appy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street. We have never had less than a 5 star
review and have won the HOUZZ Best of Service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses.
unexciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.
We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and

The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. IT’S TIME TO PUT AN END TO SOUTHERN WATER’S FAILURE DANNY CHAMBERS MP This summer has been one of the hottest and driest on record. That has put extreme pressure on our farms and our natural environment. The problems we’re facing with our water supply now were entirely predictable. We’re being hit with a triple whammy of threats. Climate change is supercharging dry and wet spells, Conservative and Labour governments have failed to invest in new reservoirs and water conservation measures, and our private water companies have chosen to put all of their profits into CEO pay and shareholder payouts instead of investing in infrastructure. Southern Water has been responsible for 15 serious pollution incidents this past year alone, the second highest of all water companies. I’ve heard from so many people who have had trouble - I helped a farmer win the compensation they deserved after the company spilled sewage over their crops, risking their entire livelihood and park homes residents were being continuously overcharged for their water usage until I demanded Southern Water listen to their case and treat them fairly. These kinds of issues should never happen in the first place, and customers certainly shouldn’t be ignored unless an MP gets involved. For years, they’ve failed to invest in repairing leaks, and now during this dry summer are asking us to do their job for them and tell people to conserve water. At the same time as they’re increasing bills by hundreds and hundreds of pounds, an almost 50% increase over last year, they have decided to reward their boss with a £1.4million pay deal. Why is the board of Southern Water rewarding this failure?
COUNTRY LIVING WITH THE COUNTRY HOUSE COMPANY For Sale - Tranquil Elegance in the South Downs Price Guide £1,250,000
Tucked away on the outskirts of East Meon, this elegant, detached home offers peace and privacy in the picturesque South Downs National Park within a short distance of the heart of the village and with the A3 and Petersfield close by. Set amid mature sunny gardens, the property has been thoughtfully and stylishly refurbished throughout. The current owners have completed a full renovation — including a sleek new kitchen and contemporary bathrooms — transforming the residence into a bright, spacious and beautifully presented modern retreat. To Let - Monkwood Charm – A Country Retreat Near Alresford - £2,500 pcm, excl
After our calls for a ban on bonuses for water bosses, the Government promised to act. Clearly the companies are finding ways around the rules. That’s why I joined with Liz Jarvis MP for Eastleigh and other Lib Dem colleagues to write to the Secretary of State for the Environment and the Minister for Water, calling on them to scrutinise these practices and to put a stop to this unjustified profiteering. We have some of the most beautiful rivers in Hampshire, with the river Itchen running right through the heart of our community, alongside the nearby Meon and Test. These rivers are home to many endangered species like salmon and otters. After years of failure, Southern Water is now trying to lobby government to allow them to draw even more water from the Test. This simply cannot be allowed to happen. It will damage the river and local wildlife. If they’re successful, I fear that the Itchen would be next. It’s time to scrap Ofwat for a regulator with teeth that can actually hold these companies to account, and we should replace all of them with public benefit companies who work for us, not their overpaid CEOs. If you’ve had trouble with Southern Water, please do get in touch and I’ll fight as hard as I can to hold Southern Water to account and get the change we need for everyone. WELBORNE GARDEN VILLAGE Work and play at Welborne
An autumn stroll through ancient woodland A short walk from the park is Dashwood, Welborne’s ancient woodland - a place that reveals something new with each season. In autumn, the canopy shifts to deep reds and golds before the leaves fall, layering the paths in colour. In the damp undergrowth, clusters of wild mushrooms appear, and squirrels can be seen gathering acorns for the colder months. Dashwood’s winding trails invite unhurried exploration, offering quiet autumnal moments.
Why choose Welborne? At Welborne Garden Village, we recognise the importance of balancing work and play - and even though the school term may have begun, the fun doesn’t have to stop. This autumn, Welborne’s new playground and park will fully open, offering schoolaged children the perfect place to engage in creative play and socialise with their friends. On sunny September afternoons, they can play under the park’s trees and look for butterflies, bees, and dragonflies that are in abundance.

