A NEW PLACE TO GATHER AT WELBORNE
At Welborne, creating a sense of community has always been about more than building homes. It is about shaping places where people naturally come together, from the very beginning.
This vision is now being brought further to life with the opening of The Corner Cafe, a welcoming space overlooking Welborne Park and the much-loved playground. Already a popular spot for families, walkers and visitors, the park has quickly become a place where everyday moments unfold. Now, there is somewhere to pause and enjoy them for a little longer.
Perfectly positioned at the edge of the park and just a short walk from Dashwood, Welborne’s ancient woodland, The Corner Cafe is an ideal stop after walking the dog, riding your bike, or while visiting Welborne’s Welcome Centre and show homes. It’s the perfect place to take a moment, relax with family and friends, and enjoy the village environment.

Designed by the Welborne team alongside Ben Pentreath OBE and his studio, the cafe has been thoughtfully created to feel in keeping with the garden village setting and
NATIONAL OPEN GARDEN SCHEME

I was recently introduced to a company called Soil Smiths, they are ’Soil Scientists’, who are based in North Hampshire. They are a relatively new company having worked mainly with farmers and flower growers, with a great deal of success. They have now turned their attention to us gardeners as well. Several NGS gardeners in Hampshire have invited Soil Smiths to their open gardens, giving the visitor the opportunity to have their compost analysed - free of charge. Simply bring along a small sample of your compost and have it tested under a microscope - you can then see all the nematodes, testate amoeba and fungi (or not) within your compost. I can assure you that it is absolutely fascinating to be able to see what is going on in a very small sample - all invisible to the naked eye.

welcoming to all who visit and live at Welborne. While the Village Centre is being delivered, the cafe provides a focal point for residents, their visitors and the wider community. It represents the cornerstone of Welborne’s approach: delivering community infrastructure and bringing people together from the outset. It is these shared spaces, and the connections they foster, that shape the character of a place.
Tasty treats

The cafe team is looking forward to a busy summer season. The menu reflects a spirit of quality and simplicity, with fresh sandwiches, seasonal salads, pastries, smoothies and barista coffee, alongside deli-style dishes to enjoy in or take away. A small pantry space will also offer local produce and seasonal treats, adding to the café’s everyday appeal.
The Corner Cafe is open to everyone With Welborne’s first residents settled in and making the community a lived reality, the cafe and park are already welcoming visitors from across the wider area. It is the perfect place to meet friends, spend time with family while the little ones enjoy the beautifully designed playground, catch up on a few work emails, or simply sit back for a moment of pause - whether you live here or are discovering Welborne for the first time.
The Corner Cafe is set to become part of the rhythm of life at Welborne. Why not plan your visit, take a walk through Dashwood, and stop by for a coffee overlooking the park!
Where do you have the opportunity to meet these scientists?

How advice can boost your financial wellbeing
Money worries are common and can affect people from all walks of life. Here are some of the ways taking financial advice can help.
Money and wellbeing are intertwined
According to a survey by the Money and Mental Health Policy Institute, almost four in ten (39%) respondents with mental health problems said their financial situation had made their mental health problems worse1
With this in mind, improving your financial wellbeing could boost your finances as well as your overall satisfaction with life.
Four ways financial advice can help
1. Feeling in control
Feeling in control of your finances means having a firm grasp of your incomings and outgoings, and a solid budgeting and savings plan. A wealth manager can help you become more aware of your monthly spending and find ways to spend less and save more. They’ll also look at the best ways to tackle any debts you may have.
2. Capacity to absorb a financial shock
You might be saving regularly, but would your finances hold up in an emergency? Having around six months’ worth of essential expenditure in an easy-access savings account could help you pay for unexpected repairs to your home or cover you during a period of unemployment.
Serious illness or death could cause a major hit to your finances. Protection products – such as life insurance, critical illness and income protection – could provide vital financial support, but they vary enormously, so it’s crucial to seek advice.
3. On track to meet goals
Whatever your goals, a wealth manager can help you determine whether you are on track and, if not, how to try to make up the shortfall. They can also help you save and invest tax efficiently so that more of your money goes towards your future.
4. Flexibility to make choices
A wealth manager can build a picture of your life and give a projection of how long your money could last. Understanding the impact of your financial decisions can help provide clarity and confidence about your finances, both today and well into the future.
Next steps
Money worries aren’t easy to tackle on your own. We can develop a financial roadmap that sets out where you are now, where you want to be, and how to get there.

