Over the past few weeks, a number of judges and mayors throughout the state have issued orders saying that businesses can be held responsible for customers who won’t wear masks during the pandemic.

There’s no question that masks help prevent the spread of the coronavirus, but these orders unfairly put owners in the position of policing their customers while trying to reopen and rebuild their businesses. The orders also underscore the urgent need for state and federal legislation that protects employers from lawsuits that try to exploit the pandemic for financial gain.

Small business owners across Texas were already worried about becoming the target of greedy trial lawyers to get rich quick on a fast settlement. When my association, the National Federation of In-

One recent afternoon, a few dozen people gathered on the south side of East Exchange Avenue to watch several cattle languidly walk to their dusty pens near the Cowtown Coliseum. Known as the Fort Worth Herd, the miniature cattle drive has been a staple attraction of the Stockyards for more than 20 years. Over those two decades, individual restaurants and bars have come and gone, but the landscape of the historic district has remained largely unchanged –– until recently.

Nearby, the once unused horse and mule barns that formed Mule Alley have been gutted, refurbished, and finished out to house more than a dozen spaces for retail, dining, drinks, and offices as part of a partnership between Majestic Realty Co. and Fort Worth’s Hickman Investments.

After years of planning and construction, much of the massive development project is now open or opening soon. Texas-based

Public perception about the project has changed since early 2016, when news of California-based Majestic Realty’s role in revitalizing the historic Stockyards was met with skepticism by many Fort Worthians (“To Save the Stockyards’ Living History,” January 2016). At the urging of preservationists, local business owners, and concerned locals, Fort Worth city councilmembers voted to create a historic district that April. The district put safeguards in place that prevented demolitions and set the groundwork for the construction that followed.

Designing the look and feel of Mule Alley fell on Linda Berman, Majestic Realty’s chief creative officer. When directors with Stockyards Heritage Development Company, the entity that owns and manages Mule Alley, called on Berman to head up the project, she said the opportunity to work in Fort Worth’s Stockyards was “refreshing.”

There was, she said, “something authentic at the base of the project. There was a history that was real. The ethos of the cowboy and cowgirl coming up the Chisholm Trail, those things are very lyrical and, in some ways, cinematic. We saw the beauty and majesty in the horse and mule barns.”

Berman and her team began by putting together a “wish list” of shops, restaurants, and other attractions that would make Mule Alley a destination for tourists and locals. Berman knew Fort Worthians would not tolerate a hokey caricature of Cowtown’s cowboy culture.

“We wanted to bring a group of stores

that had bona fide heritage in the West,” she said. “We thought it was really important that we got to know the market. Who were the great chefs, artisans, and entrepreneurs? If we could convince them that the [Stockyards offered them opportunities], we would be able to honor our surroundings and attract a local audience.”

That’s why NFIB is urging our elected leaders in Austin and Washington, D.C., to take steps to protect small businesses from predatory lawsuits that target them when they’re at their most vulnerable.

We’re asking lawmakers to adopt NFIB’s “Liability Protection Principles.” We believe these principles will allow people to reopen their businesses and put people back to work without fear of costly legal battles that could force them to close their doors for good.

NFIB believes the workers’ compensation system should be the only means employees use to settle claims related to COVID-19. The workers’ comp system is the best way to determine whether someone contracted the coronavirus at work and should be compensated. There’s no reason for lawmakers to create any other mechanism for settling employee claims.

We also believe that businesses should

be protected from liability to customer and other third-party claims unless those customers or outside parties can prove the business knowingly failed to develop or put in place a reasonable plan to reduce the risk of exposure to COVID-19 –– and that the businesses’ failure is the reason they got sick.

Another key provision is that only people who were hospitalized because of the coronavirus should be allowed to sue. Doctors are still learning about COVID-19, but one thing they do know is that it affects different people in different ways. Some people have tested positive but experience few if any symptoms.

We believe the Legislature and Congress should grant businesses immunity from coronavirus-related litigation except in cases of gross negligence that result in hospitalization or death. No claims for emotional injury due to contracting the virus should be permitted.

Finally, we believe that opportunistic trial lawyers should be held accountable for bringing frivolous COVID-19-related lawsuits. We believe sanctions should be

brought against attorneys who bring frivolous COVID-19-related claims and that the plaintiff ’s attorney should be required to pay the defendant’s legal fees.

