Bespoke Kitchens & Interiors

Bespoke sizing - Media walls, boot rooms, custom offices, installed by ex-shipwright joiners with exceptional attention to detail
Happy Kitchens have a unique approach when it comes to kitchens and custom spaces in the home. We use excellent quality materials which are fitted by exshipwright joiners, who used to fit the woodwork on Super Yachts. That in itself is unique in our industry but then add in the fact that we are bespoke, but don’t charge the inflated prices that your highend high street showrooms do, gives us the recipe for your perfect home solution. This is why we are one of the highest rated home improvement companies on HOUZZ, beating all the top names you might recognise when walking down your high street.
We have never had less than a 5 star
review and have won the HOUZZ best of service award every year since it has been running. The staff at HOUZZ reference us to other companies as to how customer service should be done. Many of our customers have used us 2 or 3 times due to moving house or tackling other projects in their existing houses.
We do not have a template for design and take a fresh approach with every customer. It is important to take all the best ideas a customer has, then bring in the experience we have to offer, and often our ideas will be completely different to any other companies as we are innovative and bespoke. We often hear that customers have had designs and quotes that all look the same, are boring and

un-exciting, yet expensive. This is because most high street ‘kitchen designers’ are just salespeople with no idea on how a kitchen works.

So whether you need an amazing Kitchen, Utility, Bedroom, Coffee Bar with custom pod storage, Office, Media Wall or Living Room storage we can help. The design visits are free of charge, and we can quote on the same day. Also Ben loves design, so often at no extra charge, he will help you choose paint colours,

The biggest compliment we get from our customers is always around our attention to detail and often bringing something completely different to the table. If you are still unsure after reading this, go and read some of our reviews on our Happy Kitchens Houzz profile, and do a search of kitchen companies on there by review rating, we are always close to the top of the list.
Out-of-the-box thinking, bespoke design features, and friendly staff with excellent attention to detail are just a few of the reasons you should call us today. If that isn’t enough please do remember that the design visit is free of charge, so you have nothing to lose.

Alresford Rotary
People of Action in the Community!
Following a period of relative inactivity in the first quarter of 2025 it’s been a busy few weeks for the members and friends of Alresford Rotary.
At the end of March as part of New Alresford Town Council’s litter picking initiative we tidied along Tichborne Down, Winchester Road, the Cheriton Road (past the golf club) and New Farm Road. Why is that litter there in the first place?
On 1st April Alresford Rotary met Bishops Waltham and Winchester Rotary clubs at The Phoenix in Twyford for an enjoyable social evening and skittles match. One year, about 20 years ago, Alresford Rotary won the Wessex District skittles competition involving some 60 clubs. This time we came third in a field of three – room for improvement! Our excuse is that our star player was taken ill in the middle of the evening.
Early in the morning on April 6th as Alresford Rotary carried out what has become a regular annual attempt to spruce up Broad Street. In just a couple of hours gutters and kerbs and drain covers were cleared with the mud and other “arisings” collected filling two large “grab bags” kindly supplied by New Alresford Town Council.

In the past few years Alresford Rotary has done “outdoor works” at both Perins and the Sun Hill schools. Last month a day was spent at Sun Hill including tidying up the nature pond and its surrounds (created by Alresford Rotary some twenty years ago)

and installing a water feature. Further work will be carried out later this year.
On 11th April Alresford Rotary hosted “Probably mid Hampshire’s Quiz of the Year 2025” at which 19 teams demonstrated an admirable knowledge of matters trivial and otherwise with “Ferrets Forever” claiming victory for the second year running.

and Keith Moon? The proceeds of the evening will be shared

between Wessex Heartbeat and ShelterBox. As well as thanking Wessex Heartbeat for donating a hamper as a raffle prize we are also very grateful for the support of IVC, the Flowerpots, the Eco Winchester Bike Hub, Soles Butchers and the Academy of Beauty Therapy for their support. The event sold out by the end of March justifying our message to “Book early to avoid disappointment”!
Looking ahead preparations are well under way for the 18th Alresford 10 k run on 15th June which will be a busy day as the monthly Hampshire Farmers market, the Alresford Pigs Association Duck race and the New Alresford Town Trust Open Day will all also be happening. Its also not too early to do something about supporting the annual Rotary Wessex Shoebox Christmas scheme for disadvantaged and displaced children in eastern Europe. The relevant scheme leaflets and suggested knitting patterns are available now!
Interested in Rotary?
If you are interested in being involved with Alresford Rotary on an occasional or regular basis we’d love to hear from you! Help us to become a younger and more diverse group of “people of action”!
We’re looking for marshals for the 10k run. Are you interested in helping us? – perhaps your child or grandchild is at Perins or Sun Hill and you’d like to help us there. If you’re a local business that would like to be involved with your local community ask us about “Rotary corporate membership”. It's a new way for Rotary clubs to engage with local businesses and organizations, and for businesses to participate in Rotary activities for the benefit of the local community!