Fostering Wellbeing in Young People
St Swithun’s Wellbeing and Grit Festival featuring Will Young
A
day dedicated to mental health, mindfulness and wellbeing; St Swithun’s School was transformed into a Wellbeing and Grit festival – featuring workshops, activities and a special appearance by Will Young. National pop artist and author of Be Yourself and Happier: The A-Z of Wellbeing, Will Young, gave an inspiring talk and took part in a Q&A hosted by sixth-form students. “I wanted to tell the girls that we are all so brilliantly unique and that there is nobody else like you in the world. The students listened so well, and the panel asked some excellent questions. “The special thing in a school like St Swithun’s is that you can come together as a collective on a day like this, like a family, and you can celebrate each other’s individuality. It has been a wonderful event and I’m so thankful to have been invited to speak.” The festival opened with a performance, Q&A and autograph session from The Entitled Sons. A charismatic band of brothers, The Entitled Sons shared their advice and stories on bullying and mental health, telling students, “When you find that thing you really love, try really hard at that because you could be doing it forever. You could even be doing it as a career.” Girls then visited different zones around the school grounds, each promoting a different aspect of wellbeing.
The relaxation zone offered a tranquil escape with calming experiences such as breathwork, charcoal yoga, perfume making and hypnotherapy. Dr Helen O’Connor, St Swithun’s clinical psychologist and festival organiser, explained, “The main aim for the day was to find opportunities for the students to focus on their wellbeing and to put themselves in situations that they may not normally have tried.”
12
Exemplifying this spirit of curiosity and challenge, girls immersed themselves in pottery throwing, African drumming and circus tricks in the enquiring and grit zone. Army veteran Rob Shenton later joined the zone to share his journey from a serious skull fracture and PTSD to representing Team UK in the Invictus Games, inspiring students with a powerful lesson in resilience and perseverance. “I think today has shown St Swithun’s at its very best, both in our focus on wellbeing and in the grit of the girls who have thrown themselves fully into activities they have never tried before, going from one to the next with huge smiles”, said Lucy Tipp, head of psychology at St Swithun’s. Prep students had the opportunity to explore wellbeing tools with sessions in breathwork, hypnotherapy, mindfulness and vision boarding before bouncing across the field in zorbs and enjoying an inflatable obstacle course. The petting zoo, complete with alpaca walking, was a highlight for all students. A myriad of activities continued to take place across the prep school
in the afternoon including dancing, nutrition workshops and yoga. The last zone was positive purpose and giving back. Students prepared flower arrangements, which they then delivered to a local care home, and baked cookies for The Winchester Beacon night shelter. Vicki from St Catherine’s View care home thanked all involved and said, “It was great to see that these were extremely well received by the residents – and the families in the homes visiting today. They have really brightened up the home.” St Swithun’s headmistress, Jane Gandee, reflecting on the festival said, “We feel that wellbeing is the foundation for success both in and beyond the classroom. Girls who feel supported and confident in themselves can achieve anything they set their minds to.” Prep pupils aged 3-11 benefited from the exposure to wellbeing tools and activities, and Prep Head Liz Norris added, “Unique experiences like this show our girls that looking after your wellbeing can be fun and rewarding. We hope they carry these lessons with them long after today.” St Swithun’s is an all-girls' independent school with award-winning pastoral care. The school’s aim is to educate students about how to look after themselves and to develop relevant self-care strategies. St Swithun’s School, Winchester, SO21 1HA T: 01962 835700 www.stswithuns.com

stimulate viewers to question or imagine....or simply smile. Over the course of the workshops you will explore how collaging can be used to process and record memorable moments in time to support wellbeing, from simple gestures to more significant events. The aim is to share how this illustrative technique can take away the ‘intimidation’ of a blank page but present a creative challenge through its use of limited materials within a structured and supported framework. You will also learn about artists who work in this medium, as well as the benefits of being a ‘maker’. Open to all levels of artistic ability, each unit will focus on a different method to record a personal narrative , in a supportive and non-threatening way, using easily resourced materials. Summer Exhibition
Ancient Woodland - A celebration of place A major exhibition of works by local artists Mary Waltham and Jacqueline Amies. (Continues until 20 September). Inspired by and rooted in the ancient woodlands of our locality, the exhibition invites visitors to the Allen Gallery to be curious about these rare and special areas to which we are fortunate enough to have access. According to the Woodland Trust “Ancient woods are our richest and most complex terrestrial habitat in the UK and they are home to more threatened species than any other. Centuries of undisturbed soils and accumulated decaying wood have created the perfect place for communities of fungi and invertebrates and specialist species of insects, birds and mammals.” (Woodland Trust 2024) Workshops & Events A programme of activities, supported by the National Lottery Heritage Fund, accompanies the exhibition, exploring some of the themes presented. There will be opportunities to learn more about some of the stories behind the Allen Gallery’s permanent collections and some surprising connections with rural woodland sites and raw materials. The artists will be holding a "In Conversation " session on Saturday 13th September from 2pm - 4pm. Further details on the Gallery website www.hampshireculture.org.uk/allen-gallery

