Art lovers and curious visitors are invited to step inside the creative heart of Hampshire this summer as Hampshire Open Studios returns from 22 – 31 August 2026.

The Meon Valley and surrounding villages provide a wonderfully varied Hampshire Open Studios trail, inviting visitors to explore art and craft in some of Hampshire’s most picturesque locations. From the historic square at Wickham to the village communities of Swanmore, Curdridge and Bishop’s Waltham, this area combines creativity, countryside and independent local character for an inspiring summer day out.

BROUGHTON VILLAGE ART & CRAFT FESTIVAL Now in its sixth year, the Broughton Art & Crafts Festival brings together 70 local artists all exhibiting under one roof. This year we welcome 14 new artists displaying their works for the first time. Open

every day between 22 and 31 August 2026 from 10am to 5pm. As part of the Hampshire Open Studios program, the Festival provides the opportunity of seeing a wide variety of creative works including being able to speak with the artists.

Last year’s event attracted over 3,000 visitors across the 10-day event. Still the single biggest art exhibition in Hampshire under one roof, work featured includes paintings, drawings, cards, photographs, ceramics, jewellery, wood carvings, glass ware, basket weaving and much more. Lots of gift ideas and the chance to meet and talk with the artists.

Now in its 6th year, the exhibition has become one of the most popular Hampshire Open Studios venues, offering visitors not only a wide and eclectic display of art and crafts but also providing refreshments in conjunction with the Broughton Community Shop.

HERITAGE WALKS TO CELEBRATE TRADITIONAL CRAFTS DURING HERITAGE OPEN DAYS 2026 Three local heritage walks exploring traditional rural crafts will take place this September as part of Heritage Open Days 2026 (11-20 Sept), England’s largest festival of history and culture.

The festival’s 2026 theme, “Everyday Histories”, explores the trades, skills and routines that shaped daily life in communities. Inspired by the old rhyme “the butcher, the baker, the candlestick maker,” thousands of free events will invite people to discover the people and professions that once formed the backbone of everyday life. As part of the programme, local walking guide Rural Strides will lead three walks focusing on traditional crafts that were once essential to rural communities: flint knapping, stonemasonry and wheelwrighting.

The flint knapping walk explores what is widely regarded as humanity’s oldest craft. Long before the butcher, baker or candlestick maker, early people relied on flint tools to hunt, prepare food and survive.

Today, flint remains one of the defining building materials of the local landscape.

Two further walks will visit a working stonemason and a traditional wheelwright. Both trades were once common features of village life.

Wheelwrights kept farms and transport moving by building and repairing wooden wheels for carts and wagons, while stonemasons shaped the stone used in churches, houses and monuments that still define the character of the countryside today.

While stonemasonry is enjoying renewed interest through conservation and restoration projects, traditional wheelwrights have become increasingly rare, with only a small number still practising across the country.

Rural Strides founder Malinka van der Gaauw says that “by meeting craftspeople in their workshops and learning about their skills first-hand, these walks offer a chance to connect with the working traditions that helped shape everyday life in the past”. FIRE – ‘Financial Independence, Retire Early’ – is a movement where people save aggressively with the aim of retiring decades earlier than traditional retirement age. It aims to achieve financial independence, defined as having an income sufficient for your basic needs and comforts from a source other than paid employment1.

How does FIRE work?

Per the FIRE method, you need to save up around 25 times your annual expenses to achieve financial independence. So, if you expect to spend £20,000 a year when you retire, you’d need to save around £500,000. This calculation assumes you withdraw 4% of your savings each year in retirement.

What are the benefits of the FIRE method?

Working towards financial independence could help improve your financial wellbeing. Saving for your future is also wise, as you might not be able to entirely rely on the state to fund your desired retirement.

Investing can help mitigate the impact of inflation on your savings, giving your money the opportunity to grow over time.

What are the potential pitfalls?

Your savings may not be sufficient to fund a potentially extremely long retirement. A 40-year-old UK woman has an average life expectancy of 87 and a one in ten chance of living to 100², so your money might need to last another 50 years or more.