Even if a frivolous claim is eventually thrown out of court, the legal fees can be enough to put a small business out of business.

Texas’ small businesses were closed for weeks to slow the spread of the coronavirus, and it will be months before business returns to normal. Unless our elected leaders take steps to protect small businesses from unfair and unscrupulous lawsuits, the recovery will take even longer than expected and small businesses may end up closing for good. –– Annie Spilman

Early on, Mule Alley project leaders reached out to Paslay, who also owns Piattello Italian Kitchen and Clay Pigeon.

“We were excited about it from the beginning,” he said. “To be a part of the Stockyards is pretty cool. It’s not often you get to be a part of that kind of history.”

As we chatted inside his restaurant, staffers bustled about, putting the finishing touches on what Paslay describes as an American grille concept that has “Texas’ greatest hits.”

The menu, he added, includes dishes like chicken-fried steak, grilled trout, oysters on the half shell, pimento cheese, smoked meats, and other Texas favorites.

Paslay said he wanted to honor the historic roots of the Stockyards by working with established dishes and traditional cooking techniques. His restaurant will use a wood-fire grill and oven that does not use natural gas or electricity, he said.

Behind Provender Hall, a small crew was working on Sidesaddle Saloon, the wine bar that pays homage to the historic cowgirl and her modern incarnations.

Co-owner Sarah Castillo (the restaurateur behind Taco Heads and Tinie’s Mexican Cuisine) said her years of working in the service industry during the Fort Worth Stock Show & Rodeo taught her that cowboys and cowgirls enjoy a fine glass of wine as much as they do Coors Light. Modern cowgirls, she said, are the hardworking moms and female business owners who share the tireless defiance and resilience of their 19th-century counterparts.

Just south of Sidesaddle Saloon, a sprawling barn with a retractable glass roof will soon be home to Second Rodeo Brewing Company, the brewpub concept of chef/restaurateur Jason Boso. Brewer Justin Meyers, who heads By the Horns Brewing in Mansfield (also owned by Boso), is slated to oversee brewing operations at Second Rodeo. Last year, Meyers said the Stockyards brewery will feature beers and styles that pay tribute to the American breweries that paved the way for the current craft beer movement.

Nearby MB Mercantile & Supply was a treat. The store offers old-timey candies, antique cameras, cookbooks, and a wide range of knickknacks. Berman said she wanted to offer visitors a fun, entertainment-based retail experience that covered a wide range of price points. The hundreds of items found in MB Mercantile & Supply were hand-picked or created specifically for Fort Worth’s customers, she added.

At the southernmost end of Mule Alley is Hotel Drover, which will feature 200 rooms and suites, a signature restaurant, meeting spaces, and a wedding barn starting this October. As I made the rounds of the various businesses in Mule Alley, I asked the employees how many tourists they saw.

Upwards of half of all visitors were from out of state that day, the employees said. I was surprised, given the ongoing economic downturn and bottomed-out tourism industry. Many tourists were visiting Fort Worth for the first time, I was told, by increasingly antsy Americans who are looking for a break and hear that Fort Worth’s Stockyards offers something different from typical U.S. tourist destinations. l

At the Mountain, the Homeless Depot is cleared for development.

he fire had been burning continuously for the last three days, ever since the eviction order had come down. What had started simply as old blankets and wind-torn tent panels smoldering in an old oil barrel was threatening to turn four-alarm. A crowd had grown around the fire, near enough to feel the heat but not so close as to draw the ire of the woman who was feeding the blaze.

An old truck tire landed on the fire pit with a thud, sending ash blowing out across the top of the Mountain in great gray-black plumes. The woman coughed and staggered back. The tire caught, and a burst of poisonoussmelling black smoke billowed three stories high above the camp. Something popped inside the fire, and thin, slate-gray smoke trails arched up. The woman laughed as several butane bottles landed near the feet of the retreating crowd.

“You are crazy,” someone yelled.

they were pushed away from the pyre and down the hill, scattering like ash in the wind.

