Alresford Rotary Fireworks Join the procession to an impressive fireworks display at Arlebury Park in Alresford this Bonfire Night. Alresford Rotary's annual Bonfire Night fireworks event will take place this year on Friday 1st November 2019. The evening will start at 7pm as usual when the torchlight procession leaves from the top of town on its way to Arlebury Park. The bonfire will be lit around 8pm, with the fireworks following. Food and refreshments will be available, as well as glow sticks.

IS PROGRESS BEING MADE WITH SAVING WILDLIFE ALONG THE RIVER ARLE? The importance of reversing the decline in wildlife in and along the Arle has been highlighted before in the Forum. Still beautiful to look at, these rare chalk streams are nonetheless being damaged by chemicals and over-abstraction of water. The Environment Agency and Natural England, the regulatory bodies and Southern Water seem to be doing little and even, then, only slowly!

In 2018, some 200 concerned residents were invited by the Alresford Society to join a new initiative called ‘The Friends of the Arle’. We met in St John’s church – the only community building with the space to host such a significant gathering – to begin the process of understanding what is going wrong with our chalk streams and what can be done about it. That event provided a vital overview of how pollutants in these seemingly crystal-clear waters harm the food chain and cause the decline in wildlife we see in and around the Arle, and all the other catchment areas of the Itchen & Test.

With the keen support of a knowledgeable group of local river keepers, fishermen, ecologists and land owners along the Arle, we then joined forces with the Hampshire & Isle of Wight Wildlife Trust to identify problems and set out plans for its ‘Watercress & Winterbournes ’ project. This has been funded in its initial, 18-month planning stage by the Heritage Lottery Fund and well-supported by the Upper Itchen Initiative, Salmon & Trout Conservation, Wessex Rivers Trust and others. They have the depth of knowledge and experience to make the scientific case but also need the input of communities to take practical action.

The initial planning stage has now been completed. We had wanted to get on and do things … but have had to bide our time whilst the Wildlife Trust has gathered input from community groups in all seven catchment areas, including the Arle, Cheriton and Candover. In the meantime, though, we have been able to try out sampling kits to test water quality, and count freshwater shrimps and other creatures that are at the bottom of the food chain (counts that are much lower than they should be) and map access routes along the river.

Now, though, a bid for second stage funding that will implement the plans has just been put to the Lottery Fund. It is a competitive bid, so even now, it will take until next spring for final decisions to be made.

It is hoped, though, that funding can provide for a range of initiatives

that can, gradually, restore the natural balance of the river, reinstate the food chain damaged by pollutants, and encourage new wildlife.

If the bid is successful, we will see plans rolled out to monitor the river’s health and create better understanding of the interconnectiveness of different creatures: from tiny water beasties, to fish, to birds, and land animals. Guided (and self-guided) walks will help us to better value our heritage: the vital links between the river and the town, and how and why Alresford’s growth has been dependent on the river over centuries. Improving access to the river has also been key, providing the opportunity to walk and see what is going on. In places, as you will know, the footpath along the Arle at the bottom of Alresford is eroded to a width of little more than 18 inches where banks are broken and deteriorating almost daily. And there will also be education to reduce needless water usage and the ground water pollution that seeps into the river because of over-use of chemical cleaners.

Initially, it had been hoped that restoration of Alresford Pond (removing some, at least of the thick, phosphate and nitrate-laden sediment), would be included in the plans, identified as it was by the Wildlife Trust as a ’signature project’. But it has proven too complex and too costly for this project, which must share some £2.5m amongst all seven catchment communities. Natural England, though, is still exploring this as a separate initiative.

THE AMAZING HABITAT OF THE SOUTH DOWNS

I

t was World Habitat Day on Monday 7 October. Around the world, habitat is under threat and with it the species that they support.

You might not realise it at first but the South Downs National Park is home to rare habitat and species, some of which is globally important.

CHALK GRASSLAND Chalk grassland is one of the richest habitats in western Europe, containing a great diversity of species.You can find up to 50 species per square metre! This habitat has developed through centuries of sheep grazing on the shallow, free draining soils that cover the chalk. Once common over the South Downs, it now only covers an estimated four per cent of the National Park.

CHALK STREAMS There are only 200 chalk streams in the world and 160 of these are in the UK with the majority in southern England. The River Meon and River Itchen in the South Downs National Park are fine examples of these rare streams, which are important for wildlife as well as for fishing.

