The Performers The reigning kings of creepy, atmospheric, synth-based doom finally get the indie label promotional heft they deserve, and good thing. Pinkish Black’s latest album, Bottom of the Morning, is the clearest distillation of their artistic vision. The duo’s music boils down to horror movie soundtracks made by a goth-leaning Air Supply fan and powered by the crushing rhythms of a heavy metal veteran –– created to capture your attention with melody and pummel your brain with relentless heaviness.

Though Artist of the Year nominee Reagan James created an enormous fanbase via her long run on NBC’s The Voice, the 17-year-old chanteuse is earning serious street cred with her original material and rigorous touring schedule.

On the Vocalist Performance-nominated track “7,” the sultry singer conjures up a red, hot, and blue mood.

Area rock band Oil Boom recently opened road shows for Social Distortion, put out a video, and added a fourth member, guitarist Jordan Richardson (Son of Stan). Along with two versions of a song about Chili’s, the guys have recorded the bulk of their second full-length, due for a fall release. The Oily Booms also have been woodshedding their social media chops.

Tame … Tame and Quiet is back and better than ever. Almost a decade ago, frontman Aaron Bartz and company were among the brightest lights in North Texas’ indie-rock scene. TTxQ 2.0’s brainy, angular guitar attack has only gotten more inventive and even a little heavier, now that the lineup includes a bass player.

Equal parts funk, R&B, rock, and disco, Ronnie Heart’s music is bound to get the party started. Onstage, the diminutive sex symbol channels everyone from Prince to Beck to the helmeted dudes from Daft Punk. His longawaited debut album, You(r) Mine, has collected nominations for Album of the Year, Song of the Year (“Smoovie”), and Pop Artist.

After traveling to New Zealand to try to place one of his songs onto the soundtrack for the last Lord of the Rings movie, veteran singer-songwriter Daniel Katsuk returned to put the finishing touches on his namesake band’s longawaited new album. Labyrinth will be out in July.

A blues guitar prodigy since he was 7-years-old, Matt Tedder wowed the world with his vocal talent on NBC’s The Voice. Now 20, the Burleson native has recruited an all-star cast of sidemen to back him on stages near and far and is set to release his debut EP this summer.

Perennial Music Awards winners Holy Moly have been gigging constantly throughout Texas and have begun work on their sixth studio album, the follow-up to 2013’s award-winning Brothers’ Keepers. Beer is still very popular among the band members.

In addition planning their first video, tasteful indie-rockers Gollay are also about to release new material. Last year, their debut recording, Built for Love, was voted Album of the Year.

Vodeo’s self-titled EP is a fantastic voyage of melodic babymaking dance rock that somehow manages to sound futuristic, even as it leans on impeccable classic-rock chops.

These relative newcomers are simultaneously funky, sexy, and interstellar. If you could put a discotheque on the Moon, Vodeo would be the house band.

The buzz about Vincent Neil Emerson is real. After all, he’s recording his new album at Niles City Sound, the same place where Leon Bridges began his meteoric rise. On Emerson’s Album of the Year nominated East Texas Blues (Dreamy Life Records), he digs into the darkness, churning up heartwrenching, gritty tunage that calls to mind Steve Earle and John Prine.

Oh Whitney’s latest recording, an eponymous EP, was recorded and produced by Steely Dan frontman Donald Fagan, and it possesses the same slick, bubbly grooviness that Fagen popularized back in the day, replete with several scorching guitar solos and tons of colorful melodies.

One of the best bands in town finally seems to be getting its due. Crewed by four of the most creative musicians around, The Hendersons span the divide between catchy pop and psychedelic rock with a bridge built on irresistible melodic hooks. Their new album was produced in Chicago by a living legend and should be out this fall.

