New Alresford Town Council

Coronavirus – Non medical support The Town Council together with PIGS, Churches Together and Rotary are setting up a support structure to assist those in need where friends, family and neighbours are unable to help. This is a collaborative initiative with local groups to care for our residents in the area and is supported by Winchester Rural Policing Team.

This will include street co-ordinators across the town to help re-enforce the neighbourhood support, which we are in the process of creating .

The New Arlesford Coordination Hub will be open between 8am and 8pm and can be contacted via

GARDEN Don't let late frosts damage your seedlings In spring your seedlings are vulnerable to late frosts, which even in late April can set in overnight. If a hard frost is forescast, cover your seedlings overnight with anything you have to hand: an overturned flowerpot or cardboard box (with a rock on top), a portable garden cloche, or if you own one a cold frame. If your garden has the space, and your budget allows, a small greenhouse is ideal for starting seedlings early in the season and protecting them from any harsh spring weather.

Weed spring weeds and mulch bare patches in your beds When the weeds begin to apprear in your garden beds, now is the easiest time to pull them out, when the roots are shallow.

Covering bare patches of earth with mulch or ground cover will minimize the emergence of any new weeds. Try to add mulch to a depth of three to four inches for the best results. Weed membrane can also be used to cover the beds before planting as a way to suppress any emerging weeds.

And if you look under the membrane once a week, you may likely find slugs which have been hiding. This is a simple way to reduce the slug population in your garden beds.

To help reduce rot in the stems of new

plants or young trees, keep the mulch a few inches away from the stem or trunk.

This also protects bark of young fruit trees.

There are various types of mulch available, check the best product for your plants.

Fix trellises and fencing Trellises and fencing have taken a lot punishment in the Winter storms, they are easiest to repair in early spring, with less growth to work around and fewer roots to disturb. Setting new fence posts, however, is best done after the April showers have abated and the earth has had a chance to drain through. If the water table is too high which is likely after the recent weather, postholes will fill with water as you try to dig. As the weather improves and the saturated ground drains loose posts may become firm again.

Thin out any dead foliage Once new growth starts, it becomes difficult to thin ornamental grasses and ferns without causing damage. The growth will quickly replace the cut away foliage. If you didn’t get around to this last Autumn, remove any old dead plants to clear the bed for planting. These can be added to the compost if you are sure they do not have any plant diseases.

Control slugs and Snails Wet weather causes slugs and snails to emerge. If slugs are a problem in your area, monitor your seedlings for damage and remove pests as they emerge. Please always use non-toxic slug pellets for the safety of pets and other garden creatures. Place the pellets when weather permits to keep them from decimating your garden before you get a chance to enjoy your harvest.

Repair any broken sides to raised beds Damp winter soil deteriorates raised beds; sometimes a stake will rot and give way leading to damage to borders. Any broken or leaning sides should be fixed. Dig the soil behind the broken or leaning sides and drive in new stakes on the inside of the boards with a slight inward lean. Then push the boards up to stakes and fasten with screws or nails.

undisturbed. Nutrients added from the top will gradually feed into the soil.

Prepare your lawn for spring Scarify your lawn to remove any dead growth and winter debris. This helps bring light and aerate to the soil which in turn encourages growth. Grass seeding bare patches of lawn. Scarify any bare spots firmly with a metal rake or scarifier before seeding. Sprinkle the grass seed into a a container of soil and spread the content evenly over the bare spot. Once the area has been seeeded keep well-watered until germination and the new grass has established itself.

Early spring is the best time for lime Soil pH levels can have a significant effect on the health of your plants. Adding lime to a soil with a pH level below 6.2 will benefit the soil quality. Ideally, lime should be added a few weeks before planting. Do not purchase a “quick lime”, as it can change the soil pH so rapidly that plants may be damaged. Cover all newly limed beds with a membrane or plastic sheet during heavy spring rains to prevent runoff. Test your soil pH level, this can be determined by using a soil pH test kit available in most good garden centres.