The 4% withdrawal rule was developed using U.S. market performance data from 1926 to 1992 and targeted at retirees with a 30-year time horizon. For a UK investor in the 2020s, with a 50-year time horizon, there’s a real risk that relying on the 4% rule results in savings being depleted too quickly.

As you can’t access money inside personal pensions until age 55 (rising to 57 from April 2028), you would need to have saved a large chunk of money in Individual Savings Accounts (ISAs), which don’t have quite as many perks as pensions.

Next steps If retiring early is important to you, you may wish to speak to a wealth manager. By understanding your financial circumstances, they can determine whether your target retirement date is achievable.

The KES Group launch marked by time capsule to be opened at 500th anniversary of King Edward VI School, Southampton in 2053

n June, King Edward VI School announced the launch of The KES Group, bringing together King Edward VI School in Southampton, KES Preparatory School in Romsey and Prince’s Mead in Winchester, reinforcing KES as the home of exceptional independent education for children across Hampshire aged 2–18.

At the heart of the Group sits King Edward VI School, recently named among the Top 10 schools in the South West in The Sunday Times Parent Power 2026 league tables, based on exceptional A Level and GCSE results.

The school was also recognised as a Finalist for Regional Independent School of the Year (South) in the 2025 Independent Schools of the Year Awards, a recognition that reflects not only its academic strength, but the clarity of its recently redefined values and Boundless Futures vision, which now unite King Edward VI School, KES Preparatory School and Prince’s Mead in a shared sense of purpose.

On Thursday 25th June 2026, that connection was brought to life through the creation of a time capsule, holding a moment in their shared story while looking ahead to the future they are shaping together.

Placed in the grounds at Hill Lane, the capsule will be opened in June 2053, when King Edward VI School celebrates its 500th anniversary. It contains a snapshot of life across the Group in 2026 and the ambitions that will shape the years to come.

The initiative brought together contributions from across the KES community, both past and present. Letters from the Heads of each school sit alongside messages from pupil leaders and pupil voice groups, who wrote directly to future generations, sharing their

hopes for the schools and the opportunities they believe lie ahead. Old Edwardians (the school’s alumni) also contributed, ensuring the capsule reflects not only where the schools are today, but the strength of the community that has shaped them over generations.

Neal Parker, Head of King Edward VI School, said: “As ever, our children are at the heart of every decision we make, so it felt only right to mark this moment in a way that amplifies their voices and reflects their experiences. The time capsule brings together perspectives from across our communities, from age 2 through to 18, capturing what school life means to them today and the hopes they hold for the future. When it is opened in 2053, it will speak directly to future pupils about the moment our schools came together with a shared purpose.”

As the oldest school in Southampton, King Edward VI School looks ahead to 500 years of educating children across Hampshire, marking a defining moment in its story.

Swanmore village fete

A Huge Thank You!

As you will know, sadly the Meon Valley Lions Club had to cancel the Swanmore Village Fete on 11th July due to the amber heat warning issued by the NHS. The decision wasn’t made lightly, considering the months it took in the planning, but of course, the safety of the public and our members was paramount. We would like to thank the numerous people who showed their support for our decision.

Despite this, the valiant effort of our members raised nearly £2,000 in raffle ticket sales that can go towards the money the Club uses to help local people. The lucky winners have been contacted but if you need clarification, please check our website for the winning numbers. The Club would like to make special mention of Lions Hilary White and Dinah Warr in making the raffle such a success.

This year’s Bishop’s Waltham Summer Fayre, in the middle of June, was the biggest and best we have ever run and it’s all thanks to you. We had More Stalls, More Classic Cars, More Dogs in the Dog Show and we made more money than ever for charity. Thanks to everyone who was there as a helper or came along to enjoy the summer sun, music and entertainment, we raised around £12,000 which will help us to support local charities, individuals and groups, plus national and international causes.

Spreading a little joy

Durley C of E Primary School outdoor areas makeover

The Club have worked with the fabulous Disabled Sailors Association to fund four trips, over two weekends, on the specially adapted Catamaran, the ‘Scott Bader’. Fourteen children from the Rainbow Centre, together with their carers, set sail from Port Solent for a fantastic 2-hour experience on the water.