St Swithun’s Prep School to introduce a Nursery
As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence and to meeting the evolving needs of our community, we are delighted to share the news that St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester is planning to introduce a new on-site nursery, supporting children from their very first steps on their educational journey and extending our early years provision for families with young children.
St Swithun’s Nursery and Preschool will offer high quality, co educational provision for children from nine months to four years, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment during the most formative early years of life. By placing emotional wellbeing, encouragement and exploration at the heart of our approach, we aim to give every child the confidence to begin, to try and to grow.
The nursery will sit alongside our existing preschool, which will also move to 50 week, all year round provision, whilst retaining the flexibility to be term-time only for those who wish. This will create a consistent and supportive early years pathway.

At the heart of our nursery and preschool provision is a strong focus on children’s emotional wellbeing, curiosity and growing independence, grounded in the school’s core values of Caritas, Humilitas and Sinceritas. We believe that the earliest years are vital in shaping children’s confidence and a love of learning. Our aim is that every child feels known and valued, with the freedom to explore and learn through play.
For our babies and younger toddlers, emotional security and strong relationships

will be paramount. Calm, welcoming spaces and responsive care will allow children to settle at their own pace, building trust and confidence through warm interactions, predictable routines and sensory rich play. As children grow, learning experiences will evolve to support greater independence and social awareness, while always maintaining play and wellbeing at their core.

An outdoor learning facility is also planned as part of the nursery development, reflecting our belief in the importance of outdoor play and exploration in early childhood, where curiosity is sparked and learning happens naturally through doing. Further details will be confirmed as plans progress.
The preschool year will provide a carefully supported bridge into prep school life, helping children develop independence and confidence while preserving the creativity, joy and curiosity that define an outstanding early
years education. From Reception onwards, St Swithun’s will remain a girls only school, with the nursery and preschool providing a strong foundation.
The nursery is expected to open between September 2026 and January 2027, subject to final approvals. Current plans are that places for children aged 2–3 years would open no earlier than 7 September, and places for children aged 9 months to 2 years no earlier than the autumn half term.
As part of this development, the school is currently reviewing staffing and facilities, and recruitment for a Nursery Manager is underway.
We look forward to sharing further updates as this exciting project progresses and to welcoming families into the next chapter of St Swithun’s early years provision.

Trust members and supporters help secure new sanctuary site for nature
Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is pleased to announce the acquisition of Court House Meadows, a water meadow alongside the River Meon, which will be protected as a sanctuary site for wildlife.
Water meadows are a threatened habitat across Hampshire and the UK, and they form an important part of the county’s natural heritage. The presence of the River Meon, a rare chalk stream, running through the site makes Court House Meadows particularly ecologically valuable.
The 8.66-hectare (21.4-acre) site, just south of West Meon village, will be managed to support wildlife, restore the river’s natural floodplain, and enhance one of Hampshire’s rarest chalk stream habitats.
Court House Meadows will offer a haven for mammals including endangered water voles, overwintering wading birds such as snipe, amphibians including newts, insects including dragonflies, and aquatic life such as brown trout. The open grassland and river corridor will also support a diversity of meadow plants.
As a sanctuary site, Court House Meadows will not be open to the public, ensuring that the sensitive habitats and vulnerable species can thrive with minimal disturbance. The Trust will protect these habitats by implementing conservation measures and habitat management to safeguard wildlife and restore the river and floodplain.
John Durnell, Senior Director of Operations at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: “Securing Court House Meadows is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to protect an ecologically important site in the heart of the Meon Valley. With restoration work possible on both the land and the River Meon, this rare chalk stream site will be able to flourish, help restore the

