his time of year, we like to have a little fun with all of the bad decisions made by our local leaders and some not-so-local ones. Go ahead.

Paint us as the “liberal media” or “fake news.”

Whatever you say pales against stone-cold reality, a.k.a. the truth, which is firmly on our side. Our hope is that when we all gather around our respective dinner tables to celebrate the birth of our land this Thanksgiving, we will be a lot more patient with the people we disagree with than we may normally be. Now we can see the progressives frothing at the mouth: “You can’t tolerate hate!” To which we would respond, “Unless your rightwing uncle is wearing a white hood and a sheet, you can’t really accuse him of anything other than voting for what he believes in, and that’s what our nation is about.” And that’s the bottom line. –– Anthony Mariani

Gobbling Up Cash Who can deliver on inflated promises to use federal pork to fund an insanely expensive –– $1.2 billion and counting –– economic development plan disguised as a flood control project? Not the Candy Man, and, apparently, not U.S. Rep. Kay Granger, either. Her promises to nab a Brinks truck’s worth of federal taxpayer dollars and siphon them down Texas-way go back decades. She’s come up short by several hundreds of millions of dollars.

Now with Panther Island, Fort Worth is the proud owner of unfinished bridges over dry land. Eminent domain has

been used to wrest people’s property away from them for what amounts to a private economic development plan with a little bit of public flooding thrown in as bait.

Nearby businesses are suffering from closed or detoured streets. Driving into downtown from the northwest feels like traversing a motocross track in Fallujah. Give Granger credit, however, for creating at least one local financial windfall. Her son, J.D. Granger, collected sixfigure salaries for a dozen years as executive director of the project even as it soared over budget and many years behind schedule. Who can take a politician’s promise and sprinkle it with irony? The Weekly can. Blatant nepotism might be one reason federal dollars have been slow to come.

Hot Potato Almost three years have passed since a white Fort Worth police officer exacerbated a tense situation and wrestled down a black mom, Jacqueline Craig, who had called police after a man was allegedly rough with her son. The officer arrested Craig and her two teenage daughters, prompting a public outcry and social media firestorm. City officials responded by holding meetings and addressing race relations. In 2017, they created the Task Force on Race and Culture, where two-dozen handpicked and carefully selected members spent a year and a half developing recommendations to make the city more welcoming to people of color. The group’s primary conclusion:

The police department needed an independent citizen review board. Almost another year has passed, and city leaders have budgeted money to hire an independent police monitor, who will then supposedly investigate the feasibility of possibly creating a citizen review board at some potential time in the near-to-distant future. There.

Everyone feel better now?

Basting with a Broad Brush Sheriff Bill Waybourn made national news this year for visiting the gaffe capital of the universe, the White House. Our county sheriff was there to support the acting director of the U.S. Immigrations and Customs Enforcement Agency (ICE), Matthew Albence. Albence’s tighty whities were twisted after U.S. District Judge Andre Birotte Jr. ruled ICE couldn’t issue detainment orders based solely on database searches from law enforcement. Birotte presented findings that, during a specified period, more than 16 percent of those detainers were eventually withdrawn and deemed the database system alone an unreliable method of policing. Enter: Waybourn, who graced the White House podium in allblacks and donning a matching cowboy hat, to make his human appeal to the voters. Waybourn proceeded to shove his oversized square-toed cowboy boot straight down his own throat. He asserted that if these detainees were released –– which wasn’t what the judge was calling for –– they would repeat their drinking and driving ways

What kind of a world is this when teenagers think they can play in a publicly owned park while being Hispanic? Even worse, when a heroic woman like Samantha Silvers Eley poses as a police officer to threateningly kick them out in a profanity-laden tirade, those little scamps videoed the exchange and made her out to be the law-breaking thug. How dare they use Eley’s words and actions to portray her as the villain! This

woman is not only a champion of our freedom to be dumb, racist bullies, but she also nailed the tone police use to interact with people of color. She’s a Method actress of the highest pedigree. We’re just thankful that a woman with an arrest record stemming from assault charges is using her vast experience dealing with police to impersonate one while keeping us safe from children at play. We hope she gains an even deeper understanding of our legal system after her day in court.

White Meat Only The students at Carter-Riverside High School received a great lesson in prejudice from Georgia Clark, the ESL teacher who used her Twitter account to complain about the “illegals” in her class and urge the government to get rid of them. Last June, the school board terminated the contract of the self-described “earth angel” and conducted a hearing last month that stood firm on the issue. There the matter stands for now while Clark appeals the ruling, so as she enjoys the fifth month of her vacation, we give her a slice of turkey breast because she probably prefers white meat.

It has long been a knock on the student body that they are a bunch of entitled, boyfriend tee-withshort shorts and khakis-and-purple-polowearing insider trading felonies waiting to happen. But at least they used to be able to

How does a man who played on the greatest team in the history of football refuse to ever go for it on fourth and half an inch? Until he’s replaced, the Cowboy faithful will have to be content with distant memories of glory.

And don’t get us started on the four-way stop signs at the junction of Stadium Drive and Bellaire Drive North. We frequently use the parking lot opposite the west entrance to the rec center. Fair enough, pedestrians on a crosswalk have the right of way. However, that does not permit students to form a constant snake of slowness as they slip out across one walkway to slide somewhat diagonally to the next all the while holding up traffic in four directions. Drivers have taken to forcing the issue and asserting their own rights of way. This shit might could end in tears.

and run over you and your children. The sheriff ’s comments have been exploited and de-contextualized repeatedly to make him look worse, but he implodes well enough on his own. Even in context, Waybourn’s comments don’t fit Albence’s motive for calling a presser to whine about a liberal California judge blocking him from violating due process. Sheriff Bill needs to police his own lane and resist becoming a patsy for ICE, especially considering 26.7 percent of the county that elected him is Hispanic or Latino. Have the selfawareness that if you speak to the national media looking like an extra from Walker, Texas Ranger, you should tread carefully enough that no news outlet can easily make it seem like you’re calling anyone with brown skin a malicious drunk driver.

A Leg Up on the Big 12 TCU fans have been roasting in the oven all year, so this award branches out to include our friends throughout the conference. Fort Worthians were filled with optimism, but a roster full of purple freshmen has yielded always exciting but mostly disappointing results. Our fellow conference teams as a whole are the real losers this season. Entering Week 11, there

Swimming in Gravy

Setting aside the irony of Rep. Tony Tinderholt’s “pro-life” bill that would have made it possible to put women to death for having abortions, his reasoning behind the measure was an even bigger contradiction. The Arlington Republican told The Texas Observer that the proposed legislation would “force” women to be “more personally responsible” with their bodies. How’s that for logic? His bill made no exception for rape or incest, and anyone involved in an abortion would have been open to homicide charges, which can carry the death penalty in Texas. It goes without saying that a law proposed by a man conveniently left out the part a man plays in pregnancy. Tinderholt’s failed legislation is just the latest and most reckless ploy by increasingly radical far-right lawmakers who are rushing to be first in line with a Supreme Court challenge to Roe v. Wade.

The fact that this bill was even considered in a committee hearing tells you just how far the right will stoop to pander to their base –– while sacrificing women.

We shouldn’t envy turkeys around this season. President Trump pardons only one whose neck is spared without the necessity of actually working in his administration. This group of gobblers

Republican state lawmakers apparently blew a right-wing gasket this year over the idea that a bloc of traditionally liberal voters –– college students –– are gaining traction. According to critics, a new law that clamps down on temporary earlyvoting sites is a thinly veiled attempt to keep the young ones from casting ballots.

The law will make it virtually impossible for many colleges, retirement homes, hospitals, government offices, and other locations to offer so-called mobile polling sites. That’s because they must now remain open for the entire early-voting period instead of just a couple of days or so. The end result is that it’s simply not cost-effective and logistically possible to stay open like that, so why was the change rolled out? Republicans have argued that school districts, for example, can abuse temporary early-voting sites by setting them up on campuses during bond elections. Supporters also say the new law can help cut down on voter fraud (which barely exists).

Other things are at stake, however.

In 2018, the pop-up voting sites were a major hit at many college campuses across the state. In all, Texas saw a 500 percent increase in youth voter turnout when compared to 2014. Fears that the law will hinder access to voting –– especially during the 2020 presidential election –– have led to a sad but not surprising outcome.