Plant starters in trays Get a head start on the summer if you are planning to grow heat-loving vegetables from seed like tomatoes, peppers, aubergine, and basil. Sow any seeds into starter mix and divide into trays. Place on

a sunny windowsill or under a grow light as soon as the new shoots emerge.

Plant out bulbs and tubers Now is the time to set out your bulbs which were forced in pots or bowls in the house.

Not all will flower this year, some may bloom in the future, others may take two or three years to gain energy to support flowering. It’s also the time to plant out any lilies, dahlia tubers or gladiola bulbs that may have been overwintered indoors.

Plant seasonal vegetables when soil is workable You can tell when the soil is ready for gardening once it is free of frost and crumbles easily in the hand. Soil that is too wet is will become compacted when worked, reducing beneficial soil aeration. It is highly likely after such a wet winter that the season will be late, fingers crossed for a warm, dry, spring. Good early spring crops are peas, spinach, lettuces and leeks.

For a prolonged harvest, plant several varieties, each with a different harvesting time. Once these crops have been harvested you can follow with broccoli, new potatoes, cabbage, turnips, radishes and onions.

Move any shrubs before they leaf Soil conditions in early spring are favorable to move your plants because the soil is more consistently moist, this helps the roots to establish themselves and reach out for more nutrients. To move your shrubs use a spade and find the edges of

the main root mass, then dig down and under to loosen the root ball.

Make sure that you dig the new hole a few inches wider all around, and add soil nutrients such as compost or organic fertilizer. Once the moved plant is set in place, fill around with lightly compacted soil which will promote lateral root growth.

10 Spring Lawn Care Essentials Let’s look at what can be done now to get your lawn ready for a beautiful summer

1. Moss Low light levels, shade and increased rainfall creates the ideal conditions for moss to colonise your lawn. Always apply a moss killing treatment after you have raked or scarified your lawn in order to kill and loose pieces of moss. Never, ever mow into moss. If you have moss in your lawn that you can’t remove then raise your mower blades so the grass leaf is at least 2cm above the moss.

2. Dethatch

Thatch is a layer of organic matter that lays on top of the soil just above the roots of grass plants. It has little or no microbial activity, unless you get involved it will not decompose. It prevents water and nutrition reaching the roots. It reduces the amount of air in the soil that’s essential for healthy plant life. Spring is the right time to dethatch turf. Cutting into the thatch to introduce air spaces is ideal. Boosting microbial activity with a compost tea - yes, you heard me, you can make a tea from compost and its super for your lawn health.

7. Weed control Catch weeds early in the season if you can. Professional weed killers either cause the weed to produce excessive growth hormones and grow themselves to death or they inhibit the plant’s ability to photosynthesise and they starve to death. Some weeds are harder to control than others. Weed control is complex, get it right and your lawn’s going to look great this summer.

3. Aerate Aeration is by far the most beneficial mechanical process for your lawn. Soil relies on beneficial fungi and bacteria which make micronutrients available to grass plants and also produces growth hormones whilst protecting the plants from attack from pests and disease. Worms and insects also need water, air and food. Roots grow in the air gaps between the soil particles, not in the soil itself.

By aerating your lawn, you are introducing the air gaps essential to support that soil activity. In addition, aeration relieves compaction and helps reduce waterlogging too.

9. Mow The majority of lawn issues I see can be traced back to a poor mowing regime. It’s relatively easy to get it right. Make sure your mower blades are sharp. Cut off no more than a quarter of the leaf length each mow. Start from different places on the lawn. Ideally mulch mow, leaving clippings behind to feed the essential soil microbes.

4. Rake Using a spring rake removes debris and helps the grass leaf stand upright. When things begin to grow again in the early spring it’s a good idea to give your lawn a bit of a hair-brush, get things standing to attention and ready for a mow. Spring raking removes lingering autumn leaves and grass blades that didn't survive winter. Do it now!

