Static At first glance, Fort Worth’s Redistricting Task Force — the 11-member group that is currently drafting redistricting recommendations for Fort Worth City Council — appears to be on the right track. A recent interim report shows that task force members are prioritizing the fair and even distribution of minorities when deciding how to divide Fort Worth into 10 districts (“Dividing Fort Worth,” Dec 2020).

After the task force makes its final recommendations in March, Fort Worth’s current eight districts will be redrawn to allow for two new districts and the election of two new councilmembers in 2023. Locals approved the expansion when they voted for an amendment to the city charter in 2016, and data from the 2020 Census will play a key role in shaping Fort Worth’s new district map.

The use of a city-appointed task force was not the system that city leaders committed to in late 2018, though. Two years ago, the mayor and city council agreed to appoint a charter review task force to determine the steps needed to enable a citizen-led redistricting effort.

Those and other reforms were intended to address public uproar following the heavy-handed arrest of Jacqueline Craig, a Black mother, and her two teenage daughters at the hands of a white Fort Worth police officer in 2016. Fort Worth City Council formed the Race and Culture Task Force to examine social and economic disparities in Fort Worth. Civic leaders and many locals at the time demanded meaningful reforms to prevent further mistreatment of Black, brown, and poor residents at the hands of law enforcement. City leaders saw the Race and Culture Task Force as the best means for delivering those reforms.

A strong economy and steady population growth have meant that median home sale prices in North Texas have increased by Force’s 22 final recommendations adopted by city council in late 2018 was the formation of an independent redistricting commission (IRC). Proponents of IRCs note that the independent groups, which are composed of volunteer residents who meet certain criteria, remove potential conflicts of interest that can arise when councilmembers are allowed to redraw district maps for self-serving purposes.

“Part of the reason for an ‘independent’ commission was to avoid the normal process of incumbents protecting their own seats on the council,” said Bob Ray Sanders, retired columnist for the Star-Telegram and co-chair of the Race and Culture Task Force.

Sanders isn’t the only one voicing concerns over the city’s redistricting plans. Members of the civic-minded group Citizens for Independent Redistricting Fort Worth are raising public awareness of what they say is the city’s backpedaling on its 2018 commitment to pursue an IRC. “The Race and Culture Task Force proposed” the IRC, said Bruce Miller, an active volunteer with Citizens for Independent Redistricting Fort Worth.

The city has “subsequently pushed back against the idea.”

Assistant City Manager Fernando Costa said the Race and Culture Task Force did not recommend an IRC. The Race and Culture Task Force’s recommendation, he said, was for “the appointment of a charter review task force that would study the desirability of amending the city charter for the purpose of creating an independent redistricting commission. The city council subsequently declined to appoint a charter review task force.”

Sanders said his understanding of the task force recommendation, which he co-authored, was clear.

“The task force did recommend an independent redistricting commission,” he said, adding that he agrees with Costa that there was supposed to be an intermediate review process to look into

“After almost 18 months of study, the task force didn’t feel it had all the information needed to make definite, detailed recommendations on some issues, particularly those I understood some councilmembers considered would be ‘dead on arrival,’ ” Sanders said. “Of course, my response to the ‘dead on arrival’ statements was that if the recommendations would be dead, it would be because [city councilmembers] killed it, not because we aborted it.”

Sanders said that when he heard about the current redistricting task force, he was initially under the impression that the appointed group was honoring the Race and Culture Task Force’s support for an IRC. “It appears the charge to the redistricting task force, however, was to begin with the premise that the city council would still draw the redistricting lines,”

Sanders said. “To say the least, that’s not how I envisioned it.

Costa defended the city’s current roadmap for drafting 10 city council districts.

The city’s approach “is the approach that Fort Worth and most cities across the country have always used to redraw district boundaries,” he said. “Proponents of this approach often say that it promotes accountability and democracy because citizens elect their councilmembers to make these kinds of decisions and can hold their elected officials accountable for making such decisions responsibly.”