The Texas Democratic Party, along with the Democratic Senatorial Campaign Committee and Democratic Congressional Campaign Committee, have launched a civil lawsuit that maintains House Bill 1888 is unconstitutional. Specifically, the lawsuit states, the bill violates the First, Fourteenth, and Twenty-Sixth Amendments to the U.S. Constitution.

aren’t any undefeated squads, and there is little to any hope of “one true champion” appearing in this year’s college football playoff. The most recent marquee matchup of the Sooners visiting the Bears clearly displayed two inconsistent teams capable of playing two quarters of good football only. When ESPN’s College Gameday comes to town, you’d better play. Baylor defied the haters for 30 minutes as the Sooner Schooner flipped over once more, only to be righted in the second half, when the Bears forgot how to play offense. Let’s be clear: Waco’s finest had no shot of getting into the playoffs even with an undefeated season thanks to their laughable nonconference schedule. The Sooners fumbled away their chances against Kansas State and nearly fell to a late-charging Cyclone squad. Baylor has a loss and two overtime squeakers against TCU and Tech vilifying an already dubious resume. The roundrobin conference that shouldn’t have a championship game is now in horror

Selfish seizing of taxpayer money surprisingly brought an onslaught of condemnation from a landscape dotted with literal lakefront mansions and non-farm homesteads.

Rockwall is the smallest county in the state and shouldn’t be grabbing extra gravy to rival adjacent counties that manage larger and more complex collections of North Texas residents with real challenges. Local outcry and a petition at Change.org that collected more than 1,000 supporters inspired part of this flock to warble back from their position. Judge Sweet recanted while opting for a more reasonable 5-percent raise, and commissioner Cliff Sevier –– who voted against the measure from the outset –– flexed his fiscal conservatism by opting for a measly 3-percent raise. The other three members kept their generously selfserved portion. Texas law allows elected

After years of Republican-led mismanagement of our state’s budget, specifically school funding, the tax burden has shifted to the counties.

The good news, many thought, is that you can protest your property tax increase.

That news was only good for those who received their notices on time or at all.

According to a Star-Telegram column, a number of homeowners all over the county complained they never even had the chance to protest. And for those who did but didn’t win their appeal, TAD extended an icy-cold middle finger when homeowners dared question the logic of taxing some people out of their homes, so if you were planning to come home this Thanksgiving, you’d better make sure you still have one.

On October 12, Atatiana Jefferson was killed by Aaron Dean, a now-former Fort Worth police officer who answered a wellness-check call and then shot her through her bedroom window.

report that it was strange that Jefferson’s doors were open (screen doors shut) and lights were on at such a late hour. He wanted the police to check on her.

Dean and another officer arrived and for some inexplicable reason did not announce themselves at the open door but went to the backyard. Dean had a flashlight in one hand and his pistol in the other.

Jefferson responded to the noise in her backyard, according to her 8-year-old nephew, with whom she was playing video

games. She appeared in shadow at her rear window as Dean, without identifying himself, shouted, “Put your hands up! Show me your hands!” and fired the lethal round.

Dean retired from the force almost immediately and was charged with murder.

The tragedy was compounded when Jefferson’s father, Marquis Jefferson, who was extremely distraught and angry over his only daughter’s killing, died of a massive heart attack less than one month later, on November 9. He was 58.

Until recently, Hood County Sheriff Roger Deeds hasn’t made many waves in his 10 or so years on the job. This year, however, the Republican lawman came unhinged.

In September, he called for Hood County to become a sanctuary county for guns, and he said he would not enforce any federal gun law. He vowed to protect not children or any other life but gun owners from, well, no one except failed Democratic presidential nominee Beto O’Rourke, who

was threatening to take away gun nuts’ precious deadly toys. This was clearly political theater –– dangling overcooked red meat for the base to devour on the verge of an election. A month later, Sheriff Trigger-Finger publicly endorsed Nathan Criswell, a candidate for commissioner who was under a family violence protective order. When Hood County News reached out to the sheriff for comment, he first pulled his endorsement and then later recanted, claiming that the newspaper had threatened to write “a political hit piece” if he backed Criswell. Deeds and Criswell issued a joint press release that accused the newspaper of editorial abuse, among other allegations. In a bizarre twist, the release also pegged the Hood County News as Criswell’s “opponent” in the upcoming election. Newspapers not only aren’t dying. They’re apparently running for local government.

fevered fantasies of hordes of black and brown people swarming the ballot boxes from overseas (when actually, said ballot boxes are being swarmed by his buddies from Russia and the Ukraine). You wouldn’t expect Texas to be any different, which is why David Whitley roared into his appointment as Acting Secretary of State waving a list of perfectly legal voters whom he claimed to be them damn furriners. This was so egregious that even the State Senate wasn’t buying his claim, which prompted his resignation last May and almost half a million taxpayer dollars being paid to voters who were tarred in this fashion. We don’t begrudge those voters the cash settlement.

We’re even feeling generous enough to give Whitley and his colleagues turkey that has been vomited up by Thanksgiving gluttons.

There’s your purge for you.

Marie Yovanovitch, who recently testified at the impeachment hearings. Yovanovitch was a straight shooter with 33 years in the State Department, someone who would not go along with Parnas and Fruman’s dirty deal to oust the head of Naftogaz, Ukraine’s national gas and oil company.

So she had to go.

Well, Parnas and Fruman had met on a number of occasions with Sessions subsequent to the Mar-a-Lago event, and during a May 9, 2018, meeting, they told Sessions that Yovanovitch had been talking trash about Trump in the Ukraine.

Two days later, for who the hell knows why, Sessions wrote a letter to U.S. Secretary of State Mike Pompeo saying that he had “concrete evidence from close companions that Ambassador Yovanovitch has spoken privately and repeatedly about her disdain for the current administration.”

Sessions has since claimed that those “close companions” are other members of Congress, but forgive us for being a little skeptical.

Pete Sessions’ name has already come up in impeachment testimony, and he’s already spoken to a grand jury about Parnas and Fruman. Unfortunately, his letter was part of the justification for recalling Ambassador Yovanovitch from her post.

Other than that, it’s going well: Sessions was voted out of Congress, Parnas and Fruman have been indicted, and Giuliani is in a tight spot. Way to go, Pete.

In March, the Duncanville police department raided two stores, in Duncanville and Lancaster, looking for ... sex traffickers? Cocaine dealers? A meth lab? Nope. Not even close. The target: CBD oil. You know, the legal stuff you rub on Grandma’s shoulders to help with her bursitis. No, we’re not joking.

One of the stores was GM Tobacco, which bills itself as a full-service tobacco shop, selling cigarettes, cigars, pipes and pipe tobacco, electronic cigarettes, and, yes, CBD oil. That oil is used for a variety of reasons, from sleep disorders to the treatment of anxiety and PTSD. The Duncanville police had sent undercover agents into the stores several times to purchase the oil.

CBD oil has been legal in Texas for particular ailments for some time. Though it comes from the cannabis plant, it is made from the hemp variety and has very little of the THC that creates a high. On the day of the raids, Texas had just legalized all hemp products in the state. The Duncanville police got away with the raids mostly because the hemp-legalization law would not go into effect until three weeks later.

But the bust was crummy. Police seized more than 10,000 vials of CBD oil and other CBD products, 37 pounds of hemp they called “cannabis,” employees’ cell phones, the stores’ surveillance cameras, and $11,841 from the registers and a safe. The police also claimed to have seized weapons but, after we asked, did not identify what they were and whether they were legal or illegal.

Fast forward to today: The Duncanville police have not returned any of the items seized, nor have they made any arrests. They evidently have not found anything illegal but are continuing to hold up the return of the funds and CBD products — which would be worthless now as they could have been tampered with by someone in the police department.

Amy Wazwaz, who owns the stores with her husband Houd Wazwaz, told us that there is no timeframe at the moment for when the merchandise and money will be returned. “It’s crazy,” she said, “because they have found nothing illegal in what we were doing at all, but with the end of the year approaching, we’ll be taking a $100,000 loss from our businesses when we file our taxes. You would think someone would be paying attention, wouldn’t you?”

Yes, we would, Amy. But then again, the Duncanville police department appears not to have paid any attention to anything with relation to this ridiculous raid.

Gov. Dan Patrick for their blind allegiance to — and ability to bend over backward for — President Trump. Their worst display was a twin-top affair when they appeared at Dallas’ October 17 Trump rally.

