Welcome to local music Christmas, better known as the 16th Annual Music Awards Festival.

This year’s version will be two days in two different parts of town. Day 1 will be 5-10pm Saturday, June 24, in the West 7th area, and Day 2 will be 5-10pm Sunday, June 26, in the Near Southside. The festival is free, but we would appreciate it if you’d drop $5 to purchase a digital download of our annual compilation album, Frequencies Vol. 8, featuring some of the best up-and-coming bands the 817 has to offer. Sales of the album will benefit the United Way of Tarrant County. Thanks to everyone who supports our town’s great local music scene all year round. – Eric Griffey

The

performers Kevin Aldridge & The Appraisers Self-deprecating, introspective, and often times painfully honest, Kevin Aldridge is a songwriter’s songwriter, but that doesn’t mean his songs are all lyrics and no rock – after all, his all-time favorite bands include the Heartbreakers, the Jayhawks, and AC/DC. He’s never shied away from a power chord or electrifying guitar lead.

Big Cliff Big Cliff, a.k.a. Cliff, is a wizard of bars, killing freestyle raps like a kung fu warrior wiping out a circle of foes. A pillar of Fort Worth’s hip-hop scene for years, Cliff spits fire like a burning building.

BULLS BULLS’ urgent post-rock is loud, anxious, and up-front, built on a skeleton of frantic guitar jams and a shouted lyrical assault. Each performance is intense and designed for maximum impact, blasting your brain with relentless, pummeling rhythms and sonic textures that shriek like angry ghosts.

Cut Throat Finches Blending Americana traditions with fiery gospel influences and soul-stirring rock and roll, Cut Throat Finches have a big sound that’s as catchy as it is uplifting, aiming for epic sonic journeys that stick in your brain long after the chords have rang out.

Dead Vinyl Falling in the space between early Led Zeppelin and The Stooges’“Search and Destroy,” Dead Vinyl channels the dangerous parts of classic rock and puts them in a 21st-century context, stretching blistering vintage riffage over a frame of contemporary angst, charging rhythms, and soulful vocals.

Summer Dean Put simply, Summer Dean’s voice is gorgeous, the dusky timbre of an old soul, reminiscent of country legends like Loretta Lynn and Gillian Welch, perfectly suited for conveying her raw, emotional storytelling.

Feletha Black The good folks in Feletha Black bring the party with their funky take on R&B and soul, and they’re tighter than the insides of a Rolex designed by late greats like Curtis Mayfield and the Purple One Himself. Singer Lauren Mosley’s brassy vocals grab a hold of your heart and show it a good time, and her backing band’s tasty grooves are sure to shake loose even the stiffest hips.

FOGG FOGG may have outgrown the Sabbath-influenced roots that made them immensely popular in the stoner rock scene, but they are still masters of the massive riff. Nowadays, their quest to find the “heavy” draws from Hendrix and the Grateful Dead, filtering those influences through their own spectrum of psychedelic rock.

Gollay Rachel Gollay’s literary lyrics and beautiful voice are perfect for when you need to make sense of life’s various turns. Her multi-textured indie pop offers new details to treasure with every listen, and her turns of phrase make you anticipate the wit waiting for you in the next verse.

Henry the Archer Henry the Archer’s sound is aptly described as “indie,” but that’s because it’s difficult to pigeonhole – there’s reverb, but there’s also a little reggae, plus piano pop and proggy arrangements. But no matter what you call it, frontman Richard Hennessey’s voice is what makes his songs soar.

Holy Moly After a decade or so, the kings of Fort Worth cowpunk may have gotten older and wiser, but that doesn’t mean they’re any less rowdy when the hit the stage. Whether they’re belting out foot-stomping rockers about mustaches, drugs, and werewolves or going deep with countrified versions of Primus songs, Holy Moly is always a good time.

Huffer Blending hard-rock guitar heroics with a haze of shoegaze, a garage rock ethos, and plenty of beer, Huffer puts on an electrifying show full of high-volume, anthemic rock and roll. If it looks like they’re having a party onstage, it’s because they are.