floodplain to a more natural state, strengthen wildlife connections in the surrounding area, and create a space where species can thrive again.
“We can give space back to species including our much-loved water vole, whose habitat has dramatically declined, which makes sites like this so crucial for their survival. I am deeply grateful to our partners and Trust members and supporters who made this possible. Their support is directly contributing to this land functioning more naturally for wildlife.”
Chalk streams are among the rarest habitats in the world, with only around 200 globally, 80% of which are found in southern England. The River Meon is described as one of Hampshire’s “Cinderella chalk streams” and is often cited as the best example of a chalk stream in the country. Protecting Court House Meadows will help safeguard the river’s clear waters, rich biodiversity, and natural floodplain function.

By restoring the floodplain, the site will enhance habitats for wildlife, slow and store water, reduce flood risk downstream for local communities and improve water quality.
The acquisition has been made possible thanks to generous support from the South Downs National Park Authority and the South Downs Trust alongside pledges from local supporters, and an overwhelming response to the Trust’s public fundraising appeal which received more than 1,000 donations from Trust members and the local community.
The new site strengthens the Trust’s landholding in the Meon Valley, contributing to a more resilient landscape by adding to a network of other nearby Trust-owned sites, including St Clair’s Meadow, Bere Copse, Shutts Copse and Chappetts Copse Nature Reserves.

MEON VOICES CLOSES SPRING TERM WITH STRONG COMMUNITY SPIRIT

The Meon Voices Choir ended its Spring term on a high note this month, with almost all 58 members attending the choir’s AGM and traditional American Supper on Monday 11 May.
Members voted unanimously to reappoint Jane Vose as Chair, alongside Wendy Daud as Treasurer and Tracey Tudball as Secretary. Choir Leader Emma Dean joined the officers in presenting annual reports reflecting on another successful year for the choir, which continues to attract audiences from across Bishop’s Waltham and the surrounding villages.
Both Emma Dean and Jane Vose paid tribute to former Chair Phil Coundley, who died suddenly in early April. Phil was remembered for the enormous contribution he made to the choir during his years as Chair, including helping to guide the group through challenging periods and supporting its continued growth and community focus. Meon Voices is now looking ahead to its Christmas Concert, which will take place on Saturday 12 December 2026 at St Peter's Church.
Rehearsals for the new term begin on Monday 14 September at the United Free Church in Bishop’s Waltham. Meon Voices continues to welcome supporters from Bishop’s Waltham and the surrounding villages, bringing people together through a shared love of music and community.

THE WEST MEON MUSIC FESTIVAL 2026
From Mediaeval to Modern
With music spanning almost seven centuries – from Guillaume Dufay (born in 1397) to György Kurtág, who celebrated his 100th birthday earlier this year – there will be works to appeal to everyone at this year’s West Meon Music Festival from 10th to 13th September. Festival founders, The Primrose Piano Quartet, will be joined by guest musicians to perform some of the best-loved works in the repertoire including Robert Schumann’s Piano Quintet and Franz Schubert’s last great chamber work, the much-loved String Quintet in C. A highlight will be Schubert’s Winterreise song cycle with internationally-renowned tenor, James Gilchrist. While most of the festival’s eight concerts are held at the Church of St John
the Evangelist in West Meon the neighbouring churches of All Saints in East Meon and Our Lady in Warnford also play host. On the afternoon of Saturday 12th September “Flutes and Frets” – Beth Stone and Daniel Murphy – take a journey through 400 years of music from Dufay to Couperin at Warnford, while the Sunday morning concert at East Meon will find The Eden Stell Guitar Duo spanning 300 years from Rameau to Ida Presti.
The festival also includes a piano recital by Amiri Harewood, Classic FM Rising Star and Grand Prize winner of the Young Classical Artist Trust, followed by a late-night musical journey to Hungary, from tuneful Dohnányi to folk-inspired Kodály.
Full details of all the festival events can be found at www.westmeonmusic.co.uk
The box office opens on 1st June.