POWER OF BELONGING Even in the middle of social isolation, Rabbi Brian Zimmerman found a way to create Belonging – bonding people together as part of a larger spiritual family – a key component of longevity for people who live in Blue Zones communities. Now in his fifth year as senior faith leader at Reform Beth-El Congregation, Rabbi Zimmerman was dealing with the standard concerns about an aging building and an increasingly mobile flock when COVID-19 shuttered in-person worship. “The decision to close was not as challenging for us as for other faiths. Gathering in a worship space becomes secondary to keeping people healthy.” But how to retain community in a time when the community has to be apart? Through videotaped and streamed services and gatherings on Zoom, Beth-El has managed to create virtual community. “Those who want to see people can log on for the candle and wine blessings with friends,” he said. “Those who want the ritual of the service can still see the synagogue and the Torah.”

Some congregants wouldn’t or couldn’t leave their homes. For them, the celebration of hearing the Shofar (ram’s horn) came to them thanks to a few talented Temple members willing to travel with their shofars. Others needed to see their friends, so there was a parking lot service where people could stay in their cars and tune into the service, like a drive-in movie.

Upon reflection, Rabbi Zimmerman says Judaism offers believers “a playbook on most of the Power 9” principles –– including eating with a Plant Slant (heavier consumption of fruits and veggies), Right Tribe (encouraging a close-knit community), and definitely Wine @ Five and Down Shifting on Friday nights.

The blessings over a cup of wine and bread offer a moment for Jews to naturally pause and reframe their thoughts.

Growing up, Rabbi Zimmerman didn’t think being a rabbi was for him. “You have this kind of image of rabbis, even when it’s your dad,” he said. So he went to film school. “Even when I was bouncing around Los Angeles, there were times I stopped what I was doing” to observe Shabbat. One thing is certain – the challenge of rethinking how to gather a faith community during a global pandemic has required the ingenuity of a set designer, the vision of a director, and faith that the spirit of the Jewish community dwells in many places.

fact that it came directly from a state senator), DeOtte said the delay was an example of an inefficient bureaucratic process at TAD. He shared a couple of other examples. One concerned an RFQ or Request for Quote, which is the first step in receiving bids for projects. In November, two RFQs from TAD were closed, with only one business replying. DeOtte thought this was odd because he said he was told the RFQs were initially sent to 30 entities.

One of the RFQs, he said, was 33 pages long, and DeOtte believes the size of the packet may have dissuaded some entities from completing the initial application process.

TAD board member Gary Losada said an audit or some similar process to find out why protests have skyrocketed is “absolutely necessary.” He said the frustrations voiced at TAD offices could be due to general home appreciations, software problems, or a “culture at TAD that is trying to get every penny out of taxpayers they can.”

If the audit goes forward, he added, it will unleash a “domino effect” that will force TAD to address lingering problems, and that would be a good thing.

“It’s not healthy for TAD to have these things swirling above its head,” Losada said. In these situations, it’s best to stop the swirl by “sharing the correct information and data. I’m a little confused as to why there is this resistance” to DeOtte’s ideas, he said, referring to the failed RFQ process, delayed acknowledgment of Nelson’s letter, and a general sense that the topic isn’t a priority of TAD staffers.

With little tangible progress to show, DeOtte is raising awareness of alternative options. Hiring a third-party contractor would be the fastest way to start the audit, but he understands that TAD board members may be reluctant to pay for that undertaking. Another option would be to hand the problem over to a volunteer citizen’s committee.

“We have people who are qualified in doing this kind of work,” he said. “I know people who have volunteered to help with this if we need it. If we are going to have to chase this around for three years, let’s give a committee access to information and let them come back with what they find.

Some of these people are retired, and this is [the type of work] they did during their previous careers.”

Protests waste taxpayers’ time and money, DeOtte said. “There are a lot of issues [that need to be addressed] at TAD. This is the one I am focused on because I feel it affects every taxpayer in Tarrant County. Until we all get a good answer for the spike in protests, I’m not going to stop pushing.” l

member Rich DeOtte. Whereas TAD fielded around 70,000 protests in 2013, 153,871 property owners made a formal complaint to one of TAD’s offices in 2019. TAD oversees about 760,000 commercial and residential accounts in Tarrant County.

Between 2015 and 2019, the number of formal protests in Tarrant County rose by 170%, according to TAD data. In early 2020 and soon after beginning his first term on the board, DeOtte contacted the four largest counties outside of Tarrant and found that their protest rates increased at comparatively far lower rates: Dallas (49.7%), Bexar (27%), Travis (36%), and Harris (11%).