An update from Alresford Bowling Club
The club opened its doors on 26 April for our Opening Day and members enjoyed their first games of the season. The fun afternoon commenced with a prize for the nearest member to reach the spider and with a bottle of wine on offer, competition was fierce! A bring and share tea was enjoyed after the matches whilst members chatted and dissected their individual bowling form or lack of it! It’s the start of the season – plenty of time to improve!
Did you know that, in ‘A History of the Alresford Bowling Club’ by Lesley Drew the club is reputed to be the second oldest bowling club in Hampshire? Sadly this cannot be proven as there was a break in its activities between the two world wars and records only date back from the club’s reformation at the end of 1937. However, there is evidence of the green in a copy of The Hampshire Chronicle dated August 1823 which states that ‘The Gentlemen of the bowling green held their annual festival at The Sun Inn, Alresford, which was most numerously and respectably attended’. It is worth noting that women have been playing bowls since around the 1900s and we currently have twenty six women members out of a total of sixty four. The club holds a Ladies v Gentlemen’s Tournament each year which is always fun and in which the women hope to reign supreme at some point!
It is said that bowls is an easy game to learn but takes a lifetime to master. So have you ever considered playing bowls but for a variety of reasons have not made that first step or are you an experienced player wishing to join a local club? Well now is the perfect time to come along and have two free trials at this very friendly local club. We have members with a variety of bowling skills who are only too willing to share their knowledge and love of the game with you. Don’t worry if you haven’t got any bowls, the club has some which you are welcome to use until you decide to purchase your own. Dress is informal, although flat soled shoes are required when playing bowls in order to protect the green, although if you wanted to play in matches then we do ask that you wear smart grey trousers, skirts or shorts and a white top. We have bowling arms too which assist those who are struggling to reach longer lengths on the green.

Roll-ups are on Tuesday and Thursday mornings between 10am and noon with a break for refreshments at 11am, and Thursday evenings with a social element at 6pm too, at a cost of £3, once a member. A bargain price for a couple of hours entertainment and refreshments! The club offers non-playing memberships too. If you would like more information, please do contact Lindsey, the Secretary at alresfordbowls@gmail.com she would love to hear from you. Your bowling journey and a warm welcome awaits!

Gardening Tips for May
By Jill Walmsley, Education Trustee of Hampshire Gardens Trust
May is a month of real progress and promise in the garden. At the Hampshire Gardens Trust, we’re committed to nurturing an appreciation for our horticultural heritage - but that starts with our own outdoor spaces. With warmer temperatures, longer evenings, and plants bursting into life, May is the perfect time to be outside, fine-tuning your garden and preparing for a summer of colour, produce, and wildlife. Here are some seasonal tips to help your garden flourish this month.
1. Plant Out Tender Plants
By mid to late May, the risk of frost has usually passed across most of the UK. This means you can safely plant out tender annuals, vegetables, and bedding plants that were started indoors. Think tomatoes, courgettes, runner beans, and summer flowers like petunias and marigolds. Harden off seedlings first by gradually introducing them to outdoor conditions over a week.
2. Support Climbing Plants
Fast-growing climbers such as sweet peas, clematis, and runner beans will need support as they shoot upward. Install canes, trellises, or wigwams early to avoid disturbing roots later. Tie in stems gently with twine to help guide their growth.
3. Sow Successive Crops
For a steady harvest throughout the summer, sow quick-growing crops like lettuce, spinach, radishes, and carrots every few weeks. This ensures you won’t have a glut all at once and keeps your veg patch productive.
4. Prune Spring-Flowering Shrubs
Once shrubs like forsythia, chaenomeles, and flowering currants have finished blooming, prune them back to encourage strong new growth and plenty of flowers next year. Remove any dead or crowded branches and shape the plant gently.
5. Mulch for Moisture
As the weather warms, moisture loss becomes an issue. Mulch your borders and veg beds with compost, bark chips, or well-rotted manure to help retain water, suppress weeds, and keep the soil healthy.
6. Deadhead for More Blooms
Regularly deadhead spring and early summer flowers such as tulips, daffodils, and pansies to keep beds tidy and encourage new blooms. This helps the plant conserve energy and can extend the flowering period.
7. Keep an Eye on Pests
As plants become more lush, so do pests. Watch out for aphids on roses,
caterpillars on cabbages, and slugs around young seedlings. Use natural pest control methods where possible—introduce beneficial insects, use barriers, or try organic sprays if needed.
8. Mow Mindfully
Grass grows quickly in May, so regular mowing is necessary—but try not to cut it too short. Leave a patch uncut or mow paths through longer grass to support insects and wildflowers. It’s also “No Mow May,” a movement encouraging gardeners to let their lawns grow wild to benefit pollinators.
9. Water Wisely
Start watering more consistently, especially new plantings, pots, and hanging baskets. Early morning or evening is the best time to water, reducing evaporation. Use water butts or recycled household water to conserve resources where possible.
10. Plan Garden Visits & Get Inspired
May is a wonderful time to visit gardens across Hampshire and beyond. Seeing planting combinations, structural features, and mature trees in different settings can inspire fresh ideas for your own space. The Hampshire Gardens Trust runs events, lectures, and open garden days that offer plenty of inspiration and learning opportunities.
Bonus Tip: Prepare for Pollinators
Include nectar-rich plants such as lavender, foxglove, alliums, and catmint to attract bees and butterflies. Creating a wildlife-friendly corner—even a small one—helps support biodiversity and brings added movement and beauty to your garden.
May is a rewarding and lively month for gardeners. From planting out summer crops to deadheading spring blooms, it’s a time of nurturing and planning. With a little regular care and thoughtful planting, your garden will reward you with colour, produce, and wildlife through the months ahead.
If you’re keen to connect with other garden lovers or learn more about garden history and horticulture, why not become a member of Hampshire Gardens Trust? Visit hgt.org.uk to explore lectures, open garden events, and performances throughout the summer.

