COMMUNITY / PROPERTY

LEARNING FOR LIFE AT WELBORNE September is often described as a second New Year. Fresh school uniforms are unpacked and labelled, notebooks are filled with good intentions for the coming months and families settle back into familiar routines after the summer holidays. Autumn is a season of new beginnings, making it the perfect time to reflect on the role education will play in shaping Welborne’s future.

We are specialists in rural land management and agents for both residential and commercial country property sales and lettings. Get in touch, we’d love to hear from you! info@moundsmere.co.uk 01256 389253

www.moundsmere.co.uk

A Community Built Around Learning

Welborne has been designed as a place where people can put down roots and thrive throughout every stage of life. Education is a vital part of that vision. As the community grows, plans include a nursery and a primary school, located at the heart of the Village Centre as part of the first phase of Welborne. In time, two further primary schools and a secondary school will open, ensuring that learning and opportunity are never far from home. Education, of course, is about much more than classrooms. It is about nurturing curiosity, building confidence and creating opportunities for young people to reach their potential. By placing learning at the centre of community life, Welborne is being designed to support future generations in the decades to come.

Opening Doors to Opportunity

Welborne is working in partnership with schools, colleges and universities to open up new pathways for learning, skills and future careers through career events, enrichment activities and work experience programmes.

Psalm 136: from v1-9

''O give thanks to the LORD...His mercy endures forever..Who by wisdom made the heavens...Who stretched out the earth above the waters...Who made great lights....the sun ruling the day, and moon and stars ruling the night. His mercy endures forever''

Plans are also progressing for a construction academy, providing skills training across a range of built environment and construction trades. In turn, this will support local employment prospects and contribute to the long-term economic success of Hampshire. Together, these education plans reflect a core ambition: to create a place where learning continues throughout life and opportunity is accessible to all.

Enjoying the Season

While pupils may be returning to school, there is still plenty of late summer left to enjoy at Welborne. The playground at Welborne Park is proving to be a very popular destination for families, while the woodland paths through Dashwood offer the perfect setting for a late-summer walk as the first signs of autumn begin to appear. And whether you’re celebrating a first day at a new school, catching up with friends or simply taking a break, The Corner Cafe opposite Welborne Park is the perfect place to pause for a coffee, lunch or ice cream!

OAKHANGER BEER FESTIVAL IS BACK — AND BIGGER THAN EVER!

IS THERE EVER A PERFECT TIME TO MOVE? The property market is shaped by countless factors, from interest rates and government policy to inflation, global events, and buyer confidence. Yet despite the headlines, one thing remains constant: no one can accurately predict what comes next. We optimistically hope that waiting a little longer will bring the perfect conditions to move but more often than not, that "perfect" moment never arrives. Instead, another event emerges, another headline dominates, and the cycle begins again.

The village’s favourite end of summer celebration returns for its fourth year on 4 and 5 September, bringing two unforgettable evenings of great beer, fantastic food and live music from 4pm to 10pm.

Property has always been a long-term investment rather than a short-term play. Markets naturally experience periods of growth, correction, and recovery, but over time they have repeatedly demonstrated resilience.

This year’s festival is set to be our best yet. We’ll be pouring an incredible selection of over 12 ales from every corner of the UK, alongside craft lagers, IPAs and refreshing ciders. Whether you’re a seasoned beer lover or just curious to try something new, you’ll find something to enjoy. Not into beer? We’ve got you covered with prosecco, wines, and a range of soft drinks and non-alcoholic options.

The people who tend to benefit most are not those who try to time the market perfectly, but those who make informed decisions when their own circumstances are right.

Foodies, get ready. Once again, we’re teaming up with our friends at The Hanger Freehouse to serve up mouth watering dishes made with locally sourced ingredients — the perfect pairing for an evening of great drinks and great company.

Timing the market is far less important than understanding your own goals. While nobody can control economic conditions, everyone can control their preparation, expectations, and decisions.

And the entertainment? Expect two nights packed with top tier live music. On Friday Local folk favourites Call Me Ishmael kick things off, followed by Blue Eyed Soul from Alton — guaranteed to get you dancing. Then on Saturday: Guitar wizard Tom Key opens the night, before Andrea Ojano brings the house down with rock covers and sing along classics. Plus, new for 2026, Strokes will be DJing both nights to keep the party atmosphere alive between acts. Tickets are on sale now at www.oakhangervillagehall.org.uk. For just £12.50, you’ll get entry, a souvenir pint glass and your first pint on us. All proceeds support Oakhanger Village Hall — a registered charity at the heart of our community for over 100 years. Every penny raised helps maintain and improve this vital space, which hosts coffee mornings, activity groups and beloved annual events like the May Fayre and Village Summer Show.

For buyers, that could mean stepping onto the ladder and beginning to build equity or a rental investment portfolio. For sellers, it means presenting a well-priced property that stands out, regardless of wider market sentiment.

In property, the best move is rarely about finding the perfect market it's about recognising the right moment for you. For expert property advice contact The Country House Company on: 01962 571189.

Winchester City Councillors' Report September

Help Protect the Itchen and Test from Chemical Pollution

rates available. Drivers will have the opportunity of taking out a monthly subscription to access further discounts.

There is a great deal in the news on the poor management (a mild description!) of our rivers by many of the water authorities. Many are failing in their duty of care and of their responsibility for the declining state of our rivers, particularly our very precious local chalk streams. But the water companies are not the only culprits! Recent research by Dr Ros Robinson at the University of Portsmouth found 121 chemicals in the Test and Itchen rivers. Of these 61 were from pharmaceuticals and personal care products and 60 from plant protection products. The chemicals originating from households, include cleaning products: soap, shampoo, washing-up liquid, dishwasher tablets, laundry detergent, fabric softeners, surface cleaners, oven cleaners, drain cleaners etc. Some of these products are actually labelled as being “Harmful to the Aquatic Environment with Long Lasting Effects”. How do household chemicals get into our rivers and groundwater?

Wastewater from houses, either from baths,

showers, toilet, washing machines, dishwashers or sinks goes down the house drain, either to a septic tank in rural areas or, where there is mains drainage, to a sewage treatment works. The treatment in all these systems are similar with the treated wastewater being discharged to a river, watercourse or a drainage field. Although our chalk rivers might look clear, they are not clean, they are polluted with a wide range of chemicals. Nearly all household chemicals, pharmaceuticals or personal care products are soluble in water and mostly impossible to extract and so pass into our watercourses. Which Cleaning Products should I use?