5. Over-seed.

Repair bare patches in your lawn by over-seeding. Remove the dead patch of grass with a rake. In-fill with compost and mix seed into the top layer. Give it a good water and wait until the seed germinates 6. Fertilise All living things need food, they also need the right kind of food in the right quantities. Many home-owners seem to forget this. Lawns need

the right amount of Nitrogen, Potassium and Phosphorus throughout the year. The occasional sprinkle of a 3-in-1 spring feed from the garden centre is not really cutting it. If you are going to feed your own lawn focus on quality over quantity. Focus on feeding the soil and let the soil feed the plant. If in doubt, speak to a lawn care professional

8. Water It costs less than £5 to water the average sized lawn. You only really need to do that every other week. Give it an inch of water (measured in a container on the lawn). Lawn care professionals use wetting agents, they keep water in the root-zone and mean that you can apply half as much water whilst getting the same results.

10. Edge

Cutting a neat edge will help define the lawn Ensure you use a half-moon edging tool and make sure it’s sharp. Work from a board that you stand on along the edge you are cutting. If it’s a curved edge you need then lay a rope or hose out first to ensure you are happy with the curve you are about to cut. Ensure the edge you cut slopes away from the turf. If in doubt, look on YouTube.

our Marks was first mentioned in ‘Perambulation of the Manor of Alresford’ in 1550 and consists of a description of the boundaries. The reference to Four Marks translates roughly as “a certain vacant piece of land called Fowrem’kes near Bookmere and so called Fowrem’kes because iiii adjoining tithings abut there namely the tithings of Medsted Ropley Faryngdon & Chawton.

There were thus borders (marks in Old English) extending in four directions. In medieval Europe, a mark was, in broad terms, any kind of borderland. Although there were mentions of Four Marks it did not become an official parish until 1932 when six parishes were annexed to create it, which were Medstead, Ropley, Chawton, East Tisted, Newton Vallence and Farringdon and is one of the smallest parishes in East Hampshire.

The elevation of Four Marks gained the parish notetriaty by being used by the Admiralty as a location for a Semaphore Station (Farringdon Common, Four Marks). This was to be one of many stations designed to communicate information quickly between the Admiralty in London and the ships in Portsmouth and Plymouth during and after the Napoleonic Wars. Unfortunately the Sempahore line was never completed and the stations fell into disrepair even though the station at Four Marks still exists as a private residence to this day. The Mid Hants Railway ‘Watercress Line’ also runs through the village and stands as the highest operational standard gauge railway station in southern England. The line was once very busy with passengers and freight bound for London. Due to the Beeching cuts the line ceased running in 1973, only to reopen in May 1983 under the ownership of Mid-Hants Railway.

Notably the Pilgrims way and St.Swithuns Way run through the parish, the Pilgrims way being the route taken by Pilgrims from Winchester to the shrine of Thomas Becket at Canterbury in Kent.

Further back in history there are signs of Stone Age and Bronze Age activity in the area.

On the top of Swelling Hill there is a pond which, when Four Marks had no mains water supply, was a great standby in times of drought.

Local residents can remember seeing cows driven to the pond and some remember how they swam in it when they were children. But it fell into disuse and became so overgrown, that it was little more than a swamp. In 1974 a team of enthusiastic helpers was formed and they

dredged the pond, cleared the surrounding jungle, planted shrubs and plants, put up seats and even a wishing well. All th hard work they earnt them the the Daily Telegraph National Award for the best rehabilitated pond!

The population of Four Marks saw its largest increase after the Crimean War when Veterans settled there, each veteran being allocated a plot for a small holding. Today Four Marks has an ever growing population, there are three churches in the village and there are two shopping areas located along the A31 and on Lymington Bottom Road. Four Marks has a wide range of independent shops with a Greengrocers, two off licences, cafes, golf club, cycle shop, butchers, sadllers, equine supplier, computer shop, garden centre, car repair centres and much more.