Jackie’s County Corner

The County Council has another savings consultation: the response deadline is 11:59pm on the 7th May. They are consulting on their proposal to save £9.9 million by cutting budgets for four services: highway maintenance, introducing new criteria increasing transport costs to schools and colleges and removing three Older Adults Day care units (including at Chesil Lodge in Winchester).
Highway maintenance is a constant topic of conversation, and all of these budget cuts will hit residents in this division, but so far, response rates have been low.
School transport costs will apply to more children: so please look and see if you will be affected in the future. If you’d like to respond one or all of the proposals, please go to hants.gov.uk, and click on the the right hand block on the front page where there is direct link to ‘Future Services Consultation Spring 2025’ Please contact me if you are worried by the impact of this on your household budget.
Annual Parish meetings are coming up. These are opportunities for you to talk with your Parish Council. Have you considered being a Parish Councillor? It’s a voluntary role, but very interesting and an opportunity to get involved with the whole community.
Thank you to everyone who provided photographs of dreadful potholes this month. Road and footway faults can only be reported online at present, so please report first to get a tracking number. When I have that number I can chase up if the repair takes too long, or help you to claim.
Good news: the 75 bus from Andover to Winchester through Sutton Scotney, South Wonston and Worthy Down now operates on Sundays too. It is good to see this new service becoming viable as it draws from a wider population.
The road connecting the north and south in Kings Barton is finally open to vehicles. It is a momentous moment. The KB1 minibus won’t need to run the long detour in and out of the development at last. If you are interested in using a minibus for your community, there are charities that can run a bus for you ‘to order’. Contact me if you need help with this.
You may recall that the County closed several care homes a few years ago, citing an expansion programme of three modern nursing homes which would be in more sustainable locations. The costs have proved too high for HCC who already have a financial crisis on their hands, with SEND children and Adult Social care, and in late March, they called a halt to their £173m programme. Unfortunately, the Cornerways/Merrydale site is a victim of this and we await new plans for this brownfield land in the Worthys.
It was exciting to see the EV charging site at Three Maids Hill start operation on March. Winchester has always been at the forefront of public EV charging, and this site offers good off-peak rates as well as a playground, refreshments and toilets. This site uses greener electricity and sits alongside the other companies : energy generators, with a field of solar panels, and an anaerobic digester: we are truly going greener faster in this division.

A Warnford Church and WI Fundraising Event for The Rosemary Foundation
Afternoon Tea in the Park - 11th May 2025

On the 11th May, Warnford Park will be hosting for the first time, “Afternoon tea in Warnford Park”. Come and tour the park in its late spring magnificence! You will be able to wander around the Capability Brown designed pleasure gardens of Warnford Park; through the ancient ruins of St John's House and the woodland belt, past the Momento Mori arch, returning on the formal walk past the Summer House. Also, for the first time it will be possible to walk completely round the lake seeing untrodden parts and quite different views of the park.
A complimentary tea / coffee and slice of homemade cake will be served in the church by the ladies of our local WI branch whilst being entertained by music on the organ. Attendance is by pre-booked tickets only, to manage attendance and traffic carefully to ensure the best visitor experience possible.
Fundraising Aims
This is a fundraising event for Warnford Church and the local WI branch. In addition, all of the donations, and part of the income from this event will be used to support our local Rosemary Foundation, a local charity organisation dedicated to providing end-of-life care and support for patients and their families in Hampshire.
About The Rosemary Foundation
The Rosemary Foundation is a charity organisation dedicated to providing end-of-life care and support for patients and their families in Hampshire, England. With a mission to enhance the quality of life for those facing life-limiting illnesses, the foundation offers vital services such as nursing care, emotional support, and practical assistance to patients in the comfort of their own homes.
The Rosemary Foundation receives no government funding and relies solely on donations to be able to offer trained nurses day and night completely free of charge to those who need them.

I’m Buying Local and Backing Britain
Danny Chambers MP

Trump has launched a nonsensical and hugely damaging trade war across the entire world. The sheer scale of his attack means it will affect businesses here, even small businesses that don’t import or export to the USA. We need to rally in support of local businesses at risk from the economic shock caused by Trump’s delusional attack, including local farmers, high street shops and services.
Along with many of my Liberal Democrat colleagues, that’s exactly what I’m calling for. I say to everyone out there, to buy local and back British whenever you can to help us weather this Trump storm.
While it was good to see that the government is looking for ways to support the economy with some investments brought forward, they are still insisting on pushing ahead with their tax rises that will hit small businesses, hospices and social care providers. Now that we have the extra economic pressure from Trump to deal with, it really is indefensible to proceed with them. I’ve been calling on them to reverse the introduction of these measures and I fear the impact it will have on local businesses if they don’t listen.
Despite the economic situation, there is some good news for us locally. I recently attended the opening of a new electric vehicle charging superhub near Winchester. It will provide new jobs whilst making it easier for local people to make the choice to shift to cleaner electric vehicles. If we combine this with improvements to our bus services to and from the towns and villages around Winchester, we can help reduce congestion, clean up our air and reduce travel costs for everyone.
In March, we enjoyed some great English Tourism week events in Winchester. It was wonderful to attend the celebrations of the 250th anniversary of Jane Austen. I was delighted to join Visit Winchester to see how they were bringing people to the city to learn about the history and celebrate her legacy.
Finally, I’ve just returned from a journey across Europe during the parliamentary recess. I joined the International Christian Medical and Dental Association, Mighty Convoy, and the Christian Medical Association of Ukraine to drive a donated ambulance filled with vital medical supplies from London to Lviv. The supplies we delivered will help them treat both injured soldiers and civilians who have been targeted by Putin’s airstrikes across their cities. They’ve been fighting to stop Putin extending his ambitions further into Europe, so I believe we owe it to them to help in any small way we can.
If you have any issues I can help with please get in touch at danny.chambers. mp@parliament.uk
A Great Day Out for All the Family

On Father’s Day (Sunday June 15th) we will once again be running the Duck Race, so why not treat Dad to something different this year? You could maybe sponsor a duck, or a race, in his name - that would certainly be something he doesn’t have! You need to be quick though as quite a number have already been sponsored, so hurry, there’s no time to lose. Or you could just bring Dad and the rest of the family and come and have a great time - there will be a BBQ, a beer tent, teas, coffees, cake and even ice cream on sale. Maybe place a bet, or two, on your favourite duck with a chance to win BIG (well, win anyway!).
The Duck Race is always a fun day out and raises vital funds that we use to help those in need in the Alresford area.
Thank You Alresford!
A big thank you to everyone who ordered compost this year as the profit from this activity provides us with funds that we can use within the local community where and whenever needed.