We can start by avoiding or reducing the use of

products that carry certain river toxic chemicals, especially those that carry the environmental hazard logo or state that they are harmful to aquatic life. It is difficult to specify which products to use but those least likely to be harmful to

households that are heated using oil as part of the government’s Boiler Upgrade Scheme. Through the grant, eligible homes could receive £9,000 to upgrade to a heat pump. More information is available on the government’s clean energy website. our aquatic environments, and to ourselves, are products made from natural ingredients. Manufacturers that use natural ingredients include Ecover, Method, Bio-D, Smol, Muck Munchers, Miniml, Ecozone, Tru Earth, Almat (ALDI) and The Green Co. Waitrose sell their own range of ECOlogical products which are labelled as safe for septic tanks. Avoid products with phosphate, parabens (anti-fungal and preservative agents), triclosan (anti-bacterial agent), synthetic fragrances, PFAS, ammonia, phthalates, stilbenes (whiteners), liquid polymers, chlorine or bleach. Please think very carefully what you pour down the drain, most of it will end up in our rivers and watercourses! A new charging operator take over part of

Winchester City Council's network, as demand for public Electric Vehicle (EV) charging reaches its highest level since they were introduced. There is a growing uptake of electric vehicles across the district and increasing use of public charging points. Since 2021, WCC has installed 82 charging points in public car parks across the district. The network includes a mix of fast and rapid chargers, as well as single and dual charging units, helping to support residents and visitors make the transition to electric transport. Mer, one of the council’s charging partners, has been taken over by charging network operator Be.EV. Over the coming months, users of Mer charge points will begin to see Be.EV branding, pricing structures, payment systems and customer support services introduced across the network. Be.EV says its pricing will remain highly competitive, with lower off-peak charging

MR MAC - SEPTEMBER NEWS I've been using Meta's Ray-Ban AI glasses for a while now, and I'm very impressed. While they're a great aid for anyone with a visual impairment, they can be used by anyone. Lenses come in clear or polarised, and prescription lenses are available too. A 3K HD camera handles photos and video, and you control everything with voice commands — including making and receiving calls, played through cleverly designed built-in speakers. Battery life runs up to 8 hours. They're available from Amazon for around £380. Many tech products have seen sharp price increases over the last couple of months, so I'd recommend considering refurbished options - there's a good chance of bagging a bargain. Sites like BackMarket (backmarket. co.uk) and Amazon Refurbished often offer great value. Instead of a brand-new iPhone 17 at £799, you could find an iPhone 15 starting below £330. It's not just iPhones either - iPads, laptops, and all-inone PCs are available too. Call me if you'd like some advice. Let me know by email if you would like to receive a copy of my monthly newsletter that includes tech news and tips as well as a regular Audible book recommendation and new streaming series to watch.

Financial planning tips for parents

Parenthood comes with so many responsibilities that juggling them all can be overwhelming. It’s no wonder long-term financial planning often takes a back seat. Here are five ways to get started.

1. Build a rainy-day fund You should typically have at least six months’ worth of essential expenditure in an easy-access savings account to help pay the bills if you suffer a period of unemployment or cover unexpected emergencies.

2. Create a financial safety net Income protection pays out a proportion of your salary if you suffer from a long-term illness and are unable to work. It’s also worth considering life insurance, which pays out a lump sum if you pass away during the policy term. You should also check you have an up-to-date will.

3. Invest in your kids’ future While you may wish to keep your money in a savings account because investing tends to involve more risk than holding cash, history shows that over long periods, the stock market tends to perform better. A great way to invest for children is through a Junior Individual Savings Account (JISA). Investment gains are tax free, and your child won’t be able to access the money until they reach age 18.

4. Focus on your pension and savings If you’ve taken time off work to look after your children, it’s important to look for ways to top up your pension savings. The first step is to protect your state pension. To qualify for the maximum amount, you need to have paid national insurance (NI) contributions for 35 years.

If you’re not working, you’ll get NI credits automatically as long as you claim child benefit and your child is under 12. You can still receive these credits if you’ve claimed child benefit but have opted out of receiving payments.1 You should also consider topping up your workplace or private pensions. Pensions are a cost-effective way of saving for retirement because of the tax relief you receive on personal pension contributions.

5. Get some financial advice By understanding you and what you want to achieve in life, a wealth manager can help you decide how much you should be investing – and where.

We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve xxxxx financial clarity and stability. The value of investments, and any income from them, can fall and you may get back less than you invested. This does not constitute tax or legal advice. Tax treatment depends on the individual circumstances of each client and may be subject to change in the future. You should always check the tax implications with an accountant or tax specialist. Trust and Pigs combine Hardship Funds to help local people The Trustees of the New Alresford Town Trust have decided to transfer its Hardship Fund monies to the Alresford Pigs, in order to consolidate the help available to local people and make it easier and more efficient to apply for support. The Town Trust's Hardship Fund, which was primarily built up in 2020 to support local people in short term financial difficulty, was not receiving many requests for support. The Trust has previously promoted and communicated the existence of its Fund, and has made grants of several hundred pounds each year, but found that local people mostly considered the Alresford Pigs to be the main source of individual support in the town. Rather than have smaller funds spread across the two organisations, it was clearly more sensible to consolidate all the available money into one fund, to be managed by the Pigs. As a result, the Trust has now transferred their Hardship funds, around £3,500, to the Pigs, who will ensure it is used as originally intended to help local people. Vanessa Andrews, Chair of the Town Trust, said “The Trust exists to make Alresford an even better place to live, work and visit. We are responsible for many of the things that people most love in our town - the beautiful Avenue, the vibrant markets and fairs in Broad Street, the heritage experiences at the Museum, Eel House and Soke Bridge, and of course the important Community Minibus. In addition to these core activities, some years ago we took on the Hardship Fund, and have managed to make a number of successful grants. But we've realised that people don't necessarily think of coming to the Trust, and are more likely to contact the Alresford Pigs, who have such a great reputation for providing both financial and practical help. We often work on joint projects with the Pigs, and we know what a fantastic job they do. So, to make it simpler for local people, we're delighted to transfer our funds to the Pigs, which means they will have even more resources to provide help and support.” Chair Pig, Frazer Budd, thanked the Town Trust, and said “I am most grateful for the

18

Trust’s support and their endorsement of the work that the Pigs undertake to both raise funds, and to distribute them to those in need. We are a small band of local people focused on local needs, and we are all very grateful for the help and generosity of our community. I would also like to express my sincere thanks to those who open their gardens to visitors in Broad Street. We are most fortunate to have received a substantial donation of some of the proceeds from this year’s event, which we will put to good use. We could not exist without your generosity.” The Pigs support a range of needs, from the local food bank, through individuals or families in crisis, to aspiring young people.