It’s the combination of geology and climate that give chalk streams their distinctive clear water. The good quality water together with the gravels of the river bed, provide habitat for an abundance of insects which provide food for fish. The well vegetated banks with plants such as watercress, give fish and other wildlife places to shelter from predators and forage for food. Our chalk streams are an important habitat for riverfly, brown trout, bullhead, otter, water vole, kingfisher and water shrew.

HEATHLAND Lowland heath is an internationally rare habitat. Heathers are the main type of plant, but you’ll also find birch, gorse, purple moor grass and scots pine. The UK has 20 per cent of the world’s total heathland habitat, though what we have left today is less than a fifth of what was

here 200 years ago.

In the South Downs National Park heathland develops on the Lower Greensand to the north of the chalk downs. The plants have adapted to survive on poor soils and dry or waterlogged conditions. Our heaths support a variety of wildlife such as nightjar, Dartford warbler, smooth snake, sand lizards, silver studded blue butterflies and heath tiger beetles.

The National Lottery Heritage Fund supported Heathlands Reunited project is working with partners to recreate, restore and reconnect lowland heath in the South Downs with the goal of creating an area of heathland greater than 1,200 football pitches.Visit Black Down, near Haslemere to see a fine heath with superb views across the National Park. At 280m it is the highest point in the South Downs National Park.

WOODLAND The South Downs has more woodland – including the semi-ancient Kingley Vale yew forest – than any other National Park in England or Wales, with the abundance of trees forming a vital component of the ecosystem and landscape. Light needs to reach plants and flowers on the forest floor to ensure they can in turn support the animals which rely on them for habitats and food.

Conserving this precious treescape is not without its challenges. Pests and diseases such as ash dieback and Dutch elm disease are growing concerns across the country and will likely change our landscape dramatically. But, through active management and maintaining a good diversity of tree species, we can significantly improve the chances for our native trees and ensure future generations of people, plants and wildlife can enjoy healthy woodland.

Local food and drink producers have had the opportunity to pitch their products to four members of the Local Flavours buying team of Southern Co-op thanks to Hampshire Fare. This special 'Pig Den' event, was held on 15 October at Rownhams House, near Romsey, was inspired by BBC TV’s Dragons Den while referencing the Hampshire Hog - Hampshire Fare’s motif.

Independent retailer Southern Co-op has a business ethos that focuses on sustainability and supporting local communities including a range dedicated to regional produce – Local Flavours.

Matt Elliott from Southern Co-op explained that they were keen to source more suppliers for the Local Flavours range which is continuing to grow in response to consumer demand. The event provided an opportunity for producers to approach the team and establish a supportive relationship. Tracy Nash, Commercial Manager, Hampshire Fare, who organised the 'Pig Den' event, helped producers prepare by providing pitching guidance.

PEACE BY PIECE AT O2 GUILDHALL SOUTHAMPTON Southampton Philharmonic Choir are pleased to present an inspirational programme of music that sums up a promise of hope from two composers and their view on how they would like the world to be today. The concert takes place at O2 Guildhall Southampton on Saturday 30 November 2019 at 7.30pm.

Karl Jenkins The Peacemakers is a large-scale classical work for soprano soloist, chorus, children’s choir and orchestra. The music is classical and very approachable, with world music and jazz influences.

The combination of two choirs, wonderful percussion writing and instrumental detail, makes The Peacemakers an international statement of epic proportions. The huge variety of styles, textures and musical material that Jenkins has managed to weave together into a coherent and emotional tour de force produces a profound impact. The work is rapidly becoming as popular and well-known as The Armed Man. The programme also includes Jenkins' composition for string orchestra, Palladio, written in 1995 and Will Todd's No more sorrow, written for chorus, strings, piano and harp in 2014.

Jenkins' inspiration was the 16th-century architect, Andrea Palladio reflecting the mathematical harmony and order of Palladio's architecture in musical form. Todd's gentle and lyrical No more sorrow is a setting of words from the biblical Book of Revelation: Todd writes, ‘When I wrote this piece it felt as if it came in response to the recovery of my daughter from long term illness. The inspirational text suggests a promise of hope beyond dark times.’

WELLBEING COMMUNITY Jan Field.The main criterium was the involvement of the many local voluntary organisations and they succeeding in this object with 25 such organisations setting up stalls to advertise their work and activities.