“A little bit of history was being made here,” Danny had told me earlier that day. He had fought hard to keep

his composure, but the realization that everything that he had worked so hard to build was in ruins was just too much. He blinked away some tears, and, even though a sudden swell of emotion had caused his words to crack

and falter, he continued. “If it had just been allowed to go on a little longer, this thing would have grown.”

To create something that would grow, last, and protect –– that had been the idea when Danny and nearly 120 others had come together to create what would be, for a brief time, the safest, most tranquil homeless camp ever established on East Lancaster Avenue.

Danny helped establish what would eventually be called the “Homeless Depot.”

The Depot itself was a series of large tents grouped tightly around a central pavilion, which housed two plastic folding tables set up under a wide blue tarp. Donations would be dropped off at the Depot, where a team of homeless residents would sort through the clothes, food, or camping gear and quickly disperse the supplies to one of the many storage tents or to the food pantry. Bottled water stayed stacked on the plastic tables, as did boxes of hygiene products and OTC medications.

All day, every day, work was being done at the Depot. Trash bags were filled with food and water and delivered to each of the 90-odd tents on the Mountain. Clothes were collected and taken away to be washed.

Tents and sleeping bags were handed out to whomever was in need provided he worked for it. All that was required was to fill up three bags with trash.

Smoke rises from one of the many fires that were started on move-out day. Embittered and angry, many of the people on the Mountain preferred to burn everything that they couldn’t carry with them, leaving nothing but ashes behind.

Once earned, the tents had been put down in a kind of grid, most facing the same direction, and many had yards marked off by long pieces of wood or cord tied to stakes. Clotheslines were strung.

Flags waved. Upturned water bottles fed small tomato plants that had just begun to take root in soil-filled five-gallon buckets.

When the eviction order came down, it was not from the usual places, not code compliance and not from the Fort Worth police department either. The owner had sold the property, and development was happening. Drones began to survey the site the day the order was issued. Change

came quickly to the Depot after that.

Donations dried up. The system broke down. No one paid for a bed roll with bags of trash. These things were taken now, earned through force.

Rationing was abandoned, and the food pantry was opened, leaving only a few Costco-sized cans of corn rolling around on move-out morning. The Depot had been picked clean. Someone had wanted the five-gallon buckets so desperately that he had dumped them all, littering the Depot pavilion with mounds of dirt and withered tomato plants.

“We mowed our lawns,” Danny said

as he looked away from what was left of the Depot. “Did you know that? That was the first some of us had done that in a long, long time. We got to feel like this was a home, our home. We made it a home, I guess. For a lot of us, this was the first time that we got to feel some dignity, the first time since we became homeless.”

I stayed on the Mountain, at the Depot, until the bitter end, watching people push all their earthly possessions away in bent and rattling shopping carts.

More fires were set. The lines that formed around the black tar vendors put Space Mountain to shame.

“This COVID thing has been a blessing for us at least,” one resident (not pictured) told me.

“It kept the city [government] away from us and let us get going, let this camp turn into something good.”

Kay spent her last homeless night on the Mountain. The morning after this photograph was taken, she left to join a group home. Kay had been on East Lancaster Avenue since 2018.

Danny carries a box of canned food into the Depot’s nonperishable storage tent. Some of the food in this tent will be handed out. Some of it will be cooked over the Depot’s camp stoves and served at the evening meal, often the only hot meal that the homeless on the Mountain will get.

It is a tragedy that modern sentiment regards hope with such irony and disdain. It was not the free and seemingly unending flow of donations into the Depot that made it thrive –– plenty of shelters have more resources and still end up miserable places. The people who lived on the Mountain did not mow their lawns because they had access to lawnmowers but because they were proud of the homes they had made. No one will spend hours in the Texas heat filling up three bags full of trash just to trade it for a tent unless he knows he is buying more than shelter.

He must believe that he is buying a place to stay, a place that could be something like a home.

I stayed until the fires burned out and the surveyor

drones began to buzz like flies around a body. Before Danny left, I asked him what this place, the Depot, had meant to him, and he answered, “Everything. I told God that I would like to be able to give back once I got back on my feet, and he used me to give back while I am, well, while I am still off of my feet. This place, this opportunity, it has meant everything to me. It gave me a chance to help, and I think that I did good.

