Easter egg hunt

Record Turnout for Alresford Easter Egg Hunt Brings Visitors and Vital Trade to the Town

Alresford’s annual Easter Egg Hunt delivered a record breaking turnout this year, attracting families from local schools, neighbouring villages, and visitors travelling from as far afield as Hertfordshire and Essex. The event proved not only a hit with children but also a welcome boost for the town’s shops, cafés, and local businesses.

A total of 197 participants took part in the trail, with numbers as follows:

• Sun Hill School: 77 participants

• Surrounding area schools: 24 participants

• Medstead School: 15 participants

• Four Marks School: 16 participants

• Out of area visitors: 65 participants

Organisers described the turnout as “excellent” and praised the community for its enthusiasm and support. The strong mix of local families and long distance visitors highlights the event’s growing reputation as a fun, family friendly attraction.

Local businesses also reported increased footfall, throughout the day, with many families

choosing to explore the town before or after completing the trail. This additional activity provided a welcome uplift to the local economy, reinforcing the value of community events in supporting Alresford’s high street.

We were delighted to hear such positive feedback from our local businesses following this year’s event, which is exactly the kind of boost we aim to bring to our high street. The toy shop were especially appreciative, sharing their thanks with the Chamber for “putting them on the map” in their new location. It’s wonderful to see a business settling into a fresh spot and already feeling the benefits of greater visibility and community engagement. We would also like to give our thanks to Ragamuffin for donating the prizes for the Egg Hunt.

We are proud to support our local traders and will continue working to ensure that events like ours bring real value to the businesses at the heart of our town.

A spokesperson for the organisers said: “We’re thrilled to see so many families enjoying the Easter Egg Hunt this year. Events like this bring people together, showcase the best of Alresford, and help support our wonderful local businesses. We’re already looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger.”

The Easter Egg Hunt continues to be a highlight of the town’s spring calendar, strengthening community ties while drawing new visitors to discover everything Alresford has to offer.

Flying Scotsman steams into town - Our members were on board

During the Flying Scotsman’s visit to the Watercress Line in February, the railway kindly extended a generous offer exclusively to Chamber members: a series of complimentary trips along the line to Alton and back. We were delighted that around sixteen members were able to take advantage of this opportunity

and experience one of the world’s most iconic locomotives first hand. The Flying Scotsman holds a special place in railway history, famed for being the first steam engine to break the 100 mph barrier. Its presence on the Watercress Line is always a major draw, and we are proud that our town can host such a celebrated attraction.

For our business community, visits like this do more than create memorable moments — they bring real value. The Scotsman attracts additional footfall, encouraging visitors to explore our shops, cafés, and eateries. It’s a welcome boost for local trade and a reminder of how fortunate we are to have the Watercress Line as a partner and a pillar of our visitor economy.

People & Places Survey 2026

The Chamber, with the support of NATC and WCC, has arranged for a People and Places Town Survey to be carried out. The last survey was carried out 10 years ago; and having a new survey carried out now will give us a huge amount of information that can be used to help inform decisions about the future direction of the High Street in our town. We are especially keen to gain information on visitor footfall and how businesses have changed within the town over the last decade.

We therefore ask for your help; if you should be stopped by one of the survey teams, it would be great if you could spare a little time to assist them. The information will allow us to ascertain the best Marketing tools required to promote New Alresford in the best possible way to help keep our beautiful Town thriving.

There are very few people who have not heard of Steve Jobs. During his time at Apple, he helped bring the world the iPod, iPhone, iPad and many other groundbreaking products. Jobs had two separate periods at Apple after co-founding the company in 1976. In 1985, following a bitter power struggle, he was forced out of Apple and went on to start NeXT, a computer company aimed at higher education and business markets.

Although NeXT was never a major commercial success, the experience proved transformative for Jobs and ultimately shaped the leadership style and design philosophy that later revived Apple. A fascinating new book by Geoffrey Cain explores this often-overlooked chapter of his life. Steve Jobs in Exile tells the story of the twelve years Jobs spent building NeXT after leaving Apple in 1985. It portrays him at his most creative, vulnerable and intense, during a period marked by setbacks, experimentation and reinvention. Those “wilderness years” would ultimately prepare him for his triumphant return to Apple in 1997, paving the way for one of the greatest corporate comebacks in modern business history.