These were well set out and nicely displayed and very much impressed our main guests.

These stalls were complimented by the local bell ringers "Charmborough Ringers " and by a selection of vintage cars/bus which attracted many viewers.

THE 150TH ANNIVERSARY OF THE GIFT OF THE AVENUE The 150th anniversary of the gift of the Avenue by the Right Reverend Charles Sumner,Bishop of Winchester on 23rd September1869 was celebrated by both The Town Trustees and residents of Alresford.

Charlie Patey (a resident of Old Alresford, ex Perins student and medical student at Southampton University) has just competed in the British Gymnastics Tumbling Championships 2019 held in Birmingham Arean last weekend. Charlie gained a bronze medal. Charlie has been competing since he was 10 years old and despite suffering numerous set-backs and injuries over the years, has finally achieved medal success taking home a bronze at the weekend.

Charlie trains with Basingstoke Gymnastics Club and considers himself especially fortunate to have access to world class coaches and facilities at the club. And despite a heavy study schedule as a second year medical student he also manages to train up to 16 hrs a week at Basingstoke. Charlie chose Southampton University specifically so he could continue to train and study at the club.

It is estimated that over 500 local people attended the celebrations during the 3 hour event whose chief guest was the current Bishop of Winchester ,The Right Reverend Tim Dakin accompanied by his wife Sally.

The Bishop made a strong speech in urging the planting of new trees to help the climate change effect and was keen to plant a new young Lime tree as the centre point of the celebrations.

those first 2 or 3 disappointments, Alresford Rugby Club has really shown our true yellow, black and green colours. At the time of going to print, the 1st XV have beaten Havant RFC and Ellingham and Ringwood RFC and the 2nd XV comfortably beat Kingsclere.

The rugby season is off and running, Some pretty good rugby is going on in Japan(weather permitting), and also here in Alresford.

ARFC began a new and difficult season with a fresh coaching set up.

Amongst many issues, this involved a balance of retaining current players and the recruitment of more numbers. Moving forward into two stronger leagues, the coaches have worked tirelessly to keep both sides competitive, and this means 'numbers'.

The boys came back in July to be prepared and ready, but the opening league fixtures weren't kind to us. Our initial results reflected the difference between those that can call upon a large player base and others that aren't so fortunate. However, despite early disparity with players numbers we gave those top sides games to remember. Since

Grease a 6-inch pudding basin, fill it with the mixture, cover the top of the basin with greaseproof paper (greased on the underside) with a layer of cooking foil over it, tied on with string.

Steam in a steamer over a pan of boiling water for 7 hours and keep checking the pan to make sure it doesn’t boil dry. olting down a bacon sandwich, he’s stood in his kitchen by the rayburn.The setting of the 200 year old cob cottage, up a track and in a clearing in the woods is enviable, idyllic even. The golden thatch was recently renewed, it’s been re-plumbed and rewired – and there’s no shortage of logs for the woodburner in the beamy sitting room. It’s his home and he feels fortunate, but it’s not his house. It comes with his job. He’s a Keeper.

Mid September - first shoot day. Starting with partridge, moving onto pheasant late October - and there’ll be several shoots a fortnight from now until February. The culmination of the full-on seven days a week job nurturing the poults that arrived months before; feeding and protecting them from predation and disease. Coughing and ‘snicking’ means gapes, mustard coloured poo brings bad news of coccidiosis maybe, or hexameta – the list goes on. And on. Then there’s bad weather – and the Keeper, even with the greatest of care, can’t control that. Small wonder there’s a saying “The birds’ll die of everything before they’re shot.”

But he’s already been out on his quad at first, misty light; checking the birds, checking the numbered pegs in the fields for the guns to stand by, checking too that the landrover’s fuelled up and hitched to the beaters’ wagon. Also a stressful encounter with a walker who regularly lets his dog run through the woods away from any public footpath. A wayward pet can rid a drive of all the game - and the Guns, paying good money for their sport, won’t be impressed. And the estate owner will want to know why.

Gulping down his coffee, he tells his wife “I’ve tried explaining, but he treats the countryside like it’s some sort of quaint theme park for walking his cross-breed in.” On this of all mornings, she can only sympathise and wish him luck. After taking the kids to school she’ll be back to join the beaters later, with the sausage rolls and fruit cake she’s made for elevenses.

Checking the weather forecast, she prays the rain will hold off until after the last drive’s whistle blows.