This was a great, unique experience for these children and thoroughly enjoyed by them and their carers. The weather and sea conditions were great, which made the trips even more enjoyable; the Club members who went to see them off, on both weekends, would have loved to go out with them. A huge thank you to everyone involved in a fantastic event.

Earlier in the year, Bishop’s Waltham Rotary were made aware that Durley C of E Primary School needed both financial assistance to purchase new outdoor play equipment, plus hands on help updating their children’s outside area. The area was in need of general tidying up plus repainting existing equipment due to being affected by significant flooding Outdoor area at Durley School and desperately needed updating. So, on a sunny Saturday morning, a team from Bishop’s Waltham Rotary Club arrived, equipped with new outdoor equipment to be assembled plus paint and brushes etc ready to get to work.

After a hard day’s work, the outside areas have taken on a whole new life, and reports from the school so far are that the children are over the moon with their much brighter and more interactive space.

THE ROMSEY SHOW

The Romsey Show is a traditional country show held on the 12 September 2026. From 8pm to 5.30pm.

The show is organised by The Romsey Agricultural and Horse Show Society and held on the magnificent and historic Broadlands Park, Romsey. With a regular annual attendance of around 20,000, the Show welcomes people of all ages and interests, from families to local businesses. There is something for everyone.

Potter pasta with bacon and spring onions This recipe is from the Book & Bucket Cheese Company website by Heather Brown from Dorset Foodie Feed. It features their Porter, a kind of hybrid cross between a soft cream cheese and a curd.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

200G POTTER 4 RASHERS STREAKY BACON 1 CLOVE OF GARLIC, CHOPPED HANDFUL OF BUTTON MUSHROOMS, SLICED 5 SPRING ONIONS, SLICED 1 TBSP BUTTER A LITTLE OIL LINGUINE (OR ANY PASTA)

Cook your pasta in salted water following packet instructions until done and when draining, reserve some of the pasta water. Pop the drained pasta back into its cooking pot. Whilst the pasta is cooking, fry off the streaky bacon in a pan with a little oil so that the bacon is crisp.

Keep the bacon on a plate for later.In the same bacon-y pan, in that lovely bacon fat, add the butter and the mushrooms. Once frying and the mushrooms beginning to change colour, add the garlic and spring onions. Season well with pepper and salt if needed (although the bacon will have already added saltiness here).

Once the mushrooms have turned a lovely golden brown, cut up the crispy bacon and add to the pan and then add in the Potter and stir in so that it melts. Keep this mixture on a low heat until the pasta is ready.

Put the pot with the pasta back onto a gentle heat and add in a little of the pasta water followed by the cheesy Potter sauce and mix well until the pasta is glossy with sauce. You can add more pasta water if you need to until you get the desired sauce consistency.

Serve and enjoy!

The first-ever EatSTreat event transformed Bishop’s Waltham High Street into a vibrant celebration of local food, drink and community spirit on Thursday 18 June. The evening food fayre, created to showcase local producers, suppliers and food businesses, attracted hundreds of residents and visitors from surrounding villages who came together to enjoy a unique experience in the heart of the town. With the High Street closed to traffic from 6pm to 8.30pm, 24 traders lined the street offering an impressive range of locally produced goods. Visitors were able to sample and purchase handmade chocolates, home-grown flowers, preserves, baked goods, imported Caribbean sauces, honey and beeswax products, locally roasted coffee, cider and beer. A variety of food trucks added to the festive atmosphere, serving everything from crêpes and Greek yiros to Mediterranean-style tapas and gourmet burgers.

The town’s established food businesses also embraced the occasion.

Grover Butchers, Any Fish, Hylands Fruit and Vegetable Shop and Stainers Bakery all extended their opening hours and offered special tasters throughout the evening. Local cafés and bars welcomed visitors, while non-food retailers opened late, giving attendees the opportunity to experience the full range of what Bishop’s Waltham High Street has to offer.

Blessed with warm sunshine, the event drew large crowds and created a lively and welcoming atmosphere. Entertainment was provided throughout the evening by the Swanmore Wind Band and groups of folk musicians, adding to the sense of celebration and community.

EatSTreat was conceived, planned and delivered by the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team, a voluntary group dedicated to supporting the town and helping the High Street thrive as both a commercial centre and a social hub.