Pigs Mobility are on the move!

For the past 8 years the Alresford Pigs and the Alresford Men’s Shed have co-operated in the collection and storage of simple mobility aids, which are issued to members of the local community who are in need of such support. This built on the activity of the Alresford Pigs who had an existing stock of mobility scooters, and added the repair capabilities of the Men’s Shed to renovate simple walkers, such as Rollators, and wheelchairs. All this activity was carried out in several disused factories in the Dean, but now these buildings are to be demolished for new housing. The Men’s Shed will relocate to a new building in the ARC car park in September, and the current storage will be vacated. The Alresford Pigs have rented two garages from Winchester City Council to accommodate their mobility equipment, as well as other items

- such as aids for people recovering at home after Hospital visits, including Zimmer frames, commodes, toilet frames, etc., such equipment previously being available from the Red Cross locally. These garages will also house the remaining few mobility scooters as they become available. Once the new Men’s Shed building is completed, the Pigs are planning to keep a small stock of the simple mobility aids at the Men’s Shed, so that it is available to residents on weekdays, by visiting the new Shed building. But for Hospital type aids, and mobility scooters, as well as standard walkers and wheelchairs, from September it will be best to contact the Alresford Pigs direct, via email to info@Alresfordpigs.org.uk or to leave a message by phone on the Alresford Pigs answering machine, on 01962 658961. The mobility team can also be contacted directly by using the contact form on our website (alresfordpigs.org.uk/contact-us/) and selecting the Mobility Request option with details of your needs. If you have some unused or surplus mobility equipment you would like to donate to the Pigs, so that it can be re-issued to other members for the local community, please also send a message as above, and we will arrange to collect it. Please remember, if you know of anyone who needs our help, we are only a phone call, or email away. Website: www.alrefordpigs.org.uk Email: info@alresfordpigs.org.uk Helpline: 01962 658961

The Hampshire Fair runs an annual series of events and talks to raise money for three local grassroots charities. Its main event is a shopping fair, held this year at The Grange in Northington on Wednesday 23 September. In a large marquee set in The Grange’s beautiful parkland over 70 handpicked stalls, 20 of them new to the fair this year, will sell fashion, food, homewares and jewellery. Sustenance will be in the form of a café, run by Becka Cooper, along with Grange vineyard wine from their vintage Land Rover. Parking is free and plentiful, and the views are outstanding – perhaps factor in a parkland walk before or after shopping. Money raised at all Hampshire Fair events goes to three small charities, each of which is supported for a minimum of two years. Current charities are The Royal Southampton Yacht Club Trust, which gets young people, principally young carers, out on the water and to social events. Kids on Track Andover empowers young people through activity camps, mentoring, trips and visits. The Grange Festival: Illuminating Creative Pathways brings hundreds of schoolchildren to live opera each year, as well as providing paid roles both on stage and behind the scenes. The Hampshire Fair at The Grange, Northington will take place on Wednesday 23 September from 9.30am–4pm. There will be plentiful free parking, food and drink will be available from a vintage Grange Vineyard Land Rover and in a cafe run by infamous local caterer Becka Cooper. King Alfred Autumn Country Bus Day

oKAB was formed in 1985 to assist James Freeman in the preservation of two KAMS buses that he had purchased - Tiger Cub 104 (WCG 104) and Atlantean 591 (HOR 591E - since scrapped but parts used to help restore HOR 592E). Since then further ex-KAMS buses and coaches have been rescued, including two repatriated from the USA. FoKAB aims to maintain 16 vehicles in a roadworthy condition.

In 2000 we became a Registered Charity, rather than just a group of enthusiasts preserving buses and coaches. Anyone who has travelled on our vehicles at our running days or at other events will have noticed, even the crews try to wear the correct uniform of the 1960s. Our aims are eventually to house all our vehicles together in a living museum in Hampshire to assist in educating the public in the role of transport in Winchester and in the surrounding district. We of course already recreate the past when we hold our Running Days and show our vehicles at many local events.

FoKAB's membership now stands at about 200 people. One may ask why there still so much interest in a bus company of such relatively small size that has been gone for nearly fifty years? The answer lies in the nature of King Alfred Motor Services (R. Chisnell & Sons Ltd) itself. King Alfred was one of the few privately owned bus companies to run a municipal service. KAMS was proudly independent, with the statue of King Alfred on the green side panels of its buses to add that ultimate distinction. It is also down to the enthusiasm of members to keep the memory of KAMS alive and protect part of Winchester's great heritage.

22

Being a charity can have many advantages. We benefit strongly from the Gift Aid scheme where we are able to reclaim the income tax paid on donations. In 2004, Hampshire County Council made a small grant towards the restoration of JAA 708. As we have a unique collection comprising all known surviving ex-KAMS buses and coaches, our next aim is to attain museum status. At our 2004 Running Day we launched our new mobile information unit to explain the work of FoKAB and the history of KAMS. Preserving the past takes both time and money. This is where you can help by becoming a member or by making a donation! We hold regular working sessions on the vehicles near Winchester on Tuesday afternoon and evenings and all day Saturday. To become a member or make a donation visit: www.kingalfredbuses. org.uk

OUR NEXT EVENT

King Alfred Autumn Country Bus Day Sunday 13 September 2026 As part of the Heritage Open Days scheme

managed locally by the Hampshire History Trust, FoKAB's theme for this autumn is "rides out into the country", taking passengers over the spectacular chalk downs to the east of the city. There will be regular departures all day from St Catherine's Park & Ride site, where activities will be centred. There will be a frequent shuttle service all day between the Broadway and St Catherine's. There is a specific reason for being based at St Catherine's Park & Ride, as we have designed the day to be unaffected by potential congestion expected around the north and west of the city because of the weekend closure of junction 9 of the M3 Motorway between 11 and 14 September.

Regular free rides will operate:

• Hazeley Down to Owslebury, Twyford and Colden Common. • Fairdown to Morn Hill for the Science Centre. • Tichborne Down to Alresford with its pretty streets and the Watercress Line station. • Cheesefoot Head to Cheriton passing the Flower Pots Inn. You can pre-order a programme for £7 (inc. UK postage) by visiting our online store, which will be delivered when printed in early September.