The event, which did not fill the 20,000-seat American Airlines Center, was loud and angry. And full of fear. “If they take Texas,” Cornyn boomed, referring, no doubt, to Dems and their paganworshipping ways, “they will take the U.S. Senate. If they take Texas, they will take the White House. But we can’t let that happen.

presidential candidate Beto O’Rourke — who was holding a counter rally in Grand Prairie that night — and said that Trump would draw more people to the portable toilets in the arena than O’Rourke would draw to his rally. (O’Rourke filled the 5,500-seat arena that night.)

“Since you elected him,” Patrick said, “he has done nothing but win and win and win and win and win. Name a topic! The economy. The stock market. The strongest military. Oil and gas industry. Moving our embassy to Jerusalem. Every issue. The Supreme Court.”

Boy, that’s a lot of winning. But the truth is that while people are working (often two jobs), wages have not gone up; the stock market is up, but no one we know, and we know hundreds of people, is directly affected by it, only their rich bosses; and the Supreme Court is a sham because someone with deep pockets bought and paid for the

In April 2018, Sessions, preparing for a tough fight for re-election in North Dallas, was surprisingly invited to a fundraiser at Mar-a-Lago, a.k.a. the White House South. The only Congressperson invited to the high roller event that starred the president, Sessions said yes.

Among the people he met there were Lev Parnas and Igor Fruman, two Sovietborn United States citizens looking to break into the natural gas business in Ukraine –– and clients of the disgraced former mayor Rudy Giuliani. Both have since been indicted on campaign fraud charges but have pleaded not guilty.

But long before their recent arrests, Parnas and Fruman were trying to inveigle their way into Ukraine gas policy. Standing in their way was United States Ambassador

Amber Guyger was a fully trained police officer in whom we had entrusted our safety. Botham Jean was, by all accounts, a thoroughly nice guy. While minding his own business in his own apartment, wearing his own underpants while sitting on his own couch, watching his own TV, and eating his own ice cream that he had bought with his own money that he had earned, Jean succumbed to the sin of being black and breathing in the United States of America: shot in the chest by the intruding police officer, off duty, in uniform, with her service weapon. Surprisingly, a full murder trial ensued. According to a contact inside the courtroom, everyone was astonished that Guyger seemed destined to be found guilty, but, surely, she would receive the cops’ benefit and endure only a rap on the knuckles. Guilty of murder in the first degree was the verdict handed down by 12 good and true men and women of the jury. During the sentencing hearing that followed, it was laid out that the sentencing guidelines were as few as five years and as many as 90. Guyger got 10. Botham Jean remains dead, forever. Local folks freaked out and protested, the district attorney’s office declared that they would respect the judge’s sentence, the Jean family spoke

Smacking Lips It was late July, and the mercury was bubbling. As Texans toiled, vacationed, or lightly complained in and about the annual heat-a-palooza, politics was about to top triple digits. Long story short, Bonnen is not seeking reelection in 2020. He asked God about it, and the big guy in the sky, curiously absent when Dennis was doing the dirty, said that it was time to go. Well, time to go at the end of next year, after another 12 months of Capitol comforts.

Low-Wattage Stove Where to start with this guy? First off, Rick Perry deserves some sort of award, and a Turkey will do, for perceptibly morphing into the Thunderbird puppet of his own self. Second off, quit embarrassing Texas on the daily. You are putting our state-level politicians out of a job. Third and foremost, the whole Ukraine thing.

It is alleged that Perry is one of the Three Amigos of the Ukraine scandal, which makes him, I guess, a massively unfunny and talentless Steve Martin-like figure. One of the other two glue factory-bound nags being dragged to Shitsville is ambassador to the EU Gordon Sondland, who donated $1 million to Trump’s inauguration fund for the privilege of the ambassadorship, no doubt. He is likely Chevy Chase, and Kurt Volker is Martin Short. Volker until recently performed in the unpaid and marginally unspecific role of “special

envoy” after a career split between public service and private wealth accumulation.

Perry is quitting his Secretary of Energy gig, a move announced at the outset of the impeachment inquiry. Naturally, these two things are entirely unrelated as Perry wishes to, in the best traditions of a pol about to get caught, spend more time with his family. There’s that and the crushing realization that even a Texan blowhard (a tautology?) will run out of hot air in the end.

Wag the Turkey Dogs in Arlington should be more skittish than a plump turkey on Thanksgiving when police officer Jesse Davis responds to a call. Davis has displayed a tendency to unholster his weapon and gun down people’s pets. Does Davis carry a repressed hatred of man’s best friend? Did a toy poodle bite his ankle on the way to kindergarten? We don’t know, but we suggest ol’ Dead-Eye see a freaking shrink. In May 2018, Davis shot Max, a German Shepherd pup, while on duty. Max is the third dog killed by Davis that we know of. A witness said the shooting was uncalled for and the dog was acting friendly and wagging its tail before being struck by at least four bullets from Davis’ weapon. An internal investigation into the shooting took nine months, and investigators cleared Davis in February.

In 2011, Davis shot a family pet five times –– missing once –– in front of the dog’s owner and children. Bucky, a 2-year-old Dachshund/beagle mix, had stubby legs and floppy ears. Bucky’s owner said his autistic son relied on the dog as a therapy pet. Bucky’s owner said the dog was being playful rather than aggressive when it ran out the door toward Davis. The police officer shot another dog in 2009.

Most concert music is for a piano and some other instrument that treats the piano as accompaniment. The theme of this week’s Cliburn at the Kimbell concert is music for cello and piano that regards the keyboard instrument as an equal partner. This is likely why the foundation is billing both Camille Thomas and Roman Rabinovich for their duo recital on Thursday.

The program includes Brahms’ First Cello Sonata, in which the composer specifically noted that the piano was to be an equal partner in the music. (Brahms was known as an accomplished pianist, but relatively few people knew that he was also skilled on the cello.) There’s also a set of variations by Beethoven and a duet from Mozart’s The Magic Flute.

After a German first half, the program switches to French in its second half. Messiaen’s “Louange à l’Eternité de Jésus” is a movement from his Quartet for the End of Time, a work written while the composer was a prisoner in a Nazi concentration camp. After this comes the comparatively light Franck Cello Sonata, which has been arranged for numerous other instruments and proceeds from ambiguous beginnings into a final movement of unmistakable triumph.

The best things at the 13th version of the Lone Star Film Festival came during its latter half. This isn’t to be wondered at, as the festival devoted its last day to repeat screenings of its prize winners. The film that won the best documentary prize was Netflix vs. the World, and while I can’t be sure, I think it does appeal to more than just cinephiles like me who think hard about how films are distributed. I think Netflix subscribers everywhere will be interested in this, partly because documentarian Shawn Cauthen interviews numerous people from Blockbuster Video, detailing how the vanquished competitor wanted their share of the DVD delivery market but trusted their web interface to a Houston company called Enron (oops) and then balked at paying $50 million to buy Netflix (bigger oops).

Even with this, Blockbuster was making a dent in Netflix’s business with their Total Access program that allowed customers to

return DVDs at the Blockbuster stores, but Carl Icahn and his merry band of venture capitalists shut the program down. I wish the filmmakers had included more on whether the company’s algorithm is truly recommending what people want, as well as the aesthetic experience of watching at home versus on a big screen. However, it’s good that somebody says Netflix makes crap like Bright and The Cloverfield Paradox in addition to their Oscar winners.

Just Mercy is old-fashioned Oscar bait starring Michael B. Jordan as Bryan Stevenson, the real-life Harvard-trained lawyer who set up a foundation in Alabama in 1989 to take prisoners off Death Row. In a film starring Jordan and Brie Larson, I wasn’t expecting Jamie Foxx to steal the movie away as the wrongfully convicted killer whom Bryan frees as his first success story. Too often we forget that Foxx is capable of greatness when he’s given the chance, but he does fantastic work as a man whose faith and personality inspire hope not only in the other prisoners but also in his young attorney. I’m a bit concerned that Destin Daniel Cretton’s filmmaking seems to be losing its distinctiveness since his debut Short Term 12 (which, like all of

Cretton’s films to date, involved Larson), but his film manages to get its point across without hammering it.