Mr Mac - May News

Many areas still suffer from poor or non-existent broadband. Some have turned to Starlink’s satellite internet, which costs over £75 a month plus an upfront fee of £300. However, there’s often a waiting list due to high demand. A more affordable alternative is Rural Broadband, which installs an external antenna and uses 4G/5G to deliver a reliable service. It costs £99 to install and £42 a month. Feedback suggests it’s a dependable option. Contact them on 03333447700 or visit www.national-broadband.co.uk

When upgrading your phone, transferring WhatsApp to your new device can be done in just a few simple steps. However, it is essential to back up your chat history online beforehand. To do this, open WhatsApp, navigate to Settings, select Chats, and then tap Back Up Now. You’ll be glad you did.
The new 11” iPad (2025) is great value for money, especially since it skips AI (Artificial Intelligence) but packs in everything else you need. It’s more powerful than ever with the superfast A16 chip, a stunning Liquid Retina display, advanced cameras, fast Wi-Fi 6, a USB-C port, and comes in four fun colours all at a surprisingly friendly price.
So much for the promise of seamless iPhone setup. Someone recently told me their mobile phone retailer claimed the transfer from their old iPhone would take just 15 minutes. In fact, it takes well over an hour to do it properly and the staff neither have the time nor the interest to help thoroughly. While apps and your Apple ID details can be transferred, that’s just the start. A proper setup involves much more. Trust me, I do this regularly.

Know your future with cashflow modelling
‘Am I saving enough money?’ ‘When can I afford to retire?’ ‘How long will my pension last in retirement?’ Most of us have asked ourselves at least one of these questions. They’re difficult to answer because they not only depend on your individual circumstances – your current lifestyle, your existing financial position, your future plans – but also on events that may be outside your control, such as inflation and investment performance.
You don’t need a crystal ball to understand your future finances. By using cashflow modelling, a financial adviser can help provide clarity and help answer these all-important questions.
What is cashflow modelling?
Cashflow modelling helps you understand how long your money could last in retirement. Your adviser will provide you with a cashflow illustration, mapping your savings and investments, year by year.
The personalised illustration considers factors like your current saving and investing, spending patterns, target retirement date and future aspirations. It also factors in inflation, investment performance, and your life expectancy.
How could cashflow modelling help me?
Cashflow modelling provides a powerful insight into your future finances and can help you see if your goals are achievable and whether you need to make any changes to your plans or saving and investing habits.
What if my plans change?
Cashflow modelling is especially useful when it comes to exploring the impact of any potential changes to your plans. Your adviser can help you to ‘rehearse’ your future by exploring how different scenarios might affect your financial position.
Some of the scenarios may include:
• Delaying or bringing forward your target retirement date
• Taking more or fewer holidays in retirement
• Investing a greater proportion of your money in the stock market
• Accessing your pension via income drawdown instead of buying an annuity
• Gifting money to children and grandchildren
What happens next?
Once you’re clear on your future goals, your financial adviser can create a personalised financial roadmap to help you achieve your ambitions.
Cashflow modelling isn’t a once-and-done exercise. Circumstances change, and it’s important that these changes are reflected in your financial plan.
Life may feel uncertain, but your finances don’t have to be. To gain clarity over your future finances, book a consultation with one of our financial advisers today.
We live and work local to you. We would be delighted to help you and your family achieve financial clarity and stability.

St Swithun’s students join the fight against period poverty
Led by one of our sixth-formers, St Swithun’s students are helping in the fight against period poverty by sewing reusable period pads for refugees worldwide.
Lower-sixth student Miya G introduced The Pachamama Project—a volunteer-run initiative tackling period poverty in refugee crises—to St Swithun’s and now leads a lunchtime sewing club. Every Wednesday, students from Year 9 to Year 13 drop in to the textiles classroom to help create the pads, which will be distributed to communities in need across Ukraine, Uganda, Pakistan, Lebanon, South Sudan, and more.
“We’re supporting The Pachamama Project, which was started by university student Ella Lambert and her mum during lockdown,” Miya explained. “It’s been great to see students across the school get involved”.
To gather materials, Miya reached out to local businesses and community groups for fabric donations. Grateful for the community’s generosity, she said, “I received bags and bags of fabric from businesses or people who just love sewing and had spare material at home.”
Each pad is designed to last up to five years, with an inner lining made from anti-pill fleece. To fund this essential material Miya organised a school bake sale at breaktime and raised over £200.

have

worked together to complete more than 30 pads for their first shipment. Joanna M, another student involved in the project, said, “Anyone at school can get involved and help—it doesn’t matter if you have sewing skills or not. It’s easy to learn, and everyone feels good knowing they’re making a difference.”
The World Bank estimates that over 500 million young women and girls globally struggle daily to manage their menstrual health. By getting involved with The Pachamama Project, St Swithun’s students are not only learning new skills but are also playing a part in tackling this global epidemic.
St Swithun’s Headmistress, Jane Gandee, said, “We are passionate about providing an environment that prepares our students to go out and make their mark on the wider world. That involves not only achieving excellent academic results, but building confidence and resilience. In Miya’s case, she is already making a huge difference to communities in need and inspiring others to follow her lead.”
Head of Sixth Form, Nick Fyfe, commented, “We are always delighted to see our sixth form students pursuing volunteering opportunities with such passion and purpose. Leadership and concern for society are two of our six pillars of sixth form and Miya exemplifies both of those.”
In the sixth form at St Swithun’s, whatever a student’s interests might be, we help them to develop their character, skills, and self-confidence, so they can pursue their chosen pathway with curiosity, passion and mindfulness for the wider community.