Poached ChalkStream®️ Trout with Vermouth Sauce
ChalkStream®️ Trout, based near Romsey, source, prepare and deliver the finest English rainbow trout from their sustainable farms, which draw from the fast-flowing clear waters of the world-famous Test and Itchen Rivers. Their firm, athletic trout, rich in protein and vitamin D, low in fat and high in flavour, is enthused over by top chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi and Jamie Oliver
INGREDIENTS
• 50ml fish stock
• ½ glass of dry white wine
• 1 sprig of thyme
• 2 knobs of butter
• 2 fresh fillet steaks of ChalkStream®️ Trout
• 1 shallot
• 6 small cherry tomatoes
• 75ml of double cream
• ¼ glass of white vermouth
METHOD
Add the fish stock, white wine, thyme and one knob of butter to a saucepan, season well, bring to a simmer and gently poach the ChalkStream®️ fillets for about 10 minutes (you want them still slightly undercooked) and then transfer to a plate.
Melt another knob of butter in a pan and gently sauté a finely chopped small shallot until nicely softened, adding in the quartered cherry tomatoes.
Pour in the stock from the other pan and let it bubble away to reduce right down before adding the double cream.
Bring back to a simmer for 5 minutes to reduce and thicken further.
Finally add in the trout, check the seasoning and pour in a generous splash of white vermouth. Stir in and finish with a little chopped parsley.
The dish goes really well with mashed potatoes.

A One Horse Race

“Are you coming?” She tried and failed (largely because she didn’t try very hard) to keep the impatience out of her voice. Tomorrow was Solstice and she was hoping for an early night. Weather forecast was for, as Homer would have said, a ‘rosy-fingered dawn’ and she intended to be up to see it.
“We’ve loads of time, darling. It’s not dark for ages.” Himself was engrossed with his phone and barely looked up.
The dogs, anticipating their evening walk (Muzzy had leads in her hand and everything) looked with disgust from him to her and back again.
He had a point. It was that time of year again when you could go to bed with the birds still singing and be hard pushed to rise before dawn’s rosy fingers crept above the horizon.
“What are you doing?” It couldn’t be doom scrolling on social media. Himself’s online involvement usually stretched to the news app. Lately, also the weather app for his burgeoning, obsessive interest in wind speeds. Since buying a brand-spanking new gazebo, there’d been a lot of frowning out of the window at the outside world. Also, mutterings of catastrophic collapse and talk of an emergency take-down. She assumed they were related to the gazebo and not the general demise of civilisation.
“I’m trying to find my date of birth. I’ve been scrolling for what seems like an eternity and I’m still in the 1970s..”
She dimly remembered the 1970s – and they’d seemed like an eternity at the time. Decimalisation created confusion, the three-day week created hardship. Dinners that were half-cooked when the power was cut, and dodgy hair styles everywhere. Although she’d longed for a Farrah Fawcett feather cut, the exception that proved the rule. That she didn’t have the pre-requisite round brush, nor a nebula of hairspray and did not own a hairdryer, were mere trifling details that stood in the way of iconic status at school.
A spaniel gently pawed at her knee, rousing her from her reverie. She returned to the twenty-first century, where she did indeed possess a round brush and several nebulas of hairspray and a hairdryer. Sadly, though, she now lacked both the inclination and time to dedicate herself to high maintenance hair. The dogs had become used to Muzzy blasting her upsidedown head with that nasty, noisy thing and saying ‘that’ll do’.
But why was Himself on the internet looking for his date of birth? Her eyebrows drew together, creasing her brow with suspicion.
“Why do you need to declare your age?”
Himself was jabbing at the screen. “I have to be over eighteen.”
The line of suspicion deepened – less of a crease, more of a crevasse. If
Himself had dragged his eyes away from his descent through the decades and seen the Samaria Gorge developing on her face, the warning sirens would have been howling in his head like a scene from The Time Machine. Suspicion was being pursued by Curiosity – they were having a little race in her head.
“Over eighteen? Why?”
“Because it’s an adult website, I suppose.” He really should have been looking at her.
“Come on dogs!” she announced loudly, “let’s leave Daddy to his allconsuming ADULT website and go for a walk.”
The ‘W’ word lit the blue touch paper and she stood well back as the dogs hurtled towards the front door.
“Wait, I’ve nearly finished registering – I just wanted to have a look at the pictures..”
Curiosity was now neck and neck with Suspicion. “But what website is it, or can’t you share that with me after twenty years of marriage.”
“Well, I’d rather not. If you don’t mind.”
She very much did mind. “It’s a secret,” he elaborated. Suspicion and Curiosity had been joined by Slightly Offended on the outside. Disbelief was bringing up the rear, but gaining ground.
Finally, Himself looked at her face. Her expression made him widen his eyes and, for a moment, he looked perplexed. Then, somewhere deep inside, the rosy fingered dawn of realisation broke.
“Oh. Oh. No. Not that sort of adult website. Not secret. No. Wrong word. Surprise. It’s a surprise!” he babbled.
Suspicion and Slightly Offended fell at the water. Curiosity and Disbelief were jostling for position. She much preferred surprises that she organised herself, because then they would be militarily well-planned, with nice refreshments and appropriate clothing. Controlling, much? Yes. She no longer fought it.
She shot him a look and, somewhere deep inside Himself, a rosy fingered dawn of remembering this important fact, also broke.
“I thought,” he explained in a rush, “that we could go on a distillery tour and cocktail masterclass for our twentieth wedding anniversary. Hence having to be over 18 to register on the website.. If you like that idea, it’d be wonderful if you would organise it,” he suggested, tentatively.
Relief came from nowhere, thundering up on the outside, only to be pipped at the post, as always, by Love. Because, in spite of the also-rans, it was never going to be anything other than a one-horse race.