However, there is a yet no commitment to implement this method. ‘S&TC has seen the results of trials using ozone which appear to have removed pesticides, herbicides and insecticides to levels below the current limits of detection. This process not only appears to remove problem pesticides washed off imported salad leaves but will also remove toxic chemicals that have leached into the groundwater over previous years., If treatment is implemented, this could mean the discharge would return water to the river in a cleaner state than it came out of Bakkavör’s borehole.’

Antibiotics are rarely needed. 90% are better within a week without an antibiotic. In fact, antibiotics only shorten symptoms (pain) by about half a day! Complications are rare. We would need to give antibiotics to 200 people with sore throat to prevent one ear infection, and to 4000 people to prevent one tonsil abscess (quinsy).

In fact, people can develop quinsy even when they are taking antibiotics!

The most important self-care is to drink adequate fluids to prevent thirst, and to take medication for good pain relief. Your pharmacist can advise you on this. If antibiotics are taken unnecessarily, it allows bacteria to build up resistance. This means, they’re less likely to work in the future, when they might be essential. They can also cause side effects. We know that, when faced with an unwell child, parents often find it difficult to be sure whether the child needs to see a doctor, or whether they can be managed with sensible self-care at home. Retirement of Sister Sally Denniss

Sally Denniss, who has been a Practice Nurse here for 20 years and a District Nurse here for 10 years before that will be sadly retiring at the end of April. Over her time at the Surgery she has seen lots of changes and seen lots of patients. Sally will miss seeing patients and working with the wonderful team at Alresford but feels it’s time to start a new chapter in her life.

Retirement of Dr. Cribb

Dr Richard Cribb will be retiring from Alresford Surgery in early May. Dr Cribb joined the surgery in 1993 and will have given 27 years service to the town of Alresford and surrounding villages. We are currently recruiting to fill the gap he will leave and we hope there will be more news about this next month.

Waiting room blood pressure machine

We now have an automated blood pressure machine in the waiting room. This can be used by non-patients & patients, as long as you live within the local community, so feel free to come down to the surgery and measure your blood pressure at your leisure. Please ensure that you complete your details on the bottom of the printed slip & then hand your result to reception who can then update your records. This facility can be a very convenient alternative to booking an appointment, especially if you require an up to date blood pressure for a referral for example.

We hope that this will save patients time as well as making more appointments available. If you require any assistance in using the blood pressure machine please ask a member of the reception team who will be happy to assist you.

ENTERTAINMENT Robert starts with an idea of what the overall layout of the piece will be, and then designs and tries out small areas in isolation before weaving increasingly longer lengths of ribbon to see how each strip works with its neighbours. The final process is to weave a complete length of each ribbon which can then be mounted and framed. Through this process the finished piece evolves over a considerable length of time.

Works in Silk by Robert Ely: 28 March to 21 June ‘Works in Silk’, an exhibition by silk ribbon weaver Robert Ely, will open at Whitchurch Silk Mill on 28 March 2020. Weaving is on the Heritage Crafts Association Red List of Endangered Crafts, and silk weavers are few in number, so this is a unique opportunity to see silk ribbons woven in the UK showcased in the country’s oldest silk mill.

Robert Ely studied hand weaving at West Surrey College of Art and Design, graduating in 1989, and in 1995 his connection with the Whitchurch Silk Mill began as he completed a short internship there to study weaving shed operations.

In 1996 he began to design and weave jacquard silk ribbons for his new studio, called Papilionaceous. At first Robert intended to weave silk for bow ties, which in French are ‘papillon’ – the butterfly – and so Papilionaceous, a word meaning butterfly-like, was born. The studio relocated to Dartmouth, Devon in 2001.

Winchester Poetry Prize 2020 launched

An annual poetry competition celebrating the best in new writing for 2020 has been launched. The Winchester Poetry Prize is organised by the Winchester Poetry Festival and is open to poets from around the world.

This year’s entries will be judged by Andrew McMillan,whose first collection, physical, was the only poetry collection to ever win The Guardian First Book Award and was the Poet in Residence at Basingstoke Discovery Centre in 2012. He is also a senior lecturer in the Manchester Writing School.