“By tomorrow we will all just go back to Lancaster, and it will be like none of it ever happened,” Danny said after a moment. “It’s a shame, you know, because this worked. This worked so well.” l

The Mountain, despite the name, is quite flat, and the only shade is provided by a few scrubby stands of stunted live oaks that ring the border of the plateau. This man had worked for hours setting up tents and clearing trash and was near the point of complete exhaustion.

CrossFit Headquarters crosses Black Lives Matter before adding the #MeToo movement to their enemies’ list in a cataclysmic June for the fitness brand.

COVID shutdowns haven’t been kind to the fitness industry. Big box gyms saw memberships freefall as out-of-work and cash-strapped citizens cut unnecessary expenditures to prepare for the unknown.

Independent gyms were in an especially vulnerable spot as small businesses of all shapes and industries peered into their crystal balls to forecast their futures. CrossFit gyms, the trademark branded small-group fitness “boxes” blending weightlifting, gymnastics, and conditioning, worked creatively to try and retain membership. Equipment lending, Zoom-led instruction, and fee reduction became standard practice for smallgym owners attempting to entice their typically loyal membership to keep paying pricier than average dues in the fitness world. Despite their nonessential status, Funkytown’s CrossFit gyms survived and opened their garage doors to eager members with a flurry of new standards and rules in place near the end of May. Coaches and members, elated at their release from captivity, resumed gobbling their Paleo diets with burpees and box jumps (6 feet apart of course) for dessert.

Meanwhile, Greg Glassman –– founder, owner, and CEO of CrossFit –– decided to pin himself between a proverbial dumbbell and the Black Lives Matter movement.

Glassman, who developed the CrossFit trademark and multidiscipline training style responded to an email from the owner of a gym (who are called “affiliates”) who questioned CrossFit’s corporate silence regarding racially charged protests throughout the country and worldwide, in addition to questioning how the brand would address the absence of diversity inside most gyms. The email, though lengthy, elicited a succinct response from

Glassman in which he accused that owner of quarantine-related mental illness, called her evil, and expressed unequivocally that he was ashamed of her.

Glassman’s response, though terse and insensitive, could have stood on its own as simply the health evangelical being an asshole, which many of his former employees have publicly attested wouldn’t surprise them. Instead, he doubled down the next day by responding to a Twitter post from the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation that said racism is a public health issue with, “It’s FLOYD-19,” referring to George Floyd, the Black man killed by a white police officer in Minneapolis last month. Glassman followed up his tweet by accusing health officials of a failed quarantine model to control the virus spread and asserted that in history, quarantines are almost always followed by riots and general distrust.

It doesn’t take a crisis management expert to know these off-the-cuff responses were met with ire by some and anger by many. Prominent athletes in the sport took to their Instagram accounts to malign the CEO and cast doubt on their participation in the CrossFit Games, a yearly competition that has been the subject of numerous documentaries and is broadcast in late July through a contract with ESPN. The gyms came next, far and wide –– CrossFit has more than 15,000 affiliate gyms in more than 150 countries –– with owners trumpeting unequivocally that Glassman’s candid remarks did not represent their gym’s views. In less than 72 hours, nearly 1,500 gyms had vowed to break their affiliation (owners pay $3,000 per year to put CrossFit on their signs) if substantial leadership and culture changes were not made. Reebok –– the Crossfit Games’ title sponsor and seller of licensed apparel for the past 10 years –– broke off contract renegotiations. Rogue Fitness –– provider of all CrossFit Games equipment –– announced they would fulfill their contractual obligation through this year to support the athletes but balked at a continued partnership without major changes. A slew of smaller fitness brands associated with CrossFit have echoed these sentiments.

Glassman –– who has said before when interviewed that the company grew organically and he’s done his best to simply stay out of the way –– has placed his prized creation as well as its affiliates under a sandbag of racial rhetoric. Fort Worth gyms are faced with their own tough decisions. Natalie and Wade Sisk, wife and husband owners and coaches of CrossFit Anthology on University Drive, acknowledged that the training methodology and branding is likely what brought members through their doors the first time. As of now, they’ve decided they will not keep their affiliation and will revert to their previous name sans the trademark brand, No Limit Strength

& Conditioning. CrossFit Westwood on the Near Southside and CrossFit Iron Horse near the Como neighborhood on West Vickery Boulevard also announced via Instagram that they don’t support Glassman’s statements and will leave the brand behind, transitioning to Westwood Athletics and Iron Horse Community Fitness, respectively. Westwood seized the opportunity to host a row-a-thon to support a host of anti-racist organizations. Teams competed to raise funds and to row the farthest distance, and their efforts banked more than $15,000 worth of donations.