MEON VALLEY LIONS NEWS
Teamwork at its best –independence through local charities working together Meon Valley Lions Club and Bishop’s Waltham Rotary received a request from a local family for a donation towards an electric wheelchair for their daughter, who has had very complex medical needs since birth and now at 20 years of age, needed a bespoke electric wheelchair. Millie suffers with fatigue along with her medical challenges and could no longer self-propel a chair and due to the cost, her mother contacted the Clubs for help. Both Clubs were so moved by the request and considered how best to support the purchase. Other Rotary Clubs in the area were contacted (Bishop’s Waltham Rotary, Southampton Magna Rotary, Hedge End Rotary) and the full amount for the wheelchair was raised.

Millie’s mum said “When we approached the local Clubs, we certainly didn't expect such an enthusiastic response. We were completely blown away when several charities decided to team up and jointly fund the whole cost of the equipment - this is completely life-changing for Millie, with the combination of the Benoit Light Drive and the Track Wheel, she can independently travel at speeds of up to 6 miles per hour; previously we

A Summer to Remember in the Meon Valley
Two
exceptional events are coming to The Dell this July, and if you haven't yet discovered this hidden gem of the Hampshire countryside, now is very much the moment.
Tucked away in the Meon Valley near East Meon, The Dell has quietly earned itself a devoted following among families, food lovers and anyone who appreciates something special done with real care. This summer, it's playing host to not one but two standout events: the beloved Dellfest family festival across the 17th and 18th July, followed swiftly by Country Night at The Dell on Sunday 19th July - an evening of headline country music acts.
Dellfest has grown into one of the most anticipated events in the county's summer calendar, and it's easy to understand why. This is a festival shaped with thought and warmth, one that feels nothing like the vast, exhausting affairs that dominate the festival circuit. Here, children run barefoot across the grass, friends linger over wood-fired pizzas, and the whole field settles into a gentle, joyful rhythm as the evening arrives.
Friday kicks off from 4pm with live performances from The Fabulous FUG Band and HYPR, setting the tone for a weekend of music that's big on atmosphere without being overwhelming. Saturday opens at midday with an even fuller programme: Swan Samba, Little Town Choir, Truly Medley Deeply and Earth Lights take to the stage, building beautifully through the afternoon into the evening.
For families, the daytime activities are impressive. There's festival face glitter, pottery,

adventure sessions, a giant inflatable zone, bubble entertainment, face painting, balloon twisting and a community canvas - with several activities included free with your ticket. It's the kind of offering that keeps children happily absorbed while grown-ups actually get to talk.