I was less enamored of A Hidden Life, because Terrence Malick plays so precisely to type in telling the story of Franz Jägerstätter (August Diehl), the real-life Austrian conscientious objector executed for refusing to fight for the Nazis. Malick gives us anamorphic lenses, actors filmed heroically from below, heartbreakingly beautiful shots of the Alpine countryside (plus those magnificent rococo churches they have in Austria), and agonized monologues about our purpose on Earth, all at a length of three hours. The movie addresses what a Christian is to do when the government is evil, but Malick’s filmmaking no longer does much for me.

The best thing I saw at the festival was Ladj Ly’s Les Misérables, which is neither an adaptation of the Broadway musical nor one of Victor Hugo’s novel. Rather, it’s a French version of Training Day, as a rookie cop on his first day (Damien Bonnard) goes for a ridealong with two Paris detectives and discovers that his white boss (Alexis Manenti) uses his badge to grope underage girls on the street with impunity. Ironically, his black Muslim

boss (Djibril Zonga) is the one who shoots an unarmed black boy point-blank in the face, and the whole thing is filmed by a kid with a drone. The film turns into a tense cop thriller — I like the French term, policier noir — as the three officers try to recover the drone footage before it gets out, while the neighborhood is ready to erupt in violence among blacks, Muslims, and Romani, with the cops becoming everyone’s target.

Amazon is distributing this, so you’ll likely have a chance to see it.

I wasn’t able to see nearly as many short films as I wanted to, but I enjoyed Sachin Dheeraj’s documentary The Bubbleman, about Joseph “The Bubbleman” Losoya, an Air Force veteran who dresses like a hippie and shows up on Texas State University’s campus in San Marcos to blow soap bubbles and help the students work out stress. David Velez’ Ladybug is a funny short about a boy who seeks revenge on his older brother for killing his pet insect, and the funniest short I saw was a Spanish import, Camilo Castro and Ricardo San Emeterio’s Grandma’s Pie, a wordless animated film about an old lady in a medieval village who goes about baking an apple pie while a dragon eats and otherwise kills knights in the street. l

quarterbacks like Sam Darnold and Jeff Driskel look like Steve Young circa 1994.

Then there’s the running game. For consecutive weeks, running back Ezekiel Elliott has looked like he was running into a concrete dividing wall. He’s failed to rush for more than 47 yards in either of the last two games, averaging an abysmal 2.5 yards per carry over that span. Not exactly what we were expecting from the highest-paid running back in the league.

It’s not all his fault, however. He does look a step or two slower than last year when he won the rushing title for the second time, but the highly vaunted (and equally well-compensated) offensive line has been downright awful in their zone blocking at times, and the gaps that you once could drive an earth-mover through now seem barely able to accommodate a grease-coated ferret. I’m not too worried about it –– yet. Though the rushing title this year appears destined for either Dalvin Cook or Christian McCaffrey, Zeke is still on pace for 1,400 yards and 12 touchdowns.

You could argue whether production like that is worth $90M or not.

The crazy thing is, the Cowboys haven’t really missed him. Thanks to quarterback and full-grown man Dak Prescott, the offense has averaged nearly 30 points and 420 yards through the air with Zeke bottled up these last two games. In four games this season, the young signalcaller has thrown for at least 375 yards and two touchdowns, a feat matched only by the great Joe Montana. Amazingly, Prescott is currently on pace for well over 5,000 yards and 38 total touchdowns. The Seahawks’ Russell Wilson and the Ravens’ Lamar Jackson are getting all the attention, but if Dallas had even a slightly better record, Prescott would be squarely in the MVP talk. Perhaps he still should be.

For more than five years now, the identity of the Dallas Cowboys has been that of a smash-mouth, “run the ball down your throats,” “you know what we’re going to do, but you can’t stop it”-type of running team. With the leap that Prescott has taken, along with arguably one of the best receiving corps in the league, the air game is currently dwarfing the ground game in importance. As owner Jerry Jones famously said after rookie running back Tony Pollard’s promising preseason performance in reference to Elliott who was in the middle of a holdout, “Zeke who?”

I’m curious to see which aspect of the Cowboys offense Bill Belichick will focus on for next week’s game against the Patriots in Foxborough. Belichick is known for identifying a team’s best strength and taking it away. The Cowboys’ reputation says that attention should be paid to Elliott. Recent history suggests, however, that Belichick may want to instead focus on trying to slow down Prescott. It will be interesting to see if he can. l

If the original left you frustrated because it never gave Groff his own big musical moment, this is ample compensation. The heavier stuff gives the story some juice, too, as the sisters discover that their ancestors did some bad things — like, genocidally bad — to expand the kingdom. If Frozen II doesn’t look to be the cultural behemoth that the first movie was, it shows that there are still things worth finding beneath the ice. l

Back before robots were so commonly used in place of people in the workforce, an actual human being was once the head coach of the Dallas Cowboys. Accustomed as we are now to the SATA-drive whir of Coachspeak XP being run on Coach Jason Garrett-Bot, it’s easy to forget that we were once treated to occasional bits of personality and wisdom during a coach’s press conference. One such bit of sagacity came from Hall of Famer Bill Parcells when he said, “You are what your record says you are.” It’s simple but erudite.

Unfortunately, I’m not sure Parcells’ famous axiom fairly applies to this 2019 season so far. After going .500 in backto-back games against the NFC North — losing in maddening fashion to the Vikings at home thanks to some stupefying playcalling that killed a potential comeback and

Let’s get this out of the way: The sequel to Frozen was never going to be as awesome or as ground-breaking as the 2013 animated hit, which so dexterously remixed the old Disney tropes into something new. Frozen II doesn’t do this, but I find myself not caring so much about its issues, and it’s not just because of the goodwill left over from the first movie.

Once again, climate change comes to Arendelle, given a nudge by Elsa (voiced

by Idina Menzel). When the city on the

managing to just outscore the Lions offense on the road that looked unstoppable even without Matthew Stafford and Kerryon Johnson — the Cowboys now sit at 6-4 and are just clinging to a division lead over the Eagles.

Somehow, 6-4 tells us very little about how good or bad this club really is. It could be argued that they should have as many as nine wins –– they’ve been in all but the Green Bay game with a chance to win or tie on their final drive. Then again, owing to the frustrating habit of falling behind early, they might have as few as three or four wins if not for a couple of those comebacks clicking. Dubs are dubs, and we’ll take every one, but the win total doesn’t tell the whole story when you consider that through 10 games, Dallas has yet to beat a team with a winning record. This team has problems — quite a few of them.

The defense, from whom so much was expected heading into the year, seems to have a ceiling of mediocrity. In their worst moments, they’ve made unproven

or the 4th year in a row, United Way of Tarrant County invested in local entrepreneurs focused on social innovation designed to make significant changes in key community challenges. On Thursday, November 7th, the annual Kernel Live! event was held in Downtown Fort Worth at Four Day Weekend. A packed house enjoyed three moving presentations from three unique organizations. The presentations (in a very Shark Tank style) were made to select judges, and the audience at large for a chance to win a portion of $50,000 in seed funding to grow their programs.

Each program had a different initiative to assist the Fort Worth area and find solutions to social problems.

The finalist of the group, Jakayla Dixon who created Feel the Color, inspired the crowd by discussing the challenges her blind Aunt has had selecting clothing options and her goal to create a solution to help her and other visually impaired individuals.

When asked what was one thing she hoped to achieve with her product, Dixon replied, “I hope that people become aware of the issues that the visually impaired community faces on a daily basis.”

It was predicted, by me, that TCU’s oft-struggling offense would appear much improved during their visit to the metropolitan tumbleweed capital of Texas. I was right. Luckily for offensive coordinator Sonny Cumbie and his quickly improving freshman quarterback, Max Duggan (No. 15), the Red Raiders aren’t and have never been known for playing stout defense.

Cumbie and company accomplished something out of character: They started fast. Duggan willed his comrades through the opening drive with heady running from the ginger gunslinger, motoring for a 26-yard scramble on third and long from midfield. He rambled again from the 20 yard-line for the opening touchdown.

