Ways to Give Back this

–– A Christmas Carol The Holidays are a time for tradition: the cousins playing a game of touch football in the front yard, midnight mass, The Nutcracker. Why not create a tradition of giving?

Fort Worth has dozens of groups that could use our help. The Tarrant Area Food Bank accepts donations of nonperishable items and money every day of the year. In 2015, the food bank was able to provide access to 23.6 million nutritious meals. Every dollar equals five meals for hungry children, families, and seniors. For us Weeklyites, every time we go grocery shopping, we also buy $5 worth of additional items to put into a “Food Bank Box” that we’ve made and decorated. At the end of every month, we drop off the box at food bank headquarters, 2525 Cullen St, Fort Worth, 76107. For more information or to sign up to volunteer, visit tafb.org or call 817-857-7100.

The Presbyterian Night Shelter also is always accepting donations to help combat homelessness in Fort Worth. Donations of gently used clothing, household items, toys, toiletries, and furniture may be dropped off between 9am and 7pm at 2400 Cypress St, Fort Worth, 76102, two blocks south of East Lancaster, the last building on the right. In-kind donation tax forms are also available. (Only donations that are in great need or are bulk are considered for pickup.) Volunteer opportunities are also available. From serving dinner to teaching life skills, you can help the Presbyterian Night Shelter “guide the journey from homeless to home for Fort Worth’s homeless community.” For more information, visit 817-632-7400.

For us Weeklyites, we go through all of our belongings –– including our kids’ toys –– at the end of every season to contribute to our “Night Shelter Box.” Maybe that’s something your family could do, too. Or even your office.

Setting up a competitive but friendly toy/clothing drive is as easy as giving every department a large box to fill and a deadline.

Some other Fort Worth nonprofits that would love your help and donations include: the women and children shelter SafeHaven of Tarrant County (817-502-7168, hotline: 877-701-7233, Safehaventc.org), whose immediate needs include women’s and kids’ clothes, toiletries, and childcare items; Samaritan House (929 Hemphill St, 817-332-6410, Samaritanhouse.org), whose immediate needs include furniture (beds, dressers, sofas, chairs, and dining room furniture); World Relief Fort Worth (4059 Bryan Av, 817-924-0748, Worldrelieffortworth.org), whose immediate needs include sofas and soft chairs, dining room-type tables and chairs, dressers/drawers, and coffee tables/end tables; the Northside Inter-Community Agency (1600 Circle Park Blvd, 817-626-1102, Nicaagency.org), whose immediate needs include gently used furniture for home and office; and the Salvation Army (multiple locations, Salvationarmydfw.org), whose immediate needs include any items that can be resold to help with the group’s voluntary substance abuse program.

Preparations In a cocktail shaker, add the bourbon, mint, lemon, and ginger. Muddle until the pieces break down before adding ice and shaking the whole thing like a Polaroid picture for 30 seconds. Strain into coupe glasses. Top with ginger beer, garnish with some cranberries.

Pumpkin Pie Martini

Preparations Dump all the liquids into an ice-filled shaker.

Shake that bad boy before straining the contents into a large martini glass rimmed with the crushed graham crackers. Garnish with the cinnamon stick.

Cocoa Raspberry Heaven

Preparations Pour the raspberry liqueur and white crème de cacao into a cappuccino mug before adding the hot chocolate and stirring. Top with some of that delish whipped cream, upon which you can drizzle a teaspoon of the raspberry liqueur.

Top it all off with a fresh raspberry.

2 ounces bourbon 2 springs of fresh mint 1/2 lemon, cut into discs 2-inch piece freshly-skinned ginger, cut into small pieces 1 bottle ginger beer some ice

1/2 oz. vanilla vodka 1 oz. pumpkin spice liqueur 1/2 oz. Kahlua 1/2 oz. Butterscotch Schnapps 1/2 oz. half-and-half some crushed graham crackers 1 cinnamon stick