Specializing in Texa-Cali tunes (a little soul, a little rock, a lot of heart), Hightower is the vehicle for singersongwriter Lindsay Hightower. From a debut show in March 2015, the quintet greeted March 2016 with a debut album. Inspired by Olivia Laing’s Trip to Echo Spring, Echo Spring is an exploration of common themes among Hemingway, Fitzgerald, and Tennessee Williams, framed by delicious melodies and tasty grooves.

After releasing a new, eponymous album on Idol Records, Missing Sibling toured Texas, the Midwest, and California and has more West Coast shows this fall. The retro-rockers in the spirit of The Lemonheads and Better than Ezra also continue churning out awesome homemade videos.

The brainchild of veteran singer-songwriter Sean Russell, the pop-rocking Cut Throat Finches have had a busy year: signing with Hand Drawn Records; putting out a debut album, Reality; releasing a virtual-reality video for the song “Boundaries,” the only video of its kind in the world; and now touring the Midwest through the fall.

Ryan Tharp is a musical lifer, and that devotion to songwriting shows in tunes that are equal parts lovelorn ruminations on life and gritty, bluesy guitar rockers. It’s Texas Music for people who don’t like Texas Music, played by a musician who cut his teeth shredding as a sideman in various Americana, rock, and metal projects for over a decade.

Sally Majestic has been laying down the party soundtrack for the past 15 years, and the veteran rockers show no signs of coasting to a stop. If their recent album, Rate of Exchange, is any indication, fans will be showing up in droves to get down with Sally’s blend of reggae, ska, rock, and jazz for years to come.

Poppy yet melancholy, bright yet mournful, Shadows of Jets’ tuneage is always sumptuous and smart. The vehicle for singer-songwriter and producer Taylor Tatsch (Maren Morris, Un Chien, Little Black Dress), SoJ recently released Grow, a nominee for EP of the Year, the band’s second recording, the first being a self-titled debut album from 2013.

It’s obvious that Huffer has heard of Sabbath, but bits of late’90s emo and desert-rock are ever-present in the trio’s self-titled debut EP. The band’s melancholy sound leaks sludgy, dirge-y, supersonic heaviness with syrupy vocal melodies.

On his Album of the Year-nominated Life Ain’t Hard, Luke McGalthery is showing the world that he’s more than just a highly sought-after sideman. His twangy blend of bluegrass, throwback C&W, and zydeco set the backdrop for the doe-eyed troubadour’s tales of loneliness and drinking troubles away.

From the remains of the short-lived ill smiths came this New Artist nominee. Though having played only a couple dozen shows and done only minimal recording under the new moniker VVoes (pronounced woes), frontman Elijah Wichryk and company comprise one of the buzziest bands in town, whose single, the Dark Wave-y “Days Are Numbered,” got some love on The Local Ticket.

After The Vandoliers’ incredible 2015 debut, Ameri-Kinda, frontman Joshua Fleming and the boys (featuring members of the Whiskey Folk Ramblers, The O’s, Vinyl, and Armadillo Creek) attacked local stages with the kind of relentlessness that would make Hank and Willie proud.

Longshots co-frontman Joey Gorman has a new project. Instead of gritty, greasy, punkish riffs and howls, Joe Gorgeous offers clean, solid, crisp, polished, rocking sonics modeled after The Pixies in a pleasant mood or The Cars after a Ramones concert.

Joe Gorg’s debut recording, the EP The Ugly Truth, was recorded in Nashville with members of the Kopecky Family Band.

The Phantom Sensation went from open-mic night darlings to legit touring band almost overnight. The quintet’s high-energy brand of Dust Bowl-era bluegrass/folk harks back to grittier times without falling into cliché. The brother-and-sister-fronted outfit plans to release its first full-length album next month.

After getting a social media shout-out from Fort Worthlegend-in-the-making Leon Bridges, Lyric Le’Velle planted himself firmly on the list of North Texas hip-hop acts to watch. In the 20-year-old’s rapid-fire flow, he employs inter-line rhymes and other verbal gymnastics to push and pull the tempo like a rapper decades older.