In June, TAD’s five board members voted to explore the possibility of undertaking an audit to find the cause of the increased protests. DeOtte, who raised the motion at the June board meeting, believes that the rising number of homeowner complaints may be due, in part, to internal errors in TAD’s accounting and home valuations.

“I do believe some of the increased protests are due to increased taxes,” he said, “but there is an awareness out there that there is something unfair in the system.”

If the TAD board moves forward with the audit, it would be the second substantial examination of irregularities within TAD in five years. In 2016, the results of an audit of software problems led thenTarrant County Tax Assessor-Collector Ron Wright to call the findings “explosive.” Two years of software errors leading up to the audit had caused a surge of taxpayer refunds in 2016.

Without an outside investigation into the recent spike in protests, DeOtte can only speculate on some of the causes of resident frustration with their TAD bills, but the Aumentum software that caused the 2014-2016 problems may be playing some role in the ongoing spike in public complaints, DeOtte said.

On Aug. 30, State Sen. Jane Nelson, whose District 12 includes much of Tarrant County, encouraged the TAD board to solve the very problem that DeOtte has worked to address over the past year.

“As I understand it, the number of protests in Tarrant County far exceed the increases in other major metropolitan counties,” the state senator’s letter reads.

“On behalf of the constituents I represent in Tarrant County, I would request that the board of directors investigate the reason for such a large increase — and to look into whether software used by the district is playing a role.”

The letter was shared with TAD’s board members six weeks after it initially arrived to a TAD representative. Given the importance of the subject matter (and the

(And embarrassed, he was.) As I’ve said before, I’m not throwing away my years of love for and friendship with some people in my life over a single politician. I don’t want

“Listen to Joe Biden,” I hissed at my 9-year-old, who was grunting at me. “I said listen to Joe Biden!”

In the other room, our 46th president was calling for unity in his first address to the nation. Yes, Joe! I remember thinking.

Bring some mother-effing unity to this mother-effing house! Though I think he was talking about the liberals and conservatives in the country, his speech could have applied to the Marianis of Fort Worth, three people — me, my wife D., and our third grader A. — dissolving into yet another Mariani Blowout ®. More grunting, a lot of yell-whispering, and finally tears of sorrow soundtracked my “helping” our littlest family member redo a few math questions he had screwed up.

You would have thought his teacher had asked him to saw off his right hand with a plastic butterknife. *grunt* My wife had removed herself early on, wisely. D. has zero patience, and like me, she had been waiting four years for this day. She was not going to let our son ruin it for her. I have half an ounce of patience, so I tagged in right before Uncle Joe uttered, “… distinguished guests and my fellow Americans … .” I guess when the choice came down to family or history, I chose family. I always do, and it’s not always easy, especially when some of them are becoming more radicalized politically than ever. I don’t mean our son. As, um, challenging as he can be, he’s a good little dude, sweet and kind, and, as far as I know, he has not gone MAGA (yet). I mean my

He won’t read this. My wonderful older brother L. won’t read or listen to anything that’s not coming from Newsmax. As much as I know he loves me, and he does, I know that his opinion is shared by the majority of readers who comment on

our political stories. The ones who aren’t canceling us for not being woke enough, and there’s a shit-ton of them, are calling the Weekly “liberal trash” or a “liberal rag.” The notion brings me back to a tweet I read a few months ago from some highpowered progressive, that the time for “both-sidesism” in journalism, and in life, is over. And I honestly couldn’t agree more.

I write what I write, and what I have been writing since 2016, not to promote policy from either the left or right. It’s to espouse truth, justice, and equality, and when you squarely consider these concepts, the very foundation of our society, there’s really only one side fighting for them, and it’s not the Republicans. What Republican lawmakers represent is a mix of fear and hate: fear and hatred of the Other, of the unknown, of the future. I’d bet that most of the people who pull that red lever at the polls share the same depressing worldview as John Cornyn and Ted Cruz and John Hawley or “Josh” Hawley or “Jordon,” whatever, something white, and all of the other far-right nutjobs. Some conservative “readers” — I use that term loosely because most of them read only the headlines and subheads instead of the full stories — believe we cancel them because they don’t believe what we believe, which is not true.

We cancel them because they believe in conspiracies, sexism, and racism. Stop promoting that shit, and we’ll stop writing about how shitty you and your political party are. Pretty simple.