NATIONAL PARK WATERWAYS, ICONIC RIVERS IN NEED OF PROTECTION National Parks encompass some of the most biodiverse and important rivers in the country. They are home to a huge variety of wildlife, including rare species such as water vole, beaver, bittern, eel and salmon. They provide drinking water, support natural flood management, help tackle climate change, and are, of course, much valued by people as places for recreation and relaxation.

for species such as water-crow foot, water star-wort. The silt-free riverbeds are vital for freshwater fish species like brown trout as the gaps in the gravel are perfect for fertilised eggs to develop. Despite being rare and precious, many chalk streams are in poor condition thanks to over abstraction – the removal of water from a natural source for a variety of uses such as drinking water. When too much water is removed from a river the flow rate slows leading to more silt building up and degrading vital habitats for species, pollutants become more concentrated and when combined with the effects of climate change water temperatures increase and become unsuitable for the wildlife in the water. National Parks should offer the highest level of protection to rivers however water companies and regulators have largely neglected and ignored National Park status, and it is time that they recognise this international nature designation. At Campaign for National Parks we’re calling for strong clean water protections, establish legally binding water quality standards, improve storm overflow management, and set high ecological targets for all freshwater within National Parks.

The chalk streams in the South Downs National Park are a clear example of iconic waterways. The chalk streams here are varied, ranging from the River Itchen flowing through Winchester all the way to the most natural and undisturbed small chalk scarp streams. They all share the common characteristics of a low and constant flow which rarely deviates from 10°C, creating the perfect environment

Embley’s sailing programme is embarking on an exciting new chapter with the arrival of a beautifully restored Scampi 30 yacht that will expand opportunities for students and strengthen the school's growing keelboat fleet. For several years, sailing has been a distinctive part of life at Embley with the benefits to students extending well beyond the water, including honing life skills and building resilience while developing a sense of adventure. As students learn to navigate the winds and waves, they also navigate challenges and build confidence on and off the water. The addition the Scampi 30 marks a significant investment in the future of the programme. Over coming years, the new yacht will introduce students to cruising, seamanship, adventure sailing and life on the water, broadening the experiences available to young sailors. Sailing opportunities begin early at Embley. Prep pupils can gain their RYA 1 dinghy qualifications, while sailing is offered as a timetabled sport option for Senior School students from Easter through to October with more than 120 students taking to the water each month. A key focus of the programme is the development of character and leadership. Through practical, hands-on experiences, students learn perseverance, teamwork and responsibility; qualities that are invaluable in all aspects of life. Whether it's working together to rig a boat or strategising during a race, teamwork is at the heart of sailing. Students develop essential communication and interpersonal skills, learning to trust and rely on one another. Embley sailors regularly complete in national and international events including the Round the Island Race and the British Schools Dinghy Racing Championships. Several students have gone on to represent Great Britain at the Youth World Championships. Embley’s keelboat programme operates out of the Royal Lymington Yacht Club, which provides access to outstanding facilities and sailing waters while supporting the school’s delivery of sailing activities. This partnership enables students to gain experience in a wide range of conditions and disciplines, from competitive racing to longer cruising adventures. Sailing also helps students build a deeper connection with the natural environment and a sense of stewardship and responsibility towards the sea, laying the foundation for a lifelong commitment to environmental conservation. Embley’s resident marine biologist and the boats also serve as platforms for scientific inquiry, enriching students’ learning experiences.

EDUCATION

HONOURING THE PAST, INVESTING IN THE FUTURE: ROPLEY CHURCH OF ENGLAND PRIMARY SCHOOL CELEBRATES 200 YEARS OF COMMUNITY

In October 2026, Ropley Church of England Primary School will celebrate an extraordinary milestone: 200 years at the heart of the Ropley community. Founded in 1826 by Reverend Samuel Maddock, the school was established to meet the educational needs of local children and families. At a time when many youngsters faced a long walk to attend school in what is now Four Marks, Reverend Maddock recognised the importance of providing education within the village itself. A school was opened on Petersfield Road, with William Faichen appointed as its first Headteacher. For two centuries, the school's story has been closely intertwined with that of the village. When the original school building was destroyed by fire in 1869, the community rallied together to ensure education could continue. Later that year, the school reopened on its current Church Street site, demonstrating the determination of local people to preserve an important village institution. From an original intake of around 40 pupils, Ropley CE Primary School has grown and evolved alongside the community it serves. Additional classrooms were built throughout the 1960s, 1970s and 1990s, and in 2025 the school expanded to seven classrooms. Today, 185 children

attend the school, benefiting from a modern education while remaining connected to the values and traditions that have shaped generations of local families. As the school enters its bicentenary year, one value stands above all others: Community. The anniversary celebrations are not simply about looking back at history but about recognising the role the school continues to play in village life and giving back to the people who have supported it for 200 years.

As part of this commitment, pupils have pledged to complete 200 hours of community service, supporting environmental projects across the village. Children have taken part in litter-picking initiatives along Hale Close, Vicarage Lane, Church Street and Berry Hill, helping to care for the place they are proud to call home. The school has also continued its active involvement in village events, including the popular Ropley Pram Race, helping to raise funds for local causes and strengthen connections between generations. Partnerships with organisations such as the Ropley Horticultural Society and the Ropley Society, alongside the school's long-standing relationship with Reverend Amber and the Benefice of Ropley, Bishop's Sutton and West Tisted, demonstrate the collaborative spirit that has sustained the school throughout its history. Many residents will have noticed recent improvements to the school grounds, including the rebuilding of the front wall, the management of overhanging trees and the restoration of boundary hedges. These projects reflect a shared sense of pride in the school and a commitment to ensuring it remains a welcoming and valued part of the village landscape. As a small village school preparing to enter its third century, Ropley CE Primary School remains ambitious for the future. The school is inviting former pupils, local residents and businesses to help preserve and enhance this important community asset for generations to come. Whether through sponsorship, donations, practical support or simply sharing memories of school life, every contribution will help strengthen the school's legacy. Join the Celebration - Ropley Church of England Primary School will officially celebrate its 200th anniversary on 1 October 2026. As the school marks two centuries of educating local children, it also celebrates something equally important: the community that has supported, shaped and sustained it every step of the way. Autumn Foraging:

Discovering Nature's Seasonal Harvest

A

s the days grow shorter and the air takes on a crisp edge, autumn offers one of the most rewarding seasons for foraging. Hedgerows, woodland edges, and country lanes become rich with wild foods that have sustained people for generations. From juicy blackberries to vibrant rosehips, the countryside provides an abundance of nutritious ingredients waiting to be discovered. Foraging is not only a wonderful way to connect with nature but also an opportunity to appreciate the changing seasons while gathering fresh, free produce. One of autumn's most familiar treasures is the blackberry. Found in hedgerows, woodland clearings, and along footpaths, blackberries are usually at their best from late August through September, although the season can extend into October depending on the weather. The deep purple fruits are packed with vitamin C, fibre, and antioxidants. Sweet with a slight tartness, they are perfect for pies, crumbles, jams, syrups, and homemade cordials. Many experienced foragers follow the old tradition of avoiding blackberries after Michaelmas, as folklore suggests the devil cursed them after this date. In reality, later berries are often overripe or affected by mould and insects, making earlier harvests the better choice. Elderberries are another valuable autumn crop. These small, dark berries grow in large clusters on elder trees and ripen during late summer and early autumn. Unlike blackberries, elderberries should never be eaten raw in large quantities, as they contain compounds that can cause stomach upset. Cooking removes these compounds, making the berries ideal for syrups, jams, wines, and traditional remedies. Elderberry syrup has long been used as a comforting winter drink and is

32

valued for its rich flavour and high levels of antioxidants and vitamin C. As autumn progresses, hazelnuts begin to ripen beneath deciduous trees and within hedgerows. The nuts are ready when their green outer husks begin to split and the shells turn brown. Fresh hazelnuts have a mild, creamy flavour, while drying them for several weeks develops a richer taste. Hazelnuts are an excellent source of healthy fats, protein, vitamin E, and minerals such as magnesium. They can be roasted for snacks, added to baking, blended into nut butter, or sprinkled over salads and desserts. When collecting hazelnuts, it is important to leave plenty behind for wildlife, particularly squirrels, dormice, and woodland birds that rely on them as a vital food source. Sloes, the small blue-black fruits of the blackthorn bush, are another classic autumn find. They resemble tiny plums and are famously sharp and astringent when freshly picked. Traditionally, sloes are harvested after the first frost, although many modern foragers freeze them overnight to achieve the same effect. Their intense flavour softens during steeping, making them the key ingredient in the much-loved homemade sloe gin. They can also be transformed into jams, chutneys, and fruit preserves that balance their tartness with sugar and spices.

Bright red rosehips add vivid colour to hedgerows long after summer flowers have faded. These fruits develop on wild roses and are usually ready from September onwards. Rosehips are exceptionally rich in vitamin C and have been used for centuries in syrups, teas, and preserves. During the Second World War, rosehip syrup became an important nutritional supplement in Britain when citrus fruits were scarce. When preparing rosehips, care must be taken to remove the fine hairs surrounding the seeds, as they can irritate the mouth and digestive system. Once prepared, rosehips produce delicious jellies and warming herbal infusions. Responsible foraging is essential to protect both wildlife and the environment. Always make certain that you have correctly identified any plant before harvesting, and never eat anything unless you are completely confident of its identity. Only collect from areas free from pollution, avoid private land without permission, and harvest sustainably by taking only what you need. Leaving plenty behind ensures that birds, mammals, and insects can continue to benefit from nature's seasonal bounty. Autumn foraging is about far more than collecting food. It encourages people to slow down, observe the landscape, and develop a deeper appreciation for the natural world. Whether filling a basket with blackberries for a family crumble, gathering elderberries for winter syrup, cracking freshly roasted hazelnuts, infusing sloes for festive drinks, or making fragrant rosehip jelly, every harvest reflects the richness of the season. With knowledge, care, and respect for nature, autumn foraging becomes a rewarding tradition that celebrates the countryside's generous gifts year after year.

Bee Afraid, Bee Very Afraid (Part2 )

© Lucia Foster-Found 2026 | www.luciafosterfound.com | e @luciafosterfound Continued from August 2026 “I don’t know what to say. They’re not bothering me. There are lots of them here, but they’re very benign. I’m not even wearing a bee suit. My grandfather used to keep bees and never wore any protective gear.” I couldn’t tell if there was a hint of smugness in his voice, but I had my suspicions. Deciding to sit it out until my busy little burglars lost interest and vacated the awning, I reached for my current book – The Hunger Games. When my daughter first suggested I read a story about children killing each other for the entertainment of others, I was horrified. But she’s a terrier, my daughter, and she’d already bought the books with her hard-earned Australian dollars. They arrived; not reading them meant boarding the great ship “Mummy Guilt”, seasick amidst towering waves of remorse every time I looked at the damned things stacked on the table. My child is a demon. She’s in my brain like a parasitic fungus, pushing the buttons, controlling me like one of those dressage riders – an unseen squeeze of her knees and Mummy was doing the Hunger Games extended trot. She knows me better than I know myself. She was, of course, absolutely right. I loved it. But Mummy was having trouble concentrating on the children-killingchildren book because the buzzing outside was getting louder. Oh no. Actually, it wasn’t. It was coming from inside, which is why it was louder. The sly, sneaky, underhand tiny miracles of nature had gotten into the caravan. One landed on the page I was reading and wandered about with a you-canrun-but-you-can’t-hide insouciance. I dropped Katniss and Co. and ran for it. I burst out of the caravan and through the buzzing awning to the door. “Gosh and darn it,” (or something similar) I muttered as I fumbled with the zip, making a large enough opening to fall through, landing in a heap by my Darling and his flying entourage. “Ah, you’ve decided to come out. Good for you. Have you switched off…” Paul’s voice tailed off as I struggled to my feet and sprinted away across the meadow to the car, a scream emerging from my chest. I made it to the vehicle and shut myself in, contemplating driving away to the next village. When the passenger door opened, I literally jumped, banging my thighs against the underside of the steering wheel.