The winner will be announced at the Winchester Poetry Festival, which takes

Robert is now able to devote more time to the artistic side of his work, designing and weaving wall pieces assembled from multiple woven silk ribbons and inspired by local Devon land and seascapes. The ribbons are woven on a narrow fabric jacquard loom which weaves at a width of 4cm. As with any other form of weaving, the appearance of the finished piece is a combination of weave structure and yarn colour. The jacquard mechanism allows greater control over where the structures and colours are used.

Ed Chamberlin Gill Grant speaks with Ed Chamberlin the King of Presenting Sport

T

o talk with Ed Chamberlin is a delight for more than one reason. Ed has lived in Hampshire all his life and has endless enthusiasm for our county.

“Although my parents were originally from the West Country we moved near to Andover and then to St. Mary Bourne. Later I went to Exeter University to study politics, from there I lived in London working on a placement at Ladbrokes, I attempted to start my own magazine but the financial crash of the late 80s - 90s put paid to that” Ed had not planned for a career in television, “Journalism was absolutely where I wanted to be but I was picked up by Sky TV for football presenting, I worked on various shows with fellow presenters Kirsty Gallacher and Jeff Stelling but there again I was jinxed - every show I worked on didn’t seem to last long!

“Everything changed in 2011 when I had the opportunity to host Sky Sports News. Then, in 2017 I moved to ITV to present horse racing.

I still get asked now how I could leave the world of football for racing.

But I’ve not lost my passion for football, St Marys remains one of my favourite places in Hampshire loved by my ten-year-old son too. My daughter and I are fans of T20 cricket at the Rose Bowl.”

Ed is equally passionate about The Sport of Kings, I wonder if he can recognise good horse when he sees one.

“I have become more knowledgable about horses over the years, it’s a hobby, and I enjoy the odd flutter or too- without much success I have to add. Presenting racing requires a lot of concentration, you have to keep up with the whole race, I couldn’t be willing my horse to win - too much of a distraction.

“My role as a presenter as I see it is to make racing accessible to all, irrespective of age, expert or novice. So I ask the professionals the questions I think the viewers want to hear. Also, people watching also want to be entertained, that’s important too. Des Lynam is my hero - that dry humour, intelligence, and generosity to allow people to speak and get the best out of them.”

Is there a special racecourse for him?

“To be honest they all have a special quality in their own right.

Doncaster, Cheltenham Festival, Glorious Good Wood and I just love Royal Ascot. Aintree is the biggest attracting ten million viewers, when you consider the size of a game between Manchester and Liverpool would attract around three million viewers you can see how pressurised racing presenting can be, it’s a big responsibility.

I still get nervous before an important meeting but I think that's a good thing, I’m never complacent.”

There was an underlying reason behind Ed’s move to ITV because in 2009 his life changed dramatically.

“It was in Winchester hospital that I was diagnosed with stomach cancer. I was immediately placed in the care of the phenomenal team at Southampton General and my Oncologist Ben Needham who told me that although the tumour was the size of a grapefruit he was confident I would be cured, that was on Wednesday and by Friday I had commenced my chemotherapy.

“I always felt in control of my treatment, I knew what was going on. By week six my blood markers were coming down - that’s the information you live to hear. The Southampton FC players give regular time visiting the children’s cancer ward, so I arranged to have

my head shaved for charity by Steve Cotterill it raised a few laughs, so there were some lighter moments!

“The treatment was hard on my family, my wife was expecting our second child at the time so it was very stressful for her, and the whole family. I then got to the point when they were able to remove the tumour, the op didn’t go quite to plan and I awoke in intensive care and remained there for two weeks. But I did get to watch the Champions League on TV, admittedly it took some persuading to allow me a TV in intensive care! I remember the absolute joy of being able to walk again on day eight.”

Of course, Ed’s illness and recovery had a profound effect on his life.

“It’s given me something extra, a real determination- I don’t think I would have considered the job at ITV before, it was life-changing. It taught me never to feel sorry for myself.

Now he is recovered, what next for Ed Chamberlin?