The Republican party was never as offensive and wrongheaded as it has been the past four years. Along with the swamp

was that he would in some way diminish it.

Or light it on fire. I respect BLM enough not to sully the movement’s mojo. They’re going to need all the good vibing they can muster to beat back the propaganda being fed to my brother and probably every other conservative by the rightwing media machine. Newsmax shows a couple of dark-skinned looters or graffiti artists during a justice march, and every viewer assumes the same is going on in every other American city. The truth is that the Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project found that 93% of BLM marches this summer were nonviolent.

But conservatives don’t want to hear that. They will refuse to budge from the lie that BLM is violent because it goes against their hatred of the Other, and all the while, they will turn away from the real damage being done to our republic by the Oath Keepers, the Proud Boys, the Aryan Brotherhood, and all of the other domestic terrorists among us, including the ones who stormed the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6.

Calling them “very fine people” or telling them to “stand back and stand by” was the exact opposite of what needed to happen over the past few months. But here we are.

A couple of weeks ago, I tried to gauge his interest in one of our traditionally serious but kind political conversations via text. Our beloved Pittsburgh Steelers were getting their asses kicked, and we were both really pissed off. Supremely pissed. Funny how being shut off from the rest of humanity brings out the inner tribesman in us all. Knowing that Twitter had just given DJT the boot for spreading lies and fomenting an insurrection, I texted L. a link to a tweet about the lack

things in Congress and throughout D.C., Donald J. Trump did a lot of damage to our nation and did a lot of damage to me personally, which is the most important.

Of all the dumb, evil, dumb/evil things he did — fiddling while we all died of COVID, separating children from their parents, withdrawing from the Paris Climate Agreement, attacking Obamacare, using the highest office in the land to line his pockets to the tune of $900,000 — I think he’ll be remembered most for saying out loud all of the nonsense white Americans have been thinking for decades, legitimizing the cruel words and emboldening their speakers. My beautiful son is Black, and I hate the thought that people who do not like his smart, silly, kind self simply because of the color of his skin can now parade around their racism without fear of retribution or comeuppance. For DJT, and many other conservatives, including my family and friends, disavowing white supremacy isn’t enough. Because of the dirty association, they must do more. The way they can do that is by supporting Black Lives Matter and other causes that seek justice and equality for minorities. The only thing that stopped me from sending L. a BLM T-shirt for Christmas — as a light joke beneath the ominous shadow of truth —

of guts behind a Steelers punt after they had just clawed back to within 13 points of the lead and had all of the momentum on their side and an entire quarter left. L. wrote back, “I deactivated Twitter so no longer on platform.”

My rage — his cold, suggestive, haughty reply, the impending loss, the fact that democracy in America almost died, the freaking punt! — overcame me.

“So why’d you leave Twitter?” I texted back. “Dear Leader got banned for spreading lies and inciting a limp-dicked coup???”

I was ready for another one of our spirited flame wars.

“Sorry, Anth,” L. replied a beat later.

“Don’t want to go to politics.”

His response was expected but still no less deflating. Here I had been waiting for weeks, privately, to gloat. Now my power had been removed. I apologized, told him I loved him, and moved on. #bebest As you can imagine, I’m still thinking about it. I’m also still enraged. I’m not sure I want to be united as much as I want the traitors to be held accountable. Do you want to be united with someone who thinks a fair and free presidential election was rigged? Or who thinks COVID is a joke? Or who thinks ethnic minorities are all criminals? Or who thinks immigrant

parents and their children should be separated for trying to come to America to escape their war-torn countries? Or who thinks we should erect a gas-drilling rig wherever there’s a patch of wild grass?

There’s no telling what goes through the mind of someone who takes as gospel every single thing tweeted by some known, provable conman who bankrupt a casino but believes nothing that is written or broadcast by head-of-their-classes professionals who expose themselves to libel suits (some in the multimilliondollar range) every day. It’s baffling, and they’re no one I want to be “united” with.

Go start your own country. It will be in the cornfields and the swamps, and it will last about five days, because blue areas fuel two-thirds of our economy and keep many red states afloat. If I love or like you, we can always still text. Depends on your cell reception in Trumplandia. Can you hear me now?

Along with pretty much every other conservative on the planet, my dear older brother had picked up his social-media ball and taken it elsewhere. Maybe to Parler. Maybe MeWe. We’ll never know.