38

“Are you alright?” Paul got in and looked at me with real concern on his face... and several bees on his shirt. “Gosh and darn it!” (or something similar) I yelled. Flinging the car door open, I was off again. Sprinting on my fifty-year-old legs, which were taken by surprise at this sudden activity, I ran out of the gate and into the road. The road was remarkably bee-free, probably because they were all enjoying the impromptu festival of mead in the meadow. The same, however, could not be said of motor vehicles. Whilst I didn’t die from multiple bee stings that day – or any other day for that matter – I was nearly hit by a passing bus. I mean, what were the odds? Rural buses were as rare as finding something you actually liked, in your size, in a clearance sale. I leapt back onto the verge as the great red thing passed just in front of my nose, the waft of air sending my hair flying back off my face as I contemplated my mortality. Paul was both pleased and surprised when I returned to the Theatrum Apium. The bees, sensing I’d had a brush with real death and no longer feared them, lost interest in terrorising me. I was no fun anymore. They turned their attention to getting as much of their honey back as possible before we tried to turn it into booze. However, all that work: the sterilising, the decanting, the running, the screaming? And all the efforts from the little bees to make the magical, everlasting elixir in the first place? All for nought. The stuff we made – you couldn’t call it mead – was undrinkable. Because, it seems, you have to use high-grade honey to make mead, and the honey we’d been given was somehow contaminated. Hey ho. At some future time, we’ll have another stab at mead making à la BBC Good Food. Maybe on a smaller, more manageable scale that doesn’t involve catering-sized saucepans, a bucket of honey and close proximity to half a million bees. Bee fear is called melissophobia. Who knew? One would reasonably assume it meant a fear of people called Melissa, but it seems not. And actually, I’ve never met anyone called Melissa. Well, whatever it’s called, I no longer have it. My extreme terror whilst cooped up with bees in a caravan and my neardeath-by-bus experience seem to have cancelled each other out. I no longer dread the buzz from our small saviours of the planet; there are worse things than a bee sting or two.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Buttermilk Fried Chicken with Homemade Piri Piri Sauce Bring the taste of summer to your table with this crispy Buttermilk Fried Chicken, served with a homemade Piri Piri Sauce, created by Ideal Collection’s Group Executive Chef, Matt Whitfield – the perfect dish for making the most of the summer season.

INGREDIENTS

METHOD

FOR THE CHICKEN:

FOR THE SAUCE:

• 8 Chicken Thighs, Deboned & Skinned • 400g Buttermilk • 4 Tbsp Garlic Powder • 4 Tbsp Dried Mixed Herbs • 400g Gluten-Free Flour • 100g Gluten-Free • Breadcrumbs

For The Sauce:

• 5 Roasted Red Peppers • 10 Red Chillies • 2 Tbsp Paprika • 1 Tbsp Chilli Powder • 100ml Red Wine Vinegar • 4 Garlic Cloves • 3 Shallots (Echalion) • 300ml Veg Oil • Juice Of 2 Lemons • Salt/Pepper

Peel the shallots and garlic, then blend all the remaining ingredients together to make a rough pulp. Place into a pan and cook on a low heat for 20-30 min. Once cooked re-blend the pulp into a smooth sauce and pass through a fine sieve. Season with salt and pepper as required.

FOR THE CHICKEN:

Mix the buttermilk, garlic and herbs together in a bowl, place the chicken in the mix and leave in a fridge overnight. In a separate bowl mix together the gluten-free flour and glutenfree breadcrumbs. Remove the chicken from the butter milk mixture and cover with the flour, making sure it is really roughed up to make extra crispy. Fry the chicken in a deep fat fryer at 180c for 5 mins. Lift from the oil for 2 min and repeat this process 3-4 times. The coating will go crispy and golden brown. Temperature probe the centre of the chicken and check it is above 75c to be cooked through. Place the prepared sauce on the bottom of a serving bowl and top with the chicken.

This year, we have something new and exciting coming to our high field. Let the story begin… Frederick was accidentally apprenticed to pirates as a child until his 21st birthday. On that birthday, he believed he would be free to leave the ship and dedicate his life to the destruction of piracy. However, the pirate king soon realised that Frederick's birthday falls on February 29, a leap year. Frederick begins to question his fate: will he be forced to work on the king's ship until he is 84? And will his sweetheart wait for him? Join Illyria for an evening filled with glittering wit and glorious music, performed by a talented cast of six actors and singers, accompanied by a full orchestra. Please bring your own low-back seating and picnic blankets. Doors open Saturday 19 September at High Field, Itchen Valley Country Park, Allington Lane, SO30 3HQ from 2.30pm, performance starts at 3pm. Car parking charges apply. The Plague Obelisk Winchester City Centre

Many of us may have walked past this Georgian monument and not even given it a second glance, but an interesting and sad story lies behind its creation.

A year after the plague had abated, a feast was held in August in St John’s House, Winchester, to raise money for the widows and orphans left in its wake. It was the start of the Society of Natives, which continued to raise money for charity for 300 years. At the feast 63 men each contributed 1s.6d. and sat down to a hearty meal, accompanied by music from Thomas and John Vinn, but it only raised enough money to apprentice one orphan, Austin Winnall (Barbara Carpenter Turner, HRO, 120M94W/D96)

At a time when the world is being ravaged by the Covid-19 coronavirus, it is interesting to look back at previous diseases that have changed the world order. A graphic idea of what was involved can be found in Defoe’s A Journal of the Plague Year, which recounts the “pestilence” of 1665-6, although it was not published until 1720. No-one is sure whether the book is fiction or was based on a diary of an uncle, Henry Foe. There are many passages in the book which, with a slight change of wording, could have been written today, such as: ‘As for my little family, having thus, as I have said, laid in a store of bread, butter, cheese, and beer, I took my friend and physician’s advice and locked myself up, and my family, and resolved to suffer the hardship of living a few months without flesh-meat, rather than purchase it at the hazard of our lives.’ Defoe’s Journal describes measures taken in 1665-6 to limit the infection, by locking victims into their houses, with squads of officials to police the streets and remove the dead – examiners, searchers, watchmen and chirurgeons (barber surgeons). In the early stages of the disease the Privy Council commanded the Royal College of Physicians to give the best medical advice. With some optimism, a 44-page booklet Certain Necessary Directions for the Cure of the Plague (we would now say quack cures) and methods for limiting infection from “effluvia” was rushed out in a fortnight and handed out free. A few years later, a scientific account of the great plague was written by Dr Nathaniel Hodges, one of the few physicians who did not flee the capital. A translation of 1720 was entitled Loimologia, or An Historical Account. With precautionary Directions against the like Contagion. In the same volume was included An Essay on the Different Causes of Pestilential Disease, though it was to be 200 years before anyone identified the bacterium Yersinia pestis.