Robin Shepherd, Chairperson of the Bishop’s Waltham Town Team, said: "We received so many positive comments about the event. Without exception, the stallholders and food outlets that were open said it was a fantastic evening for them. We were really heartened to have so many attendees come up to us unsolicited on the night to tell us what a great time they had and to thank us for putting it on."

The success of the inaugural EatSTreat event has demonstrated the strength of Bishop’s Waltham’s local food and drink community and highlighted the important role the High Street continues to play in bringing people together.

Hope for Britain's fastestdeclining mammal

W

ater voles thriving at St Clair's Meadow Nature Reserve, survey finds Water voles are Britain's fastest-declining mammal. Once widespread across the country's rivers, streams and wetlands, they have declined due to habitat loss, pollution, agricultural pressures and predation by non-native American mink. National estimates now stand at between 58,000 and 186,000 individuals, making every stronghold for the species increasingly important.

The survey, carried out by Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust with the River Meon Conservation Volunteers, recorded extensive evidence of water vole activity including feeding stations and remains, burrow entrances and latrines.

The findings suggest a healthy and active population during the breeding season and are thought to be among the strongest recorded at the reserve using a new monitoring method.

Andy Reeves, Reserves Officer (Central Rivers & Downs) at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: "What makes a survey like this so exciting is seeing just how much evidence water voles leave as they go about their daily lives.

“Water voles can be difficult to spot, so we look for clues. We found feeding stations with neatly cut stems clipped at the distinctive 45-degree angle that water voles are known for, plus active burrows and characteristic latrines along the riverbank. Some of their green, tic-tac-shaped droppings have been flattened into what we call 'trampled latrines', where water voles stamp them down to scent mark their territory during the breeding season. Finding so many of these signs shows that the population is feeding, breeding and thriving here at St Clair’s Meadow Nature Reserve."

Rather than surveying solely from the riverbank, trained staff and volunteers now search the vegetation for field signs from within the river itself, following water safety procedures and wearing appropriate clothing and safety equipment. This has proved highly successful, enabling a much more detailed assessment of water vole activity and has significantly increased the number of sightings.

The results reflect a wider encouraging picture emerging along the River Meon. Survey data collected by the South Downs National Park Authority (SDNPA) and SDNPA volunteers in 2025 recorded water voles at 32 of the 35 sites surveyed, with evidence of breeding at 22 locations.

The SDNPA results contribute to emerging evidence of a slight recovery in water vole populations at a national level. However, water voles remain the UK’s fastest declining mammal, and long-term continued conservation effort is essential.

A key reason for the species' recovery on the River Meon has been the Meon Valley Water Vole Project.

Launched in 2013 by the SDNPA and the Meon Valley Partnership, with support from Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, the project saw more than 2,800 water voles released into the river system.

It is the UK's largest water vole reintroduction within a river valley and the only project of its kind to have taken place in Hampshire.

The River Meon is one of the most important strongholds for water voles in Hampshire. Its clear chalk stream waters, well-vegetated banks and good habitat conditions provide an ideal home for the species. In addition to the reintroduction, years of partnership work to improve river habitats, reduce predation pressures, and support species have helped create the conditions for populations to recover and thrive.

Andy adds: “Water voles may be small, but they play a surprisingly important role in a healthy river ecosystem. Their feeding and burrowing behaviour helps shape riverbank habitats, benefiting a range of other species and helping maintain the rich wildlife that helps makes chalk streams like the Meon so special.”

Monitoring work is made possible through a longstanding partnership involving Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, the South Downs National Park Authority and dedicated volunteers. The River Meon is believed to be one of the most intensively surveyed rivers for water voles in the country, providing valuable data on the species' status and recovery and contributing to national monitoring efforts.

Andy said: "Monitoring is absolutely essential.

Conservation doesn't stop once a species has been reintroduced. We need to keep tracking populations to make sure they remain healthy and to identify any threats early.

“I'd like to thank the River Meon Conservation Volunteers, whose efforts collecting data feed into national monitoring programmes and help us understand how water voles are faring not just here on the River Meon, but across the country."

