Berenice Abbott (1898–1991) Manhattan Bridge Looking Up, 1936

Berenice Abbott, Margaret Bourke-White, and Walker Evans were three pioneering photographers from the 1930s whose work is the subject of American Modern: Abbott, Evans, Bourke-White, hanging through January 2, 2011 at the Amon Carter Museum of American Art (3501 Camp Bowie Blvd.).

A magical metropolis is the site of flights of fantasy (and dazzling acrobatics) in Cirque Dreams Illumination, an extravaganza set to an original score of jazz, ballroom, pop, and more that will be playing at Bass Performance Hall (525 Commerce St.) from Tue., Nov. 30, through Sun., Dec. 5.

Through January 2, 2011, at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth (3200 Darnell St.), catch Fort Worth artist Vernon Fisher’s K-Mart Conceptualism, a concise career retrospective spanning nearly 40 years. Fisher’s postmodernist sculptures, text pieces, and photorealist paintings interrogate the bloody crossroads between high art and popular culture. K-Mart Conceptualism is the first Modern survey devoted entirely to a local artist.

Fiery Pool: The Maya and the Mythic Sea is a collection of more than 90 pieces, most recently excavated and never before seen in the United States, documenting the relationship between the Maya and water. Fiery Pool will be on display at the Kimbell Art Museum (3333 Camp Bowie Blvd.) through January 2, 2011.

On Wed., Dec. 8, and Thu., Dec. 9, at the Will Rogers Memorial Center (3301 W. Lancaster Ave.), Ballet Concerto will perform The Christmas Grump, an original holiday ballet based on How the Grinch Stole Christmas. Swingin’ into the Holidays, a ballet performed to familiar Christmas tunes, is also on tap, along with O Holy Night, a balletic reenactment of the Nativity.

From Fri., Nov. 26, through Thu., Dec. 23, at Casa Mañana Theatre (3101 W. Lancaster Ave.), the beloved stop-motion television classic Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer will come to life. Casa’s production will feature Rudolph, Hermey the Elf, the Abominable Snow Monster, Yukon Cornelius, the misfit toys, and every other lovable character, including that jolly fat guy in the red suit.