If country music can be saved, it will be because acts like the Joe Savage Band are bringing back traditionalism. The namesake frontman pivots among Johnny Cash-style gothic country, ballroom shuffles, and heartbreaking balladry. The band’s debut album, Songs Worth Singing, is a 12-track collection of rowdy, clever tunes that will restore your faith in C&W.

The spacey grooves and processed vocals from the Fairmount electro-duo Starbass Laboratories might make you think of an arcade game that’s gained sentience and became obsessed with Krautrock.

TCU grad Lou Charle$ dishes out hands-in-the-air partystarting anthems with infectious grooves and catchy hooks.

But don’t write off the R&B/Hip-Hop nominee as just kegstand music. The Egyptian-born rapper puts his college degree to use by writing bookish lyrics –– but never at the expense of getting butts moving.

Electronic music doesn’t begin to describe what Ricky Wayne Kinney’s project is all about. Take one part krautrock, add some pre-emotional Beck, and sprinkle some illbient glitch on top, and consider the surface barely scratched. Whatever you call it, Squanto’s material is powerful

“Post-rock” and “post-punk” are both applicable descriptions for Bulls, but so is “urgent.” The trio’s loud, anxious guitar jams and shouted lyrics attack the listener all at once, giving him the impression that Bulls don’t like wasting time when it comes to giving their audiences an intense live experience.

Siberian Traps’ brand of Americana is a mélange of heartfelt lyricism and giddy, sticky hooks anchored by an unbeatable rhythm team. But don’t call ’em country. There’s a definite undercurrent of mid-’80s college rock that makes the Traps’ tasteful application of reverb ’n’ twang sound fresh.

Known for its energetic, mesmerizing live shows, the Fort Worth psych-rock quintet Jetta in the Ghost Tree has amassed one of the most dedicated followings in town, and for good reason. Frontman Brandin Lea has the uncanny knack for writing songs with huge hooks and dark undertones.

Feletha Black lives in the shared space between pure, uncut, throwback R&B, neo soul, and bow-chicka-wow-wow bedroom funk. Vocalist Lauren Mosely belts out earworms over tight rhythms, silky guitars and keys, and a horn section that compels rumps to get bumping. Imagine if Erykah Badu and a young Curtis Mayfield were trying to talk you into a threesome, and you’ve pretty much captured the essence of this sevenpiece Blues/Soul nominee.

Caliche Burnout’s species of loud, locomotive, twangy rawk makes your liver hurt just listening to it. Beneath the crunch of the guitars and growling vocals is a spine of wit and a raucous playfulness that simply demands another shot and a beer.

Composed of scene veterans, Caliche Burnout may represent a nadir for all of them.

Fort Worth’s “King of Song Style,” Kevin Aldridge spent the past year shifting his focus from the standard album model to recording and releasing singles as soon as they were mastered. The first, “Winner Leaves Town,” earned the veteran singer-songwriter a nomination for Rock Song of the Year.

Were there a category Band Most Likely to Trigger a Nervous Breakdown During a Three-Minute Song, Mean Motor Scooter would have the award locked up. The garage-punk trio may be new-ish to the scene but has already made a name for itself thanks to an exhausting, exhilarating, high-energy live show.

The Live Band category is a tough one to calculate, but there’s no way Animal Spirit couldn’t be nominated. The four piece’s tight vocal harmonies, psychedelic guitar riffs, and tribal rhythm section come together for a compelling, exotic experience in person.

Shades of Monster Magnet, Queens of the Stone Age, and Fort Worth’s own Toadies are all evident in Duell’s bombastic tuneage. With members from all over North Texas, including the Fort, the quartet doesn’t play often but always plays loud.

Ex-Stella Rose frontman Stephen Beatty’s psych-rock outfit Un Chien processes a host of ’90s-indie rock influences through a thoroughly modern filter, resulting in a listening experience that’s fuzzed-out and hazy, the kind of psychedelic sonics in which the line between dreamscapes and waking life are distorted.