Christmas Day.The cottage is in its festive finery of red-berried holly and variegated ivy. A fir tree from the estate sits in the corner of the sitting room and twinkles with lights. The shooting season in full swing,Yule offers no respite.The Keeper’s checked the feeders that morning – and after lunch there’ll be the usual dusk tour around the boundaries with his dogs, keeping the birds from straying. The Boxing Day shoot looms and

although a less formal affair for the owner’s family and friends, the Keeper needs it to go well.

The ‘phone rings. Poachers have been spotted and it’s his duty to go and see what’s afoot, although he’s only just sat down with his family to their turkey dinner.

Turns out the gang in their pickup are coursing for hares with long dogs. The Keeper’s thankful that they’ve cleared off the estate before he arrives in his landrover. Must be the Christmas spirit, he smiles to himself, relieved. Returning to his lunch just in time for the Queen’s speech, he eats quickly to get out again before sunset.

February arrives in deep snow, but the game shooting’s over and the Keeper can ease up a bit once the season’s post mortem is done. The owner’s a decent bloke and they sit together in his study up at the big house, enjoying a very fine single malt and poring over the Game Book.

Like a salesman with targets to meet, it’s a numbers game and however convivial this may seem, a keeper is judged by his results. Each and every shoot day, the number of birds in the bag is recorded. At the end of season analysis, the number of birds released or ‘put down’ on the estate, versus the total number shot is calculated. The 45% return the Keeper’s achieved this season is better than average.What happened to the rest who didn’t end up in a game pie, casserole, or roasted and served with stuffing and bread sauce? Some will have wandered onto the roads, to be run over by motorists unwilling to slow down whilst the birds hop up onto the verge.

Some will have succumbed to disease. Others, neither quick nor wary enough, will have fed the foxes. Many more will strut around the fields in the Spring – the cock birds in their courting finery, gathering hens to their harem.

Verdict: it was a good season and everyone’s happy. The Keeper keeps his job and his home – he might even have a couple of weeks off to wind down from the hard work of the last eight months. Then there’s a long list of jobs to crack on with, not least a new pen for more birds. The owner’s so pleased that he’s expanding the shoot. More birds mean more shoot days.This gives more security for everyone; the game bird rearers, the caterers, the beaters and pickers up, the village pub and hotel – even the remote, local petrol station that’s largely kept going by the 4x4 trade.

More work and stress for him too. But this is the life he’s chosen and it’s not a bad one. He’s a Keeper..

ALRESFORD TOWN COUNCIL REPORTS COUNCILLOR VACANCY NEW COUNCILLOR New Alresford Town Council welcomed a new Councillor Jay Jones who was co-opted at the last Council meeting on 17th September 2019. Councillor Jones has a background in sales and marketing. He will join the Community and Tourism; Planning and Staffing Committees. Another vacancy has arisen and applications will be considered at the next Town Council meeting. The vacancies are due to the resignation of Lisa Griffiths and Bill Witchard.

We would like to thank them for their contribution to the Council and wish them good luck for the future.

RECYCLING IN ALRESFORD - MORE THAN JUST A DROP IN THE OCEAN?

Vicky highlighted that 25% of recycling is rejected due to contamination. To avoid this, all recyclable items should be thoroughly clean and dry.

Sellotape should be removed from cardboard. Plastic milk bottle lids should be removed or be inserted into the bottles.

If they are not removed when the plastic milk bottles are being crushed the lids become projectiles! Other lids cannot be recycled.

Waste unsuitable for recycling is safely burned to produce electricity (enough to power 52,000 homes) which allows 95.5% of household waste in Hampshire to be diverted from landfill. Future recycling initiatives could include the collection of food waste which could be composted or used to produce electricity.

BLOOMING MARVELLOUS The Council recently hosted a talk on recycling presented

by Vicky Beechey Head of Project Integra. Project Integra works in partnership with councils including Hampshire County Council and Winchester City Council to coordinate waste and recycling management.

Vicky gave an interesting and informative talk; and expertly fielded questions from an enthusiastic audience.

The results from the Parish in Bloom have just been announced and the town was awarded a silver gilt – (82 points) just four points shy of a gold. A fantastic result for our first year and well deserved. In his report, the judge commended “well presented” gardens, the repair of the planters at the entrance to Alresford by the Rotary Club and the “superb displays” of hanging baskets and troughs part funded by the

Council and kindly supported by shops, residents and Up the Pole sponsors. Congratulation and thanks to everyone who contributed to this success and we look forward to what can be achieved next year.