750ML VEGETABLE STOCK

Prepare your vegetable stock in a saucepan and keep on a gentle simmer. In a separate large pan, fry the onion in plenty of oil until soft.
Add the thyme and green beans, allowing to soften a little before adding the risotto rice – this should absorb any moisture in the pan.
Add a ladle of vegetable stock to the pan and stir, allow it to fully absorb before adding any more and repeat the process, one ladle at a time, until the rice is fully cooked.
When the rice is close to cooked, add the broccoli and cook through.
Stir through the watercress, add the parmesan and enjoy!

Easter Bunny hops back to Osborne School thanks to Bluebird Care

Easter came early at Osborne School this week as Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey arranged for the Easter Bunny to make a surprise return for a second consecutive year.
The festive treat saw chocolate eggs hand-delivered to every student and staff member at the Winchester-based special school, in a gesture that underscores Bluebird Care's ongoing partnership with Osborne.
The pupils were filled with excitement and delight as the Easter Bunny hopped through the school to spread joy and chocolate treats.
A Life of Care: Margaret’s Remarkable Journey as a Live-in Carer
Margaret has spent years as a live-in carer, transforming the lives of those she cares for with her kindness, expertise, and unwavering dedication. Recently, she shared her journey with us, caring for those within the heart of the Test Valley, offering a glimpse into the meaningful moments that make her role so fulfilling.

Margaret recalls her time with Vicky, a client living with Alzheimer’s and arthritis, as one of her most meaningful experiences. Through tailored nutrition and personalised care, Vicky’s condition improved so dramatically that she was able to return to her first love—writing poetry. “It felt like caring for the most precious person in the world,” Margaret says.
Another treasured memory comes from her five years with Bill, whose family still considers Margaret a close friend, years after his passing.
Osborne School, which supports children with learning and physical disabilities, has been in partnership with Bluebird Care since 2023. Beyond the Easter excitement, the care provider has become a cornerstone of the school's daily life, providing pupils with expert personal care, moving & positioning, and nutrition & hydration.
This is a unique partnership that has transformed the school's care provision. With Bluebird Care's dedicated team managing all care needs, teaching staff have been freed up to devote more time on the children's education and grades.
Sonia White, Headteacher of Osborne School, said: "We’re thrilled that Bluebird Care remains so committed to our school. Beyond their daily support, this event is just one example of the special moments they create for our pupils - it's a highlight that brings beaming smiles to their faces, and our teaching staff too."
Norman Murphy, Managing Director of Bluebird Care Winchester, Eastleigh & Romsey, said: “It was a joy to see the children's smiles light up the school again, and it's a real pleasure to continue working so closely with Osborne to provide exceptional care and support to their pupils."
Tel: 01962 856 900 alresford@bluebirdcare.co.uk www.bluebirdcare.co.uk
“These relationships stay with you,” she shares, “they’re built on love and trust.”

Margaret finds joy in the small daily moments— sharing a meal, seeing a smile, or being warmly welcomed back after time away. “It’s those simple things that remind me why I do this,” she says.