The owners of numerous other gyms in Fort Worth told me via phone that they don’t support Glassman’s statements but that one man doesn’t represent the CrossFit community that they build in their gyms every day. These affiliates are waiting to see how leadership changes come to reflect what the community expects of them. With losses of dues and training revenue mounting, CrossFit headquarters announced Glassman would retire as the CEO –– though he retains 100% ownership –– and the director of the CrossFit Games and perhaps the more recognizable face of the brand, Dave Castro, would take his place. This announcement was seen as a meager step among the fitness community, as Glassman’s role as retired is ill-defined and since he still retains sole ownership and therefore control over the company.

This shouldn’t be a comforting thought to owners as, ultimately, what Glassman does affects public perception of the brand and thus the gyms despite them operating completely independently from him and with no corporate oversight.

Castro assuming the head role seemed like big news until the real barbell dropped two days later when former CrossFit HQ employee and private pilot to Glassman, Andy Stumpf, chronicled his reasons for departing the company in 2014. Stumpf, during an episode of his popular podcast

Cleared Hot, described a disturbing environment where sexual harassment from Glassman toward female employees haunted him mightily enough to now speak out on behalf of those affected.

According to Stumpf –– and now others via major media outlets –– Glassman made advances and comments and was a general perverted creeper toward any woman working for CrossFit whom the founder deemed attractive and desirable.

Apologies for Glassman’s racially charged Twitter comments were issued through social media, but the home base is dead silent regarding these accusations despite an article from a notable national news outlet and yet more athletes who were supposed to appear at the nowdelayed CrossFit Games who have declined their invitations to boycott the corporate culture. CrossFit, who is famously litigious, utilizes non-disclosure agreements for many departing employees to receive severance packages. Stumpf, despite a financial incentive, declined to sign such an agreement when departing six years ago. Glassman’s former pilot also acknowledged that he would likely be pursued legally by Glassman and threatened to publicize specific examples and identities to support his generalized characterizations should the founder’s lawyers attack. Several days after his podcast, Stumpf took to his Instagram account to report he was receiving threats of character assassination directly from Glassman’s personal cell phone. The fall of the founder of CrossFit is an ongoing saga, and more is likely to be revealed.

That said, it’s clear that toxic leadership have left local former and current affiliates in a pinch between abandoning a wellknown brand identity and explaining that the name on their signs doesn’t reflect the culture they’ve worked tirelessly to build as independent owners in their Funkytown boxes. l

Helmed by the chief Taco Head, this new SoMa Mexican eatery recreates the Mexico City culinary experience nicely.

The concept was inspired by the mother of co-owner Sarah Castillo, of Taco Heads fame. Her mom’s name was Christina, but her nickname was pronounced Thee-nee, which translated to “Tinie” when naming the restaurant. Growing up, “Tinie” cooked dinner every night, and Castillo’s family sat down and ate as a household, where they dined for hours. She wanted to bring that family-style experience to Tinie’s, where Castillo encourages guests to “dig in.”

Displayed aside green cabbage and diced radishes, the juicy Mexican rotisserie chicken is served whole. Its exterior was slightly crisp, encompassing warm, savory meat. Whether dark or white, my chicken was far from dry. Because I held it down with my hand as I cut the bird into smaller pieces, it was literally finger-lickin’ good.

The tender meat was extremely easy to cut through, but because of the bones, I’d say forget etiquette and just use your hands.

I was expecting a second wood tray to arrive with the achiote roasted pork. It wasn’t until after poking underneath the garnish of one of my other dishes with my knife that I realized there was meat there.

The pork, rubbed with achiote paste, was covered in a layer of mole verde, sprinkled with pepitas, or pumpkin seeds, then topped with four thin radish slices. Pickled red cabbage had been sliced thin and mounded on one side of the pork. It was a uniquely beautiful display. So beautiful, in fact, it disguised the pork completely.