Food, as ever at The Dell, is taken seriously - the wood-fired sourdough pizzas are something of a signature. They're joined by a handpicked collection of local food vendors including Black Butter Social Dining, Crepe Salut, The Garden Restaurants and more. This isn't hurried festival food; it's the kind you sit down with, share, and linger over.
Tickets are flexible: day tickets start from £20 for adults (Friday) and £30 (Saturday), with children's tickets from £15. For those wanting the full experience, the Dellfest Weekender ticket covers both days at £45 for adults and £30 for children, with under-twos free.
Then, on Sunday 19th July, the weekend reaches a magnificent finale with Country Night at The Dell.
Running from 4pm to 10:30pm, this is a carefully curated evening of live country music featuring some seriously impressive names. Nashville at Heart is a band that knows how

to get a crowd singing, while the wonderful Kezia Gill brings a powerful, distinctive voice which has drawn comparisons to the greats of the genre. The final act is Hampshire sisters Ward Thomas, the acclaimed British country

duo whose harmonies and storytelling have won them a devoted following across the UK and beyond. It's a line-up that would be at home at any major music festival, set instead against the intimate, beautiful backdrop of The Dell.
Street food vendors and The Dell's own bar and café will be open throughout the evening, so there's every reason to arrive early, settle in, and make a full evening of it.
For those travelling further afield, Cedar Valley Camping and Glamping - just moments from the festival field - offers the chance to turn the weekend into a proper countryside escape.
The Golden Ticket, available for those who want it all - Dellfest plus Country Night - is priced at £75 for adults and £60 for children and represents exceptional value for what is shaping up to be an unforgettable Hampshire summer weekend.
Tickets are available now at thedellhampshire. co.uk - and given the warmth of feeling this event generates year on year, booking early is very much advised. Scan the QR Code to book and use WINCHESTER26 at checkout for a 5% discount.

DANNY CHAMBERS - WE CAN IMPROVE HEALTHCARE AND EDUCATION FOR YOUNG PEOPLE

Fighting for better local healthcare and education has been a big focus for me this past month. As the Lib Dem spokesperson for mental health, I’ve long been calling for a ban on harmful social media for under 16s. I am only too aware of the terrible damage that social media, and addictive algorithms can cause young people. Parents, teachers and children all tell me we need action now.
That's why I’ve been supporting an age-rating system similar to the one we already have for films and video games. It’s an approach supported by over 40 children’s charities, including the NSPCC. I’ve voted four times in Parliament now to ban harmful social media for under 16s. Despite the Government’s delays, I'm hoping the law will change soon.
I’ve now visited over half of the state schools in Winchester and the Meon Valley. A common challenge they're all working hard on is how to provide a suitable educational environment for children with special educational needs and disabilities (SEND).
I recently met with parents and guardians of SEND children. It was heartbreaking to hear about how they had been let down time after time by the system and I'm concerned that as the government plans SEND reform, these families are not being properly consulted. That's why alongside my colleagues in Parliament, I wrote a letter to the Secretary of State for Education asking the government to guarantee that these families would not be ignored.
I have also been concerned over delays to ADHD and autism assessments for many children in our area. The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Integrated Care Board announced that some children might not be seen until 2027. That could be a real problem as the longer a child goes without assessment, the longer they spend in school without the support that they deserve.
Parents and children need those assessments before they can get the treatment and medication they might desperately need. I’ve written to the care board asking for a clear and honest explanation about the reasons for this controversial decision.
I believe that all of these measures, whether it’s tackling harmful social media, providing suitable provision for SEND in schools, or ensuring ADHD and autism are promptly diagnosed, would both massively help the young people involved and also save us a lot of money. It’s well known that the longer delays are for healthcare, whether it’s physical or mental, the more costly treatment becomes over time. If we can get things right from the very start of a child’s life, everyone benefits.