The Club had a really busy month, not least organising the annual Swanmore Village Fete. As you can imagine, running an event of this size takes a lot of planning and effort, so we would like to say a special thank you to the Club members’ friends, who without their support, we wouldn’t have been able to run the event.

COOL DOWN IN STYLE:
Bathroom Ideas for a Summer Refresh WITH A RIPPLES BATHROOM DESIGN SPECIALIST
As temperatures rise, there’s no better time to give your bathroom a summerinspired refresh. Whether you’re looking to create a spa-like retreat or just lighten up your space for the season, a few well-considered updates can make your bathroom feel cooler, calmer and effortlessly stylish. Here, Tyler, Designer from Ripples Bishop’s Waltham, talks through the top things to consider when getting your bathroom ready for those hotter months.
Upgrade to a Statement Shower When it’s hot outside, a long, cool shower can be the ultimate indulgence. If you’re thinking bigger, consider upgrading to a rainfall shower or an open-plan wet room layout. Not only does it feel luxurious, but it also keeps things light and open, perfect for a summer reset. Large-format tiles and frameless glass panels can enhance the sense of space, while integrated lighting and brushed brass fixtures add a contemporary touch.
Switch Up Your Accessories Sometimes, a few small swaps are all it takes, switch out heavy towels for lighter linens or swap your bathmat for something woven or textural. Even changing your fragrance to something citrusy or herbal can transform the mood of the room. Embrace Lighter Tones Summer is all about light and airiness, so consider swapping darker hues for softer, sun-washed tones. Think sandy beiges, seafoam greens, crisp whites and pale blues. These colours not only reflect light beautifully but also bring a serene, coastal calm to your space, perfect for unwinding on warmer days.
Whether you’re going for a full renovation or just making a few summery tweaks, your bathroom can be a space to cool off, relax, and feel refreshed all season long. After all, good design isn’t just about how a space looks, it’s about how it makes you feel.

Trust joins national call to ban bottom trawling in Marine Protected Areas
Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is supporting a new campaign from The Wildlife Trusts calling for a UKwide ban on destructive bottom trawling in offshore Marine Protected Areas (MPAs).
The campaign, launched during National Marine Week, coincides with a government consultation on banning bottom-towed fishing gear in 41 offshore MPAs - areas at sea designed to protect special habitats or wildlife. Key sites close to our waters include the Offshore Brighton, Offshore Overfalls and Albert Field Marine Conservation Zones (MCZs), and the Wight-Barfleur Reef Special Area of Conservation (SAC). While the Solent is home to some of the richest and most diverse marine habitats in the UK from saltmarsh to seagrass meadows and coastal mudflats to subtidal reefs - many of the species found here depend on healthy habitats far beyond the shoreline. Offshore areas are vital links in the wider marine ecosystem that connects coastal waters with the deeper seas beyond – and are vital parts of this connected ecosystem. The Trust is emphasising the crucial role these offshore MPAs play in supporting marine life that can be found in local inshore waters such as the Solent - one of the UK's most ecologically rich but pressured coastal zones. Emily Stroud, Marine Nature Recovery Manager at Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, says: “The Solent’s marine environment is
30
only part of the story. Our seas are a vast, interconnected network - what happens offshore affects what we see and protect on our shores. From migratory species like European eels, bass, and thresher sharks, to species breeding in the Solent like cuttlefish, marine life needs safe habitats throughout its life cycle, across coastal and offshore waters.
“That’s why protecting the seabed in the wider English Channel is crucial - not just for biodiversity but for the health of our fisheries and the long-term recovery of marine ecosystems we all rely on. “Marine life doesn’t recognise lines on a map. The species we love and work to protect here rely on healthy habitats throughout the English Channel. "We’re backing this national campaign because what happens offshore matters locally. Protecting seabed habitats in deeper waters is essential if we want to see real recovery in the Solent and beyond.” Bottom trawling - where heavy nets are dragged along the seafloor - is widely recognised as one of the most damaging fishing practices. It destroys fragile habitats, disturbs carbon-storing sediments, and undermines the biodiversity MPAs were set up to protect. The Solent already has partial protection through local byelaws that restrict bottom-towed gear in certain habitats, such as seagrass meadows and some mud and sand flats. However, Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust stresses that these protections are just one piece of a larger ecological puzzle.
Many species seen in the Solent migrate across wide areas of sea and rely on connected, healthy seabed habitats throughout their lifecycles. “Even though the Solent has some local protections, the fight doesn’t end at our shores,” adds Emily. “It’s all connected. If we want to see eels returning to our rivers, seagrass thriving in our harbours, and healthy fisheries for future generations, we need to stand up now for the whole marine ecosystem. “Protecting offshore sites supports local marine life, healthy fisheries, and more resilient ecosystems overall.” How to take action this National Marine Week: Hampshire and Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is encouraging the public to back these proposals and demand truly meaningful protection for marine life. Support the call to ban bottom trawling in MPAs by responding to the government consultation. https://www.wildlifetrusts.org/wildlife-andwild-places/sea/what-bottom-trawling