Not to be outdone, Coach Gary Patterson’s defense continued the party by picking off Tech’s Jett Duffey (No. 7) to award their counterparts excellent field position

Purple receivers played as a revived unit after last week’s field-goal fest. Barber thrilled with multiple circus catches and finished with more than 100 yards. Reagor wasn’t far

behind. Duggan, in addition to finishing with the second-most rushing yards, exploded with 323 passing yards and two touchdowns with zero interceptions. The frosh completed multiple passes to seven separate receivers, and his legs are a notso-secret match-up problem for defensive coordinators. Song is automatic and has missed only one kick this season. He nailed four three-pointers on Saturday and is the least dramatic part of an offense that could send the healthiest fan running for the baby aspirin.

leading to the first of many Jonathan Song (No. 46) field goals. Duggan’s arm anchored the following two drives with chunk passes to Taye Barber (No. 4) and Jalen Reagor (No. 1) for an early 24-3 lead. Frog nation was awash with euphoria. Everything was going their way.

And then, it wasn’t. Shoddy tackling from the purple kickoff unit delivered Duffey a mere 37 yards from the end zone.

Within four plays, the Red Raiders dashed hopes of Fort Worth’s train chugging away with this game easily. Punts were exchanged before Duffey capitalized on a confused Froggy secondary for a 70-yard touchdown strike. The Red Raiders trailed by eight points courtesy of a shanked extra point attempt. With less than two minutes left in the half, Cumbie’s offense deked and dunked their way to Tech’s 11 yardline only to be stymied by the clock and the decision to gamble for seven points or use Song’s almost automatic leg for three.

Patterson chose the latter and contentedly watched the bands play leading 27-16.

The third quarter reeked of earlier season failures. The offense couldn’t sustain a meaningful drive. Defensive calls misfired, allowing Duffey to bullseye receivers skipping deep behind safety coverage for lackadaisical catches yielding two additional touchdowns. Multiple failed conversion attempts left the Lubbockites clinging to a single-digit lead with little signs of life from TCU’s offense save for a long drive for another field goal at the beginning of the fourth frame to reclaim a two-point advantage. The lead pingponged twice more as each side leaned on their kickers. Duffey took the ball with more than two minutes remaining trailing by two. The situation emitted the all-toofamiliar feeling that things were about to turn against our boys. Mercifully, a first-

A bowl game seems attainable for this group of mostly freshmen Frogs. The Sooners and Mountaineers remain, the latter of which is winnable even with a shoddy performance. OU is coming off an unlikely come-from-behind victory in Waco after the crimson-and-cream’s wheels fell off their covered wagon during the first half. Patterson’s secondary was embarrassingly out of position multiple times against Tech’s passing attack. Star cornerback Jeff Gladney (No. 12) was ejected in the third quarter for targeting after mollywhopping a Red Raider so hard my television went out. Gladney is the nerve center of the secondary, and his absence was immediately obvious. The senior won’t be available until the second half against the Sooners, thanks to the second-half exit, and the young’uns will do their darndest to hold it together against Oklahoma’s vaunted passing attack. I’m afraid Fort Worth’s finest could execute their best game plan in Norman and still come up short. Still, a bowl game after the trials of this season will and should be considered a positive result if they make it after a victory against West Virginia in the final week. l

The Addams Family (PG) With the cartoon family created by Charles Addams returning to its roots, and with Oscar Isaac voicing Gomez and Charlize Theron as Morticia, you’d think this would come to more. The Addamses deal with a gentrifying neighborhood and an evil home makeover TV host (voiced by Allison Janney) who’s bent on tearing down their eyesore of a house. The animation doesn’t match the weirdness of the subject matter. The only thing that does is the subplot in which Wednesday (voiced by Chloë Grace Moretz) starts attending public school. She’s the serene Goth heart of this thing, and there’s a nice Eighth Grade callback in the casting of Elsie Fisher as a girl at school who goes Goth with her. Additional voices by Finn Wolfhard, Nick Kroll, Martin Short, Catherine O’Hara, Tituss Burgess, Jenifer Lewis, Aimee Garcia, Pom Klementieff, Bette Midler, and Snoop Dogg.

Bala (NR) Ayushmann Khuranna stars in this Indian comedy as a prematurely bald young man who wears a hairpiece so he can be confident enough to date a fashion model (Yami Gautam) who works for the cosmetics company where he’s an executive. Too much of the movie plays like an Indian version of boilerplate Hollywood comedies about learning to accept yourself, but the film does have an intriguing side plot with both the hero and India’s beauty industry as a whole ignoring his childhood friend (Bhumi Pednekar) because she has dark skin. Colorism is a thing in Indian society and culture, and it’s refreshing to have a film address the subject. Also with Abhishek Banerjee, Saurabh

Shukla, Javed Jaffrey, Sunita Rajwar, Seema Bhargava, Manoj Pahwa, Sonam Bajwa, and Hardy Sandhu.

Charlie’s Angels (PG-13) Poofy escapism packaged with shallow, rah-rah feminism doesn’t do much for me. This newest big-screen version of the 1970s TV show is about a computer programmer (Emily Scott) who enlists the help of Bosley (Elizabeth Banks) and her Angels (Kristen Stewart and Ella Balinska) to help destroy her own invention before it can be weaponized. Banks is also the writer-director here, and she has no instincts for filming action sequences. The male villains tend to be uninteresting, and the movie fails to invest us emotionally in the Angels. Stewart and Scott are funny, and there are nice supporting turns by Sam Claflin as a wimpy tech mogul and Luis Gerardo Méndez as a New Age wellness guru who can make spy gadgets and weapons. The director is miscast. Also with Patrick Stewart, Djimon Hounsou, Noah Centineo, Chris Pang, Nat Faxon, MarieLou Sellem, and Jaclyn Smith.

Doctor Sleep (R) Stephen King’s sequel to his own novel The Shining is adapted into this dreary, scare-free horror film.

Ewan McGregor plays a grown-up, recovering alcoholic Danny Torrance who is located by a little girl (Kyliegh Curran) with his powers of “shining” and who’s being hunted by a group of traveling demons who feed off the shine. Director Mike Flanagan has done some good work in Netflix thrillers (Hush, Gerald’s Game) that are set in enclosed spaces, but the far-flung plotlines of this movie defeat him. He’s too busy making callbacks to Stanley Kubrick’s 1980 horror opus to give this thing the chills that it could have. Also with Rebecca Ferguson, Cliff Curtis, Emily Alyn Lind, Bruce Greenwood, Zahn McClarnon, Alex Essoe, Carl Lumbly, Henry Thomas, Zackary Momoh, Jocelin Donahue, and Jacob Tremblay.

Ford v Ferrari (PG-13) Solid entertainment, whether you’re a racing fan or not. This film tells the real-life story of how retired Texan racer Carroll Shelby (Matt Damon) and crusty English driver Ken Miles (Christian Bale) were brought on by Ford Motors to build a race car that would defeat Ferrari’s five-time champions at the 24 Hours of Le Mans. If you get all misty-eyed for the era when American industrial might and know-how always carried the day, this is your movie. If not, the film still traces how the work away from the racetrack contributes to victories on race day, as well as the clash between Ford’s corporate culture and the freewheeling spirits who drive the cars, all without dumbing down the car talk. The movie runs off the dynamic between Damon and Bale, who make an assured team. Also with Jon Bernthal, Caitriona Balfe, Josh Lucas, Noah Jupe, Remo Girone, Ray McKinnon, JJ Feild, and Tracy Letts.

The Good Liar (R) Helen Mirren is a wealthy London widow, and Ian McKellen is a con artist who woos her to get to her £3 million fortune. The matchup of these two lions of British acting lives up to its billing, but the same can’t be said for the vehicle around them. Based on Nicholas Searle’s novel, this thriller has good material, but Bill Condon is the wrong director for something that’s supposed to snap shut like a steel trap. He clumsily handles the flashbacks to World War II. You’ll have to satisfy yourself with the chess match that goes on between the two protagonists, as it becomes clear that the widow has her own game going against the charming suitor. Also with Russell Tovey, Jim Carter, Jóhannes Haukur Jóhannesson, Mark Lewis Jones, Laurie Davidson, Phil Dunster, and Lucian Msamati.

Harriet (PG-13) This biopic of Harriet Tubman is disappointingly conventional. Cynthia Erivo plays the slave who escapes to freedom and then works as the Underground Railroad’s greatest conductor to help more Southern slaves find their way north. Director Kasi Lemmons doesn’t have much feel for the action sequences, and the material (written by her and Gregory Allen Howard) is weak. At least it would be something if this movie succeeded in turning the wizened old woman from the photographs into a swashbuckling action heroine, but the film never brings her to life and stops dead every so often to give Harriet a speech about how she would give her life for the freedom of her people.

