Global battery storage capacity set for rapid growth as energy systems evolve
B
attery energy storage systems (BESS) are expected to become an increasingly important part of the global energy mix over the next five years, with installed capacity forecast to increase sixfold by 2030, according to new research from GlobalData. The market intelligence firm’s latest report predicts global battery storage capacity will grow at a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 42% between 2025 and 2030, driven by accelerating electrification, expanding renewable energy generation, growing demand from AI-enabled data centres and continued reductions in lithium-ion battery costs. For energy managers, the report highlights the growing role of battery storage in improving energy resilience, reducing electricity costs and enabling greater use of renewable energy across commercial and industrial operations. China and the United States are expected to remain the dominant markets, accounting for almost three-quarters of global installed battery storage capacity at the end of 2025. However, GlobalData notes that momentum is also building in markets including the UK, Australia and the Middle East, where battery projects are increasingly supporting renewable generation and strengthening grid flexibility.

A key trend identified by the report is the industry’s shift towards four-hour battery systems rather than shorter-duration installations. Longer-duration storage allows organisations and utilities to capture excess renewable electricity generated during periods of high solar or wind output before releasing it during evening demand peaks, improving both network stability and asset utilisation. The research also points to growing investment in co-located renewable energy and storage projects. Combining solar generation with battery storage on the same site enables organisations to maximise self-generated electricity, reduce curtailment and make more efficient use of constrained grid connections while improving project economics. For organisations managing large energy loads, battery storage is also becoming an important tool for managing peak demand and improving operational resilience. The report suggests batteries will play an increasingly significant role in supporting data centres by providing rapid-response backup power, smoothing fluctuations in electricity demand and helping facilities operate within grid connection limits while expanding capacity. GlobalData argues that the value proposition for battery storage is shifting beyond traditional grid
support services towards energy shifting, enabling organisations to store electricity when prices are low or renewable generation is abundant before using it during periods of higher demand and higher tariffs. As battery costs continue to fall and revenue opportunities expand through flexibility markets, demand response and renewable integration, the report suggests energy storage is becoming a strategic investment for organisations seeking to strengthen energy resilience, improve sustainability performance and reduce long-term energy costs.

NHS energy managers urged to plan early to maximise decarbonisation funding
N
HS energy managers are being encouraged to integrate planning and project development at an early stage to maximise the benefits of more than £816 million available through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme (PSDS). According to planning and development consultancy Lichfields, early planning is essential if NHS trusts are to successfully deliver complex low-carbon energy projects while maintaining critical healthcare services across operational hospital estates. Phase 4 of the PSDS, covering the 2025/26 to 2027/28 financial years, has allocated more than £816 million nationally, with around half of the funding awarded to NHS organisations. The investment supports projects including heat pumps, solar PV installations, lower-carbon heating systems and associated energy infrastructure as the NHS works towards its target of becoming the world’s first net zero health service for the emissions it directly controls by 2040. For energy managers overseeing ageing and energy-intensive estates, the funding represents a significant opportunity to reduce carbon emissions and operating costs. However, Lichfields warns that many schemes will require careful planning where works involve installing new

energy infrastructure on busy hospital sites. Jonathan Standen, Planning Director at Lichfields, said trusts should develop planning strategies alongside technical designs and funding applications rather than treating planning as a later-stage requirement. “Funding through the Public Sector Decarbonisation Scheme is giving NHS trusts the chance to make real progress on lower-carbon estates,” he said. “The next step is ensuring projects can be delivered efficiently across sites that are operational every day.” One example is Northumbria Healthcare NHS Foundation Trust, which has secured around £20 million through Phase 4 to decarbonise heating systems across Wansbeck, Cramlington and Hexham hospitals. The programme will replace conventional heating with a combination of ground-source, air-source and water-source heat pumps. At Wansbeck General Hospital, proposals include an innovative ground-source heat pump system that would utilise warm water from historic coal mine workings beneath the site, demonstrating how existing local resources can support future low-carbon energy systems.
Lichfields also highlights the success of a previous £22 million decarbonisation programme at North Tyneside Hospital, where large-scale heat pumps, boiler upgrades and a 975kW solar PV installation are estimated to reduce carbon emissions by 75%, saving approximately 3,470 tonnes of CO₂ and around £500,000 in annual energy costs. As NHS organisations continue to invest in renewable energy, electrified heating and estate decarbonisation, the consultancy says close collaboration between energy managers, estates teams, planners, contractors and local authorities will be essential to ensure projects are delivered on time, within budget and with minimal disruption to patient services.