Some people saw the plague as a message from God, a warning about the consequences of sin, and prayed fervently for forgiveness, as explored later in books like the Rev Thomas Vincent’s God’s Terrible Voice in the City. Others people resorted to desperate cures sold by unscrupulous quacks, whilst Charles II and his court simply moved out of the capital and took up residence in Oxford. In Hampshire, the most tangible reminder of the great plague is a monument that stands beside the county council headquarters in Winchester. It is on the site of a market cross where, during the plague, people collected goods and left money in payment. Inscriptions tell its story. Inscription on the monument THE SOCIETY OF NATIVES Was founded On the 26th of August 1669 For the relief of THE WIDOWS AND ORPHANS Of their Fellow Citizens Who died in the great Plague Its funds are entirely derived from VOLUNTARY CONTRIBUTIONS And are annually appropriated To the charitable purpose of APPRENTICING POOR CHILDREN

Sir Henry Tichborne contributed 10s, venison and “half a buck”, whilst the warden of Winchester College, Dr William Burt, chipped in with a hogshead of beer. Later, the feast came to be held every year and covered two days. In 1731, for example, there were than 52 different dishes on offer. The other great pestilence came too early for many formal records. This was the Black Death, which entered Hampshire ports in about 1348. Its tide can be traced in the record. About 80 per cent of people died in Titchfield, which was then a working port on the river Meon. In Bishop's Waltham it was 65 percent and in the small hamlet of Quob, near Wickham, not a single person survived. As detailed in The Black Death in Hampshire by Tom James (1999, Hampshire Record Office, ISBN, 1-85975-317-5), many other settlements in the county were so weakened that they eventually disappeared, like Abbotstone, Faccombe Netherton and many others on the list of some 90 “deserted medieval villages” recognised by archaeologists. The population of Southampton may have halved, but recovered in the following century. Winchester was similarly affected, but the

collapse precipitated a dramatic downturn. Its population took 500 years to recover. Most epidemics leave their traces. In 1918, when war had claimed many lives it was Spanish ‘flu that came along and added to the misery. One of the victims was William Walker, the diver who had worked for years in murky waters to save Winchester Cathedral, only to die at the early age of 51. COMMUNITY

THIS SUMMER'S DROUGHT SHOWS HOW IMPORTANT IT IS WE RECLAIM CONTROL OF OUR WATER INDUSTRY Throughout this incredibly dry summer, which has now reached drought conditions, one of the biggest concerns on many people’s minds is what we can do to protect our environment and water supplies. It’s sad to see that after decades of scientists and experts warning how these extreme climate conditions would become more frequent, we now have political leaders like Kemi Badenoch downplaying the problem and calling to scrap plans to solve the climate crisis. That attitude is dangerous. This drought has impacted our health facilities and schools, many of which lack adequate cooling systems. It’s caused immense pain to farmers who have lost crops and income, and there are now warnings that if droughts like this persist across Europe, Britain’s food supply will be at increased risk. My thanks go out to fire service personnel across the country who will be on high alert and responding to fires under really tough conditions. Solving a challenge like this requires many solutions across the economy, but one of the key industries we need to get a grip of is our water. New data has been revealed showing that Southern Water has lost over 37 billion litres of water due to leaks in 2024/2025. That’s the equivalent of over 40 Olympic-sized swimming pools every day. This huge problem with leaks is on top of the devastating scale of environmental damage in the Winchester area caused by Southern Water sewage dumping into chalk streams like the River Itchen and local waterways. A staggering 1139 hours of sewage dumping took place last year in the Winchester area alone, across 126 separate spills. Southern Water has been getting away with their grossly negligent handling of our water infrastructure for far too long - now these figures prove it. The Prime Minister needs to make fixing our broken water industry a top priority. Local residents from Winchester and across the Meon Valley have had their water bills jacked up by almost 50% this past year, their beautiful rivers polluted by sewage and now a hosepipe ban. On top of all this, Southern Water has only managed to deal with a miniscule fraction of the leaks. That is dreadful. It’s time to put an end to the Great Sewage Cover-Up by forcing water companies to report the volume, not just the duration, of sewage spills. Implement an immediate, legally binding ban on all water company executive bonuses, free from loopholes. We should put the water companies into special administration immediately, permanently restructuring them as mutuals, run for the benefit of their customers. Under that model, infrastructure investments would be made a top priority for water companies, with bills reinvested into stopping leaks and preventing sewage dumping.

JACKIE'S COUNTY CORNER FOR SEPTEMBER It is said that “Everything comes to [s]he who waits…” It is never more true than when trying to claim for a new footpath or cycleway! In 2017, a resident ‘made a claim’ for two new footpaths, immediately north of the Cart & Horses in Kings Worthy in the Itchen Valley Division. The two paths were on the site of an old house, where residents of all generations had made the woods and grassland part of their daily walk, whether exercising a dog, walking to school or building a pump track - or just taking a short cut between Pub and park. So it was a pleasant surprise to receive notice it had reached the top of the queue for a consideration of the claim. Thank you to the residents who completed forms in 2017but importantly, if you recall walking in the wood or the field since 2017, please let me know and we’ll send you the form or put you in touch with someone who can help you. Stagecoach buses cross the Itchen Valley Division, but still many people miss out on a frequent and reliable bus service they can depend on. A local Parish Councillor and I have met with Stagecoach bosses to ask how they can help you to catch a bus rather than take the car, especially if you live in a rural area, where the population is sparse. I wanted to talk with Stagecoach about several matters from across the whole division. The conversation included providing capacity for school children catching the 6 bus to Henry Beaufort school now the school bus can’t be used by many of the children. Stagecoach are sympathetic but their timetable and Winchester congestion makes it virtually impractical for services to be on time. The 64 bus flies down the A31 into the King Alfred end of the city. Requests to divert to the 67 route just won’t work because of the congestion of the route into Winchester. Meanwhile, suspending the A31 bus stop has led to several families without a service: another subject for Stagecoach. The KB1 has cheap fares continuing into September and by the time you read this, the 75 service is being improved too. This brings me to the congestion resulting from the weekend closures of the M3 Jn 9. I’m sure that we are all grateful to the National Highways team for keeping us well informed about the main road closures at night or some weekends. But closures create rat-runs which create delays which create congestion - and often lead to accidents. Sutton Scotney, Easton and the Worthys were particularly affected in the late July closures. Spitfire Link remains variable, as does Easton lane. We are all paying the price of a convenient motorway right in our midst. NH are reviewing the first weekend’s events to see if more can be done in future.

And finally, we need to abolish the toothless regulator Ofwat and replace it with a powerful new Clean Water Authority with statutory powers to enforce strict environmental standards and crack down on repeat offenders.

So neighbouring County Councillors and I have asked for your local knowledge and understanding to be taken into account when future closures are agreed between HCC and National Highways. If you have views, there’s still time to let me know: the work won’t be complete until 2028!