A Light Lunch ~ Panzanella (Tuscan tomato & bread salad)
Makes 2 Servings INGREDIENTS
METHOD
• 200G STALE CIABATTA LOAF (HOXTON BAKERY ) • 600G RIPE MIXED TOMATOES, ROUGHLY CHOPPED (ISLE OF WIGHT TOMATOES) • 1 SMALL ONION, PEELED AND VERY FINELY DICED • 1 RED PEPPER, SLICED IN BATONS • 2 TBS RED WINE VINEGAR • 6 TBS EXTRA VIRGIN OLIVE OIL • A BUNCH OF FRESH BASIL • SHAVINGS OF OLD WINCHESTER - LYBURN CHEESE OR REPLACE WITH GOUDA • SEA SALT TO TASTE • FRESHLY GROUND BLACK PEPPER TO TASTE • 1 HANDFUL SMALL CAPERS , DRAINED
Tear the ciabatta into rough 3cm pieces and place on a tray. Leave aside in a warm place for around 30 minutes – this helps to dry it out.

Not Catching © LUCIA FOSTER-FOUND 2025

tood on Hurst shingle bank, looking out towards The Needles as the dogs paddled in and out of the surf, they tackled up. “Today is the day. I feel it in my fish bones. Oh yes!” Himself was full of hope and added “You might get some mackerel – I’ve brought feathers.”
A few years ago, the word ‘feathers’ in this context would have confused her. She’d have wondered if he planned to tickle the fish into submission, or dress them up as a showgirl, name of Lola. Now she knew better. A world of alluring lures and scintillating spinners had since opened up and she was planning to use these to catch herself a bass. In spite of the in-shore water over-fishing, Himself’s optimism was catching. Watching him busy baiting up some beach casters with ragworm, she shuddered. Happy to dig them up and gingerly scoop them into a bucket, she couldn’t quite bring herself to push them, wriggling, onto a hook. Especially after she found out that the scary looking things could bite. As he cast out his baited, weighted hook he cried out. “I’m going for flatfish. Frying tonight!” He looked so happy, standing there in his beloved tatty old shorts kept especially for the seaside, watching the end of the rod for the telltale ‘dip dip’ that might indicate a nibble. She set up the beach shelter for the dogs and unpacked the picnic under their watchful eyes. “High time you got new shorts” she said as she took over his ham and cheese baguette. “Mmn yes, soon” he seemed to agree. “Really?” she asked, surprised, given his devotion to the slightly sad cut-offs. “Yes. High tide, about an hour. You’d best get casting” oblivious that his selective hearing had clearly kicked in, he munched on his sandwich.
34
“I think that was a bite!” he cried out excitedly and dropped his lunch to reel in his line. His back was turned to the dogs, his baguette enticingly unprotected. In a canine parody of the game ‘Grandma’s footsteps’ the dogs crept out of the tent. Their necks stretched forth; elongated like moray eels issuing from their lair. Himself, disappointed that there was no plaice the size of a dinner plate on his line, re-cast and reached for his baguette. The dogs froze and then retreated, drooling, backwards into the tent. Catching her watching them, they shot her a look she could only describe as shifty.
Casting out her own line with its bewitching lure; articulated and vibrant, it mimicked a swooping, swimming fish as she reeled it back. She had high hopes and shortly it was her turn for an enthusiastic “I think I’ve got something!” as she felt encouraging resistance, only to be disappointed by the hook’s heavy cargo of weed. Fishing was a wonderfully distracting waste of an afternoon; a respite from concerns of work and family. More an exercise in anticipation of the catch, they were not overly disappointed with no fishy on a little dishy for their dinner. Not catching any fish, they were also not ‘catching’ anything else out in the open air and far from people. As the soft September sun slid towards the horizon, they packed up their collection of lures, feathers, hooks and spinners – and liberated the remaining ragworms. The couple walked back along the shingle to their car, whilst the dogs ran splashily along the water line, enthusiastically chasing seagulls and each other. “Fish and chips in Milford-on-Sea?” he asked as she switched on the ignition. “I didn’t think you’d be hungry so soon after that enormous baguette?” she’d anticipated cooking a light supper later. “Half a baguette darling” he remonstrated. Half a