Poached ChalkStream®️ Trout with Vermouth Sauce

ChalkStream®️ Trout, based near Romsey, source, prepare and deliver the finest English rainbow trout from their sustainable farms, which draw from the fast-flowing clear waters of the world-famous Test and Itchen Rivers. Their firm, athletic trout, rich in protein and vitamin D, low in fat and high in flavour, is enthused over by top chefs like Yotam Ottolenghi and Jamie Oliver

INGREDIENTS

• 50ml fish stock

• ½ glass of dry white wine

• 1 sprig of thyme

• 2 knobs of butter

• 2 fresh fillet steaks of ChalkStream®️ Trout

• 1 shallot

• 6 small cherry tomatoes

• 75ml of double cream

• ¼ glass of white vermouth

METHOD

Add the fish stock, white wine, thyme and one knob of butter to a saucepan, season well, bring to a simmer and gently poach the ChalkStream®️ fillets for about 10 minutes (you want them still slightly undercooked) and then transfer to a plate.

Melt another knob of butter in a pan and gently sauté a finely chopped small shallot until nicely softened, adding in the quartered cherry tomatoes.

Pour in the stock from the other pan and let it bubble away to reduce right down before adding the double cream.

Bring back to a simmer for 5 minutes to reduce and thicken further.

Finally add in the trout, check the seasoning and pour in a generous splash of white vermouth. Stir in and finish with a little chopped parsley.

The dish goes really well with mashed potatoes.

St Swithun’s Prep School to introduce a Nursery

As part of our ongoing commitment to excellence and to meeting the evolving needs of our community, we are delighted to share the news that St Swithun’s Prep School in Winchester is planning to introduce a new on-site nursery, supporting children from their very first steps on their educational journey and extending our early years provision for families with young children.

St Swithun’s Nursery and Preschool will offer high quality, co educational provision for children from nine months to four years, providing a nurturing and inclusive environment during the most formative early years of life. By placing emotional wellbeing, encouragement and exploration at the heart of our approach, we aim to give every child the confidence to begin, to try and to grow.

The nursery will sit alongside our existing preschool, which will also move to 50 week, all year round provision, whilst retaining the flexibility to be term-time only for those who wish. This will create a consistent and supportive early years pathway.

At the heart of our nursery and preschool provision is a strong focus on children’s emotional wellbeing, curiosity and growing independence, grounded in the school’s core values of Caritas, Humilitas and Sinceritas. We believe that the earliest years are vital in shaping children’s confidence and a love of learning. Our aim is that every child feels known and valued, with the freedom to explore and learn through play.

For our babies and younger toddlers, emotional security and strong relationships

will be paramount. Calm, welcoming spaces and responsive care will allow children to settle at their own pace, building trust and confidence through warm interactions, predictable routines and sensory rich play. As children grow, learning experiences will evolve to support greater independence and social awareness, while always maintaining play and wellbeing at their core.

An outdoor learning facility is also planned as part of the nursery development, reflecting our belief in the importance of outdoor play and exploration in early childhood, where curiosity is sparked and learning happens naturally through doing. Further details will be confirmed as plans progress.

The preschool year will provide a carefully supported bridge into prep school life, helping children develop independence and confidence while preserving the creativity, joy and curiosity that define an outstanding early

years education. From Reception onwards, St Swithun’s will remain a girls only school, with the nursery and preschool providing a strong foundation.

The nursery is expected to open between September 2026 and January 2027, subject to final approvals. Current plans are that places for children aged 2–3 years would open no earlier than 7 September, and places for children aged 9 months to 2 years no earlier than the autumn half term.

Working in the Community

Perhaps unknown to many, Perins Pre-School is to be found behind the Junior School on the Sun Hill site. Quoting from its website “Our professional team of highly qualified staff is dedicated and committed to ensure that each child has the highest standard of care and education whilst having lots of fun and laughter along the way! Children enjoy a wide range of activities both indoor and out, planned by an experienced and nurturing staff team who love and care for all the children. Our aim is that every individual child thrives and flourishes into their unique selves in our positive, family-feel environment”.

