A GLOBAL PLAYER IN MARITIME, LAND, AIR AND LOGISTICS SOLUTIONS

Sustainable Supply Chain Packaging: How to reduce materials, waste and transport costs

E

very product moving through a supply chain has two fundamental requirements. It needs to arrive in the right condition. And everybody handling it needs to know what it is, where it belongs and potentially where it has been. That makes labelling and packaging much more than an end-of-line process.

Primary packaging: Packaging immediately surrounding the product. Secondary packaging: Packaging grouping individual products, such as cartons or cases. Tertiary packaging: Packaging used primarily for logistics, including pallets, stretch wrap and strapping.

Packaging protects products as they move between manufacturing, warehousing, transport and customers. Labelling provides the information that allows those products, cartons and pallets to be identified, scanned, routed and traced.

The right solution depends heavily on what is being moved.

Get either wrong and the consequences can spread quickly. Poor packaging can mean damaged products, unstable pallets, wasted materials and costly returns. Incorrect or unreadable labels can cause picking errors, rejected shipments, traceability problems and delays. The procurement question should therefore not simply be: “How much does our packaging cost?” It should be: “How effectively does our packaging and labelling support the movement of goods through the entire supply chain?” What Is Supply Chain Packaging? Supply chain packaging includes the materials and processes used to protect, contain, consolidate and transport products. It can operate at several levels.

8

Fragile electronics, chilled food, automotive components and bulk industrial goods have very different requirements. The important point is that packaging should be designed around the whole journey, rather than simply the moment at which an item leaves the warehouse. Start with the Product and Its Journey Before comparing packaging materials, buyers should understand the conditions the product will experience. Questions include: How fragile is it? How heavy is it? How valuable is it? Is it temperature sensitive? How many times will it be handled? Will it travel individually or on a pallet? How far will it travel? Which transport modes will be used? Will it encounter moisture or temperature variation? What does the customer expect on arrival? A package that survives controlled pallet transport between distribution centres may perform very differently

when handled repeatedly through a parcel network. This leads to a useful procurement principle: Design packaging for the journey, not simply the product. Reduce Product Damage Without Over-Packaging The obvious purpose of protective packaging is to prevent damage. But simply adding more material is rarely the optimum solution. Excessive packaging can increase: Material costs, Parcel dimensions, Transport costs, Storage requirements, Waste, Environmental impact. Too little packaging creates a different cost through: Damaged goods, Returns, Replacements, Customer complaints, Additional transport. The objective is therefore right-sized protection. Buyers may need to assess the combination of: outer packaging + cushioning + void fill + sealing + palletisation. Rather than evaluating each material independently. Seminars MONDAY 12TH OCTOBER 08.45 – 09.30

“Delivery Is a Boardroom Issue: The Hidden Cost of Getting It Wrong” Delivery is no longer simply an operational concern. It has a direct impact on customer acquisition and retention, margin, brand reputation and the ability to compete. Drawing from the latest research and industry insights, Richard Lim, CEO of Retail Economics, will reveal how delivery and returns performance directly impacts customer acquisition, loyalty, profitability and competitiveness. Based on analysis of more than 100 online ordering and returns experiences and a survey of over 2,000 UK households, the research identifies what defines delivery excellence, where retailers are exceeding or falling short of customer expectations, and the strategies businesses must prioritise to remain competitive amid rising consumer demands, increasing costs and ongoing supply chain pressures. •

Richard Lim CEO of Retail & Economics GFS

• • • •

Reveal the true cost of delivery challenges, including the impact on conversion, customer loyalty, operational costs and margin. Examine how delivery performance influences competitiveness and customer outcomes, and where retailers risk falling behind. Explore why delivery needs to be treated as a strategic commercial priority, not simply an operational function. Identify what businesses need to do to protect performance, control costs and remain competitive amid increasing delivery and supply chain pressures. Translate the findings into clear, actionable takeaways for eCommerce and supply chain leaders.

Richard Lim is Chief Executive Officer of Retail Economics, an independent economics research consultancy focused on the consumer and retail industry. He also sits on the Strategic Advisory Board at the University of East Anglia’s School of Economics, ranked in the top 10 departments in Economics in the UK. Previously, Richard held the position of Chief Economist at the British Retail Consortium before heading up the Retail Insight and Analytics team. Richard was voted as a Top Ten Voice for Linked for sharing his insights on the retail industry, has been recognised as a top retail influencer by RETHINK RETAIL in 2023 and also appeared in the final of The Apprentice as one of Lord Sugar’s advisors.