Following on from the popularity of his previous article, Garry Honey, a local resident with a passion for chalk stream protection, gives us a further insight into the health of River Itchen. Keep an eye out in future issues for more about this wonderful topic.

Watercress cultivation and chalk stream purity have been symbiotically linked for generations. I even once contemplated living the romantic dream of being a watercress grower myself. Nowadays it only makes economic sense to do this on an industrial scale: the big firms today find it more economical to combine watercress packing with other salad leaves and most of the large watercress firms are now salad packers as much as watercress cultivators.

While this makes business sense for them, it should require changeof-use permission from agricultural to industrial use on the site.

Unfortunately this doesn’t always happen, especially when the salad packing operation shares a site with an existing watercress farm, so the planning authority will not demand an Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) to identify potential hazards. An overstretched Environment Agency (EA) will gladly take the discharge water quality readings from the salad packer unless prompted to investigate further by a third party.

Switching from watercress cultivation to salad packing might appear to be a minor change in business type, but there is a substantial change in how the river is used within the business. Salad packing involves washing salad leaves brought in from other countries with soil that might contain traces of pesticides, herbicides and micro-organisms alien to the Itchen valley. Salad packing creates jobs and the businesses are welcome, but the environmental impact of their operation needs to be scrutinised more closely when applied within a fragile and protected ecosystem.

POLLUTION Salmon and Trout Conservation conducted tests to provoke the EA into monitoring water quality more carefully, especially in the upper Itchen. They commissioned studies of river health and aquatic life using an independent micro-biological analytical consultancy firm.

The report, which was published on 17 June 2019, found that salad washing was a problem for the river and the EA needed to act to stop the discharge of untreated effluent from salad packing. This has resulted in the EA seeking Bakkavor to cut the pesticides in its discharge to protect the future dividend of trout fishing.

ABSTRACTION Also working to protect local rivers is Fish Legal, a not-for-profit organisation that takes legal action to ensure the EA protects our rivers from over-zealous water companies who would abstract water to deliver shareholder value. In August 2018 the planning inspector refused an application by Southern Water for increased abstraction in the river Test. This doesn’t mean there will be no further abstraction applications: one was made for an ‘emergency’ drought permit in August 2019.

A MESSAGE FROM NEW ALRESFORD TOWN TRUST To all residents and shopkeepers in Broad Street. I would like to apologise for the disruption you all experienced on Wednesday and Thursday the 16th and 17th October when the Fair was in Broad Street.

A CAPTIVE AUDIENCE AT GODOLPHIN WELCOMED IMPRESSIVE LINE-UP OF AUTHORS FOR LITERARY FESTIVAL Godolphin's third Literary Festival opened with a talk on Queen Victoria by the TV presenter, Historic Royal Palaces curator and historian, Lucy Worsley. She did not disappoint, and her witty, exuberant delivery revealed the humanity and quirkiness of her subject. The audience was a mix of all ages and a testament to Lucy Worsley's talent at making history accessible; many of the questions came from the young who had clearly listened to every word and still wanted to know more. Lucy had a message of encouragement for one who asked about the number of books she had written, "I genuinely cannot remember, which is a great thing, and I hope that one day you will be standing up her saying the same thing!"

The festival continued with a Creative Writing workshop and a Poetry Evening organised by the girls and the English Department.

There were events during the day for pupils from across Salisbury and beyond and during the week almost 900 schoolchildren joined in events in the Performing Arts Centre and Library. Costa winning author Frances Hardinge chose the festival to launch her latest young adult novel, Deeplight, and she gave a fascinating explanation of the fears and loves that inspired her largely submerged tale about a world beneath the waves. Fleur Hitchcock came to speak about her gripping mysteries which appeal to 9-12 year olds; her books are full of action and she was a great hit with Godolphin pupils and many visiting schools. Laura James hosted a smaller event in the school library to talk about her two series for younger children, Fabio the Flamingo Detective and The Adventures of Pug. She encouraged pupils from Godolphin Prep and across Salisbury to invent their own detective series and played with wonderful collective nouns, a flamboyance of flamingos, a tower of giraffes and a crash of rhinos, to name but a few.