“Ah well, I’d love to present the Olympics, and Southampton v Manchester United. But it’s the simple things in life too, I have old friends from the Sporting News, I love to show off Hampshire when they come to stay. I live in a beautiful village with the River Test and the Mayfly pub nearby. There’s nothing like a walk on Broughton Downs. Then there’s the Watercress Line and we can pop to Pizza Express afterward or my favourite Kyoto Kitchen in Winchester” Ed Chamberlin continues to canter on with his happy and healthy life in Hampshire.

The Rotary Club of Alresford Mercy Ships - According to the Lancet Commission on Global Surgery more than 17 million people worldwide die every year from conditions requiring surgical care, more than from HIV, malaria and TB combined. That is equivalent to the populations of London, Scotland and Wales dying every year because they can’t get the operation they need.

For 5 billion people the medical care we take for granted in the U K isn’t an option and a quarter of those who can get surgery face financial catastrophe as a result and there’s no guarantee that the operation will solve the problem. To address this problem there is an urgent need for significant growth in surgical capacity and training in developing countries.

A new ship the “Global Mercy” is due for deployment within the next year or so. It will increase surgical and teaching capacity from 8500 p.a. to more than 20,000 p.a. and the 1,400 medical staff currently trained and mentored will more than double. The new vessel will cover more than 7000m2 and will house 5 operating rooms, 102 acute care beds, 7 ICU/Isolation beds and an additional 90 self-care beds. Including crew and all medical staff the “Global Mercy will provide accommodation for 641 people. Alresford Rotary is delighted to have contributed to Rotary’s fund raising appeal for Mercy Ships. The overall appeal has raised more than $1.109 million so far showing what Rotary can achieve as an international organisation. The monies raised will go towards purchasing at least 35 sets of surgical instruments and trays for use in the operating rooms, carrying out a wide range of surgeries including maxillofacial and reconstruction surgery, tumour removal, cleft lip, palate repair, plastics, orthopaedics, cataract removal, and obstetric fistula repair.

Stratton Bates Play Area Public Exhibition 16th April Plans to redevelop the play area at Stratton Bates Recreation ground are progressing well, following successful workshops with children from Sun Hill Infants school, junior school and Perins – and also residents of Makins Court and the houses surrounding the park. Feria Urbanism, our community engagement partner has now created concept designs.

GOVERNMENT Steve Brine M.P The period since half-term has been rather full-on as the true scale of the Covid-19 outbreak reveals itself. Clearly this is a fastmoving situation but you can expect to see/ hear your MP, as the former Public Health Minister, on the media a fair bit and I will be supporting Ministers so long as they maintain a staged, cool-headed response to whatever the virus brings next. Alongside fellow MPs from the area, I have also been dealing with the lead up to – and fall out since – the collapse of FlyBe. The failure of the airline is awful news for Hampshire and, especially of course, for those who face an uncertain future with their jobs as a result. Other airlines picking up some of the routes are welcome it’s worth

The County Council declared a cross party Climate Change emergency earlier this year. This month a Council Climate strategy has been published, consisting of a series of measures to tackle the reduction of the Council’s own carbon footprint, ways to help the public make their own changes, a number of projects to mitigate the possible effects of a possible 4 deg C rise in temperatures and the associated climate changes we would endure (eg a better drainage plan).

Controversially, though the strategy has many useful actions, it does not have a deadline date. However it is clear that we must all play

noting FlyBe are responsible for 95% of flights from Southampton. Speaking in the House of Commons as the news became known I said it was obvious there is not a queue of airlines wanting to pick up the FlyBe routes but warned the company against blaming its failures solely on the coronavirus which has plunged the industry into even further uncertainty. The basic truth is, if FlyBe hadn’t ever existed, someone would have had to invent it because these routes cannot disappear entirely. Some of my constituents may not be ruing the quieter skies above but we’ve come to rely on the convenience of a local airport and local businesses were quick to tell me of their concerns.

this Government is prepared to do - what this Government can do - to change that given the importance we rightly place on regional connectivity.