As well as having access to the Sun Hill Junior grounds the pre-school has a large secure garden connected to the main building with an array of structures and areas for the children’s enjoyment and development, including a large sandpit, a mud kitchen and playhouse, together with a gardening hub to learn about sowing, planting and caring for plants and the food we eat.

At the start of May Alresford Rotary spent a day tidying up ands enhancing the outdoor area. A new Wendy House (or to be more PC a Gingerbread House) was erected, overgrown

bushes were tidied up, dead tree stumps were dug up, brambles and weeds were cleared, fruit trees were planted and a pumpkin patch created. A small shed was moved and large storage shed (which had seen many better days) was demolished and within the next few weeks Alresford Rotary will be erecting its replacement. We are very grateful to Honorary Rotarian Paul Daubney for his invaluable contribution to the work and particularly his great strength!

Alresford Rotary was delighted to be one of the groups at the Showcase that preceded New Alresford Town Council’s Annual Assembly at Alresford Recreation Centre on 11th May. The event reinforced the fact that one of the few “good things” to have arisen from Covid has been the increased co-operation and communication between many of the local groups in and around Alresford including Rotary, Alresford Pigs, Churches Together in

Alresford, Alresford Chamber of Commerce, New Alresford Town Trust, New Alresford Town Council, The Men’s Shed and The Watercress Line. Volunteering helps midHampshire be a special place in which to live!

New Alresford Town Assembly

Thank you to everyone who attended this year’s New Alresford Town Assembly on Monday 11th May. The evening was a great opportunity for residents to hear about the work being carried out within the community and the projects planned for the year ahead, and to ask questions of the Council. A wide range of local organisations and community groups attended, including Alresford Rotary, Alresford PIGS, The Alresford Society, Alresford Chamber of Commerce, Alresford Tennis Club, New Leaf, Alresford WI, FOSHI, Alresford Town Trust and the Historical and Literary Society.

New zip wire Arlebury Park

A new double zip wire at Arlebury Park Recreation Ground is now fully operational and and is already proving popular with local residents. The new equipment forms part of ongoing improvements to the recreation ground and provides an exciting new activity encouraging outdoor play and exercise.

UNDERSTANDING RURAL

Do you know a young person who has had to move away because they couldn’t afford to live locally?

In many rural parts of Hampshire, housing is expensive. Younger adults aged 35 and under are often forced to move away, families can struggle to find suitable homes, and key workers may be unable to live in the communities they serve.

Rural affordable housing helps address this challenge. These are homes offered at costs local people can afford, including affordable rent and shared ownership options. Applicants must have a connection to the local area, ensuring homes go to those who already live, work, or have family there.

Even a small number of affordable homes (5 to 10 properties) can make a real difference. They help younger residents stay close to family and friends, support those living in overcrowded housing or looking to downsize, and enable key workers such as teachers, carers and tradespeople to live locally.

Affordable housing also benefits the wider community. For example, research by the Rural Services Network shows that just 10 new homes can generate £1.4 million in economic activity and support 26 jobs, helping sustain schools, shops, pubs, and other essential services.

Trust members and supporters help secure new sanctuary site for nature

Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust is pleased to announce the acquisition of Court House Meadows, a water meadow alongside the River Meon, which will be protected as a sanctuary site for wildlife.

Water meadows are a threatened habitat across Hampshire and the UK, and they form an important part of the county’s natural heritage. The presence of the River Meon, a rare chalk stream, running through the site makes Court House Meadows particularly ecologically valuable.

The 8.66-hectare (21.4-acre) site, just south of West Meon village, will be managed to support wildlife, restore the river’s natural floodplain, and enhance one of Hampshire’s rarest chalk stream habitats.

Court House Meadows will offer a haven for mammals including endangered water voles, overwintering wading birds such as snipe, amphibians including newts, insects including dragonflies, and aquatic life such as brown trout. The open grassland and river corridor will also support a diversity of meadow plants.