Veteran Practice
This means that, as part of the health commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant, we have a dedicated Clinician, Dr. Hannah Harring, you can read Hannah’s statement here, who has specialist knowledge of military related health conditions and veteran specific health services. This is important in helping exforces to get the best care and treatment. If you are ex-forces, please let your GP know to help ensure you are getting the best possible care.
A veteran is someone who has served in the British Armed Forces (Regular or Reserve) for at least one day. Veterans also include any member of the Merchant Marine who has served in a war zone. This includes crew from convoys in World War 2 and more recently in the Falklands conflict and Gulf Wars.
About 18,000 service people move back into civilian life every year and whilst most of these individuals have similar levels of health to the general population, around 2,000 leave on medical grounds. The top reasons for medical discharge are for issues relating to back, knees, mental health, and hearing.
Being accredited means that a practice can better identify and treat veterans, refer them, where appropriate, to dedicated NHS services (such as the Veterans' Mental Health Transition, Intervention and Liaison service (TILS), the Veterans' Mental Health Complex Treatment Service (CTS) and the Veterans Trauma Network) and capture better epidemiological data to improve future health provision. It also means that the NHS is better able to meet the health commitments of the Armed Forces Covenant, whereby the Armed Forces community, including veterans, should face
no disadvantage in accessing health services and should receive priority care for military attributable conditions, subject to clinical need. If you are a veteran, please let us know!
Bank holiday closures 5th & 26th May
The surgery will be closed for the bank holiday weekend from 6.30pm Friday 2nd May until 8am on Tuesday 6th May then again from 6.30pm Friday 23rd May until 8am on Tuesday 27th May.
Covid spring booster programme
COVID-19 is more serious in older people and in people with certain underlying health conditions. For these reasons, people aged 75 years and over, those in care homes, and those with a weakened immune system are being offered a spring COVID-19 vaccine. Those eligible will be contacted by the surgery either by text message or telephone call. The vaccination will take place at the surgery unless the patient is residing in a care home or is housebound.
Alresford Surgery Patient Forum
On 25th January 2025 we held our annual Patient Forum meeting. The Patient Forum was set up in 2009 with aim of empowering patients to share their experiences and to work with us to help us improve and develop all areas of the service we provide.
At our meeting this year we gave a short presentation on the achievements of 2024, including the survey results and opened the floor to questions and comments. We discussed a range of topics including the provision of face-to-face appointments, the impact of the new housing development on the surgery and why the reception team ask for information about your problem when you call to book an appointment. We also talked about online access, using Patient Access or the NHS App and whether errors in medical records can be corrected.
We hold a Patient Forum meeting annually, but we are always grateful to receive feedback based on your own experiences at any time.
Did Not Attend - Missed Appointments
• People not turning up to their appointments - something called a “DNA” or “Did Not Attend”. In March, we recorded 53 missed appointments, across both the Doctor and Nursing teams. These appointments could have been utilised for others.
• We understand that life gets in the way sometimes, and things change. Any notice
you can provide, even last minute, will enable your appointment to be offered to somebody else.
Please remember to change or cancel your appointment if you are not able to attend. Please do not rely solely on text message appointment reminders from the practice as this is not a fail-safe system!
Reminder - Afternoon closure for staff training – Thursday 8th May
The surgery and dispensary will be closed from 12.30pm to enable all GPs & Nurses to attend a compulsory training meeting this afternoon. Our phone lines will not be open on this afternoon. If you require urgent medical attention, please call 111.
What service should I use?
Whether it's knowing when to visit your GP, heading to a pharmacy for expert advice, or dialling 111 for urgent medical help, making the right choice ensures you get the care you need and frees up emergency services for people who really need them.
Remember these simple steps:
1. Self-Care: Minor illnesses like coughs, colds, or headaches
2. Pharmacy First: sinusitis, sore throat, earache, infected insect bites, impetigo, shingles, UTIs and other non-urgent conditions
3. Book a GP Appointment: For non-urgent concerns or ongoing issues
4. Minor Injury Unit: Minor burns, sprains or other non-life threatening injuries
5. A&E: Life-threatening emergency Making the right choice means getting the right care, at the right time, in the right place. Let's all #ChooseWell and keep our NHS services available for those who need them most - go to https://www.nhs.uk/nhs-services/ #NHS #Healthcare #ChooseWellCampaign

Yes, You SHOULD Feel Good (About Your Vagina)
Those of us who have issues down there know the impact our vagina can have on our quality of life.
But we should ALL feel good about our vaginas.
Ultra Femme 360 is the painless radio frequency treatment that promotes the body’s own natural collagen production to restore and tighten the vaginal area.
From puberty, childbirth, menopause, and all the fun stuff in between, our vaginas go through a lot, and we rarely give them the care they need.
Our vaginal area is just as prone to damage and ageing as the rest of our body. Distressing problems with vaginal laxity, stress incontinence or reduced tissue quality are all experienced by most women at some point in their life.
The Ultra Femme 360 treatment provides total vaginal rejuvenation in one quick and painless treatment that lasts just eight minutes*.
What is Ultra Femme 360?
Ultra Femme 360 is a non-surgical solution for restoring the internal and external vaginal area. As the applicator is guided in and around the vagina, the radio frequency activates our own body’s natural collagen and elastin production, which tightens the vaginal canal and surrounding skin. The low levels of heat from the treatment also encourages blood flow to the area, further boosting the effects.
Feel good…

Who can benefit from Ultra Femme 360?
This is a safe and gentle treatment that is suitable for most women. If you have experienced vaginal changes since childbirth or menopause or have functional issues including stress incontinence or reduced sexual enjoyment, Ultra Femme 360 can tighten, restore, and rejuvenate your vagina for increased confidence and personal wellbeing.
Does the treatment hurt?
We understand that this kind of treatment can feel daunting. However, we aim to make you feel comfortable and relaxed throughout the treatment, which is entirely painless and lasts only 8 minutes. There is no downtime, and you can return to your normal daily activities immediately afterwards. *Recommended one treatment per week for three weeks for the best results.
We are one of the first clinics in the country to offer this treatment and look forward to welcoming you at The Face & Skin Clinic.
Book your treatment today. We should all feel good about our vaginas. www.lifeshouldbebeautiful.co.uk

“You OK?”