baguette?? She looked around at the spaniels lying down in the back of the car. One wagged its tail. “and to be honest, the end was a bit soggy.” Soggy?? She turned around again; the other spaniel raised a weary head and looked at her. Was that a crumb in its whiskers? Himself was conducting a post mortem on the lack of success. “Do you know, maybe it was the wrong bait – I’ll use something else next time. Perhaps squid, or maybe prawns. I don’t think that I had so much as a nibble all day” he mused, looking out of the window. She glanced once more at the dogs, who apparently unashamed of their feat of grand theft sandwich, didn’t even have the decency to look guilty. Should she tell Himself that he’d had more than a nibble on his bait and caught one, if not two ‘dog’ fish? Maybe later, when he’d forgotten about the soggy end...

The Festival programme kicks off on 12th September with a poetry evening at local bookshop Goldfinch Books, starring fabulous guest poet Rachel Long. Poetry continues into the weekend with an inspiring poetry workshop and talk by Maura Dooley– award winning poet, Austen lover, and former Poet in Residence at Jane Austen’s House. We’ll be hosting inspiring creative workshops including Botanicals of the Regency led by Geanina Grigore, and Mindful Painting by Kristina Kivu, which promise to be inspiring and relaxing – and a lot of fun! There will also be some festival favourites, from our popular free Sewing Circle and Drop in and Draw events, to a magical Reading Aloud of scenes from Persuasion in the Drawing Room. The Festival line up includes a series of wonderful talks – from a Drawing Room lecture by acclaimed novelist Salley Vickers to talks on Jane Austen’s Garden by Molly Williams, how the natural world features in Persuasion by Professor Michael Greaney, Letters and Ephemera in Persuasion by book creator Barbara Heller, and a dive into the darker side of Regency England with menswear historian Mark Wallis. Lucinda Hawksley will lead an intimate Persuasion salon and will also host an in conversation event with novelist Emily Howes. On the last day of the Festival, take advantage of our Full Day Pass which covers House entry and four talks! Investing for children – your options
Investing on behalf of your children or grandchildren could help them graduate debt free, get a foot onto the property ladder, or benefit from an additional income stream. There are several options to consider, including Junior ISAs, junior pensions, certain types of trust and, for older children, Lifetime ISAs. The right solution for you will depend on your family’s needs.
Lifetime ISA For older children, a Lifetime ISA can help provide for their first home or retirement. The account holder must be between 18 and 39 years old and can pay in up to £4,000 a year until age 50. The government will add a 25% bonus.
All the below options come with tax implications for the donor, so it’s important to seek financial advice.
The account holder can withdraw money from age 60 or to buy their first home. If withdrawals are made for any other reason, a 25% charge will apply.
Junior ISA
Next steps
The Junior ISA must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £9,000 per tax year.
Choosing between these options isn’t easy, and that’s where getting some financial advice comes in. By understanding you and what you want to achieve, we can recommend an investment solution that’s right for you and your family.
Investments inside a Junior ISA are free from income tax and capital gains tax (CGT).
Junior pension A junior pension must be opened by the child’s parent or legal guardian, but anyone can contribute up to £2,880 (net) per tax year. Contributions benefit from 20% income tax relief.
Bare trust A bare trust is a useful option for those wishing to retain some control over how the funds are used. Unlike a Junior ISA or pension, there is no limit on the amount of money that can be invested in a bare trust each year.
Discretionary trust A discretionary trust can offer greater flexibility and control, as trustees have discretion over how and when the funds are paid out. Discretionary trusts are more complex from a tax perspective, with potential charges on trust income and gifts to the trust.