As a sanctuary site, Court House Meadows will not be open to the public, ensuring that the sensitive habitats and vulnerable species can thrive with minimal disturbance. The Trust will protect these habitats by implementing conservation measures and habitat management to safeguard wildlife and restore the river and floodplain.

John Durnell, Senior Director of Operations at Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust, said: “Securing Court House Meadows is a once-in-ageneration opportunity to protect an ecologically important site in the heart of the Meon Valley. With restoration work possible on both the land and the River Meon, this rare chalk stream site will be able to flourish, help restore the

floodplain to a more natural state, strengthen wildlife connections in the surrounding area, and create a space where species can thrive again.

“We can give space back to species including our much-loved water vole, whose habitat has dramatically declined, which makes sites like this so crucial for their survival. I am deeply grateful to our partners and Trust members and supporters who made this possible. Their support is directly contributing to this land functioning more naturally for wildlife.”

Chalk streams are among the rarest habitats in the world, with only around 200 globally, 80% of which are found in southern England. The River Meon is described as one of Hampshire’s “Cinderella chalk streams” and is often cited as the best example of a chalk stream in the country. Protecting Court House Meadows will help safeguard the river’s clear waters, rich biodiversity, and natural floodplain function.

By restoring the floodplain, the site will enhance habitats for wildlife, slow and store water, reduce flood risk downstream for local communities and improve water quality.

The acquisition has been made possible thanks to generous support from the South Downs National Park Authority and the South Downs Trust alongside pledges from local supporters, and an overwhelming response to the Trust’s public fundraising appeal which received more than 1,000 donations from Trust members and the local community.

The new site strengthens the Trust’s landholding in the Meon Valley, contributing to a more resilient landscape by adding to a network of other nearby Trust-owned sites, including St Clair’s Meadow, Bere Copse, Shutts Copse and Chappetts Copse Nature Reserves.

Winchester City Councillors' Report June

The Local Council Elections

Although the Liberal Democrats spend time throughout the year in conversation with residents at street surgeries, public meetings and on doorsteps, the effort does intensify in the run-up to the elections. All your local councillors find it immensely useful to have these conversations, both with their supporters and importantly with those who already support or who might support other parties. It is only by listening to you all that we can understand local issues and concerns. Doorstepping also provides an opportunity to explain what it is that the Council is currently doing and the background to many issues. Contrary to some political views, running a council is complicated, far more so than running a business. Add to that the very tight and indeed tightening budgets and you end up with very difficult decisions on how to allocate resources.

An example of the need to provide background information of would be the Local Government Reorganisation. A huge amount of officer time and money has been invested in developing the best outcome of change for the residents of our current district. WCC is required by Central Government to do this, even though there if is no actual physical results of this effort, the result will be a smooth transition to a new administration in 2028 that continues to provide good services.

Our thanks for all who talked to us before the election and to those who voted on the day for whichever party. Our electoral mandate comes from the people. On many wards in the

district the margins for winning are tight and each vote actually matters.

Planning Application for a solar farm

We have seen a significant number of comments on a recent application for a solar farm at West Court just east of New Alresford. Thank you for the comments. The City Council welcomes all comments on all planning applications. We need to know your views. (If you are concerned on how to comment, we are always ready to explain the process). Only Clare and Margot can help on this particular application. Russell cannot be involved on this one as he is a member of the Planning Committee. Members of the committee have to be strictly impartial and entering into discussions with either side before the meeting can be seen to be favouring one over the other.

We are all waiting with bated breath for the new roundabout link road to open, the highway safety audit has delayed this beyond the hoped-for first week in May. You will know as soon as we do!

New stroke support group for Alresford residents

Alton Stroke Support Group is running free transport from Alresford and surrounding villages to Alton for people who have experienced strokes, their carers, and loved ones.

This is a new outreach scheme, which uses the New Alresford Town Trust (NATT) Community Bus. This bus can collect and return users to/ from their front doors. The NATT bus is equipped with a chair lift and

trained helpers so everyone is able to be accommodated. Support includes not only friendship, understanding, and reassurance, but also talks from experts on issues including rehabilitation, exercise, emotional difficulties, and financial concerns. The only donation requested is £2 for a hot drink and homemade cake at the meeting. If demand in Alresford is high enough, then an Alresford Stroke Support Group is the next step.