MVARA ON THE ROAD – UPPARK AND CHAWTON
On a sunny but cool day in April, with the Meon Valley Bus full to capacity, MVARA members set off for Uppark House and Gardens.. The house has only just been reopened after renovation work by the National Trust, which acquired the house in 1954.. The house was originally built around 1690 but has undergone extension, upgrading and extensive renovation over the centuries. The extensive fire of 1989 destroyed much of the house, which was then painstakingly restored. The house has only recently reopened after further renovation work by the National Trust. It houses paintings and furniture, collected during the Grand European Tours of the Victorian era end, in the past, it hosted many lavish parties, with guests including the Prince Regent, Lady Emma Hamilton and H.G. Wells.

The surrounding gardens are in the style of architect and landscape designer Humphry Repton who transformed the property in the 19th century. The group from MVARA was given an excellent tour of the house and learnt a great deal about the previous owners, their lives and the impact they had on the building. This was followed by a garden tour with fabulous views across the South Downs.
“This was a most enjoyable and interesting day, visiting a beautiful property with good company. The welcome chocolate, when we got on the bus was such a thoughtful gesture.”
Two days later it was again sunny, but this time warm, as MVARA members were out and about again - this time to see Jane Austen's Cottage at Chawton. The cottage is small but packed with detail and much to read. It was fascinating to see the chair and small table on which Jane wrote her novels. There were many examples of her handwritten papers, covered from edge to edge in her small, tidy handwriting. Some of the group also walked the short distance from her cottage to Chawton House where her brother lived, and which she often visited. The whole area of the village and house is set in spectacular parkland and pasture, with many mature trees and pretty cottages.
“Another lovely visit with a jolly lunch enjoyed afterwards in the local pub gardens where there was much discussion about Jane and her works.”
On both occasions transport was again provided by The Meon Valley Bus, which as well as providing public transport services to all residents and visitors within the Meon Valley, with scheduled runs service to Fareham, Petersfield.and Winchester, is also available for private hire. MVARA takes advantage of this provision and of the friendly, supportive, and welcoming drivers. The Meon Valley Bus is fully owned and operated by the Meon Valley Community Bus Association (MVCBA) and is run by a dedicated team of volunteers.

But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.
of

Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.
From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.
Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.
The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.
What is Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.
Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?
This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.
Does the treatment hurt?
We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.
We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.

THE WINCHESTER CARE HOME WITH A SECRET GARDEN
Tucked away in the Hampshire countryside, just minutes from Winchester, lies an extraordinary secret.