The silky yet earthy texture of the achiote paste complemented the tender meat. The inward pieces of the pork were so soft that they didn’t even need to be chewed. I was more than impressed. I know it’s served family style, but I would have a hard time sharing that again.

Usually at this point, I’d be making some sort of animalistic noise that means I’m getting too full, but I noticed I felt surprisingly well. Unlike Tex-Mex restaurants that mask their protein with cheese and salsa, Tinie’s truly captures the authenticity of Mexican-American cuisine by serving protein and vegetables. All the more room for dessert.

The soft Mexican chocolate brownie was room-temperature, unlike the common skillet or heated brownie. Made with chile de arbol chocolate, subtle spice is said to be throughout, though I tasted none. Before being topped with Mexican vanilla bean ice cream, the brownie was soaked with cajeta style caramel. The caramel is made by heating and caramelizing a pot of goat’s milk and sugar until it reduces to its brown color. Though Mexican twists were put on what would be your traditional brownie sundae, the fact that Mexican vanilla bean ice cream was used over regular vanilla is the only revision my taste buds found to be evident. l

Hao Tran keeps on keeping on during the pandemic, although her days have changed quite a bit. As a high school teacher, she is working from home and relying on webcasting to communicate with students. As co-founder of The Table Market and Culinary Studio, she continues to sell essential grocery items, although customer traffic has slowed.

Hao suggested we Zoom our episode, which we tried with partial success. Hao’s life –– like everyone else’s –– has been impacted by the coronavirus, but she has faced danger and disruption before.

Her father, Ky Dinh Tran, was 38 when he gathered his family –– wife Le Hong Thi Nguyen, son Hoa, and daughters Hanh and Hao –– and fled Saigon in 1975 just before the city fell to a communist regime. Ky was a South Vietnamese Navy captain and successful businessman and feared being sent to a labor camp and losing his children.

Once in Arlington, the former wealthy businessman worked menial labor for low wages. Hao’s mom, a college-educated nurse in South Vietnam, found work only as a house cleaner. Still, the family stayed together, thrived, and lived happy lives.

Hao is remaining strong and positive

during this current crisis and setting a positive example for her children and her students. She’s also helping keep The Table alive by selling tasty products such as gourmet breads, cheeses, oils, meats, and produce to go.

Drummer Madison Winchell III accomplished a rare feat for a local rock ’n’ roller. He played in two bands that went national. That was Winchell slapping the skins from 1990 to 1992 with the Toadies before beginning his stint with Pimpadelic that ended in 2004.

Being a proud Fort Worthian and also something of a hipster-doofus, I would argue that for a good look –– or listen –– at the kind of music Fort Worth is putting out now, you have a few options, a few more than we’ve ever had, actually. Our annual Music Awards compilation CD is one. Whatever Peter Wierenga is working on is another.

Most recently, it’s been a spellbinding compilation CD to benefit local musos in need. Monies from the sale of Mixing Fort Worth will go toward the fund started

by Fort Worth singer-songwriter Rachel Gollay and now managed by Hear Fort Worth, an offshoot of the Fort Worth visitors’ bureau (Visit Fort Worth).

Wierenga said he simply “wanted to help.”

His idea: Assemble a batch of progressive local musicians, spend a day or so tracking them, livestream pretty much every minute of every session, and put out a quality listening product. Ronnie Heart, Vogue Machine, Austin Kroll, Squanto, Summer Job, Ian Jeffery, The Nova Blak, and Wierenga’s band, Pete and the Crying Teeth, all contributed tracks. And they’re all fantastic. Most of them hew toward pop-structured, occasionally hipswishing techno, with lots of sensuous melodies and crisp beats. The rest deny easy categorization but could be said to encompass both “rock” and “roll.”

Wierenga (Siberian Traps, Tornup, Sur Duda, Chillamundo) was wrapping up production on two records when lockdown started. “Everyone I know that is an audio engineer has had a hard time. I fully expected to be working at UPS right now.”

Believing that production work was going to dry up for him at any moment, he wanted to stay busy but busy with “people I either really enjoyed working with in the past or have always wanted to,” he said, “and the tips I got during the mixes would help keep me afloat.”