Clare Pinniger, one of your ward councillors, is also the Trustee with oversight of NATT’s community buses, said “We are absolutely delighted to be involved with this crucial scheme. It furthers our aim of increasing opportunities for residents in and around Alresford.”

The bus leaves Alresford at 1pm, returning at 4.30pm.

A One Horse Race

“Are you coming?” She tried and failed (largely because she didn’t try very hard) to keep the impatience out of her voice. Tomorrow was Solstice and she was hoping for an early night. Weather forecast was for, as Homer would have said, a ‘rosy-fingered dawn’ and she intended to be up to see it.

“We’ve loads of time, darling. It’s not dark for ages.” Himself was engrossed with his phone and barely looked up.

The dogs, anticipating their evening walk (Muzzy had leads in her hand and everything) looked with disgust from him to her and back again.

He had a point. It was that time of year again when you could go to bed with the birds still singing and be hard pushed to rise before dawn’s rosy fingers crept above the horizon.

“What are you doing?” It couldn’t be doom scrolling on social media. Himself’s online involvement usually stretched to the news app. Lately, also the weather app for his burgeoning, obsessive interest in wind speeds. Since buying a brand-spanking new gazebo, there’d been a lot of frowning out of the window at the outside world. Also, mutterings of catastrophic collapse and talk of an emergency take-down. She assumed they were related to the gazebo and not the general demise of civilisation.

“I’m trying to find my date of birth. I’ve been scrolling for what seems like an eternity and I’m still in the 1970s..”

She dimly remembered the 1970s – and they’d seemed like an eternity at the time. Decimalisation created confusion, the three-day week created hardship. Dinners that were half-cooked when the power was cut, and dodgy hair styles everywhere. Although she’d longed for a Farrah Fawcett feather cut, the exception that proved the rule. That she didn’t have the pre-requisite round brush, nor a nebula of hairspray and did not own a hairdryer, were mere trifling details that stood in the way of iconic status at school.

A spaniel gently pawed at her knee, rousing her from her reverie. She returned to the twenty-first century, where she did indeed possess a round brush and several nebulas of hairspray and a hairdryer. Sadly, though, she now lacked both the inclination and time to dedicate herself to high maintenance hair. The dogs had become used to Muzzy blasting her upsidedown head with that nasty, noisy thing and saying ‘that’ll do’.

But why was Himself on the internet looking for his date of birth? Her eyebrows drew together, creasing her brow with suspicion.

“Why do you need to declare your age?”

Himself was jabbing at the screen. “I have to be over eighteen.”

The line of suspicion deepened – less of a crease, more of a crevasse. If

Himself had dragged his eyes away from his descent through the decades and seen the Samaria Gorge developing on her face, the warning sirens would have been howling in his head like a scene from The Time Machine. Suspicion was being pursued by Curiosity – they were having a little race in her head.

“Over eighteen? Why?”

“Because it’s an adult website, I suppose.” He really should have been looking at her.

“Come on dogs!” she announced loudly, “let’s leave Daddy to his allconsuming ADULT website and go for a walk.”

The ‘W’ word lit the blue touch paper and she stood well back as the dogs hurtled towards the front door.

“Wait, I’ve nearly finished registering – I just wanted to have a look at the pictures..”

Curiosity was now neck and neck with Suspicion. “But what website is it, or can’t you share that with me after twenty years of marriage.”

“Well, I’d rather not. If you don’t mind.”

She very much did mind. “It’s a secret,” he elaborated. Suspicion and Curiosity had been joined by Slightly Offended on the outside. Disbelief was bringing up the rear, but gaining ground.

Finally, Himself looked at her face. Her expression made him widen his eyes and, for a moment, he looked perplexed. Then, somewhere deep inside, the rosy fingered dawn of realisation broke.

“Oh. Oh. No. Not that sort of adult website. Not secret. No. Wrong word. Surprise. It’s a surprise!” he babbled.