MUCKY WEEKENDER FESTIVAL
WINCHESTER POETRY FESTIVAL
THE ROMSEY SHOW 2025
This is more than just a festival. It’s a full-on sensory explosion of music, nature, and nonstop fun with an incredible community. Expect the unexpected as we take things to a whole new level—it’s going to be utterly EPIC! Don’t miss out on this celebration of life, music, and unity. We can’t wait to see your faces back at our beloved home!
We’re here to be a round table for poetry where everyone is welcome. We are a poetry organisation that does all sorts of things - from hosting our much-acclaimed biennial festival in Winchester, to our popular Winchester Poetry Prize competition, to our wider work with schools and community organisations.
The Alresford Show is organised by the Alre The Romsey Show takes place on Saturday 13 September at the Broadlands Estate in Romsey. It is one of the largest one-day country shows in the South and is run by a large team of dedicated volunteers. The show provides a fantastic day out with something for all the family to enjoy!
The Theme For 2025 is…… Dead Famous The new dates for 2025 are Thursday 11th September (as an optional extra), Friday 12th and Saturday 13th September at our beautiful home Vicarage Farm, Winchester, SO21 3BL We look forward to welcoming you again!!
42
We are here to share, showcase, celebrate and champion great poetry - because we believe in its power to bring us all together and make a positive, enriching difference to our lives and the society we live in. We are a hub for poetry locally, nationally and internationally - from Winchester to the world.
Access to the site is very easy from the A33 which is the main road between Winchester and Basingstoke. Please purchase your car pass with your festival ticket. There is a drop off point before entering the Car Park. There is no other parking allowed within walking distance of the site. There is a Railway station at Micheldever Station just 2.5 miles away. The service is on the South West Mainline from Waterloo to Southampton and runs regularly weekdays and weekends. Sorry there are no rural bus stops near the festival.
Winchester Poetry Festival was established in 2013 with the first festival taking place in September 2014. We also promote one-off events and work in partnership with Hampshire Cultural Trust to run the Hampshire Poet programme and the Hampshire Young Poet Competition.
Mucky Weekender is held in 30 acres of parkland with no hardstanding areas. The ground is reasonably flat and even. Whilst there are some sheltered areas (marquees, stretch tents and performance spaces), it is mainly an open-air event. Ground conditions are therefore weather dependent (if we experience extreme weather the ground may become muddy), therefore mobility across the site may become compromised.
Winchester Poetry Festival 2025 is a celebration of poetry performances, readings, workshops and activities for all. Curated by Clare Pollard on the theme "Revisiting The Classics" Featured poets include Diane Seuss, Mona Arshi, Richard Scott, Roy McFarlane, Joelle Taylor, Fiona Benson, Luke Kennard and Mary Jean Chan. They will be exploring the work of Marvell, Shakespeare, Jane Austen, Edward Thomas, Keats, Dante, Al-Busiri, Bing Xin, Adrienne Rich and more.