And I’ll never care enough to find out. All that’s a fact is that wherever he took his ball in a huff, it’s unregulated, meaning users can just spew nonsense and lie with

impunity. And continue warping minds, like my Harvard-educated older brother’s.

And the division between left and right will grow even larger.

I grew up idolizing my two older brothers.

I answered the call one painful hour later when a detective informed me that my sweet, kind brother Adam had killed himself. That night, I cried by myself out in L.’s sprawling backyard facing the Long Island Sound, nursing a craft beer that had been sitting in L.’s fridge for, he says, weeks. (L. is an oenophile.) With my wife D. and son A. back in Texas, I spent the remaining nighttime hours of that

horrible day alone except for Hector. L.’s big ol’ rescue dog lay by my side in bed as I cried. Now with the Steelers out of the playoffs and the Penguins just starting up, the most I’ve talked to L. has been about Hector. The lovable lug died of cancer last week. I am at one with their pain, all of them. I know we all have hearts. That’s the kind of unity I can believe in.

My economics teacher referred to the Reagan administration as “the evil empire” —

“Fastest white boy.” I recall the subtle pride with which L. relayed his nickname to us and anyone else who would listen.

I don’t know if he would embrace it now. I even wonder if he would say it’s discriminatory. You hear that a lot in my line of work, that something I wrote or something I had quoted was “racist.”

Not toward minorities. No. Racist toward white people. It’s as ridiculous as you can imagine.

My most recent experience with this phenomenon was related to a story I wrote about the Fort Worth Police Officers’ Association (FWPOA). Mere days after dozens of “patriots” steamrolled the feckless Capitol Police and stormed the Capitol in D.C., the FWPOA joined Parler, a haven for racists and conspiracy theorists.

On our Facebook page, the comments were wheels off. I mean, it’s nearly impossible to tell who supports what. All I know is that I was accused of being racist. Toward white people. Note: Racism works only from top to bottom. As it’s been proven in court a million times, “reverse discrimination” is a myth. White people in America saying they’ve been discriminated against is white privilege in action. Until white people are enslaved by people with non-white skin for 401 years, white people cannot claim they’ve been discriminated against. Just stop. Your white sheets are showing.

I think it’s truthful to say that all racists are Trumpers while not all Trumpers are racists. “The fastest white boy” is no racist. A Trumper all the way? He’s that times 10. A racist, he is not. As mixed up as it all is, I can’t help but feel bad for him and for all the other Trumpers I know and love. I’ve been wanting to ask him, and them, are you determined, disillusioned, or despondent? Or maybe all of the above depending on the day and the “news” coming from the wacko right-wing media?

L. is a single-issue voter, and that single issue is abortion. As I always say, L. would vote for the second coming of Adolf Hitler if he were the only “pro-life” candidate on the ballot. And it’s true. I’ve asked L., and he believes abortion is the greatest genocide the earth has ever seen.

There’s no going back for him.

The other day, my wife asked me when I became pro-choice, which was like asking me when I became a fan of oxygen. I could not recall a specific time or moment. All that came back to me were discussions with L. and his wife about how, yeah, while I’m not crazy about abortion, I’m smart enough to know that it’s none of my business and that by banning the procedure, all we would be doing is attacking women, which I do not stand for.

The conversation I’ve been having in my head since then is about vasectomies. Why don’t we give vasectomies to all teenage boys, and if they stay out of jail and land a stable job after graduation, then they can have their vasectomies reversed? Stay out of my pants, I’ll stay out of yours, right?

It also means that you have to follow a rigidly marked path through the show, possibly having to wait while the people in front of you are done looking at whatever item of interest they’re viewing before you can move on. I miss the freedom of movement that I enjoyed at museum shows in the time before. Despite all of that, the Kimbell’s latest blockbuster still has plenty to enthrall Egyptologists and the like.

It is both grimly appropriate and perversely funny that when you first enter the exhibit, you are flanked by statues of Sekhmet, the goddess of the plague.

(She was also a healing goddess as well as a protector of soldiers. While ancient Egyptians prayed for her protection, they also believed that she caused plagues whenever they angered her.) The stone figures have the bodies of people and the heads of lionesses wearing cobra-shaped headdresses. It’s striking how daintily the features of the lioness faces are rendered in these imposing sculptures. A similar delicacy prevails in the statuette of the goddess Bastet, a finely chiseled bronze figure of a cat with a disturbingly modern stylization to it.

