Rockin’ the River

At Panther Island Pavilion (395 Purcey St, FW, 817-6980700), a weekly summer concert series is held with a fun twist. The stage is right on the Trinity River! The concerts are every Thursday, kicking off on June 16, with The Damn Quails followed

by Joey Green Band. The series finale will be held on Saturday, Aug. 13, with Cooder Graw. Parking and admission are completely free. You will need money only for beer and soda, frozen drinks, food, merch, and tube rentals. Of course, that’s all optional. Bring a chair or a blanket and enjoy the tunes and the sunshine. Some of the other artists slated to perform include Dolly Shine (July 14), Zane Williams (July 28), and the Dirty River Boys (August 11). Be sure to stay after the concert for the extravagant fireworks show!

Beat the heat with some artful, cultural treats this summer.

The first comprehensive U.S. exhibition of its kind since a 1987 show at The Museum of Modern Art, Frank Stella: A Retrospective hangs now at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St, 817-738-9215) through Sun, Sep 18. Presented by the Modern and the Whitney Museum of American Art, this collection of about 100 works covers Stella’s entire career, from the mid-1950s to today. Some of the paintings, reliefs, maquettes, sculptures, and drawings are well known and have been drawn from collections all over the world, while many others are rarely seen. “A Stella retrospective presents many challenges,” said Modern curator Michael Auping, “given Frank’s need from the beginning of his career to immediately and continually make new work in response to previous series. Greasy soul-rockers the Quaker City Night Hawks are going to be making a national push soon, so catch ’em before they blow up. Written by Frederick Knott (Dial M for Murder, Write Me a Murder), the 1966 drama has recently been re-adapted for the stage by Jeffrey Hatcher (Never Gonna Dance, Three Viewings, The Turn of the Screw) and will premiere in Fort Worth at Stage West (821/823 W Vickery Blvd, 817784-9378) on Thu, May 26. Whether you’re hosting a party or just need to cool off, these thirstquenching drinks will make any occasion a par-tay!

The Blueberry Rum Smash What you need: Fresh blueberries 1 tablespoon brown sugar 3/4 ounce fresh-squeezed lemon juice 2 ounces rum Ginger ale Muddle it: Cover the bottom of your glass with blueberries.

Add brown sugar and lemon juice and muddle until the sugar is melted. Do not mash the berries into a pulp just break the skins. Fill the glass with crushed ice and then add the rum. Top with ginger ale and stir.

Island Passion Cocktail What you need: 2 ounces Captain Morgan rum 3 ounces ginger beer ½ diced passion fruit Shake it: Combine all ingredients in a mixing glass. Add ice, shake vigorously. Strain into a glass over fresh ice.

Muddle it: Muddle the lime juice, mint, and sugar together in the glass until the leaves bruise lightly and the flavors release. Add ice until glass is about 3/4 full and then pour in rum and green tea.