So I am challenging Ministers to truly understand the FlyBe failure and to look at other parts of the world for help in protecting key short-haul regional travel. The model works brilliantly in the United States where regional airlines, often flying as franchises of the larger carriers, are large successful businesses but FlyBe clearly couldn’t make it work this side of the pond.

The Government need to consider why this is the case and consider, realistically, what

our part and I asked specifically how this can be dovetailed with Winchester (and other) District strategies which have recently been published: all are working towards similar outcomes. We really mustn’t duplicate our efforts. Projects include the forestation of a Country Park, more Electric Vehicle charging points on roadside parking places to add to those being installed by WCC in the city car parks and market towns, providing more plant based meals for school lunches and the relaxation of the ban on wind power on HCC land.

The County and City Councils are looking at ways we can increase Public Transport options, even if for only part of the journey (eg: by providing more Park and Ride).

Both the County and City district realise they are each responsible for less than 1% of the County emissions, so it is up to us to think how we can reduce the other 98%! The Local Plan is one of the levers to do this. Authors of websites like NewLeafAlresford.org and established groups like WinACC, Extinction Rebellion and Wilder Villages are being consulted about the Local plan. I hope you will get involved, perhaps even becoming a local ambassador for this area of the Council’s

The DFT’s promised review into regional air connectivity has just become more important than ever and you can rest-assured I will be closely involved and be working closely with Southampton Airport as a major employer – directly and via the supply chain - in this area.

I am also very mindful of the environmental aspects here and passionately believe it is for the industry, especially the short-haul regional players, to show the public the work they are doing on sustainable fuels and electric aircraft.

It is also the perfect way to make Easter gifts for friends and family. Avoid buying heavily overpackaged commercial Easter Eggs, and settle for a healthier alternative made with love and care.

Easter Simnel Cake

Simnel cakes have been known since at least medieval times. Simnel cake is a light fruitcake formerly eaten during the preEaster period , a traditional cake for Easter Sunday. Simnel cakes are often associated with Mothering Sunday, also known as Simnel-Sunday.

Equipment An 8 inch round deep (removable bottom) cake tin. Line it with a cake liner.

Method Create your marzipan by seiving the icing sugar into a bowl, add almonds and stir to combine. Add the lemon juice until the mixture starts to clump together. Knead until you have a ball of marizpan paste. Take some of the paste and roll it into a circle, place the baking tin ontop of the paste and cut out a circle. Set aside the remaining marzipan for later.

Pre-heat the oven 150C. Measure out the cake ingredients into a bowl and beat throughoughly until blended thoroughly.

Use half the mixture in the cake tin. Top with a layer of marzipan mixture, spoon the remaining cake mix on the top. Bake inthe oven for 2hrs (approx) until golden brown, cover the top of the cake whilst cooking if it is browning too quickly. Remove from the tin once cooked, leave to cool for 10 minutes before trying to remove from the tin. Once

CHARITY Hounds for Heroes fund raising Quiz event will celebrate St. George’s Day and the Best of British Food The Holiday Inn Winchester is to host a fourth special charity fund-raising event for Hampshire based charity Hounds for Heroes with their popular Quiz event, which this year will be held to also celebrate St.George’s Day on Thursday 23rd April.

The event will include a ‘Best of British Food’ fork buffet, with the hotel’s AA Rosette Award winning team presenting delicious British food at its best, including locally sourced produce.

“We are inviting teams of six to ten people to register for this special event and have their knowledge on all things English tested,” commented Sarah Waddington, Sales and Marketing Manager for the hotel. “The hotel has been sponsoring Hounds for Heroes for the last six years, providing free accommodation to injured service personnel and space for them to train with their new assistance dogs. The staff at the hotel just love hosting them and creating a real home from home for the veterans and of course making a fuss of the assistance dogs!”

“We are very proud to be able to help raise funds for this locally based charity who every day make a difference to injured service personnel across the UK,” continued Sarah Waddington.