A section of the show is given over to ordinary items gathered from Deir elMedina, the village that housed the royal family’s support staff, ranging from learned scribes to the guys who started digging the Pharaoh’s tomb as soon as he was crowned.

From the outside, WingBucket looks like a fast-food outlet, a small drive-up off Cooper Street with its name written large in a jolly sans-serif font. The chain that started on the far side of Dallas moved into an outpost by UTA this past summer, and were it not for the current pandemic, it would be a great place to stop in, grab some bites, and watch the big game on TV. As it is, WingBucket has plentiful outdoor seating until such time that enough of us are vaccinated to safely gather inside.

One important thing to know before you get there: When WingBucket sells you a chicken wing, they mean the whole wing section: drumette, flat, and tip. This is great news if you’re like me and you like to eat the tip. In any case, you’ll need to adjust your wing order accordingly. The place also does chicken tenders and pork ribs, but I found the tenders undistinguished when two of them came to me between two slices of bread as part of the kitchen’s chicken sandwich. The salad entrees and the chicken and waffles came and went similarly without making much impression on me. In addition to wings,

The flavors are, for the most part, pretty familiar: lemon pepper, garlic Parmesan, mango habanero, and multiple types of barbecue and buffalo sauces. I had my drumsticks with the orange and ginger sauce that mimics the taste of orange chicken. It was too sweet, but then[,] you could say the same for 99% of the orange chicken served in Chinese restaurants. I can say that applying this flavor to whole chicken pieces is something that works.

Enough of that, though: I have to talk about the peanut butter and jelly wings. When I ordered them, I imagined something unappetizing like a chicken wing coated in sticky peanut butter. Instead, the PB&Js were cooked down into a golden, translucent glaze that set off the meat perfectly. Why was I surprised that it worked so well?

After all, many African and Asian food cultures like the earthy taste of peanuts with chicken. (Kung pao, anyone?) The difference is that those cuisines pair the peanuts with spicy ingredients, whereas the pop of sweetness from the red pepper jam marked this out as an American

creation. The kitchen’s one big burst of creativity translated to the best entree on the menu.

The sides that I tried were consistently good, with the French fries crispy to my liking and the barbecue baked beans livened by bits of diced red bell pepper. I don’t usually go in for fried green beans, but I chose them to go with my combo platter and found them addictive.

The price point for the entrees is generally competitive with the likes of KFC and Church’s, but with the sides and drinks, I found my bill going higher than the fast-food places. Then again, WingBucket does give you a chicken experience that’s more upmarket than those chains, and I’ll gladly pay the upcharge to have those PB&J wings again. l

As one of the more gifted guitarists around town, John Stevens has been lending his talents to numerous local artists for more than two decades. His resume features the likes of Carey Wolff, Sally Majestic, and Confusatron to name just three. Most recently, in perhaps his most notable gig, he’d been the touring guitarist backing Lannie Flowers, former frontman for ’80s power pop icons The Pengwins, through his resurgence in recent years.

From blues to jazz and from indie to country to jam bands, Stevens has played it all. Yet after spending the bulk of the current millennium playing and recording music for others, he’d never really applied his skills to recording his own music. That

On Friday, Neal Elliott McAlister will release his debut single, “Double Clown,” with an accompanying video on all streaming platforms. The singersongwriter, multi-instrumentalist, poet, and artist wrote the song in 2018 and recorded “most of it,” he said, in March.

He produced the video in November.

“It doesn’t necessarily take that long for a single to get out, but this particular single has kind of been a journey for sure.”

McAlister said the road to the debut release has been a long one but rewarding.

“I’ve played music for most of my life and am extremely excited for this release and my upcoming releases. The long

production time for this particular release is due to oiling the cogs while the machine is on, and, in honor of that, ‘Double Clown’ shows a side of the process that might not usually make it out to the general public.”

McAlister recorded the tracks at home on less-than-preferable equipment. “I shot the video using my phone’s camera.

The single is very much a love letter to DIY and lo-fi. In the coming months, listeners can expect some surprises, as I have continued to refine my process and look forward to sharing how a little elbow butter can go a long way.”