The Good, The Bad and The Ugli Truth
© Lucia Foster-Found 2025 www.luciafosterfound.com
Concerned tones floated through the bathroom door, and over the sounds of running water. She hadn’t realised she’d made a noise as the icy jets hit her sleepy, early morning skin.
“Fine thanks!” she gasped as she held her face under the frigid deluge. She was reading a new self-help book. It was about reaping the benefits of the body’s own feel-good chemicals. After a seemingly endless winter of long nights and short days, (there’d been a lot of coughing) she was helping her body to help her.
When she emerged from the shower, pinkskinned and slightly traumatised by flashbacks of her schooldays, she had to admit she was bursting with energy.
“Are you alright?” Himself called after her as she trotted outside, still wearing her dressing gown.
“I’m psyched for the day ahead!” she declared from the garden where she was enthusiastically uprooting weeds. “Cold showers, phone-fasting and daylight. I’m only on the Dopamine section, but I feel better already! You should read it too.”
Himself looked dubious as she sang, “I feeeel good, dodeedo, I knew that I would, dodeedo!” off-key, and jogged indoors to get dressed. By early evening, though, her good mood had evaporated. She marched into the house and threw her keys on the table.
“Good day darling?” Himself asked with slight trepidation in his voice.
Her day, it transpired, was a tale of potholes and bad drivers. So no. It could not be described as good, she explained vociferously as she paced the kitchen and vented.
“40. Everywhere. I was stuck behind this car that went 40 in a 60. But also 40 in a 30. And in a 20. And after they sped through the villages,
the swerving began. I caught up, but couldn’t overtake them. Although, can you blame them for avoiding the potholes – the roads are awful. I saw a man with a flat tyre taking a picture of a real shocker, must have been a foot deep.” Himself offered her a glass of wine.
“Oh, should I? I haven’t read that chapter in the book yet. And isn’t alcohol a depressant?”
“But red wine is good for you. Practically medicinal,” he encouraged, hoping for a tranquil evening and quietly putting his faith in the soothing raspberry hues and soporific influence of an Argentinian Malbec.
As they sat in the garden with glasses in hand, she sighed. “The book makes such a lot of sense. Phone fasting, for example. I’ve been scrolling too much. Those mini-videos of dogs are hilarious, but addictive – and time-wasting.”
Himself looked up from his phone and thrust it into his pocket. “Yes. Quite,” he agreed hastily. “But,” she stretched out her feet and leaned back in her chair (the Malbec was having the desired calming effect), “it’s hard to keep up with what’s good and what’s bad. Dairy is ‘good’. Dairy is ‘bad’. Real coffee is ‘good’. Too much caffeine is ‘bad’. So, if you buy de-caf, does that push the coffee into the processed, aka ‘bad’, bracket?” To be fair, the wine was taking the edge off her concern. “Mmn..” Himself was thinking of his own coffee habit and wondering how much was too much.. “And liver! Our daughter was appalled when I told her I ate liver when I was pregnant with her. It’s a no-no now – but back then..” She shrugged and had another sip.
“We can still eat it though, can’t we?” Himself was very partial to a liver and bacon casserole. “I mean, you don’t have to worry..?” “Um. No darling, that ship has sailed.” Done
two round-the world-cruises at least, she thought as she looked at his concerned face. Bless. Her menopause may have completely passed him by.
Good old HRT.
“Anyway, I’ll be paying more attention to the labels on foods from now on. More than five ingredients should make one pause for thought.” Which was probably everything in a snack packet, including Himself’s favourite, roast chicken crisps, she thought, sadly. And decided not to mention it.
“But that reminds me,” Himself topped up her glass, “the three fruit marmalade you made? I’ve bad news.”
“But there are only four things in it!” she exclaimed. “Oranges, lemons, ugli fruit and sugar. It’s not ultra-processed. It’s delicious. And it took me ages..” She surveyed him frowningly over the top of her wine glass. Himself had expressed a wish for some thick cut homemade marmalade –like his mother used to make.
“It does only have four ingredients. It’s not ultraprocessed. It is delicious. And… it’s better than the marmalade my mother used to make – sorry Mum.” He looked sheepishly skywards.
“So, what’s the problem?” She was confused. If it was all those things, not to mention a fraction of the price of shop-bought, what was the problem?
“Transpires that ugli fruit is a grapefruit and my medication and grapefruit aren’t compatible, I’m afraid. So, it might be good, but it’s bad for me.” Himself started to laugh, “And that’s the ‘ugli’ truth – gettit? The ugli truth…” he howled, wiping his eyes.
She watched his hilarity, only mildly (thanks to the Malbec) peeved that she’d have to give away her labour-intensive marmalade. And anyway, laughter was good for you, she thought. The book said so.

Alresford Chamber of Commerce AGM 3rd April – 2025 Chairman’s Report
In the past year the Chamber’s activities included:
• Chambers Chats
• Fish & Chips suppers
• Easter Egg Hunt
• Ghost Hunt
• Lighting up Alresford in partnership with the Alresford PIGS
In March 2025 the Chamber wrote to MP Danny Chambers to raise concern over the ending of Business Rate relief. The Chamber expressed views on the future lease arrangements of the Station Car Park and the importance of public parking to commerce in the town.
Membership remains stable, having lost and gained roughly the same number of members during the year. We are introducing a 15-minute member participation slot prior to meeting to our monthly committee meetings, to allow members to raise issues, make suggestions or express opinions. The town’s footfall remains a matter of concern, and we are exploring ways to encourage more visitors.
Members are reminded of our Hampshire Chamber affiliation. Alresford Chamber members enjoy some of the benefits of Hampshire Chamber
membership, these being:
• Members can attend Hampshire Chamber events and training courses at preferential rates. (Free training courses are excluded)
• Members will receive Hampshire Chamber’s Business News magazine four times a year and regular business emails updates.
• Members receive a basic listing in the Hampshire Chamber’s online directory.
• Hampshire Chamber will assist any member with representational issues both locally and nationally via its links with the British Chambers of Commerce.

Pawfect Day for a Walk in the Sunshine

Dozens of two legged and four pawed friends enjoyed an exhilarating walk around Itchen Abbas on the hottest day of the year. The Home-Start Winchester annual dog walk is a firm fixture in the charity’s fundraising calendar but on some occasions, it has been the scene of torrential rain and muddy wellies.
“The weather was glorious and the walk near the Avington Estate and by the river was delightful and the magnolia and cherry blossom just wonderful,” said Home-Start Winchester’s events organiser and Trustee, Chrissie Barlow. “Last year we all got drenched and needed warming up with soup, this year was like a summer’s day and we all needed cooling down, especially the dogs.”
“Special thanks must go to walk sponsors Gay Dog Boarding Kennels for their continued support and to all the volunteers who mapped the walks, made home-made soup and ploughman’s lunches,” said Chrissie. “An added bonus was that we raised £1,000 for our work with young families in and around the city.”
VIP guests taking part in the day included Sue Elton, the new High Sherriff of Hampshire with Springer Spaniel, Lola and Winchester MP Danny Chambers with his partner Emma and their black labrador Moose. The Mayor and Mayoress of Winchester saw the crowd off, but feared their 16 year-old dog Hillie would find it all a bit too much.

