incentive Grant to Amerley’s. I’ve seen her in action at Danebury, it’s one of my dog’s favourite places and I look forward to stopping by again soon to try the coffee. It’s fantastic to see small businesses like this bringing something new to our local landmarks.”