Attractions across the Showground include the Grand Parade of livestock, popular Countryside Area, equine classes, live music and stunning floral displays. Bring your dog and take part in the Family Dog Show. Other exhibits include classic cars, steam engines and tents featuring honey, art and horticulture. The Show welcomes a wide range of local businesses and organisations, with shopping opportunities galore. The dedicated Food Zone, complete with Beggars Fair performance stage and picnic area, offers a variety of food and drink from local producers using quality ingredients. News from the South Downs National Park
One of the grandest historic buildings in the National Park has just re-opened after repairs and renovations.
The National Trust’s Uppark House and Garden, near South Harting, has reopened after being closed for the last year and a half.
The 17th century house and landscaped garden are open four days a week from Sunday to Wednesday until 1 October. Visitors can now enjoy the tranquil garden, café and second-hand bookshop free of charge.
Uppark’s beautiful Georgian interiors, including its atmospheric servants’ quarters, can be explored on new bookable guided tours. Michaela Saunders-Hall, Visitor Operations Manager, said: “We’re thrilled to be welcoming visitors back to Uppark, and excited to be opening our gardens, café and second-hand bookshop for free so that everyone can enjoy popping here for a delicious slice of cake and a brew with a view! “Our enthusiastic volunteers are all ready to guide visitors through the house with stories of the Fetherstonehaugh’s, H.G Wells and Lady Emma

As we enjoy the last few weeks of summer and head into autumn, it’s a time to really savour the South Downs landscape and its incredible beauty. These late summer days are also a wonderful time to capture photography.

The garden, which offers spectacular views over the South Downs, has seen some changes. Head Gardener Chris Skinner: “Our new garden pathways allow all our visitors to roam more freely through glades of trees, past flower borders and into the wildflower meadow. We’ve introduced new planting schemes too, with a strong focus on colour and scent, invoking the spirit of Humphrey Repton, the gardens’ original 19th century landscape designer.”
will also receive a bonus prize of a place on a workshop with the Royal Photographic Society’s Landscape Group.
The South Downs National Park is full of iconic gems that make for great photographs – from the stunning landscape, to the awe-inspiring wildlife, to the majestic old buildings and street scenes. As the National Park is celebrating its 15th birthday this year, people are being invited to photograph some of their favourite things about the South Downs – whether that be locations, views, towns and villages, heritage, food and drink, or whatever the imagination can think of! The prizes for the competition, Three cheers for 15 years: South Downs favourites, will be £250 for first place, £150 for second place, £75 for third place and £50 for fourth place.

As always there will be a separate wildlife category, with a £150 prize for the best shot and £75 for the runner-up image. The youth competition returns this year for budding young photographers – with categories 10 years and under and 11 to 17. Young photographers are being challenged to snap an amazing shot of their favourite aspect of the South Downs National Park. The prize for 10 years and under will be a family ticket to Marwell, while the winner of the 11 to 17 category will win a GoApe adventure for two. One of the prizewinners, to be picked at random,

COMMUNITY / WELLBEING
CELEBRATING JANE AUSTEN WITH FELICITY KENDAL AND JAMES GILCHRIST The 250th anniversary of Jane Austen’s birth will be celebrated in memorable style at this year’s 15th West Meon Music Festival with a special gala concert, Jane Austen’s Playbook, starring leading actress Felicity Kendal as narrator reading extracts from Austen's letters, notebooks and novels with the selection curated by internationallycelebrated director Nancy Meckler. Joining them will be renowned tenor James Gilchrist and the festival’s founders, the Primrose Piano Quartet, with songs and chamber music from Jane Austen’s time, including works by Schubert, Beethoven, Handel, Haydn, and Maria Theresia von Paradis. Highlight of the concert will be the world première of a new work – Notes for a Novel – or “how a tune a day inspired the development of Pride & Prejudice.…”, – commissioned by the festival from Peter Salem, known for his extensive output of TV, film and theatre music (among them the ever popular theme “Call the Midwife”).