The song, while only a minute long, is packed with juicy goodness. As if funneling folk through a lo-fi lens, “Double Clown” pivots on McAlister’s vocals, steeped in modulation effects to effectively surround the listener. With the song (mastered by Yokyo’s Sam Culp), the

closed as well. He suddenly found himself stuck at home with nothing but time. As he sat killing the hours playing guitar, his thoughts turned to documenting some of the songs he’d been working on.

Some, like “Oliver’s Lullaby,” he’d been toying with for years. He said he hopes it faithfully describes how he sees himself as a musician.

Perhaps one surprising element of the album is in just how confident a singer Stevens is. Far from any hint of the tentative reservation that might be reasonably expected of a career instrumentalist, Stevens offers the full-voiced aplomb of a veteran singer comfortable with his voice.

“I started as a singer,” he said. “I fronted bands through high school, so it wasn’t really different for me to sing.

Up until about 2002, when I got into Confusatron … I started to take more of a 32-year-old reveals a side of himself that not many others have seen. As the guitarist for the widely acclaimed Chillamundo and frontman of his country-rocking outfit Goodness Gracias, he’s known for rowdy noise more than melody and restraint. It’s a good side.

“I wanted to set a tone,” he said. “The song is kind of a morphosis, but if you’re tuned into the notion that the clown costume represents what the body puts on after going back into the world and reassuming a common identity, it pushes the meaning a bit differently. I like also the multiple and manifold meanings you can draw out of the song, as a piece of art fully into itself without any of the added content.”

Over a fuzzed-out needle to record and acoustic guitar recording, McAlister sings, “No one would buy his clown costume as

backseat, focusing instead on learning my instrument and learning different styles of music. I guess when I felt that I finally had a little more to say, it just came naturally.”

Though he admits he’s still a bit inexperienced with formal songwriting, Stevens said he hopes this album is the beginning of a new direction, one he intends to keep developing and taking further.

“It remains a little bit foreign to me,” he said about writing lyrics, “certainly more than I wish that it was. I don’t keep a journal or anything like I probably should. It’s definitely not a skill as fluent to me as playing guitar, which I’ve been doing literally since I was 5 years old. It is the hardest thing for me to do, but I’m learning that really the hardest thing is just to be honest, and then everything else falls into place.” l it started to drizzle outside / No one could remember whether weather was nice, when they went to the circus or the rodeo.”

The song, McAlister said, “deftly illustrates the power of brevity in music.

The minute-long track begs more questions than it answers and is ripe for interpretation.”

The video is mostly black and white and features a bun-buttering machine along with road warning signs.

McAlister is currently in the studio working on more singles for later this year. He also mentioned that fans ought to expect to hear releases of live field recordings in the coming months.

changed just last week with the release of Living Room, his very first solo album.

“This is it, my solo debut,” Stevens said. “It occurred to me that in all the years and years of playing and being in different bands — jazz, funk, reggae-rock, a pretty wide gamut of genres — what I’ve actually played most is at home alone with an acoustic guitar. Sometime over the summer I thought, ‘Man, it’d be cool to put out an album.’ ” Originally envisioned as an acoustic instrumental EP, due to some coaxing from producer Taylor Tatsch (Maren Morris, Shadows of Jets, Cutthroat Finches), and some growing confidence as a songwriter, Stevens fleshed out some of the material to include other instrumentation as well as adding his voice. The result is a ninesong collection of tracks that marry two distinct, yet curiously complementary, sounds. The album alternates playfully between a well-hewn, soulful Americana with lush, full-band backing and beautiful, baroque instrumental acoustic interludes.

Impassioned blues/country rock tracks like “The Devil’s Gone and Let Me Down” and “If I Sing” sit alongside dreamy, intricate, Tommy Emmanuel-esque fingerstyle ballads like “Duncan” and “Oliver’s Lullaby,” and both inexplicably seem to belong right where they are.

“The genesis and the concept of [the album] was to let people know what I sound like when I’m not in a power-pop outfit or playing a specific genre,” he said. “When I take my guitar off the wall and sit down on my couch, this is what comes out.”

Living Room’s origin, unfortunately, has become an all-too-familiar one for many releases this past year. It’s another example of an artist turning a terrible situation into a period of creativity.

COVID-19 forced the cancellation of Flowers’ planned tour to support his 2019 album Home, and the newly reopened Moon Bar, where Stevens supplemented his income by managing and tending bar,