The survey is thought to be one of the most successful at the site to date using a new monitoring method, which records detailed field signs directly into a national monitoring programme. The National Water Vole Monitoring Programme helps conservationists build a better understanding of how the species is faring nationally.

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust plays a leading role in water vole recovery, not only regionally but also nationally. The Trust is co-author of the National Water Vole Database and Mapping Project, which collates records from across the UK which helps guide conservation action to the areas where it is needed most.

Visitors can also help protect water voles and other wildlife by staying on paths and keeping dogs on leads when near riverbanks to minimise disturbance to wildlife and sensitive habitats.

The success at St Clair's Meadow reflects Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust's aim to bring more land into nature recovery. Alongside managing existing wildlife-rich sites, the Trust is restoring habitat at nearby Court House Meadows. This newly acquired land, which has the River Meon running through it, is creating more space for nature and supporting the long-term recovery of water voles and other species across the wider landscape.

The NGS is now gearing up to 2027, when we celebrate our centenary.

How different life and gardens were then. The first 600 gardens opened in May 1927 and the cost per head was ‘a shilling’. They raised a total of £8,191.00, which went to help support the District Nurses. Currently we open 3,500 gardens, nationwide and the the admission fee to visit a garden is anywhere between £4.50 and £10.00, depending on the garden.

In 2025 the National Garden Scheme raised a staggering £3.8m - it would be great to make it £4m leading into our centenary year.

As well as donating to several well known charities, the National Garden Scheme also supports many other Nursing, Health and Caring projects - the latest one being a donation of £37,828.00 to the rooftop critical care unit garden at Kings College Hospital, London. This donation was used to support the planting. This is the first rooftop critical care unit garden in the world.

At the very moment Nigel Farage was staging his resignation drama, I was in Parliament with my Lib Dem colleague Helen Morgan MP, scrutinising the Health Bill line by line. It's not glamorous work, it takes weeks, but it's where laws are improved. We were pushing for action on NHS dentistry, faster GP appointments, improved social care, and making sure NHS contracts support British industry while better protecting patients' data.

As the Bill reaches its final stages, we'll be voting on changes that could improve NHS services for millions of people. That's the kind of politics I came into Parliament to do. I'm calling for anyone at risk from an abusive partner to be told if that person has been found guilty of deliberately harming an animal, as this knowledge could help keep them safe. I'm also calling for anyone who has deliberately harmed an animal to be banned from owning pets in the future. By spotting these warning signs earlier, we can do more to protect women, children and animals from future harm. Although I spend three or four days a week in Parliament, my favourite part of the job is being here in Winchester and the surrounding villages. During the summer, I get more time in the constituency to meet local people and hear about the issues that matter most to them.

I've already lost count of the number of village fetes and summer fairs I've been to this year. They're a great chance to catch up with residents, meet local groups and enjoy everything our communities have to offer.

And despite all my years as a vet and now as an MP, I think judging the dog shows might still be the hardest job of all. After all, everyone thinks they own the best dog in the world - and of course, they do!

November brings Bleak Expectations by Mark Evans, best described as Dickens with a dash of Monty Python. This hilarious comic caper features contemptible villains, crazy exploits, heroes, heroines, preposterous names and of course a happy ending.

The Lion In Winter by James Goldman looks at a family locked in a free-for-all of competing ambitions. The family is that of Henry II King of England, his formidable wife Eleanor of Aquitaine and his three sons.

Dramatic in action, sometimes comedic in tone, rivalry, adultery and scheming make for a dynamic meeting in Christmas 1183.

Copenhagen by Michael Frayn takes a step back in time from the recent box office hit Oppenheimer. Two men could build the atomic bomb or choose not to. Based on real events and a meeting between two friends in 1941, this captivating play explores what might have taken place. But the truth is far from certain and recollections may vary.

Finally, I'd like to thank Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service for their rapid and effective response after the recent fire in the city centre. Some of the shops and buildings in the part of Winchester affected are as much as 900 years old, which makes it even more challenging if a fire takes hold.

Nicolas’ parents are concerned. He has changed from a happy, thriving young man to one who is listless, lying and locking himself away.