At first glance, The Dower House appears to be a beautifully designed residential and nursing home, quietly settled into its rural surroundings. What most passers by would never imagine is what unfolds beyond its entrance: five acres of mature, carefully curated gardens alive with colour, wildlife and a rare sense of calm. It is this hidden landscape that makes The Dower House truly unlike any other care home in the area.
In a county celebrated for its rolling fields and historic estates, it is still unusual to find a private care home surrounded by such expansive gardens - and rarer still one where those gardens are designed to be explored rather than simply admired. For residents at The Dower House, these grounds are an integral part of daily life.
The gardens reveal themselves gradually, inviting discovery. Winding paths, gentle bridges and quiet corners create ever changing views, ensuring no two walks are quite the same. One of the most striking features is the Indian Bean Tree, which comes into its own in late spring and early summer when it fills the air with a soft, sweet fragrance and orchid like flowers. Later in the year, its broad heart shaped leaves and hanging bean pods provide architectural interest and a favourite stopping point for residents and visitors alike.
Nearby, a cherry blossom tree marks the changing seasons, its delicate blooms offering a moment of reflection each year. Elsewhere, the landscape opens onto a thriving pond, home to water lilies, koi carp and goldfish. Dragonflies skim the surface while birds, frogs and insects turn it into a genuine wildlife haven.
For colour lovers, the geranium bank is a standout, carpeting the landscape in rich purples when in bloom. At the front of the home, the iris bed bursts briefly but spectacularly into life, planted like an artist’s paint palette of deep blues, yellows and violets.
These gardens are not simply there to be viewed from a window. Thanks largely to Head Gardener Ben, who has cared for the grounds for over a decade, they are woven into life at The Dower House through regular walks, seasonal events and a much loved gardening club with residents.
In a sector where outdoor space is often limited, The Dower House’s five acre secret garden remains a rare and quietly enriching treasure - waiting to surprise those who step inside.
THE £34.42 NUMBER - A CLEARER PICTURE OF WHAT CARE ACTUALLY COSTS
In the first of a four-part series for Forum readers, we look at the real cost of homecare. What it is, where it goes, and what families need to know.
When families begin exploring home care services, one of the first questions they ask is 'why is care so expensive?' At first glance, the cost of care can look high, sometimes shockingly so. But understanding where the money actually goes can provide clarity, reassurance, and for those of us in the sector a much-needed dose of honesty about what good care costs to deliver.
At Lapis Care we pride ourselves on being an ethical provider, and a big part of that is being transparent about cost. We would rather have an open conversation about where your money goes than hide behind a glossy quote.
In January 2026, the Homecare Association published its annual Minimum Price for Homecare for England. For 2026/27 it sits at £34.42 per hour Up from £32.14 a year ago, and £28.53 the year before that.
This is not a price providers want to charge or families want to pay. It is the calculated minimum required to pay a carer the new National Living Wage of £12.71 for every minute of working time (including travel), cover the cost of employment (holiday pay, sick pay, training, waiting time – all of which are a legal requirement), employer National Insurance and pensions, and the minimum business overhead a CQC-regulated agency needs to function (office, registered manager, insurance, recruitment, digital systems), with a small surplus to absorb cancellations and late payments.

It is, in plain terms, priced below a level which homecare can – be legally and sustainably delivered. And yet only 1% of council contracts in England currently pay at or above this rate. Some councils still pay less than £23 an hour. Which is less than the wage cost of the carer alone, before a single penny is spent on anything else.
In Hampshire, Surrey, Sussex and across the South Coast, what families pay can be meaningfully different from the national headline. But the principles behind a quote are the same wherever you live. Knowing the benchmark lets you ask the right questions.

Update on the Allen Gallery - Hampshire Cultural Trust Allen Gallery Redevelopment
We’re delighted to share that construction has officially begun on site. This is a major milestone for the project and an exciting step towards the venue’s transformation. The venue closed at Christmas as planned, and all activity has now successfully transferred to the Curtis Museum while works take place.

Alongside this, the wider project continues to make strong progress. Our community engagement programme remains active, with family activities running during school holidays, artist residencies underway with local creatives, and a range of opportunities helping our volunteers stay closely connected and involved throughout the redevelopment.
To stay up to date with project related activities and events, keep an eye on the Curtis Museum website: hampshireculture.org.uk/curtis-museum

UNDERSTANDING RURAL AFFORDABLE HOUSING AND ITS POTENTIAL ROLE LOCALLY
Do you know a young person who has had to move away because they couldn’t afford to live locally?
In many rural parts of Hampshire, housing is expensive. Younger adults aged 35 and under are often forced to move away, families can struggle to find suitable homes, and key workers may be unable to live in the communities they serve.
Rural affordable housing helps address this challenge. These are homes offered at costs local people can afford, including affordable rent and shared ownership options. Applicants must have a connection to the local area, ensuring homes go to those who already live, work, or have family there.
Even a small number of affordable homes (5 to 10 properties) can make a real difference. They help younger residents stay close to family and friends, support those living in overcrowded housing or looking to downsize, and enable key workers such as teachers, carers and tradespeople to live locally.

Affordable housing also benefits the wider community. For example, research by the Rural Services Network shows that just 10 new homes can generate £1.4 million in economic activity and support 26 jobs, helping sustain schools, shops, pubs, and other essential services.

Action Hampshire works with local communities and parish councils to explore opportunities for affordable housing. You can help by contacting your parish council to highlight the need in your area, and by encouraging them to get in touch with us to discuss how new affordable homes could benefit your community.