These are the failings of a much lesser filmmaker. The movie fails despite the best efforts of Erivo, whose singing is something you can listen to all day. Also with Leslie Odom Jr., Joe Alwyn, Clarke Peters, Vanessa Bell Calloway, Zackary Momoh, Omar J. Dorsey, Jennifer Nettles, Vondie Curtis-Hall, and Janelle Monáe.

Jojo Rabbit (PG-13) A strange and compelling failure. Based on Christine Leunens’ much more serious novel Caging Skies, this satirical film stars Roman Griffin Davis as a 10-year-old boy in Nazi Germany who is such a fanatical Nazi that Adolf Hitler (Taika Waititi) appears to him as an

Pain and Glory (R) This superior effort from Pedro Almodóvar stars Antonio Banderas as an extremely Almodóvar-like world-famous filmmaker who looks back on his childhood while dealing with physical ailments that have stopped him from making films. The movie has two great scenes, first when the director pens an anguished autobiographical monologue about a heroin-addicted boyfriend for an actor friend (Asier Etxeandia) to deliver, and then when the boyfriend in question (Leonardo Sbaraglia) happens to be at the performance and reunites with the filmmaker. Banderas’ performance reminds you of what a great actor he was for Almodóvar, showing the shrinking of a man holed up in his Madrid mansion with his books and artworks as well as a guy who’s too ashamed to tell his recovering heroin addict friends that he’s on the stuff himself to alleviate his pain.

The layer of metafiction as the protagonist recovers his health enough to make films gives this the feel of an intricate puzzle. Also with Penélope Cruz, Nora Navas, César Vicente, Asier Flores, Cecilia Roth, Susi Sánchez, and Julieta Serrano.

Parasite (R) This delirious, dark Korean farce helps make a case for Bong Joon-ho as one of the greatest filmmakers of all time — not today, all time. It’s about a family named Kim that lives in urban squalor until their teenage son (Choi Woo-shik) fakes his way into a job as an English tutor to a wealthy family’s daughter. He then conspires with the rest of his family (Song Kang-ho, Jang Hye-jin, and Park So-dam) to get the rich family to fire the rest of their domestic help and install the other Kims in those jobs, with everyone pretending not to know one another. Bong pulls some dazzlingly dexterous comedy from the Kims operating beneath the notice of their employers, with help from great comic performances across the board from his cast, and he takes the film into darker territory with one of the great “oh my God” plot twists in this year’s movies. The film’s indictment of capitalist society is savage, compassionate, and terribly funny. Also with Lee Sun-kyun, Jo Yeo-jeong, Jung Ji-so, Jung Hyun-jun, Lee Jeong-eun, Park Myeonghoon, and Park Seo-joon.

Playing With Fire (PG) This comedy is so defanged, it could have been a Disney movie from the 1960s. John Cena plays a promotion-obsessed California smoke jumper who rescues three kids (Brianna Hildebrand, Christian Convery, and Finley Rose Slater) from a cabin fire and is forced to look after them in his immaculate fire station until their parents come to get them. That’s the occasion for obvious jokes, slapstick gags, oppressive overacting, and soppy drama about how the perfectionist firefighter has to learn to loosen up. If that’s not bad enough, the film throws a cuddly dog into the mix. Chalk up yet another kids’ movie that works as a torture device on any parents who accompany their children. Also with John Leguizamo, Keegan-Michael Key, Judy Greer, Tyler Mane, and Dennis Haysbert.

Terminator: Dark Fate (R) Just like Logan and Rambo, this series heads south of the border to retire. Ignoring all the previous Terminator films except the first two, this one has an aged Sarah Connor (Linda Hamilton) teaming up with a cyborg operative (Mackenzie Davis) from the future who has been sent to protect a young Mexican woman (Natalia Reyes) who will be the new savior of humanity.

Tim Miller (Deadpool) takes over the series and engineers a cool car chase and shootout on a bridge, and Davis is in fearsome fighting trim. However, there are too many flashbacks, flash-forwards, and callbacks littering the action, and the filmmakers can’t make us invest in the closure of Sarah and the T-800 (Arnold Schwarzenegger), who is now a curtain installer named Carl. It wasn’t worth the effort to recharge this battery. Also with Gabriel Luna, Ferran Fernández, and Diego Boneta.

Zombieland: Double Tap (R) Ten years after the first film, all four of the principal cast members return with their enthusiasm undimmed, a principal reason why this sequel is so watchable. The group holes up inside the remains of the White House, but Little Rock (Abigail Breslin) goes chasing after a boy her age, and Wichita (Emma Stone) runs after her in a panic after Columbus (Jesse Eisenberg) proposes marriage to her. Eisenberg and Stone are the engines that drive this comedy, and the film adds a scenestealing Zoey Deutch as a dumb blonde who joins the group and a delicious interlude with Tallahassee (Woody Harrelson) and Columbus meeting copies of themselves (Luke Wilson and Thomas Middleditch). The original’s subtext might be lost, but who cares when returning director Ruben Fleischer is on hand to stage more inventive zombie kills? Also with Rosario Dawson, Avan Jogia, and Bill Murray.

imaginary friend. Waititi also writes and directs this film, and the early scenes at Hitler Youth camp play like Moonrise Kingdom with more swastikas. Waititi’s hand for comedy makes this more watchable than other films that try to take in the Nazi horror from a child’s limited perspective, but the filmmaker loses his footing when the proceedings turn serious and characters start dying. As failures go, this is brave, ambitious, somewhat insane, and aiming at a worthy target. You can see the better film that Waititi was trying to make. Also with Scarlett Johansson, Thomasin McKenzie, Rebel Wilson, Alfie Allen, Stephen Merchant, Archie Yates, and Sam Rockwell.

Joker (R) What could have been a dark satire on society and its cruelty instead exploits mental illness. Joaquin Phoenix stars as an aspiring comedian with a socially inconvenient mental condition that makes him a target for bullies, which in turn makes him turn into the clown makeupwearing supervillain. The film is angry, mean-spirited, plodding, joyless, depressing, and entirely derivative of Taxi Driver. Worse, it stigmatizes mental illness by taking one such character and raising him up as an antihero for killing rich people. Phoenix does give one of the best performances of his career, but everything else is just background noise. Also with Robert De Niro, Frances Conroy, Zazie Beetz, Brett Cullen, Shea Whigham, Bill Camp, Marc Maron, Josh Pais, Douglas Hodge, April Grace, and Brian Tyree Henry. — Chase Whale Judy (R) Looking bleary, alcohol-soaked, and prematurely aged, Renée Zellweger does an uncannily precise imitation of Judy Garland in this biopic that takes in the singer as she plays five weeks in a London nightclub in the winter of 1968. The part shows off her gift for mimicry, and she’s probably a better singer than Garland was at the sadly diminished late-career stage that’s portrayed here.

The film is based on Peter Quilter’s stage play End of the Rainbow, and it doesn’t have much to say about the traumas of child stardom lingering into adulthood. Beyond the lead performance, the film is rather indifferently cast.

Zellweger’s performance deserves better than this lukewarm show business tragedy. Also with Jessie Buckley, Finn Wittrock, Rufus Sewell, Bella Ramsey, Royce Pierreson, Phil Dunster, Darci Shaw, Andy Nyman, and Michael Gambon.

Last Christmas (PG-13) A movie with too much on its plate.

Emilia Clarke (working a bit too hard to show that she can be funny) portrays an aspiring singer who has been in a downward spiral ever since she received a life-saving heart transplant. She’s given a new sense of purpose when she meets a manic pixie dream guy (Henry Golding) whose only purpose is to make her rediscover her zest for life. Emma Thompson both portrays the main character’s Croatian mother and writes the script, and she gives it sidebars on Brexit, the Bosnian genocide, and a plot twist that even M. Night Shyamalan would be ashamed to use. The film is inspired by George Michael’s songs, which dot the soundtrack. Some of them are sung by Clarke, who is quite comfortable singing them. Also with Michelle Yeoh, Lydia Leonard, Peter Mygind, Peter Serafinowicz, and Patti LuPone.