Salisbury's very own thriller writer and Godolphin parent, Mark Dawson, came to chat to older students about the business process of producing great fiction. As he explained, it is not just about having an idea and being able to write it down, there is a whole publishing industry to comprehend and his understanding of publishing online combined with his story telling talent has made him the master of Ebook fiction.

There were two more evening events open to the public, and particularly well attended was the broadcaster and dramatist Lynne Truss' discussion of her writing career and her latest comic detective series. The grand finale of the festival was Joa Studholme's inspirational talk about colour in interior design, for many years she has been Farrow & Ball's chief colourist, inventing colours and giving advice to customers across the world. Her books on colour are sumptuously printed and she encouraged many art students interested in pursuing a career in the world of interior design.

This was wholly caused by the WCC Traffic Wardens coning off the parking spaces before the allotted time shown on the Road Closure Notice. The Fair lorries were also at fault for coming in too early.

This has been taken up with the Fair organisers.

Regrettably I have been in hospital for the past 5 weeks, and only came home on 16th October after the disruption had occurred.

The normal letter and Permit for residents was never handed out because I was in hospital.

Once again, my sincere apologies on behalf of the Town Trust, and hope this was just a “one off ”.

FEATURE Hawk-moth. This species has an unusually long proboscis (tongue) which allows it to feed on tubular flowers like tobacco plants.

Participants in Moth Night are being asked to be on the lookout for both the Convolvulus Hawk-moth and the Clifden Nonpareil in order to help scientists learn more about their increasing numbers in the UK. Richard Fox, Associate Director of Recording and Research at Butterfly Conservation said: “Moth Night was a wonderful opportunity to get face-to-face with the UK’s magnificent moths including, if you are really lucky, the Clifden Nonpareil, and to contribute important data.”

HOLY GRAIL OF MOTHS REAPPEARS IN BRITAIN Numerous recent sightings of a moth that became extinct in the UK in the 1960s, suggest that it has recolonised and is now breeding across southern Britain.

The Clifden Nonpareil, whose name means ‘beyond compare’, is one of the largest and most spectacular moths native to our shores.

With a wingspan that can reach almost 12cm and a bright blue stripe across its black hindwings (which gives rise to an alternative name of the Blue Underwing), this species has long been regarded as a holy grail among moth enthusiasts.

Immigrant moths from continental Europe appear to have re-established breeding colonies of this impressive insect in recent years, in south coast counties of England.

People are being asked to look for this moth and record any sightings as part of the annual Moth Night, an event run every year by Atropos, Butterfly Conservation and the Centre for Ecology & Hydrology. This year the event celebrates its 20th anniversary.

As part of this coming Moth Night on 26-28 September 2019 dedicated moth recorders and members of the public

are being asked to survey moths and to submit their sightings via the website.

Public events are also being held across the country to raise awareness of the importance and beauty of moths.

Moth Night founder and editor of Atropos, Mark Tunmore, said: “September is a special time for studying moths in the British Isles with a colourful range of resident species mixing with more exotic species from Europe or even North Africa as warm air currents sweep them northwards. Already this year we have received reports to our migrant insect news service, Flight Arrivals, of Clifden Nonpareil sightings from Cornwall, Devon, Sussex, Warwickshire, Suffolk, Dorset, Kent, Norfolk, Somerset and Northamptonshire.

“Some of these are likely to be immigrants and some part of the recently established resident populations. When we started Moth Night 20 years ago this moth was a very rare immigrant but it is now becoming familiar to moth enthusiasts across southern Britain. This illustrates just how quickly change can take place and that’s why moths are such a fascinating group of insects to study.

“Coming at the peak of the Clifden Nonpareil season, Moth Night 2019 is a fantastic opportunity to map the current range of this species in Britain.”

Another exciting migrant species being recorded this autumn is the Convolvulus

“The Clifden Nonpareil is a fantastic addition to our wildlife, and it is great to know that it is resident again in the UK, after an absence of 40 years or so.

Its caterpillars feed unnoticed up in the canopies of Aspen and poplar trees, so the adult moths are the best indication of how widely-established this species now is.

ALRESFORD DISTRICT NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH The Alresford and District Neighbourhood Watch Association AGM was held on Tuesday October 8th at Alresford Golf Club.

We were pleased to welcome John Dick from CrimeStoppers, giving his very last presentation before retirement.

CrimeStoppers is an independent charity, partly funded by the Home Office and totally separate from the Police. Anyone can contact CrimeStoppers by phone, or online to report a crime or suspicious incident, completely anonymously, without having to give any personal details. All valid calls will be passed to the Police for action, often within minutes of receipt.