Wierenga went about the business of scheduling and, eventually, tracking the artists, livestreaming nearly every strum, every pound, every knob twiddle via social media. Every day in the studio took about six hours, not counting the time for breaks in between performances when Wierenga would consult with the artists. Sam Culp mastered the album. It was released today.

“It was a group effort,” Wierenga said, “and I’m proud of how it came together in the end.”

The end result kicks complete ass. I wish I could more eloquently express my enthusiasm, but for the sake of sparing you my poetry, I’m thinking a direct “Buy this CD now!” ought to suffice. Price is only $9.

“I thought of it because I wanted to figure out a way to make it through quarantine,” Wierenga said, “but I found it to be fun and loved working with everyone in the project.”

In many ways, Mixing Fort Worth makes me question exactly where I live.

Former Toadies players rediscover straightforward rock as SolShifter.

They call themselves SolShifter for no other reason than the name looks and sounds cool, and it’s been splashed on marquees at the Lola’s Saloon, The Moon Bar, the Rail Club, the Ridglea Room, and Haltom Theater.

“We played our last show with The Dangits [at The Moon], and it was a great show,” Winchell said. “It was packed.

Huge buzz.”

On March 20, SolShifer was set to make its Dallas debut at Gas Monkey when COVID-19 shuttered the club scene.

“That was going to be our biggest show to date,” Winchell said. “Everything was building up.”

Mooney compared the pandemic shutdown to a “sucker punch.”

The band has continued to rehearse and is ready to nail its return gig on Saturday at the Ridglea Room.

Nowadays, when Winchell picks up his drumsticks, he feels a touch of déjà vu mixed with a splash of high hopes.

“I’ve played in a lot of bands, and this is by far my favorite,” he said. “We would like to do what Pimpadelic and the Toadies have done for Fort Worth. Those were two big bands. I would like to feel three times a charm. SolShifter is that quality of music.” l

“It was perfect chemistry,” Winchell said.

Umbarger, whose abrupt departure from the Toadies mid-tour in 2001 is reportedly what broke up the band, could still hammer the bottom end. The two guitarists melded well. Everyone’s personalities jelled. The sound was warm and full.

“It felt so good,” Mooney said. “We had so much fun playing together.”

The three-piece cover band turned into a five-piece original outfit. A year later, SolShifter has written 15 songs and recorded three. They still perform several Toadies hits from the Rubberneck album (1994) but lean on the new material. Mooney describes the sound as “straightforward rock,” while Winchell calls it “melodic” with power guitars, Marshall amps, lots of feedback, and a “back to the basics” approach.

I had to ask Winchell: Did you think about asking Toadies frontman Todd Lewis as well?

Uh. No. Jennifer Winchell has “an exceptional voice that works with what we’re doing,” her husband/drummer said. “It works with any style of music we play or write. It’s awesome. It’s a perfect band the way it is.”

The Pimpadelic years whisked him away on a wild ride that every rocker dreams about.

“We got a record deal,” Winchell said.

“We toured. It was a whole different style of music, a crazy situation, and a fun time.”

Post-Pimpadelic, he played a short stint with Casey Donahew’s country band before hitting the brakes.

“I was done, dude,” he said with a laugh. “I needed a break to see what I wanted to do. One year leads into another, and you look up, and it’s been 10 years and you haven’t even played.”

During the hiatus, he raised children and married Jennifer Winchell, a gifted singer. In 2018, they formed a cover band with Winchell’s best buddy, guitarist Steve Dzwilewski, and performed as UrbanGypsy at local clubs.

Their setlist included a couple of Toadies songs, and Jennifer made a suggestion — why not invite former Toadies guitarist Charles Mooney III and bassist Lisa Umbarger to sit in at a show and play on the Toadies cuts? Mooney and Umbarger were out of the music scene at the time but agreed and showed up for a rehearsal.

The music and camaraderie flowed.

Air Quality Standard Permit for Concrete Batch Plants Proposed Registration No. 161637L001 Application. Lattimore Materials Corp., has applied to the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) for an Air Quality Standard Permit, Registration No. 161637L001, which would authorize construction of a temporary concrete batch plant located at the southwest corner of the intersection of Intermodal Parkway and Transport Drive, Haslet, Tarrant County, Texas 76052.