Maleficent: Mistress of Evil (PG) The storylines are at least clearer in this sequel. Angelina Jolie returns as the dark fairy queen who has to deal with a warmongering, secretly evil human queen (Michelle Pfeiffer) after their respective children (Elle Fanning and Harris Dickinson) want to get married to unite the human and fairy kingdoms. The filmmakers give us one good scene with Jolie and Pfeiffer locking horns over a family dinner where the tension boils over into outright hostility. Other than that, there’s too much CGI, too many moving parts, and too many action sequences muddling this film’s message about dealing with the politics of fear. Also with Chiwetel Ejiofor, Sam Riley, Ed Skrein, Juno Temple, Imelda Staunton, Lesley Manville, Jenn Murray, David Gyasi, and Robert Lindsay.

Midway (PG-13) This movie would have been better if it had been made in 2003. Fallen blockbuster specialist Roland Emmerich (Independence Day) helms this dramatic retelling of the events leading up to the Battle of Midway, which established American superiority in the Pacific theater during World War II. The film benefits from scenes set on the Japanese side demonstrating what their thinking was as their fleet sailed into a trap set by the Americans. Still, the writing is indistinct, Ed Skrein (as American pilot Dick Best) doesn’t have the charisma to carry such a large and far-flung plot, and the opening scene depicting the bombing of Pearl Harbor suffers from really bad CGI. The whole thing suffers from too much research obscuring the action. Since the departure of Salsa Limon several years ago, there’s been a breakfast tacoshaped hole across from the TCU campus that the surrounding restaurants never could fill. With the expansion of Dutch’s Legendary Hamburgers into burritos and tacos in the space vacated by various failed retail shops and bars, Dutch’s Burrito Bar is ably filling that niche. The fast-casual restaurant offers a build-your-own array of proteins, carbs, wraps, and bowls.

The breakfast menu is pretty sparse, but four taco options plus a few pastries and some yogurt are probably enough to fuel any college student. The breakfast

Dear Fort Worth Diners, I hope this letter finds you well and you’re all enjoying the new concept restaurants imported from all over the country. That sounds exciting-ish –– like the Disneyland version of a restaurant scene.

As I write you today, I’m in something of a crisis state.

As you no doubt remember, some of the best restaurants in the city (according to me) seem to have the shortest life spans. I’ve never gotten over the way premature closings of places like AF&B, Le Cep, Revolver Taco Lounge, Sera, and a few other favorites that weren’t birthed by focus groups or a Dallas strip mall.

I keep thinking, “If only I had done more to help them.” Alas, I’m a restaurant columnist, not a PR firm.

It’s not really my job to advocate for people to go to a restaurant. I’m supposed to just tell the truth, sprinkle in a yuk or two, and let readers decide for themselves. The problem is, it seems that people would rather overspend at The Cheesecake Factory or some other corporate theme park disguised as a restaurant than keep a brilliant locally owned eatery in business.

taco of black bean, avocado, and cheese on corn (not housemade but nicely warmed on a flat grill) provided just the right amount of spice and contrasting textures, with its soft, velvety avocado and dense, mildly seasoned beans. One taco wasn’t quite enough, and the potato, egg, and cheese taco I ordered as an afterthought was actually much tastier. I topped the scrambled eggs, which were moist enough to tolerate sitting in a warmer without becoming desiccated, with the green chile queso. The queso is meant to be an upcharge condiment, but sweet co-owner Kay Greenlee just swaddled the egg and melted cheese in a corn tortilla for me and Choose your adventure at Dutch’s Burrito Bar. didn’t charge me more. The creamy, mild queso, with considerable chunks of green chile and onion, elevated the taco beyond that looks, smells, and is seasoned like traditional taco meat. The smoky tang of the standard breakfast fare.

On my recent visit, the progeny of beloved Paco & John was practically empty on a Saturday night. I felt restaurant-related PTSD. “Don’t ruin this for me, Fort Worth,” I thought.

Every Mexican restaurant above the taqueria level must answer one crucial question: Will it serve fine food, with a respect for regional differences and prime ingredients, or will it saunter down the cash-strewn path to Margaritaville? Paco’s is decidedly in the camp of the former: no combination platters, in other words.

As it is every time I’ve visited, the experience was near flawless. My guest and I started with the perfect pairing of appetizers: the gooey, rich queso fundido ($4.95) and the creamy, surprisingly spicy guacamole ($5.95). Combined on a hot, fresh-tasting chip and slathered with a heap of the smoky, piquant housemade salsa, the fusion of flavors made for the perfect bite.

Paco’s kitchen cranks out, hands-down, the best Mexican-inspired soups in the city. The poblano-queso soup ($5.95) is a master-class in elegant simplicity,

of older folks from the neighborhood (duh –– early Saturday mornings don’t attract college students). By mid-afternoon, the restaurant and its pass-through bar space between the burrito bar and Dutch’s Hamburgers was slowly filling up with purple-clad bodies wanting to watch the TCU game on several big screens. You can buy cerveza only at the Dutch’s burrito register, but walk 20 feet around a corner and you’ll find a selection of wine and booze at Dutch’s Locker Room (built on the remains of a boutique I never actually went into during my time at TCU).

You also have the choice of dining al fresco upstairs on the patio at Dutch’s Burgers or the smaller street-level patio at the Burrito Bar, which is sweetly appointed with upscale patio furniture and twinkling lights. Dutch’s Burritos is set apart from the other build-your-own franchises by the housemade salsas and spiced meats, even if the burrito and taco wrappers aren’t homemade. l

balance, and seasoning. The cheese and smoked pepper are strained into gliding smoothness, with fresh-tasting hunks of chicken, avocado, and queso fresco bobbing in the brew. The pozole ($7.95) was on special that night, and the heaping bowl of spicy pork-and-hominy stew was dotted with slivers of radish, lettuce, avocado, and queso fresco swimming in a rich broth.

We were tempted by the entree portion of mussels ($16.95) –– a throwback to chef/owner Francisco Islas’ days working at venerable fine-dinning stalwart SaintEmilion –– but had predetermined to order Dos Moles ($16.95). Pork tenderloin and quail arrived slathered in a dark, intense sauce. The result was almost goth. Imagine eating sauce of night.

Paco’s is adding a bar that’s set to open any day now. Hopefully that will drive more traffic to the place on weekend nights. Until then, you’ll find me there waving in walk-in traffic like marshalers on an airport tarmac –– professional etiquette be damned. Don’t ruin this for me.

Don’t Drive By, Dive In

We all have a bar or three that is entirely familiar. Perhaps we walk the dog by the place each day. Maybe we drive by these spots on our daily commute, communing with their visages at least twice daily, their edifices as familiar as a colleague’s face.

Just like most workmates, we know them only by appearance. What lies beneath are depths we’ve never plumbed. There are two such dive bars south of Bluebonnet Circle that I have encountered at least twice daily for the past four-plus years, but I’ve rarely deigned to explore.

The Poop Deck (3570 W Seminary Dr, 817-921 4861) sits in a tiny strip mall, sandwiched between a Mexican restaurant and a disheveled convenience store. On a recent weekend evening, my guests and I pulled into the parking lot and found one of only two spaces and were flanked on either side by pumped-up trucks. When we first opened the glass double-doors, a waft of warm air and the low buzz of a half-full bar rose out of the darkness. My immediate sense of the interior on first look was that of a neighborhood watering hole entirely comfortable in its own skin. Dudes shot pool, groups sat around pulled-together tables, and couples sat

on high stools snuggled closely around high-top tables. The bar was dotted with regulars who were served promptly by bartender Joe, who had learned their drink orders by rote.

Around 10pm, the bar started to fill with excited groups of mostly ladies in their 30s and 40s. A few more seasoned couples hugged the walls. Behind us was a big ol’ boy donning a shabby polo shirt and pants accompanied by a Hispanic guy dressed and coiffured like a young Elvis. The buzz in the then-cold room was like nothing I have experienced at a karaoke night. Surely there is money on offer for the best singers, we mused?

There was not. These guys simply loved to sing. Drinkers-turned-crooners mostly belted out classics. Studded between these vocal gems were songs by Tenacious D, Fall Out Boy, and a host of novelty bands. Song choice and performance of the night went to Joe, who nailed Digital Underground’s “Humpty Dance,” as the ever-smiling bar-back Chris took care of customers. The mic drop was heavily implied at the end. With temporary sadness, we chose this as the moment to drive up to our next venue.