We receive numerous complaints that the Police 101 service is not satisfactory, mainly of long delays in answering. Some of this is due to the cutbacks. Staffing covers both 999 and 101, with 999 taking priority. The Police do have to take some personal details, to minimise the repeat–call timewasters.

CrimeStoppers offers an easy alternative to 101, as they do not ask for any of your details. It is much used to report drivers over the drink limit and suspicions of drug dealing.

Alresford does have anti-social behaviour and drug incidents, all of which should be reported to the police; 101 or via CrimeStoppers. Please do tell the Police, don’t just post it on social media.You will not necessarily receive a response, but the report will allow them to record where incidents are happening and direct their resources as appropriate. Incidents can now be reported to the Police on-line and from your mobile. Use REPORT or TELL US ABOUT from the home page at https:// www.hampshire.police.uk Association Chairman Colin Harris gave a background to Neighbourhood Watch, from its beginnings in the US and then in Cheshire, following on with ADNWA which started in 1990 and so, is coming up to its 30th anniversary next year. The role is not arduous now, as this Forum article has replaced the hardcopy newsletters that had to be delivered door to door. However, the Co-ordinator does need to be aware of the needs of his watch residents, especially the vulnerable ones, but it is mainly a point of contact that we can send incident reports to and who can give advice when asked for it.

There were magnificent fireworks at the Worthys Festival this year: in fact the whole Festival was a testament to everyone who volunteered to provide free events not only

October’s Rural Policing Event at Sparsholt College was well attended, and very good.

Inspector Korine Bishop, lead on Rural Crime, gave an excellent talk, and the Crown Prosecution Service explained what evidence from a ‘good witness’ looked like. Discussions included marking all goods of value, and I raised the legal use of CCTV to protect communities: I’ll be feeding this back to villages determined to beat the current flood of car thieves. Most importantly, please report crime first to the Police, not just on facebook!

Hampshire County Council talked about fly-tipping. Whilst there, I met Michael Montague who has set up www.ClearWaste. com. He started the site (there is an app too) as a way to combat the non-reporting of fly-tipping, and the difficulty of identifying the exact location in rural areas. It’s especially useful in rural areas: you can snap it, then

THE ARTS SOCIETY ALRESFORD (formerly NADFAS) is looking to appoint an IT proficient person or persons to set up a laptop, projector and sound system for its monthly lectures given by visiting speakers, normally using Powerpoint presentations. All equipment is provided.The lectures take place in the afternoons of the 4th Tuesday in each month (except in August and December) in Itchen Abbas village hall and on two whole days, one in Spring and one in Autumn in Alresford.

The Town Trust organised 4 events for the Heritage Open Day Weekend on 14/15th September. The weather was ideal and Alresford was a very busy and happy Town. The Brocante Market organised by Jackie Edwards was a real success attended by several thousand visitors, who were able to see 35 dealers enthusiastically selling their wares.

There was a large array of choice on offer and a great atmosphere was created by both stallholders and visitors, who flocked in from early morning till late afternoon. This was the second Brocante Market of the year, with the Trustees agreeing to hold 2 such markets in 2020, on 4th May and 13th September 2020.

The County has declared a Climate Change Emergency too, but the County Council’s Highways mending criteria of ‘Tennis-Ball-deep and Car-Wheel-wide’ means that many holes do not get repaired, even if requested. Local cyclist and resident Steve Cramoysan is helping to compile a list of places which need repair for better cycling. The Museum was opened on both days, attracting 518 visitors; many of these were children who were able to try on helmets (see picture attached) and sit on the Merryweather Fire Engine. There were visitors from France, Germany, Holland, China, America as well as various parts of the UK. Tim Barnes had a special “Lady Luck” section which was well attended – see picture attached. Peter Bridges green vintage MG was also on display and created a lot of interest.

The Bridge had an identical number of 518 visitors, with Caroline Perry’s agreement to show off the Bridge built in 1190, from her special garden. Many residents in Alresford were able to see this special Bridge and garden for the very first time. The Eel House had 281 visitors, bringing the total for the year to 1229 and the cumulative total since opening 10 years ago to 9382.

In total the donations to the Trust for the 4 events amounted to £646, which will go towards the Market, Eel House restoration and Museum Fund.