As well as six concerts in West Meon, there will also be a harpsichord recital in Warnford’s lovely Church of Our Lady and a morning concert of string quartets at East Meon’s All Saints. Other highlights include a recital by young pianist Clara Isabella Siegle, who made her orchestral début at the age of nine, and is gaining worldwide renown as a solo artist. The opening concert on 11th September will mark the 50th anniversary of the death of Dmitri Shostakovich, one of the most remarkable and popular composers of the twentieth century, with a performance of his Second Piano Trio. Completed in 1944, this supremely moving work reflects on the horrors of the Second Word War. COMMUNITY
CELEBRATING A DECADE OF WINCHESTER HERITAGE OPEN DAYS
This September marks a remarkable milestone for Winchester Heritage Open Days as the festival returns for its tenth year. Since its founding in 2016, this much-loved local tradition has grown into a ten-day celebration of our city’s rich history, cultural heritage, and extraordinary architecture - all delivered free to the public by a dedicated team of volunteers and supporters.
AN EVENING WITH DAME MARY BERRY
Part of the national Heritage Open Days scheme, Winchester’s festival is special in its local spirit and ambition. Over the years it has offered a dazzling variety of events, from behind-the-scenes tours of historic buildings to music, theatre, workshops, and living history. It is no exaggeration to say there is something for everyone, whether you are a lifelong resident rediscovering familiar places or a first-time visitor uncovering Winchester’s secrets. Organised and run by local charity, Hampshire History Trust, since 2020, the festival has become more than just a series of open doors. It is a community-wide invitation to connect with the stories, traditions, and places that shape our shared identity. The Trust’s mission to advance Hampshire’s heritage has led to other exciting projects and programmes, including the launch of the popular Hampshire HistBites podcast in 2020, and a newly established year-round series of public talks, ensuring that history remains alive, accessible, and meaningful for all. This year’s festival, taking place from 12th to 21st September, promises to be especially memorable. With architecture as its theme, memories, and the secrets behind her culinary success. From training at Le Cordon Bleu in Paris and the Bath School of Home Economics, to her pioneering role as cookery editor at Housewife magazine, and her rise to television stardom—Mary will bring her journey vividly to life as she talks with Gaby. This promises to be an evening brimming with heart-warming anecdotes, practical baking wisdom, trademark humour—and absolutely no soggy bottoms.
Join the inimitable Dame Mary Berry in conversation with Gaby Huddart as she celebrates both her 90th birthday and the release of her latest book, Mary 90. Beloved across the UK and beyond, Dame Mary Berry is a national treasure whose warmth, expertise and unmistakable charm have inspired generations of cooks. Whether you know her as the discerning judge from The Great British Bake Off and Best Home Cook, or have whipped up delights from one of her more than 80 bestselling cookbooks, Dame Mary’s influence on all our kitchens is immeasurable. Now, step inside her extraordinary six-decade career as she shares personal stories, treasured

Mary’s brand-new cookbook, Mary 90 — featuring 90 of her most iconic fuss-free recipes —will be published in October from BBC Books to coincide with a major new BBC TV series. We are thrilled to have been selected to host one of very few of Dame Mary’s events this autumn, don’t miss this unique opportunity to listen to Dame Mary’s cookery wisdom and the opportunity to put your own culinary questions to Mary herself.
Venue: Middle Brook Centre, Middle Brook Street, Winchester, SO23 8DQ Fri 17 Oct 2025 | 7:00pm - 8:00pm
visitors will be invited to look at Winchester with fresh eyes, exploring the craft, vision, and social histories embedded in its buildings. From medieval masterpieces to modern marvels, the programme will offer guided walks, expert talks, open days, activities and hands-on workshops that reveal the stories behind the walls that surround us. At its heart, Winchester Heritage Open Days is about community. It is a testament to what can be achieved when local people come together to celebrate and share their heritage. As we mark this tenth anniversary, it is worth pausing to acknowledge the countless hours of volunteer work that have made the festival such a success, as well as the local businesses whose support has seen the festival expand to more than a hundred events annually. Each year, Winchester Heritage Open Days reminds us that history does not simply belong to the past. It is something we shape and share in the present, ensuring it endures for future generations. www.winchesterheritageopendays.org
PERFECT PITCH CONCERTS With young music students returning from summer holidays, Perfect Pitch Concerts returns with its usual variety, including programmes offered by young students drawn from local schools and The Royal Academy of Music - something for everyone – details can be found here:- www.perfectpitchconcerts.co.uk Autumnal activities will be getting under way and notable day in the month is Michaelmas, which falls on 29th September. Since the 14th Century this Christian Festival has been celebrated throughout the United Kingdom, and communities in towns and villages have held “Hiring Fairs” where labourers were hired, following the shortage after the Black Death Plague. These “Fairs or Fayres” evolved over time into places of entertainment, with music and dancing, opportunities to dress up and buy autumnal produce of the land and crafts. There will be no better opportunity to experience a Michaelmas Fair than at The Hospital of St Cross in Winchester on Saturday 27th September, between 10.30am and 4pm.