This situation is at the heart of Florian Zeller’s The Son, translated by Chritopher Hampton. There are no easy answers, and love is not always enough.

ROWANS HOSPICE’S SHINING STARS WALK RETURNS FOR AN UNFORGETTABLE NIGHT OF REMEMBRANCE, COMMUNITY AND FUNDRAISING Rowans Hospice is inviting people from across the local community to come together for the return of its much-loved Shining Stars Walk on Saturday, 26 September 2026. Whether walking in memory of a loved one, supporting local hospice care, or simply enjoying a unique evening with family and friends, participants can look forward to a spectacular night of reflection, celebration and community spirit.

The flagship fundraising event offers adults and children the choice of a 4-mile or 8-mile route along Portsmouth's iconic waterfront.

Starting at 7pm from HMS Temeraire, walkers will pass some of the city’s most recognisable landmarks, including the Spinnaker Tower and HMS Warrior, beautifully illuminated against the night sky.

While remembrance remains at the heart of the event, Shining Stars Walk is open to everyone. Participants can walk to honour someone special, show their support for Rowans Hospice, or simply be part of one of the region’s most inspiring community events, all while helping to raise vital funds for local hospice care. New for 2026, participants can dedicate a personalised star, projected onto one of Portsmouth's most iconic buildings, creating a striking tribute to someone special and an unforgettable part of the evening.

Entertainment before and during the walk will add to the atmosphere, while Portsmouth Historic Dockyard will once again open HMS Warrior exclusively for participants to light a candle, pause for reflection and remember loved ones.

Yvonne Penny-Filewod, Head of Fundraising and Marketing at Rowans Hospice, said: "We can't wait to welcome our community for another unforgettable Shining Stars Walk. Whether people are taking part in memory of a loved one, supporting the Hospice, or simply enjoying a fantastic evening with family and friends, there is a place for everyone. We're looking forward to welcoming both familiar faces and first-time participants to what promises to be our biggest and brightest event yet."

This year, Rowans Hospice hopes to raise £70,000 through sponsorship and fundraising to help provide specialist care and support for people living with life-limiting illnesses and their families across South East Hampshire.

Tickets are available at £27 for adults and £12 for children, with under-3s attending free. Registration includes a limited-edition t-shirt, refreshments and a finisher's medal. Online registration closes on Tuesday, 22 September, with tickets also available on the night on 26 September.

QUESTIONS TO ASK BEFORE YOU CHOOSE CARE AT HOME Choosing care at home is about more than price. It's about trust, consistency, and finding a service that really suits your family's needs.

A few well-chosen questions can tell you a lot.

How are care professionals paid?

Ask whether care professionals are paid by the visit or by the shift, and what that means in practice. It's also worth asking how travel time, handovers, and gaps between calls are handled. That gives you a better sense of how stable the service is likely to be.

How are staff checked?

Staff vetting is a sensible place to begin. Ask what checks are done before anyone starts work. A good provider should be able to explain whether care professionals have DBS checks, references, right-towork checks, and the right training before they visit. You can also ask how often training is refreshed, whether staff are supervised, and who to speak to if you have concerns.

What about costs and funding?

Money matters too, especially when you're planning care at home.

• Attendance Allowance: £76.70 a week at the lower rate, or £114.60 a week at the higher rate. It is not means-tested.

• England council funding: if the person has savings or capital above £23,250, they will usually need to self-fund. Between £14,250 and £23,250, the council may help on a sliding scale. Below £14,250, capital is not counted.

It's also sensible to ask for every cost in writing before you agree to anything, including mileage, weekend or bank holiday rates, doubleup visits, and cancellation charges.

What do other families say?

Independent reviews, a clear CQC rating, and a provider that listens to feedback are all good signs. It's worth asking how they gather feedback from clients and families, and what they do with it.

Will I see the same people?

Another useful question is whether the same care professionals will visit regularly. Familiar faces can make a big difference, especially for someone who values routine. It can also help to ask how absences are covered, so you know what happens if a regular member of staff is off sick or on holiday.

Could NHS Continuing Healthcare apply?

If someone's needs are more health-led, it may also be worth asking whether NHS Continuing Healthcare (CHC) might apply. The answer depends on the individual case, but it's worth raising early.