Suspicion and Slightly Offended fell at the water. Curiosity and Disbelief were jostling for position. She much preferred surprises that she organised herself, because then they would be militarily well-planned, with nice refreshments and appropriate clothing. Controlling, much? Yes. She no longer fought it.

She shot him a look and, somewhere deep inside Himself, a rosy fingered dawn of remembering this important fact, also broke.

“I thought,” he explained in a rush, “that we could go on a distillery tour and cocktail masterclass for our twentieth wedding anniversary. Hence having to be over 18 to register on the website.. If you like that idea, it’d be wonderful if you would organise it,” he suggested, tentatively.

Relief came from nowhere, thundering up on the outside, only to be pipped at the post, as always, by Love. Because, in spite of the also-rans, it was never going to be anything other than a one-horse race.

Be tick aware!

Watch out there are ticks about! It’s the perfect conditions for these mini beasts. Here’s a helpful reminder of some simple ‘tick tips’ if you’re out walking.

These tiny insects, which can transmit bacteria such as Lyme disease, can be found throughout the year but are most active between spring and autumn. They are typically found in woodland, grassland, moorland or heathland but are also found in urban parks and gardens. When out walking, remember to keep to footpaths, avoiding long grass

‘Tick tips’ for walkers include:

• Wear appropriate clothing (a long-sleeve shirt and trousers tucked into your socks)

• Use an insect repellent

• Wear light coloured fabrics that may help you spot a tick on your clothes

• Inspect your skin for ticks, particularly at the end of the day, including your head, neck and skin folds (armpits, groin and waistband)

• Check your children’s head and neck areas, including their scalp (skin on top of their head)

• Check that pets do not bring ticks into your home in their fur.

If you do get bitten by a tick, removing it quickly and correctly can help to reduce any potential risk.

The only safe way to remove a tick is to use a pair of fine-tipped tweezers, or an easy-touse device which can be purchased from pharmacies or vets.

Then: Grasp the tick as close to the skin as possible. Pull upwards slowly and firmly, as mouthparts left in the skin can cause a local infection. Once removed, apply antiseptic to the bite area and keep an eye on it for several weeks for any changes

Contact your GP if you begin to feel unwell or develop a circular red skin rash, often described as a bull’s-eye rash, and remember to tell them that you were bitten by a tick.

Grieving on Father’s Day

Father’s Day can be a particularly challenging time when you are grieving, and

it’s important to approach the day with selfcompassion. To look after yourself, Cruse Bereavement Support, suggests embracing all your emotions, like sadness, anger, jealousy, or numbness, without feeling ashamed or guilty. These feelings are common and will eventually fade. Taking time for self-care is crucial; don’t feel pressured to engage in activities you don’t want to, and consider spending the day doing things you enjoy, whether that’s with family or by yourself, like a long walk or watching films. It’s also perfectly okay to take a break from social media for the day if seeing others’ celebrations becomes overwhelming.

If you wish to mark the day, there are various ways to remember your loved one, such as lighting a candle, planting a flower, visiting a special place, sharing memories with friends and family, or making a donation in their name. Alresford Green Fair is a collaboration between New Alresford Town Trust and New Leaf Alresford.

New Leaf hosts a monthly ‘Natter’ on the second Thursday from 7pm in the Snug at The Swan. Anyone and everyone who has an interest in nature and climate is very welcome. Next month’s Natter will be a bit different – on Thursday 9th July you are invited to an alfresco version at the Community Growing allotment plot at Spring Gardens. THE WINCHESTER CARE HOME WITH A SECRET GARDEN

Tucked away in the Hampshire countryside, just minutes from Winchester, lies an extraordinary secret.

At first glance, The Dower House appears to be a beautifully designed residential and nursing home, quietly settled into its rural surroundings. What most passers by would never imagine is what unfolds beyond its entrance: five acres of mature, carefully curated gardens alive with colour, wildlife and a rare sense of calm. It is this hidden landscape that makes The Dower House truly unlike any other care home in the area.

In a county celebrated for its rolling fields and historic estates, it is still unusual to find a private care home surrounded by such expansive gardens - and rarer still one where those gardens are designed to be explored rather than simply admired. For residents at The Dower House, these grounds are an integral part of daily life.