I Happy Am Describing their project as “fuzz folk” and citing influences ranging from the Moody Blues to Beavis and Butthead, Rebekah Elizabeth and Zach Zanetich make pop music with a deadpan sense of humor. It’s like they’re writing lullabies designed to keep kids lying awake at night.

Reagan James The power of Reagan James’ voice is undeniable – it’s one reason she found herself competing on NBC’s The Voice before she was old enough to drive a car. But she’s also got a knack for making sultry pop with an R&B flair that fits comfortably with the mainstream pop landscape but remains wholly original.

Katsük Daniel Katsük is one of the most prolific songwriters around, with a storied career built on a song catalog that’s as long as his influences are broad. His music draws from rock, reggae, folk, and Middle Eastern traditions, as well as his own travels, a positive spirit, and love for his fellow humans. Katsük’s globally inspired sound will put a smile on your face and lift up your soul.

Krum You could call it a comeback, but Krum, formerly known as Playdough, would probably rather you call it redemption.

Krum’s most recent album, Bare Knuckle Gospel, is both a nod to old-school hip-hop and the power of the Holy Spirit, though for him, the struggle is indeed real for the gritty stories he tells.

Lion Eye Lion Eye’s dubby, irie vibrations make for a reggae sound that pulls from both Jamaican and West Coast influences, putting on live show that’s heavy on smoky grooves and positive energy.

Lindby Quirky, funny, and musically precise, Lindby wrap an offkilter sense of humor in sweet indie-rock melodies and crafty pop hooks, hidden under an eclectic musical pedigree that’s built on jazz, world-beat, and flights of experimental fancy. Sometimes they even play Christmas music, too!.

Ginny Mac Ginny Mac’s mastery of Western Swing is borne on her angelic voice and fleet-fingered alacrity at the accordion –– while she certainly pays her respects to Bob Wills, her stage presence and songcraft make her an original in her own right.

Brandon Marcel Swimming in similarly moody, stylistic waters as his hero Frank Ocean, Brandon Marcel makes sexy, introspective R&B that’s uncompromising in its emotional reality – he’s as likely to call himself out as he is a jilted lover – as well as its devotion to hooking you in with the honey dripping from his voice.

Luke McGlathery Luke McGlathery can probably play any instrument, and he can probably play just about any genre, though he gravitates toward a sound that blends Western Swing with a skatepunk’s aversion to giving a shit. His take on American roots music is funny and real.

Mean Motor Scooter With the addition of I Happy Am’s Rebekah Elizabeth on organ, Mean Motor Scooter is technically no longer a “power trio” – they just pack an even bigger garage-rock punch, knocking you out with surf rock-influenced bangers and pile-driving post-punk jams.

Panic Volcanic They may not be a metal band, but Panic Volcanic is as heavy as an iron hammer, which is even more impressive given that the three-piece doesn’t even bother with guitar, relying instead on thundering drums, high-gain bass, and powerfully uncompromising vocals for an explosive hard-rock sound.

Andy Pickett Andy Pickett’s mellow piano balladry delivers meandering ruminations on neighborhood characters which blend a sketch artist’s eye with a Randy Newman-esque ear for songcraft. His wry observations about late-night hijinks and the wackos who perpetrate them are as hooky as they are spot-on.

Picnic Lightning Picnic Lightning make atmospheric punk that’s both cerebral and visceral – their music is alternately distorted and shimmering, the way you might feel while getting lit in the desert with your friends, drunk and rowdy because you want the coyotes and rattlesnakes to hear you.

Pinkish Black If the apocalyptic future scenes of Terminator were made into a horror movie scored by John Carpenter, then you’d capture the essence of Pinkish Black’s dark, heavy, synth-driven doom. Amid the duo’s dramatic sonics, there’s an underlying pop influence that actually nods to Karen Carpenter –– made by a goth-y Air Supply fan and a progrock drummer with an encyclopedic knowledge of heavy metal.