Good care providers should welcome questions. Clear answers, given in writing, are often a good sign that you're dealing with a service that takes quality seriously.

(Extract from my memoirs, during the year I spent living in a caravan) My husband, Paul, was champing at the bit to make his favourite tipple - mead. Personally, I’m not a fan. Honey has this taste. It doesn’t matter what particular variety: lavender, acacia blossom or heather – it tastes of honey. And it does something right at the back of the roof of my mouth, just as it reaches my throat. My body segues through surprise, suspicion and revulsion; ‘Oh? Wossat? Yuk!’.

Anyway, Paul had assembled plastic barrels and glass demijohns and the sort of enormous saucepan and ladle that you see in the orphanage scene in Oliver Twist. Just to clarify, it’s the version with Oliver Reed as Bill Sykes, dripping with sex appeal (the subject of an early crush).

I’ll mention here that I’m allergic to bee stings. One childhood summer, I was staying with a friend and trod on a hapless bee. My foot swelled, skin growing hot with the unhealthy sheen of being stretched too tightly. That night the allergic reaction triggered an asthma episode. Pre-diagnosis: no meds. Wheezing loudly, with a fat, shiny foot, I was the biggest nuisance to the sweetly caring mother of my friend. She slathered my foot in calamine lotion, to no effect save staining the sheets.

Many years of slim-footedness and bee-avoidance later, back at the caravan, Paul was outside dealing with the honey; decanting and weighing. The bees lived in a settlement of hives about thirty yards from the caravan.

We couldn’t see them, but their daytime hum was like a distant road with constant but light traffic.

We didn’t bother the bees and they politely ignored us. There was a mutual respect. At least, I had a huge respect for them because I’d seen that horror film The Swarm at a very impressionable age. I didn’t want to find myself covered in them and have to sit in a fridge until they went to sleep – like in the film. In any event, I have no idea whether they had respect for me. I doubt it. I just wasn’t a flower and at no time did I try to get into their hive to steal their food, so they left me alone.

Armed with my enormous respect (for ‘respect’, read ‘fear’), I elected to be inside the awning of the caravan. I was in charge of sterilising the equipment and manning the gas burner with its giant saucepan of water, into which I was going to pour the weighed honey.

Like a modern-day alchemist, I was going to produce the nectar of the

monks. The first recorded alcoholic drink. We’d looked it all up on BBC Good Food. I love BBC Good Food. BBC Good Food made everything look easy. It was going to be a piece of cake, BBC Good Food practically said so.

There I was in the awning, all zipped up and bee-free. Paul was outside communing with the bees. They, having smelt the honey that had been so unceremoniously stolen from them, had come to investigate. They buzzed around him, coming in for a closer look, hovering about. Then presumably they decided that a sample might be in order and one or two landed on the bucket.

It must have been the equivalent shout-out of, “Yes chaps, it’s definitely ours,” as Paul was then inundated with their little bodies, flying in and landing. I’ve no idea what they thought they were going to do. Take it all back, one tiny bee mouthful at a time? Entirely feasible, given the amount of hard work and diligence it had taken them to manufacture the stuff in the first place.

Meanwhile, back in the awning…

I couldn’t work out what the little noises were. Sounded like the pitterpatter of raindrops, but couldn’t be – the sun was beating down on the awning, heat radiating through the canvas.

No, it wasn’t rain. It was the bees. They were batting against the canvas, first one or two, then more and more. The bees must have got a whiff of the honey that I was adding to the now-boiled water and they were making it their mission to come and get that too.

Feverishly, I was checking the door was completely zipped up. I couldn’t see anywhere they might get in, and relaxed a bit.

But for all they look so sweet and busy on these natural history programmes, doing their little waggle dance and flying around with pollen laden trousers, the little bees are cunning and devious little Bs. They circled the caravan and found they could get in under the skirt of the awning where there were gaps caused by the uneven grass. In just a few minutes I had my own contingent of nosy insects buzzing around me.

I fled to the caravan and locked myself in, shouting for Paul in a panic.

“They’re here! They’ve brought their friends. Millions of the little wotsits looking at me with accusing feelers.”