The gardens reveal themselves gradually, inviting discovery. Winding paths, gentle bridges and quiet corners create ever changing views, ensuring no two walks are quite the same. One of the most striking features is the Indian Bean Tree, which comes into its own in late spring and early summer when it fills the air with a soft, sweet fragrance and orchid like flowers. Later in the year, its broad heart shaped leaves and hanging bean pods provide architectural interest and a favourite stopping point for residents and visitors alike.

Nearby, a cherry blossom tree marks the changing seasons, its delicate blooms offering a moment of reflection each year. Elsewhere, the landscape opens onto a thriving pond, home to water lilies, koi carp and goldfish. Dragonflies skim the surface while birds, frogs and insects turn it into a genuine wildlife haven.

For colour lovers, the geranium bank is a standout, carpeting the landscape in rich purples when in bloom. At the front of the home, the iris bed bursts briefly but spectacularly into life, planted like an artist’s paint palette of deep blues, yellows and violets.

These gardens are not simply there to be viewed from a window. Thanks largely to Head Gardener Ben, who has cared for the grounds for over a decade, they are woven into life at The Dower House through regular walks, seasonal events and a much loved gardening club with residents.

In a sector where outdoor space is often limited, The Dower House’s five acre secret garden remains a rare and quietly enriching treasure - waiting to surprise those who step inside.

SOUTHERN VOICES CONCERT

You are invited to spend an evening in St John’s, Alresford on Saturday 27 June at 7.30pm and enjoy a light-hearted programme of choral singing from Winchester chamber choir – Southern Voices.

The choir is delighted to be returning to Alresford and the concert is filled with the makings of a perfect summer’s evening entertainment for you.

“Flower Songs” opens with three delightful Pearsall madrigals: Summer is icumen in; Lay a Garland and Sing we and chaunt it and closes with two well-known tunes to leave you smiling – Goodnight Sweetheart, here arranged by Kirby Shaw, and Night and Day, arranged by Andrew Carter. The Flower Songs are courtesy of Benjamin Britten – whose Five Flowers Songs will be sung by way of commemoration of the composer’s 50th anniversary of his death. More Flower Songs follow from contemporary composer, and great favourite of the choir, Eric Whitacre.

There will also be Shakespeare Love Songs by founder member of the Gesualdo Six, Owain Park - surely no summer evening can be complete without a nod to the Bard, and also Britten’s Choral Dances from Gloriana. All in all, a positive potpourri of music to delight you.

I was recently introduced to a company called Soil Smiths, they are ’Soil Scientists’, who are based in North Hampshire. They are a relatively new company having worked mainly with farmers and flower growers, with a great deal of success. They have now turned their attention to us gardeners as well. Several NGS gardeners in Hampshire have invited Soil Smiths to their open gardens, giving the visitor the opportunity to have their compost analysed - free of charge. Simply bring along a small sample of your compost and have it tested under a microscope - you can then see all the nematodes, testate amoeba and fungi (or not) within your compost. I can assure you that it is absolutely fascinating to be able to see what is going on in a very small sample - all invisible to the naked eye.

Trout Cottage - A small walled garden, inspiring those with small spaces and little time to achieve tranquillity and beauty. Showcasing around 180 plants flowering for almost 10 months of the year.

The Old Rectory - A partially walled garden with a formal pond, fountain, and planting near the house, plus a streamside walk under trees, extensive new planting, and a woodland area. Shepherds House - On Winton Hill features herbaceous borders, a kitchen garden, and a belvedere overlooking the pond. Fishmore House - An 8 yr old garden on a ¾ acre plot, with the key elements of design being planting, water, and a borrowed landscape. It is fully accessible, with bound gravel paths and no steps, and surrounded by the River Test, with seating to enjoy the views and large, sweeping herbaceous borders.

The National Garden Scheme is joining forces with the UK Centre for Ecology & Hydrology (UKCEH) to carry out The Big British Garden Survey. With the severe decline in our wildlife and ecosystems, our gardens have become a vital place for our native