Programme An instrumental vehicle for the musical prowess of Nathan Brown, Landon Cabarubio, and Ben Hance, Programme sounds like the score of a comedic action show that might have aired on CBS in the mid-’80s – either that or Top Gun if Don Simpson had made it about helicopters instead of fighter jets and cast Gerald McRaney instead of Tom Cruise.

Alex Rhea Chanteuse Alex Rhea walks the line between jazz and western swing, though you might get the impression that she is equally comfortable with classic R&B. No matter how you peg her songs, she will captivate you with her voice.

Royal Sons Royal Sons hit the stage like fire flung from a catapult, all howling vocals and incendiary riffs. Singer Blake Parish brings swagger of the late, great Hanna Barbarians to bear ahead of members of In Memory of Man, resulting in a hard rock outfit that’s the best of both beasts.

Joe Savage From Oregon to Spain and back down to Texas, it seems like Joe Savage has been everywhere, and while his baritone might draw comparisons to Johnny Cash, he’s more than just another country singer. Jack Kerouac is as much an influence on his songwriting as Merle Haggard – he’s a poet at heart, no matter what genre he’s working in.

Squanto Nobody challenges your ears quite like Squanto, the oneman electronic alter-ego of video artist Rickey Kinney.

Glitchy and unnerving yet crafted around an ear for pop, Squanto’s frantic beats and paranoid samples sound as though a DVD player became self-aware and tried to rid itself of a scuffed-up rom-com stuck in its tray.

Tame … Tame and Quiet About a decade ago, TTxQ hit the scene like a whirlwind, their temperamental atmospherics built on the sturm and drang of chiming soundscapes and angular, knotty guitar attacks only to subside into an indefinite hiatus. Two years ago, they returned with a new, heavier lineup filled out with a bass player, making their brand of brainy post-punk hit harder than ever.

The Me-Thinks With their towering amps, sizzling riffage, and capes billowing beneath a haze of smoke-machine clouds and weed smoke, the Me-Thinks are practically legends, blasting fuzzed-out tales of bong-ripped substitute teachers and volume-ripped eardrums from the heavy metal parking lots of yore.

Son of Stan Son of Stan started out in 2012 as a solo project for producer Jordan Richardson, but over the past few years, the live-band iteration has become of North Texas’ most entertaining shows, melding the vibe of ’80s hit-making machines like Phil Collins and Huey Lewis with guitar rock inspiration taken from Kenny Loggins and ZZ Top.

Un Chien Inspired in part by the bluesy psychedelia lurking within the Brian Jonestown compound and the ethereal drone of the Black Angels, Un Chien’s brooding, fuzzed-out dreamscapes are simultaneously moody and thrilling yet never shying away from memorable hooks

The Unlikely Candidates After surviving the grind of major-label shenanigans and switcheroos, The Unlikely Candidates are stronger than ever, packing clubs all over the country with their blend of pop and rock and the inescapable energy of their live show. Don’t miss ’em, because they might not be back from the road for a while.

Vodeo Vodeo’s brand of sexy, spacey dance rock is a mix of smooth swagger and get-loose booty shakin’ party pop, like yacht rock pumped up to pack out Studio 54 or Le Freak taking over Kenny Loggins’ soundtracks.

War Party What started out as a punked-up joke on doo-wop ideas – “don’t wop,” in the band’s parlance – has evolved into a sound that has as much to do with Pulp as it does with The Clash. Yet their name does have the word “party” in it, and that element remains no matter what kind of music they’re making.

Whiskey Folk Ramblers Crewed by some new members and with a bunch of new songs, Whiskey Folk is back to taking over stages with their klezmer-influenced country ballads and foot-stomping anthems, as well as thoughtful meditations on getting your soul back from the Devil because he didn’t hold up his end of the bargain. Wrex Ambitious and introspective, Wrex’s continuous stylistic reinvention is an outgrowth of trying to better understand himself, most recently in Chakra Flow, the seven-song EP he released this spring that explores the seven body chakras. That might sound weird, but Wrex’s flow manages to make the esoteric accessible, not to mention fun bump in the car.