If there are any issues you’d like to get in touch with me about, please contact me at: danny.chambers.mp@parliament.uk

South Downs National Park’s new Local Plan moves another step forward More than 2,700 representations on the South Downs National Park’s new Local Plan are currently being analysed in preparation for the next important stages of the planning process. The latest consultation on the new South Downs Local Plan closed on 23 June, with 2,700 comments submitted from around 1,300 people and organisations. All representations received during the consultation, together with supporting evidence and submission documents, have been registered and are now being reviewed by officers at the National Park Authority. The new Local Plan will guide how and where development takes place in the National Park over the next two decades, replacing the current Local Plan adopted in 2019. The goal of the Local Plan is to address vital issues such as the need for affordable housing, quality development, restoring nature, climate action, a flourishing rural economy and helping local communities thrive. In November and December this year, the National Park’s Planning Committee and the Full Authority will consider the outcomes of the consultation, including any proposed modifications to address the representations and any other changes since the Local Plan was agreed last March. Subject to this consideration, the new Local Plan, together with any proposed modifications and the latest consultation representations, will then be submitted to the Planning Inspectorate for independent examination and published on the National Park Authority’s website. Claire Tester, Head of Strategic Planning for the South Downs National Park Authority, said:

“This is such an important plan for the future of this wonderful National Park and I’d like to thank each and every person who has responded so far to the consultations. “One of the key concerns from the community that came up in our latest consultation was that the South Downs Local Plan includes more proposed housing and other development given that this is a National Park. “We have statutory purposes to conserve and enhance the natural beauty, wildlife and cultural heritage of the area, and to help people understand and appreciate those assets. However, we also have a statutory duty to foster the economic and social wellbeing of our communities. “The South Downs is Britain’s most populated National Park with more than 113,000 residents, living in one of the four towns and smaller villages and settlements, and we have nearly 6,000 businesses. “Therefore, it’s important we plan for the future and the continued vitality of these towns and villages, supporting local facilities and ensuring there are suitable homes, particularly affordable homes for local communities. “This is a plan about innovative and diligent placemaking, so with appropriate, sustainable growth comes significant wider benefits for people, including health and wellbeing, habitat creation for wildlife, community infrastructure, jobs and climate action.” During the latest consultation, concerns were also raised about the addition of new sites for potential development, as well as questions over significant changes to sites that were previously consulted on. Claire said: “It’s important that we listen to the feedback received at each consultation stage. This includes feedback from some of our partner councils that the Local Plan should do more to address housing needs in the area. Following

a consultation in early 2025 the National Park Authority reviewed all the existing sites and additional ones submitted during that consultation and this led to new sites being added to the Local Plan consulted on this spring. “The submission of new sites at all stages of plan preparation is a recognised part of the planmaking process. “Comments made on all these proposed sites will be considered by the Authority prior to submission of the Local Plan and by the Inspector during the examination.” The Planning Inspectorate are expecting around 100 Local Plans from across the country to be submitted for independent examination before 31 December 2026. This means there may be a delay before the examination hearings can take place. By January next year, the National Park Authority expects to receive confirmation of the appointed Inspector(s) and dates for examination hearings. Claire added: “All those who told us that they wanted to be heard at the examination hearings will be contacted in advance of these hearing dates and given further guidance on how to participate. Should the Inspector be minded to recommend modifications to the Local Plan, there will be a further six-week consultation on these modifications during the examination.” After completing all the required stages, it’s hoped that the new Local Plan will be adopted in 2027. From then on, all planning applications will be considered against policies in the new Local Plan.

Sun Hill Infants School - New sand pit and mud kitchen

On Saturday 3 October Alresford Rotary will again be juicing apples at The Flowerpots Inn, Cheriton from 12 noon. If you have more apples than you know what to do with, bring them along and we will juice them for you without charge so that you can take away some of the juice for your own use and enable us to sell some of the juice for good causes. Please bring along your clean apples by 3.30pm. This event takes place on the day after Alresford Rotary’s 40th “birthday” and to help us celebrate we’re looking forward to a guest appearance from The Mayor of Winchester, Cllr. Jamie Scott!

Alresford Rotary created a new pond area for Sun Hill Infants school in 2013 since when it has helped to maintain the area and is delighted that the school fully uses this resource for environmental and other outdoor education purposes, aligning very well with Rotary’s own community and environmental work.

Earlier this year the Head, Helen Wilson, and the Year R Teacher & SEND Co-ordinator, Jo Maccabee, asked Alresford Rotary if it could help build the children a sandpit and mud kitchen area. On a hot August morning a small hedge area was removed and filled with bark chippings to form the area for the mud kitchen, and a play pagoda in the playground made an excellent base for the sand pit with Rotary constructing new sides, fitting a lining and filling it with two large bags of children’s play sand, topped off with a tarpaulin cover. After the morning’s work in the heat, Helen Wilson messaged to say ‘I just went up to school to see you all and you'd finished! The sand pit and mud kitchen areas look amazing. I was so excited as I know the children will gain so much from what you've done. Thank you so much for coming to do this today’.

Can you help?

great assets to their local communities and is delighted to support them and also to receive support from them. One example of that is the support that many of the local schools have over the years given to the Rotary Wessex Christmas shoebox scheme for disadvantaged and displaced children in Eastern Europe during the first half of the winter term. Everyone can take part, whether you’re still at school or those days are long past! Have a look at https://wessexrotaryshoebox.org. uk/ or contact wjrp@hotmail.co.uk and we can provide the flatpack boxes and any further information required. Alresford Rotary’s school projects have made a difference to local children’s school experience. Will you and your families make a difference to the lives of children living in less fortunate circumstances?

Apple Juicing The work at the Infants school completes a series of school environmental and learning projects at Perins School, Sun Hill Junior School, The Perins Station and Sun Hill preschool, as well as at Sun Hill Infants. Alresford Rotary believes that the Alresford schools (and those in the local mid Hampshire villages) are

Although writing this with the temperature in mid-August hovering at about 30c, planning and preparation is already under way for Alresford’s Bonfire and Fireworks night on 6 November. Please let us know if you’d like to help that evening. Many hands make lighter work! If you’re interested in supporting Alresford Rotary’s activities, regularly or occasionally we’d love to hear from you.

Our next public “outing” will be manning the horse crossing at The Alresford Show on 5 September and we’ll be delighted to chat with you! Jon Pittam and James PInniger email: rotaryalresford@gmail.com Phone: 07973 747305 Website: alresford-rotary.org