09.40 – 10.25

“Designed for Change: Turning Operational Complexity into Value” Supply chains are becoming more complex, but the systems and processes supporting them do not always evolve at the same pace. This session explores how organisations can design operations that are easier to adapt, connect and improve, reducing the friction between change and value. Drawing on lessons from ERP and business transformation, we will look at why some organisations realise value quickly while others become constrained by the very systems designed to support them. • •

Jamie Watts Managing Director Mysoft

10

• • •

Complexity is not the problem; unmanaged complexity is Why growth, acquisition, new markets and regulation gradually create operational friction How disconnected processes and data slow down decision-making Why technology transformation often fails to deliver value as quickly as expected The relationship between flexibility and standardisation

Jamie Watts is Managing Director of Mysoft, with over 15 years’ experience across enterprise software, ERP, finance and digital transformation. He leads Mysoft’s growth strategy while maintaining the people-first culture at the heart of the business. Jamie is passionate about helping ambitious organisations use technology to improve performance, drive efficiency and achieve sustainable growth. His experience spans Sage X3, Sage Intacct and Mysoft’s own technology, including X3CloudDocs, with a strong focus on innovation, customer success and delivering meaningful business transformation across manufacturing, distribution and technology-led sectors.

How to improve supply chain visibility with proof of delivery software

S

upply chains are under constant pressure to deliver greater transparency, faster fulfilment and higher levels of customer service. Whether managing inbound materials, warehouse operations or finalmile deliveries, organisations need accurate, real-time information to make informed operational decisions. Improving supply chain visibility has therefore become a strategic priority for logistics, operations and supply chain leaders. Modern proof of delivery (PoD) software plays an increasingly important role by providing live delivery updates, capturing digital evidence of completed deliveries and helping organisations respond quickly when exceptions occur. This practical guide explores how proof of delivery technology supports end-to-end visibility and highlights the key features buyers should compare before investing. What is Supply Chain Visibility? Supply chain visibility refers to an organisation’s ability to monitor products, inventory and deliveries as they move throughout the supply chain. Rather than relying on manual updates or disconnected systems, modern visibility platforms consolidate information from warehouses, transport providers, drivers and customers into a single operational view. By providing accurate, real-time information, organisations can identify delays, improve planning, reduce disruption and deliver better customer experiences.

14

Real Time Logistics Tracking Real time logistics tracking enables organisations to monitor the location and status of deliveries throughout the transportation process. Using GPS technology, mobile applications and connected fleet systems, logistics teams can receive live updates on vehicle locations, estimated arrival times and delivery progress. This visibility allows businesses to respond proactively to delays, optimise delivery routes and provide customers with accurate delivery information. For organisations managing highvalue or time-sensitive shipments, real-time tracking can also strengthen operational resilience by enabling faster intervention when disruptions occur. Logistics Visibility Strong logistics visibility extends beyond vehicle tracking to provide a complete view of goods moving through the supply chain. Leading platforms combine warehouse data, transport information, inventory updates and supplier communications to create a single source of operational insight. This enables organisations to identify bottlenecks, improve planning accuracy and coordinate more effectively across procurement, warehousing, transport and customer service functions. When comparing solutions, buyers should evaluate reporting capabilities, system integrations and the ability to provide visibility across multiple carriers and distribution networks. Visible Evidence of Delivery Capturing visible evidence of

delivery provides organisations with greater confidence that goods have reached the correct destination in the expected condition. Modern proof of delivery systems can capture electronic signatures, photographs, timestamps, GPS locations and delivery notes using mobile devices. This information helps reduce disputes, improve customer communication and create a reliable audit trail that supports operational reporting and compliance requirements. Digital evidence also enables customer service teams to resolve delivery queries more quickly while reducing manual administration. Benefits of Proof of Delivery Software Implementing proof of delivery technology can help organisations: • Improve supply chain visibility • Reduce delivery disputes • Increase operational transparency • Improve customer communication • Speed up issue resolution • Enhance delivery performance reporting • Reduce manual paperwork • Strengthen compliance and audit trails • Improve customer satisfaction As customer expectations continue to increase, greater delivery visibility can also become an important competitive differentiator. Customs iX 07508 704 353 / scot@customsix.co.uk / customsix.co.uk Customs iX is a customs compliance platform built by people from the logistics industry. Rather than a static rules engine, Customs iX uses AI to assist directly in entry build-up, working from shipment documents to construct declarations, and stays connected to live customs and regulatory updates as they change. The declaration generation module then builds CDS entries for review and submission, while the auditing tool continuously monitors post-entry compliance across every clearance rather than a periodic sample. Classify handles HS code classification directly from shipment data, and FTA Checker identifies where shipments qualify for preferential duty rates across UK, EU, and AU trade agreements. Customs iX integrates with existing systems including ASM and CargoWise, so it fits into workflows already in place rather than requiring teams to change how they work. The platform is used by teams managing high volumes of complex, multi-market trade, and holds ISO/IEC 27001 certification.