Yupps Karaoke Bar (4111 Wedgway Dr, 817-346 2449) is best noticed while gassing up at Granbury Station QT. Otherwise, it is the sharp-eyed only who will see the bar sitting alone, with longforgotten arrogance, a couple hundred feet from the incessant thrum of Granbury Road traffic. I had been there a few years ago for a birthday bash few can distinctly remember. On entering, a stern-faced big

unit checks IDs. There is no craic with this guy. I know because I tried, as did others.

The space between the bar and nearside wall is narrow, made more so by barstools. The single-chamber opens out but never feels less than cramped with tables and chairs. The bartender boasts a neat range of tricks –– tossing and catching glasses and bottles –– but little by way of chat. Frosted mugs hold 10 ounces of domestics on tap, and the bar carries a good range of bottles, cans, and liquor.

Last Saturday, the place was infested with a group of around 20 TCU students on an epic drinkathon. That’s fine, as I bet our group looked that way on that birthday night. The DJ –– “or KJ” –– was amusingly snarky as shitfaced teen after shitfaced teen slaughtered early 2000s hip-hop, mainly. The “KJ” insisted on a change of tone as he took the stage to sing a tune of choice, but two students commandeered the spare mic, attempting to drown out our host, finishing the song by imploring the audience to “give it up” for him. We had seen enough. We left and, on immediate reflection, could see no persuasive reason to return.

This probably goes without saying, but I think the context of where, when, and how you consume music is crucial to how you appreciate it, and perhaps a balmy, shortsweather afternoon in the third week of November isn’t exactly right for an album like Eric Osbourne’s debut. But in the absence of the means to hole up in a rural cabin, isolated behind silent acres of bare branches and the visual hush of a landscape smothered in snow, a warm day during the last stretch of autumn is just something you make do with for such beautifully plaintive music. And anyway, Osbourne’s songs, drawn in melancholy shades by his lonely baritone and minor-key finger-picking, are kind of transportive that way. They take your mind to places like the low-lit oppression of a low-rent apartment, made darker by the dissolution of a relationship or the

In the fall of 2011, just as it was finally beginning to pick up some local buzz, moody shoegaze trio the Spiral Sound (of which I was a member) unceremoniously dissolved. After nearly a decade together, the group was beset by a rapidly cascading series of outside misfortunes. A major family illness immediately put the band on an indefinite hiatus.

This was soon followed by the unexpected shuttering of the building where the band rehearsed. Finally, the engineer who was recording the group’s upcoming sophomore album at the time suddenly broke his contract with his business partner and bolted to New York City with the studio’s gear, including the recorded tracks, rendering the album’s halfcompleted work forever unrecoverable.

Though the band never formally broke up, after a few years spent in limbo, drummer Paul Goetz relocated to Austin, and that was essentially that. Another misfortune hit when the home of singer/guitarist Christian Mauch was broken into, and the thieves made off with thousands of dollars’ worth of music and recording equipment amassed

over the band’s 10-year history. Suddenly, without a band and with no gear, Mauch felt directionless.

“I became a ghost,” he said of that early time after finding himself without the means to make music. “I didn’t write. I didn’t play. I just kind of ghosted around for a few years.”

Eventually, “the itch,” as he put it, started to tingle again, and atrophied muscles began to flex. He bought a beater acoustic guitar and began writing again.

“If you’re a songwriter, the songs are always there,” he said. “They have to come out. They won’t let you sleep if you don’t.”

Since 2015, he’s been writing and releasing material, still under the Spiral Sound moniker, recorded at his home on his iPhone. It’s an unconventional method born of necessity. Working service industry jobs, he had little money to try to re-acquire expensive recording equipment, but he found that with $10 here or $15 there spent on sound production applications, he could achieve a decent approximation. He credits the affordable technology for his resurgence as a musician.

“It’s amazing,” he said. “You can be dirt poor and DIY and still make music that sounds pretty good. That shit literally saved my life.”

unreality of a totally empty street at dusk. In his songs, Osbourne has wrought a superbly emotive debut, all the more interesting given that he’s been playing music for almost 20 years –– never mind that he’s been working on this album since 2013.

If I were reading this piece, this is where I might wonder who the hell Eric Osbourne is. Though he grew up here, he started bouncing around the Pacific Northwest and the upper part of the Midwest about 20 years ago.

He lived in Vancouver, Bellingham, and Seattle before heading east to Madison, Wisconsin. After that, he made it to Chicago and stayed there for a decade.

“I’ve been writing songs and sharing them with friends for over 20 years, though I didn’t play live much until I landed in Chicago and formed a band called Cellmates with [my friends] Mandy Ellis, Sabrina Rush, and Danah Olivetree around 2006,” Osbourne said. “We self-released an EP, Goodbye Songs, but that was my only release until this new record. After Cellmates disbanded, I continued to play solo and with Sabrina and Danah around Chicago until I moved back to Texas.”

During his time in Chicago, Osbourne became friends with a then-up-and-coming, now-pretty-famous indie songwriter, Angel Olsen, who sings backing vocals on the album. “We had a lot of mutual friends in Chicago and became friends through these folks,” Osborne said. “We appreciated many of the same musicians and often crossed paths at shows or parties. We lived very close to each other, too, so it wasn’t unusual to hang out and eat lentil soup or something on winter nights. I think we had similar ideas and feelings about songwriting in those days and that, in some ways, we learned from each other.”

Osbourne started his album in 2013, recording most of it in the second-story bedroom of an apartment on Chicago’s Logan Square. Olivetree played cello, Rush played violin, and Olsen sang over Osbourne’s guitar and vocals. Four years later, Osbourne finished the album after moving to Fort Worth. The DIY atmospherics –– the tape hiss, the sound of someone clanking dishes in the kitchen –– give the music an elegantly mournful ambience.

He will be self-releasing it at a time yet to be determined. “Truth be told, I’m not sure,” he said. “I’m

looking at doing a release show in Fort Worth mid-January with a tour of some kind to follow. I haven’t toured much before, and the people who played on this record are scattered.”

Osbourne’s influences are all over the place, ranging from Nina Simone, Vashti Bunyan, and Bjork to Townes Van Zandt, Leonard Cohen, and The Velvet Underground, but he said his songwriting tends to come from ineffable experiences, “like when first experiencing the vast beauty of landscapes, mountains, and cities,” he said. “It’s something I think about when writing.”

The stoic majesty of a mountain and the solitary exploration of a new cityscape are reflections in Osbourne’s songs, additional appropriate frames for contextualizing his sound, but so is the idea of emotional processing.

“Making music can be a way of letting go of something, like a memory, without having to lose it,” he said. “It can be therapeutic.”

So whether you’re wandering the frigid emptiness of a windswept city after dark or sitting on a balcony in some unseasonably pleasant sunshine, the imagery and impact of Eric Osbourne’s music is beneficial for your soul. l singles that serve as a follow-up to his 2018 album, Lowded. “Wants / Needs” is a dreamy acoustic ballad that is a fitting contrast to the uptempo, danceable “So, Julian,” the first of the pair of singles. Paired together, the tracks demonstrate the emotional and sonic range Mauch has developed over the years, especially now as a solo artist.

Though his passion, Spiral Sound isn’t the only musical outlet keeping him busy lately. After 25 years, his former band, regional ’90s electro-pop outfit Channel 69, has reformed and is performing again. Being asked by a Dallas promoter to reunite for a show was a surprise but a welcome one, he said. Far from just serving as a nostalgia act, the reunion has re-ignited the writing relationship Mauch shared with singer John Allen.

Channel 69 is also about to release the second of a pair of singles. The finishing touches are being finalized on “Not a Love Song,” the follow-up to summer’s “Another Gotcha.” The tunes serve as the first material the band has written in almost three decades.

Reinhausen Manufacturing, a world leader the Electrical Power Engineering industry has 1 opening for a Transformer Field Service Technician in the Charlotte, NC area. This position will be based in the Charlotte, NC area but may require training in our manufacturing facility in Humboldt, TN for several weeks depending on the candidates’ experience. The technician will be responsible for servicing our transformers for our clients located primarily throughout the US. Some of our transformer clients are located in Canada, Mexico and Europe.

The Transformer Field Service Technician is responsible for preparing equipment and job sites, as well as performing basic installation, maintenance, trouble-shooting, testing & repairs independently.

Additionally, this position will assist the Transformer Field Service Team during service activities / functions – such as installation, maintenance, trouble-shooting, testing & repairs.

Essential Functions: • Close collaboration with and technical support of the Transformer Field Service Team.