Community Litter Pick
Thank you to all the enthusiastic people who turned on the morning of Saturday March 29th to take part in the Annual Community Litter Pick, part of the Keep Britain Tidy ‘Great British Spring Clean’. It was lovely to see so many of the community getting involved, including the Cubs, Brownies, and Many bags of litter were collected, and certificates given out. As always, a variety of unusual items were found. It was a fun morning for all.

As many of the Thursday Kipling Cub Scouts were unable to take part in the community litter pick on Saturday 29th March, they chose to make a difference on their own. On their regular meeting night, they headed to St John's Churchyard and, within just half an hour, managed to collect enough litter to fill four carrier bags.
This initiative was part of their work towards the Environmental Conservation badge, during which they’ve been learning about the importance of recycling, reusing, and renewing materials rather than simply throwing them away. They also discovered the serious impact litter has on the environment – from animals getting injured or trapped, to people being harmed, and the staggering fact that some plastics take millions of years to break down. Even cigarette butts can linger in the environment for up to 500 years.
A fantastic effort by the Cubs – Well Done!
Hanging Baskets and Pole Planters –Brightening Up the Town!
We’re absolutely delighted that so many residents and local businesses based in the town centre have chosen to participate in this year’s hanging basket scheme. Your enthusiasm and community spirit will help bring vibrant colour and life to our shared spaces over the summer months.
We’re also excited to share that we shall be installing “up-the-pole planters" along West Street, East Street, Station Road, and Pound Hill. These eye-catching displays will add a splash of greenery and floral charm throughout
the town, making it even more welcoming for residents and visitors alike. We’re aiming to have all the baskets and planters installed at the beginning of June, just in time to enjoy them throughout the summer months. As we are providing a full watering service this year, you may spot our contracted company, Windowflowers, active keeping the displays well-watered and looking their best. Thank you to everyone involved for helping to make our town bloom!

Barn Meadow Update & Local Green Space
In the October edition, we made a plea for everyone who cares about Alresford’s water meadow and the landscape and wildlife habitat it provides, to respond to the neighbourhood plan Community Consultation. We have been amazed by your response. Thank you so very much to everyone who took the time to contribute their supportive comments; they will be vital if this site is to be protected.
At the end of March, the town council quietly released the responses to the online survey. By the time you read this, we hope that it will also have released the responses from the event at The Swan. That may tell a different story, but the online survey results speak for themselves:

You can see all the responses at: www.SaveBarnMeadow.co.uk
The town council also released its own AI generated summary of those responses. Significantly, it concludes that:
“The community strongly supports preserving the site as a Local Green Space and protecting its ecological and historical significance” and that “Community consultations have consistently demonstrated strong support for designating this land as a Local Green Space, and proceeding with development here would
undermine public trust and disregard the community’s wishes.”
Those conclusions are backed up by more than seventy expressions of support for Local Green Space (LGS) designation for Barn Meadow from the online survey, despite the meadow being expressly excluded from consideration for LGS under the draft policy revealed at the consultation.
Since the Winter 2024 Community Consultation closed, we have been concerned that the committee has chosen to review the public’s responses behind closed doors, despite its Terms of Reference requiring it to “undertake the process in a democratic, transparent, and fair fashion.”
Why does Local Green Space matter for Barn Meadow?
First of all, because the Alresford public has repeatedly asked for LGS designation to be included in its neighbourhood plan.
At the Summer 2023 Community Consultation, the people of Alresford overwhelmingly supported the proposal for Barn Meadow to be protected into the future through designation as Local Green Space. In the 21 months that have since passed, this outcome has never even been discussed by the committee and, despite us repeatedly asking the council, no explanation has been offered for this.
A Local Green Space designation would give Barn Meadow the same level of protection as Green Belt land, meaning future development
could only be approved in “exceptional circumstances”.
Since the first time we proposed LGS to the committee, it has resisted the idea – one member forcefully telling us that nobody else cared about the meadow. The committee has since given a series of explanations why Barn Meadow does not qualify for LGS; each of which has been shown to be unfounded based on national planning policy and guidance. Yet at time of writing, the committee has refused to explain why the decision was taken to remove Barn Meadow from the draft Local Green Space policy.
Securing Local Green Space designation is just as important for Barn Meadow’s future as preventing housing development. Without it, the landowner will no doubt try to develop the meadow in the future, so will have little incentive to make improvements to its habitat. If the neighbourhood plan does not protect Barn Meadow as Local Green Space, we will expect a full explanation of why the evidence base from the three Community Consultations has not been followed.
Thank you for your fantastic support so far. The indications are that we may need it again.

I’m worried about my debt and rising bills, and I want to know what support is available.
Do you have any advice on managing rising costs and what to do if you fall into debt? With energy, water and broadband bills on the rise, it’s getting increasingly difficult for many people to cover their expenses. It’s important to know you’re not alone and that financial support might be available to help ease the burden.

of bills, budgeting tools like the one on the MoneyHelper website (www.moneyhelper. org.uk) can be very useful in helping you understand what money you have coming in and going out each month. If you're behind on bills, you should prioritise paying rent, mortgage payments, Council Tax and energy bills, as these are known as 'priority' debts which have the most serious consequences if missed.
Once you’ve got priority debts under control, you should look at credit card or store card debts, missed Buy Now Pay Later payments or payday loans. Whatever debt you’re dealing with, it’s important to speak to the person or company you owe money to as early as you can.
If you feel you need support with debts or rising costs, your local Citizens Advice can help or contact another organisation like StepChange.
